2:1
I will stand at my watch and climb upon a rock and keep watch, to see what he will speak in me, and what I should answer concerning my reproof.
2:2
And the Lord answered me and said: Write the vision, and plainly on a tablet, so that the one who reads it may run after it.
2:3
For the vision still awaits an appointed time, and it will rise up at the end and not in vain. If it should be late, wait for him, because he who is coming will come and will not delay.
2:4
If he shrinks back, my soul takes no pleasure in him; but the righteous one shall live by my faith.
2:5
But the one soaked in wine, a scoffer, an arrogant man - he will accomplish nothing. He has widened his appetite like Hades, and like death he is never filled; he will gather to himself all the nations and receive to himself all the peoples.
2:6
Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a riddle for the telling of him? And they will say: Alas for the one who multiplies to himself what is not his own - how long? - and who weighs down his collar heavily.
2:7
For suddenly those who bite him will rise up, and your plotters will wake up, and you will become plunder for them.
2:8
Because you plundered many nations, all the peoples who are left will plunder you, because of human blood and the impiety done to the land and the city and all who dwell in it.
2:9
O you who greedily take evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be snatched out of the hand of evils!
2:10
You have planned shame for your house; you have made an end of many peoples, and your soul has sinned.
2:11
For a stone will cry out from the wall, and a beetle out of the wood will utter these things.
2:12
Alas for the one who builds a city with blood and founds a city on injustices!
2:13
Are these things not from the Lord Almighty? Many peoples have been consumed in fire, and many nations have grown faint.
2:14
For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, as water will cover them.
2:15
O you who give your neighbor a turbid, overthrowing drink and make him drunk, so that you may gaze upon their caverns!
2:16
Drink your fill of dishonor instead of glory, you too; be shaken and reel. The cup of the right hand of the Lord has come around upon you, and dishonor has gathered upon your glory.
2:17
For the impiety of Lebanon will cover you, and the misery of wild animals will terrify you, because of human blood and the impiety done to the land and the city and all who dwell in it.
2:18
What use is a carved image, that they carved it? They formed it as a cast thing, a false phantom, because the one who formed it trusts in his own formation, making mute idols.
2:19
Alas for the one who says to the wood, Sober up, awake, and to the stone, Rise up. It is itself a phantom; this is a plating of gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in it.
2:20
But the Lord is in his holy temple; let all the earth stand in awe before his face.
