And it came to pass, after the death of Jacob, that the children of Israel multiplied in the land of Egypt, and became a great people; and they were all of one heart, so that each brother loved his brother, and each man helped his brother; and they multiplied exceedingly.
And Joseph died, a hundred and ten years old; seventeen years he lived in the land of Canaan, and ten years he served, and twenty-three years he was in prison, and eighty years he was under the king, ruling over all the land of Egypt.
And he died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. And he commanded the children of Israel before he died, that they should carry up his bones with them when they went out from the land of Egypt.
And he made them swear concerning his bones; for he knew that the Egyptians would not again bring him out and bury him on the day in the land of Canaan.
And they were unable to go up, for another new king reigned over Egypt, and he was stronger than them, and he turned back to the land of Canaan, and the gates of Egypt were shut, and there was no one going out and no one coming in to Egypt.
And Joseph died in the forty-sixth jubilee, in the sixth week, in its second year, and they buried him in the land of Egypt; and all his brothers died after him.
Behold, the people of the children of Israel have grown and multiplied more than we; come, let us deal craftily with them before they multiply, and let us afflict them with bondage before war comes upon us, and before they too fight against us; otherwise they too will join with the enemy and go out from our land, for their hearts and their faces are toward the land of Canaan.
And they made them serve with rigour, and the more they dealt evilly with them, the more they increased and multiplied.
他們用嚴酷壓制他們服役;只是越發苦待他們,他們越發增多繁衍。
