But when you go out to war against your enemies and see horse and rider and a people more numerous than you, you shall not be afraid of them, for the Lord your God is with you, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.
and shall say to them: Hear, O Israel, you are drawing near today to war against your enemies; do not let your heart faint, do not fear nor be shattered nor turn aside from before them;
And the officers shall speak to the people, saying: Who is the man who has built a new house and has not dedicated it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war and another man dedicate it.
And who is the man who has planted a vineyard and has not rejoiced from it? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war and another man rejoice from it.
And who is the man who has betrothed a woman and has not taken her? Let him go and return to his house, lest he die in the war and another man take her.
And the officers shall speak further to the people and shall say: Who is the man who is afraid and faint in heart? Let him go and return to his house, so that he may not make the heart of his brother fainthearted like his own.
Only the women and the household and all the livestock and all that is in the city and all the goods you shall plunder for yourself, and you shall eat all the plunder of your enemies which the Lord your God gives you.
But behold, from the cities of these nations which the Lord your God gives you to inherit their land, you shall not leave alive any of them that breathes.
but you shall utterly devote them to destruction, the Chettite and the Amorite and the Canaanite and the Pherezite and the Heuite and the Iebusite and the Gergesite, just as the Lord your God commanded you;
But when you besiege a city for many days, to make war against it so as to capture it, you shall not destroy its trees by putting an axe to them; rather you shall eat from it, but you shall not cut it down. Is the tree in the field a man, that it should enter before you into the siegeworks?
But a tree which you know is not one whose fruit is eaten, this you shall destroy and cut down, and you shall build a siege-work against the city which makes war against you, until it is delivered up.
