Leander, born of his father Severianus in the province of Carthago of Spain, a monk by profession, and from a monk made bishop of the Church of Hispalis in the province of Baetica: a man of sweet eloquence, of most outstanding talent; in life also and in doctrine so illustrious that even by his faith and diligence the peoples of the Gothic nation were turned back from Arian madness to the Catholic faith. For he, in the wandering of his exile, composed two books against the dogmas of the heretics, most richly furnished with the learning of the holy Scriptures, etc. Besides, he published one little book to his sister Florentina, On the Instruction of Virgins and Contempt of the World, marked beforehand with distinctions of headings.
