23:1
וַיִּהְיוּ֙ חַיֵּ֣י שָׂרָ֔ה מֵאָ֥ה שָׁנָ֛ה וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וְשֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֑ים שְׁנֵ֖י חַיֵּ֥י שָׂרָֽה׃
ἐγένετο δὲ ἡ ζωὴ Σαρρας ἔτη ἑκατὸν εἴκοσι ἑπτά
Vixit autem Sara centum viginti septem annis.
ወኮነ ፡ ሕይወታ ፡ ለሳራ ፡ ፻ወ፳ወ፯ዓመተ ።
Sarah lived one hundred twenty-seven years. This was the length of Sarah’s life.
23:2
וַתָּ֣מׇת שָׂרָ֗ה בְּקִרְיַ֥ת אַרְבַּ֛ע הִ֥וא חֶבְר֖וֹן בְּאֶ֣רֶץ כְּנָ֑עַן וַיָּבֹא֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִסְפֹּ֥ד לְשָׂרָ֖ה וְלִבְכֹּתָֽהּ׃
καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαρρα ἐν πόλει Αρβοκ ἥ ἐστιν ἐν τῷ κοιλώματι αὕτη ἐστὶν Χεβρων ἐν γῇ Χανααν ἦλθεν δὲ Αβρααμ κόψασθαι Σαρραν καὶ πενθῆσαι
Et mortua est in civitate Arbee, quae est Hebron, in terra Chanaan : venitque Abraham ut plangeret et fleret eam.
ወሞተት ፡ ሳራ ፡ በሀገረ ፡ አራባቅ ፡ እንተ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ቈላት ፡ እንተ ፡ ይእቲ ፡ ኬብሮን ፡ እንተ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ከናአን ፡ ወዐርገ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ ከመ ፡ ይላሕዋ ፡ ለሳራ ፡ ወከመ ፡ ይብክያ ።
Sarah died in Kiriath Arba (also called Hebron), in the land of Canaan. Abraham came to mourn for Sarah, and to weep for her.
23:3
וַיָּ֙קׇם֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם מֵעַ֖ל פְּנֵ֣י מֵת֑וֹ וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אֶל־בְּנֵי־חֵ֖ת לֵאמֹֽר׃
καὶ ἀνέστη Αβρααμ ἀπὸ τοῦ νεκροῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπεν τοῖς υἱοῖς Χετ λέγων
Cumque surrexisset ab officio funeris, locutus est ad filios Heth, dicens :
ወተንሥአ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ እምኀበ ፡ በድና ፡ ወይቤሎሙ ፡ ለደቂቀ ፡ ኬጢ ፤
Abraham rose up from before his dead and spoke to the children of Heth, saying,
23:4
גֵּר־וְתוֹשָׁ֥ב אָנֹכִ֖י עִמָּכֶ֑ם תְּנ֨וּ לִ֤י אֲחֻזַּת־קֶ֙בֶר֙ עִמָּכֶ֔ם וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה מֵתִ֖י מִלְּפָנָֽי׃
πάροικος καὶ παρεπίδημος ἐγώ εἰμι μεθ’ ὑμῶν δότε οὖν μοι κτῆσιν τάφου μεθ’ ὑμῶν καὶ θάψω τὸν νεκρόν μου ἀπ’ ἐμοῦ
Advena sum et peregrinus apud vos : date mihi jus sepulchri vobiscum, ut sepeliam mortuum meum.
ነግድ ፡ ወፈላሲ ፡ አነ ፡ ምስሌክሙ ፡ ሀቡኒ ፡ ሊተኒ ፡ ከመ ፡ እሣየጥ ፡ መቃብረ ፡ ከማክሙ ፡ ወእቅብር ፡ በድንየ ።
“I am a stranger and a foreigner living with you. Give me a possession of a burying-place with you, that I may bury my dead out of my sight.”
23:5
וַיַּעֲנ֧וּ בְנֵי־חֵ֛ת אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֥ר לֽוֹ׃
ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ οἱ υἱοὶ Χετ πρὸς Αβρααμ λέγοντες
Responderunt filii Heth, dicentes :
ወአውሥእዎ ፡ ደቂቀ ፡ ኬጢ ፡ ለአብርሃም ፡ ወይቤልዎ ፡ አልቦ ፡ እግዚኦ ።
The children of Heth answered Abraham, saying to him,
23:6
שְׁמָעֵ֣נוּ׀ אֲדֹנִ֗י נְשִׂ֨יא אֱלֹהִ֤ים אַתָּה֙ בְּתוֹכֵ֔נוּ בְּמִבְחַ֣ר קְבָרֵ֔ינוּ קְבֹ֖ר אֶת־מֵתֶ֑ךָ אִ֣ישׁ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ אֶת־קִבְר֛וֹ לֹֽא־יִכְלֶ֥ה מִמְּךָ֖ מִקְּבֹ֥ר מֵתֶֽךָ׃
μή κύριε ἄκουσον δὲ ἡμῶν βασιλεὺς παρὰ θεοῦ εἶ σὺ ἐν ἡμῖν ἐν τοῖς ἐκλεκτοῖς μνημείοις ἡμῶν θάψον τὸν νεκρόν σου οὐδεὶς γὰρ ἡμῶν τὸ μνημεῖον αὐτοῦ κωλύσει ἀπὸ σοῦ τοῦ θάψαι τὸν νεκρόν σου ἐκεῖ
Audi nos, domine : princeps Dei es apud nos : in electis sepulchris nostris sepeli mortuum tuum, nullusque te prohibere poterit quin in monumento ejus sepelias mortuum tuum.
ስምዐነ ፡ አንተ ፡ እስመ ፡ ንጉሥ ፡ አንተ ፡ ለነ ፡ እምኀበ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ በውስተ ፡ ዘኀረይከ ፡ መቃብርነ ፡ ቅብር ፡ በድነከ ፡ እስመ ፡ አልቦ ፡ እምኔነ ፡ ዘይከልአከ ፡ መቃብሪሁ ፡ ከመ ፡ ትቅብር ፡ በድነከ ፡ ህየ ።
“Hear us, my lord. You are a prince of God among us. Bury your dead in the best of our tombs. None of us will withhold from you his tomb. Bury your dead.”
23:7
וַיָּ֧קׇם אַבְרָהָ֛ם וַיִּשְׁתַּ֥חוּ לְעַם־הָאָ֖רֶץ לִבְנֵי־חֵֽת׃
ἀναστὰς δὲ Αβρααμ προσεκύνησεν τῷ λαῷ τῆς γῆς τοῖς υἱοῖς Χετ
Surrexit Abraham, et adoravit populum terrae, filios videlicet Heth :
ወተንሥአ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ ወሰገደ ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ሕዝብ ፡ ዘደቂቀ ፡ ኬጢ ።
Abraham rose up, and bowed himself to the people of the land, to the children of Heth.
23:8
וַיְדַבֵּ֥ר אִתָּ֖ם לֵאמֹ֑ר אִם־יֵ֣שׁ אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁכֶ֗ם לִקְבֹּ֤ר אֶת־מֵתִי֙ מִלְּפָנַ֔י שְׁמָע֕וּנִי וּפִגְעוּ־לִ֖י בְּעֶפְר֥וֹן בֶּן־צֹֽחַר׃
καὶ ἐλάλησεν πρὸς αὐτοὺς Αβρααμ λέγων εἰ ἔχετε τῇ ψυχῇ ὑμῶν ὥστε θάψαι τὸν νεκρόν μου ἀπὸ προσώπου μου ἀκούσατέ μου καὶ λαλήσατε περὶ ἐμοῦ Εφρων τῷ τοῦ Σααρ
dixitque ad eos : Si placet animae vestrae ut sepeliam mortuum meum, audite me, et intercedite pro me apud Ephron filium Seor :
ወይቤሎሙ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ እመ ፡ ሐለይክሙ ፡ ታቅብሩኒ ፡ በድንየ ፡ ንግርዎ ፡ በእንቲአየ ፡ ለኤፌሮን ፡ ዘሳአር ።
He talked with them, saying, “If you agree that I should bury my dead out of my sight, hear me, and entreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,
23:9
וְיִתֶּן־לִ֗י אֶת־מְעָרַ֤ת הַמַּכְפֵּלָה֙ אֲשֶׁר־ל֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֖ר בִּקְצֵ֣ה שָׂדֵ֑הוּ בְּכֶ֨סֶף מָלֵ֜א יִתְּנֶ֥נָּה לִּ֛י בְּתוֹכְכֶ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָֽבֶר׃
καὶ δότω μοι τὸ σπήλαιον τὸ διπλοῦν ὅ ἐστιν αὐτῷ τὸ ὂν ἐν μέρει τοῦ ἀγροῦ αὐτοῦ ἀργυρίου τοῦ ἀξίου δότω μοι αὐτὸ ἐν ὑμῖν εἰς κτῆσιν μνημείου
ut det mihi speluncam duplicem, quam habet in extrema parte agri sui : pecunia digna tradat eam mihi coram vobis in possessionem sepulchri.
ወሀቡኒ ፡ በአተ ፡ ካዕበተ ፡ እንቲአሁ ፡ እንተ ፡ ሀለወት ፡ ውስተ ፡ ገራህቱ ፡ ሀቡኒያ ፡ በወርቅየ ፡ በሤጥ ፡ በመጠነ ፡ ኮነ ፡ ወእሣየጦ ፡ እምኔክሙ ።
that he may sell me the cave of Machpelah, which he has, which is in the end of his field. For the full price let him sell it to me among you as a possession for a burial place.”
23:10
וְעֶפְר֥וֹן יֹשֵׁ֖ב בְּת֣וֹךְ בְּנֵי־חֵ֑ת וַיַּ֩עַן֩ עֶפְר֨וֹן הַחִתִּ֤י אֶת־אַבְרָהָם֙ בְּאׇזְנֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֔ת לְכֹ֛ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר־עִיר֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃
Εφρων δὲ ἐκάθητο ἐν μέσῳ τῶν υἱῶν Χετ ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ Εφρων ὁ Χετταῖος πρὸς Αβρααμ εἶπεν ἀκουόντων τῶν υἱῶν Χετ καὶ πάντων τῶν εἰσπορευομένων εἰς τὴν πόλιν λέγων
Habitabat autem Ephron in medio filiorum Heth. Responditque Ephron ad Abraham, cunctis audientibus qui ingrediebantur portam civitatis illius, dicens :
ወሀሉ ፡ ኤፌሮን ፡ ማእከሎሙ ፡ ይነብር ፡ ለደቂቀ ፡ ኬጢ ፡ ወይቤሎ ፡ ኤፌሮን ፡ ኬጥያዊ ፡ ለአብርሃም ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይሰምዑ ፡ ደቂቀ ፡ ኬጢ ፡ ወኵሎሙ ፡ እለ ፡ ይበውኡ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ሀገር ፤
Now Ephron was sitting in the middle of the children of Heth. Ephron the Hittite answered Abraham in the hearing of the children of Heth, even of all who went in at the gate of his city, saying,
23:11
לֹֽא־אֲדֹנִ֣י שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי הַשָּׂדֶה֙ נָתַ֣תִּי לָ֔ךְ וְהַמְּעָרָ֥ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֖וֹ לְךָ֣ נְתַתִּ֑יהָ לְעֵינֵ֧י בְנֵי־עַמִּ֛י נְתַתִּ֥יהָ לָּ֖ךְ קְבֹ֥ר מֵתֶֽךָ׃
παρ’ ἐμοὶ γενοῦ κύριε καὶ ἄκουσόν μου τὸν ἀγρὸν καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον τὸ ἐν αὐτῷ σοι δίδωμι ἐναντίον πάντων τῶν πολιτῶν μου δέδωκά σοι θάψον τὸν νεκρόν σου
Nequaquam ita fiat, domine mi, sed tu magis ausculta quod loquor. Agrum trado tibi, et speluncam quae in eo est, praesentibus filiis populi mei ; sepeli mortuum tuum.
ቅረበኒ ፡ እግዚእየ ፡ ወስምዐኒ ፡ ገራህቱሂ ፡ ወበአቱሂ ፡ ዘውስቴቱ ፡ ለከ ፡ እሁበከ ፡ በቅድመ ፡ ኵሉ ፡ ሰብአ ፡ ሀገርየ ፡ ናሁ ፡ ወሀብኩካሁ ፡ ቅብር ፡ በድነከ ።
“No, my lord, hear me. I give you the field, and I give you the cave that is in it. In the presence of the children of my people I give it to you. Bury your dead.”
23:12
וַיִּשְׁתַּ֙חוּ֙ אַבְרָהָ֔ם לִפְנֵ֖י עַ֥ם הָאָֽרֶץ׃
καὶ προσεκύνησεν Αβρααμ ἐναντίον τοῦ λαοῦ τῆς γῆς
Adoravit Abraham coram populo terrae.
ወሰገደ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ ቅድመ ፡ ኵሉ ፡ ሕዝብ ።
Abraham bowed himself down before the people of the land.
23:13
וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר אֶל־עֶפְר֜וֹן בְּאׇזְנֵ֤י עַם־הָאָ֙רֶץ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אַ֛ךְ אִם־אַתָּ֥ה ל֖וּ שְׁמָעֵ֑נִי נָתַ֜תִּי כֶּ֤סֶף הַשָּׂדֶה֙ קַ֣ח מִמֶּ֔נִּי וְאֶקְבְּרָ֥ה אֶת־מֵתִ֖י שָֽׁמָּה׃
καὶ εἶπεν τῷ Εφρων εἰς τὰ ὦτα τοῦ λαοῦ τῆς γῆς ἐπειδὴ πρὸς ἐμοῦ εἶ ἄκουσόν μου τὸ ἀργύριον τοῦ ἀγροῦ λαβὲ παρ’ ἐμοῦ καὶ θάψω τὸν νεκρόν μου ἐκεῖ
Et locutus est ad Ephron circumstante plebe : Quaeso ut audias me : dabo pecuniam pro agro : suscipe eam, et sic sepeliam mortuum meum in eo.
ወይቤሎ ፡ ለኤፌሮን ፡ እንዘ ፡ ይሰምዑ ፡ ኵሎሙ ፡ እስመ ፡ ቅሩብ ፡ አንተ ፡ ኀቤየ ፡ ስምዐኒ ፡ ሤጦ ፡ ለውእቱ ፡ ገራህት ፡ ንሣእ ፡ እምኀቤየ ፡ ወእቅብር ፡ በድንየ ፡ ህየ ።
He spoke to Ephron in the audience of the people of the land, saying, “But if you will, please hear me. I will give the price of the field. Take it from me, and I will bury my dead there.”
23:14
וַיַּ֧עַן עֶפְר֛וֹן אֶת־אַבְרָהָ֖ם לֵאמֹ֥ר לֽוֹ׃
ἀπεκρίθη δὲ Εφρων τῷ Αβρααμ λέγων
Responditque Ephron :
ወአውሥኦ ፡ ኤፌሮን ፡ ለአብርሃም ፡ ወይቤሎ ፤
Ephron answered Abraham, saying to him,
23:15
אֲדֹנִ֣י שְׁמָעֵ֔נִי אֶ֩רֶץ֩ אַרְבַּ֨ע מֵאֹ֧ת שֶֽׁקֶל־כֶּ֛סֶף בֵּינִ֥י וּבֵֽינְךָ֖ מַה־הִ֑וא וְאֶת־מֵתְךָ֖ קְבֹֽר׃
οὐχί κύριε ἀκήκοα γῆ τετρακοσίων διδράχμων ἀργυρίου ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ τί ἂν εἴη τοῦτο σὺ δὲ τὸν νεκρόν σου θάψον
Domine mi, audi me : terra, quam postulas, quadringentis siclis argenti valet : istud est pretium inter me et te : sed quantum est hoc ? sepeli mortuum tuum.
አልቦ ፡ እግዚኦ ፡ ሰማዕኩ ፡ ምንትኑ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ዝንቱ ፡ ወምንትኑ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ አርባዕቱ ፡ ምእት ፡ ጠፋልሕ ፡ ማእከሌየ ፡ ወማእከሌከ ፡ ቅብር ፡ እንከሰ ፡ በድነከ ፡ ህየ ።
“My lord, listen to me. What is a piece of land worth four hundred shekels of silver between me and you? Therefore bury your dead.”
23:16
וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע אַבְרָהָם֮ אֶל־עֶפְרוֹן֒ וַיִּשְׁקֹ֤ל אַבְרָהָם֙ לְעֶפְרֹ֔ן אֶת־הַכֶּ֕סֶף אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֖ר בְּאׇזְנֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֑ת אַרְבַּ֤ע מֵאוֹת֙ שֶׁ֣קֶל כֶּ֔סֶף עֹבֵ֖ר לַסֹּחֵֽר׃
καὶ ἤκουσεν Αβρααμ τοῦ Εφρων καὶ ἀπεκατέστησεν Αβρααμ τῷ Εφρων τὸ ἀργύριον ὃ ἐλάλησεν εἰς τὰ ὦτα τῶν υἱῶν Χετ τετρακόσια δίδραχμα ἀργυρίου δοκίμου ἐμπόροις
Quod cum audisset Abraham, appendit pecuniam, quam Ephron postulaverat, audientibus filiis Heth, quadringentos siclos argenti probatae monetae publicae.
ወሰምዖ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ ለኤፌሮን ፡ በከመ ፡ ይቤሎ ፡ በቅድመ ፡ ደቂቀ ፡ ኬጢ ፡ ወፈነወ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ ለኤፌሮን ፡ አርባዕተ ፡ ምእተ ፡ ጠፋልሐ ፡ ብሩር ፡ መፍዴ ፡ ዘኢኮነ ፡ ተምያነ ።
Abraham listened to Ephron. Abraham weighed to Ephron the silver which he had named in the hearing of the children of Heth, four hundred shekels of silver, according to the current merchants’ standard.
23:17
וַיָּ֣קׇם׀ שְׂדֵ֣ה עֶפְר֗וֹן אֲשֶׁר֙ בַּמַּכְפֵּלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר לִפְנֵ֣י מַמְרֵ֑א הַשָּׂדֶה֙ וְהַמְּעָרָ֣ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֔וֹ וְכׇל־הָעֵץ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּכׇל־גְּבֻל֖וֹ סָבִֽיב׃
καὶ ἔστη ὁ ἀγρὸς Εφρων ὃς ἦν ἐν τῷ διπλῷ σπηλαίῳ ὅς ἐστιν κατὰ πρόσωπον Μαμβρη ὁ ἀγρὸς καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον ὃ ἦν ἐν αὐτῷ καὶ πᾶν δένδρον ὃ ἦν ἐν τῷ ἀγρῷ ὅ ἐστιν ἐν τοῖς ὁρίοις αὐτοῦ κύκλῳ
Confirmatusque est ager quondam Ephronis, in quo erat spelunca duplex, respiciens Mambre, tam ipse, quam spelunca, et omnes arbores ejus in cunctis terminis ejus per circuitum,
ወኮኖ ፡ ገራህቱ ፡ ለኤፌሮን ፡ ወበአቱሂ ፡ ወኵሉ ፡ ዕፀው ፡ እንተ ፡ ውስቴታ ፤
So the field of Ephron, which was in Machpelah, which was before Mamre, the field, the cave which was in it, and all the trees that were in the field, that were in all of its borders, were deeded
23:18
לְאַבְרָהָ֥ם לְמִקְנָ֖ה לְעֵינֵ֣י בְנֵי־חֵ֑ת בְּכֹ֖ל בָּאֵ֥י שַֽׁעַר־עִירֽוֹ׃
τῷ Αβρααμ εἰς κτῆσιν ἐναντίον τῶν υἱῶν Χετ καὶ πάντων τῶν εἰσπορευομένων εἰς τὴν πόλιν
Abrahae in possessionem, videntibus filiis Heth, et cunctis qui intrabant portam civitatis illius.
ኮነ ፡ ለአብርሃም ፡ ወተሣየጦ ፡ በቅድመ ፡ ደቂቀ ፡ ኬጡ ።
to Abraham for a possession in the presence of the children of Heth, before all who went in at the gate of his city.
23:19
וְאַחֲרֵי־כֵן֩ קָבַ֨ר אַבְרָהָ֜ם אֶת־שָׂרָ֣ה אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ אֶל־מְעָרַ֞ת שְׂדֵ֧ה הַמַּכְפֵּלָ֛ה עַל־פְּנֵ֥י מַמְרֵ֖א הִ֣וא חֶבְר֑וֹן בְּאֶ֖רֶץ כְּנָֽעַן׃
μετὰ ταῦτα ἔθαψεν Αβρααμ Σαρραν τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ σπηλαίῳ τοῦ ἀγροῦ τῷ διπλῷ ὅ ἐστιν ἀπέναντι Μαμβρη αὕτη ἐστὶν Χεβρων ἐν τῇ γῇ Χανααν
Atque ita sepelivit Abraham Saram uxorem suam in spelunca agri duplici, quae respiciebat Mambre. Haec est Hebron in terra Chanaan.
ወእምዝ ፡ ቀበራ ፡ አብርሃም ፡ ለሳራ ፡ ብእሲቱ ፡ ውስተ ፡ በአተ ፡ ካዕበት ፡ እንተ ፡ ተሣየጠ ፡ በኀበ ፡ ኤፌሮን ።
After this, Abraham buried Sarah his wife in the cave of the field of Machpelah before Mamre (that is, Hebron), in the land of Canaan.
23:20
וַיָּ֨קׇם הַשָּׂדֶ֜ה וְהַמְּעָרָ֧ה אֲשֶׁר־בּ֛וֹ לְאַבְרָהָ֖ם לַאֲחֻזַּת־קָ֑בֶר מֵאֵ֖ת בְּנֵי־חֵֽת׃ {ס}
καὶ ἐκυρώθη ὁ ἀγρὸς καὶ τὸ σπήλαιον ὃ ἦν ἐν αὐτῷ τῷ Αβρααμ εἰς κτῆσιν τάφου παρὰ τῶν υἱῶν Χετ
Et confirmatus est ager, et antrum quod erat in eo, Abrahae in possessionem monumenti a filiis Heth.

The field, and the cave that is in it, were deeded to Abraham by the children of Heth as a possession for a burial place.
