Genesis 26

And there was a famine in the land, apart from the former famine which occurred in Abraham's time. And Isaac went to Abimelech king of the Phylistiim, to Gerara.

And the Lord appeared to him and said, "Do not go down to Egypt, but settle in the land of which I tell you.

And sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you; for to you and to your seed I will give all this land, and I will establish my oath which I swore to Abraham your father.

And I will multiply your seed like the stars of heaven, and I will give to your seed all this land; and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,

because Abraham your father obeyed my voice and kept my injunctions and my commandments and my statutes and my ordinances."

And Isaac settled in Gerara.

And the men of the place asked about Rebekah his wife, and he said, "She is my sister," for he was afraid to say, "She is my wife," lest the men of the place kill him because of Rebekah, for she was beautiful in appearance.

And he was there a long time. And Abimelech the king of the Geraraites, peering through the window, saw Isaac playing with Rebekah his wife.

And Abimelech called Isaac and said to him, "So she really is your wife! Why then did you say, 'She is my sister'?" And Isaac said to him, "Because I said, lest I die because of her."

And Abimelech said to him, "What is this you have done to us? Someone of my race nearly slept with your wife, and you have brought upon us ignorance."

And Abimelech commanded all his people, saying, "Everyone who touches this man or his wife shall be liable to death."

And Isaac sowed in that land, and in that year he found barley a hundredfold; and the Lord blessed him.

And the man was raised up, and going forward he became greater, until he became exceedingly great.

And he came to have livestock of sheep and livestock of cattle and many tilled lands; and the Phylistiim envied him.

And all the wells which his father's servants had dug in his father's time, the Phylistiim stopped up and filled them with earth.

And Abimelech said to Isaac, "Go away from us, for you have become far mightier than we."

And Isaac departed from there and encamped in the valley of the Geraraites, and settled there.

And Isaac again dug the wells of water which the servants of Abraham his father had dug, and which the Phylistiim had stopped up after Abraham his father died; and he gave them names according to the names which Abraham his father had given them.

And Isaac's servants dug in the valley of the Geraraites and found there a well of living water.

And the shepherds of the Geraraites quarrelled with Isaac's shepherds, claiming the water was theirs; and he called the name of the well "Injustice," for they had wronged him.

And Isaac moved on from there and dug another well; and they went to law about that one too. And he named its name "Enmity."

And he moved on from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel about it. And he named its name "Spaciousness," saying, "Because now the Lord has made room for us and has increased us upon the earth."

And he went up from there to the Well of the Oath.

And the Lord appeared to him in that night and said, "I am the God of Abraham your father. Do not be afraid, for I am with you, and I have blessed you and will multiply your seed for the sake of Abraham your father."

And he built an altar there and called on the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there; and Isaac's servants dug a well there.

And Abimelech went to him from Gerara, with Ochozath his groomsman and Phikol the commander-in-chief of his army.

And Isaac said to them, "Why have you come to me? For you hated me and sent me away from you."

And they said, "We have plainly seen that the Lord was with you, and we said: Let there be a sworn compact between us and between you, and let us make a covenant with you,

that you do no harm with us, just as we did not abhor you, and in the way we treated you well and sent you off in peace. And now you are blessed by the Lord."

And he made them a feast, and they ate and drank.

And rising early in the morning they swore each man to his neighbour; and Isaac sent them off, and they departed from him in safety.

And it happened on that day that Isaac's servants came and reported to him about the well they had dug, and they said, "We have not found water."

And he called it "Oath." Therefore the name of the city is Well of Oath until this present day.

And Esau was forty years old, and he took as wife Judith the daughter of Beer the Chettite, and Basemmath the daughter of Ailon the Heuite.

And they were a source of strife to Isaac and to Rebekah.
