1:2132
One should also note this, that he calls the fine flour offered, and the loaves baked in the oven, and the loaves baked on the griddle, and the cakes from the pan, a 'sacrifice,' cheering by this name those who live in poverty, so that they might not be distressed at lacking animals
1:2133
One should also note this, that he calls the man who offers the animal 'man':
1:2134
'A man,' he says, 'from among you, who offers a gift to the Lord, shall bring it from the birds, from the oxen, or from the sheep'
1:2135
But the one who offers fine flour he calls 'soul':
1:2136
'For if a soul,' he says, 'offers a gift, a sacrifice to the Lord, his gift shall be fine flour'
1:2137
For the rational one offers the irrational.
1:2138
他禁止獻上發酵的餅,理由如我先前所說;
He forbids leavened bread to be offered, for the reason I have stated;
1:2139
他也禁止在祭壇上獻蜂蜜;
he also forbids honey to be offered on the altar;
1:2140
有人說,這是因為蜜蜂也棲息於不潔之處,並從四處收集牠釀蜜的材料;
And some say this is because the bee also settles on unclean places, gathering from every source the materials of its honey-making;
1:2141
but others have said we are thereby taught to perform our offerings from our own labors, according to Solomon's exhortation which says: 'Honor the Lord from your righteous labors, and give him firstfruits from the fruits of righteousness'
1:2142
'But the produce of the bee,' he says, 'is not our own labor' -- yet this argument is not exact
1:2143
For indeed bee-keeping is itself a form of human diligence
1:2144
有人專務耕作,有人專務牧羊;
for some attend to farming, others to shepherding;
1:2145
and some to trade, others to bee-keeping
1:2146
我認為,酵所暗示的是罪惡的陳舊積年;
I think, then, that by the leaven is hinted the antiquity of wickedness;
1:2147
and by the honey, pleasure is forbidden
1:2148
此外,他也吩咐要將這些的初熟部分獻給祭司;
To the priests, moreover, he commanded that the firstfruits of these also be offered;
1:2149
因為祭司是為我們的罪代求的;
for these offer intercessions on behalf of our sins;
1:2150
wherefore through the prophet he said concerning them:
1:2151
'They shall eat the sins of my people'
1:2152
He commands salt to be cast upon the sacrificial victims, signifying thereby the discerning faculty of the soul
1:2153
Of this the sacrifice of Cain was deprived; wherefore he heard from the God of all:
1:2154
'Did you not sin, if you offered rightly but did not divide rightly?'
1:2155
And the divine apostle also legislates, saying:
1:2156
'Let your speech always be seasoned with salt'
1:2157
And the Lord said to the apostles:
1:2158
「你們是地上的鹽;
'You are the salt of the earth;
1:2159
but if the salt loses its savor, with what shall it be salted?' He commands all the sacrificial victims to be offered unharmed and unblemished, though they differ and are offered in different manners
1:2160
By these things he teaches those in every walk of life to possess that which is unblemished
1:2161
使那些持守童貞的人按其律法生活;
and those who embrace virginity to conduct their lives according to its laws;
1:2162
使那些擔負婚姻之軛的人,不因彼此相待的行為敗壞這軛的維繫;
those who take up the yoke of marriage, not to corrupt its bond through their conduct toward one another;
1:2163
those who prefer the ascetic life, to keep the rule of perfection
1:2164
and, to speak collectively, that the rich, the poor, the enslaved, and the powerful should each, in their own ranks, possess that which is unmarred and unblemished
1:2165
在所獻的祭物中,除全燔祭外,有的獻給祭壇,有的則給祭司;
Of the things sacrificed, apart from the whole burnt offerings, some were offered to the altar, and some given to the priests;
1:2166
wherefore the divine apostle said that they share with the altar
1:2167
and the rest of the meats were allotted to the need of those offering
1:2168
然而在全燔祭上,另加上單獨獻上的部分,如腰子、脂油,以及肝上的網膜;
Upon the whole burnt offerings, however, were placed the parts offered separately, such as the kidneys, the fat, and the lobe of the liver;
1:2169
and from some of the sacrificial victims, also the loin, or according to the other translators, the tail
1:2170
since we, the imperfect, use those perfect in virtue as our intercessors, and through them offer our prayers
1:2171
獻祭者將雙手按在祭牲身上,彷彿是按上自己所行的事;
The one making the offering would lay his hands upon the victim, as it were laying on his own deeds;
1:2172
因為雙手正表明所行之事;
for the hands are indicative of deeds;
1:2173
and on behalf of these he would offer the sacrificial victim.
1:2174
He commands abstention from blood and fat, and ordains that both be offered at the altar.
1:2175
It is most just that both be dedicated to God.
1:2176
他吩咐,大祭司若違犯了某條律法,就要獻上一隻無殘疾的牛犢;
He commands that if the high priest has transgressed some law, he shall sacrifice an unblemished calf;
1:2177
要把我們前面所說的部分獻在祭壇上;
and that he offer at the altar the things we have already mentioned;
1:2178
but that the flesh and the hide, together with the dung, be burned outside the camp.
1:2179
This signifies that sin is a stranger to the sacred precincts.
1:2180
若全體百姓也曾擅敢犯下這樣的過犯,他就立法要獻上同樣的祭,藉此教導祭司職分的尊榮何等重大;
And when the whole people has dared to commit some such transgression, he has legislated that the same sacrifice be offered, teaching how great is the honor of the priesthood;
1:2181
for he has set it in the balance as equal in weight to the whole people.
1:2182
But he ordained that the ruler, when he has transgressed some law, offer not a calf but a he-goat, that is, a kid a year old.
1:2183
By so much does the one entrusted with bodily rule fall short of the dignity of the high priesthood. And for the one who is neither priest nor ruler, but has sinned, he ordained that he sacrifice a she-goat.
1:2184
For the male is fitting for the ruler, and the female for the one ruled, as we have said before.
1:2185
Concerning one who intends to offer something to God, and confirms the promise by an oath, but does not match the deed to the word:
1:2186
He commands him first to confess the sin, and then to offer either a ewe-lamb or a she-goat, and in this manner to propitiate God.
1:2187
But if he is poor, he commands him to offer either two turtledoves or two young pigeons.
1:2188
And if he cannot afford even these, he is to bring a small measure of fine flour, without oil and frankincense.
1:2189
因為油乃是喜樂的表徵;
For oil is indicative of gladness;
1:2190
but sin has been stripped bare of both.
1:2191
他極其恰當地將「觸摸不潔之物」與「起誓後說謊之人隱瞞己罪」這兩件事並列在一起;
He has very fittingly joined together the touching of what is unclean and the concealment, by one who has sworn and lied, of his sin;
1:2192
因為潔淨的人若觸摸不潔之物,就被玷污了;
for indeed the clean person who touches unclean things is defiled;
1:2193
而未曾親自起假誓的人,若不揭發那謊言,也就與說謊者同分擔那罪;
and one who has not himself sworn falsely nevertheless shares in the sin with the one who lied, if he does not expose the falsehood;
1:2194
It is worthy of admiration, the goodness of the Master, in that he does not punish the one who has promised to offer something and has ratified the promise by an oath, yet has not fulfilled it in deed, either as ungrateful or as a perjurer, but heals him with a light penalty.
1:2195
What is the meaning of, 'If a soul forgets through forgetfulness and sins unwittingly concerning the holy things of the Lord'? It often happened that someone, falling into some preoccupation, failed to bring at the proper time the things dedicated to God, such as the firstborn, or the firstfruits, or the votive offerings.
1:2196
He therefore subjects the one who has fallen into this offense to a greater penalty.
1:2197
因為他吩咐這人,首先要償清欠神的債,在其應有的價值上,另加五分之一;
For he commands him first to pay off the debt owed to God, adding a fifth to its fair value;
1:2198
and then, in this way, for the trespass, to offer for the sacrifice a ram worth fifty shekels, and thus to receive forgiveness of the sin.
1:2199
他既為無意中犯罪的人立下了這些以及類似的律例,也吩咐那些故意犯罪的人——無論是接受了寄託之物卻加以否認,或行了某種不義之事,又以假誓加重了自己的罪——都要先將所不義奪取的歸還受害之人,並在本金上另加五分之一;
Having legislated these things and others like them concerning those who have sinned unwittingly, he also commands that those who have sinned willingly — whether by receiving a deposit and then lying about it, or by committing some injustice, and increasing their sin with a false oath — must first restore to those wronged what they unlawfully took, adding a fifth to the principal;
1:2200
and then, in this way, to offer a ram and propitiate God.
1:2201
這也是蒙福的撒該所行的;
This the blessed Zacchaeus also did;
1:2202
因為他先將自己所訛詐的,四倍償還;
for he first restored fourfold what he had wrongfully taken;
1:2203
and then, in this way, distributed half of his possessions to the poor.
1:2204
so that they might know that those who are healed through repentance are not strangers to holy things.
1:2205
For this reason he also called these things 'holy of holies.'
1:2206
「凡摸這祭肉的都要成為聖」,這是什麼意思呢?他藉此教導人存敬畏之心,吩咐人要懷著敬畏來到聖物面前,並規定人要遠遠站立在聖物之外;
What is the meaning of, 'Everyone who touches its flesh shall be sanctified'? He teaches them reverence, and commands them to approach the divine things with awe, and ordains that they stand far off from the sacred things;
1:2207
but the one who dares to draw near, and thereupon receives a drop of the blood, he commands to remain in attendance at the temple, as no longer being master of himself.
1:2208
He is to remain in attendance, not performing the priestly rites, but carrying out the other services.
1:2209
為此,他也吩咐,凡沾染了那血滴的衣服都要洗淨;
For this reason he also commands that the garments which have received drops of that blood be washed;
1:2210
至於器皿,若是銅器,就要仔細擦拭潔淨;
and as for the vessels, if they are of bronze, that they be carefully scoured;
1:2211
but if they are of earthenware, that they be broken.
1:2212
為此,他吩咐要在第一日與第二日食用那肉;
For this reason he commands that on the first day and the second day one is to partake of that flesh;
1:2213
剩下的就要焚燒;
but that what remains over is to be burned;
1:2214
so that, driven by this necessity, they might have the poor as sharers in the feast.
1:2215
For if things that are natural defile according to the law, how much more do things of deliberate choice, which are properly called unlawful.
1:2216
What follows attests to the manner of this.
1:2217
因為他既吩咐一切脂油都要獻在祭壇上,便將自死的和被野獸撕裂之牲畜的脂油,另外劃歸供人使用;
For having commanded that all fat be offered at the altar, he set apart for human use the fat of animals that had died of themselves or been torn by wild beasts;
1:2218
並稱這樣的東西為不潔淨的;
and he called such things unclean;
1:2219
unclean, therefore, was also the one who touched such a thing. It is evident from this as well, that he legislates one thing by means of another.
1:2220
The blood signifies the saving blood, and the oil the all-holy chrism/anointing.
1:2221
右耳是那當受稱讚之順從的表徵;
The right ear is a symbol of praiseworthy obedience;
1:2222
and the hand and the foot are symbols of good deeds.
1:2223
For this reason indeed it was the right hand and the right foot that were anointed.
1:2224
For there are also deeds of the left hand, so to speak, and obedience that is harmful.
1:2225
How is 'the strange fire' to be understood? The narrative has taught us that when the first sacrifice was offered, the victims were consumed by divine fire.
1:2226
主宰的神吩咐要保守這火常燃不滅,晝夜都要添柴供應這火;
The Master God commanded that this fire be kept unquenched, and that wood be supplied to it both night and day;
1:2227
so that man-made fire might not be mixed with the divine fire.
1:2228
Since, then, Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, transgressed this law and brought in man-made fire, the divine fire consumed them.
1:2229
我們藉這些事所受的教導,就是不可熄滅聖靈的感動,卻要將所領受的恩典重新點燃;
We, then, are instructed through these things not to quench the Spirit, but to rekindle the grace we have received;
1:2230
也不可將任何外來之物引入神聖的經文之中,卻當滿足於聖靈的教導,並要憎惡各樣異端——這些異端中,有些是將虛構的傳說加添在神聖的話語之上;
and to introduce nothing alien into the divine Scripture, but to be content with the teaching of the Spirit, and to abhor the heresies — of which some have added myths to the divine oracles;
1:2231
while others have preferred their own impious reasonings to the meaning intended by Scripture.
1:2232
For they served by turns, some on these days, others on other days.
1:2233
The Apostle also commands that the priest be sober, and that the deacons not be given to much wine.
1:2234
And writing to Timothy, he directed him to make use of a little wine on account of his frequent ailments.
1:2235
For it is fitting that the priest be mature/perfect, as one entrusted with intercession on behalf of the people.
1:2236
For instance, Moses the lawgiver, when he saw that the he-goat offered for sin had been wholly burnt contrary to the divine law, was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, saying:
1:2237
'Why did you not eat the sin offering in the holy place, seeing that it is most holy? The Lord gave this to you to eat, that you might take away the sin of the congregation and make atonement for them before the Lord.' And from this again we are taught that we, though eating what is offered by the people, if we do not live according to the law, nor earnestly offer prayers on their behalf, incur penalties before God.
1:2238
Hinting at this, the Master God said through the prophet:
1:2239
'They shall eat the sins of my people.'
1:2240
「分蹄且倒嚼」是什麼意思呢?我認為「分蹄」乃是表明分辨善行與其相反之事的能力;
What does 'having a cloven hoof and chewing the cud' signify? I think that 'having a cloven hoof' signifies the discernment between good deeds and their opposites;
1:2241
And in addition to this, that one should not live for the present life alone, but for the life to come as well;
1:2242
and to allot to the former only the necessities, but to the latter everything—that is, both the soul and the body and the things pertaining to the body.
1:2243
The 'chewing the cud' signifies the meditation on the divine oracles.
1:2244
For just as the sheep, and those like it, continually bring up their food again, so too the diligent and God-loving man cries out to the God of all:
1:2245
'O how I have loved your law, O Lord! It is my meditation all the day long.'
1:2246
正如動物中,有些分蹄且反芻,有些則兩者都不具備,如驢、騾、馬及各種野獸;
Now just as among animals some have a divided hoof and also chew the cud, while others do neither of these things, as the donkey, the mule, the horse, and the wild beasts;
1:2247
另有些雖分蹄卻不反芻,如豬;
and others have a divided hoof but do not chew the cud, as the pig;
1:2248
還有些雖反芻卻不分蹄,如駱駝和野兔;
and yet others chew the cud but do not have a divided hoof, as the camel and the hare;
1:2249
同樣,在人當中也可以看見這樣的情形:有完全人,既擁抱對神聖言語的默想,又殷勤追求德行;
so also among men one may find the perfect, who both embrace the meditation on the divine oracles and diligently pursue virtue;
1:2250
也有不完全人,只用口舌宣講神聖言語,卻不能忍受「分蹄」,好似駱駝一般;
and the imperfect, who utter the divine oracles with the tongue but cannot endure to 'divide the hoof,' resembling the camel;
1:2251
but who are concerned only with praiseworthy actions,
1:2252
and yet others who are bereft of faith and utterly stripped of good action.
1:2253
至於水中生物,他說凡有鱗有鰭的為潔淨;
Of aquatic creatures, he says that those having scales and fins are clean;
1:2254
for these swim upon the surface of the waters.
1:2255
for those that are not of this kind wallow below in the mud.
1:2256
So also among rational beings, the clean are those who are not glued to earthly things, but who have the wings of faith and are fenced about with the covering of virtue.
1:2257
因為魚鱗對魚而言是甚麼,德行的全副軍裝對人而言就是甚麼;
For what the scale is to fish, this the full armor of virtue is to men;
1:2258
and what the fins are to them, this faith is to men.
1:2259
這些正是蒙福的保羅所賦予我們的,他稱之為恩典的翅膀和聖靈的兵器;至於飛鳥,他說,不潔的乃是猛禽、食腐之鳥,以及喜愛黑暗的鳥類;
These the blessed Paul confers upon us, calling them the wings of grace and the weapons of the Spirit; and of birds, he says, the unclean are the birds of prey and those that feed on carrion, and those that delight in darkness;
1:2260
teaching us both to abstain from greed, and to turn away from the foul-smelling food of sin, and to hate darkness.
1:2261
我們如此理解這些事並非毫無根據,這一點可由《使徒行傳》的記載作證;
That we have not understood these matters to be so without reason, the narrative of the Acts bears witness;
1:2262
因為經上說,蒙福的彼得看見一塊布,繫著四角縋下來,裡面有地上各樣四足的走獸和天空的飛鳥;
For, it says, the blessed Peter saw a sheet let down by its four corners, in which were all the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the birds of heaven;
1:2263
and he heard a voice saying:
1:2264
'Rise, Peter, kill and eat.'
1:2265
Then, when he had said, 'By no means, Lord, for I have never eaten anything common or unclean,' the Master God said:
1:2266
'What God has cleansed, do not you call common.'
1:2267
That these things were said for the sake of Cornelius, who was a Gentile and was seeking salvation, is made clear by what follows.
1:2268
And the Lord also said to the apostles:
1:2269
'Many will come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.'
1:2270
And to the elders of the Ephesians:
1:2271
'I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you.'
1:2272
And the prophets also call horses 'lustful after females,' and serpents 'offspring of flying asps.'
1:2273
'The kingdom of heaven is like a net cast into the sea, gathering fish of every kind.'
1:2274
'And wherever the carcass is, there the eagles will be gathered together.'
1:2275
This interpretation, then, is in harmony with the intent of the divine Scripture.
1:2276
We, then, derive this benefit from these things.
1:2277
But to the Jews, through these very same things, he has furnished another kind of benefit.
1:2278
因為他把陸地動物、飛鳥和水族都分為兩類;
For having divided into two both the land animals, and the birds, and the aquatic creatures;
1:2279
and having called some unclean and others clean, he persuades them to regard none of these as God.
1:2280
因為凡有理智的人,怎麼會把不潔之物稱為神呢?那是他所憎惡、避而遠之的東西;又怎麼會把獻給真神、並蒙祂悅納享用之物稱為神呢?再者,若有不潔之物掉進瓦器裡,他就命令將瓦器打碎,但若掉進銅器、木器、麻袋或衣服裡,卻只命令用水洗淨,這又是為甚麼呢?由此可見,沒有一樣東西本質上是不潔的,而是出於某種緣故,他才把一些稱為不潔,一些稱為潔淨;
For how could any man of sound mind call 'God' either the unclean thing, which he loathes and turns away from, or the thing that is offered to the true God and eaten by him? Why is it, then, that if any of the unclean things should fall into an earthen vessel, he commands that it be broken, but if into a bronze or wooden vessel, or a sack, or a garment, that it be washed with water? And from this it is clear that nothing is unclean by nature, but that for a certain reason he called some things unclean and others clean;
1:2281
for if they were unclean by nature, then the bronze vessels and the wooden ones ought also to have been broken.
1:2282
但因為他稱之為不潔另有緣故,所以他吩咐:價值較高的器皿要清洗,價廉的則要打碎;
But since he called them unclean for another reason, he commands that those vessels worthy of greater value be washed, while the cheap ones be broken;
1:2283
如此一來,一方面鞏固了有關不潔之物的律法;
in this way confirming the law concerning the unclean;
1:2284
and in that way indicating the purpose of the law.
1:2285
For this very reason he also commands that an oven and a cooking-stove be destroyed, if any of these creatures should fall into them, and he calls the water in vessels unclean when a carcass has fallen into it,
1:2286
但泉水卻不然,池水也不然;
but not spring water any longer, nor water in a cistern;
1:2287
for he limits such matters to small penalties.
1:2288
我們則從中再次學到:罪是何等大的惡;
And we, in turn, learn how great an evil sin is;
1:2289
for it is to sin that true defilement is truly attributed.
1:2290
他特別指出,凡用肚腹爬行的都是不潔的;
He especially says that those creatures which crawl on their belly are unclean;
1:2291
for the serpent is the originator of evil, and the minister of the devil's plot.
1:2292
For often he teaches one thing by means of another, and this is easy to learn from what follows.
1:2293
For if the woman who has given birth is unclean, and the pregnant woman is unclean, I think, then, that the law commands her to rest, since she has labored exceedingly and has endured bitter birth-pangs.
1:2294
但倘若他只是這樣直白地宣告,做丈夫的恐怕就不能克制自己的情慾;
But if he had simply declared this outright, husbands would not have restrained their desire;
1:2295
but being taught that she is unclean, they avoid intercourse, lest they should partake of the uncleanness.
1:2296
The law, therefore, quenches desire by means of the pretext of uncleanness.
1:2297
至於日數上的差異,有人這樣解釋:婦女生女孩時所忍受的痛苦更多;
As for the difference in the number of days, some have interpreted it thus: that women endure greater pain when giving birth to female children;
1:2298
therefore he allotted to them double the time for rest.
1:2299
And through involuntary things he condemns the voluntary.
1:2300
For if things that are natural seem in some way to be unclean, much more so are things that arise from deliberate choice.
1:2301
他也提到痲瘋的區別;
He also speaks of a distinction of leprosy;
1:2302
因為罪過之間也有等次之別;
since there is also a distinction among sins;
1:2303
and there is a beginning of leprosy, since there is also a beginning of sin.
1:2304
But just as the priest discerns the leprosy, so also must he be the judge of the sins of the soul.
1:2305
膚色斑駁不一的,就稱為「痲瘋」;
That which is variegated in color is called 'leprous';
1:2306
thus when vice comes upon the soul, it renders it leprous.
1:2307
正如他先前論到屍體時所宣告的:若掉進器皿中,器皿便是不潔的;
For just as he declared concerning the carcass, that if it should fall into a vessel, the vessel is unclean;
1:2308
但若掉進泉源或水池,就不再是這樣;
but if into a spring or a cistern, it is no longer so;
1:2309
照樣,他也把膚色斑駁者與其他人分別開來,因為這樣的人仍存著得潔淨的盼望;
so also he separates from the others the one who has received a variegated color, as one who has hope of cleansing;
1:2310
but the one who has become entirely white, he commands to mingle again with the others, lest he should spend his whole life separated from other men.
1:2311
This too is a type of spiritual realities.
1:2312
因為對於犯罪的信徒,神聖的律法甚至不准與之同席共食;
For the divine law commands that one not even eat together with the faithful who sin,
1:2313
but it does not forbid dining together with unbelievers who invite one to a feast.
1:2314
And the divine apostle speaks thus:
1:2315
'If any of the unbelievers invites you, and you wish to go, eat whatever is set before you, asking no questions,' and so on.
1:2316
But concerning the faithful who sin he said as follows:
1:2317
'If anyone called a brother is a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a drunkard, or a reviler, or an extortioner, with such a one do not even eat.'
1:2318
'Withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks disorderly.'
1:2319
This one, then, resembles the man who is partly leprous, while the unbeliever resembles one who has lost his whole natural color.
1:2320
But with these we both converse and associate;
1:2321
and the divine apostle is witness to this:
1:2322
他說:『我曾寫信給你們,不可與淫亂的人相交』;
'For I wrote to you,' he says, 'not to associate with fornicators' —
1:2323
and not at all meaning the fornicators of this world, or the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, but 'if anyone called a brother,' and so on.
1:2324
He has, however, called clean the one who has become entirely white, not as having a healthy body, but as no longer defiling, according to the law, those who come near him.
1:2325
Thus the apostle spoke concerning those who sin:
1:2326
'Withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks disorderly, and not according to the tradition which you received from us;'
1:2327
'and if anyone called a brother is a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a drunkard, or a reviler, or an extortioner, with such a one do not even eat.'
1:2328
衣服上怎會生痲瘋? 神曾降下許多這樣的懲戒於他們身上;
How did leprosy occur in garments? God brought many such chastisements upon them;
1:2329
at any rate, he also spoke thus concerning leprous houses:
1:2330
'When you enter the land of the Canaanites, which I give to you, and I put a mark of leprosy in the houses of the land you possess,' and so on.
1:2331
By this he teaches that these were plagues sent by God, coming to rest now upon garments, now upon houses.
1:2332
And these things reveal the ineffable loving-kindness of God.
1:2333
For when men sinned, he brought the plagues upon their garments and houses, thereby offering healing to those who owned them.
1:2334
The house of Israel resembles a leprous house, from which those who had transgressed were often removed, like certain leprous stones—at one time by the Assyrians, at another by the Babylonians, and at yet another by the Macedonians.
1:2335
But since the leprosy had become fixed, the lawgiver commanded that the house be utterly demolished.
1:2336
Unclean, then, are those who enter their synagogues, as one entering a leprous house.
1:2337
What do the two small birds offered on behalf of the leper being cleansed signify? It contains the type of the saving Passion.
1:2338
For just as, of these birds, the one was sacrificed while the other, dipped in the blood of the one that had been sacrificed, was set free, so on behalf of leprous humanity the Master Christ was crucified, the flesh receiving death while the Godhead made the suffering of the humanity its own.
1:2339
又正如那被宰殺之小鳥的血,摻入清水中,藉著香柏木、牛膝草和撚成的朱紅線,灑在痲瘋病人身上,使他顯為潔淨光亮;
And just as, when the blood of the slain bird was mixed with pure water and, by means of cedar wood and hyssop and spun scarlet, was sprinkled upon the leper, he was declared bright and clean,
1:2340
so he who believes in Christ the Savior, and is cleansed by the water of most holy baptism, casts off the stains of his sins.
1:2341
香柏木是不受苦之神性的表徵;
The cedar wood is a symbol of the impassible Godhead;
1:2342
for this wood does not decay.
1:2343
撚成的朱紅線,是由靈魂與身體所組成之人性的表徵;
and the spun scarlet, of humanity composed of soul and body;
1:2344
and the hyssop, of the warmth and sweet fragrance of the most holy Spirit.
1:2345
For it is through these things that those who are baptized are delivered from leprosy of the soul.
1:2346
And the cup of oil, too, signifies the spiritual chrism.
1:2347
塗在右耳、右手和右腳上的油,表明聽覺當專歸於正直的言語,手和腳當專歸於正直的行為;
The oil anointed upon the right ear, the right hand, and the right foot shows that hearing is to be set apart for upright words, and the hand and foot for upright deeds;
1:2348
and being poured also upon the head, it signifies the consecration of the rational faculty.
1:2349
至於那仍然患痲瘋的人,就住在營外;
He, however, who remained a leper dwelt outside the camp,
1:2350
just as one who sins without repenting is cast out of the Church.
1:2351
For if the discharge that occurs according to nature is unclean, much more is unlawful lust.
1:2352
And again he teaches us to flee the company of such persons.
1:2353
For he said that the one who comes near a person with a discharge is unclean.
1:2354
But that nothing which occurs according to nature is truly unclean, the law itself makes plain.
1:2355
因為若患漏症的人摸了瓦器,律法便吩咐要把那瓦器打碎;
For if the man with a discharge should touch an earthen vessel, it commands that it be broken;
1:2356
but if he touch one of bronze or of wood, that it be washed clean with water.
1:2357
Yet these too ought to have been broken like the earthen vessels, if indeed the man to whom this affliction happened were truly unclean.
1:2358
他照樣說,夢遺的人也是不潔淨的,並且按律法結合的夫妻亦然;
So too he says that the man with a nocturnal emission is unclean, and likewise those joined by the law of marriage—
1:2359
and yet it was he himself who established the law concerning marriage, indeed the very first law.
1:2360
'For this cause,' he says, 'a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.'
1:2361
How then does he call unclean the one who unites according to the law? But it is clear that he thereby teaches moderation even in lawful union, and commands that intercourse take place for the sake of procreation, not for the love of pleasure.
1:2362
為此,他稱交合的人為不潔淨;
For this reason he calls those who unite unclean,
1:2363
and commands that they be purified, so that the trouble attending the purification might restrain the frequency of intercourse.
1:2364
But the divine apostle writes to the perfect:
1:2365
'Marriage is honorable, and the bed undefiled;
1:2366
but fornicators and adulterers God will judge.'
1:2367
And besides this, it was also so that no one might unite with such women.
1:2368
For some say that from such intercourse both deformity and leprosy are engendered, that residue harming the bodies being formed.
1:2369
For this reason he says that the one who unites with such a woman is unclean.
1:2370
And he briefly taught the reasons for such laws, saying:
1:2371
...them—my tabernacle that is among them.
1:2372
But if he said that involuntary things defile, it is clear that voluntary ones are far more accursed.
1:2373
And these provisions were especially fitting for those who were most lustful and wantonly wicked.
1:2374
For what was transgressed was no great matter, and, when observed, it made them better fitted for what is perfect.
1:2375
When did the high priest enter the Holy of Holies? On the Day of Atonement, which God commanded to be kept on the tenth day of the seventh month.
1:2376
For the Lord, he says, spoke to Moses:
1:2377
'Speak to Aaron your brother, and let him not enter at every hour into the holy place within the veil, before the mercy seat which is upon the ark of the testimony, lest he die;
1:2378
for I will appear in a cloud upon the mercy seat.'
1:2379
由此可見,主神正是在施恩座上顯現自己;
From this it is clear that it was at the mercy seat that the Master, God, made his own appearing;
1:2380
and, manifesting his own goodness, he was seen not in darkness and smoke and fire, as to Israel, but in a luminous cloud.
1:2381
He also taught the manner of the sacrifices which the high priest had to employ before he could venture into the inner sanctuary.
1:2382
因為他吩咐要獻一頭牛犢作贖罪祭,又要獻一隻公羊作全燔祭;
For he commanded him to sacrifice a calf for sin, and to offer a ram as a whole burnt offering;
1:2383
and these he was to offer on his own behalf, but on behalf of the whole people he was to take two goats for sin, and one ram for a whole burnt offering.
1:2384
He also commanded that the goats be divided by lot, and that the one be sacrificed, and the other be sent away into the wilderness.
1:2385
Now some, having foolishly understood this, supposed that the goat that is sent away was some demon, since it says:
1:2386
one for the Lord, and one for the [goat] that is sent away.
1:2387
But they assumed this out of great foolishness.
1:2388
For how could it be possible that he who had said,
1:2389
You shall have no other gods besides me, and you shall neither worship nor serve another god -- should assign an equal sacrifice to some demon? They ought rather to have set their mind on the fact that he commanded even the goat that was released to be offered to himself.
1:2390
For it says: You shall take the living goat before the Lord, to make atonement over it, to send it away into the wilderness as a dismissal.
1:2391
This shows that the goat itself was called the one sent away, as being sent away into the wilderness; for what follows also makes this clear:
1:2392
and the goat shall bear upon itself their iniquities into the impassable land.
1:2393
And Symmachus likewise interpreted the one sent away as follows:
1:2394
for a goat that departs, so as to send it away for dismissal.
1:2395
And Aquila: for a goat released into the wilderness.
1:2396
因此,牠並不是被送給某個神明或鬼魔,而是兩隻公山羊都是獻給神的;
It was not, therefore, sent away to some god or demon, but both were offered to God;
1:2397
and while the one was being sacrificed, the other, bearing the sins of the people, was sent away into the wilderness.
1:2398
For just as, in the case of a leper being cleansed, when one bird was sacrificed, the other was dipped in its blood and set free, so also, when two goats were offered for the sins of the people, the one was sacrificed and the other sent away.
1:2399
這些又都是主基督的預表;
These again are types of the Lord Christ,
1:2400
these two animals being taken not as referring to two persons, but to two natures.
1:2401
For since it was not possible for both the mortal and the immortal nature of the Lord Christ to be adumbrated in one goat -- for a goat is only mortal -- he necessarily commanded that two be brought forward,
1:2402
使被宰殺的那隻預表肉體的受苦性;
so that the one being sacrificed might prefigure the passibility of the flesh,
1:2403
and the one being released might signify the impassibility of the divinity.
1:2404
O God, when you went forth before your people, when you passed through the wilderness, the earth was shaken;
1:2405
for indeed the heavens dropped rain.
1:2406
We have been taught that when the Lord Christ was crucified, the earth was shaken and the rocks were split, while heaven, through the darkening of the sun, signified the excess of that impiety.
1:2407
And the wilderness is indeed a type of death,
1:2408
when you passed through the wilderness.
1:2409
但誰也不要以為,用公山羊來預表救主的受難是不相稱的,儘管偉大的約翰稱祂為羔羊;
But let no one suppose it unfitting that a goat should prefigure the Saviour's passion, since the great John called him a lamb;
1:2410
let him rather consider that he offered himself not only on behalf of the righteous, but also on behalf of sinners.
1:2411
The Lord himself made this very comparison,
1:2412
for he said, He will set the lambs on his right hand, and the goats on his left.
1:2413
And in the Law also a kid was offered for sin.
1:2414
The Lord himself, indeed, called the bronze serpent a type of himself:
1:2415
for he says, As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but have eternal life.
1:2416
If, then, the type of the goats is unfitting, much more so is that of the serpent.
