17:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ μεγάλαι γάρ σου αἱ κρίσεις καὶ δυσδιήγητοι διὰ τοῦτο ἀπαίδευτοι ψυχαὶ ἐπλανήθησαν
Magna sunt enim judicia tua , Domine , et inenarrabilia verba tua : propter hoc indisciplinatæ animæ erraverunt .
እስመ ፡ ዓቢይ ፡ ኵነኔከ ፡ ወዕፁብ ፡ ለተናግሮ ፡ በእንተዝ ፡ ስሕቱ ፡ ነፍሳት ፡ እለ ፡ አልቦሙ ፡ ትምህርተ ፡ ፈጣሪ ።
For great are your judgements, and hard to interpret; Therefore souls undisciplined went astray.
17:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὑπειληφότες γὰρ καταδυναστεύειν ἔθνος ἅγιον ἄνομοι δέσμιοι σκότους καὶ μακρᾶς πεδῆται νυκτὸς κατακλεισθέντες ὀρόφοις φυγάδες τῆς αἰωνίου προνοίας ἔκειντο
Dum enim persuasum habent iniqui posse dominari nationi sanctæ , vinculis tenebrarum et longæ noctis compediti , inclusi sub tectis , fugitivi perpetuæ providentiæ jacuerunt .
እስመ ፡ ኃጥአን ፡ አመ ፡ ነሥኡ ፡ ሕዝቦ ፡ ቅድሰ ፡ ወተኃየሉ ፡ ላዕሌሆሙ ፡ ወኃያላን ፡ ተአስሩ ፡ በጽልመተ ፡ ሌሊት ፡ ነዋኅ ፡ አሜሃ ፡ ተሞቅሑ ፡ መትሕተ ፡ ተድባበ ፡ ቤት ።
For when lawless men had supposed that they held a holy nation in their power, They, themselves, prisoners of darkness, and bound in the fetters of a long night, Close kept beneath their roofs, Lay exiled from the eternal providence.
17:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ λανθάνειν γὰρ νομίζοντες ἐπὶ κρυφαίοις ἁμαρτήμασιν ἀφεγγεῖ λήθης παρακαλύμματι ἐσκορπίσθησαν θαμβούμενοι δεινῶς καὶ ἰνδάλμασιν ἐκταρασσόμενοι
Et dum putant se latere in obscuris peccatis , tenebroso oblivionis velamento dispersi sunt , paventes horrende , et cum admiratione nimia perturbati .
ወተረክቡ ፡ ጊጉያን ፡ እምሥርዓተ ፡ መልእክት ፡ ዘለዓለም ፡ ሐሊዮሙ ፡ ዘአበሱ ፡ ቦቱ ።
For while they thought that they were unseen in their secret sins, They were sundered one from another by a dark curtain of forgetfulness, Stricken with terrible awe, and sore troubled by spectral forms.
17:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ οὐδὲ γὰρ ὁ κατέχων αὐτοὺς μυχὸς ἀφόβους διεφύλαττεν ἦχοι δ’ ἐκταράσσοντες αὐτοὺς περιεκόμπουν καὶ φάσματα ἀμειδήτοις κατηφῆ προσώποις ἐνεφανίζετο
Neque enim quæ continebat illos spelunca sine timore custodiebat , quoniam sonitus descendens perturbabat illos , et personæ tristes illis apparentes pavorem illis præstabant .
ውስተ ፡ አብያት ፡ ዘአልቦ ፡ ውስቴቱ ፡ ብርሃን ፡ ይትኃባእ ፡ በምሥዋር ፡ ወይትረሳዕ ፡ ወተዘርዉ ፡ ወተመስዉ ፡ እምድንጋፄ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይዴመሙ ፡ ጥቀ ፡ ወተሀውኩ ፡ በምትሐት ።
For neither did the dark recesses that held them guard them from fears, But sounds rushing down rang around them, And phantoms appeared, cheerless with unsmiling faces.
17:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ πυρὸς μὲν οὐδεμία βία κατίσχυεν φωτίζειν οὔτε ἄστρων ἔκλαμπροι φλόγες καταυγάζειν ὑπέμενον τὴν στυγνὴν ἐκείνην νύκτα
Et ignis quidem nulla vis poterat illis lumen præbere , nec siderum limpidæ flammæ illuminare poterant illam noctem horrendam .
እስመ ፡ ዘማዊ ፡ ዘአኀዞሙ ፡ ኢከሀለ ፡ ይዕቀቦሙ ፡ ዘእንበለ ፡ ድንጋፄ ፡ ወድምፀ ፡ ቃል ፡ ልዑል ፡ ያንሶጥጥ ፡ ንባቡ ፡ ኮነ ፡ የሀውኮሙ ።
And no force of fire prevailed to give them light, Neither were the brightest flames of the stars strong enough to illumine that gloomy night:
17:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ διεφαίνετο δ’ αὐτοῖς μόνον αὐτομάτη πυρὰ φόβου πλήρης ἐκδειματούμενοι δὲ τῆς μὴ θεωρουμένης ἐκείνης ὄψεως ἡγοῦντο χείρω τὰ βλεπόμενα
Apparebat autem illis subitaneus ignis , timore plenus ; et timore perculsi illius quæ non videbatur faciei , æstimabant deteriora esse quæ videbantur .
ወራእየ ፡ ምምትሐተ ፡ ጸዋግ ፡ አጥፍአ ፡ ኵሎ ፡ ዘገጹ ፡ ትኩዝ ።
But only there appeared to them the glimmering of a fire self-kindled, full of fear; And in terror they deemed the things which they saw To be worse than that sight, on which they could not gaze.
17:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ μαγικῆς δὲ ἐμπαίγματα κατέκειτο τέχνης καὶ τῆς ἐπὶ φρονήσει ἀλαζονείας ἔλεγχος ἐφύβριστος
Et magicæ artis appositi erant derisus , et sapientiæ gloriæ correptio cum contumelia .
ወብርሃነ ፡ እሳትኒ ፡ ኢክሀለ ፡ ያብርህ ፡ ወኢአሐተ ፡ ጊዜ ፡ ወኢፀዳለ ፡ ከዋክብት ፡ ብሩሃን ፡ ዘቆሙ ፡ ለሥርዓተ ፡ እንታክቲ ፡ ጽልመተ ፡ ሌሊት ።
And they lay helpless, made the sport of magic are, And a shameful rebuke of their vaunts of understanding:
17:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ οἱ γὰρ ὑπισχνούμενοι δείματα καὶ ταραχὰς ἀπελαύνειν ψυχῆς νοσούσης οὗτοι καταγέλαστον εὐλάβειαν ἐνόσουν
Illi enim qui promittebant timores et perturbationes expellere se ab anima languente , hi cum derisu pleni timore languebant .
ወባሕቱ ፡ አስተርአየ ፡ ሎሙ ፡ ግብተ ፡ እሳት ፡ ባሕቲቱ ፡ ዘፍጹም ፡ ግርማኑ ፡ እምዝንቱ ፡ ገጽ ፡ ዘያስተርኢ ፡ ዘየአኪ ፡ እምገጻት ፡ እለ ፡ ያስተርእዩ ፡ አመ ፡ ረሰዩ ፡ ፃማ ፡ ዕበድ ፡ ዘግብረ ፡ ሥራይ ።
For those who promised to drive away terrors and troublings from a sick soul, These were themselves sick with a ludicrous fearfulness:
17:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ γὰρ εἰ μηδὲν αὐτοὺς ταραχῶδες ἐφόβει κνωδάλων παρόδοις καὶ ἑρπετῶν συριγμοῖς ἐκσεσοβημένοι διώλλυντο ἔντρομοι καὶ τὸν μηδαμόθεν φευκτὸν ἀέρα προσιδεῖν ἀρνούμενοι
Nam etsi nihil illos ex monstris perturbabat , transitu animalium et serpentium sibilatione commoti , tremebundi peribant , et aërem quem nulla ratione quis effugere posset , negantes se videre .
ዘወርቅ ፡ ወዘብሩር ፡ ትዕቢት ፡ ለዝላፉ ፡ በእለ ፡ ይፄእሉ ።
For even if no troublous thing affrighted them, Yet, scared with the creepings of vermin and hissings of serpents,
17:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ δειλὸν γὰρ ἰδίῳ πονηρία μάρτυρι καταδικαζομένη ἀεὶ δὲ προσείληφεν τὰ χαλεπὰ συνεχομένη τῇ συνειδήσει
Cum sit enim timida nequitia , dat testimonium condemnationis : semper enim præsumit sæva , perturbata conscientia :
እስመ ፡ እለ ፡ አሰፈዉ ፡ ከመ ፡ ይስድዱ ፡ ሁከታ ፡ ለነፍስ ፡ ድውይት ፡ ወድንጋፄሃ ፡ አድወዮሙ ፡ ለእሉ ፡ ፍርሃት ፡ ዘሰሐቅ ፡ እመሰ ፡ ኢያፍርሆሙ ፡ ምንትኒ ፡ ዘየሀውክ ።
they perished for very trembling, Refusing even to look on the air, which could on no side be escaped.
17:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ οὐθὲν γάρ ἐστιν φόβος εἰ μὴ προδοσία τῶν ἀπὸ λογισμοῦ βοηθημάτων
nihil enim est timor nisi proditio cogitationis auxiliorum .
ነሶሳወ ፡ ተሐዋስያን ፡ ዘይሠርር ፡ ወንኡስ ፡ እምእለ ፡ ይትሐወሱ ፡ ሰደዶሙ ፡ ወአንፈዖሙ ፡ ድንጉፃነ ።
For wickedness, condemned by a witness within, is a coward thing, And, being pressed hard by conscience, always forecasts the worst lot:
17:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἔνδοθεν δὲ οὖσα ἥττων ἡ προσδοκία πλείονα λογίζεται τὴν ἄγνοιαν τῆς παρεχούσης τὴν βάσανον αἰτίας
Et dum ab intus minor est exspectatio , majorem computat inscientiam ejus causæ , de qua tormentum præstat .
ወኢተክህሎሙ ፡ በርእየተ ፡ ነፋስ ፡ ዘይጐይይ ፡ እምነ ፡ ኵሉ ፡ ገጻተ ።
For fear is nothing else but a surrender of the help which reason offers;
17:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ οἱ δὲ τὴν ἀδύνατον ὄντως νύκτα καὶ ἐξ ἀδυνάτου ᾅδου μυχῶν ἐπελθοῦσαν τὸν αὐτὸν ὕπνον κοιμώμενοι
Illi autem qui impotentem vere noctem , et ab infimis et ab altissimis inferis supervenientem , eumdem somnum dormientes ,
እስመ ፡ ምግባሩ ፡ ለእኩይ ፡ ዓመፃ ፡ እንተ ፡ ይከውኑ ፡ ቦቱ ፡ ስምዐ ፡ ወይፈትሑ ፡ ላዕሌሁ ፡ ወዘልፈ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ይትዌከፍ ።
And from within the heart the expectation of them being less Maketh of greater account the ignorance of the cause that brings the torment.
17:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ τὰ μὲν τέρασιν ἠλαύνοντο φαντασμάτων τὰ δὲ τῆς ψυχῆς παρελύοντο προδοσίᾳ αἰφνίδιος γὰρ αὐτοῖς καὶ ἀπροσδόκητος φόβος ἐπεχύθη
aliquando monstrorum exagitabantur timore , aliquando animæ deficiebant traductione : subitaneus enim illis et insperatus timor supervenerat .
ወይገብር ፡ ግብረ ፡ ዘዑግ ፡ ወጠዋይ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይትዓወቆ ፡ ወይኔጽር ፡ በሕሊና ፡ አእምሮ ።
But they, all through the night which was powerless indeed, And which came upon them out of the recesses of powerless Hades, All sleeping the same sleep,
17:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἶθ’ οὕτως ὃς δή ποτ’ οὖν ἦν ἐκεῖ καταπίπτων ἐφρουρεῖτο εἰς τὴν ἀσίδηρον εἱρκτὴν κατακλεισθείς
Deinde si quisquam ex illis decidisset , custodiebatur in carcere sine ferro reclusus .
እስመ ፡ አኮ ፡ ምንትኒ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ግርማ ፡ ፍርሃት ፡ አላ ፡ ያስተሴፉ ፡ ትሕዝብተ ፡ ኵነኔ ፡ በሕሊና ።
Now were haunted by monstrous apparitions, And now were paralysed by their soul’s surrendering; For fear sudden and unlooked for came upon them.
17:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἴ τε γὰρ γεωργὸς ἦν τις ἢ ποιμὴν ἢ τῶν κατ’ ἐρημίαν ἐργάτης μόχθων προλημφθεὶς τὴν δυσάλυκτον ἔμενεν ἀνάγκην μιᾷ γὰρ ἁλύσει σκότους πάντες ἐδέθησαν
Si enim rusticus quis erat , aut pastor , aut agri laborum operarius præoccupatus esset , ineffugibilem sustinebat necessitatem ;
ወእመሰ ፡ ተሰፍዎ ፡ ትሕዝብት ፡ ዘውስጥ ፡ ኅዳጥ ፡ ወኅፁፅ ፡ ፈድፋደ ፡ ትትሔለይ ፡ በኢያእምሮ ፡ ወዕበድ ፡ እንተ ፡ ትሁብ ፡ ፍኖተ ፡ ለኵነኔ ።
So then every man, whoever it might be, sinking down in his place, Was kept in ward shut up in that prison which was barred not with iron:
17:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἴ τε πνεῦμα συρίζον ἢ περὶ ἀμφιλαφεῖς κλάδους ὀρνέων ἦχος εὐμελὴς ἢ ῥυθμὸς ὕδατος πορευομένου βίᾳ ἢ κτύπος ἀπηνὴς καταρριπτομένων πετρῶν
una enim catena tenebrarum omnes erant colligati . Sive spiritus sibilans , aut inter spissos arborum ramos avium sonus suavis , aut vis aquæ decurrentis nimium ,
ወለእልክቱኒ ፡ ሶበ ፡ ከደነቶሙ ፡ እንታክቲ ፡ ሌሊት ፡ እንተ ፡ ኢይትከሀል ፡ ፀዊሮታ ፡ እሙነ ፡ እንተ ፡ ዓርገት ፡ እማዕምቅተ ፡ ፃዕረ ፡ ሲኦል ፡ ዘኢይትከሀል ፡ ፀዊሮታ ፡ ሀለዉ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይነውሙ ፡ ኪያሃ ፡ ዕለተ ።
For whether he were a husbandman, or a shepherd, Or a labourer whose toils were in the wilderness, He was overtaken, and endured that inevitable necessity, For with one chain of darkness were they all bound.
17:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἢ σκιρτώντων ζῴων δρόμος ἀθεώρητος ἢ ὠρυομένων ἀπηνεστάτων θηρίων φωνὴ ἢ ἀντανακλωμένη ἐκ κοιλότητος ὀρέων ἠχώ παρέλυεν αὐτοὺς ἐκφοβοῦντα
aut sonus validus præcipitatarum petrarum , aut ludentium animalium cursus invisus , aut mugientium valida bestiarum vox , aut resonans de altissimis montibus echo : deficientes faciebant illos præ timore .
እስመ ፡ አደንገፅዎሙ ፡ መደንግፃን ፡ በዘይሰድድዎሙ ፡ በአርእዮ ፡ ምትሐት ፡ ወበዘያደክም ፡ ተስፋሃ ፡ ለነፍስ ፡ ወግብተ ፡ በጽሖሙ ፡ ድንጋፄ ፡ ወፍርሃት ፡ ዘኢተሰፈውዎ ፡ ወኢተሐዘብዎ ።
Whether there were a whistling wind, Or a melodious noise of birds among the spreading branches, Or a measured fall of water running violently,
17:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὅλος γὰρ ὁ κόσμος λαμπρῷ κατελάμπετο φωτὶ καὶ ἀνεμποδίστοις συνείχετο ἔργοις
Omnis enim orbis terrarum limpido illuminabatur lumine , et non impeditis operibus continebatur .
ወከመዝ ፡ ኵሉ ፡ ዘሀሎ ፡ ህየ ፡ መኑሂ ፡ ዘኮነ ፡ እመኒ ፡ ዘወድቀ ፡ ወእመኒ ፡ ዘይትዓቀብ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ቤተ ፡ ሞቅሕ ፡ ተሞቂሖ ፡ በሐፂን ፡ ወዘእንበለ ፡ ሐፂን ፡ እመሂ ፡ ሐረሳዊ ፡ ወእመሂ ፡ ኖላዊ ።
Or a harsh crashing of rocks hurled down, Or the swift course of animals bounding along unseen, Or the voice of wild beasts harshly roaring, Or an echo rebounding from the hollows of the mountains, All these things paralysed them with terror.
17:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ μόνοις δὲ ἐκείνοις ἐπετέτατο βαρεῖα νὺξ εἰκὼν τοῦ μέλλοντος αὐτοὺς διαδέχεσθαι σκότους ἑαυτοῖς δὲ ἦσαν βαρύτεροι σκότους
Solis autem illis superposita erat gravis nox , imago tenebrarum quæ superventura illis erat : ipsi ergo sibi erant graviores tenebris .
እመኒ ፡ ገባኢ ፡ ዘይፃሙ ፡ ለተገብሮታ ፡ ለምድር ፡ ነቢሮ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ገዳም ፡ እስመ ፡ ተዓገሠ ፡ ይእተ ፡ ምንዳቤ ፡ ዕፅብተ ፡ ዘተራከበቶ ፡ እንተ ፡ አልባቲ ፡ ማኅለቅት ።
For the whole world beside was enlightened with clear light, And was occupied with unhindered works;
17:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ — — እስመ ፡ ማኅበሮሙ ፡ ተአስረ ፡ በአሐቲ ፡ ሞቅሕ ፡ ሙቃሔ ፡ ጽልመት ፡ ወአምሳል ፡ ዘረከቦሙ ፡ ከመዝ ፡ መንፈስ ፡ ዘይትፋጸይ ።
While over them alone was spread a heavy night, An image of the darkness that should afterward receive them; But yet heavier than darkness were they to themselves.
