1:1000
He would not have given him this promise, had He not deemed abundance of offspring to be the greatest good.
1:1001
For what reason, then, were the women jealous of one another? They were the daughters of an imperfect and impious man, one who called carved images gods.
1:1002
正因如此,神在立法時禁止這樣的婚姻;
For this reason God, in legislating, forbids such a marriage;
1:1003
for He says, ‘You shall not take a wife in addition to her sister, to be a rival to her.’
1:1004
因此,不僅要留意所說的話,也要留意說話者本人的身分;
One must therefore attend not only to the word spoken, but also to the person of the one speaking;
1:1005
所以,「我真幸運」這句話,並非雅各所說,而是他妻子利亞所說;如我方才所言,她原是在不敬虔中長大,逐漸才受教於神聖的道理;
the word 'I have had good fortune,' then, is not a saying of Jacob, but of his wife Leah, who, as I said, had been raised in impiety and was only by degrees being instructed in divine things;
1:1006
so also her father said, ‘I have learned by divination,’ but the divine law forbids the use of omens.
1:1007
因此,切莫有人以為這類話語就是神聖經文本身的教訓;
Let no one, then, suppose that such words belong to the divine Scripture itself;
1:1008
因為作者只是如實記錄不敬虔之人所說的話,正因他所寫的是歷史;
for the writer sets down what was said by the impious, inasmuch as he is composing a history;
1:1009
thus the most divine Moses also set down Pharaoh's blasphemous word:
1:1010
‘I do not know the Lord, and I will not send Israel away.’
1:1011
But this word is not that of the divine Spirit, but of the impious king.
1:1012
So again we hear Sennacherib saying:
1:1013
‘Do not let your God, in whom you trust, deceive you, saying that the Lord will deliver Jerusalem out of my hand.’ Yet from this we do not learn to blaspheme, but rather to condemn blasphemies.
1:1014
But Jacob himself also said to Laban:
1:1015
因為他把「來臨」稱為「腳蹤」;
for he called his coming 'foot';
1:1016
意即:「因著我的到來,並我的照顧眷顧,你才享受了神所賜的美物」;
that is, instead of saying, 'through my coming and my care you have enjoyed God-given goods';
1:1017
for God, looking upon my piety, deemed all that was entrusted to me by you worthy of every blessing.
1:1018
他為何削去枝條的皮,放在羊喝水的地方呢?正如他娶妻是渴望生兒育女,但他並不是把生育的盼望寄託在婚姻本身,而是寄託在那為婚姻立法的神身上;
For what reason did he peel the rods and set them before the sheep as they drank? Just as he had taken wives desiring to beget children, yet he did not place his hope of begetting children in the marriage itself, but in God, the lawgiver of marriage;
1:1019
so also he peeled the rods, not trusting in them, but waiting upon divine assistance.
1:1020
Wherefore he also obtained a divine appearance, and heard Him saying:
1:1021
‘Lift up your eyes and see the he-goats and rams mounting the she-goats, striped and speckled and ashen-spotted;’
1:1022
‘for I have seen all that Laban is doing to you.’
1:1023
‘I am the God who appeared to you in the place of God, where you anointed a pillar to me, and where you vowed a vow to me.’
1:1024
因為那些灰色和有斑點的牲畜,已經交由拉班的兒子們照管,並且他們的羊群與這邊相距三天的路程;
For since the grey and speckled animals had been entrusted to the sons of Laban, and their flocks were three days' journey away from these;
1:1025
the champion of the wronged shows him speckled rams and he-goats mating, so that by this experience he might learn how great a providence those who have put their trust in the God of all enjoy.
1:1026
值得特別留意的是:經文一方面稱那先前顯現者為「使者」,另一方面又顯明同一位就是神;
It is fitting to note that, having called the one who appeared above 'angel,' the text also showed the same one to be God;
1:1027
for He says, ‘I am the God who appeared to you on the way.’
1:1028
他看見眾使者藉著那階梯上去下來,而主卻穩立在上頭;
He saw angels ascending and descending by the ladder, but the Lord standing firm above;
1:1029
在此,他既稱這一位為使者,又稱祂為神;
this one he here named both angel and God;
1:1030
God, since He is this by nature; and angel, so that we may know that it was not the Father who appeared, but the only-begotten Son.
1:1031
因為父豈能作誰的使者呢?惟獨子,既是神,又是那「大能謀士」的使者;
For of whom could the Father be a messenger? But the Son is both God and the Messenger of Great Counsel;
1:1032
因為正是祂向我們宣告了父的奧祕;
for it is He who announced to us the mysteries of the Father;
1:1033
for He says, ‘What I heard from my Father, I have made known to you.’
1:1034
Thus he also called the one who called Abraham both angel and God.
1:1035
偷竊偶像的用意何在?有些人說,拉結之所以偷走它們,是因為她內心仍舊眷戀著它們;
What was the purpose of the theft of the idols? Some have said that Rachel, still being attached to them, stole them;
1:1036
然而我卻認為恰恰相反:她之所以偷走它們,乃是為了要使自己的父親也脫離迷信;
but I suppose the opposite: that, wishing to free her father also from superstition, she carried them off;
1:1037
因為神聖的經文正教導我們,她是何等虔誠;
for the divine Scripture teaches us her piety;
1:1038
for it says, ‘God remembered Rachel, and God listened to her, and opened her womb.’
1:1039
for having heard from Jacob, ‘Am I in the place of God, who has deprived you of the fruit of the womb?’ it is clear that she offered to God a more earnest prayer, and obtained her request.
1:1040
而且,她生產之後,也顯明了自己的虔誠;
And indeed, having given birth, she also manifested her piety;
1:1041
‘God has taken away my reproach;’
1:1042
and she called his name Joseph, saying:
1:1043
‘May God add to me another son.’
1:1044
既然她對神懷有這樣的心志,又怎會容忍自己去服事那些並非真神的假神呢?而且我認為,由此還可以看出另一件事;
How then, holding such a disposition toward God, could she have borne to be enslaved to gods that are not gods? And I think that something else is also indicated by this;
1:1045
因為雅各乃是萬有之神的預表;
for Jacob bore the type of the God of all;
1:1046
因為神同樣也有兩個子民:年長的那一個,心上蒙著帕子;
for God likewise had two peoples: the elder, having a veil upon the heart;
1:1047
and the younger, clothed about with the beauty of faith.
1:1048
而雅各也有兩個妻子;
And Jacob had two wives;
1:1049
Leah, who had weak eyes, and Rachel, who was beautiful in form and exceedingly fair to look upon; and the elder was fruitful in children, but the younger was barren.
1:1050
因為出於外邦的教會,昔日也是不育的,但此後卻變得多子多孫;
For the church gathered from the Gentiles was also barren of old, but afterward became fruitful in children;
1:1051
For, he says, 'Rejoice, O barren one who does not bear; break forth and cry aloud, you who are not in labor.'
1:1052
for the children of the desolate woman are many, more than of her who has a husband.
1:1053
Since, then, the church, having come to believe in God the Savior, tore out by the root the ancestral error, and Rachel happened to be a type of her, she stole her father’s idols, so that even by this she might sketch out beforehand something of the truth.
1:1054
What is the meaning of 'Jacob swore by the fear of his father Isaac'? He called piety 'the fear of Isaac,' that is, the God whose fear he carried about in his soul.
1:1055
For this very reason he also granted him the victory, as if to say:
1:1056
「你已勝過了我,難道還怕一個人麼?」然而,為了不使他因自以為勝過了神而心高氣傲,神便藉著觸摸他的大腿,顯明那次失敗乃是出於自願;
'You have conquered me, and do you fear a man?' But so that he might not think great things of himself, supposing he had conquered God, by the touch upon his thigh he made known that the defeat was voluntary;
1:1057
for by that touch he produced the numbness.
1:1058
雅各既知道了那顯現者的能力,便求他祝福;
And having recognized the power of the one who had appeared, he asked for the blessing;
1:1059
那位不但應允了他的請求,也更改了他的名字;
and he both granted the request and changed his name;
1:1060
'For,' he says, 'your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name, because you have prevailed with God, and you shall be mighty with men.'
1:1061
And he also showed the cause of the victory:
1:1062
'Do not fear man,' he says, 'since it is I who have granted you the victory.'
1:1063
And even after he awoke, his thigh remained numb and limping, so that he would not suppose the vision to have been a mere fancy, but might know more exactly the truth of the dream.
1:1064
因此,當雅各詢問那位的名字時,他不僅未得回答,反倒受了責備,因他已超越了本性的限度;
For this reason too, when he asked what name he bore, he not only failed to obtain his request, but was even rebuked, as having overstepped the bounds of his nature;
1:1065
'Why,' he says, 'do you ask my name?' And this too is a wonder.
1:1066
在此也應當注意,經文既稱同一位為人,也稱他為神;
And here too one must note that scripture called the very same one both man and God;
1:1067
for, he said, 'you have prevailed with God.'
1:1068
And he called the name of that place 'the Form of God,'
1:1069
for he said, 'I saw God face to face, and my soul was preserved.'
1:1070
And the sun rose upon him when he had passed by the Form of God.
1:1071
And through all these things we learn that the Only-Begotten Son, who is also God, appeared here too to Jacob.
1:1072
「這是亞拿,他放他父親祭便的驢在曠野時,遇著了水(原文:雅民)」,這是什麼意思?敘利亞語譯本說他找到了一道泉水;
What is the meaning of 'This is Anah, who found the waters in the wilderness while he was pasturing the donkeys of Zibeon his father'? The Syrian version says that he found a spring;
1:1073
for a spring is called 'aina' in the tongue of the Syrians.
1:1074
約伯的家系出於何處?出於以掃;
From what stock does Job trace his lineage? From Esau;
1:1075
因為關於他的記載也是這樣教導的;
for this is also what the history concerning him teaches;
1:1076
for, it says, 'there was a man in the land of Ausitis.'
1:1077
蒙福的摩西也曾說明這一點;
The blessed Moses also made this clear;
1:1078
for in writing the succession of those who had reigned as kings from Esau, he spoke as follows:
1:1079
'And Balak died, and Jobab son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his place.'
1:1080
And these things agree with the account concerning Job.
1:1081
他們見他受父親特別看重,便心生嫉妒;
They were envious, then, seeing him held in greater honor;
1:1082
起初,他們用種種毀謗,企圖使他在父親面前失寵;
and first they tried to put him in bad standing with their father, resorting to many slanders against him;
1:1083
but failing in that aim, they wished to kill him; then, taking counsel together, they sold him instead.
1:1084
那禾捆的夢乃是預示了後來因糧食之故而發生的下拜之事;
And the dream of the sheaves foreshadowed the obeisance that would come to pass on account of the grain;
1:1085
for having gone down into Egypt for the sake of obtaining grain, they bowed down according to the earlier prophecy.
1:1086
他瑪為何裝扮成妓女的模樣,欺騙她的公公?亞伯拉罕的家族因其所懷的虔敬而聲名極為顯赫;
Why in the world did Tamar, putting on the guise of a harlot, deceive her father-in-law? The family of Abraham had become exceedingly renowned on account of the piety it possessed;
1:1087
他瑪知道這一點,便急切地想要從那個家族生育子嗣;
Tamar, knowing this, was eager to bear children from that lineage;
1:1088
she sought the means of childbearing, since she was prevented from obtaining them openly.
1:1089
And besides this, she also convicts her father-in-law, in that he himself was not being chaste, while compelling her to be chaste.
1:1090
而他自己在審斷此事時,也表明了這一點;
And he himself, in passing judgment on the matter, made this plain;
1:1091
他一得知她懷了孕,便判她死罪;
for having learned that she was pregnant, he pronounced sentence of death against her;
1:1092
但當他得知她是因誰而懷孕時,便宣告她無罪,反倒定了自己的罪;
but when he learned by whom she had conceived, he declared her innocent, and condemned himself instead;
1:1093
for, he said, 'Tamar has been more justified than I, since I did not give her to Shelah my son.'
1:1094
至於他瑪這樣做是為了生育後嗣,並非貪圖情慾,接下來所發生的事便可證明;
And that Tamar contrived this for the sake of childbearing, and not out of love of pleasure, what follows makes clear;
1:1095
for she was never again joined either to Judah or to anyone else, but was content to be called the mother of the offspring that had sprung from that seed.
1:1096
謝拉與法勒斯的事所預示的是什麼?是兩個民族:法勒斯代表猶太人,謝拉代表信主的外邦人;
Of what were the events concerning Zerah and Perez a sign? Of the two peoples: Perez of the Jews, and Zerah of those from the nations who came to believe;
1:1097
因為即使在律法之先,也已有許多蒙虔敬養育的人,他們是憑信而非憑律法度日;
for indeed, even before the Law there were many who were nurtured in piety, ordering their lives according to faith, not according to Law;
1:1098
因此謝拉先伸出手來,表明律法之先的生活方式;
for this reason Zerah put forth his hand first, showing the manner of life that existed before the Law;
1:1099
而那條朱紅線乃是古時祭祀的預表;
and the scarlet thread was a sign of the ancient sacrifices;
1:1100
因為那些人也都是用祭物蒙神悅納的——亞伯、以諾、挪亞、麥基洗德、亞伯拉罕、以撒與雅各皆是如此;
for those men too propitiated God with sacrifices — Abel, and Enoch, and Noah, and Melchizedek, and Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob;
1:1101
隨後,謝拉把手縮回,法勒斯便先出來了;
then, when Zerah withdrew his hand, Perez came out first;
1:1102
for the Law stands in the middle between the time before the Law and the time after the Law.
1:1103
Wherefore also the blessed Paul says:
1:1104
'But the Law came in alongside,' teaching that even before the Law men were justified according to faith, and that after the Law grace shone forth.
1:1105
主按肉身而言,也是從法勒斯而出的;
And the Lord too, according to the flesh, sprang from Perez;
1:1106
for, he says, 'whose are the fathers, and from whom is the Christ according to the flesh, who is God over all.'
1:1107
因為顯然,我們的主耶穌基督乃是從猶大支派興起的;
For it is quite evident that our Lord Jesus Christ has arisen from Judah;
1:1108
this the blessed Matthew also taught when he wrote out the genealogy,
1:1109
so that they might not boast against those from the nations who had believed, as though they alone had kept their noble lineage unstained.
1:1110
且假設利亞因虔敬未臻完全,才說出「我很幸運」這樣的話;但那記史者在敘述約瑟的事時,為何又說「他是個亨通的人」呢?請讀前面所引的那句經文,你就會找到答案;
Let us grant that Leah, being imperfect in piety, said, 'I have had good fortune'; but how is it that the historian, in writing the account concerning Joseph, said, 'he was a man who prospered'? Read the statement placed just before, and you will find the solution;
1:1111
for having said, 'the Lord was with Joseph,' it then adds, 'and he was a man who prospered.'
1:1112
And it has further added, 'and he was in the house with his Egyptian master.'
1:1113
And his master knew that the Lord was with him, and that the Lord made prosperous whatever he did.
1:1114
因此他凡事順利,因為耶和華與他同在;
He therefore succeeded in everything, since the Lord was with him;
1:1115
for it was he himself who made prosperous the things that were done through him.
1:1116
在敘述監獄中的事時,經文也是這樣說的;
This too the narrator said when relating the events in the prison;
1:1117
for, it says, 'everything was done by the hand of Joseph, because the Lord was with him, and whatever he did, the Lord made to prosper in his hands.'
1:1118
御廚長既是太監,怎麼會有妻子呢?其實,人們常把「太監」(宮廷官員)與「閹人」以同一個名稱稱呼;
How is it that the chief cook, being a eunuch, had a wife? Now indeed they also call both eunuchs and castrated men by the same name;
1:1119
and it was nothing unreasonable for even one who was a eunuch to have a wife in his house, who took charge of the affairs within.
1:1120
Why is it that, though so long a time had passed, Joseph neither made known his enslavement to his father, nor did God reveal this to Jacob by any revelation? It was necessary, according to the prophecy made to Abraham, that Jacob should go down into Egypt together with his children and grandchildren.
1:1121
But if he had known Joseph's circumstances, he would certainly have sent ransom and brought him back.
1:1122
For this reason he overlooked him while he was despondent, so that he might both fulfill the dispensation and afterward make his life more pleasant.
1:1123
And Joseph himself teaches his brothers about God's dispensation:
1:1124
'For God,' he says, 'has sent me before you for life, to preserve a great people.'
1:1125
'And he called a famine upon the land; he broke every staff of bread; he sent a man before them—Joseph was sold as a slave,' and so on.
1:1126
但若這位族長知道自己兒子為奴的事,他必定會將他贖回;
But if the patriarch had known of his son's slavery, he would certainly have ransomed him;
1:1127
既蒙贖回,他就不會住在監牢裡;
and having been ransomed, he would not have dwelt in prison;
1:1128
他也不會為那些內臣解夢;
he would not have interpreted the dreams for those servants;
1:1129
若不解夢,他就不會被法老所認識;
and not having interpreted them, he would not have become known to Pharaoh;
1:1130
若未被人認識,他也不會將夢中的預言解說清楚;
and not having become known, he would not have made clear the prediction given through the dreams;
1:1131
若未曾如此行,他就不會被託付掌管埃及的政權;
and not having done this, he would not have been entrusted with the reins of Egypt;
1:1132
and not having received the rule of Egypt, he would not have brought the patriarch with his family into Egypt.
1:1133
From the outcome, therefore, the purpose of the divine dispensation becomes clear.
1:1134
Did the brothers, then, not sin, since they served a divine dispensation? Their deed was one of envy and jealousy; but God, being wise, turned their wickedness to the opposite end.
1:1135
For by the very means through which they tried to prevent the fulfillment of the dreams, through these he brought the dreams to their fulfillment.
1:1136
他為何一見到弟兄們,就立刻對他們相當嚴厲相待呢?因為他想起了自己曾遭受的事,又不見便雅憫在場,便猜疑便雅憫也曾遭他們同樣的害;
Why did he treat his brothers rather harshly as soon as he saw them? Remembering what had been done to him, and not seeing Benjamin, he suspected that he too had suffered the same things at their hands;
1:1137
but when he saw his brother alive, he deemed them worthy both of forgiveness and of every kind of care.
1:1138
What is the meaning of 'Psomthomphanech'? He called him 'interpreter of secrets,' since he had made clear the meaning of the dreams.
1:1139
Why did he order the second, and not the first, of the brothers to be confined? He knew Reuben's intention, and knew clearly how many words he had spoken to his brothers on his behalf, and how much zeal he had shown for his safety.
1:1140
既然西緬並未與流便同心協力,約瑟便極為公正地下令把他拘留起來;
Since, then, Simeon did not cooperate with Reuben, he very justly ordered him to be confined;
1:1141
but once the brothers had departed, he deemed him worthy of every attention.
1:1142
然而在這些事發生的同時,他們的良心卻無法安然沉默,反倒使他們想起了從前對那弟弟所犯的罪過;
Yet while these things were happening, their conscience would not allow them to keep silent, but reminded them of the transgression committed against their brother;
1:1143
for it says, 'each said to his brother':
1:1144
'Yes, we are guilty concerning our brother, because we saw the distress of his soul when he begged us, and we did not listen to him.'
1:1145
'Therefore this distress has come upon us.'
1:1146
And Reuben, too, brings forward his rebuke at the fitting moment:
1:1147
for it says, 'he said to them':
1:1148
'Did I not speak to you, saying, Do not wrong the boy—and you did not listen to me? And behold, his blood is now required.'
1:1149
由此可清楚知道良心那不偏不倚的審判力;
From this it is possible to know clearly the unswerving tribunal of conscience;
1:1150
for it reminds them of the transgression committed twenty-two years before.
1:1151
And he did not yet know how much zeal Reuben had shown on his behalf.
1:1152
「他用這個占卜」這句話是什麼意思?他們是想要加重那看似盜竊之罪的嚴重性,所以稱那杯為占卜之器;
What does 'he divines by divination with it' mean? Wishing to magnify the charge of the apparent theft, they call the cup an instrument of divination;
1:1153
and Joseph himself also said this:
1:1154
「你們豈不知像我這樣的人必能用占卜察知嗎?」他這樣說,並非因他真的行占卜、用鳥占之術,而是為配合眼前的情境而如此措辭;
'Do you not know that a man such as I can surely divine by divination?' But he said these things not because he actually practiced divination and augury, but shaping his words to fit the matter at hand;
1:1155
and it is worth admiring the precision of his words.
1:1156
因為即使在弟兄們面前裝作陌生人,他也不肯讓自己被說成是行占卜的人,而是將此歸給另一個擔任同樣職務的人;
For even while playing the role of a stranger to his brothers, he did not allow himself to be described as one who practices divination, but attributed it to some other person entrusted with the same office;
1:1157
for he did not say, 'I divine,' but 'a man such as I can surely divine.'
1:1158
他究竟為何要設計那關於銀杯的一場戲?他是想要試驗弟兄們的心意,清楚知道當便雅憫被誣陷時,他們是否會挺身為他辯護;
Why in the world did he stage the drama concerning the cup? He wished to test the disposition of his brothers, and to know clearly whether they would stand by Benjamin when he was falsely accused;
1:1159
and for this reason he hid the cup in that one's sack.
1:1160
當他看見他們不只是為便雅憫辯護,更是奮力為他抗爭時,他便卸下面具,顯出弟兄的真面目;
And when he saw that they were not merely pleading on his behalf but even fighting fiercely for him, he cast off the mask and revealed his brotherly face;
1:1161
and when they were terrified, and all but wished the earth would open for them, he himself encouraged them, saying:
1:1162
'Now therefore, do not be afraid, nor let it seem harsh to you that you sold me here.'
1:1163
'For God sent me before you for life.'
1:1164
And most graciously, when sending them off, he also exhorted them:
1:1165
'Do not be angry,' he says, 'on the way'—meaning, do not do such things as you dared to do against me.
1:1166
「……歸給君王?」因為在饑荒缺糧之時,他們既無法餵養牲畜,也無法耕種田地;
...to the king? For amid the food shortage and famine they were unable either to feed their cattle or to sow the land;
1:1167
於是他在饑荒之時取得了這些田地,後來又歸還給百姓,並立法規定要繳納收成的五分之一,使他們在缺乏之時能有生活的儲備;
Having taken these things, then, at the time of the famine, he later gave them back, establishing by law that a fifth of the produce should be contributed, so that in times of want they might have resources for life laid up;
1:1168
but for the service of the king, he left only the priestly land exempt from tax.
1:1169
Yet the priests of the true God do not enjoy this honor.
1:1170
So great was the reverence the impious rendered to gods that do not exist.
1:1171
And Joseph declared this teaching yet more clearly:
1:1172
'I am dying, but God will surely visit you, and will bring you up out of this land into the land which God swore to our fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.'
1:1173
And Joseph put the sons of Israel under oath, saying:
1:1174
'In the visitation with which God will visit you, you shall also carry up my bones from here with you'—so that it is clear that both the one and the other, in foretelling the return, gave commands concerning their burial.
1:1175
「以色列在他杖頭上敬拜」是什麼意思?由於他年紀老邁、身體衰弱,便躺臥在床上;
What is the meaning of, 'Israel worshipped upon the top of his staff'? Being an old man and in a weakened condition, he lay upon his bed;
1:1176
but on learning of his son's arrival, he rose up and sat.
1:1177
Using a staff, he leaned upon it, grasping its top with his right hand, and resting his face upon it.
1:1178
於是,他因約瑟而歡喜,也因得到關於安葬的應許而歡喜,便低頭靠在杖上敬拜;
Rejoicing, then, over him, and over the promise concerning his burial, he worshipped, bowing his head upon the staff;
1:1179
於是約瑟從前所做的夢,首先在此得到了應驗;
and first the dream of Joseph received its fulfillment;
1:1180
for he had seen the sun and the moon and eleven stars worshipping him.
1:1181
除此之外,他也預言了以法蓮支派將要興起王權,以及十個支派要臣服於它;
And in addition to this, he also foretells the kingship of the tribe of Ephraim, and the subjection of the ten tribes;
1:1182
for the divine apostle also said this:
1:1183
'By faith Jacob blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshipped upon the top of his staff.'
1:1184
他又賜給約瑟雙份的產業;
And he also gave him a double portion;
1:1185
for he says, 'Ephraim and Manasseh shall be to me as Reuben and Simeon.'
1:1186
他又出於預言性的洞見,把以法蓮排在瑪拿西之前;
And prophetically he placed Ephraim before Manasseh;
1:1187
for although Joseph, reserving the rights of the firstborn for Manasseh, had positioned each in proper order, the patriarch crossed his hands and placed his right hand upon the younger, and his left upon the elder.
1:1188
Then Joseph, supposing that Jacob had done this out of ignorance, and conjecturing that the affliction of his eyes was the cause, said:
1:1189
'Not so, father, for this one is the elder'; and he heard:
1:1190
'This one also shall become a people, and this one also shall be exalted; but his younger brother shall be greater than he.'
1:1191
But it should be noted that everywhere those who come after the firstborn are preferred to them.
1:1192
For indeed Abel was preferred to Cain, and Shem, though second, was preferred to Japheth.
1:1193
For it says, 'the brother of Japheth the elder.'
1:1194
And Isaac was preferred to Ishmael, and Jacob to Esau, and Joseph to Reuben and Judah, and Ephraim to Manasseh.
1:1195
One might find this also in what follows.
1:1196
The patriarch Jacob, however, taught the reason for this through his prophecy concerning his burial.
1:1197
For he says, 'Behold, I am dying, and God will be with you and will bring you back to the land of our fathers.'
1:1198
How is Jacob said to have blessed his sons, when he cursed some of them? The patriarch's final words are neither curses nor blessings, but prophecies.
1:1199
For he says, 'Gather together, that I may tell you what shall befall you in the last days.'
1:1200
He also called to mind what certain of them had done.
1:1201
Not because the descendants were being made to pay the penalty for their fathers' sins, but because he cast his words in the form of curse and blessing, for the common benefit of those who would afterward read them.
1:1202
To Reuben he imputes self-will and recklessness, and the drunken outrage he committed against his father's marriage-bed.
1:1203
For this reason he foretells that his descendants would become few.
1:1204
For this is what 'do not boil over like water' signifies, meaning: 'may you not be heated up into abundant offspring.'
1:1205
He is also indignant with Simeon and Levi, lamenting the unjust destruction of the Shechemites, and he prays that he might have no part in that transgression.
1:1206
He curses, however, not them themselves, but their wicked passions—their wrath, their rage.
1:1207
He called wrath 'desire.'
1:1208
For it is from this that wrath (ὀργή) derives its etymology.
1:1209
For the one who is angry longs to avenge himself upon his enemy.
1:1210
And this very punishment was itself a prophecy.
1:1211
For he says, 'I will divide them in Jacob and scatter them in Israel.'
1:1212
But the tribe of Levi was scattered on account of the highest honor, so that Levites and priests might be present with every tribe, and each tribe might reap the benefit derived from them.
1:1213
They received no allotment of their own, but in each tribe certain cities were assigned to them, together with a fixed number of cubits of surrounding pasture-land.
1:1214
The tribe of Simeon, too, had no allotment of its own, but in accordance with the patriarch's prophecy was scattered among the other tribes.
1:1215
Of Judah he recounts many praises.
1:1216
'Judah, may your brothers praise you.'
1:1217
'Your hands shall be on the neck of your enemies.'
1:1218
'Your father's sons shall bow down to you.'
1:1219
'From a shoot, my son, you have grown up; you lay down, you slept like a lion, and like a lion's cub.'
1:1220
'Who shall rouse him?' But none of this fits Judah himself; rather, it fits the tribe that sprang from him.
1:1221
And it was the mightiest of all the other tribes.
1:1222
Indeed, even when numbered in the wilderness, they were found to be more numerous than the other tribes.
1:1223
But the exact fulfillment of the prophecy came about in the Lord Christ, who arose from a shoot, according to the patriarch Jacob and according to the prophet Isaiah.
1:1224
'A rod came forth from the root of Jesse, and a flower rose up from the root.'
1:1225
'He lay down, he slept like a lion' fits him, and 'like a lion's cub' fits him as well.
1:1226
For just as the lion, even while sleeping, is fearsome, so the Lord's death became fearsome even to death itself and to the devil.
1:1227
He called him a lion and a lion's cub, as king and king's son, as God and Son of God.
1:1228
And 'who shall rouse him?' shows his ineffable power.
1:1229
For he raised himself, according to his own prophecy.
1:1230
'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.'
1:1231
He also foretells the time of his coming.
1:1232
'A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved, and he is the expectation of the nations.'
1:1233
This is the clearest sign of the Lord's coming.
1:1234
For among the Jews not only the kings failed, but also the high priests and the prophets, so that the fulfillment of the prophecy might be shown.
1:1235
For when our Savior was about to be born, foreign kings held sway over them, so that the eternal king might be shown to be the expectation of the nations, in accordance with the promise given by the God of all to the patriarchs.
1:1236
For indeed the God of all promised Abraham and Isaac and Jacob that in their seed he would bless all the nations of the earth.
1:1237
This is what the patriarch Jacob indicated here when he blessed Judah.
1:1238
'A ruler shall not fail from Judah, nor a leader from his loins, until he comes for whom it is reserved, and he is the expectation of the nations.'
1:1239
Then, showing the people formed from the nations and from the Jews.
1:1240
'Binding his foal to the vine, and to the tendril of the vine the foal of his donkey.'
1:1241
That Israel was called a vine, all the prophets teach.
1:1242
'You transplanted a vine out of Egypt,' and so forth.
1:1243
And Isaiah: 'A vineyard was made for the beloved one on a horn, in a fertile place.'
1:1244
And through Jeremiah the God of all said.
1:1245
'I planted you as a fruitful vine, entirely true.'
1:1246
'For their vine is of the vine of Sodom.'
1:1247
And the Lord in the holy Gospels.
1:1248
'A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it out to farmers, and went away on a journey.'
1:1249
He calls the people from the nations a 'foal,' as being untamed and never having had a colt-breaker.
1:1250
For this too the Lord hinted at to the apostles when he commanded them to go into the village opposite and untie the donkey that was tied, and her foal, on which, he says, no man had ever sat.
1:1251
For neither patriarch nor lawgiver nor prophet took thought for the salvation of the nations.
1:1252
But the divine apostles, having been commanded to make disciples of all the nations and to baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, untied the donkey—that is, the nature of mankind, bound by the chains of sin.
1:1253
They also untied the foal, the people that had sprung from her.
1:1254
And having placed their own garments upon it, that is, the grace which they had received.
1:1255
'For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.'
1:1256
And they made the untamed foal obedient to the rein, and set the Lord upon it, and bound it to the vine, that is, to themselves.
1:1257
For the apostles were from the Jews.
1:1258
And not only they, but also the seventy disciples, and the three thousand whom the first of the apostles caught all at once in his net, and the five thousand, and the many tens of thousands concerning whom the thrice-blessed James spoke to the most divine Paul.
1:1259
Not only, then, were those who had believed joined to the apostles, but also to the disciples of the apostles.
1:1260
And foreseeing this, the patriarch said.
1:1261
Binding his foal to the vine, and the foal of his donkey to the tendril of the vine
1:1262
Then he also foretells the Passion:
1:1263
'He will wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of the grape; his eyes are cheerful from wine, and his teeth are whiter than milk.'
1:1264
And he calls his body 'robe,' and his blood 'wine':
1:1265
since the Master himself also called the mystical wine 'blood':
1:1266
And we also hear the evangelist John teaching that when the soldier pierced his side, blood and water came out.
1:1267
And these streams flowed forth through the body:
1:1268
For this reason the patriarch says:
1:1269
'He will wash his robe in wine, and his garment in the blood of the grape.'
1:1270
Then he shows the gladness that would come after the Passion:
1:1271
'his eyes are cheerful from wine'
1:1272
For the saving Passion is the joy of the whole world:
1:1273
And that he called it 'the Passion' in this way, the Lord himself is witness, saying:
1:1274
'Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me.'
1:1275
So too he said to the sons of Zebedee:
1:1276
'Are you able to drink the cup that I am about to drink?' The 'cheerfulness' of the eyes, then, signifies the joy that would come after the Passion:
1:1277
for after the Passion and the resurrection, the disciples were sent into the whole world, bringing salvation to those who believe.
1:1278
And the clarity and transparency of the teaching he likened to the whitest teeth:
1:1279
for, he says, 'his teeth are whiter than milk.'
1:1280
族長在祝福猶大時,預先說了這許多話;
So much did the patriarch foretell in blessing Judah;
1:1281
論到西布倫,他預言了沿海而居的事;
and of Zebulun he foretold the coastal dwelling;
1:1282
and of Issachar, the tilling of the land:
1:1283
因為他正是出於這支派;
for he was of this tribe;
1:1284
and he was also numbered among the judges:
1:1285
and for this reason, he says, he said:
1:1286
But some say that he foretold the events concerning Laish, now called Paneas,
1:1287
for suddenly some, setting out from this tribe, attacked this city, took it by force, dwelt in it, and gave it their own name:
1:1288
But I think that the divine Spirit, having foretold beforehand through the patriarch the things concerning our Savior, also spoke through this prophecy the things concerning the Antichrist:
1:1289
and indeed the things written apply to him exceedingly well:
