1:1283
But if 'newness' is a quality, it does not signify one energy, but the new and ineffable manner of the manifestation of Christ's natural energies, corresponding fittingly to the ineffable manner of the mutual interpenetration of Christ's natures into one another; and it signifies his manner of life according to man, which is strange and paradoxical and unknown to the nature of beings, and the manner of the exchange [of properties] according to the ineffable union.
1:1284
Nor does 'the theandric [energy]' signify one energy.
1:1285
恰恰相反,此語詞乃以迂迴陳述的方式,藉由被數算、區分的諸本性,傳達了各本性自身的運作;
On the contrary, this expression, by way of periphrasis, has conveyed, through the natures being numbered, their respective energies;
1:1286
since, given that there is no middle term between the two extremes, there is nothing intermediate in the case of Christ.
1:1287
But if it signifies one energy, then Christ, as God, will have an energy other than the Father's.
1:1288
如此,聖子便將有異於聖父的運作;
The Son, then, will be of an energy other than the Father's;
1:1289
since the Father's energy is not theandric.
1:1290
For energy, being natural, is a constitutive and innate character of nature.
1:1291
And those who have treated the inquiries concerning these matters have said that [essence] is one genus distinct from quantity, and another distinct from quality.
1:1292
「新穎」既非數量,也非性質;
'Newness' is neither quantity nor quality;
1:1293
I am amazed that you dared to say this.
1:1294
What, then, is set in contrast to essence?
1:1295
So then, 'newness' is not essence, but quality.
1:1296
But how, if we should take the expression to mean one energy, would we not be making this God-revealing teacher contradict both himself and the rest of the Fathers?
1:1297
因為眾教父皆明白一致地宣告並教導:凡屬同一本質者,亦屬同一運作;
For all of them expressly and with one accord both said and taught that things which are of the same essence are also of the same energy;
1:1298
且凡屬同一運作者,亦屬同一本質;
and that things which are of the same energy are of the same essence;
1:1299
又凡在本質上有別者,在運作上亦有別;
and that things which differ in essence also differ in energy;
1:1300
and that things which differ in energy also differ in essence.
1:1301
This was said by the Fathers concerning theology, but certainly not concerning the economy.
1:1302
Hence it does not belong to a truth-loving mind to transfer what was said by them concerning theology over to the economy, and thereby introduce such an absurdity.
1:1303
If it was said by the Fathers only concerning theology, then, according to you, the Son is not co-theologized with the Father after the incarnation.
1:1304
但若祂不與聖父一同被稱頌為神,祂在洗禮的呼求中也就不與聖父同列共數了;
But if he is not co-theologized, neither is he numbered together with the Father in the invocation of baptism;
1:1305
and the faith and the preaching will be found empty.
1:1306
再者,若道成肉身之後聖子不與聖父一同被稱頌為神,祂也就不與聖父同本質;
And again, if the Son is not co-theologized with the Father after the incarnation, neither will he be of the same essence;
1:1307
for things that differ in definition will certainly also differ in nature.
1:1308
And again, if the Son is not co-theologized with the Father after the incarnation, to whom shall we assign the saying, 'My Father is working until now, and I am working'?
1:1309
Whatever things he sees the Father doing, these the Son likewise does.
1:1310
If you do not believe me, believe my works.
1:1311
The works that I do bear witness concerning me.
1:1312
Just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whomever he wills.
1:1313
For all these sayings show him, even after the incarnation, to be not only of the same essence as the Father, but also of the same energy.
1:1314
再者,若對萬有的眷佑乃是神的一種運作;
And again, if the providence exercised over beings happens to be an energy of God;
1:1315
而此運作不僅屬於聖父與聖靈,即使道成肉身之後,也仍屬於聖子;
and this belongs not only to the Father and the Spirit, but also to the Son even after the incarnation;
1:1316
then he is also of the same energy as the Father even after the incarnation.
1:1317
再者,若神蹟乃是神的一種運作;
And again, if the miracles happen to be an energy of God;
1:1318
而我們正是從這些神蹟得知祂與聖父同本質;
and from the miracles we have come to know him to be of the same essence as the Father;
1:1319
那麼,祂正是憑藉同一運作,而被證明與聖父同本質;
then it was from the same energy that he, being of the same essence as the Father, was shown to be so;
1:1320
and he is co-theologized with him even after the incarnation.
1:1321
再者,若創造性的運作本質上屬於神;
And again, if the creative energy belongs essentially to God;
1:1322
而凡本質上所固有者,亦是不可剝奪的;
and things that belong essentially are also inalienable;
1:1323
那麼他們就必須:若不承認祂在道成肉身之後仍與聖父同運作,也就不能承認祂與聖父同本質;
it is necessary that they either, by not saying that he is of the same energy as the Father even after the incarnation, also not say that he is of the same essence as him;
1:1324
因為依本性而有的運作若不在,本性也就絕不可能存在;
for where the operation according to nature is not, neither can the nature ever be;
1:1325
或者,若承認祂與聖父同本質,就也必須承認祂與聖父同運作,並在道成肉身之後仍將祂與聖父一同稱頌為神;
or, by saying that he is of the same essence as him, must also say that he is of the same energy, and confess him together with the Father as God even after the incarnation;
1:1326
for where the nature is, there also the common energy that accords with it will unfailingly be.
1:1327
我們說「一個運作」,並非為了取消人性的運作;
We do not speak of the one energy for the abolition of the human energy;
1:1328
but because the nature, when set in contrast to the divine energy, is on that account called 'passion.'
1:1329
依此同一道理,那些主張「一本性」之人,也並非為了取消人性而如此主張;
By this same reasoning, those who speak of one nature likewise do not say this for the abolition of the human [nature];
1:1330
but because the nature, when set in contrast to the divine, is on that account called 'passible.'
1:1331
It was not in contrast to the divine energy that the Fathers named the human movement 'passion.'
1:1332
因為,概括而言,沒有任何事物的存在,是藉由並列或比較而被認識或界定的;
For, generally speaking, the existence of nothing is known or defined from juxtaposition, or from comparison;
1:1333
otherwise, in this way, things would be found to be the causes of one another.
1:1334
For if, because the divine movement is 'energy,' the human [movement] is 'passion,'
1:1335
then surely, because the divine nature is good, the human [nature] will also be evil.
1:1336
同樣地,反過來說,也因人性的運動被稱為「受動」,神聖的運動便被稱為「運作」;
And likewise, conversely, because the human movement is called 'passion,' the divine movement is called 'energy';
1:1337
and because the human nature is evil, the divine will be good.
1:1338
For these things are truly the mark of great folly.
1:1339
The Fathers did not name the human movement 'passion' [in this sense].
1:1340
They named it in many ways, evidently according to the underlying senses [intended].
1:1341
他們也稱它為「能力」、「運作」、「差異」、「運動」、「特性」、「性質」,以及「受動」——並非用以與神聖的〔運動〕相對立區別;
They called it also 'power,' and 'energy,' and 'difference,' and 'movement,' and 'property,' and 'quality,' and 'passion' — not in contradistinction to the divine [movement];
1:1342
而是就其具凝聚性、不變性而言,〔稱〕之為「能力」;
but, as being cohesive and unchangeable, [they called it] 'power';
1:1343
就其具特徵性、並顯明凡同類事物中皆一致不變而言,〔稱〕之為「運作」;
and, as being characteristic and manifesting the invariability present in all things of the same kind, [they called it] 'energy';
1:1344
就其具區分界定之性而言,〔稱〕之為「差異」;
and, as being determinative, [they called it] 'difference';
1:1345
就其具指示顯明之性而言,〔稱〕之為「運動」;
and, as being indicative, [they called it] 'movement';
1:1346
就其具構成之性,且唯獨屬於它、不屬於他者而言,〔稱〕之為「特性」;
and, as being constitutive, and belonging to it alone and to no other, [they called it] 'property';
1:1347
and, as being species-defining, [they called it] 'quality.'
1:1348
因為凡出於神、以及在神以後的萬有,都因被運動而受動,因為它們並非自我運動、或自我能力;
For all things that are from God, and after God, undergo [something] by being moved, since they are not self-movement, or self-power;
1:1349
not, then, in contradistinction, as has been said, but on account of the principle creatively implanted in them by the Cause that constituted the universe.
1:1350
Whence also, pronouncing it together with the divine [movement], they called it 'energy.'
1:1351
For the one who said, 'It operates in each form in communion with the other' — what else has he done [than this]?
1:1352
因為祂實在禁食四十天之後,隨後就餓了;
For indeed, having remained without food for forty days, he afterward hungered;
1:1353
for did he not grant to [his] nature, when he willed, to perform its own operations? Or [is this not what] those who spoke of a distinct energy of his [meant]?
1:1354
Or those who spoke of a twofold [energy]? Or those who spoke of one [energy] and another?
1:1355
In truth, the inquiry concerning the energies has also shown that the 'one energy,' in whatever way it is spoken of Christ, is absurd.
1:1356
But I ask pardon, both for myself and for those who came before [me].
1:1357
因為我們是出於無知,才被帶入這些荒謬的見解與作為之中;
For out of ignorance we were carried away into these absurd notions and undertakings;
1:1358
and I entreat [you] to find a way, so that this imported absurdity may be abolished, and the memory of those who came before [us] may be preserved.
1:1359
別無他法,唯有對有關人士略而不提;
There is no other way, than that the persons be passed over in silence;
1:1360
but that such doctrines be anathematized.
1:1361
But if this is done, Sergius, and the synod that took place concerning me, will be found to be cast out along with them.
1:1362
我不禁感到驚異:您怎能將那既不依照會議法規教規、亦不依照教會制度而舉行的集會,稱之為「大公會議」;
I cannot but marvel how you call 'synod' that which was held neither according to synodal laws and canons, nor according to ecclesiastical statutes;
1:1363
因為那通諭書信既非經由眾牧首同意而發出;
for neither was the encyclical letter issued with the consent of the patriarchs;
1:1364
nor was a place or day of meeting appointed.
1:1365
There was no one to bring in [the case], nor any accuser.
1:1366
Those who assembled had no letters of introduction — neither did the bishops have them from the metropolitans, nor the metropolitans from the patriarchs. No letters or legates were sent from the other patriarchs.
1:1367
Who, then, endowed with reason, would endure to call 'synod' that which has filled the whole inhabited world with scandals and dissension?
1:1368
若除此之外別無他法——我寧可以自己的救恩為先於一切——我已預備好懷著十足的確信這樣做;
If there is no other way than this — preferring my own salvation above all things — I am ready to do this with full conviction;
1:1369
asking [only] one thing, that I may be deemed worthy —
1:1370
首先,得以〔朝拜〕使徒的聖龕;
first, of [visiting] the apostolic shrines;
1:1371
更確切地說,得以親自敬拜眾使徒之首;
or rather, of the veneration of the chief apostles themselves;
1:1372
最後,也得以親眼面見至聖教宗;
and finally, also of the sight, face to face, of the most holy Pope;
1:1373
and to present to him a petition concerning the things that were wrongly done.
1:1374
When he had said these things, Maximus and Gregory the patrician said:
1:1375
Since your proposal is good, and beneficial to the Church, so let it also be done.
1:1376
於是他便與我們一同來到這座聲名顯赫的羅馬城,履行了他的承諾;
Having come, then, together with us to this famous city of the Romans, he fulfilled the promise;
1:1377
定了那不虔敬的《信條說明》之教義的罪;
condemning the doctrines of the impious Ekthesis;
1:1378
and uniting himself, through orthodox confession, to the holy, catholic and apostolic Church, by the grace and cooperation of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, to whom be glory unto the ages of ages. Amen.
1:1379
論靈魂。首先,我要提出:靈魂本性上是藉何種判準而被領悟的;
ON THE SOUL. First of all, I shall propose by what criterion the soul is by nature apprehended;
1:1380
其次,是藉何種途徑顯明它確實存在;
then, by what means it is shown to exist;
1:1381
再者,它究竟是一個本質,還是一個偶性;
then next, whether it happens to be an essence, or an accident;
1:1382
接著,依此而下,它是單純的,還是複合的;
then, following upon these, whether it is simple, or composite;
1:1383
再其次,它是必死的,還是不死的;
then again, whether it is mortal, or immortal;
1:1384
and finally, whether it is rational, or irrational.
1:1385
For these are the questions most commonly investigated in the discourse 'On the Soul,' as being the most essential, and able to characterize its property.
1:1386
As proofs for the confirmation of the matters examined, we shall employ the common notions, by which the credibility of the matters at hand is naturally attested.
1:1387
But for the sake of brevity and usefulness, we shall now employ, as our syllogisms, only those [premises] pertaining to the necessary point of the inquiry that have (not) [further] proof [of their own], so that, becoming clear and easily handled notions, they may produce in us a certain readiness for meeting those who oppose [us].
1:1388
Let us, then, begin our discourse from this point.
1:1389
What is the apprehending criterion of the soul?
1:1390
All existing things are either known by sense-perception, or apprehended by intellection.
1:1391
凡落於感官知覺範圍之內者,感官知覺本身即是充分的證明;
And that which falls under sense-perception has sense-perception itself as sufficient proof;
1:1392
因為在接觸的同時,它便在我們裡面產生了那對象的表象;
for together with the impression, it also produces in us the image of the underlying object;
1:1393
but that which is apprehended by intellection is known not from itself, but from its contraries.
1:1394
The soul, then, being unknowable [in itself], will reasonably be known not from itself, but from its effects.
1:1395
Our body, when it moves, is moved either from without, or from within.
1:1396
And that it is not moved from without is clear from the fact that it is moved neither by being pushed nor by being pulled, as inanimate things [are].
1:1397
再者,它若由內而動,也不是像火那樣按本性而動;
And again, when moved from within, it is not moved naturally, as fire [is moved];
1:1398
for that [fire] does not cease to be moved so long as it is fire, whereas the body, having become a corpse, does not move, [though] still being a body.
1:1399
Therefore, if it is moved neither from without, as inanimate things [are], nor naturally, as fire [is], it is clear that it is moved by the soul, which also provides it with life.

1:1402
Since the soul is shown to be that which supplies life to our body, the soul in itself will be known from its contraries.
1:1403
That it is indeed an essence is demonstrated thus:
1:1404
First, because the definition of essence might fittingly be applied also to it, since essence is defined thus: that which, remaining the same and one in number, is receptive of contraries successively.
1:1405
That the soul, without departing from its own nature, admits contraries successively, is evident to all.
1:1406
Temperance and intemperance are observed in it as contraries.
1:1407
既然依次領受對立之物乃本質之特性;
If, then, it is a property of essence to be receptive of contraries successively;
1:1408
and the soul is shown to admit this same definition, the soul is therefore an essence.
1:1409
Furthermore, since the body too is an essence, the soul must of necessity also be an essence.
1:1410
For it cannot be that the thing being given life possesses essence
1:1411
而那賦予生命者卻無本質;
while that which gives life is without essence;
1:1412
除非有人聲稱非存在竟是存在之因;
unless one should say that even non-being is the cause of being;
1:1413
or again, only a man out of his mind would say that the thing which has its very existence in another, and which cannot exist apart from that being, is the cause of that in which it exists.
1:1414
Whether the Soul Is Incorporeal
1:1415
That the soul is in the body has been shown above.
1:1416
倘若靈魂與身體相鄰而置,如卵石與卵石相並,則靈魂便會是一物體;
And if it lies adjacent to it as pebble to pebble, then the soul would be a body;
1:1417
但如此一來,全身便不會是有靈魂的;
but then the whole body would not be ensouled;
1:1418
for it would lie only alongside some one part.
1:1419
But if it is mixed or blended with the body, the soul would have to be called composed of many parts, and not simple, and would thereby be excluded from the very definition of soul.
1:1420
因為多部分組成者必可分割,而可分割者必可分解;
For that which is made of many parts is also divisible, and that which is divisible is also dissoluble;
1:1421
而可分解者乃是複合的;
and that which is dissoluble is composite;
1:1422
而複合者乃是具三度延展者;
and that which is composite is extended in three dimensions;
1:1423
而具三度延展者即是物體;
and that which is extended in three dimensions is a body;
1:1424
and body added to body produces bulk.
1:1425
然而靈魂雖在身體之中,卻不產生體積,反倒賦予生命;
But the soul, being in the body, does not produce bulk, but rather gives life;
1:1426
therefore the soul cannot be a body, but is incorporeal.
1:1427
再者,若靈魂是物體,則它必或從內部被推動,或從外部被推動;
Furthermore, if the soul were a body, it would be moved either from within or from without;
1:1428
然而靈魂不像無生命之物那樣被推或被拉;
for it is not pushed or dragged like inanimate things;
1:1429
也不像有生命之物那樣從內部被推動;
nor is it moved from within as animate things are;
1:1430
for it is absurd to speak of a soul's having a soul.
1:1431
又,若靈魂是物體,則它也應具有可感的性質,並且需要營養滋養;
And again, if the soul were a body, it would also have sensible qualities, and would be nourished;
1:1432
而若它受滋養,也非如身體那般以有形方式受滋養,而是以無形方式受滋養;
and if it is nourished, it is not nourished bodily as the body is, but incorporeally;
1:1433
Therefore it does not have sensible qualities.
1:1434
For neither justice, nor courage, nor anything of that sort is visible.
1:1435
因為這些正是靈魂的性質;
For these are qualities of the soul;
1:1436
因為一切物體皆是複合的;
for every body is composite;
1:1437
而複合之物乃由諸部分組成;
that which is composed is composed of parts;
1:1438
故靈魂亦不會是多部分組成的;
it would therefore not be composed of many parts either;
1:1439
and being incorporeal, it is simple, since it is also non-composite.
1:1440
我認為,不朽必然隨單純性而來;
I think it necessary that immortality follows upon simplicity;
1:1441
For nothing that exists is destructive of itself, since otherwise it would not even have come into being in the first place.
1:1442
For things that perish, perish by their contraries.
1:1443
而可分解者乃是複合的;
and that which is dissoluble is composite;
1:1444
而複合者乃多部分組成;
and that which is composite is composed of many parts;
1:1445
而由諸部分組成者,顯然是由彼此不同的部分組成;
and that which is composed of parts is evidently composed of differing parts;
1:1446
而彼此相異者即非同一;
and that which differs is not the same as another;
1:1447
the soul, being simple and not composed of differing parts — being non-composite and indissoluble — will therefore be imperishable and immortal.
1:1448
And again, that which is moved by another, not possessing its vital principle from itself but from the mover, would persist only so long as it is sustained by the power that acts upon it.
1:1449
But whenever the operating power ceases, that thing too dissolves.
1:1450
但那不因他物而動、卻自身具有運動者——如靈魂即為自動者——則永不止息其存在;
But that which is not moved by another, but has motion from itself — as the soul is self-moved — never ceases to exist;
1:1451
for being ever-moving follows upon being self-moved.
1:1452
And that which is ever-moving will be unceasing.
1:1453
And that which is unceasing is without end.
1:1454
而無終盡者,即不朽壞;
And that which is without end is imperishable;
1:1455
If, then, the soul is self-moved, as was demonstrated above, it will be imperishable, according to the syllogism here proposed.
1:1456
又,若凡朽壞之物皆因其自身之惡而朽壞;
And again, if everything that perishes, perishes by its own vice;
1:1457
則凡不因自身之惡而朽壞者,必是不朽壞的;
then that which is not destroyed by its own vice will be imperishable;
1:1458
因為惡乃善之對立,故亦是善之毀滅者;
for evil is the contrary of the good, and is therefore also destructive of it;
1:1459
For the vice of the body is nothing other than suffering, disease, and death, just as its virtue is beauty, life, health, and good bodily condition.
1:1460
既然靈魂不因自身之惡而朽壞;
If, then, the soul is not destroyed by its own vice;
1:1461
而靈魂之惡即是怯懦、放縱、嫉妒,以及諸如此類;
and the vice of the soul is cowardice, intemperance, envy, and the like;
1:1462
and none of these deprives it of its living and its being in motion, the soul is therefore immortal.
1:1463
至於我們的靈魂是有理性的,人可從諸多論據證明之;
And that our soul is rational, one might demonstrate from many proofs;
1:1464
and first, from the fact that it is the soul which has discovered the arts that are useful for life.
1:1465
For one could not simply say that the arts arose as though by mere chance, since chance would show them to be, from the very outset, without foundation and useless for life.
1:1466
既然技藝有助於生活之所需;
If, then, the arts contribute to what is useful for life;
1:1467
而有用之物乃值得稱許的;
and the useful is praiseworthy;
1:1468
而值得稱許之物,乃由理性所建構;
and the praiseworthy is constructed by reason;
1:1469
Then also, from the fact that our senses are sufficient for the apprehension of things, our soul is proven to be rational.
1:1470
For we are not content, in coming to know beings, with the mere impression of sense-perception alone, since we do not wish to be deceived concerning them.
1:1471
For instance, things equal in shape and similar in color, yet distinguished in nature, sense-perception, being irrational, is too weak to discern.
1:1472
若感官既屬非理性,便使我們對存有之物產生虛假的表象,那麼我們就當思考:這些事物究竟是否可被把握;
If, then, the senses, being irrational, produce in us a false appearance of things, we must consider whether things are comprehensible;
1:1473
and if they are indeed comprehensible, there will be another faculty, superior to the senses, by which the apprehension of them is attained.
1:1474
But if they are not apprehended, then we shall have no way of showing that things are perceived otherwise than as they truly are.
1:1475
That things are comprehensible is clear from the fact that we make fitting use of each one for what is useful, and again refashion it into what we wish.
1:1476
Since, then, existing things have been shown to be comprehensible to us, while the senses, being irrational, form false opinions, it will be the intellect that discerns all things and truly knows all things as they are.
1:1477
而理智,即靈魂中理性的部分;
And the intellect is the rational part of the soul;
1:1478
Moreover, we bring nothing into action which we have not first outlined within ourselves.
1:1479
And this is nothing other than the dignity of the soul.
1:1480
因為理智並非從外而至於靈魂,對存有之物的知識亦然;
For the intellect does not come to it from outside, nor does the knowledge of existing things;
1:1481
but the soul itself, as it were, orders existing things by the conceptions that proceed from it,
1:1482
and then thus brings them forth into action.
1:1483
And the dignity of the soul is nothing other than doing all things with reason.
1:1484
因為正由此已顯明,靈魂也在此點上異於感官;
For it has been shown that in this respect it differs also from the senses;
1:1485
[The soul is] an incorporeal, intellective essence, dwelling as a citizen within a body, cause of life.
1:1486
[The intellect is] the purest and most rational part of the soul, directed to the contemplation of things that exist, including those already apprehended.
1:1487
[The faculties are] the soul's operations, moving consequently toward some one of the things that exist.
1:1488
[Habit is] a disposition of the soul acquired from custom.
1:1489
[The sense-organ is] an instrument of the soul, a faculty apprehensive of external sense-objects.
1:1490
[...is] a shapeless essence, preceding all motion.
1:1491
The end of the treatise of the blessed monk Maximus, On the Soul.
1:1492
我藉由我那蒙神庇佑的主上所寄來的、備受讚譽的書信,親自迎接了他的到臨;
I received my God-protected lord himself, arriving through his all-laudable letters;
1:1493
他實乃常在之人,就靈而言絕無可能全然缺席;
him who is indeed ever present, and who cannot in spirit be absent at all;
1:1494
yet, through abundance of virtue, in a manner imitating God, he associates with his servants, and does not refuse the occasion which God has granted to nature.
1:1495
而我從畏懼與渴慕二者,建立了唯一的愛,此愛乃由敬畏與善意所構成;
And I have established a single love out of both fear and longing, constituted through reverence and good will;
1:1496
使畏懼若失去了渴慕,就不致淪為憎恨;渴慕若不與清醒的畏懼相結合,也不致淪為輕慢;
so that fear, stripped of longing, may not become hatred, nor longing, lacking the sober fear joined to it, become contempt;
1:1497
而是要顯明:愛乃是法則本身,是內具於摯愛之中的法則,使一切依本性而親近之物皆歸屬於己;
but that love, being truly a law, may be shown to be an inward law of affection, making its own all that is naturally akin;
1:1498
藉著善意制伏憎恨;
through good will subduing hatred;
1:1499
又藉著敬畏,使輕慢遠離;
and through reverence, keeping contempt far away;
1:1500
「敬畏主乃是純潔的,直到永永遠遠長存」;
"The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring for ever and ever";
1:1501
顯然知悉此乃有別於因罪愆而生、出於畏懼刑罰的那種恐懼;
knowing this, namely, to be other than the fear which arises from dread of punishment for offenses;
1:1502
since the latter is cast out, utterly abolished by the presence of love, as the great evangelist John shows somewhere in his own words, saying:
1:1503
「愛把懼怕驅逐於外」;
"Love casts out fear";
1:1504
而另一種恐懼,則自然地標誌出真摯摯愛之法則的特質;
whereas the other naturally characterizes the law of true affection;
1:1505
藉著敬畏,使聖徒們無論對神或彼此之間,愛的規範與方式得以永遠保持全然不朽壞;
preserving through reverence, for ever, for the saints, both toward God and toward one another, the ordinance and manner of love wholly uncorrupted.
1:1506
因敬畏而受阻於書寫,恐怕輕慢有機可乘;
restrained by reverence from writing, lest contempt find a place;
1:1507
yet impelled by good will toward writing, lest complete refusal to write be taken for hatred.
1:1508
於是我書寫,是因奉命行此事,而非依我自己的思量;
I write, then, being bidden to do this, not what I myself reckon;
1:1509
因為按聖經所言:「世人的思念是怯懦的」;
for "the reasonings of men are timid," according to Scripture;
1:1510
but what God wills, and what by grace He grants toward the production of what is beneficial,
1:1511
「……祂心中的意念,直到萬代」;
"...of his heart, unto generation and generation";
1:1512
或許可將神與父的「籌算」理解為:獨生子那不可言喻的虛己(κένωσις),為要使我們的本性得以神化;依此籌算,萬世的終結乃被界定;
calling, perhaps, the "counsel" of God the Father the ineffable self-emptying of the only-begotten Son unto the deification of our nature, according to which the end of all the ages is understood to be determined;
1:1513
而「祂心中的意念」,則可理解為攝理與審判之道;
and "the thoughts of his heart" as the principles of providence and of judgment;
1:1514
according to which He wisely conducts both our present life and the life to come, as it were certain different generations, allotting to each its own fitting mode of operation.
1:1515
If, then, the deification of our nature is a work of the divine counsel,
1:1516
且神聖意念之目的,乃是將我們生命中所求索之事引導至其終末;
and the aim of the divine thoughts is the conducting, unto its end, of the things sought after in our life;
1:1517
then it is profitable to know and to practice, and thus fittingly to set down in writing, the meaning of the Lord's Prayer.
1:1518
因為主禱文以概括的方式,完整含藏著前文所述之目的,神秘地隱含於其中;
For it contains in its entirety, in summary, the aim that has been described, mystically hidden;
1:1519
or, to speak more properly, that aim is openly proclaimed to those who are sound in mind.
1:1520
因為就一切藉肉身親自成就之事而言,神的道既已虛己,禱文之言辭中即含有祈求,教導我們去領受那些美善之事——唯獨神與父,藉著在聖靈中依本性作中保的聖子,才是真正的賜予者;
For of all that the Word of God, having emptied Himself, became through the flesh the direct worker of, the wording of the prayer contains a petition, teaching us to lay claim to those good things of which God and Father alone, through the Son who by nature mediates in the Holy Spirit, is in truth the provider;
1:1521
因為按神聖使徒所言,主耶穌乃是神與人之間的中保;
since, according to the divine Apostle, the Lord Jesus is the mediator between God and men;
1:1522
祂藉著肉身,向世人彰顯那先前不為人知的父;
making manifest to men, through the flesh, the Father who was unknown;
1:1523
又藉著聖靈,將在祂自身內與神和好的世人引至於父;
and presenting to the Father, through the Spirit, mankind reconciled in Himself;
1:1524
為了他們、也為了他們的緣故,祂不變地成為人,成為諸般新奧秘的親自成就者與教師——這些奧秘的數量與偉大,至今尚無任何言語能夠盡述其度量;
on behalf of whom, and for whose sake, having become man without change, He becomes the direct worker and teacher of new mysteries, whose multitude and magnitude no reasoning has yet been able to comprehend in measure;
1:1525
其中有七項,數目而言,較其餘者更具總括性,祂已藉特殊的慷慨恩賜,向世人彰顯並賜予;
of which He has, by a special generosity, been shown to have bestowed upon men seven that are more generic in number than the rest;
1:1526
這些奧秘之意涵,正如我所言,禱文之目的神秘地將之含攝於內;
the meaning of which, as I said, the aim of the prayer mystically contains;
1:1527
theology, adoption in grace, equality of honor with the angels, participation in eternal life, the restoration of nature inclining dispassionately toward itself, the abolition of the law of sin, and the overthrow of the tyranny of the evil one who held us in his power through deceit.
1:1528
Let us, then, consider the truth of what has been said.
1:1529
For the Word of God, becoming incarnate, teaches theology, as showing in Himself the Father and the Holy Spirit,
1:1530
因為父完全地、聖靈也完全地,在本質上完整地臨在於道成肉身的子之全體,然而父與聖靈本身並未成為肉身;
for the Father was wholly, and the Holy Spirit wholly, essentially present in the whole Son perfectly, even as He became incarnate — though they themselves did not become incarnate;
1:1531
而是父喜悅應許,聖靈協同運作,由子親自成就此道成肉身之事;
but rather, the one being well-pleased, and the other cooperating, while it was the Son Himself who accomplished the incarnation;
1:1532
since the Word remained intelligent and living, and was in no way at all contained essentially by any other than the Father and the Spirit alone, and effected, out of love for mankind, a union with the flesh according to hypostasis.
1:1533
而祂賜予義子名分,乃是從上藉聖靈、在恩典中賜下一種超乎本性的重生;
And He gives adoption, bestowing from above, through the Spirit, in grace, a birth that transcends nature;
1:1534
而在神之中,此重生之守護與保全,端賴那些新生者的抉擇(προαίρεσις);
the guarding and preservation of which, in God, is the free choice of those who are thus born;
1:1535
以真誠的意向珍愛所賜下的恩典,並藉著勤勉遵行誡命,來妝點因恩典所賜的美善;
which choice, with genuine disposition, embraces the grace given, and through the diligent practice of the commandments, adorns the beauty granted by grace;
1:1536
and, by the emptying of the passions, lays claim to divinity to the same degree that the Word of God, having in His dispensation, according to His will, emptied Himself of His own unsullied glory, truly became and was called man.
1:1537
至於[與天使同等的]尊榮:祂已彰顯,在神聖恩賜的分授上,地上與天上諸能力(δυνάμεις,天使)乃同屬一個節慶集會;
As for the powers: He showed there to be a single festal assembly of both earthly and heavenly powers for the distribution of divine gifts;
1:1538
人的本性懷著歡欣,按同一個意志(θέλημα),與上界諸能力一同齊聲頌揚神的榮耀;
human nature, in exultation, according to one and the same will, resounding together with the powers above in the glory of God;
1:1539
而且,在為我們成就的救世計畫(οἰκονομία)完成之後,祂帶著所取的身體被接升天,藉著自己使天與地合而為一;
but also that, even after the fulfillment of the dispensation on our behalf, having been taken up together with the body which He had assumed, He united heaven and earth through Himself;
1:1540
and joined sensible things to intelligible things, and showed the created nature to be one, bound together with itself in the extremities of its own parts, according to virtue and the knowledge of the First Cause;
1:1541
我認為,藉著他所奧祕成就的,顯明理性乃是分離之物的合一;
Showing, I think, through what he mystically accomplished, that reason is the union of things divided;
1:1542
而非理性乃是合一之物的分裂;
and that irrationality is the division of things united;
1:1543
and let us learn to make reason our own through practice, so that we may be united not only with the angels according to virtue, but also with God, in a manner of knowledge, according to the abstraction of beings
1:1544
祂使自己成為可食之物,藉此傳授神聖生命的分施,一如祂自己所知;而那些從祂領受了如此屬靈知覺的人,也藉此得知——因著品嚐此食,按真實的認知而知曉:主是良善的,以神聖的性質使食用者轉化,趨向於天主化;
And he grants a share of divine life, making himself edible, as he himself knows, and those who from him have received such spiritual perception, so that by the tasting of this food they may know, in truth and full knowledge, that the Lord is good, mingling by a divine quality, unto deification, those who eat;
1:1545
such being he clearly is, and is called, the bread of life and power
1:1546
而祂使本性復歸於己身,不僅在於祂成為人時,使自己的意志抉擇免於激情、且對本性保持不動搖;
And he restores nature to itself, not only in that, having become man, he kept his gnomic will free of passion and unshaken with respect to nature;
1:1547
甚至面對那些將祂釘上十字架的人,本性固有的根基也絲毫未曾動搖;
nor at all shaken from the foundation proper to nature, even toward those who crucified him;
1:1548
反倒選擇為他們捨命而非求生;
but rather, on the contrary, choosing death on their behalf instead of life;
1:1549
依此也顯明了苦難的自願性,由受苦者仁愛的心懷所確證;
in accordance with which the voluntary character of the Passion is also shown, being confirmed by the loving disposition of the one who suffered;
1:1550
更在於祂廢除了仇恨,將罪的字據釘在十字架上,本性正是因此與自身進行著不可和解的戰爭;
but also that he abolished the enmity, nailing to the cross the handwriting of sin, on account of which nature waged implacable war against itself;
1:1551
並召叫遠方的人與近處的人,亦即律法之下的人與律法之外的人;
and calling both those far off and those near, namely those under the law and those outside the law;
1:1552
並拆毀隔斷的牆,亦即在教義中闡明誡命的律法;
and breaking down the dividing wall of the fence, that is, clarifying the law of the commandments in [right] doctrines;
1:1553
祂將二者造成一個新人,藉自己使我們與父和好,也彼此和好,使意志抉擇不再與本性之理相抗衡;
he created the two into one new man, making peace and reconciling us through himself to the Father, and to one another, no longer having the gnomic will set in opposition to the principle of nature;
1:1554
but, just as in nature, so also being unchangeable in gnomic will
1:1555
祂又使本性潔淨、脫離罪的律法,不容許享樂先於祂為我們所行的成肉身;
And he establishes nature pure of the law of sin, not permitting pleasure to precede his incarnation on our behalf;
1:1556
因為祂的受孕竟奇妙地無需種子,祂的誕生也超乎本性地不朽壞;
for the conception came about, paradoxically, without seed, and the birth, beyond nature, was incorrupt;
1:1557
蓋那受生的天主,藉著誕生反使祂母親貞潔的束縛比本性所能更為緊束;
the God who was born drawing tight upon his mother, beyond nature, the bonds of virginity through his birth;
1:1558
and freeing all nature, in those who are willing, from the dominion of the law that had prevailed [over it], by the sense-perceptible mortification of the members that are upon the earth, imitating his own voluntary death
1:1559
For the mystery of salvation belongs to those who are willing, not to those who are coerced
1:1560
祂又廢除了那藉欺詐制伏我們的惡者的暴政,以在亞當裡曾被征服的肉身作為攻擊他的武器,並得勝;
And he brings about the destruction of the tyranny of the evil one who, through deceit, had mastered us, putting forward against him, as a weapon, the flesh that had been conquered in Adam, and conquering [him];
1:1561
為要顯明那先前被擄至死的肉身,如今擄獲了那擄掠者,並以自然的死亡毀滅了那者的生命;
so that he might show that the [flesh] which had formerly been captured unto death captured its captor, and by natural death destroyed that one's life;
1:1562
這肉身於他竟成了毒藥,使那憑己力所吞噬的一切人,他這掌死權者不得不盡數嘔吐出來;
and became, for him, a poison, so that all whom he had, by his power, swallowed, he was compelled to vomit up, as one who held the dominion of death;
1:1563
but life for the race of men, pushing all nature, like a lump [of dough], toward the resurrection of life — for the sake of which the Word, though being especially God, becomes man (a thing and a report truly strange indeed), and willingly accepts the death of the flesh
1:1564
Of all these things, as I said, the discourse of the prayer will be found to hold the petition
1:1565
因為它論及父、父的名、以及國度;
For it speaks of the Father, and the name of the Father, and the kingdom;
1:1566
and again, in grace, it presents the one who prays as being a son of this same Father
1:1567
And it seeks that those in heaven and on earth may come to be of one will
1:1568
It bids [us] to ask for the daily bread
1:1569
It legislates reconciliation for men, and binds nature to itself by forgiving and being forgiven, [nature] not being cut apart by the difference of gnomic will
1:1570
它又教導我們祈求不要陷入試探,如同陷入罪的律法;
And it teaches [us] to pray not to enter into temptation, as into the law of sin;
1:1571
and it exhorts [us] to be delivered from the evil one
1:1572
For it was fitting that he who is himself the author and giver of good things should also be the teacher, providing, as to disciples, to those who believe in him and imitate his manner of life through the flesh, the very words of this prayer as precepts for [this present] life, through which he disclosed the hidden treasures of wisdom and knowledge that subsist in him according to form, driving forward the desire of those who ask, evidently unto their enjoyment [of these treasures]
1:1573
因為我等蒙天主默感的教父們,正是如此明確論述祈禱:他們說,祈禱乃是求取那些天主按其本性、以合乎自己之方式賜予人類的事物;
For thus our God-inspired Fathers have set forth definitively concerning prayer, saying that prayer is the petition for those things which God, in a manner befitting himself, is by nature disposed to grant to men;
