60:309
the bearer, as he asserted, being in haste; the other lengthy, as though answering more fully and carefully. These the aforesaid tribune thought should be sent to me, that I myself should rather refute them. Both of these I refuted in one book. When this had come into the hands of the same Gaudentius, he wrote back what seemed good to him, to me myself, answering by no reasoning, but rather declaring that he neither answered nor had kept silent. Although this could sufficiently appear to those who read intelligently and compared our words with his own, I nevertheless was unwilling to leave it without a rejoinder, whatever it was. Hence it came about that these two books of ours against him existed. This work begins thus: 'Gaudentius, the Donatist bishop of Tamugadi.' CHAPTER 86.
60:310
AGAINST LYING, ONE BOOK. Then also I wrote a book against lying. The occasion of this work arose thus: because, for tracking down the Priscillianist heretics, who suppose their heresy is to be concealed not only by denying but even by lying, it seemed to certain Catholics that they ought to feign themselves Priscillianists, in order to penetrate their hiding-places. Forbidding this to be done, I composed this book. This book begins thus: 'You have sent me many things to read.' CHAPTER 87. AGAINST TWO LETTERS OF THE PELAGIANS, FOUR BOOKS.
60:311
Secuntur libri quattuor, quos contra duas epistulas Pelagianorum ad episcopum Romanae ecclesiae Bonifatium scripsi, quia, cum in manus eius uenissent, ipse mihi eas miserat inueniens in illis calumniose interpositum nomen meum. Hoc opus sic incipit: Noueram te quidem fama celeberrima praedicante . CAPVT LXXXVIII. CONTR;A IVLIANVM LIBRI SEX.
There follow four books which I wrote against two letters of the Pelagians, to Boniface, bishop of the Roman church; because, when they had come into his hands, he himself had sent them to me, finding in them my name calumniously inserted. This work begins thus: 'I had known you indeed by most celebrated fame proclaiming you.' CHAPTER 88. AGAINST JULIAN, SIX BOOKS. Meanwhile the four books of Julian the Pelagian, which I mentioned above, also came into our hands; in which I discovered that those things which the man who had sent them to Count Valerius had culled from them, had not all been written to that same Count in the way in which they had been said by Julian, but that some of them had been somewhat altered.
60:312
scripsi ergo sex libros aduersus illos quattuor, sed meorum duo primi testimoniis sanctorum, qui fidem catholicam post apostolos defenderunt, Iuliani inpudentiam redarguunt, qui tamquam Manicheorum dogma nobis obiciendum putauit, quia ex Adam trahi dicimus originale peccatum, quod per lauacrum regenerationis non solum in maioribus uerum etiam in paruulis soluitur. quantum autem ipse Iulianus quibusdam sententiis suis adiuuet Manicheos, in primi libri mei parte posteriore monstraui. ceteri autem nostri quattuor redduntur illis singulis singuli.
I therefore wrote six books against those four; but of mine the first two, by the testimonies of the saints who defended the Catholic faith after the apostles, refute the impudence of Julian, who thought that the doctrine of the Manichaeans was to be laid to our charge, because we say that original sin is drawn from Adam, which is loosed through the laver of regeneration not only in adults but even in infants. But how much Julian himself, by certain of his opinions, aids the Manichaeans, I showed in the latter part of my first book. The remaining four of ours, however, are rendered one to each of his single books.
60:313
But in the fifth volume of this so great and so laboured a work, where I mentioned that a deformed husband was wont, lest his wife should bear deformed offspring, to set before her in intercourse a beautiful picture, I set down as if certain the name of the man who was wont to do this, whereas it is uncertain, because my memory deceived me. For Soranus, an author of medicine, wrote that a king of Cyprus was wont to do this, but did not put down his proper name. This work begins thus: 'Your insults and slanderous words, Julian.' CHAPTER 89. ON FAITH, HOPE, AND CHARITY, ONE BOOK.
60:314
I also wrote a book On Faith, Hope, and Charity, when the man to whom it was addressed had asked me for some small work of mine that would never leave his hands — the kind of thing the Greeks call an enchiridion. In it I believe I have gathered together carefully enough how God is to be worshipped, which divine Scripture defines to be man's true wisdom. This book begins thus: 'It cannot be told, most beloved son Laurentius, how greatly I delight in your learning.' CHAPTER XC. ON THE CARE TO BE TAKEN FOR THE DEAD, TO BISHOP PAULINUS, ONE BOOK. I wrote the book On the Care to be Taken for the Dead when I had been asked by letter whether it profits anyone after death that his body is buried near the memorial of some saint.
60:315
Hic liber sic incipit: Sanctitati tuae, coepiscope uenerande Pauline .. CAPVT XCI. DE OCTO DVLCITI QVAESTIONIBVS LIBER VNVS. Liber, quem praenotaui de octo Dulciti quaestionibus, non esset in hoc opere commemorandus inter libros meos, cum sit confectus ex his, quae a me in aliis antea conscripta sunt. nisi et disputationis aliquid a nobis interpositum reperiretur in eo, et uni earum quaestionum non ex opusculo aliquo meo responsionem, sed tunc quae potuit occurrere reddidi. Hic liber sic incipit: Quantum mihi uideatur, dilectissime fili Dulciti . CAPVT XCII. AD VALENTINVM ET CVM ILLO MONACHOS. DE GRATIA ET LIBERO ARBITRIO LIBER VNVS.
This book begins thus: 'To your Holiness, venerable fellow-bishop Paulinus...' CHAPTER XCI. ON THE EIGHT QUESTIONS OF DULCITIUS, ONE BOOK. The book which I have entitled On the Eight Questions of Dulcitius would not have to be mentioned in this work among my books, since it is put together out of things previously written by me in other works — were it not that some element of discussion inserted by us is found in it, and that to one of those questions I gave a reply not drawn from any work of mine, but such as could then occur to me. This book begins thus: 'As far as it seems to me, most beloved son Dulcitius...' CHAPTER XCII. TO VALENTINUS AND THE MONKS WITH HIM. ON GRACE AND FREE WILL, ONE BOOK.
60:316
On account of those who, when the grace of God is defended, think that free will is thereby denied, and so themselves defend free will as to deny the grace of God, asserting that it is given according to our merits, I wrote a book whose title is On Grace and Free Will. And I wrote it to those monks of Hadrumetum, in whose monastery a controversy on this matter had begun to arise, so that some of them were compelled to consult me. This book begins thus: 'On account of those who, concerning man's free will...' CHAPTER XCIII. TO THE SAME AS ABOVE, ON REBUKE AND GRACE, BOOK I.
60:317
Hic liber sic incipit: Lectis litteris uestris, Valentine frater dilectissime . Haec opera nonaginta et tria in libris ducentis triginta et duobus me dictasse recolui, quando haec retractaui. utrum adhuc essem aliquos dictaturus ignorans, atque ipsam eorum retractationem in libris duobus edidi urgentibus fratribus, antequam epistulas et sermones in populum, alias dictatas alios a me dictos, retractare coepissem.
Again to the same men I wrote another book, which I entitled On Rebuke and Grace, when it had been reported to me that someone there had said that no one is to be rebuked if he does not keep God's precepts, but that one must only pray for him, that he may keep them. This book begins thus: 'Having read your letter, most beloved brother Valentinus...' I have recalled that I dictated these ninety-three works in two hundred and thirty-two books, when I reviewed them, not knowing whether I should yet dictate any more; and I issued this very review of them in two books, at the urging of the brethren, before I began to review the letters and the sermons to the people — the former dictated, the latter delivered by me.
