2 Kings 4

And a certain woman from among the sons of the prophets cried out to Elisaie, saying: Your servant, my husband, has died, and you know that he was a servant who feared the Lord; and the creditor has come to take my two sons for himself as slaves.

And Elisaie said: What shall I do for you? Tell me what you have in the house. And she said: Your servant has nothing in the house except the oil with which I anoint myself.

And he said to her: Go, ask for yourself vessels from outside, from all your neighbors, empty vessels; do not get too few.

And you shall go in and shut the door behind you and your sons, and you shall pour out into these vessels, and each one that is filled you shall set aside.

And she went from him and did so and shut the door behind her and her sons; they kept bringing the vessels to her, and she kept pouring.

until the vessels were full. And she said to her sons: Bring me yet another vessel. And they said to her: There is not another vessel. And the oil stopped.

And she came and reported to the man of God, and Elisaie said: Go, sell the oil and pay off your interest, and you and your sons shall live on what oil is left.

And a day came when Elisaie passed over to Souman, and a great woman was there, and she urged him to eat bread. And it happened that, from the frequency of his passing through, he would turn aside to eat there.

And the woman said to her husband: Behold now, I know that this man of God who passes by us continually is holy.

Let us make him an upper room, a small place, and let us put there for him a bed and a table and a stool and a lampstand; and it shall be that when he comes in to us, he shall turn aside there.

And a day came when he went in there and turned aside into the upper room and slept there.

And he said to Giezi his servant: Call me this Somanite woman. And he called her, and she stood before him.

And he said to him: Say to her now: Behold, you have gone to all this trouble for us; what must be done for you? Do you have a word to the king or to the commander of the army? And she said: I dwell among my own people.

And he said: What must be done for her? And Giezi his servant said: Indeed, she has no son, and her husband is old.

And he called her, and she stood by the door.

And Elisaie said to her: At this season, when the hour comes round alive, you shall be embracing a son. And she said: No, my lord, do not deceive your servant.

And the woman conceived and bore a son at this season, when the hour came round alive, as Elisaie had said to her.

And the child grew up. And it happened one day that the child went out to his father, to the reapers.

And he said to his father: My head, my head! And he said to the servant: Carry him to his mother.

And he carried him to his mother, and he lay on her knees until midday, and he died.

And she carried him up and laid him on the bed of the man of God and shut the door behind him and went out.

And she called her husband and said: Send me, please, one of the servants and one of the donkeys, and I will run to the man of God and return.

And he said: Why is it that you are going to him today? It is neither new moon nor sabbath. And she said: It is well.

And she saddled the donkey and said to her servant: Drive on and go; do not hold me back from riding unless I tell you.

Come, and you shall go and come to the man of God at Mount Karmelion. And it happened, when Elisaie saw her coming, that he said to Giezi his servant: Behold, there is that Somanite woman.

Now run to meet her and say: Is it well with you? Is it well with your husband? Is it well with the child? And she said: It is well.

And she came to Elisaie at the mountain and took hold of his feet. And Giezi drew near to push her away, but Elisaie said: Let her be, for her soul is in bitter pain within her, and the Lord has hidden it from me and has not told me.

And she said: Did I ask a son from my lord? Did I not say, You shall not mislead me?

And Elisaie said to Giezi: Gird your loins and take my staff in your hand and go. If you meet a man, do not greet him; and if a man greets you, do not answer him. And you shall lay my staff on the face of the child.

And the mother of the child said: As the Lord lives and as your soul lives, I will not leave you. And Elisaie arose and went after her.

And Giezi went on ahead of her and laid the staff on the face of the child, and there was no voice and there was no response. And he turned back to meet him and reported to him, saying: The child has not awakened.

And Elisaie came into the house, and behold, the child was dead, laid on his bed.

And Elisaie went into the house and shut the door behind the two of them and prayed to the Lord.

And he went up and lay upon the child and put his mouth on his mouth and his eyes on his eyes and his hands on his hands, and he bent over him, and the flesh of the child grew warm.

And he turned back and walked in the house this way and that; and he went up and bent himself over the boy as many as seven times, and the boy opened his eyes.

And Elisha called out to Giezi and said, Call this Shunammite woman. And he called her, and she came in to him. And Elisha said, Take up your son.

And the woman came in and fell at his feet and did obeisance to the ground; and she took up her son and went out.

And Elisha returned to Galgala, and the famine was in the land; and the sons of the prophets were sitting before him. And Elisha said to his servant, Set on the great pot and boil a stew for the sons of the prophets.

And one went out into the field to gather arioth, and he found a vine in the field and gathered from it a wild gourd, his garment full; and he threw it into the pot of the stew, for they did not know it.

And he poured it out for the men to eat. And it came about, as they were eating of the stew, that behold, they cried out and said, O man of God, there is death in the pot! And they could not eat.

And he said, Take flour and cast it into the pot. And Elisha said to Giezi the servant, Pour out for the people, and let them eat. And there was no longer any harmful thing there in the pot.

And a man passed through from Baithsarisa and brought to the man of God firstfruits, twenty barley loaves and cakes of figs. And he said, Give to the people, and let them eat.

And his attendant said, What, shall I set this before a hundred men? And he said, Give to the people, and let them eat, for thus says the Lord: They shall eat and shall leave some over.

And they ate and left some over, according to the word of the Lord.
