1:920⧉ ⤴︎
But it was not Solomon who ruled to the ends of the world, but Jesus Christ, who according to His humanity sprang from Solomon, and who is also called Solomon because of His peaceable, gentle nature, and because He bestows peace.
1:921⧉ ⤴︎
Now then, since we have learned who Solomon is, come, let us take up the interpretation.
1:922⧉ ⤴︎
'Behold, the bed of Solomon.' Let us understand the bridegroom's bed to mean the divine Scriptures.
1:923⧉ ⤴︎
For in them the bride, as it were, reclining together with the bridegroom and receiving the seeds of His teaching, conceives, and is with child, and travails, and brings forth spiritual profit, so as to cry out with the prophet:
1:924⧉ ⤴︎
'we have wrought thy salvation upon the earth.' – 'Sixty mighty men,' it says, 'are round about it, of the mighty men of Israel.'
1:925⧉ ⤴︎
「他們都手持刀劍,精於戰事」;
'All holding swords, being expert in war;'
1:926⧉ ⤴︎
'every man his sword upon his thigh, because of fear in the nights.' I consider that the number sixty is set here not to indicate this quantity, but that by this name are signified the saints who distinguished themselves under the Old Testament.
1:927⧉ ⤴︎
因為他們說,十是完全的數目;
For they say that ten is the perfect number;
1:928⧉ ⤴︎
and that six is the number befitting those under the Law.
1:929⧉ ⤴︎
'For six days,' it says, 'thou shalt labour.' They say, then, that those who were made perfect under the Law stand round about the bed, tracing their lineage from Israel, being mightier than all others, holding swords, versed in the experience of war, and bearing other swords upon their thighs.
1:930⧉ ⤴︎
'Because of fear in the nights,' it says. Symmachus rendered this more clearly, saying, 'because of nightly terrors.' These mighty men, it says, guard His bed, protecting the bride against the incursions of the adversaries.
1:931⧉ ⤴︎
就是那責備駁斥的話語,以及那隱藏而奧祕的話語;
the refuting word, and that which is hidden and mystical;
1:932⧉ ⤴︎
and the refuting word ready at hand, but the mystical one stored within in the sheath.
1:933⧉ ⤴︎
'King Solomon made himself a litter of the woods of Lebanon.'
1:934⧉ ⤴︎
「他造轎的柱子是銀的,靠背是金的」;
'The pillars thereof he made of silver, and the couch thereof of gold;'
1:935⧉ ⤴︎
'love from the daughters of Jerusalem.'
1:936⧉ ⤴︎
在此讓我們再次把這轎理解為聖使徒,他們在列邦、君王和以色列子民面前擔負了主的名;
Here again let us understand the litter to mean the holy apostles, who bore the name of the Lord before nations and kings, and the children of Israel;
1:937⧉ ⤴︎
for indeed concerning the blessed Paul, Christ says this to Ananias:
1:938⧉ ⤴︎
'Go, for this man is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before nations and kings, and the children of Israel.' And the divinely-inspired Paul himself cries out:
1:939⧉ ⤴︎
'Since ye seek a proof of Christ speaking in me?' These men the blessed Habakkuk also calls horses:
1:940⧉ ⤴︎
'and thy riding is salvation.' And again:
1:941⧉ ⤴︎
「祢乘馬踐踏海,激動眾水。」他以「海」稱呼列邦;當使徒傳道之時,列邦便被激動;
'Thou didst mount thy horses upon the sea, troubling many waters.' And by 'sea' he calls the nations, which were then troubled when the apostles were preaching;
1:942⧉ ⤴︎
wherefore also the unbelievers said concerning them:
1:943⧉ ⤴︎
'These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also, whom Jason hath received.' Therefore those whom Habakkuk named horses, we find called a litter in the Song of Songs.
1:944⧉ ⤴︎
所以所羅門王用利巴嫩的木料為自己造了一乘轎。神聖的聖經常以「利巴嫩」稱呼耶路撒冷和猶太人的群眾;
So then King Solomon made himself a litter of the woods of Lebanon. The divine Scripture often calls Jerusalem, and the multitude of the Jews, 'Lebanon';
1:945⧉ ⤴︎
and this we demonstrated in the preface of our discourse from the prophetic writings.
1:946⧉ ⤴︎
Since, then, the blessed apostles traced their lineage from those people, it fittingly says that the litter was fashioned of the woods of Lebanon.
1:947⧉ ⤴︎
'And the pillars thereof,' it says, 'he made of silver.'
1:948⧉ ⤴︎
我們也發現他們同樣被稱為柱子;
And we find that they too are called pillars;
1:949⧉ ⤴︎
for the blessed Paul, writing to the Galatians, says:
1:950⧉ ⤴︎
'Peter, and James, and John, who seemed to be pillars, gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship, that we should go unto the nations, and they unto the circumcision.' And they say that the couch thereof is of gold.
1:951⧉ ⤴︎
'Its ascent is of purple'; for to those who are beginning, it is fitting to be ruled as subjects, but to those who have been perfected, to be led as a bride to the bridegroom.
1:952⧉ ⤴︎
「其中所鋪的乃是石頭的鋪道」;
'And within it, a pavement of stone;'
1:953⧉ ⤴︎
for the divine oracles resemble pearls and precious stones, according to the prophet who said:
1:954⧉ ⤴︎
'The judgments of the Lord are true, and altogether righteous, more to be desired than gold and much precious stone.' And again:
1:955⧉ ⤴︎
'Behold, I have desired thy commandments above gold and topaz.' And 'the kingdom of heaven,' according to the Lord's word, 'is like unto a merchant seeking goodly pearls.' And elsewhere He says:
1:956⧉ ⤴︎
'Cast not your pearls before swine.' Having shown that the litter of the king is such, they urge the daughters of Jerusalem to go forth to the contemplation of the bridegroom, to behold the crown set upon him, and they say:
1:957⧉ ⤴︎
'Go forth, and behold Solomon, O daughters of Zion, with the crown wherewith his mother crowned him in the day of his espousals, and in the day of the gladness of his heart.'
1:958⧉ ⤴︎
'O daughters of Jerusalem and Zion.' And that Zion here means the heavenly one, the blessed Paul taught us, saying:
1:959⧉ ⤴︎
'But ye are come unto mount Zion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to an innumerable company of angels in festal assembly, and to the Church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven.' – 'You then,' they say, 'O daughters of Zion and Jerusalem, go forth and behold'; for it is impossible for us to behold unless we have withdrawn ourselves from the affairs of this life.
1:960⧉ ⤴︎
「看那位以愛為冠冕的君王」;
'Behold the king crowned with love;'
1:961⧉ ⤴︎
for thus he loved the world, that being in the form of God, he counted it not robbery to be equal with God, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant.
1:962⧉ ⤴︎
祂如此愛世人,以致祂像羊被牽到宰殺之地,又像羊羔在剪毛的人面前無聲;
Thus he loved the world, that he was led as a sheep to the slaughter, and as a lamb dumb before its shearer;
1:963⧉ ⤴︎
and he redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us.
1:964⧉ ⤴︎
'Greater love than this can no one show, than that a man lay down his life for his friends.' Thus, then, his mother crowned him.
1:965⧉ ⤴︎
And by 'mother' he calls Judaea, according to His humanity, which gave him this crown against its will.
1:966⧉ ⤴︎
因為她用荊棘為祂戴冠,如同羞辱祂;
For she crowned him with thorns, as one dishonouring him;
1:967⧉ ⤴︎
but he, through the thorns, received the crown of love.
1:968⧉ ⤴︎
因為祂甘心忍受那羞辱,並自願走向那受難;
For he willingly endured the dishonour, and voluntarily approached the passion;
1:969⧉ ⤴︎
wherefore also he called that day the day of his espousals, and the day of the gladness of his heart.
1:970⧉ ⤴︎
the fellowship of the marriage came to pass.
1:971⧉ ⤴︎
For after supper, it says, he took bread, and having given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying:
1:972⧉ ⤴︎
「你們都拿去吃」;
'Take, eat of it, all of you;'
1:973⧉ ⤴︎
因為這是我的身體,為你們擘開,使罪得赦免;
for this is my body, which is broken for you for the remission of sins;
1:974⧉ ⤴︎
'do this in remembrance of me.' Those, then, who eat the members of the bridegroom, and drink his blood, obtain his nuptial fellowship.
1:975⧉ ⤴︎
These things having been thus spoken by them, again the bridegroom, conversing with the bride, says:
1:976⧉ ⤴︎
「看哪,我的佳偶,妳是美麗的」;
'Behold, thou art fair, my companion;'
1:977⧉ ⤴︎
'thine eyes are doves, beside thy silence.'
1:978⧉ ⤴︎
Astonished at her beauty, he says a second time:
1:979⧉ ⤴︎
「看哪,妳是美麗的。」然後祂逐一描繪她的美麗;
'Behold, thou art fair.' Then part by part he describes her beauty;
1:980⧉ ⤴︎
祂稱她的眼睛為鴿子,稱讚她們屬靈的默觀;
and he names her eyes doves, commending their spiritual contemplation;
1:981⧉ ⤴︎
And because they do not gape after things perceptible to the senses, but seek the things above, where Christ is, according to Paul, seated at the right hand of God. And he marvels also at her well-timed silence.
1:982⧉ ⤴︎
因為我們發現,這靜默甚至在古人當中也同樣受到稱讚;
For we find this praised even among the ancients as well;
1:983⧉ ⤴︎
wherefore also in the Psalms we hear:
1:984⧉ ⤴︎
'I set a guard upon my mouth while the sinner stood against me.' And in singing psalms we say:

'Set, O Lord, a guard upon my mouth, and a door of enclosure about my lips.' And we find the Lord, according to the prophecy of Isaiah, 'not opening his mouth in his humiliation,' and, according to the narrative of the Gospels, questioned by Pilate and making no answer.

The bridegroom therefore praises the bride's well-timed silence, inasmuch as he himself also made use of it at the proper time.

'Is there no balm in Gilead, or is there no physician there?' And it must be inquired whether the Word here is perhaps hinting darkly at the flock of goats as those who come from sin to repentance, and for this reason graze upon Mount Gilead, that they may obtain healing remedies and cure; and it shows that the lowly parts of the bride, her outermost members, and those that are as it were dead and without feeling, are compared to the right achievements of that flock.

'but that it should be holy and without blemish.' And she who has become the bridegroom's neighbour has become without blemish and fair, having received the flashings of light from thence, and having become radiant with light out of the Light.

And may it be granted us, beholding as in a mirror with unveiled face the glory of the Lord, to be transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord the Spirit; with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory to the Father, unto the ages of the ages.

For we have need of prayer, of prayer diligent and earnest, that our eyes may become doves, seeing spiritually, and passing beyond the veil of the letter, and clearly articulating the hidden mysteries.

Now at the end of the treatise preceding this one we heard the Bridegroom marveling at the beauty of the Bride, bestowing praise upon each several part, and thereafter extolling her as a whole, as one without blemish;

Hearken, O daughter, and behold, and incline thine ear, and forget thine own people and thy father's house; and the King shall desire thy beauty, for He is thy Lord.

But unto you that fear My name shall the Sun of righteousness arise, and healing shall be in His wings. And he adds also Mount Hermon, thereby likewise indicating the Law:
1:1067⧉ ⤴︎
As the dew of Hermon that cometh down upon the mountains of Zion—that is, the teachings of the Law bestowed upon the mountains of Zion.

And by 'mountains' we must understand those who are perfect in virtue, as being lofty and eminent, and by their divine mindedness raised on high.
1:1069⧉ ⤴︎

Accordingly the Bridegroom calls some from Lebanon, as those who had been taught to devote themselves to idols;

「從獅子的洞穴,從豹子的山嶺」:他以「獅子的洞穴」指稱那些最放肆、最狂暴的猶太人;

and by 'leopards' the wise men of the Greeks, who by the variegated character of their discourses and the artifice of their sophistries, cloaking their falsehood, made it appear plausible to the foolish.

Having thus called the Bride, and gathered her from the various mountains, and wrought her salvation through faith, and beheld the beauty that thereupon came to her, he says to her:
1:1074⧉ ⤴︎

The words 'thou hast ravished our heart,' Symmachus rendered 'thou hast emboldened us.'
1:1076⧉ ⤴︎

1:1077⧉ ⤴︎
你的兩隻眼睛實在奇妙、屬靈,並且恰當地被稱為鴿子;
Thy two eyes are indeed marvelous and spiritual, and fittingly called doves;
1:1078⧉ ⤴︎
yet he who contemplates divine things, who has been taught to speak of God, who beholds the hidden mysteries, astounds me beyond measure.
1:1079⧉ ⤴︎
我也讚嘆你頸項上一切的裝飾;
And I marvel at all the ornaments of thy neck;
1:1080⧉ ⤴︎
他藉這些暗示實踐性的美德,因為頸項既負著屬神誡命的軛,便牽引並劃開公義的犁溝;
and by these he hints at active virtue, since the neck, bearing the yoke of the divine commandments, draws and cleaves the furrows of righteousness;
1:1081⧉ ⤴︎
I praise, then, the other ornaments of virtue as well that shine upon thy neck, but I am beyond measure delighted with, and marvel at, the one; and, struck by the beauty both of the single necklace and of the eye that beholds divine things, I have been wounded by love of thee.

但讓我們探究,那設在頸項上、超乎其他的一件裝飾究竟是什麼,並讓我們從蒙福的保羅得知:如今常存的有信、有望、有愛;
But let us inquire what that one ornament is which is set upon the neck and surpasses the others, and let us learn from the blessed Paul that there abide faith, hope, love;
1:1083⧉ ⤴︎
but the greatest of all these is love. And again:
1:1084⧉ ⤴︎
But love is the fulfilling of the Law. And elsewhere:
1:1085⧉ ⤴︎
The whole Law and the prophets hang upon this: Thou shalt love thy God with all thy heart, and thy neighbor as thyself. This, then, is the necklace of the Bride which the Bridegroom marvels at.
1:1086⧉ ⤴︎

For Symmachus put 'necklace' in place of 'chain.'

for He hath clothed me with the garment of salvation, and put upon me a robe of gladness. These thy garments send forth so great a fragrance as to overcome the virtue of the Law—figuratively called 'spices'—by the sweet savor that everywhere runs forth from thy garments.

honey and milk are under thy tongue, and the smell of thy garments is as the smell of frankincense.
1:1109⧉ ⤴︎
It is necessary to set alongside these the apostolic teaching which says:
1:1110⧉ ⤴︎
就如身子是一個,卻有許多肢體,而且一個身子的肢體雖多,仍是一個身子;
For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of the one body, being many, are one body;
1:1111⧉ ⤴︎
因為我們無論是猶太人,是希臘人,是為奴的,是自主的,都從一位聖靈受洗,成了一個身體,並且都飲於一位聖靈;
for by one Spirit we all, the whole of us, were baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free, and we were all made to drink into one Spirit;
1:1112⧉ ⤴︎
因為身子原不是一個肢體,乃是許多肢體。他隨後又說:若都是一個肢體,身子在哪裡呢?他又說:你們就是基督的身子,並且各自作肢體。所以由許多肢體所組成的教會,充實成一個身體;
for the body is not one member, but many. And a little later he says: If they were all one member, where were the body? And again: Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. Therefore the Church, composed of many members, fills up one body;
1:1113⧉ ⤴︎
因此讓我們理解:她的一些肢體是眼睛,一些是耳朵,一些是嘴唇;
let us understand, then, that some of her members are eyes, some ears, some lips;
1:1114⧉ ⤴︎
wherefore the Bridegroom also says to her:
1:1115⧉ ⤴︎
新婦啊,你的嘴唇滴下蜂房的蜜;
Thy lips drop as the honeycomb, O bride;
1:1116⧉ ⤴︎
honey and milk are under thy tongue.
1:1117⧉ ⤴︎
having not only honey but also milk, and offering to each the suitable nourishment—to babes what is fitting for them, and to the perfect what is proper for them.
1:1118⧉ ⤴︎
那藏於教師嘴唇上的蜂蜜之房,就是屬神的聖經,其中作那塑造蜂房、釀造蜂蜜之蜜蜂的,乃是聖潔的先知和使徒;
And the honeycombs of the honey, borne upon the lips of the teachers, are the divine Scriptures, having as their honey-forming and comb-shaping bees the holy prophets and apostles;
1:1119⧉ ⤴︎
for they, flying about the meadows of the all-holy Spirit, having as it were fashioned the honeycombs of the divine Scriptures for us, and filled them with the honey of teaching, transmitted the benefit to us.
1:1120⧉ ⤴︎
And the letter resembles the wax, while the meaning hidden within it resembles the honey.
1:1121⧉ ⤴︎
The lips of the godly teachers let fall drops of this honey.
1:1122⧉ ⤴︎
他們也從自己的舌頭湧出乳汁,供給那些需要乳的人;
They also offer milk, borne from their tongue, to those who have need of milk;
1:1123⧉ ⤴︎
and again he continues, marvelling at the bride's garments, and says:
1:1124⧉ ⤴︎
『你衣服的香氣如乳香的香氣。』我們先前已說過,新郎自己成了她的衣裳;
'And the scent of thy garments is as the scent of frankincense.' We have said before that the Bridegroom himself became a garment to her;
1:1125⧉ ⤴︎
and the blessed Paul is witness, saying:
1:1126⧉ ⤴︎
『你們凡受洗歸入基督的,都已披戴基督。』這新郎既是先於萬世的神,又是在末後的日子從聖童貞女所生的人;
'As many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.' Now the Bridegroom is both God before the ages, and man born in the last days of the holy Virgin;
1:1127⧉ ⤴︎
and, remaining what he was, he took upon himself our nature, and clothed the bride who of old had been stripped bare.
1:1128⧉ ⤴︎
『你衣服的香氣如乳香的香氣。』因為她已披戴了基督,就是那位神而人者;
'The scent of thy garments is as the scent of frankincense;' for she has put on Christ, who is God and man;
1:1129⧉ ⤴︎
and frankincense is a symbol of the knowledge of God, since under the old law it was offered to God.
1:1130⧉ ⤴︎
『我妹子,我新婦,乃是關鎖的園、關鎖的園、封閉的泉源。』祂稱她為園,因她所結的敬虔與美德之果不止一種,而是眾多且各樣的;
'A garden enclosed is my sister, my bride; a garden enclosed, a fountain sealed.' He calls her a garden, as bringing forth not one fruit of godliness and virtue, but many and varied fruits;
1:1131⧉ ⤴︎
又稱為關鎖的,因她四圍有籬笆圍護,不受任何陰謀的侵害;
and enclosed, as being fenced round about and safe from all plotting;
1:1132⧉ ⤴︎
for 'the gates of hell,' he says, 'shall not prevail against her.' For she is not like that vine transplanted out of Egypt, 'which all they that pass by the way have plucked, and the boar out of the wood hath ravaged, and the wild solitary beast hath devoured;' but she is fenced about and walled, and resembles an enclosed garden, having fruits many and of every kind, yet not admitting thieves, but fleeing the hands of those who plot against her.
1:1133⧉ ⤴︎
'And she is also a fountain sealed;'
1:1134⧉ ⤴︎
因為這些活水不是擺在眾人面前,而是擺在那配得的人面前;
for these waters are not set before all, but before the worthy;
1:1135⧉ ⤴︎
concerning this fountain the Lord also speaks in the Gospels, saying:
1:1136⧉ ⤴︎
'Whosoever shall drink of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst unto eternity, but it shall become in him a fountain of living water springing up unto life everlasting.' Fittingly, then, he calls her a fountain sealed, as being set before not all, but the worthy.
1:1137⧉ ⤴︎
因為神聖的奧祕不是擺在未受教之人面前,而是擺在已受教之人面前;
For the divine mysteries are set before not the uninitiated, but the initiated;
1:1138⧉ ⤴︎
不是擺在受教之後仍在不法中打滾的人面前,而是擺在那些嚴謹度日、或藉悔改得潔淨之人面前;
not before those who wallow in lawless deeds after their initiation, but before those who live in strictness, or are cleansed through repentance;
1:1139⧉ ⤴︎
and he says not only, 'A garden enclosed, and a fountain sealed,' but also:
1:1140⧉ ⤴︎
'Thy shoots are an orchard of pomegranates, with the fruit of choice tree-crops;'
1:1141⧉ ⤴︎
'Spikenard and saffron, calamus and cinnamon, with all trees of Lebanon;'
1:1142⧉ ⤴︎
'myrrh and aloes, with all the chief spices.'
1:1143⧉ ⤴︎
'A fountain of gardens, a well of living water, and streams flowing rushing down from Lebanon.'
1:1144⧉ ⤴︎
'All these things,' he says, 'thou hast sent to me, and hast offered to me at the time of the wedding;'
1:1145⧉ ⤴︎
首先是那石榴園,其中也不缺別樣佳美的果樹;
and first, the orchard of pomegranates, which was not lacking in the other choice tree-crops either;
1:1146⧉ ⤴︎
這乃指愛,因為在一層皮之下,無數的子粒同處一處,彼此聯合,卻不互相擠壓,也不互相損壞,仍舊完好無損,除非其中生出腐爛;
namely love, since under one rind countless grains lie together in the same place, united to one another, yet do not press one another out nor destroy one another, remaining sound unless some rottenness should arise in their midst;
