And now I have come to show you the truth. Behold, three kings have withstood in Persia, and the fourth shall be rich with great riches beyond them all; and when he grows strong in his riches, he shall rise up against every king of the Greeks. And now I will announce the truth to you. Behold, yet three kings shall arise in Persia, and the fourth shall be rich with great riches beyond them all; and after he has gained mastery of his riches, he shall rise up against all the kingdoms of the Greeks.
And a mighty king shall stand up and shall rule with great dominion and shall do as he may wish. And a mighty king shall arise and shall rule with great dominion and shall do according to his will.
And when he has arisen, his kingdom shall be shattered and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven, not according to his might nor according to the dominion he wielded; for his kingdom shall be removed, and he shall teach these things to others. And as soon as his kingdom stands, it shall be shattered and shall be divided toward the four winds of heaven, and not to his posterity nor according to the dominion he ruled; for his kingdom shall be plucked up, and to others besides these.
And he shall strengthen the kingdom of Egypt; and one of the rulers shall prevail over him and shall rule with great dominion—his dominion shall be a great dominion. And the king of the south shall grow strong; and one of his rulers shall grow strong against him and shall rule with great dominion over his authority.
[Old Greek] And at the completion of years he will bring them, and the king of Egypt will enter the kingdom of the north to make treaties; and he will by no means prevail, for his arm will not maintain strength, and his arm will grow numb, and so the arms of those journeying with him; and he will remain only for hours. [Theodotion] And after his years they will ally with one another, and the daughter of the king of the south will come to the king of the north to make treaties with him; but she will not retain the strength of an arm, nor will his seed stand. And she will be handed over, and those who bring her, and the young woman, and he who strengthened her in those times.
[Old Greek] And a shoot will arise from his root, by itself, and the king of the north will come against his army in his own strength, and he will cause tumult and prevail. [Theodotion] And one will stand up out of the flower of her root, out of the place established for him; and he will come against the army and enter the supports of the king of the north, and will deal with them and prevail.
[Old Greek] And he will overthrow their gods together with their molten images, and their throngs together with the vessels of the things they prize; the silver and the gold they will carry away into captivity to Egypt; and there will be a year for the king of the north. [Theodotion] And indeed their gods together with their molten images, every prized vessel of theirs of silver and of gold, he will carry with the captivity into Egypt; and he himself will stand above the king of the north.
[Old Greek] And he will enter the kingdom of Egypt for days, and will return to his own land. [Theodotion] And he will enter the kingdom of the king of the south, and will turn back to his own land.
[Old Greek] And his son — he will be provoked, and will gather an assembly of a great throng, and will come in against it, sweeping all along; he will pass through and return, and will be exasperated exceedingly. [Theodotion] And his sons will gather a throng of many forces, and he will come, coming on and flooding over, and will pass through and settle down, and will grapple as far as his stronghold.
[Old Greek] And the king of Egypt will be enraged and will make war with the king of the north, and the assembled host will be delivered into his hands. [Theodotion] And the king of the south will turn savage and will go out and make war with the king of the north; and he will set up a great throng, yet the throng will be delivered into his hand.
[Old Greek] And he will take the host, and his heart will be lifted up; and he will trouble many, yet he will by no means be afraid. [Theodotion] And he will take the throng, and his heart will be lifted up; and he will cast down tens of thousands, yet he will not prevail.
[Old Greek] And the king of the north will return and will gather the host of a city, greater than the first; at the completion of the season of a year he will enter into it against him with a great throng and with much money. [Theodotion] And the king of the north will return and will bring a throng greater than the former; and at the end of the seasons of years he will come on, entering in with great force and with much substance.
[Old Greek] And in those times designs will rise up against the king of Egypt; and he will rebuild what has fallen of your nation, and will rise up in order to establish the prophecy; but they will stumble. [Theodotion] And in those times many will rise up against the king of the south; and the sons of the pestilent ones of your people will exalt themselves in order to establish a vision; but they will grow weak.
[Old Greek] And the king of the north will come on and will turn back his spears and will take the fortified city; and the arms of the king of Egypt will stand with his mighty men, yet he will have no strength to withstand him. [Theodotion] And the king of the north will come in and will pour out a siege mound and will capture fortified cities; and the arms of the king of the south will not stand, and his chosen men will rise up, yet there will be no strength to stand.
[Old Greek] And the one who comes in against him will act according to his own will, and there will be no one standing against him; and he will stand in the land, and all things will be accomplished in his hands. [Theodotion] And the one who comes in against him will act according to his own will, and there is no one standing before his face; and he will stand in the land of Sabi, and it will be brought to completion in his hand.
[Old Greek] And he will set his face to come on by force in all his work; and he will make treaties with him, and will give him a daughter of a man in order to corrupt her; but she will not be persuaded, and it will not come to pass. [Theodotion] And he will set his face to enter with the strength of his whole kingdom; and he will make everything upright with him; and he will give him a daughter of the women in order to destroy her; but she will not remain, nor will she be his.
[Old Greek] And he will set his face toward the sea and will take many; and he will turn back the wrath of their reproach with an oath, according to his own reproach. [Theodotion] And he will turn his face to the islands and will capture many of them; and he will put an end to rulers of their reproach; but his own reproach will return upon him.
[Old Greek] He will turn his face to strengthen his own land; but he will stumble and fall, and will not be found. [Theodotion] And he will turn his face to the strength of his own land; but he will grow weak and fall, and will not be found.
[Old Greek] And from his root there will arise a plant of the kingdom, for a raising up — a man who strikes the glory of a king; and in the last days he will be broken, and not in anger nor in war. [Theodotion] And from his root there will arise a plant of the kingdom, upon the place established for him, one who imposes exactions, exacting the glory of the kingdom; and in those days he will be broken, and not openly nor in war.
[Old Greek] And a contemptible one will arise in his place, and the glory of a king will not be given to him; and he will come suddenly — the king will prevail by what is allotted to him. [Theodotion] He will stand upon the place established for him. He was set at naught, and they did not give him the glory of a kingdom; and he will come in a time of plenty and will seize kingdoms by slippery dealings.
[Old Greek] And the arms that have been broken he will break from before him. [Theodotion] And the arms of the one who floods will be flooded away from before him, and they will be broken, and a leader of a covenant as well.
[Old Greek] And by means of the covenant, and of a people arrayed with him, he will practice falsehood, and against a strong nation with a very small nation. [Theodotion] And from the alliances made with him he will practice deceit; and he will go up and will overpower him with a small nation.
[Old Greek] Suddenly he will lay a city waste, and will do what his fathers did not do, nor the fathers of his fathers; plunder and spoils and money he will give to them; and against the strong city he will scheme, yet his reckonings come to nothing. [Theodotion] And in a time of plenty and into fertile regions he will come, and will do what his fathers did not do, nor the fathers of his fathers; plunder and spoils and substance he will scatter among them; and against Egypt he will reckon his reckonings, and that until a time.
[Old Greek] And his strength and his heart will be roused against the king of Egypt with a great throng; and the king of Egypt will be provoked to war with an exceedingly mighty throng, yet he will not stand, for a scheme will be devised against him. [Theodotion] And his strength and his heart will be roused against the king of the south with a great force; and the king of the south will join battle with a great and exceedingly mighty force, yet he will not stand, for they will reckon reckonings against him.
[Old Greek] And his cares will consume him, and they will turn him back; and he will pass through and sweep along, and many wounded will fall. [Theodotion] And they will eat his provisions and will crush him; and he will flood over forces, and many wounded will fall.
[Old Greek] And two kings alone will dine together and will eat at one table, and they will speak lies; yet they will not prosper, for the consummation is still for an appointed time. [Theodotion] And as for both the kings, their hearts are set on evil, and at one table they will speak lies; yet it will not succeed, for the end is still for an appointed time.
[Old Greek] And he will return to his land with much money, and his heart is against the covenant of the Holy One; he will act, and will return to his land. [Theodotion] And he will return to his land with much substance, and his heart is against a holy covenant; and he will act, and will return to his land.
[Old Greek] At an appointed time, and he will enter Egypt; and it will not be as the first and the last. [Theodotion] At the appointed time he will return and will come into the south; and it will not be as the first and as the last.
[Old Greek] And Romans will come and will drive him out and will rebuke him sternly; and he will turn back and be enraged against the covenant of the Holy One; and he will act, and will turn back and scheme against them, because they forsook the covenant of the Holy One. [Theodotion] And the Kitians who go forth will come in against him, and he will be humbled; and he will turn back and rage against a holy covenant; and he will act, and will turn back and give heed to those who forsook a holy covenant.
[Old Greek] And arms from him will stand up, and they will defile the sanctuary of fear, and they will remove the sacrifice, and they will set up an abomination of desolation. [Theodotion] And seed from him will rise up, and they will profane the sanctuary of the dominion, and they will remove the perpetual offering, and they will set up an abomination that has been made desolate.
[Old Greek] And by sins against a covenant they will defile, among a hard people; but the people who know these things will be strong and will act. [Theodotion] And those who act lawlessly against a covenant will bring others on by slippery dealings; but a people, those who know his God, will be strong and will act.
[Old Greek] And those of the nation who take thought will give understanding to many; but they will stumble by the sword and will be worn out by it, and in captivity and in the plundering of days they will be defiled. [Theodotion] And those of the people who are prudent will give understanding in many things; but they will be weakened by sword and by flame and by captivity and by the plundering of days.
[Old Greek] And when they are broken, they will gather a little strength; and many will be gathered to them at a city, and many as in an allotment. [Theodotion] And when they grow weak, they will be helped with a little help; and many will attach themselves to them by slippery dealings.
[Old Greek] And some of those who understand will purpose to cleanse themselves and to be chosen and to be purified, until the time of consummation; for the time is yet for appointed hours. [Theodotion] And some of those who understand will grow weak, so as to refine them and to choose them and to lay them bare, until the time of the end; for it is yet for an appointed time.
[Old Greek] And the king will act according to his own will, and he will be enraged, and will exalt himself above every god, and against the God of gods he will speak outrageous things; and he will prosper until the wrath is completed, for upon him the consummation comes. [Theodotion] And he will act according to his own will, and the king will exalt himself and be magnified above every god, and will speak monstrous things; and he will succeed until the wrath is completed, for it comes to a consummation.
[Old Greek] And he will by no means take thought for the gods of his fathers, nor will he take thought for the desire of a woman, for in everything he will exalt himself, and mighty nations will be subjected to him. [Theodotion] And he will not regard any of the gods of his fathers, nor the desire of women, nor will he regard any god at all, for he will be magnified above all.
[Old Greek] In his place he will make a move; and a god whom his fathers did not know he will honor with gold and silver and costly stone and with precious things. [Theodotion] And the god Maozin he will glorify in his place, and a god whom his fathers did not know he will glorify with gold and silver and precious stone and with precious things.
[Old Greek] He will deal thus with cities, and to a strong fortress he will come with a foreign god; whomever he acknowledges he will increase in glory, and he will have great dominion over it, and he will parcel out land as a gift. [Theodotion] And he will deal thus with the fortresses of refuges, together with a foreign god; and he will increase glory, and will subject many to them, and will divide land out for gifts.
[Old Greek] And at the hour of consummation the king of Egypt will lock horns with him, and the king of the north will be enraged at him, with chariots and with many horses and with many ships, and he will enter the land of Egypt. [Theodotion] And at the end of the time he will lock horns with the king of the south; and the king of the north will be gathered against him with chariots and with horsemen and with many ships, and he will enter the land and will crush it and pass through.
[Old Greek] And he will come upon my land. [Theodotion] And he will enter the land of Sabi, and many will grow weak; but these will be delivered out of his hand: Edom and Moab and the chief of the sons of Ammon.
[Old Greek] And in the land of Egypt there will not be in it anyone escaping. [Theodotion] And he will stretch out his hand against the land, and the land of Egypt will not be for deliverance.
[Old Greek] And he will take control of the place of the gold and the place of the silver, and of all the desirable things of Egypt; and Libyans and Ethiopians will be in his throng. [Theodotion] And he will have dominion over the hidden stores of the gold and the silver, and over all the desirable things of Egypt and of the Libyans and Ethiopians in their strongholds.
[Old Greek] And a report from the east and the north will trouble him, and he will go out with fierce rage and with a sword, to wipe out and to kill many. [Theodotion] And reports and urgent tidings from the east and from the north will trouble him, and he will come with great rage, to wipe out and to devote many to destruction.
[Old Greek] And then he will set up his tent between the seas and the mountain of the good pleasure of the Holy One; and the hour of his consummation will come, and there will be no one helping him. [Theodotion] And he will pitch his tent, ephadano, between the seas, at the holy mountain Sabi; and he will come to his portion, and there is no one rescuing him.
