Do not be hasty with your mouth, and let not your heart hurry to bring forth a word before God; for God is in heaven and you are on the earth. Therefore let your words be few.
5:2
For a dream comes with much distraction, and a fool’s voice with many words.
5:3
When you vow a vow to God, do not delay to pay it, for there is no pleasure in fools; pay whatever you vow.
5:4
It is better that you not vow than that you vow and not pay.
5:5
Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, and do not say before God, “It was done in ignorance,” lest God be angry at your voice and destroy the works of your hands.
5:6
For in a multitude of dreams there are also vanities, and many words; but fear God.
5:7
If you see the oppression of the poor and the seizing of judgment and justice in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for one high official watches over another high one, and there are higher ones over them.
5:8
And the profit of the land is for all; a king is served by the cultivated field.
5:9
He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; and who has loved produce in their abundance? This too is vanity.
5:10
When goods increase, those who eat them increase; and what advantage has the owner of them, except to look with his eyes?
5:11
Sweet is the sleep of a servant, whether he eats little or much; but for the one filled with riches, there is nothing that lets him sleep.
5:12
There is a sickness that I saw under the sun: riches kept by their owner to his own hurt.
5:13
And those riches perish through an evil distraction; and he begets a son, yet there is nothing in his hand.
5:14
As he came forth from his mother’s womb naked, he shall return to go as he came; and he shall take nothing from his toil to carry away in his hand.
5:15
This too is an evil sickness: just as he came, so also he shall go; and what profit has he who toils for the wind?
5:16
Moreover, all his days are in darkness and grief and much vexation and sickness and anger.
5:17
Behold, what I have seen to be good, which is fitting: to eat and to drink and to see good in all one’s toil at which he toils under the sun for the number of the days of his life that God has given him; for that is his portion.
5:18
Moreover, every man to whom God has given riches and possessions, and has empowered him to eat of it and to take his portion and to rejoice in his toil—this is a gift of God.
5:19
For he will not much remember the days of his life, because God keeps him occupied with the gladness of his heart.
