And David comes to Nomba, to Abimelech the priest; and Abimelech was astonished at meeting him, and said to him, Why are you alone, and no one with you?
And David said to the priest, The king has commanded me a matter today and said to me, Let no one know the matter about which I am sending you and about which I have commanded you. And I have given solemn charge to my lads at the place called God's faithfulness, Phellani Alemoni.
And the priest answered David and said, There are no common loaves under my hand, but only holy loaves. If the lads have been kept from a woman, then they shall eat.
And David answered the priest and said to him, But we have kept from a woman yesterday and the third day; when I went out on the journey, all the lads had become purified, and this journey is common, yet it shall be sanctified today because of my vessels.
And Abimelech the priest gave him the bread of the presentation, for there was no bread there but only the bread of the presence, which had been removed from before the Lord, so that hot bread might be set out on the day when he took them.
And there was there one of the lads of Saul on that day, detained neessaran before the Lord; and his name was Doek the Syrian, tending the mules of Saul.
And David said to Abimelech, See if there is here under your hand a spear or a sword, for I have not taken my sword and my weapons in my hand, because the king's matter was in haste.
And the priest said, Behold, the sword of Goliath the Philistine, whom you struck in the valley of Ela, and it is wrapped in a garment. If you will take this for yourself, take it, for there is no other here except this. And David said, Behold, there is none like it; give it to me.
And the servants of Anchous said to him, Is not this David the king of the land? Did not the dancing women lead off for him, saying, Saul struck down in his thousands, and David in his ten thousands?
And he changed his countenance before him and pretended in that day, and drummed upon the doors of the city, and was carried along in his hands, and fell upon the doors of the gate, and his saliva ran down upon his beard.
