1:2692⧉ ⤴︎
'But if the man has no kinsman to whom the restitution for the wrong done him may be repaid, the restitution repaid to the Lord shall belong to the priest, besides the ram of atonement, by which atonement shall be made for him.'
1:2693⧉ ⤴︎
He also commanded that the priests eat the firstfruits that are offered.
1:2694⧉ ⤴︎
For the Levites were the firstfruits of the people, and the priests were the firstfruits of the Levites.
1:2695⧉ ⤴︎
As firstfruits, then, they received the firstfruits.
1:2696⧉ ⤴︎
'For it is,' he said, 'a sacrifice of jealousy, a sacrifice of memorial, a sacrifice that brings sin to remembrance.'
1:2697⧉ ⤴︎
因此他也吩咐這祭不可加油,也不可加乳香;
Hence he commanded that it have neither oil nor frankincense;
1:2698⧉ ⤴︎
for it was deprived both of fragrance and of the light of righteousness.
1:2699⧉ ⤴︎
The Lord God, however, legislated that this be done, knowing their murderous disposition.
1:2700⧉ ⤴︎
For so that they would not kill their wives out of mere suspicion, he commanded that the suspected woman be brought to him, since he clearly knows all things, even what is done in secret.
1:2701⧉ ⤴︎
'The priest,' he says, 'shall bring her near and set the woman before the Lord;'
1:2702⧉ ⤴︎
'and the priest shall take clean, living water before the Lord in an earthen vessel, and some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle of testimony; and the priest, taking it, shall put it into the water;'
1:2703⧉ ⤴︎
'and the priest shall set the woman before the Lord, and shall uncover the woman's head, and shall put into her hands the sacrifice of memorial, the sacrifice of jealousy;'
1:2704⧉ ⤴︎
'and in the priest's hand shall be the water of conviction that brings the curse.'
1:2705⧉ ⤴︎
He commanded all this to be done in order to terrify the suspected woman, so that, if she had sinned, she might confess, and through repentance receive forgiveness.
1:2706⧉ ⤴︎
For this reason he commands that she be brought before God unveiled, teaching that all things are naked and laid bare before him, and that nothing we do escapes his notice.
1:2707⧉ ⤴︎
That he commanded these things to happen in order to terrify her, what follows makes plain.
1:2708⧉ ⤴︎
'And the priest shall put her under oath and shall say to the woman:'
1:2709⧉ ⤴︎
'If no man has lain with you, if you have not transgressed so as to be defiled while under your husband, be free from this water of conviction that brings the curse.'
1:2710⧉ ⤴︎
'But if you, being under a husband, have transgressed, or you have been defiled, and someone other than your husband has lain with you—'
1:2711⧉ ⤴︎
'may the Lord make you a curse and an object of cursing in the midst of your people, when the Lord makes your thigh waste away and your belly swell.'
1:2712⧉ ⤴︎
He also commanded the woman to assent to the curse and to say:
1:2713⧉ ⤴︎
「阿們,阿們」;他又吩咐要把這咒詛寫下來,用水洗去,然後讓婦人喝下這水;
'So be it, so be it'; and he commanded that the curse be written down, and be washed off with water, and that the woman drink the water;
1:2714⧉ ⤴︎
but first the sacrifice was to be offered, that is, the barley flour.
1:2715⧉ ⤴︎
接著他教導:若她是無辜的,就必保持健康;
Then he teaches that if she is innocent, she will be kept sound and healthy;
1:2716⧉ ⤴︎
but if she is guilty and conceals it, she will learn by bitter experience the power of the curse, both her belly bursting and her thigh wasting away.
1:2717⧉ ⤴︎
For through the very members by which the sin was committed, through these comes the punishment.
1:2718⧉ ⤴︎
And 'the object of cursing' is to be understood thus:
1:2719⧉ ⤴︎
whenever someone suffers terrible and irreparable things, some are accustomed to swear and say:
1:2720⧉ ⤴︎
'May I not suffer what so-and-so has suffered.'
1:2721⧉ ⤴︎
What is [meant by], 'whoever solemnly vows a vow, to consecrate himself in purity to the Lord'? There are many kinds of this promise.
1:2722⧉ ⤴︎
Some, for a specified number of days, vow not to drink wine, and not to cut their hair.
1:2723⧉ ⤴︎
Such were those concerning whom the divine James spoke to the divinely inspired Paul:
1:2724⧉ ⤴︎
'There are some who have a vow upon themselves;'
1:2725⧉ ⤴︎
'take these men and purify yourself along with them, and pay their expenses;'
1:2726⧉ ⤴︎
that is, provide the sacrifices offered on their behalf according to the law, so that you may dispel the suspicion.
1:2727⧉ ⤴︎
關於這些人,律法在此宣告並吩咐:凡許這願的人,在許願的一切日子裡,都要禁戒醋、葡萄,以及葡萄的渣滓;
Concerning these the law here declares, and commands that those who make this promise abstain also from vinegar, and from grapes and grape-husks, for all the days of the vow;
1:2728⧉ ⤴︎
He calls the promise a 'vow.'
1:2729⧉ ⤴︎
'and not to cut his hair, until the days are fulfilled which he vowed to the Lord.'
1:2730⧉ ⤴︎
He calls 'holy' the one who lets his hair grow, as having consecrated his hair to God.
1:2731⧉ ⤴︎
'He shall be holy, letting the hair of his head grow long, all the days of his vow to the Lord' -- that is to say, the hair you have dedicated to God you shall not cut until you bring the promise to its completion.
1:2732⧉ ⤴︎
He commands him not to go near a deceased father, nor a brother, nor anyone else.
1:2733⧉ ⤴︎
他說,因為即便偶然發生有人猝死而此人恰巧在場,也必須把全部頭髮剃去;
For even if, he says, it should happen that this man is present when someone dies suddenly, it is necessary to remove all his hair;
1:2734⧉ ⤴︎
and not only on the first day but also on the seventh.
1:2735⧉ ⤴︎
好使那些逃過剃刀、在這七日之間又長出來的頭髮,也一併剃除;
so that even the hairs which escaped the razor, having grown during the seven days, might be removed as well;
1:2736⧉ ⤴︎
然後在第八日獻上兩隻斑鳩;
then on the eighth day to bring two turtledoves;
1:2737⧉ ⤴︎
一隻作贖罪祭,另一隻作全燔祭;
the one for sin, the other for a whole burnt offering;
1:2738⧉ ⤴︎
and one lamb for a trespass offering.
1:2739⧉ ⤴︎
由此我們更精確地得知,他把為無心之過所獻的祭稱為「贖愆祭」;
From this we learn more precisely that he calls the offering for involuntary sins a 'trespass offering';
1:2740⧉ ⤴︎
因為發生在這人身上的事,也是非出於本意的;
for what happened to this man was also involuntary;
1:2741⧉ ⤴︎
for when someone died suddenly, he incurred defilement.
1:2742⧉ ⤴︎
他吩咐這人要重新從頭計算所許諾的日數;
He commands him to number again from the beginning the number of the promised days;
1:2743⧉ ⤴︎
'for their former days,' he says, 'shall be counted as nothing for them, because the head of his vow was defiled.'
1:2744⧉ ⤴︎
他也教導了那已完成潔淨之願的人,應當獻上哪些祭物;
He also taught what sacrifices it is fitting for the one who has fulfilled the vow of purification to offer;
1:2745⧉ ⤴︎
一隻公羊羔作全燔祭,一隻母羊羔作贖罪祭;
a male lamb for a whole burnt offering, and a ewe lamb for sin;
1:2746⧉ ⤴︎
for the victims offered for sin are female, since it is when the rational faculty grows slack that sin is ventured.
1:2747⧉ ⤴︎
此外,他又規定要獻上一隻無殘疾的公綿羊作平安祭,並獻上一籃無酵餅;
and moreover he ordained that a ram without blemish be offered for a peace-offering, and a basket of unleavened bread;
1:2748⧉ ⤴︎
then, when the sacrifice was being performed, to place the hair upon the sacrifice of the peace-offering.
1:2749⧉ ⤴︎
那放在許願者手中、又由祭司接過的煮熟肩肉,象徵所許諾的行動已經完成;
The boiled shoulder, placed in the hands of the one who made the vow and received by the priest, signifies that the promised act has been accomplished;
1:2750⧉ ⤴︎
for once an act has taken place, the boiled shoulder is indicative of it.
1:2751⧉ ⤴︎
He legislated these things not in vain, but teaching us to be careful of precision, neither to make vows at random, and, having promised, to fulfill what was promised.
1:2752⧉ ⤴︎
他也藉這些事教導我們要持守聖潔、不受玷污;
Through these things he also instructs us to keep our sanctification undefiled;
1:2753⧉ ⤴︎
for the one who has received a stain needs the cleansing from above and the removal of defilements through repentance.
1:2754⧉ ⤴︎
For this is also what the blessed Paul said when writing to the Galatians:
1:2755⧉ ⤴︎
'My little children, for whom I am again in labor, until Christ be formed in you.'
1:2756⧉ ⤴︎
After this he teaches how it is fitting for the priests to bless, and how the divine name confers blessing on those who draw near.
1:2757⧉ ⤴︎
'They shall put my name upon the sons of Israel,' he says, 'and I the Lord will bless them.'
1:2758⧉ ⤴︎
And he also gives the very words of the blessing:
1:2759⧉ ⤴︎
「願耶和華賜福給你,保守你;願耶和華使他的臉光照你,賜恩給你;
'The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you;
1:2760⧉ ⤴︎
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.'
1:2761⧉ ⤴︎
藉此我們得知,應當先為蒙福的人祈求神聖的恩賜;
By these words we are taught that one must first ask divine gifts for those who are blessed;
1:2762⧉ ⤴︎
因為「願主賜福給你」正是此意;
for this is what 'the Lord bless you' signifies;
1:2763⧉ ⤴︎
其次,是要讓所賜的蒙保守;
then, that what is given should be kept safe;
1:2764⧉ ⤴︎
for he added, 'and keep you.'
1:2765⧉ ⤴︎
第二個祝福則預示了我們神我們救主的顯現;因為經文說:「願他使他的臉光照你,並憐憫你」;
The second blessing foretells the manifestation of God our Savior; for it says, 'may he make his face shine upon you, and be merciful to you';
1:2766⧉ ⤴︎
for the economy of God our Savior according to the flesh is full of mercy.
1:2767⧉ ⤴︎
因此他也賜給我們與神和好的恩典;
Therefore he also granted us reconciliation with God;
1:2768⧉ ⤴︎
for this is what the next blessing teaches:
1:2769⧉ ⤴︎
'the Lord lift up his countenance upon you, and give you peace.'
1:2770⧉ ⤴︎
Having discoursed on these matters concerning the blessing, and having recounted how he also anointed the tabernacle, and what the tribal chiefs brought,
1:2771⧉ ⤴︎
the prophet taught how he received into his ears the divine voice borne from the mercy-seat,
1:2772⧉ ⤴︎
which lay upon the ark and was overshadowed by the wings of the cherubim.
1:2773⧉ ⤴︎
He did not write these things out of vainglory, but to teach that from there the sovereign God would display his own glory to the high priests who entered once a year, in a manner that human nature was able to behold.
1:2774⧉ ⤴︎
問:為何吩咐利未人要成聖之後,又命令要將全身的毛髮剃淨?答:毛髮乃是死亡(麻木)的象徵;
Why on earth, having commanded the Levites to be sanctified, did he order the whole body to be shorn of its hair? The hairs are a symbol of deadness;
1:2775⧉ ⤴︎
for these are dead and do not receive any sensation of pain.
1:2776⧉ ⤴︎
He therefore commands that those who minister to God possess true life, and have nothing dead or foul-smelling about them.
1:2777⧉ ⤴︎
This the divinely-inspired Paul also teaches us:
1:2778⧉ ⤴︎
'I have been crucified with Christ,' he says;
1:2779⧉ ⤴︎
'yet I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.'
1:2780⧉ ⤴︎
'For,' he says, 'I have dedicated myself to the divine energies.'
1:2781⧉ ⤴︎
But the last stage of life has a weaker body.
1:2782⧉ ⤴︎
因此他把青年與老年都排除在外;
He therefore excludes both youth and old age;
1:2783⧉ ⤴︎
the one on account of the immaturity of the soul, the other on account of the weakness of the body.
1:2784⧉ ⤴︎
Why were those who were unclean by reason of a dead body unable to keep the Passover? The reason is bound up with the exemption itself.
1:2785⧉ ⤴︎
因為他們是剛從喪禮而來,已將一些親屬送去安葬,按照律法的規定,他們是不潔淨的;
For since they were coming from a funeral, having committed some of their kinsfolk to burial, they were unclean according to the ordinance of the law;
1:2786⧉ ⤴︎
因此他們害怕若履行逾越節的誡命,就會違反有關不潔之人所定的律法,陷入律法互相牴觸的窘境,於是他們把緣由告訴了立法者;
fearing therefore that, in fulfilling the commandment of the Passover, they might transgress the law laid down concerning the unclean and fall into a conflict of laws, they explained the reason to the lawgiver;
1:2787⧉ ⤴︎
but not even he dared to give an answer until he had inquired of the Master.
1:2788⧉ ⤴︎
For it was into this very error that Joshua the son of Nun fell, when he received the Gibeonites before making inquiry.
1:2789⧉ ⤴︎
於是主宰神吩咐:凡因此污穢而不潔,或因居住遙遠、以致不能在正月十四日守逾越節的人,應當在二月十四日守逾越節;
The sovereign God therefore commanded that those who fell into this defilement, or who were dwelling far off, and who for this reason were unable to keep the Passover on the fourteenth day of the first month, should keep the Passover on the fourteenth day of the second month;
1:2790⧉ ⤴︎
He also commanded that the proselytes share in the same ordinances.
1:2791⧉ ⤴︎
'For there shall be one law for you,' he says, 'both for the proselyte, and for the native of the land.'
1:2792⧉ ⤴︎
Through these he foreshadows in advance the calling of the nations.
1:2793⧉ ⤴︎
'With an alarm-blast you shall sound the trumpets at your setting out;'
1:2794⧉ ⤴︎
'but when you gather the assembly, you shall sound the trumpets, and not with an alarm-blast' -- why is this? The all-wise Paul says:
1:2795⧉ ⤴︎
「若號筒發出的聲音不清楚,誰能預備打仗呢?」由此可見,聲音本有分別:一種表示停止安營,另一種表示啟程前行;
'If the trumpet gives an indistinct sound, who will prepare himself for battle?' There were, then, differences of sound: the one signified a halt, the other signified the resuming of the march;
1:2796⧉ ⤴︎
and one trumpet sounding called the rulers, while two trumpets sounding called the people together with the rulers.
1:2797⧉ ⤴︎
The sounding of the trumpets, however, was assigned to the priests alone, since the trumpet signified the calling of God.
1:2798⧉ ⤴︎
'If you go out to war in your land against the adversaries who oppose you, you shall sound an alarm with the trumpets, and you shall be remembered before the Lord, and you shall be saved from your enemies.'
1:2799⧉ ⤴︎
'And in the days of your gladness, and in your feasts, and at your new moons, you shall sound the trumpets over your whole burnt offerings and over the sacrifices of your peace offerings, and it shall be to you a memorial before your God: I am the Lord your God.'
1:2800⧉ ⤴︎
For since God, when giving the Law on Mount Sinai, had thundered upon their ears with a very great sound of trumpets, he reminds them of that manifestation by means of the sound of the trumpets.
1:2801⧉ ⤴︎
Sound the trumpet at the new moon, on the notable day of your feast.
1:2802⧉ ⤴︎
And by these things we too are taught: when gathering the whole congregation of the people, to sound the trumpet, and not merely give a signal.
1:2803⧉ ⤴︎
因為為了未受啟蒙者的緣故,我們論及神聖奧祕時,說話含糊不明;
For on account of the uninitiated we speak without giving a clear sign concerning the divine mysteries;
1:2804⧉ ⤴︎
but once these have been separated off, we plainly teach the initiated.
1:2805⧉ ⤴︎
What was the murmuring of the people? They were vexed at the toil of the journey.
1:2806⧉ ⤴︎
為什麼他們一犯罪,他就立刻施以懲罰?因為律法才剛開始施行,理當藉犯者受罰,使其餘的人得以警惕自守;
Why does he bring punishments upon them the moment they sin? Because the law was [just] beginning, and so it was necessary that the rest be brought to their senses by the punishment of the transgressors;
1:2807⧉ ⤴︎
for fear is fitting for those who are [only] beginning.
1:2808⧉ ⤴︎
然而,仁慈與懲罰是相輔相成的;
Yet loving-kindness was joined together with the punishment;
1:2809⧉ ⤴︎
for when they repented, they enjoyed his favor.
1:2810⧉ ⤴︎
Thus, for instance, when the God-sent fire had consumed a part of the camp, and then all had run together to make supplication, the lawgiver asked for pardon, and the loving Lord granted it.
1:2811⧉ ⤴︎
That the punishments were brought upon them out of necessity, what follows bears witness.
1:2812⧉ ⤴︎
For immediately after the cessation of the punishment, they renewed the memory of Egypt, and of the onions and the garlic and the other things, for which the passion of gluttony kindled their desire.
1:2813⧉ ⤴︎
因此,作者恰如其分地將神的慷慨與他們的忘恩負義並列,敘述有關嗎哪的事,並指出嗎哪不但滿足了對餅的需要,也滿足了對配菜的需要;
Quite fittingly, then, the writer joined the divine munificence to their ingratitude when he narrated the things concerning the manna, [showing] that it supplied not only the need of bread, but also of relish;
1:2814⧉ ⤴︎
for, it says, they ground it in the mill, and pounded it in the mortar, and boiled it in the pot, and made cakes baked in the ashes.
1:2815⧉ ⤴︎
But when they lamented, the Master God was angered, and the prophet was distressed and cried out, saying:
1:2816⧉ ⤴︎
「你為何苦待你的僕人?為何我在你面前不蒙恩,以致你把這全體百姓的重擔加在我身上呢?這百姓豈是我懷的胎,豈是我生的,你竟對我說,把他們抱在懷裡,如同保姆抱著吃奶的孩子,帶到你向他們列祖起誓應許之地去呢?」藉這些話,他顯明了他們的不成熟與幼稚;
'Why have you afflicted your servant, and why have I not found favor before you, that you have laid upon me the burden of this whole people? Did I conceive this people in the womb, or did I give birth to it, that you should say to me, Take it into your bosom, as a nurse takes up the suckling child, into the land which you swore to their fathers?' And by these words he has shown their imperfection and childishness;
1:2817⧉ ⤴︎
for he likened them to a suckling infant, able to do nothing else, but wishing only to draw the milk by sucking.
1:2818⧉ ⤴︎
But since these words were exceedingly those of a man in distress —
1:2819⧉ ⤴︎
for what follows also has this same sense:
1:2820⧉ ⤴︎
he is taught by the Master God that it is not by human power but by divine grace that he governs the people.
1:2821⧉ ⤴︎
「你要從以色列的長老中,給我招聚七十個人,就是你所知道作百姓長老和首領的;
'Gather to me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you yourself know to be elders of the people and their scribes;
1:2822⧉ ⤴︎
你要把他們帶到見證的會幕;
and you shall bring them to the tabernacle of testimony;

他們要與你一同站在那裡,我要降臨,在那裡與你說話,也要從你身上的聖靈取一些,加在他們身上;
and they shall stand there with you, and I will come down, and speak with you there, and I will take from the Spirit that is upon you and put it upon them;
1:2824⧉ ⤴︎
and they will help you bear the burden of this people, and you will not bear it alone.'
1:2825⧉ ⤴︎
By these words the lawgiver learned that he had received grace sufficient for the ministry [entrusted to him].
1:2826⧉ ⤴︎
'I will take from the Spirit that is upon you.'
1:2827⧉ ⤴︎
他這樣說,並非因為缺乏另一種能力或恩典,而是要教導摩西:他所領受的能力已足夠應付需要;至於神將恩典分賜給七十人之後,並未減損摩西的恩典,事實本身便可作證;
For he said this not because he was in want of some other power or grace, but teaching him that he had received power sufficient for the need; and that in giving also to the seventy he did not diminish his grace, the facts themselves bear witness;
1:2828⧉ ⤴︎
for he continued to administer and to work wonders, doing the very same things which he had performed before.

正如有人用一根燈芯點燃無數根燈芯,既不會使那根燈芯減損,又能將光分給其他燈芯;
For just as one who kindles countless wicks from a single wick neither diminishes that one, and yet imparts its light to the others,
1:2830⧉ ⤴︎
so also the God of all, in imparting a share of this grace to the seventy, did not lessen the grace given to Moses.

因為成千上萬的人,都由一位司祭施洗,並領受了神聖的恩賜,卻不會使那司祭的恩典減少;
For many tens of thousands of people, being baptized by a single priest and receiving the divine gift, do not diminish the priest's grace;

Moreover, since according to the law the leper was considered unclean, and Aaron was the root and foundation of the priests, in order that the reproach might not extend to the whole line, He did not bring upon him an equal punishment, but through his sister He both frightened and instructed him at once.

1:2955⧉ ⤴︎
