18:1
לְֽ֭תַאֲוָה יְבַקֵּ֣שׁ נִפְרָ֑ד בְּכׇל־תּ֝וּשִׁיָּ֗ה יִתְגַּלָּֽע׃
προφάσεις ζητεῖ ἀνὴρ βουλόμενος χωρίζεσθαι ἀπὸ φίλων ἐν παντὶ δὲ καιρῷ ἐπονείδιστος ἔσται
Occasiones quaerit qui vult recedere ab amico : omni tempore erit exprobrabilis.
ምክንያተ፡ የኃሥሥ፡ ብእሲ፡ ዘይፈቅድ፡ ይትፈለጥ፡ እምአዕርክቲሁ፡ ወበኵሉ፡ ጊዜ፡ ዝንጓጔ፡ ይከውን።
A man who isolates himself pursues selfishness, and defies all sound judgment.
18:2
לֹא־יַחְפֹּ֣ץ כְּ֭סִיל בִּתְבוּנָ֑ה כִּ֝֗י אִֽם־בְּהִתְגַּלּ֥וֹת לִבּֽוֹ׃
οὐ χρείαν ἔχει σοφίας ἐνδεὴς φρενῶν μᾶλλον γὰρ ἄγεται ἀφροσύνῃ
Non recipit stultus verba prudentiae, nisi ea dixeris quae versantur in corde ejus.
ኢይፈቅድ፡ ጥበበ፡ ነዳየ፡ አእምሮ፡ ወባሕቱ፡ ይመልኮ፡ ዕበድ።
A fool has no delight in understanding, but only in revealing his own opinion.
18:3
בְּֽבוֹא־רָ֭שָׁע בָּ֣א גַם־בּ֑וּז וְֽעִם־קָל֥וֹן חֶרְפָּֽה׃
ὅταν ἔλθῃ ἀσεβὴς εἰς βάθος κακῶν καταφρονεῖ ἐπέρχεται δὲ αὐτῷ ἀτιμία καὶ ὄνειδος
Impius, cum in profundum venerit peccatorum, contemnit ; sed sequitur eum ignominia et opprobrium.
ሶበ፡ መጽአ፡ ረሲዕ፡ ውስተ፡ ዕመቀ፡ እከያት፡ ይትኄየይ፡ ወያመጽእ፡ ኃሣረ፡ ወዝንጓጔ።
When wickedness comes, contempt also comes, and with shame comes disgrace.
18:4
מַ֣יִם עֲ֭מֻקִּים דִּבְרֵ֣י פִי־אִ֑ישׁ נַ֥חַל נֹ֝בֵ֗עַ מְק֣וֹר חׇכְמָֽה׃
ὕδωρ βαθὺ λόγος ἐν καρδίᾳ ἀνδρός ποταμὸς δὲ ἀναπηδύει καὶ πηγὴ ζωῆς
Aqua profunda verba ex ore viri, et torrens redundans fons sapientiae.
ማይ፡ ዕሙቅ፡ ውስተ፡ ልበ፡ ብእሲ፡ ጠቢብ፡ ወፈለግ፡ ዘይፈለፍል፡ ነቅዐ፡ ሕይወት።
The words of a man’s mouth are like deep waters. The fountain of wisdom is like a flowing brook.
18:5
שְׂאֵ֣ת פְּנֵי־רָשָׁ֣ע לֹא־ט֑וֹב לְהַטּ֥וֹת צַ֝דִּ֗יק בַּמִּשְׁפָּֽט׃
θαυμάσαι πρόσωπον ἀσεβοῦς οὐ καλόν οὐδὲ ὅσιον ἐκκλίνειν τὸ δίκαιον ἐν κρίσει
Accipere personam impii non est bonum, ut declines a veritate judicii.
አንክሮ፡ ገጸ፡ ረሲዓን፡ አኮ፡ ሠናይ፡ ወአኮ፡ አዳም፡ አግኅሦ፡ ጽድቅ፡ በፍትሕ።
To be partial to the faces of the wicked is not good, nor to deprive the innocent of justice.
18:6
שִׂפְתֵ֣י כְ֭סִיל יָבֹ֣אוּ בְרִ֑יב וּ֝פִ֗יו לְֽמַהֲלֻמ֥וֹת יִקְרָֽא׃
χείλη ἄφρονος ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν εἰς κακά τὸ δὲ στόμα αὐτοῦ τὸ θρασὺ θάνατον ἐπικαλεῖται
Labia stulti miscent se rixis, et os ejus jurgia provocat.
ከናፍሪሁ፡ ለዐብድ፡ ያበጽሖ፡ ውስተ፡ እከይ፡ ወአፉሁ፡ ለጒጒዕ፡ ይጼውዕ፡ ሞተ፡ ለርእሱ።
A fool’s lips come into strife, and his mouth invites beatings.
18:7
פִּֽי־כְ֭סִיל מְחִתָּה־ל֑וֹ וּ֝שְׂפָתָ֗יו מוֹקֵ֥שׁ נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃
στόμα ἄφρονος συντριβὴ αὐτῷ τὰ δὲ χείλη αὐτοῦ παγὶς τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ
Os stulti contritio ejus, et labia ipsius ruina animae ejus.
አፉሁ፡ ለዐብድ፡ ቅጥቃጤሁ፡ ወከናፍሪሁ፡ መሥገርተ፡ ነፍሱ።
A fool’s mouth is his destruction, and his lips are a snare to his soul.
18:8
דִּבְרֵ֣י נִ֭רְגָּן כְּמִֽתְלַהֲמִ֑ים וְ֝הֵ֗ם יָרְד֥וּ חַדְרֵי־בָֽטֶן׃
ὀκνηροὺς καταβάλλει φόβος ψυχαὶ δὲ ἀνδρογύνων πεινάσουσιν
Verba bilinguis quasi simplicia, et ipsa perveniunt usque ad interiora ventris. Pigrum dejicit timor ; animae autem effeminatorum esurient.
ሀካይያን፡ ያበዝኁ፡ ፍርሃተ፡ ወመንፈሰ፡ ሰብእሰ፡ ፅኑሳን፡ ይርኅብ።
The words of a gossip are like dainty morsels: they go down into a person’s innermost parts.
18:9
גַּ֭ם מִתְרַפֶּ֣ה בִמְלַאכְתּ֑וֹ אָ֥ח ה֝֗וּא לְבַ֣עַל מַשְׁחִֽית׃
ὁ μὴ ἰώμενος ἑαυτὸν ἐν τοῖς ἔργοις αὐτοῦ ἀδελφός ἐστιν τοῦ λυμαινομένου ἑαυτόν
Qui mollis et dissolutus est in opere suo frater est sua opera dissipantis.
ዘኢይፌውስ፡ ርእሶ፡ በምግባሪሁ፡ እኁሁ፡ ውእቱ፡ ለዘርእሶ፡ ይበልዕ።
One who is slack in his work is brother to him who is a master of destruction.
18:10
מִגְדַּל־עֹ֭ז שֵׁ֣ם יְהֹוָ֑ה בּֽוֹ־יָר֖וּץ צַדִּ֣יק וְנִשְׂגָּֽב׃
ἐκ μεγαλωσύνης ἰσχύος ὄνομα κυρίου αὐτῷ δὲ προσδραμόντες δίκαιοι ὑψοῦνται
Turris fortissima nomen Domini ; ad ipsum currit justus, et exaltabitur.
ዓቢይ፡ ኃይል፡ ስመ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ወኪያሁ፡ በዴግኖ፡ ጻድቃን፡ ይትሌዓሉ።
Yahweh’s name is a strong tower: the righteous run to him, and are safe.
18:11
ה֣וֹן עָ֭שִׁיר קִרְיַ֣ת עֻזּ֑וֹ וּכְחוֹמָ֥ה נִ֝שְׂגָּבָ֗ה בְּמַשְׂכִּתֽוֹ׃
ὕπαρξις πλουσίου ἀνδρὸς πόλις ὀχυρά ἡ δὲ δόξα αὐτῆς μέγα ἐπισκιάζει
Substantia divitis urbs roboris ejus, et quasi murus validus circumdans eum.
ጥሪቱ፡ ለብእሲ፡ ባዕል፡ ሀገር፡ ጽንዕት፡ ወበክብራ፡ ዓቢየ፡ ትጼልል።
The rich man’s wealth is his strong city, like an unscalable wall in his own imagination.
18:12
לִפְנֵי־שֶׁ֭בֶר יִגְבַּ֣הּ לֶב־אִ֑ישׁ וְלִפְנֵ֖י כָב֣וֹד עֲנָוָֽה׃
πρὸ συντριβῆς ὑψοῦται καρδία ἀνδρός καὶ πρὸ δόξης ταπεινοῦται
Antequam conteratur, exaltatur cor hominis, et antequam glorificetur, humiliatur.
ዘእንበለ፡ ቅጥቃጤ፡ ይትዔበይ፡ ልበ፡ ብእሲ፡ ወዘእንበለ፡ ክብር፡ ይቴሐት።
Before destruction the heart of man is proud, but before honor is humility.
18:13
מֵשִׁ֣יב דָּ֭בָר בְּטֶ֣רֶם יִשְׁמָ֑ע אִוֶּ֥לֶת הִיא־ל֝֗וֹ וּכְלִמָּֽה׃
ὃς ἀποκρίνεται λόγον πρὶν ἀκοῦσαι ἀφροσύνη αὐτῷ ἐστιν καὶ ὄνειδος
Qui prius respondet quam audiat, stultum se esse demonstrat, et confusione dignum.
ዘይነብብ፡ ቃለ፡ ዘእንበለ፡ ይስማዕ፡ ዐብድ፡ ውእቱ፡ ወሎቱ፡ ይደሉ፡ ምናኔ።
He who answers before he hears, that is folly and shame to him.
18:14
רֽוּחַ־אִ֭ישׁ יְכַלְכֵּ֣ל מַחֲלֵ֑הוּ וְר֥וּחַ נְ֝כֵאָ֗ה מִ֣י יִשָּׂאֶֽנָּה׃
θυμὸν ἀνδρὸς πραΰνει θεράπων φρόνιμος ὀλιγόψυχον δὲ ἄνδρα τίς ὑποίσει
Spiritus viri sustentat imbecillitatem suam ; spiritum vero ad irascendum facilem quis poterit sustinere ?
መዓተ፡ ንጉሥ፡ ያኃሥዕ፡ ገብር፡ ጠቢብ፡ ለሕፁፀ፡ ነፍስሰ፡ ብእሲ፡ መኑ፡ ይክሎ።
A man’s spirit will sustain him in sickness, but a crushed spirit, who can bear?
18:15
לֵ֣ב נָ֭בוֹן יִקְנֶה־דָּ֑עַת וְאֹ֥זֶן חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים תְּבַקֶּשׁ־דָּֽעַת׃
καρδία φρονίμου κτᾶται αἴσθησιν ὦτα δὲ σοφῶν ζητεῖ ἔννοιαν
Cor prudens possidebit scientiam, et auris sapientium quaerit doctrinam.
ልበ፡ ብእሲ፡ ጠቢብ፡ ያጠሪ፡ አእምሮ፡ ወዕዝነ፡ ጠቢባን፡ የኃሥሥ፡ ቃለ፡ ተግሣፅ።
The heart of the discerning gets knowledge. The ear of the wise seeks knowledge.
18:16
מַתָּ֣ן אָ֭דָם יַרְחִ֣יב ל֑וֹ וְלִפְנֵ֖י גְדֹלִ֣ים יַנְחֶֽנּוּ׃
δόμα ἀνθρώπου ἐμπλατύνει αὐτὸν καὶ παρὰ δυνάσταις καθιζάνει αὐτόν
Donum hominis dilatat viam ejus, et ante principes spatium ei facit.
ሀብት፡ ብእሴ፡ ያሌዕል፡ ወምስለ፡ መኳንንት፡ ያነብሮ።
A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men.
18:17
צַדִּ֣יק הָרִאשׁ֣וֹן בְּרִיב֑וֹ (יבא) [וּבָֽא־]רֵ֝עֵ֗הוּ וַחֲקָרֽוֹ׃
δίκαιος ἑαυτοῦ κατήγορος ἐν πρωτολογίᾳ ὡς δ’ ἂν ἐπιβάλῃ ὁ ἀντίδικος ἐλέγχεται
Justus prior est accusator sui : venit amicus ejus, et investigabit eum.
ጻድቅ፡ መስተዋድየ፡ ርእሱ፡ እምቅድመ፡ ነገር፡ ወበዘአምጽአ፡ እድው፡ ይዘልፍ።
He who pleads his cause first seems right— until another comes and questions him.
18:18
מִ֭דְיָנִים יַשְׁבִּ֣ית הַגּוֹרָ֑ל וּבֵ֖ין עֲצוּמִ֣ים יַפְרִֽיד׃
ἀντιλογίας παύει κλῆρος ἐν δὲ δυνάσταις ὁρίζει
Contradictiones comprimit sors, et inter potentes quoque dijudicat.
ጋእዝ፡ ያኅድግ፡ ዕፃ፡ ወማእከለ፡ ፅኑዓን፡ ይፈልጥ።
The lot settles disputes, and keeps strong ones apart.
18:19
אָ֗ח נִפְשָׁ֥ע מִקִּרְיַת־עֹ֑ז (ומדונים) [וּ֝מִדְיָנִ֗ים] כִּבְרִ֥יחַ אַרְמֽוֹן׃
ἀδελφὸς ὑπὸ ἀδελφοῦ βοηθούμενος ὡς πόλις ὀχυρὰ καὶ ὑψηλή ἰσχύει δὲ ὥσπερ τεθεμελιωμένον βασίλειον
Frater qui adjuvatur a fratre quasi civitas firma, et judicia quasi vectes urbium.
ወካሕደ፡ ያኀድግ፡ አርማሚ፡ ወበኀበ፡ መኳንንት፡ ይሠርዕ።
A brother offended is more difficult than a fortified city. Disputes are like the bars of a fortress.
18:20
מִפְּרִ֣י פִי־אִ֭ישׁ תִּשְׂבַּ֣ע בִּטְנ֑וֹ תְּבוּאַ֖ת שְׂפָתָ֣יו יִשְׂבָּֽע׃
ἀπὸ καρπῶν στόματος ἀνὴρ πίμπλησιν κοιλίαν αὐτοῦ ἀπὸ δὲ καρπῶν χειλέων αὐτοῦ ἐμπλησθήσεται
De fructu oris viri replebitur venter ejus, et genimina labiorum ipsius saturabunt eum.
እኁ፡ ምስለ፡ እኁ፡ ዘይትራዳእ፡ ከመ፡ ሀገር፡ ጽንዕት፡ ወልዕልት፡ ወጽኑዕ፡ ከመ፡ መሠረት፡ ሡርርት።
A man’s stomach is filled with the fruit of his mouth. With the harvest of his lips he is satisfied.
18:21
מָ֣וֶת וְ֭חַיִּים בְּיַד־לָשׁ֑וֹן וְ֝אֹהֲבֶ֗יהָ יֹאכַ֥ל פִּרְיָֽהּ׃
θάνατος καὶ ζωὴ ἐν χειρὶ γλώσσης οἱ δὲ κρατοῦντες αὐτῆς ἔδονται τοὺς καρποὺς αὐτῆς
Mors et vita in manu linguae ; qui diligunt eam comedent fructus ejus.
እምፍሬ፡ አፉሁ፡ ይመልእ፡ ብእሲ፡ ከረሦ፡ ወእምፍሬ፡ ከናፍሪሁ፡ ይጸግብ።
Death and life are in the power of the tongue; those who love it will eat its fruit.
18:22
מָצָ֣א אִ֭שָּׁה מָ֣צָא ט֑וֹב וַיָּ֥פֶק רָ֝צ֗וֹן מֵיְהֹוָֽה׃
ὃς εὗρεν γυναῖκα ἀγαθήν εὗρεν χάριτας ἔλαβεν δὲ παρὰ θεοῦ ἱλαρότητα ὃς ἐκβάλλει γυναῖκα ἀγαθήν ἐκβάλλει τὰ ἀγαθά ὁ δὲ κατέχων μοιχαλίδα ἄφρων καὶ ἀσεβής
Qui invenit mulierem bonam invenit bonum, et hauriet jucunditatem a Domino. Qui expellit mulierem bonam expellit bonum ; qui autem tenet adulteram stultus est et impius.
ሞት፡ ወሕይወት፡ ውስተ፡ እደ፡ ልሳን፡ ወእለሰ፡ ያጸንዕዋ፡ ይበልዑ፡ ፍሬሃ።
Whoever finds a wife finds a good thing, and obtains favor of Yahweh.
18:23
תַּחֲנוּנִ֥ים יְדַבֶּר־רָ֑שׁ וְ֝עָשִׁ֗יר יַעֲנֶ֥ה עַזּֽוֹת׃
—
Cum obsecrationibus loquetur pauper, et dives effabitur rigide.
ዘረከበ፡ ብእሲተ፡ ኄርተ፡ ረከበ፡ ሞገሰ፡ ወነሥአ፡ እምኀበ፡ እግዚአብሔር፡ ውኅዋኄ።
The poor plead for mercy, but the rich answer harshly.
18:24
אִ֣ישׁ רֵ֭עִים לְהִתְרֹעֵ֑עַ וְיֵ֥שׁ אֹ֝הֵ֗ב דָּבֵ֥ק מֵאָֽח׃
—
Vir amabilis ad societatem magis amicus erit quam frater.
ዘያወፅአ፡ ብእሲተ፡ ኄርተ፡ አውፅአ፡ ሠናያተ፡ ወዘያነብርሰ፡ ብእሲተ፡ ዘማዊተ፡ ዐብድ፡ ወረሲዕ፡ ውእቱ።
A man of many companions may be ruined, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.
