1:2453
至於那些尚未完全喪盡廉恥的婦女,雖把外人擋在外面,卻與自己的僕人同浴,在奴隸面前赤身,任他們替自己擦身,把毫無顧忌的觸摸之便,給了那暗自被慾望蜷伏盤踞的人;
But those women who are not so utterly past blushing shut out strangers, yet bathe with their own servants and strip naked before slaves, and are rubbed down by them, granting to him who cowers under desire the fearless freedom of touch;
1:2454
for those brought in alongside the naked mistresses at the baths gain practice in stripping themselves for the boldness of lust, circumscribing fear by an evil habit.
1:2455
古時的競技者羞於使人赤身示眾,便繫著遮羞布進行比賽,守住了他們的羞恥之心;
And the athletes of old, ashamed to show a man naked, accomplished their contests in loincloths, preserving their modesty;
1:2456
但這些婦女卻想藉著她們的薄衫,使自己連同羞恥一併顯為美麗,然而事與願違,她們終究被證明是邪惡的;
but these women wish, by their tunic, to appear beautiful along with their modesty, yet against their will they are nonetheless proved to be wicked;
1:2457
因為身體中那淫蕩的情慾,正是藉著薄衫格外顯露出來,就如患水腫者那積在皮下的水液一般;
for through it especially is the lasciviousness of desire in the body made manifest, just as in those who suffer from dropsy the fluid penned up beneath the surface;
1:2458
and the diseased state in both cases is recognized from the appearance.
1:2459
因此男人既要作婦女在真理上高尚的榜樣,就當以與她們同處時寬衣為恥,並防備那滑溜的目光;
Men, therefore, becoming a noble example of truth to women, ought to be ashamed of stripping in their company, and to guard against slippery glances;
1:2460
for "he who looks too curiously," it says, "has already sinned."
1:2461
At home, then, one must respect parents and servants; in the streets, those one meets; in the baths, the women; in solitude, oneself; and everywhere the Word, who is everywhere, and "without Him was not anything made."
1:2462
For only thus will one remain unfallen, if he always reckons that God is present with him.
1:2463
That the Christian alone is rich.
1:2464
Wealth, then, must be partaken of worthily and shared humanely, not in a vulgar or boastful way, nor must the love of the beautiful be perverted into self-love and want of taste, lest perhaps someone say to us:
1:2465
"His horse is worth fifteen talents, or his estate, or his servant, or his gold, but he himself is worth three coppers."
1:2466
無論如何,把婦女的妝飾和主人的僕役除去,你就會發現主人與用銀子買來的奴隸毫無分別——無論在步態上、神情上,還是聲音上;
At any rate, strip away the women's adornment and the masters' servants, and you will find the masters differing in nothing from the slaves bought with silver—not in gait, not in look, not in voice;
1:2467
thus, then, they resemble their slaves.
1:2468
But they actually differ from their servants by being weaker and by having been reared in a more sickly fashion.
1:2469
因此,最好在各樣教訓中時時反覆吟詠這一點:善人既自守又公義,便把財寶積攢在天上;
It is best, then, to chant this among the doctrines at every turn: that the good man, being self-controlled and righteous, lays up his treasures in heaven;
1:2470
這人就是變賣了地上家業、分給窮人,並尋得了那不朽財寶的人——在那裡沒有蟲蛀,也沒有盜賊;
this is he who has sold his earthly possessions and given to the poor, and has found the imperishable treasure, where neither moth nor robber comes;
1:2471
這人真是有福的,縱使他渺小、軟弱、卑微,卻擁有最大的財富,實在富足;
this man is truly blessed, even if he be small and weak and obscure, and is truly rich with the greatest wealth;
1:2472
but if a man be richer than Cinyras and Midas, yet be unjust and arrogant, like the one who reveled in purple and fine linen and despised Lazarus, he is wretched and lives miserably and shall not truly live.
1:2473
因此在我看來,財富彷彿一條蛇:人若不曉得如何安然抓住牠,從遠處無危險地揪住那畜類尾巴的末端,牠就會纏住人的手並咬人;
Wealth, then, seems to me to resemble a serpent: unless one knows how to grasp it harmlessly, hanging the creature up from afar without danger by the very tip of its tail, it will coil about his hand and bite;
1:2474
and wealth, too, is dangerous, gliding along the experienced or inexperienced grasp of it to cling fast and bite, unless one, despising it greatly, uses it knowingly, so that, by the incantation of the Word, the creature may be scraped tame, while he himself remains unharmed.
1:2475
然而看來,那擁有更有價值之物的人,雖是唯一真正富足的人,卻一直不為人所識;
But, as it seems, the man who possesses things of greater worth, though he was truly the only rich man, remained unrecognised;
1:2476
那真有價值的,不是寶石,不是銀子,不是衣裳,也不是身體的美貌,而是德行——這德行就是藉著導師傳授給我們、供我們操練的道;
and the things of great worth are not stone, nor silver, nor raiment, nor bodily beauty, but virtue, which is the Word handed down through the Instructor for our practice;
1:2477
this Word it is that forswears luxury, exhorts to self-service, and extols the frugality that is the offspring of self-control: "Receive instruction," it says, "and not silver, and knowledge rather than tested gold;"
1:2478
"for wisdom is better than precious stones, and nothing of value is worthy of it."
1:2479
「願人收取我的果子勝過收取金子、寶石和銀子;
"That I may be reaped as fruit above gold and precious stone and silver;
1:2480
for my produce is better than choice silver."
1:2481
若要加以區分:就讓那擁有眾多家產、像個骯髒錢袋般塞滿金子的人作富人;而讓那公義的人作合宜有度的人,因為合宜的有序,乃是在恰當的安排中,按需要量度地處置與施與;
And if one must also distinguish: let the rich man be the one who possesses much, stuffed with gold like a filthy money-bag; but let the well-ordered man be the righteous one, since good order is an arrangement, in due fashion, of disposals and bestowals, measured according to need;
1:2482
for there are those who sow and gather yet more, concerning whom it is written:
1:2483
"He has scattered abroad, he has given to the poor; his righteousness abides for ever."
1:2484
可見能分享的人才是富足的,顯明有福之人的,乃是分享,而非佔有;
It is the one who shares who is rich, and it is the sharing, not the possessing, that shows the blessed man;
1:2485
and the fruit of the soul is liberality in giving.
1:2486
再者,但願美善之物唯獨被善人所擁有,而善人就是基督徒;
Moreover, let good things be possessable only by the good, and the good are the Christians;
1:2487
至於愚昧或放蕩的人,既不能領悟何為善,也不能得著善的擁有;
but a foolish or unchaste man could neither have perception of the good nor obtain its possession;
1:2488
therefore good things are possessable by the Christians alone.
1:2489
再沒有甚麼比這些美善之物更為豐富的了;
And nothing is richer than these good things;
1:2490
for true wealth is righteousness, and the Word, more precious than any treasure, is increased not from flocks and lands but is bestowed by God—an inalienable wealth (the soul alone is His treasure)—the best possession for its possessor, in truth rendering man blessed.
1:2491
For whoever has it in him to crave nothing of the things not in our power, and to attain those things which he does craves, and moreover to receive from God what he piously desires by asking for it—how is this man not abundantly and wholly rich, having God as an eternal treasure? "To him who asks," it says, "it shall be given, and to him who knocks it shall be opened."
1:2492
If God denies nothing, all things belong to the God-fearing man.
1:2493
That frugality is a good provision for the journey for the Christian.
1:2494
然而奢華一旦漂流入種種享樂,便成為人慘重的沉船之禍;
But luxury, wandering off into pleasures, becomes a grievous shipwreck to men;
1:2495
for this pleasant and inglorious life of the many is alien to true love of the beautiful and to refined pleasures.
1:2496
For by nature man is a lofty and proud creature, a seeker after the beautiful, inasmuch as he is the creation of the only Beautiful One; but a life bent over the belly is for him ignoble, reproachful, hateful, and ridiculous.
1:2497
與神性最為背道而馳的,乃是貪愛逸樂——像麻雀那樣貪食,像豬和山羊那樣交合;
Most alien to the divine nature is the love of pleasure—to feed like sparrows and to mate like swine and goats;
1:2498
for to deem pleasure a good is the mark of utter want of taste, and the love of wealth drives a man out of right living, persuading him to lose all shame before shameful things, provided only he have the power, like a beast, to eat all manner of things and likewise to drink, and to give to every lust a full surfeit.
1:2499
On this account he most rarely inherits the kingdom of God.
1:2500
Where, then, are all those delicacies prepared, or for what but to fill one belly? The cesspools convict the uncleanness of gluttony, into which our bellies spit out the leavings of the feast.
1:2501
And where do they gather together so many cup-bearers, when they can be satisfied with a single cup? And where the chests of garments? And the gold, where? And the trinkets, where? They are prepared for clothes-thieves and evildoers and for greedy eyes.
1:2502
"Let not mercy and faith forsake you," says the Scripture.
1:2503
看哪,我們也有提斯比人以利亞作儉樸的美好榜樣,當他坐在羅騰樹下時,天使給他送來食物;
Behold, then, we have also Elijah the Tishbite as a fair example of frugality, when he sat down under the broom-tree and the angel brought him food;
1:2504
it was a barley cake baked on coals and a cruse of water.
1:2505
Such was the meal the Lord provided him.
1:2506
因此,我們既朝向真理而行,就必須束緊腰帶、輕裝上路;
We, then, journeying toward truth, must of necessity be well-girt;
1:2507
for "do not carry," the Lord said, "a purse, nor a wallet, nor sandals"—that is, do not acquire wealth that is treasured up in a purse alone, do not fill your own storehouses as though laying up the seed in a wallet, but share also with the needy; do not busy yourselves with beasts of burden and servants, who, like sandals, bear the burdens for the journeys of the rich—these things being spoken allegorically.
1:2508
因此我們必須拋棄那一大堆器皿、那些金銀酒杯,以及成群的僕役,反倒接受導師所賜美好而莊重的同伴——親手勞作與儉樸;
We must therefore cast away the multitude of vessels, the silver and gold drinking-cups, and the throng of servants, taking up instead, as fair and dignified companions provided by the Instructor, self-service and frugality;
1:2509
誠然,人必須與道和諧地同行,縱使有妻子兒女相隨;
and indeed one must walk in due harmony with the Word, even if a wife and children accompany one;
1:2510
the household is no burden when it has learned to follow along with a self-controlled wayfarer.
1:2511
——這些人乃是把儉樸連同自守的莊重,作為通往天國旅程的資糧帶在身上;
—those who carry frugality, together with self-controlled dignity, as their provision for the journey to heaven;
1:2512
正如腳是鞋的尺度,照樣,各人的身體乃是他財產的尺度;
and just as the foot is the measure of the sandal, so each one's body is the measure of his possessions;
1:2513
but the superfluous things, which they indeed call adornments, and the furnishings of the rich, are a burden, not an adornment of the body.
1:2514
凡竭力要升入諸天的人,必須把行善當作一根美好的手杖隨身攜帶,並且在與受苦者分享之後,便得享那真正的安息;
He who strives to ascend into the heavens must carry about beneficence as a noble staff, and, having shared with the afflicted, must partake of the true rest;
1:2515
for the Scripture agrees that a man's own wealth is the ransom of his soul—that is, if he be rich, he shall be saved by his sharing.
1:2516
For just as those wells that are naturally apt to gush forth, when drawn off, well up again to their former measure, so sharing, being a good fountain of love for mankind, when it gives a share of its drink to the thirsty, increases again and is filled—in the way that milk is wont to flow into the breasts that are suckled or milked.
1:2517
因為以全能之神——道——為己有的人一無所缺,並且永不缺乏他所需要的任何東西;
For he who has God the Almighty as the Word is in want of nothing, and never lacks any of the things he needs;
1:2518
for the Word is a possession in want of nothing and the cause of all abundance.
1:2519
But if anyone should say that he has often seen a righteous man in want of bread—this is rare, and occurs where no other righteous man is present; nevertheless let him also read this:
1:2520
"For the righteous man shall not live by bread alone, but by the word of the Lord," who is the true bread, the bread of the heavens.
1:2521
因此善人決不至於貧乏,只要他持守對神純全的認信;
The good man, then, is never destitute, so long as he keeps sound his confession toward God;
1:2522
因為他能向萬有之父祈求並領受他所需要的一切,又能享用他自己的份,只要他持守那子;
for it is possible for him to ask and to receive from the Father of all whatsoever he may need, and to enjoy his own portion, if he keeps the Son;
1:2523
and this too is possible: to feel no want whatsoever.
1:2524
我們這作導師的道把財富賜給我們,那些藉著祂得享無所缺乏之人富足起來,也毫無可嫉妒之處;
This pedagogical Word of ours gives us wealth, and there is no grudging that those should be rich who acquire freedom from want through Him;
1:2525
he who has this wealth shall inherit the kingdom of God.
1:2526
That images and examples are a most important part of right teaching.
1:2527
If any one of you shall flee luxury to the end, being nourished in frugality, he will the more easily practise the enduring of involuntary toils, by continually making the voluntary afflictions exercises against persecutions, so that when he comes to necessary toils and fears and griefs, he is not unpractised in steadfast endurance.
1:2528
For this reason, indeed, we have no homeland upon earth, that we may despise earthly possessions.
1:2529
儉樸乃是最為富足的,因它是一種穩固的習性,在當用之處按當用的程度、合宜地支付時,毫不短缺;
And frugality is most rich, being a settled disposition that is not deficient in expenditures upon the things one ought, and as far as one ought, when paid out fittingly;
1:2530
for outlays are payments [of dues].
1:2531
至於妻子當如何與丈夫一同生活,並關於親手勞作、持家、使用僕役,以及婚姻的時節和一切合宜於婦女之事——這些我們要在論婚姻的講論中詳述;
Now how a wife ought to live together with her husband, and concerning self-service, housekeeping, and the use of servants, and moreover about the season of marriage and all the things that befit women—these we shall treat in the discourse on marriage;
1:2532
but those things that are suitable to instruction, these alone must now be set forth by us, as we sketch in outline the life of Christians.
1:2533
誠然,大部分的事已經講論並施以教導了;至於還剩下的,我們現在就要陳明;
And indeed most things have already been said and brought under instruction; but what yet remains, we shall now lay down;
1:2534
for examples are no small impetus toward salvation.
1:2535
悲劇中說:「忒勒瑪科斯沒有殺死俄底修斯的妻子;
The tragedy says: "Telemachus did not slay the wife of Odysseus;
1:2536
for she did not wed husband to husband, but the wedded couch remained whole in the house."
1:2537
有人在責備淫蕩的姦淫時,展示了一幅自守的美好圖畫——就是對丈夫的鍾愛;
Someone, reproaching lewd adultery, displayed a fair image of self-control—love of one's husband;
1:2538
and the Lacedaemonians, forcing the Helot servants—Helots is a name for servants—to get drunk, showed to themselves the works of drunkenness, by way of treatment and correction for the self-controlled.
1:2539
Guarding, then, against the unseemliness of those men, lest they themselves should fall into the same condemnations, they were instructed by the reproach of the drunkards, profiting toward their own blamelessness.
1:2540
For of men, some have been saved by being taught, while others, self-taught, have either emulated or sought after virtue.
1:2541
"That man is altogether best who of himself perceives all things;"
1:2542
這人就是亞伯拉罕,那尋求神的人;
this is Abraham, who sought after God;
1:2543
這些人就是門徒,那被道所說服的人;
these are the disciples, who were persuaded by the Word;
1:2544
for this reason the one was called "friend," and the others "apostles"—one and the same God: the one inquiring diligently, the others proclaiming.
1:2545
And both are peoples, and of both these the hearers: the one profited through inquiry, the other saved through finding.
1:2546
"But he who neither perceives of himself nor, hearing from another, lays it up in his heart—that man, again, is a useless man."
1:2547
還有另一種百姓,就是外邦人——這無用的百姓,不跟隨基督;
There is yet another people, the heathen—this useless people that does not follow Christ;
1:2548
但那慈愛的導師仍以多種方式使他們得益:有些事上加以勸勉,另有些事上加以責備,又有些事上向我們指出別人犯罪的羞恥,並顯明隨之而來的刑罰,既撫慰又警誡人的靈魂,藉著那些先前受苦之人的明證,巧妙地設計出一種慈愛的、使人遠離罪惡之法;
but the loving Instructor, profiting them nonetheless in manifold ways, in some things exhorted, in others reproached, and in yet others pointed out to us the shame of others who sinned, and revealed the punishment that followed thereon, at once charming and admonishing the soul, devising a loving turning-away from vice through the demonstration of those who had suffered before;
1:2549
by which images He most clearly both stopped those who were ill-disposed and restrained those who ventured the like, established others in patient endurance, made others cease from vice, and even healed some, who by the contemplation of the like were turned toward the better.
1:2550
因為有誰跟隨人走在路上,見前面的人跌入坑中,會不躲開那同樣的危險、防備那罪的路徑呢?又有誰若是個苦行者,既已認清那好名之路,又見前面的競技者已得了獎賞,會不自己也奮力奔向冠冕、效法那前輩呢?神聖智慧的圖畫多有這樣的;
For who, following someone along the road, when the one ahead then fell into a pit, would not turn aside from the equal danger, guarding against the path of sin? And who again, being an ascetic, having learned the road of vainglory and seen the prize—that the contestant before him has received it—does not himself also speed toward the crown, imitating the elder? Many such are the images of divine wisdom;
1:2551
但我只提出一個範例,簡略地陳明出來;
but I will recall one example and set it forth in brief;
1:2552
the calamity of the Sodomites was judgment to those who sinned, but instruction to those who hear of it.
1:2553
所多瑪人因極度的奢華而擱淺於淫蕩之中——肆無忌憚地行姦淫,並對孌童瘋狂地慾火中燒——那洞察萬事的道注視著他們,行不潔之事的人斷不能逃過祂的眼目;那不眠看守人類的主,也沒有任憑他們的淫蕩不受約束;
The Sodomites, having through much luxury run aground into wantonness—committing adultery without fear and madly inflamed for boys—the all-seeing Word looked upon them, He whom it is impossible to escape while doing unholy deeds, nor did the sleepless Guardian of mankind let their wantonness go unchecked;
1:2554
and, turning us away from imitating them, instructing us toward His own self-control, casting punishment upon the sinners lest the unpunished impunity of their licentiousness should gain an influx of license, He commanded Sodom to be burned up, pouring out a little of that wise fire upon their licentiousness, so that their lust, becoming unbridled, might not throw wide open broad gates for those rushing into voluptuousness.
1:2555
因此,所多瑪人所受公義的刑罰,成了人類那合乎理性之拯救的圖像;
The just punishment of the Sodomites, therefore, became an image of the well-reasoned salvation of mankind;
1:2556
for those who have not sinned in like manner with the punished would never undergo a punishment like that of the sinners, being preserved from suffering by not sinning.
1:2557
"For I wish you to know," says Jude, "that God, having once saved a people out of the land of Egypt, the second time destroyed those who did not believe; and the angels who did not keep their own dominion, but abandoned their own habitation, He has kept in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."
1:2558
And little by little, most instructively, he sets forth the images of those being judged:
1:2559
"Woe to them, for they have gone in the way of Cain, and have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam for reward, and have perished in the gainsaying of Korah."
1:2560
For fear preserves from waxing insolent those who are not able to bear the freedom of adoption.
1:2561
For on this account are the chastisements and the threats, that, fearing the penalties, we may abstain from sinning.
1:2562
I could relate to you punishments for love of adornment, and penalties for vainglory—not only for incontinence, but moreover set before you the malicious blasphemies attending wealth, by which the Word, through inspiring fear, holds men back from wrongdoing.
1:2563
But indeed, sparing the length of the treatise, I bring to you the following commandments of the Instructor, that you may keep His threats.
1:2564
For what reason the bath is to be used.
1:2565
—I turned aside while speaking—there are four reasons on account of which we resort to it:
1:2566
either for the sake of cleanliness, or for warmth, or for health, or lastly for pleasure.
1:2567
因此,為享樂而沐浴,是必須拒絕的;
Bathing for the sake of pleasure, then, must be rejected;
1:2568
for the shameless pleasure must be utterly cut out.
1:2569
The bath is to be used by women for the sake of cleanliness and health, but by men for the sake of health alone.
1:2570
And as for warmth, that is superfluous, since it is possible to relieve in other ways the body stiffened by cold.
1:2571
The continual use of the bath wears down the powers and slackens the natural tensions, and often brings on faintings and swoons.
1:2572
For in a way the bodies drink, like the trees, not only through the mouth, but also, in the bath, through the porousness throughout the whole body, as they say.
1:2573
Men have often, when thirsty, then, on stepping into the water, slaked their thirst.
1:2574
因此,浴場縱有些益處,人也不可因此就全然沉溺其中;
Therefore, if the bath is of some benefit, one must not on that account give oneself up wholly to it;
1:2575
古人慣稱浴場為「人的漂洗坊」,因為它使身體比應有的更早殘破,迫使人未老先衰,正如鐵被熔軟一般,肉體因熱氣而變軟;
the ancients used to call them "men's fulling-mills," since they tatter the bodies sooner than is fitting and compel them to age prematurely, boiling them down in the same way as iron, the flesh being softened by the heat;
1:2576
hence we need, as it were, the dipping and tempering of the cold.
1:2577
也不該每逢機會就沐浴,乃是人若太空腹,或反之太飽脹,就當推卻沐浴;
Nor indeed should one bathe on every occasion, but if anyone be too empty, or again too full, the bath must be declined;
1:2578
是的,還要按身體的年歲與一年的時令而定;
yes, and also according to the time of life of the body and the season of the year;
1:2579
for it does not benefit all, nor always, as those wise in such matters agree.
1:2580
對我們而言,適度便已足夠,我們在凡事上都呼求它作我們生命的幫助;
For us, moderation suffices, which we everywhere call upon as a helper for our life;
1:2581
for one ought neither to linger so long in the bath as to need a hand to lead one out, nor to bathe continually and many times a day, like those who frequent the marketplace.
1:2582
Moreover, to be drenched by a multitude of servants is an outrage against one's neighbours, since such persons take more than their share through luxury and are unwilling to understand that the bath ought to be common on equal terms to all who bathe.
1:2583
But one ought above all to wash the soul with the cleansing Word, and the body too at times, on account of the dirt that grows upon it, and indeed at times also to relax one's fatigues.
1:2584
主說:「你們這假冒為善的文士和法利賽人有禍了!因為你們好像粉飾的墳墓;
"For woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites," says the Lord, "for you are like whitewashed tombs;
1:2585
outwardly the tomb appears beautiful, but within it is full of dead men's bones and all uncleanness."
1:2586
And again to the same men He says:
1:2587
"Woe to you, for you cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within they are full of uncleanness."
1:2588
"Cleanse first the inside of the cup, that the outside also may become clean."
1:2589
The best bath, then, is that of the soul, which wipes off the filth and is spiritual, concerning which the prophecy expressly says:
1:2590
"The Lord shall wash away the filth of the sons and daughters of Israel, and shall purge the blood from their midst—the blood of lawlessness and the murders of the prophets."
1:2591
And the Word added the manner of the cleansing, saying:
1:2592
"by the spirit of judgment and by the spirit of burning."
1:2593
But the fleshly washing of the body is accomplished even by water alone, as often happens in the country, where there is no bath-house.
1:2594
That exercises also are to be approved for those who live according to reason.
1:2595
對於少年,縱有浴場在旁,運動也已足夠;
For lads, exercise suffices, even if a bath be at hand;
1:2596
因為其實對男子而言,把運動置於沐浴之先而加以贊同,或許不是小事,因為運動對青年的健康有所助益,能灌注勤奮與進取之心,使他們不單顧念身體的健壯,也顧念靈魂的剛勇;
for indeed, to approve these for men above all things before the baths is perhaps no mean thing, since they have something useful for the young toward health, instilling diligence and ambition to care not only for good bodily condition, but also for good courage of soul;
1:2597
and this, when done without being torn away from the works of higher things, is graceful and not unprofitable.
1:2598
Nor here are women to be exempted from bodily exertion; but they are not to be called to wrestling and running, but to be exercised in wool-working and weaving and, if need be, in attending to the woman at the mill.
1:2599
婦女當親手從倉房取來我們所需要的一切,去推磨對她們也並非羞恥;
Women ought to fetch with their own hands from the storeroom whatever we need, and it is no shame for them to go to the mill;
1:2600
nor indeed is it a reproach for a wife who keeps house and is a helper to busy herself about the cooking, so that it may be pleasing to her husband.
1:2601
她若親自整理床褥,給乾渴的丈夫遞上飲料,並擺上食物,便是極其得體地操練,趨向節制的健康;
And if she should shake up the bed-coverings by herself, and offer drink to her thirsty husband, and set food before him, she would be most decorously exercised toward a temperate health;
1:2602
這樣的婦人,導師是嘉許的,她「伸手作有用之工,手把紡錘;
such a woman the Instructor approves, who "stretches forth her arms to useful tasks, and lays her hands to the spindle;
1:2603
she opens her hands to the poor, and reaches out her wrist to the needy," and was not ashamed to emulate Sarah in that noblest service, ministering to the wayfarers.
1:2604
"Hasten and knead three measures of fine flour, and make cakes baked in the ashes."
1:2605
"And Rachel, the daughter of Laban, came," it says, "with her father's sheep."
1:2606
And it did not suffice to say this, but, teaching freedom from vanity, it added:
1:2607
"For she was tending her father's sheep."
1:2608
And the Scriptures hold out countless examples of frugality together with self-service, and moreover of exercises.
1:2609
至於男子,可讓一些人赤身參與摔跤,另一些人用小球玩「費寧達」的球戲,尤其在陽光下;
Of men, let some, being naked, take part in wrestling, and let others play with the small ball the game of phaininda, especially in the sun;
1:2610
for others the walk is sufficient, as they go out to the country or come down into the city.
1:2611
And if they should also take to the spade, this is no ignoble side-occupation—an economical exercise of farming.
1:2612
But indeed I almost forgot to mention that famous Pittacus, that the king of the Mitylenaeans used to grind grain, employing it as an active exercise.
1:2613
It is good, too, to draw water for oneself and to chop the wood that one will use oneself.
1:2614
And Jacob tended the sheep of Laban that were left, holding a royal sign—a rod of storax-wood—practising to change nature for the better by means of the wood.
1:2615
And for many, at times, even reading aloud is an exercise.
1:2616
誠然,我們所贊同的摔跤,不可為著無用的好勝之心而為,乃要為著排出男子漢的汗水;
And indeed let wrestling, which we have approved, be taken up not for the sake of useless contentiousness, but for the secretions of manly sweat;
1:2617
人絕不可在摔跤那講求技巧、賣弄的一面上花工夫,乃要在那些出於正當摔跤之事上用力——就是頸、手、肋的舒展;
and one must by no means labour at the technical, ostentatious side of it, but at those things that come from upright wrestling—from the unwinding of necks and hands and sides;
1:2618
for such labour, undertaken for the sake of useful and beneficial health with graceful strength, is more orderly and more manly, while the other toils of athletics, professing the practice of postures unbefitting free men, [are to be rejected].
1:2619
And everywhere one must aim at measure.
1:2620
For just as it is best to make toils precede meals, so to toil beyond measure is both worst and wearisome and productive of disease.
1:2621
One ought, then, neither to be altogether idle, nor yet wholly given over to toil.
1:2622
For just as we went through concerning food, similarly in all things and everywhere one ought not to be turned toward voluptuousness and an unchaste mode of life, nor again toward its opposite, the austere extreme, but toward the mean between these—the harmonious and self-controlled, pure of either vice, of luxury and of stinginess.
1:2623
誠然,正如我們先前所說的,親手勞作是一種樸實的鍛鍊——無論是自己穿鞋、自己洗腳,還是抹了油之後自己擦身;
And indeed, as we have also said before, self-service is a humble exercise—both shoeing oneself by oneself, and washing one's own feet, and moreover rubbing oneself down when anointed with oil;
1:2624
and to render the equal recompense in return to the one who has rubbed one, taking turns—this too is an exercise of communal justice; and to sleep beside a sick friend, and to minister to one who is unable, and to wait upon one in need.
1:2625
"And Abraham set before them," it says, "the three, a meal under the tree, and stood by while they ate."
1:2626
Fishing, too, is good, as for Peter, if we have leisure from the necessary studies that are in the Word.
1:2627
But better is this catch which the Lord granted to the disciple, having taught him to fish for men through water, as for fish.
1:2628
A summary survey of the best life.
1:2629
因此,佩戴金飾和穿著較柔軟的衣服,不必完全禁絕,乃要勒住那些不理性的衝動,免得它們挾帶我們衝入奢靡的生活,並藉著過度的放縱把我們擄去;
For this reason, the wearing of gold and the use of softer clothing is not to be cut off altogether, but the irrational impulses are to be bridled, lest they, sweeping us along, hurl us into luxurious living and snatch us away through excessive indulgence;
1:2630
for luxury, when run aground into excess, is terrible—prone to kick and rear and to shake off both the charioteer and the Instructor, who, checking the reins from afar, leads and bears the human horse toward salvation—the irrational part of the soul, that part which is concerned with pleasures and blameworthy appetites and stones and gold and embroidered raiment and the rest of effeminacy, and which becomes savage.
1:2631
having most of all in mind that saying: "Maintaining your conduct among the Gentiles in a holy and good way, so that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, beholding your good works, they may glorify God."
1:2632
The Instructor, then, gives us leave to use plain clothing, and white in colour, as we have said before, so that, accustoming ourselves not to that which is variegated by art but to that which is begotten by nature, and putting away all that is deceitful and that lies against the truth, we may embrace the single and single-faced colour of truth.
1:2633
Sophocles, reproaching a luxurious youth, says:
1:2634
"You are conspicuous in womanish garments."
1:2635
For just as there is a fitting garb of the soldier, the sailor, and the ruler, so too is there a proper attire of the self-controlled man—one that is unfussy, decorous, and clean.
1:2636
Wherefore also the law concerning leprosy laid down in the Law through Moses rejects the variegated and the much-spotted as not holy, resembling the variegated scales of the serpent.
1:2637
It wishes, then, that he who is no longer flowered over with a variety of colours, but wholly whitened throughout, from the top of the head to the very feet, should be clean, so that, by the transition from the body, putting away the variegated and crafty passion of the mind, we may love the unvariegated, undoubting, and simple colour of truth.
1:2638
在這件事上效法摩西的那位——那位至為卓越的柏拉圖——也讚許那種織物,在其上所費的工不超過一個貞潔婦人所宜的程度;
And he too who in this matter is an emulator of Moses—the altogether excellent Plato—approves that weaving in which no more work is bestowed than is fitting for a chaste woman;
1:2639
他在別處也說,無論在其他方面還是在織物上,白色都與莊重相稱;
and elsewhere he says that white colours would be becoming to dignity, both in other respects and in weaving;
1:2640
and that dyes are not to be applied except for the adornments of war.
1:2641
White, then, is suited to men who are peaceable and full of light.
1:2642
As, then, the signs that are nearest to the causes, when present, signify—or rather, demonstrate—the existence of that which produced them (as smoke signifies fire, and good colour and good pulse signify health), so too among us such attire indicates the state of the character.
1:2643
Self-control is clean and simple, since cleanliness is a disposition apt to prepare a way of life that is pure and unmixed with shameful things, while simplicity is a disposition apt to take away superfluities.
1:2644
And firm clothing, especially that which is unfulled, keeps in the heat that is in the body—not because the clothing has heat in itself, but because it turns back the heat going out of the body and gives it no passage, and if any [external cold] should fall upon it, the clothing, catching it up, holds it in itself, and being warmed by it, warms the body in return; wherefore this is to be used especially in winter.
1:2645
And contentment is a disposition free from excess, apt to admit those things that are sufficient for the unfailing supply toward a life lived according to reason—the healthy and blessed life.
1:2646
And let the woman too make use of the plain and dignified garment, but somewhat softer than is fitting for a man, yet not utterly past blushing, nor flowing in softness.
1:2647
And let the garments be suited to age, to person, to place, to nature, to pursuits.
1:2648
For the divine Apostle most excellently counsels us to "put on Christ Jesus, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfil its lusts."
1:2649
And the Word forbids those who do violence to nature to bore through the lobes of their ears.
1:2650
For why not the nose too? So that that saying might also be fulfilled:
1:2651
For, in general, if anyone thinks himself adorned by gold, he is inferior to the gold, and he who is inferior to gold is not its master.
