ℹ️ This corpus has no verse-level morphological tagging. Lemmas come mainly from word-level tagging of other books in the same language (not from this verse), falling back to dictionary form-matching for the rest. Rare homographs can still be misread; verify against the original and a specialist lexicon where precision matters.
ℹ️ The Chinese and English alongside are this site's own translation, made directly from the original text on this page (not the CUV or the WEB, which follow the Masoretic Text and a different textual tradition).

36:1
And it came to pass in the fourteenth year of Hezekiah's reign that Sennacherim king of the Assyrians came up against the fortified cities of Judea and took them.
And the king of the Assyrians sent Rapsakes from Lachis to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great force; and he stood at the aqueduct of the upper pool, on the road of the fuller's field.
And there went out to him Eliakim the son of Chelkias the steward, and Somnas the scribe, and Ioach the son of Asaph the recorder.
And Rapsakes said to them, "Say to Hezekiah: Thus says the great king, the king of the Assyrians: In what are you trusting?"
Is a battle line formed by counsel or by words of the lips? And now, in whom do you trust, that you disobey me?
Behold, you are trusting in this crushed reed staff, in Egypt; whoever leans upon it, it will go into his hand. Such is Pharao king of Egypt, and all who trust in him.
But if you say, "We trust in the Lord our God" —
Now then, join with my lord the king of the Assyrians, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able to set riders upon them.
And how can you turn back the face of a single governor? Those who trust in the Egyptians for horse and rider are but servants.
And now, was it without the Lord that we came up against this land to make war on it?
And Eliakim and Somnas and Ioach said to him, "Speak to your servants in Syrian, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Judean. And why do you speak in the ears of the men who are on the wall?"
And Rapsakes said to them, "Has my lord sent me to speak these words to your lord or to you? Was it not to the men sitting on the wall, that they may eat dung and drink urine together with you?"
And Rapsakes stood and cried with a loud voice in Judean and said, "Hear the words of the great king, the king of the Assyrians!"
Thus says the king: "Do not let Hezekiah deceive you with words that will not be able to deliver you."
And do not let Hezekiah say to you that "God will deliver you, and this city shall not be given into the hand of the king of the Assyrians."
Do not listen to Hezekiah. Thus says the king of the Assyrians: "If you wish to be blessed, come out to me, and each of you shall eat of his own vine and his fig trees, and you shall drink the water of your own cistern,
until I come and take you to a land like your own land, a land of grain and wine and bread and vineyards."
Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, saying, "Your God will deliver you." Have the gods of the nations each delivered his own country out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians?
Where is the god of Haimath and Arphath? And where is the god of the city of Seppharim? Were they able to deliver Samaria out of my hand?
Which of all the gods of these nations has delivered his land out of my hand, that the God of Jerusalem should deliver out of my hand?
And they kept silent, and no one answered him a word, because the king had commanded that no one should answer.
And Eliakim the son of Chelkias the steward, and Somnas the scribe of the army, and Ioach the son of Asaph the recorder came in to Hezekiah with their tunics torn, and reported to him the words of Rapsakes.
