When this emperor had paid the debt of nature after his twenty-first year, Antoninus, called Pius, succeeded to the Roman rule. In his first year, when Telesphorus departed this life in the eleventh year of his ministry, Hyginus received the office of the bishopric of the Romans. Now Irenaeus relates that Telesphorus distinguished his end by martyrdom, and makes plain at the same time that in the time of the said Hyginus, bishop of the Romans, both Valentinus, the introducer of his own heresy, and Cerdon, the originator of the error connected with Marcion, became known at Rome.
