And it came to pass about a month later that Naas the Ammanite came up and encamps against Iabis Galaad. And all the men of Iabis said to Naas the Ammanite, Make a covenant with us, and we will serve you.
And Naas the Ammanite said to them, On this condition I will make a covenant with you: that I gouge out every right eye of yours, and I will lay a reproach upon Israel.
And the men of Iabis say to him, Allow us seven days, and we will send messengers into all the territory of Israel; and if there is no one who saves us, we will come out to you.
And behold, Saul was coming after the morning out of the field; and Saul said, Why is it that the people weep? And they recount to him the words of the sons of Iabis.
And he took two oxen and cut them in pieces, and sent them into all the territory of Israel by the hand of messengers, saying, Whoever is not going out after Saul and after Samuel, thus shall they do to his oxen. And an ecstasy from the Lord came upon the people of Israel, and they cried out as one man.
And he said to the messengers who had come, Thus shall you say to the men of Iabis: Tomorrow deliverance shall be yours, when the sun has grown hot. And the messengers came into the city and report to the men of Iabis, and they were glad.
And it came to pass after the morrow that Saul set the people in three companies, and they enter into the midst of the camp in the morning watch, and they were striking the sons of Ammon until the day grew hot; and it came about that those left over were scattered, and not two of them were left together.
And all the people went to Galgala, and Samuel there anointed Saul as king before the Lord in Galgala; and he sacrificed there sacrifices and peace offerings before the Lord, and Samuel and all Israel rejoiced exceedingly.
