1:588
正如他從受孕之始便成了一個完全的嬰孩,身體並非漸漸被構造成形、被組織起來的——正如偉大的巴西流在《論聖誕日》講道中所說——照樣,他從受孕之始,就在人性與神性的智慧上是完全的,也就是說,作為人而言;
for just as from the very moment of conception he became a perfect infant, the body not being gradually articulated and organized bit by bit — as the great Basil says in his homily on the Nativity — so also he became perfect in human and divine wisdom from the very moment of conception, as man, that is to say;
1:589
for as God he did not become perfect in divine wisdom, but was so eternally; but according to the advance of the body's stature, the manifestation of the perfect human wisdom in him was reckoned as advance.
1:590
他若有人性的智慧,那麼他必然也有〔人性的〕心思(理智);
And if he had human wisdom, then certainly also a human mind;
1:591
And the Apostle also says:
1:592
'But we have the mind of Christ.' And the holy Fathers, moreover, understand 'according to the image' in terms of the intellectual faculty, whose testimonies we have appended below.
1:593
If, then, he assumed the man made according to his image, that is, the nature of humanity, then certainly he assumed an intellectual and rational nature.
1:594
And he also assumed a self-determined willing.
1:595
正如他承受了那順服於理性的無理性欲望,照樣他也承受了那理性的欲望;
For just as he assumed the irrational appetite that is obedient to reason, so also he assumed the rational appetite;
1:596
for he did not assume a mindless and irrational nature.
1:597
For if he had assumed a mindless and irrational nature, he would have assumed not a man, but an irrational being.
1:598
For man is an intellectual and rational nature.
1:599
既然如此,所有聖教父,正如他們論我們主耶穌基督時說有兩個本性,照樣他們也說一切本性所有的特性都是雙重的;
Therefore all the holy Fathers, just as they spoke of two natures in our Lord Jesus Christ, so also spoke of all the natural properties as twofold;
1:600
for it is impossible for a nature to subsist apart from its constitutive properties.
1:601
所以,凡說他有兩個本性的,就必然也要說他有兩個本性所有的意志,也就是兩種意欲的能力;
Of necessity, therefore, those who say that he has two natures must also say that his natural wills are two, that is, the faculties of willing;
1:602
for as God by nature he had a divine, almighty willing, and as having become man by nature he had the human willing, according to which he willed, having entered into a house, to go unnoticed, and was not able.
1:603
For surely, I think, they will not ascribe the impossibility to the divine willing.
1:604
所以,他確實具有他人性靈魂中意欲的能力,並且照著這能力意願人性的事,也照著他靈魂的意願而被推動去行人性的事;正如同一位、也是同一位神的兒子基督,既是完全的神,又是完全的人,也照著神聖的意願意願神聖的事一樣——但這兩者之間並無意念抉擇上的對立;
He had, then, the volitional power of his human soul, and according to this he willed human things, and according to his soul's willing he was moved toward human things — just as, by the divine willing, he willed divine things, the one and the same Son of God, Christ, perfect God and perfect man — but not with any opposition of gnomic disposition;
1:605
for his human willing was subjected, of its own free choice, to his divine and paternal will, and it willed those things which his divine willing willed it to will.
1:606
For since the willing of Adam was not subjected to the divine will, but his gnomic disposition willed things contrary to the divine will — and this was the transgression, and none of those descended from Adam has become obedient to the divine will in all things, but each hypostasis, according to its own gnomic disposition, has become disobedient to the divine will —
1:607
(for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, according to the Apostle) — for this reason the Son of God, having become man by the Father's good pleasure, assumed a human nature and a natural human willing, but did not assume a human hypostasis, so that the natural willing of humanity might not act, according to its own hypostatic and gnomic will, contrary to the divine will, but might, of its own free choice, become obedient in all things, and thus the ancient transgression be undone.
1:608
He had, then, a human willing, according to Mark the Evangelist, in that having entered into a house he willed to go unnoticed, and was not able.
1:609
The divine willing, then, is almighty and not powerless, but the human willing is powerless.
1:610
By human willing, then, he willed, his divine willing having consented and given opportunity to his human nature to make use of its own properties — to will, I mean, and not to be able.
1:611
'Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me' — that is, the cup of death.
1:612
Behold the natural appetite and desire for life, which rational and irrational living beings alike naturally possess.
1:613
'Nevertheless, not my will be done, but yours.' Behold the natural and rational appetite of the mind, self-determining and judging and restraining the irrational appetite.
1:614
「不要成就我的意志,只要成就你的。」「我的」,指人性的,就這一點而言,你與我並非同分者(共有者);
'Not my will be done, but yours.' 'Mine' means the human, in respect of which I am not your fellow-partaker;
1:615
for you did not become man as I did, that is, my counterpart, nor did you take on human passions.
1:616
But 'yours' means that which is common to both me and you, of which I am a fellow-partaker, as also of the nature of the Godhead.
1:617
'For I have come down from heaven not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me' — not that by my own
1:618
gnomic disposition, contrary to your will, my human willing should act, but that it should become obedient to your will, and that the object willed by your willing should also become the object willed by my human willing.
1:619
For it was the will and good pleasure of the Father that he should suffer for the salvation of the world, for which very reason he became incarnate.
1:620
因為在此,「意志」所指的,不是那意願本身,而是那被意願之事(意願的對象);
For here 'will' signifies not the willing itself, but the thing willed;
1:621
for it is not proposed to him to enact the divine willing itself — for this is uncreated and without beginning — but rather the thing willed, which the divine willing wills; just as also 'all his wills' is to be understood as referring to these very things.
1:622
For there are not many volitional faculties of God, but one; nor is the volitional faculty of God in the saints — since then the nature too would be one (for those whose willing is one, of these the nature is also one) — but rather the wills of God are in the saints, that is, his commandments.
1:623
由此可見,基督既有兩個本性,照樣他也有兩個本性所有的意願,以及兩個本性所有的運作,好叫他既是完全的神,又是完全的人;
It has been shown, then, that just as Christ had two natures, so also he had two natural willings and two natural operations, so that he might be perfect God and perfect man;
1:624
for one who does not have all the properties of the Godhead, and before these the divine nature, is not perfect God; nor is one who does not have the perfect nature of man and all the natural properties of humanity, a perfect man.
1:625
所以他有神聖的意願,照著這意願,他作為神,與父和聖靈一同意願神聖的事;
He had, then, the divine willing, according to which, as God, he willed divine things together with the Father and the Spirit;
1:626
for as their nature is one, so also the willing according to it is one.
1:627
他也有本性所有的人性意願,也就是本性所有的意欲能力,因為他成了完全的人,正如他的母親一樣;
And he also had a natural human willing, that is, a natural volitional faculty, inasmuch as he became a perfect man, as did his mother;
1:628
for as their nature is one, so also their willing is one.
1:629
他也有神聖的運作,照著這運作,他自主自決地意願,並與父和聖靈一同運行神聖的事;
He also had the divine operation, according to which, willing of his own free choice, he operated divine things together with the Father and the Spirit;
1:630
he also had a human operation, according to which, willing of his own free choice, he operated human things.
1:631
For it was not by divine willing that he willed to escape notice, and yet could not; nor did he will to eat and drink by divine willing—for these are things willed by human nature, and not by the divine—; nor did he walk or stretch out his hands by divine operation.
1:632
For to walk and to stretch out one's hands does not belong to the divine nature or to the divine operation.
1:633
Yet each of the two natures in Christ, in communion with the other, willed and operated that which was proper to it, his human willing and operation being made subservient to his divine willing and operation.
1:634
For just as through his bodily operation his divine operation was at work—for he took hold with his hand of the girl's hand and said, "Little girl, arise," and through the touch and the word the divine operation gave life to the maiden—so also through his human willing his divine willing was at work.
1:635
For having willed divinely, he wrought the miracle; and having willed humanly, he stretched out his hand and said:
1:636
Whatever he willed and worked humanly became the salvation of the world.
1:637
For he did not perform the divine things merely as God—for he did not work the miracles through the touch and stretching-out of hands as bare God—nor did he do the human things merely as man—for the sufferings that brought salvation to the world were not those of a mere man—but, being God and having become man, he displayed a certain new and strange theandric operation: divine, yet operating through the human; human, yet made subservient to the divine, and manifesting the tokens of the divinity conjoined with it.
1:638
For just as iron is of one nature and fire of another, so each of these has an operation different from the other's.
1:639
For fire does not cut, but burns and gives light; and iron, according to its own natural operation, neither burns nor gives light, but cuts and is black.
1:640
But when a union of the two takes place, each performs its own operation in union and not in division—for at the same instant as the cutting the burning also occurs, and through the iron the fire burns and gives light—yet it is not one natural operation but two: one, the natural operation of the fire, which is the burning; the other, the natural operation of the iron, which is the cutting; and each has its own proper result: that of the fire, the burning; that of the iron, the cutting—even though the cutting is a burning cutting, and the burning is a cutting burning.
1:641
And in the case of our Lord Jesus Christ, each nature operates its own properties in communion with the other, and the two are not one, nor is there one result of the two; but it belongs to his human nature freely to obey and to be subservient to the divine will, and by its own will to stretch out the hand and touch the girl in obedience to, and in service of, the divine will, while it is the divinity that, through the touch, effects the raising of the girl.
1:642
So that the terminus of the human operation is the willing stretching-out and touch of the hand, while that of the divine is the raising of the girl.
1:643
Whence the great Dionysius did not speak of one theandric operation, but simply of a new, or strange, operation.
1:644
For each of them was strange and theandric.
1:645
For in saying this he was not indicating a number, but the strange manner.
1:646
For indeed the Lord, having pity on his own creature, which had willingly received the affliction of sin as a sowing by the enemy, assumed the whole of what was diseased, that he might heal the whole.
1:647
For that which is not assumed is unhealed. But that which was assumed, this is also saved.
1:648
But what is it that stumbled and first suffered, if not the mind and its rational appetite, that is, the willing? This, then, was in need of healing.
1:649
For sin is a disease of the will.
1:650
If he had not assumed a rational and intellective soul, and its willing, he would not have healed the affliction of human nature.
1:651
For this reason he also assumed a willing.
1:652
But he did not assume sin.
1:653
For sin is not his work.
1:654
In order, then, that he might banish from the soul the disease of sin sown by the enemy, for this reason he assumed a soul and its willing, but did not commit sin; and in order that he might free the body from corruption and the servitude of sin, he also assumed a body.
1:655
He also took upon himself the penalties incurred by the first transgression, that, by paying on our behalf the debt that lay against us, he might free us from condemnation.
1:656
For a slave cannot set a slave free.
1:657
For this reason he himself, being sinless and therefore free, and subject neither to death nor to any other penalty, took upon himself our penalties on our behalf and died for us, that he might give power to those who receive him to become children of God, and grant them incorruptibility, and in the regeneration, in the age to come, bestow upon them a life equal to the angels', free from grief and free from toil.
1:658
For it is necessary first to endure the things of the first Adam, from whom we have also received our origin, and thus to obtain the gifts of the second Adam.
1:659
If we follow in his footsteps and keep the law of freedom and do not again become enslaved to the yoke of sin—for having freed our nature, he again gave us a commandment and showed us a way, walking in which we shall reign together with him, going where he himself, as our forerunner, has gone; but if we travel another way, we shall remain outside—may it be granted us, following in his footsteps, always to be with him and to enjoy his glory and kingdom, now and always and unto the ages of ages.
