1:2260
Then is it not absurd that horses and birds and the other animals should spring up from the grass and the meadows and take flight, rejoicing in their proper adornment—the horse's mane, the natural color, the variegated plumage—while woman, as if more deficient even than the nature of beasts, thinks herself so unbeautiful as to need a borrowed, bought-up, painted-on beauty? Hair-nets, and differences of hair-nets, and elaborate braidings, but also the countless arrangements of the hair, and the costly furnishings of mirrors, with which they get themselves up to hunt those who, like foolish children, are infatuated with appearances—these belong to utterly shameless women, whom one would not be wrong to call courtesans, since they make their faces into masks.
1:2261
然而道勸我們不要顧念所見的,乃要顧念所不見的;
But the Word counsels us not to look at the things that are seen, but at the things that are not seen;
1:2262
for the things that are seen are temporary, but the things that are not seen are eternal.
1:2263
她們發明了鏡子——對於這欺騙之物,人本該在其上覆蓋一層帷幕;
They have devised mirrors—the very thing upon which one ought rather to lay a veil over this deception;
1:2264
for it did not turn out well even for the beautiful Narcissus, as the myth of the Greeks has it, to become a spectator of his own image.
1:2265
And if Moses commands men to make no image as a rival craft to God, how could these women reasonably act in counterfeiting their own images by reflection unto the false-making of the face? Moreover, to the prophet Samuel, when he was sent to anoint one of the sons of Jesse as king, and when he saw the eldest of his sons as beautiful and tall, and was about to apply the anointing oil, Samuel being delighted with him, the Lord, it says, said to him:
1:2266
'Do not look upon his appearance or the height of his stature, for I have rejected him.'
1:2267
For 'man looks at the eyes, but the Lord at the heart;' and He did not anoint the one beautiful in body, but the one beautiful in soul.
1:2268
If, then, the natural beauty of the body is reckoned by the Lord as less than that of the soul, what does He think of the counterfeit kind, having utterly cast out all falsehood? For we walk by faith, not by sight.
1:2269
故此,主藉著亞伯拉罕極其明白地教導:凡跟隨神的人都當輕看本鄉、親族、產業與一切財富,因主使他成了寄居的,也正因此稱他為自己的朋友,因為他輕看了家鄉的家業;
Most plainly, then, the Lord teaches through Abraham that the one who follows God should despise homeland and kindred and possessions and all wealth, having made him a sojourner, and for this reason also named him His friend, since he despised his substance at home;
1:2270
for he was of noble birth and exceedingly wealthy.
1:2271
With his own three hundred and eighteen servants, at any rate, he overpowered the four kings who had taken Lot captive.
1:2272
We find Esther alone justly adorned.
1:2273
The woman beautified herself in a mystical way for her own king, but that beauty of hers is found to be a ransom for a people about to be slaughtered.
1:2274
That self-adornment makes women into courtesans, and men into effeminates and adulterers, the tragic poet bears witness for us, narrating somewhat thus:
1:2275
'Coming from among the Phrygians, this judge of the goddesses—as the Argive myth has it—to Lacedaemon, blooming in his robe of garments and glittering with gold, in barbaric luxury, loving and beloved, he carried off Helen to the ox-stalls of Ida, having caught Menelaus away from home.'
1:2276
蠻族愛慕妝飾之心與女氣的奢華傾覆了希臘;
Barbaric love of finery and effeminate luxury overturned Hellas;
1:2277
拉刻代孟的節制被衣飾、嬌柔與正當其時的美貌所毀;
Laconian self-control was destroyed by raiment and daintiness and seasonable beauty;
1:2278
the barbaric loves of finery convicted the daughter of Zeus of being a courtesan.
1:2279
They had no Pedagogue to check their lusts, nor indeed the one who says:
1:2280
'You shall not commit adultery,' nor the one who says 'You shall not covet'—neither shall you make your way into adultery through desire, nor shall you kindle your appetites through love of finery.
1:2281
What an end followed them as a result of these things, and how many evils they reaped, who were unwilling to check their self-love!
1:2282
兩大洲因毫無節制的逸樂而被攪動,萬事都為一個蠻族少年陷入動盪;
Two continents were set in motion by undisciplined pleasures, and all things are thrown into turmoil over a barbaric lad;
1:2283
全希臘登船出航,海洋因承載著整片大陸而變得擁擠;
all Hellas takes to ship, and the sea is straitened, bearing whole continents upon it;
1:2284
一場漫長的戰爭被煽成烈焰,激烈的爭戰爆發開來,平原上堆滿了屍首;
a long war is fanned into flame, and fierce battles burst forth, and the plains are filled with corpses;
1:2285
那蠻族在船塢上肆行暴虐;
the barbarian commits outrage upon the naval station;
1:2286
不義得勢,而那詩人筆下宙斯的眼目卻望向色雷斯人;
injustice prevails, and the eye of that Zeus of the poets looks upon the Thracians;
1:2287
高貴的血被蠻族的平原所吸盡,河流的水也被死人的屍身所阻塞;
noble blood the barbarian plains drink up, and the streams of rivers are dammed with the bodies of the dead;
1:2288
人捶胸哀號,悲傷蔓延全地;
breasts are beaten with lamentations, and mourning spreads over the land;
1:2289
and all the feet of Ida of many fountains are shaken, and her peaks, and the city of the Trojans and the ships of the Achaeans.
1:2290
Where shall we flee, Homer, and stand? Show us a land not shaken.
1:2291
'Do not touch the reins, my child, being inexperienced, nor mount the chariot to drive it, not having learned;'
1:2292
'in two charioteers heaven delights, by whom alone the fire is led and driven.'
1:2293
For the understanding is led astray by pleasure, and the purity of reasoning, when not trained as a child by the Word, slides down into licentiousness, and receives as the wages of its trespass its own downfall.
1:2294
...having abandoned heaven for a withering beauty, and having fallen so great a distance from the heavens down to the ground.
1:2295
示劍人也因背道而受罰,因他們玷辱了那聖潔的處女;
But the Shechemites also are punished for falling away, having outraged the holy virgin;
1:2296
the punishment is a tomb to them, and the memorial of the penalty serves as a Pedagogue unto salvation.
1:2297
To Men Who Beautify Themselves.
1:2298
To such a pitch, then, has luxury driven things, that not only does the female sex sicken over this empty pursuit, but the men also emulate the disease.
1:2299
For not being clean of self-adornment, they are not in health, but inclining to the more effeminate, they play the woman—cropping their hair in ignoble and harlot-like cuts, wrapping themselves in bright mantles, chewing mastic, reeking of perfume.
1:2300
What would one say on seeing these men? Simply, as a physiognomist, one divines them from their bearing to be adulterers and effeminates, hunting after both kinds of love—haters of body-hair, hairless, loathing the manly bloom, but arranging their tresses like the women.
1:2301
'Living in unholy deeds of daring, these shifty ones do reckless and evil works,' says the Sibyl.
1:2302
故此,為著這些男子,城裡滿是那些用瀝青膏、剃刀與拔毛的人,去伺候這些女氣之輩;
On account of these men, then, the cities are full of those who use pitch-plasters, and shave, and pluck the hairs from these effeminates;
1:2303
店鋪四處設立並大開門戶,這妓女般淫業的工匠公然收取大量的銀錢;
workshops are fitted out and stand open everywhere, and craftsmen of this harlot-like fornication openly traffic in abundant money;
1:2304
這些男子把自己交給那些人,任憑被塗瀝青、被以各樣方法拔去毛髮,既不在旁觀者面前羞愧,也不在過路人面前羞愧,甚至連自己身為男子也不覺羞愧;
to whom these men offer themselves to be pitch-plastered and to have their hairs pulled out in every way, ashamed neither before the onlookers nor before the passersby, nor even before themselves, that they are men;
1:2305
for such are the zealots of the more ignoble passions, having their whole body planed smooth by the violent tuggings of the pitch.
1:2306
And they care not at all to go any further into such shamelessness.
1:2307
For if nothing is left undone by them, neither shall anything be left unspoken by me.
1:2308
Diogenes, rebuking one of these ignoble fellows in pedagogic fashion, when the man was being put up for sale, said very manfully: 'Come, lad, buy yourself a man,' chastening that man's harlotry with an ambiguous saying.
1:2309
For how is it not ignoble that men should shave themselves and make themselves smooth? And certain dyeings of the hair, and anointings of grey locks, and yellowings—the practices of utterly abominable effeminates—and their womanish combings-through must be put away.
1:2310
因為他們以為自己像蛇蛻去頭上的老態一樣,藉著重新塗改、把自己弄得年輕,便得以更新;
For they think that, like a serpent shedding the old age of its head, they renew themselves by re-inscribing and making themselves young again;
1:2311
but even if they outwit their hairs, yet they shall not escape the wrinkles, nor shall they elude death by outwitting time.
1:2312
For it is not dreadful—no, not dreadful—for an old man to seem what he is, being unable to escape notice.
1:2313
那麼,人越是趨向他的終點,就論到真理而言越發尊貴,因為惟有神比他更為年長,因祂也是那永恆的長者,是一切存有中最古老的;
The more, then, a man hastens toward his end, the more honorable he is in respect of truth, having God alone as more aged than himself, since He too is the eternal Elder, the most aged of all that exist;
1:2314
prophecy has called Him 'Ancient of Days,' and 'the hair of His head is like pure wool,' says the prophet.
1:2315
'And no one else,' says the Lord, 'is able to make one hair white or black.'
1:2316
那麼,他們怎能與神對立而另立一個創造——或說,這些不敬虔之人怎能勉強自己與祂作對——竟篡改祂所使之變白的頭髮呢?聖經卻說:『老年人的冠冕是豐富的經歷』,又說『他們臉上的白髮乃是豐富經歷的花朵』;
How, then, do they set up a rival creation against God—or rather, how do the godless force themselves to oppose Him—by counterfeiting the hair that He has made grey? 'But a crown of old men is much experience,' says the Scripture, 'and the grey hair of their face is the flower of much experience';
1:2317
but these men dishonor the dignity of age, the grey-haired one.
1:2318
But it is not, no it is not, possible for a man to display a true soul who has a counterfeit head.
1:2319
'But you,' He says, 'did not so learn Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught in Him, as the truth is in Jesus, that you put off, according to your former manner of life, the old man'—not the grey-haired man, but the one corrupted according to the lusts of deceit—
1:2320
'created in righteousness and holiness of the truth.'
1:2321
But for a man to comb himself and to shave himself with a razor for the sake of good looks, and to arrange his hair before a mirror, and to shave and pluck and smooth his cheeks—how is this not womanish? And if one were to see them stripped, he would take them for women.
1:2322
For even if it is not permitted them to wear gold, yet on account of their effeminate desire, wrapping straps and fringes of gold around them in thin plates, or fashioning certain spherical shapes of the same material, they hang them from their ankles and dangle them from their necks.
1:2323
這是那些被拖入閨閣中、頹廢敗壞之人的伎倆——是水陸兩棲、淫蕩的野獸;
This is the artifice of broken-down men dragged off into the women's quarters—amphibious and lecherous beasts;
1:2324
the manner of this ambush is harlot-like and godless.
1:2325
因為神願意婦人是光滑的,惟獨以她天然的頭髮為榮,好像馬以鬃毛為榮一般;至於男子,神卻像給獅子一樣賜他鬍鬚,又以多毛的胸膛使他顯為男子;
For God willed the woman to be smooth, priding herself on her natural hair alone, like a horse on its mane; but the man He adorned, like the lions, with a beard, and made him manly with hairy breasts;
1:2326
this is a token of strength and of rule.
1:2327
In this way too He beautified the cocks, those champions among birds, with combs as with helmets.
1:2328
And so highly does God esteem these hairs that He commands them to come to men together with wisdom, and indeed, admiring the dignity, has honored the awesomeness of the sight with venerable grey hair.
1:2329
Wisdom and exact reasonings, the grey hairs, come to their full flower together with understanding through time, and they strengthen old age with the firmness of much experience, holding forth grey hair as a lovely flower of grave wisdom, an inducement to reasonable faith.
1:2330
這便是男子的徽記——就是鬍鬚,男子藉它被顯明——它比夏娃更古老,又是那較強之性的象徵;
This, then, is man's badge—the beard, by which the man is made manifest—is older than Eve, and a symbol of the stronger nature;
1:2331
to this God judged the hairy quality to be fitting, and scattered the hairs over the whole body of the man, but as for whatever was smooth and soft in him, He took it from the rib, fashioning the soft-to-the-touch Eve for the reception of seed, a woman who is a helper for procreation and housekeeping.
1:2332
至於男子——既已捨去那光滑的部分——便仍作男子,並彰顯出男子的特質;
But the man—since he gave up the smooth part—remained a man and displays the man;
1:2333
and to him acting has been granted, as to her, being acted upon.
1:2334
For the hairy parts are by nature drier and warmer than the smooth.
1:2335
Wherefore the male sex is hairier and warmer than the female, and the uncastrated than the castrated, and the mature than the immature.
1:2336
故此,違犯那男子本性的象徵——就是多毛——乃是不虔的;
To transgress, then, against the symbol of the manly nature—the hairiness—is unholy;
1:2337
至於那把自己弄光滑的妝飾——因我為道而激動——若是為要招引男子,便是孌童的記號;若是為要招引婦女,便是姦夫的記號;
but the adornment of smoothing—for I grow heated by the Word—is, if it be directed at men, the mark of a catamite; if at women, the mark of an adulterer;
1:2338
and both must be banished as far as possible from our commonwealth.
1:2339
主說:『就是你們的頭髮,也都被數過了』;
'But even the hairs of your head are all numbered,' says the Lord;
1:2340
and numbered too are those upon the chin, and indeed those over the whole body.
1:2341
故此,斷不可違背神的旨意拔去任何已被數入祂心意中的;
By no means, then, must anything be plucked out contrary to God's purpose, which has been numbered into His will;
1:2342
'Unless you do not recognize yourselves,' says the Apostle, 'that Christ Jesus is in you;' and if we knew Him to be dwelling within, I do not know how we should have dared to maltreat Him.
1:2343
And to be depilated with pitch—I shrink even from speaking of the indecency of the act—turning themselves backward and stooping, and exposing to plain view the secret parts of nature, dancing it out and bending themselves over in shameless postures while not blushing for themselves, even in the very midst of the youths' company and the gymnasium, where men's virtue is put to the test, behaving indecently, pursuing this practice contrary to nature—how is this not the utmost licentiousness? For those who do such things in the open would scarcely feel shame even at home before anyone.
1:2344
他們在公眾場合的無恥,正見證了他們在隱密處肆無忌憚的放縱;
Their shamelessness in public bears witness against their unchecked wantonness in secret;
1:2345
for he who by day denies that he is a man is plainly convicted by night of being a woman.
1:2346
'There shall not be,' the Word said through Moses, 'a harlot from among the daughters of Israel, nor shall there be a fornicator from among the sons of Israel.'
1:2347
'But pitch is useful,' someone says.
1:2348
Yet no one in his right mind would wish to seem a fornicator when he is not diseased, nor would anyone willingly take pains to slander the fair image.
1:2349
因為那照神旨意蒙召的人,神既預先知道他們要模成祂兒子的形像——按蒙福使徒所說,神為他們的緣故,命定祂在許多弟兄中作長子——那麼那些苦待那模成主形像之身體的人,豈不是不敬虔的嗎?凡願作美好之人的男子,當妝飾人裡面最尊貴的——就是心思,使它一天比一天顯為更美;
For if those called according to purpose God foreknew to be conformed to the image of His Son, on whose account, according to the blessed Apostle, He ordained that He should be the firstborn among many brethren, how are not those who maltreat the body that is conformed to the Lord godless? But for a man who wishes to be beautiful, the noblest thing in a human being—the mind—must be adorned, which is to be displayed more comely day by day;
1:2350
but it is the lusts, not the hairs, that must be plucked out.
1:2351
I pity even the slave-boys of the slave-dealers, decked out for outrage; yet these have not been maltreated by themselves, but the wretches are beautified at command for the sake of shameful gain.
1:2352
然而那些甘心情願選擇行這些事的人——這些事他們若被命令去做,倘若還算是男人,本會寧死不從——他們豈不可鄙嗎?如今生活竟被逼到這等放蕩的地步,不義橫行,一切淫穢傾倒在各城之上,竟成了常規;
But those who of their own will choose to do these things—which, if commanded, they would have valued at the price of death, had they been men—how are they not contemptible? And now to such a pitch of licentiousness has life been driven, while injustice runs riot, and all lewdness is poured out upon the cities, having become law;
1:2353
on the rooftops among them stand women selling their own flesh for the outrage of pleasure, and boys taught to deny their nature pretend to be women.
1:2354
奢華把一切都顛倒挪移了;
Luxury has displaced everything;
1:2355
那嬌奢生活的好事多管使人類蒙羞;
the meddlesomeness of soft living has put humanity to shame;
1:2356
it seeks everything, attempts everything, forces everything, confounds nature: men have suffered the things of women, and women play the man, being given in marriage and taking wives contrary to nature.
1:2357
對放蕩而言,沒有不可通行的關口;
No passage is impassable to licentiousness;
1:2358
among them love is made common property, and luxury sits at their common table.
1:2359
O the pitiable spectacle! O the unspeakable practice!
1:2360
These are shown to be the trophies of your civic incontinence—the proofs of the deeds, those women who lie in the gutters.
1:2361
But the wretches do not even understand that the uncertainty of such intercourse works out many tragedies.
1:2362
Fathers, forgetting the children they exposed, often unknowingly lie with a son who has turned prostitute and with daughters who have become wanton; and the license of incontinence shows those who begot them to be their own paramours.
1:2363
這些事,那些自命聰明的立法者竟予以容許;
These things the wise among the lawgivers permit;
1:2364
it is permitted them to sin according to law, and the secrecy of pleasure they call 'easygoingness.'
1:2365
那些違背本性行姦淫的人,以為自己逃脫了姦淫,然而公義卻緊隨他們,作他們妄為之事的報應者;
Those who commit adultery against nature suppose they have escaped adultery, but Justice follows them as the avenger of their reckless deeds;
1:2366
and drawing down upon themselves an inexorable calamity, they purchase death for a little coin.
1:2367
這些可憐人是這等貨物的商販,四處航行,把淫亂當作貨物運載,如同運糧、運酒一般;
Merchants of these wares, the wretches sail about, carrying fornication as their freight, like grain, like wine;
1:2368
but others, far more miserable, buy pleasures like bread, like a relish, not having taken to heart that saying of Moses:
1:2369
'You shall not profane your daughter by making her a harlot, and the land shall not commit fornication, and the land shall be filled with iniquity.'
1:2370
這些事是古時所預言的,如今其結局已是顯而易見;
These things were prophesied of old, and the outcome is manifest;
1:2371
the whole earth is now already filled both with fornication and with lawlessness.
1:2372
我欽佩古時羅馬的立法者;
I admire the ancient lawgivers of the Romans;
1:2373
these men hated the effeminate practice, and judged the bodily union with the male, contrary to the law of nature, to be worthy of the pit, according to the law of righteousness.
1:2374
For it is not lawful ever to pluck out the beard, the connatural beauty, the noble beauty first appearing on the youth whose bloom is most graceful.
1:2375
And advancing in age, he is now anointed, rejoicing in his beard, upon which descended the prophetic ointment of the honored Aaron.
1:2376
And the one rightly trained, upon whom peace has come to dwell, ought to bring peace even to his own hairs.
1:2377
那麼,那些一意淫蕩的婦女既見男子行這等事,又把他們當作鏡子來照看,還有甚麼她們想不出來的呢?倒不如說,這些不該稱為男子,乃該稱為孌童與娘娘腔之輩,他們連聲音都已軟糜,衣裳在觸感與染色上也都女氣十足;
What, then, would women bent on lewdness not contrive, when they see such things done by men, looking at them as in a mirror? Rather, one ought not to call these men, but cinaedi and womanish creatures, whose very voices are broken and whose raiment is effeminate in touch and in dye;
1:2378
這等人在品格上被外在揭穿,藉著他們的披風、鞋履、體態、步姿、髮型與眼神;
such men are convicted in their character from without, by their cloak, their footwear, their figure, their gait, their haircut, their glance;
1:2379
聖經說:『人從眼神就被認出』,又說『人從接人待物的態度也被認出』;
'for a man shall be known by his look,' the Scripture says, 'and a man shall be recognized from the way he meets one';
1:2380
'a man's clothing, the step of his foot, and the laughter of his teeth declare the things concerning him.'
1:2381
For those men who are most of all at war with their other hairs tend only the hair upon the head, all but binding up their tresses in hair-nets like the women.
1:2382
Lions, then, glory in their shagginess, but for strength they arm themselves with their hair; and boars too pride themselves on their bristly ridge, yet hunters dread them when their hair bristles up; and woolly-fleeced sheep are weighed down with their fleeces, yet for these too the loving Father has multiplied their hair for your service, O man, having taught you to shear the fleeces.
1:2383
在列邦中,凱爾特人與西古提人都蓄長髮,卻不刻意妝飾;
And among the nations the Celts and the Scythians wear their hair long, but they do not primp it;
1:2384
那蠻族的一頭美髮帶著幾分可畏,那赤褐之色預示著戰爭;
there is something fearsome about the barbarian's fine head of hair, and its tawny color threatens war;
1:2385
the color is somehow akin to blood.
1:2386
這兩個蠻族都憎惡奢華;
Both these barbarian peoples have hated luxury;
1:2387
they will set forth clear witnesses to their simple way of life—the German, the Scythian his wagon.
1:2388
西古提人有時甚至不把篷車放在眼裡——它的大小在蠻族看來便算是財富——他撇下奢華,過著儉樸的生活;
And sometimes even the Scythian thinks little of the wagon—its size seems wealth to the barbarian—and forsaking luxury he lives a frugal civic life;
1:2389
西古提人取一匹馬作為自足的家、比篷車更輕便的——他騎上去,便被載往任何他想去的地方;
a self-sufficient home, more lightly-girt than the wagon—the horse—the Scythian man takes, and mounting it he is carried wherever he wishes;
1:2390
and when worn down by hunger, he asks the horse for food, and it offers its veins, and supplies to its master the blood, the only thing it possesses; and to the nomad the horse becomes both vehicle and food.
1:2391
至於亞拉伯人——這是另一個游牧民族——其壯丁都是騎駱駝的;
And of the Arabians—these are another nomadic people—the men of fighting age are camel-riders;
1:2392
這些人騎著懷胎的母駱駝;
these men ride the pregnant camels;
1:2393
and the camels graze and run at the same time, bearing up their masters, and carry their household along with them.
1:2394
And if drink should fail the barbarians, they milk the camels; and when the supply of food is already exhausted, they do not even spare the blood, just as they say the wolves do in their frenzy.
1:2395
But these camels, gentler than the barbarians, bear no grudge though wronged, but even race across the desert with good courage, both carrying and nourishing their masters at once.
1:2396
願那些以血為食的兇猛野獸都滅亡罷;
Perish, then, the savage beasts of prey, whose food is blood;
1:2397
for it is not lawful for human beings even to touch blood, whose body is nothing but flesh tilled by blood.
1:2398
Human blood has partaken of the Word, and shares in grace through the Spirit; and if anyone wrongs it, he will not go unnoticed.
1:2399
It is permitted to him to speak to the Lord even stripped of outward show.
1:2400
And I accept the simplicity of the barbarians.
1:2401
Loving a frugal way of life, the barbarians abandoned luxury.
1:2402
Such are we whom the Lord calls—stripped of vulgar ostentation, stripped of vainglory, drawn away from sins, carrying only the wood of life, holding fast to salvation alone.
1:2403
But unawares I have sailed past, in spirit, the sequence of my argument, to which I must now run back again, and rebuke the multitude of servants kept by the wealthy.
1:2404
For shunning work and service done with their own hands, they take refuge in attendants, buying up a great crowd of cooks, table-servants, and those who skilfully carve the meats into portions.
1:2405
Their service is divided among them in manifold ways:
1:2406
some labour over their gluttony—carvers, sauce-makers, makers of pastries, of honey-cakes, of broths, both preparers and creators of dishes; others busy themselves about superfluous clothing; some guard gold like griffins; others keep the silver, polish the goblets, and arrange the preparations for the banquets; others curry the beasts of burden; and a throng of cup-bearers is trained among them, and herds of beautiful youths like cattle, from whom their beauty is milked.
1:2407
Attending the women, some hold the mirrors, others the hair-nets, others the combs; and many eunuchs, who are themselves go-betweens, serving without suspicion those who wish to indulge in pleasures unhindered, by reason of the trustworthiness of their inability to feel sexual desire.
1:2408
But a true eunuch is not one who cannot indulge in pleasure, but one who does not wish to.
1:2409
And so the Word, testifying through the prophet Samuel against the transgressors among the Jews, when the people asked for a king, does not promise them a humane lord, but threatens them with a certain self-willed and luxurious tyrant, who, He says, will take your daughters to be perfumers, cooks, and bakers—prevailing by the law of war, not zealous for a peaceful administration.
1:2410
And many Celts are those who lift up the women's litters on high and carry them about.
1:2411
But spinners, wool-workers, weavers at the loom, the industrious women's quarters, and the keeping of the home are nowhere to be found; instead, those who falsely make up the women spend whole days with them, prattling amorous tales and wasting away both their bodies and souls with idle work and idle talk.
1:2412
"You shall not be with the many in evildoing," it says, "nor shall you side with the multitude"; for wisdom is seen among the few, but disorder among the multitude.
1:2413
These women buy themselves litter-bearers not out of modesty—because they do not wish to be stared at (for it would be desirable if they were prompted to seek concealment by such a disposition)—but out of self-indulgence, riding upon their servants, eager to make a grand display.
1:2414
For with the curtain thrown open, glancing about more keenly at those who look at them, they expose their character; and often they even lean out, shaming their superficial dignity by their slippery officiousness.
1:2415
"Do not look about," it says, "in the streets of the city, nor wander in its desolate places"; for it is truly a wilderness, even if there be a crowd of the dissolute, wherever there is no self-controlled person present.
1:2416
These women parade around the temples, sacrificing and seeking oracles, daily forming processions with begging priests, mendicant priests of the Mother of the gods, and old buffoon-women who ruin households; and they endure the old wives' whisperings over the wine-cups, learning from the sorcerers certain love-charms and incantations for the ruin of marriages.
1:2417
And some of the men they already have, others they pray for, and yet others the diviners promise them.
1:2418
They do not realise, being deceived, that they themselves are giving themselves up as vessels of pleasure to those who wish to be lustful; and exchanging their own purity for the most shameful outrage, they regard their disgraceful corruption as a means of profit.
1:2419
妓女淫蕩的幫手為數眾多,從四面八方鑽了進來;
Many are the ministers of harlots' debauchery, slipping in from every quarter;
1:2420
for the dissolute are prone to wantonness, like the swine that rush headlong into the part of the boat that is sinking.
1:2421
Wherefore most forcefully Scripture admonishes:
1:2422
"Do not bring every man into your house, for many are the snares of the crafty."
1:2423
And elsewhere it says: "Let righteous men be your fellow-diners, and let your boasting be in the fear of the Lord."
1:2424
"For you know this well," says the Apostle, "that no fornicator, or unclean person, or covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God."
1:2425
But some women delight in the company of effeminate men, and crowds of foul-mouthed catamites flow in among them—polluted in body, polluted in speech, made manly for unchaste services, ministers of adultery, giggling and whispering and shamelessly producing through their nostrils that lewd snuffling—the prelude of fornication—trying with unchaste words and gestures to give pleasure, and provoking to laughter.
1:2426
And there are times when, inflamed by some chance anger, being themselves either fornicators or having zealously gathered a crowd of catamites for destruction, they snort through the nose like frogs, as though they had gall dwelling in their nostrils.
1:2427
They rear Median dogs and recline together with peak-headed dwarfs, taking delight in monstrous dancers.
1:2428
And hearing of Thersites they laugh, yet they themselves buy at a high price these Thersiteses, and boast not of yoke-mate husbands, but of those who are indeed a burden to the earth.
1:2429
她們輕看一位自守的寡婦——她遠勝過一隻馬爾他小狗——又無視一位公義的老者——我想,他比一個用銀子買來的怪人更俊美;
And they overlook a chaste widow, who far surpasses a Maltese lapdog, and pass by a righteous old man, who, I think, is more comely than a bought-with-silver freak;
1:2430
那些飼養鸚鵡和鴴鳥的婦女,連一個孤兒都不肯收養,反倒把自己家中所懷的嬰孩拋棄,卻收養雛鳥;
and those women who rear parrots and plovers do not even take in an orphan child, but they expose the babies conceived in their own homes, while they take up the chicks of birds;
1:2431
and they have preferred irrational creatures to rational beings, although they ought rather to nurture old men who profess self-control and who are, I think, more comely than apes and able to utter something better than nightingales.
1:2432
"Inasmuch as you did it to one of these least," He says, "you did it to Me."
1:2433
然而這些婦女恰恰相反,她們寧取無知而棄自守,把自己的家產化成珍珠和印度的綠寶石;
But these women, on the contrary, have preferred ignorance to self-control, turning their own substance to stone in pearls and Indian emeralds;
1:2434
yes, and on fading dyes and slaves bought with silver they squander and fling away their money, like glutted birds scratching about in the dung-heap of life.
1:2435
"Poverty humbles a man," it says;
1:2436
by poverty it means stinginess, by which the rich are poor in giving, as though they had nothing.
1:2437
How one ought to conduct oneself at the baths.
1:2438
What kind of baths, too, they have!
1:2439
人工搭建的小室,結構緊密又可搬運,覆以透明的細麻布;鍍金的椅子鑲嵌著銀飾;還有數不清的金銀器皿,有的拿來祝酒,有的盛食物,有的供沐浴之用;
Artificial chambers, compactly built and portable, covered with translucent linen; gilded chairs studded with silver; and countless vessels of gold and silver, some carried about for toasts, some for food, some for bathing;
1:2440
yes, and even little braziers of coals.
1:2441
因為她們已放縱到如此地步,竟在沐浴之中仍進食酗酒;
For they have come to such a pitch of intemperance that they dine and get drunk while still bathing;
1:2442
她們又毫無品味地把那些用來炫耀的銀器陳列在浴堂裡;
and the silver vessels with which they show off they tastelessly set out in the bath-houses;
1:2443
也許這的確是出於過度的炫耀而要顯擺財富,但最主要的是出於她們任性的毫無品味;她們藉此指責丈夫是被女人轄制的軟弱男子,卻又以某種方式證明連自己若沒有大批器皿,都無法在場、無法出汗;
perhaps indeed to display their wealth out of excessive ostentation, but most of all their wilful want of taste, by which they accuse husbands of being unmanly men mastered by women, while they prove in some way or other that they themselves are not able even to be present and able to sweat without a multitude of vessels;
1:2444
for indeed the poor women, though they have no share in the pomp, partake of the same baths.
1:2445
The filth of superfluity, then, carries with it a great cloak of blasphemy.
1:2446
她們用這個作餌,釣那些對著金子的閃光張口流涎的可憐人;
With this, as with a bait, they hook the wretched men who gape at the glitter of the gold;
1:2447
for indeed, dazzling the tasteless with this, they contrive to make their lovers admire them—lovers who soon afterwards outrage them when naked.
1:2448
誠然,對自己的丈夫她們不肯寬衣,假裝出一副羞怯可信的樣子;然而那些藏在家中的婦女,卻任憑外人隨意在浴場中觀看她們赤身;
And indeed, to their own husbands they would not strip, courting a pretended trustworthiness of shame; but it is permitted to any who wish, among others, to behold the home-kept women naked in the baths;
1:2449
for there they are not ashamed to strip before spectators, as before hucksters of bodies.
1:2450
But Hesiod advises a man not even to cleanse his skin with water that a woman has used.
1:2451
浴場竟對男女一同公開敞開,他們便在那裡寬衣,趨向放縱;
The baths are thrown open in common to men and women together, and thence they strip themselves for intemperance;
1:2452
for from gazing comes the desire that springs up in men, as though their sense of shame were washed away from them at the baths.
