And that God the Father of all was about to bring Christ up into heaven after raising him from the dead, and to keep him there until he should smite the demons who are his enemies, and the number of those foreknown by him as good and virtuous should be completed — for whose sake he has not yet brought about the conflagration — hear the words spoken through David the prophet. These are they: "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies the footstool of your feet. The Lord shall send forth from Jerusalem a rod of power for you; and rule in the midst of your enemies. With you is dominion in the day of your power, in the splendors of your saints; from the womb before the morning star I have begotten you." Now the saying "He shall send forth for you a rod of power from Jerusalem" is a prediction of the mighty word which the apostles, going forth from Jerusalem, proclaimed everywhere; and although death has been decreed against those who teach, or in any way confess, the name of Christ, we everywhere both embrace and teach it. And if you too read these words as enemies, you can do no more, as we said before, than to kill us — which brings no harm at all to us, but to you and to all who unjustly hate us and do not repent it works everlasting punishment through fire.
