ℹ️ This corpus has no verse-level morphological tagging. Lemmas come mainly from word-level tagging of other books in the same language (not from this verse), falling back to dictionary form-matching for the rest. Rare homographs can still be misread; verify against the original and a specialist lexicon where precision matters.

And the saying, "Behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb and shall bear a son," was foretold concerning this One. For if this One, of whom Isaiah spoke, was not going to be born of a virgin, concerning whom the Holy Spirit cried out, "Behold, the Lord Himself shall give us a sign: behold, the virgin shall conceive in her womb and shall bear a son"—if this One too was going to be born from intercourse like all other firstborn, why did God say He would do a sign which is not common to all firstborn?
But what was truly going to be a sign, and trustworthy to the race of men—that is, that through a virgin womb the firstborn of all creatures, having been made flesh, should truly become a child—God, anticipating this through the prophetic Spirit, foretold it in one way and another, as I have related to you, so that when it came to pass it might be known to have come about by the power and will of the Maker of all things; just as Eve came to be from one rib of Adam, and just as all other living things were begotten in the beginning by the word of God.
But you, even in these matters, dare to falsify the interpretations which your elders gave when they were with Ptolemy, who was king of the Egyptians, saying that the Scripture does not read as those men interpreted it, but rather: "Behold," it says, "the young woman shall conceive in her womb"—as though great things were being signified if a woman were going to give birth from intercourse, which all young women do, except the barren, whom too, if He wills, God is able to make bear children.
For the mother of Samuel, who did not bear, gave birth by the will of God; and the wife of the holy patriarch Abraham; and Elizabeth, who bore John the Baptist; and certain others likewise. So you ought not to suppose it impossible that God can do all that He wills. And especially, since it had been prophesied as about to happen, do not dare to falsify or misinterpret the prophecies, since you will only wrong yourselves, but you will do no harm to God.
