and swears, 'The Lord lives,' with truth and in judgment and in righteousness, then nations shall bless themselves in her, and in him they shall praise God in Jerusalem.
Be circumcised to your God, and circumcise the hardness of your heart, O men of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem, lest my wrath go forth like fire and burn, and there be none to quench it, because of the wickedness of your practices.
Declare in Judah and let it be heard in Jerusalem; say: Sound the trumpet in the land and cry aloud; say: Gather yourselves together, and let us go into the walled cities.
A lion has come up from his lair; destroying nations he has set out and gone forth from his place, to make the land a desolation; and cities shall be torn down so that none dwell in them.
And it shall be in that day, says the Lord, the heart of the king shall perish and the heart of the rulers; and the priests shall be astonished and the prophets shall marvel.
And I said: O Master, Lord, so then you have utterly deceived this people and Jerusalem, saying, 'Peace shall be to you'; and behold, the sword has touched their very soul.
At that time they shall say to this people and to Jerusalem: A wind of wandering in the wilderness; the way of the daughter of my people, not for cleanness nor for holiness.
Remind the nations: Behold, they have come! Declare in Jerusalem: Bands are coming from a land far off, and they have raised their voice against the cities of Judah.
My belly, my belly! I am in anguish, and the senses of my heart also. My soul is in turmoil, my heart is torn; I will not keep silent, for my soul has heard the sound of a trumpet, the shout of war.
For the leaders of my people did not know me; they are foolish sons and not understanding. They are wise to do evil, but to do good they did not know how.
I saw, and behold, Carmel was a desert, and all the cities were burned with fire before the face of the Lord, and before the face of the anger of his wrath they were destroyed.
For these things let the earth mourn and let the heaven above grow dark; for I have spoken and I will not repent, I have set out and I will not turn back from it.
At the sound of horseman and drawn bow every region withdrew; they went into the caves and hid in the groves and climbed up on the rocks. Every city was abandoned; no man dwells in them.
And you, what will you do? Though you clothe yourself in scarlet and adorn yourself with golden ornament, and though you paint your eyes with antimony, your beautification is in vain. Your lovers have rejected you; they seek your life.
For I heard a voice as of a woman in labour, your groaning as of one bearing her first child. The voice of the daughter of Zion shall grow faint, and she shall let her hands drop: Woe is me! For my soul faints over the slain.
