1:3727
'This day I begin to exalt you before the sons of Israel.'
1:3728
This too came to pass in the truth.
1:3729
因為正如農之子約書亞,藉著約旦河的神蹟顯明自己是蒙神喜愛的人;
For just as Joshua the son of Nun was shown, by the miracle at the Jordan, to be a man beloved of God;
1:3730
so also our Jesus, after the Jordan and John's baptism, began his teaching and his miracles.
1:3731
But perhaps to some it seems unfitting that the words, 'This day I begin to exalt you,' should be applied to our Lord and Savior.
1:3732
But let them hear him speaking to the Father:
1:3733
'Father, glorify me with the glory which I had with you before the world was.'
1:3734
'Wherefore God also highly exalted him, and graciously gave him the name which is above every name.'
1:3735
祂雖被高舉,卻並非得著了本來沒有的,而是顯明了祂原本所擁有的;
But being exalted, he did not receive what he did not have, but rather showed what he already had;
1:3736
for although it was unknown that he is the Son of the God of all, he was shown to be so, when the Father said at the Jordan:
1:3737
'This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.'
1:3738
那些擡著主約櫃的祭司,也預表了施洗約翰;
The priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the Lord also prefigured John the Baptist;
1:3739
for he too was a priest, and the son of a high priest.
1:3740
Just as, then, when the priests carried the ark and entered the Jordan first, and after them all the people crossed over together with Joshua the prophet and commander, so also, when the great John began to baptize, and Jesus the Savior sanctified the nature of the waters, the pious people, through the all-holy baptism, enter into the kingdom of heaven.
1:3741
此外,那十二個人和數目相等的十二塊石頭,也預表了使徒的神聖群體,因為使徒既是建造者,又是根基;
Moreover, the twelve men and the equal number of stones also prefigured the divine company of the apostles, for they themselves are both builders and foundation;
1:3742
'built,' as it says, 'upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets.'
1:3743
And again the same apostle said:
1:3744
'As a wise master-builder I have laid a foundation.'
1:3745
The word 'heap,' however, Symmachus rendered 'a bulging skin.'
1:3746
因為水流被攔阻之後,就彷彿被鼓漲起來,隆然聳起如尖峰;
For the rushing waters, being held back, were as it were made to swell and rise to a peak;
1:3747
for the boundary set by the Creator held it back more firmly than any wall of adamant.
1:3748
這次渡河是在逾越節之前發生的;
Now the crossing took place before the Passover;
1:3749
for having crossed on the tenth day, they kept the feast of the Passover on the fourteenth.
1:3750
since in the truth also, after the saving baptism, comes the partaking of the spotless Lamb.
1:3751
How is one to understand the statement, 'He circumcised the sons of Israel a second time'? This saying above all prefigures the truth.
1:3752
因為對那些已經接受了摩西式割禮的人,福音的傳道者又帶給他們屬靈的割禮;
For upon those who had received the Mosaic circumcision, the heralds of the gospels bestowed the spiritual circumcision;
1:3753
'Believe,' they said, 'and let each of you be baptized in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall receive the promise of the Holy Spirit.'
1:3754
This the divine apostle called a circumcision not made with hands.
1:3755
'in the spirit, not in the letter.'
1:3756
Those, then, of Jewish origin who had believed in the Savior, already possessing the Mosaic circumcision, received in addition the spiritual one.
1:3757
因此,「再次」這句話,正預表了這個真理;
The phrase 'a second time,' then, prefigures this truth;
1:3758
for it is among the impossible things for the flesh to be circumcised twice.
1:3759
But the surface meaning of the letter indicates the following:
1:3760
that just as God had given this law to Abraham from the beginning, so a second time he commanded Joshua to circumcise those who were uncircumcised.
1:3761
猶太人竟不能明白這一點,實在值得哀嘆:那些受過割禮的人,遭遇各種刑罰而滅亡了;那些未受割禮的人,反倒得以存活;
It is worthy of lament that the Jews are unable to perceive how those who were circumcised perished, falling into various punishments, while the uncircumcised were preserved alive;
1:3762
and the fathers perished, while the children received the promise.
1:3763
照樣,我們既是兒女,也在等候諸天的國;
So too we, being children, await the kingdom of heaven;
1:3764
but the Jews, though occupying the rank of the fathers, fell short of the eternal goods, and were cast out of kinship with the patriarchs.
1:3765
They ought, then, to have learned from these things that the matter of circumcision was not always necessary.
1:3766
因為主宰之神,在向亞伯拉罕預先宣告寄居的年限之後,才吩咐他受割禮;
For the Master God, having foretold to Abraham the length of the sojourning, commanded that he be circumcised;
1:3767
but of those who had been delivered from the slavery of the Egyptians and were living in the wilderness, he did not demand the observance of this law, nor did he exact the penalty for its transgression,
1:3768
since, living by themselves and free from mixing with foreign nations, they had no need of the sign of circumcision.
1:3769
But when at last he led them into the promised land, he commanded them to be circumcised, so that mixing with others might not corrupt their piety.
1:3770
因為即使有人偶然陷入某種詐騙,只要看見這記號,也容易辨認出這群羊;
For even if it happened that someone fell into some deception, it was easy to see the sign and to recognize the flock;
1:3771
for sheep that are marked with a seal, even if they are lost, are easily found.
1:3772
It was likely, then, that those who spent so long a time in the wilderness did not have many knives made of iron.
1:3773
此外,那些石刀也預表了我們的割禮;
Moreover, the knives of stone also prefigure our circumcision;
1:3774
因為那磐石就是主宰基督;
for the Master Christ is the Rock;
1:3775
'for they drank,' as it says, 'from the spiritual Rock that followed them;'
1:3776
而這同一位,也被稱為刀劍;
and the same one is also called a sword;
1:3777
'for the word of God,' it says, 'is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword.'
1:3778
And his saving teaching offers us spiritual circumcision.
1:3779
The narrative, however, teaches that many even of those born in Egypt did not receive circumcision, since it is likely that those who had begotten them, out of fear because of the killing of the infants, were afraid to have circumcision performed on them.
1:3780
But all, so to speak, except for a few, who were born in the wilderness remained uncircumcised.
1:3781
The place was named Gilgal, and the name signifies freedom.
1:3782
Then the God of all said:
1:3783
'Today I have removed the reproach of Egypt from you.'
1:3784
The saying signifies the deliverance from Egyptian slavery and impiety, and the reception of the promised land.
1:3785
And we too learn from this that whoever is counted worthy of most holy baptism, and receives the spiritual circumcision, puts off the reproach of sin.
1:3786
當如何理解「耶和華軍隊的元帥」呢?有人說,那顯現的是神——道;
Who is to be understood as the commander-in-chief of the LORD's host? Some say that it was God the Word who appeared;
1:3787
but I think it was Michael the archangel.
1:3788
For when they had transgressed, the God of all said:
1:3789
'I will by no means go up with you, because the people are stiff-necked; but I will send my angel before your face, ahead of you.'
1:3790
This one, I think, is the one who now appeared to Joshua, encouraging him and signifying beforehand the divine help.
1:3791
{ How then did he make use of the divine words? For he said, 'Loose the sandal from your feet;'
1:3792
'for the place on which you stand is holy.'
1:3793
Since the God of all said to him, 'As I was with Moses, so I will be with you also,'
1:3794
for this reason he too hears what that man heard, so that he might become more courageous, as having attained the same dignity.
1:3795
Just as he commanded them to offer the firstfruits of the produce, so he also commanded them to offer the choicest portion of the spoils.
1:3796
And besides this, he also trains them through these laws, so that they might keep the necessary laws.
1:3797
他向他們顯明自己的能力,使他們不用兵器和攻城器械就攻取了第一座城,僅憑號角之聲便使城牆傾倒;
And displaying to them his own power, he caused the first city to be taken without weapons or siege engines, and brought it down by the sound of trumpets alone;
1:3798
so that, whenever they should be defeated while drawn up for battle, they might know that they themselves had furnished the occasions of defeat, by despising the divine laws.
1:3799
Why in the world, though Rahab was a foreigner, did she come to dwell among the sons of Israel, as the history teaches? This too prefigures what pertains to us.
1:3800
'And I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; those also I must bring, and they will hear my voice, and there will be one flock, one shepherd.'
1:3801
For this reason also, when giving the law, he said:
1:3802
'There shall be one law for the sojourner and for the native-born.'
1:3803
For this reason not even Moses the lawgiver forbade those of the Egyptians who wished to depart together with them.
1:3804
And it was also necessary that, like a wild olive, it be grafted into the good olive tree, as the blessed Paul says.
1:3805
「他必用長子立這城的根基,用幼子安立城門」,這是什麼意思呢?既然他已將這城獻與神,他理當將城夷為平地;
What is meant by, 'In his firstborn he shall lay its foundation, and in his youngest he shall set up its gates'? Since he had devoted the city to God, he fittingly razed it to the ground;
1:3806
considering it improper that what had been assigned to God should become a common dwelling.
1:3807
他又對重建此城的人發出咒詛:凡試圖違犯這禁令的,若要立此城的根基,就要喪失他的長子;
And he pronounced a curse upon those who would build it, so that whoever should attempt to transgress that boundary, in laying its foundations, would lose his firstborn son;
1:3808
and whoever should set up its gates, would lose his youngest.
1:3809
And the history of the Kingdoms also recalls this curse.
1:3810
Why in the world, when Achar had stolen, was the whole people disciplined? The thief supposed that, just as he had escaped the notice of men, so he would also escape the notice of God.
1:3811
He wished, then, both to expose that man, and to instill fear in all, so that those who keep the divine laws might expose those who transgress them, since they too would share in the punishment about to be inflicted.
1:3812
阿奎拉將那「素色的衣物」譯作「長袍」;
And Aquila rendered 'the plain [garment]' as 'robe';
1:3813
and 'the tongue [of gold]' he rendered as 'a golden ingot'.
1:3814
And it is clear from this too, that the valley called by the prophets 'the Valley of Achor' is the very one in which Achar was stoned.
1:3815
For indeed 'Emek-achor' is translated 'the ravine of Achor'.
1:3816
For since they had taken the first city by the sound of trumpets alone, it was altogether fitting that they should now learn to strive and labor, and to await the divine help.
1:3817
Accordingly, he immediately came to their aid as they fought, and consumed all who had fled with thunderbolts and hail.
1:3818
As for the javelin with which Joshua roused those lying in ambush, Josephus interpreted it as a 'shield', and likewise also Symmachus.
1:3819
Some accuse the prophet of cruelty, because he utterly destroyed everyone without exception and crucified the kings.
1:3820
He who accuses the prophet accuses the one who commanded these things.
1:3821
因為正是祂自己,藉著立法者摩西,吩咐要將那地一切的居民盡行剿滅;
For he himself, through Moses the lawgiver, commanded that all who inhabited that land be utterly destroyed without exception;
1:3822
since they had done things worthy of utter destruction, and had driven their lawlessness to the furthest extreme.
1:3823
正因如此,祂在古時降下了洪水,也用火燒滅了所多瑪和蛾摩拉;
For this reason he also brought the flood in ancient times, and consumed Sodom and Gomorrah with fire;
1:3824
and the prophet also commanded the leaders to place their feet upon the necks of the kings, so that, taking courage, they might array themselves for battle more eagerly.
1:3825
This also our Lord Jesus commanded.
1:3826
'Behold,' he said, 'I have given you authority to tread upon serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy.'
1:3827
May it be granted to us also to set our feet upon the necks of the opposing spirits.
1:3828
本應先求問主宰之神,然後才與他們立約;
And though it was necessary to inquire of the Master God, and only then to make covenants with them;
1:3829
having believed their false words, they were persuaded, and confirmed the covenants with an oath.
1:3830
But the God of all had commanded that all those [peoples] be given over to death.
1:3831
Caught, then, between the divine commandment and the oaths, he made them servants of the sacred ministry.
1:3832
But to minister to God is not a dishonor, but rather the greatest honor.
1:3833
And it was also necessary that Noah's prophecy should reach its fulfillment.
1:3834
For he said, 'Cursed be the boy Canaan; he shall be a servant to his brothers.'
1:3835
And in the Gibeonites this prophecy received its fulfillment.
1:3836
It is clear from this too, that some other, later writer composed this book, taking his materials from another book.
1:3837
這也預表了救主的神蹟奇工;
And this too prefigures the wonder-working of the Savior;
1:3838
for just as the sun stood still while the prophet fought, so also, when our Savior was destroying death by death, the sun withheld its rays and filled the world with darkness at midday.
1:3839
How is one to understand the statement, 'it was from the LORD to harden their hearts, so that they would meet Israel in battle, that they might be utterly destroyed, and that no mercy might be shown them, so that they might be annihilated, just as the LORD said to Moses'? Concerning the other nations God had legislated for Israel as follows:
1:3840
namely, that if, while they were besieging a city, its inhabitants should send an embassy and seek to embrace friendship, they should accept the embassy, lift the siege, and conclude peace.
1:3841
The passage therefore teaches us that God, who governs all things by weight and measure, permitted these nations to array themselves against the people, so that they might be granted no mercy at all, but be destroyed according to the divine decree.
1:3842
約旦河那邊的地,是摩西所分派的;
For to those beyond the Jordan Moses apportioned the land;
1:3843
but to those on this side of the Jordan, Joshua apportioned it.
1:3844
藉摩西分得產業的人,預表猶太人;
And those who received their portions through Moses bear the type of the Jews;
1:3845
while those who received theirs through Joshua bear the type of the believing Gentiles.
1:3846
And since Israel is the firstborn, the firstborn tribes received their portions through Moses: Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh.
1:3847
Yet these too crossed over, armed and ready, ahead of the others.
1:3848
For those from among the Jews who believed brought salvation to the Gentiles.
1:3849
Nevertheless, the Jebusites and Canaanites and other foreign nations were still left remaining, and dwelt together with Israel.
1:3850
And the truth of this type too can be found fulfilled.
1:3851
For not all received the saving word, but both Jews and Greeks persisted in contradicting it, though dwelling in the same cities and villages as we do.
1:3852
One would not err in calling them Canaanites and Hittites and Jebusites.
1:3853
Worthy of this same designation also are those who practice the abominable doctrines of the heresies.
1:3854
For this very reason the divine apostle also said:
1:3855
But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him.
1:3856
For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.
1:3857
Why on earth did Caleb ask for Hebron? Adorned with piety, he set that city before all others, the city in which the most excellent patriarchs had sojourned and been given over to burial.
1:3858
His statement makes clear that after warring for a period of seven years, they divided the land.
1:3859
I was forty years old when Moses the servant of the Lord sent me from Kadesh Barnea to spy out the land, and now the Lord has sustained me just as he said.
1:3860
This is the forty-fifth year since the Lord spoke to Moses.
1:3861
After God's sentence against the six hundred thousand, they spent thirty-eight years continuing to live in the wilderness.
1:3862
Seven, then, is what remains to make up the eighty-five.
1:3863
This the Master of all had also foretold beforehand through the most divine Moses:
1:3864
If the Lord your God brings you into the land which he promised to your fathers, after seven years you shall read this law to all the people.
1:3865
It is fitting to note that he calls Jerusalem by the name Jebus.
1:3866
西緬按照他父親的預言,得了分散各處的產業;
Simeon, in accordance with his father's prophecy, received a scattered inheritance;
1:3867
for, it says, his inheritance was in the midst of the portion of the sons of Judah.
1:3868
Then, having named the cities, he added:
1:3869
這是西緬支派子孫的產業,因為猶大子孫的地業對他們而言過大;
This is the inheritance of the tribe of the sons of Simeon, because the portion of the inheritance of the sons of Judah was too great for them;
1:3870
and so the sons of Simeon received their inheritance in the midst of their portion.
1:3871
Why is it that the most divine Joshua, after distributing the land to the others, did not assign an inheritance to himself, but received Timnath-serah from the people? In this too he imitates the Master's moderation.
1:3872
For, he says, learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
1:3873
And he embraced the most extreme poverty, to the point of not even having a house of his own.
1:3874
For, it says, the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.
1:3875
既然與他同名的約書亞是他的預表,所以約書亞沒有為自己分產業,而是接受了別人奉獻給他的那一份;
Since, then, the Joshua who bears the same name was a type of him, he did not assign an inheritance to himself, but accepted the one that was offered to him;
1:3876
thereby teaching those entrusted with any position of authority to be concerned not for their own comfort, but for the benefit of those under them.
1:3877
Why on earth did he assign the priests their cities within the tribe of Judah, and of Benjamin, and of Simeon? Even while making their journey in the wilderness, they had been joined together with the tribe of Judah.
1:3878
因為祭司和猶大支派同樣分得了東邊的地段;
For both the priests and the tribe of Judah were allotted the eastern section;
1:3879
and here again they were allotted their inheritance together with the tribe of Judah, since an intermingling of these tribes had also come about.
1:3880
因為亞倫,這位首任大祭司,娶了亞米拿達的女兒為妻;
For Aaron, the first high priest, took to wife the daughter of Amminadab;
1:3881
and Jehoiada, the most renowned high priest, took the sister of Ahaziah.
1:3882
The Master God permitted these tribes to intermingle, since the one who was to spring forth from Judah according to the flesh was to be styled not only king, but also high priest.
1:3883
他們也有必要居住在便雅憫支派之地;
It was also necessary for them to dwell within the tribe of Benjamin;
1:3884
since the divine temple was destined to be built within that tribe's territory.
1:3885
他們也從西緬支派得了一些城邑;
They also received some cities from the tribe of Simeon;
1:3886
since their portion also lay near the temple.
1:3887
For just as he assigned the tithes of the fruits of the earth and of the flocks to the priests and the Levites,
1:3888
so likewise he ordained that a kind of tithe of the cities also be given to them.
1:3889
Indeed, the patriarch Jacob had promised to give these tithes to God.
1:3890
For, he said, of all that you give me, I will surely give a tenth of it back to you.
1:3891
The people, then, were paying off an ancestral debt, not offering a gift.
1:3892
Moreover, in addition to this, he also retained possession of their portion of the land.
1:3893
When, however, the war had ceased and the division had taken place, those who had received their portions beyond the river were dismissed; but before crossing the river, they built a very great altar.
1:3894
其餘九個支派的人,並不知道築壇的用意,反以為這是不虔敬之舉的開端,於是想要率領全體百姓前去征討他們,寧可看重敬虔,也不顧念親族之情;
But those of the nine tribes, not knowing the purpose of the building, and supposing the building to be the beginning of impiety, wished to march against them with the whole people, preferring piety to kinship;
1:3895
但極有智慧的約書亞和以利亞撒卻差派非尼哈前去,因為他曾在曠野中對抗不虔之事而顯出熱心;
but the all-wise Joshua and Eleazar sent Phinehas, as one who had displayed zeal against impiety in the wilderness;
1:3896
so that he might both remind them of their forefathers and of the God-given blessings, and put a stop to the transgression that had been ventured.
1:3897
But when they had gone and learned that the innovation had not been ventured for the sake of a rival cult, but perceived that the altar which had been made was to be called a memorial of communion in true piety,
1:3898
so that their descendants might have it to point to as a proof against those who might try to exclude them from the divine festivals, they returned rejoicing and praising God for the piety of their brethren and for the common peace of all.
1:3899
This too the Jews of today ought to know and to say: that their altar was not the true altar, but prefigured the true one.
1:3900
先知(約書亞)臨終將要離世之時,把眾人召聚在一起,作出合宜的勸誡,要他們絕不可與本地人通婚,因為這樣的通婚會招致不虔敬的機會;
But when the prophet was about to depart from this life, he called everyone together and gave them fitting exhortation, that they should make no marriage alliance with the natives of the land, since such intermingling provides occasions for impiety;
1:3901
He also added threats to his exhortation:
1:3902
因為他說:你們若這樣行,就當知道,耶和華必不再從你們面前趕出這些民族;
For, he says, if you do this, know that the Lord will no longer continue to destroy these nations from before your face;
1:3903
...to you, and become as thorns in your eyes, until you perish from this good land which the Lord your God has given you.
1:3904
These things the history of the Judges has taught us more clearly.
1:3905
We have also learned the reason why, in accordance with the divine promise, they did not receive dominion over the whole land.
1:3906
For having embraced kinship with the impious nations, and having imitated their impiety, they were stripped bare of divine providence, and were compelled to serve them.
1:3907
Wonderful and philosophical also is his statement concerning death:
1:3908
For, he said, I am going the way of all the earth.
1:3909
He also demonstrates to them the truthfulness of the divine prediction:
1:3910
你們心裡、靈裡都要知道,耶和華我們的神所應許賜福給我們的一切美好的話,沒有一句落空;
And you shall know in your heart and in your soul that not one word has failed of all the good words which the Lord our God spoke concerning us;
1:3911
凡他向我們所說的,都已經賜給我們了;
all that he spoke to us, he has given to us;
1:3912
not one of them has failed to come to pass.
1:3913
The truth, he says, of the divine promises you have learned from the benefits received.
1:3914
Therefore, from this learn also the truthfulness of the threats.
1:3915
And it shall come to pass that, just as all the good words which he spoke to you have come upon you,
1:3916
so likewise the Lord will bring upon you all the evil words, until he destroys you from this good land which the Lord has given you, when you transgress the covenant of the Lord your God, which he commanded us.
1:3917
And teaching that these words were not of human origin, he added:
1:3918
For thus says the Lord, the God of Israel.
1:3919
他也提及他拉,就是亞伯拉罕和拿鶴的父親;
And he calls to mind Terah, the father of Abraham and Nahor;
1:3920
and he has mentioned Nahor on account of the maternal lineage.
1:3921
For from him came Rebecca and Leah and Rachel.
1:3922
Then he teaches that Terah served other gods, and that for this reason the sovereign God, having separated Abraham, transferred him to that land.
1:3923
他又加上了雅各進入埃及一事,以及藉摩西所成就的出埃及之事;
He has also added Jacob's entry into Egypt, and the exodus that took place through Moses;
1:3924
以及海上的奇蹟、在曠野中的行程,還有亞摩利人的徹底覆滅;
and the wonder of the sea, and the sojourn in the wilderness, and the utter destruction of the Amorites;
1:3925
以及巴勒的種種圖謀,和巴蘭違背己意所發出的祝福;
and the schemes of Balak, and the blessings Balaam pronounced contrary to his own intention;
1:3926
and the strange crossing of the river, and the destruction of the enemies who rose up against them, and their enjoyment of goods of every kind.
1:3927
And he exhorts them to be freed from servitude to foreign gods, and to serve only the God who made and saved them.
1:3928
他又向他們提出了一項抉擇;
And he has set before them also a choice;
1:3929
for he says, 'Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served beyond the river, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell.'
1:3930
他如此向眾人提出這抉擇之後,便親自顯明了自己心志的虔誠;
Having thus set this choice before the others, he himself displayed the piety of his own resolve;
1:3931
'But I and my house will serve the Lord, for he is holy.'
1:3932
Then, when the people had renounced the worship of the falsely-named gods and had promised to serve only the God who had saved them, the most divine Joshua took up the matter and said to them:
1:3933
'You will not be able to serve the Lord, for he is a holy God;'
1:3934
'and being jealous over you, he will not forgive your transgressions and your sins, whenever you forsake the Lord and serve other gods;'
1:3935
'and coming upon you he will afflict you and utterly consume you, in return for the good he did for you.'
1:3936
He means: do not expect that, even while transgressing the law, you will enjoy the same good things.
1:3937
For the sovereign God knows how not only to do good, but also to punish those who transgress.
1:3938
And when they had accepted this proposal as well, and had promised to serve the Lord, he necessarily added:
1:3939
'You are witnesses against yourselves, that you have chosen the Lord, to serve him.'
1:3940
The narrative also taught this: that after exhorting them to be freed from the worship of foreign gods, and legislating concerning piety, he did not leave these things unrecorded, but preserved a written memorial of them.
1:3941
Why, after setting up the stone, did he say:
1:3942
『這塊石頭必作你們的見證,因為它聽見了主今日對你們所說的一切話。』石頭固然是無生命之物;
'This stone shall be a witness to you, for it has heard all the words which the Lord spoke to you this day.' The stone, indeed, is inanimate;
1:3943
但為了責備那些有生命、有理性的人,便藉著無生命之物來作見證;
but for the reproof of living and rational beings, testimony is borne through inanimate things;
1:3944
and he also made use of the ancient custom,
1:3945
for Jacob and Laban, when they made their covenant, called the heap of stones a witness of the covenant.
1:3946
這段記載還教導我們,一位敬虔愛神的統治者能帶來何等的益處;
The narrative also teaches how much benefit a pious and God-loving ruler brings;
1:3947
for it says, 'Israel served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the works of the Lord which he did for Israel.'
1:3948
但在這些人去世之後,他們便偏向了不敬虔;
But after their death, they turned aside to impiety;
1:3949
for this is also what the conclusion of the narrative taught.
1:3950
然而他們也為自己的不敬虔付上了代價;
But they paid the penalty for their impiety;
1:3951
for being stripped of divine care, they were subjected to the yoke of servitude, and had as their master the king of the Moabites.
1:3952
But the Lord who loves mankind, remembering the promise made to their fathers, limited their servitude to a period of eighteen years.
1:3953
I think, however, that the beginning of this narrative is a recapitulation of the things accomplished by Joshua the son of Nun.
1:3954
因為其中也提到亞多尼比色,以及對抗他的戰爭,還有他的敗北與被滅;
For it also mentions Adonibezek, and the war against him, and his defeat and destruction;
1:3955
and it also mentions Hebron, how it was allotted to Caleb, and the destruction of the three giants, Sheshai and Ahiman and Talmai, whom it named as descendants of Anak.
1:3956
It is likely that their destruction was foretold at that time, but that the prediction came to fulfilment later.
1:3957
因為他們有時得勝,有時卻落敗;
For at one time they were victorious, and at another they were defeated;
1:3958
and at one time they ruled over the foreigners, and at another they were enslaved to them.
1:3959
It is clear, then, that after Jerusalem had been burned down, the Jebusites rebuilt it again, taking advantage of the people's misfortune.
1:3960
我認為這卷書也是後來才寫成的,其證據就在於:這段記載稱這座城為耶路撒冷;
I think, moreover, that this book was composed at a later time, using as evidence the fact that the narrative calls this city Jerusalem;
1:3961
for it was only later that it received this appellation, having previously been called Jebus.
1:3962
『求你賜我水澤之地,就是高地的水澤和低地的水澤』,這是什麼意思?西馬庫斯一派的譯者將其譯為『灌溉之水』;
What is meant by 'Give me a release of water, both a release of the upper lands and a release of the lower lands'? Those associated with Symmachus rendered it 'an irrigation of water';
1:3963
and instead of 'the lower lands', they translated 'the level lands'.
1:3964
亞革撒是受她丈夫俄陀聶的慫恿,才去求一塊田地的;
She was prompted by Othniel her husband to ask for a field;
1:3965
於是她便求了灌溉之水;
so then she asked for an irrigation of water;
1:3966
and she received, just as she had asked, not only level land, but also hill country.
1:3967
For the phrase 'according to her heart' signifies that which was to her heart's desire.
1:3968
He has called the hill country 'the upper lands', and the level plains 'the lower lands'.
1:3969
這裡為何稱立法者(摩西)的岳父為約巴,而在先前那些記載中,他卻被稱為葉忒羅和流珥呢?我已經說過,約巴其實是那人(葉忒羅)的兒子;
How is it that here he has named the lawgiver's father-in-law Jobab, when in those earlier narratives he was named Jethro and Raguel? I have already said that Jobab was the son of that man;
1:3970
and it has called him 'father-in-law' because he was the brother of his wife.
1:3971
For indeed, even now, many people call such kinsmen by the name of 'father-in-law'.
1:3972
The children of Jobab, then, are the grandchildren of Jethro.
1:3973
Which city does he call 'the city of palm trees'? Jericho.
1:3974
I think it is given this name because of the fruit of the palm trees.
1:3975
For indeed, in the book preceding this one, as soon as the people had crossed the Jordan, the author said:
1:3976
'They ate unleavened bread from the produce of the land, and on that very day the manna ceased, after they had eaten of the grain of the land;'
1:3977
'and the sons of Israel no longer had manna;'
1:3978
for in that year they consumed the produce of the land of palm trees.
1:3979
And indeed the second book of Chronicles, in recounting those whom the ten tribes had taken captive from the tribe of Judah, spoke as follows:
1:3980
'and they placed them in Jericho, the city of palm trees, near their brothers.'
1:3981
『猶大支派承受了山地為業,因為他們不能趕出住在谷中的人,因為利甲曾這樣吩咐他們。』關於利甲,聖經在許多地方都提到他,說他是位極其虔誠的人;
'Judah, and it inherited the hill country, for it was not able to dispossess the inhabitants of the valley, because Rechab had charged them.' As for Rechab, sacred Scripture makes mention of him in many places as a man of exceeding piety;
1:3982
而且他的虔誠也延續到了他的後裔身上;
and that his piety extended even to his descendants;
1:3983
he says that this man advised the tribe of Judah to leave the valley and dwell in the hill country.
1:3984
He himself was also of the tribe of Judah, as the book of Chronicles teaches.
1:3985
我認為他之所以勸他們離開谷地,是因為周圍鄰邦的不敬虔;
I think he advised them to flee the valley because of the impiety of the surrounding peoples;
1:3986
and moreover also because of its proximity to the sea,
1:3987
因為靠海而居的人,既接納從遠方乘船而來的人,自己也熱衷於航海;
for those who dwell near the sea both receive those who sail in from afar, and themselves also become eager for seafaring;
1:3988
and the intermingling with foreigners corrupted their manner of life under the Law.
1:3989
他們為何沒有攻取所有的城,反倒有一大群外族人與他們同住呢?首先,是因為怠惰,他們未能佔領全地;
Why in the world did they not take all the cities, but a multitude of foreign nations dwelt among them? First, because of sluggishness they did not gain mastery of the whole land;
1:3990
其次也是因為貪婪之故;
and then also because of covetousness;
1:3991
For it says, 'They put the Canaanite to tribute,' and 'in driving him out he did not drive him out.'
1:3992
And this the author said concerning each tribe.
1:3993
And besides this, having transgressed the divine law and having served the gods of foreigners, they were stripped bare of divine providence.
1:3994
正是為此緣故,全智的主並沒有將迦南諸族徹底消滅,反倒容許許多族類與他們為鄰;
For this very reason the all-wise Lord did not utterly destroy the whole race of the Canaanite nations, but allowed many of them to dwell as neighbors to them;
1:3995
so that, being warred upon and forced to serve, they might perceive the harm that had come from their error, and might be joined to the God who had saved them, and enjoy the assistance that comes from him.
1:3996
And that I say these things not by employing merely human reasonings, but having been taught by the history itself, I shall show at once.
1:3997
For it says, 'The angel of the Lord went up from Gilgal to Bochim, and to Bethel, and to the house of Israel, from Gilgal.'
1:3998
Now Gilgal was the name given to the place of the foreskins.
