1:952
A deep darkness of ignorance is poured about the children of the Greeks, and, spread like a mist over the minds of all, it does not allow them to look up toward the door of what is truly beneficial, but rather, by untested and deceptive reasonings, banishes them from the household of true doctrines.
1:953
For what indeed do these madmen do? They deprive man of what is most excellent, and, stripping him of the great prerogative of his nature, they obliterate it.
1:954
因為他們既不承認、也不願意人能掌握自己的自由抉擇;
For they neither say nor wish that man is in possession of his own free choice;
1:955
nor that he exercises free choice in the things he does, but rather that the impulse behind each of his actions does not lie in his own will, but has been allotted by the decree of others.
1:956
因為他們說,某種命運與星宿定命,全憑其自身的心意,來衡量每個人的一生;
For a certain Fate and horoscope of birth, as they say, weighs out the life of each person according to its own pleasure;
1:957
它把最美好的事物分配給某些人,正是人們理當祈求得以擁有的那些福分;
and to some it assigns the fairest things, those with which one might justly pray to be blessed;
1:958
但對另一些人,它卻反過來加諸那些沒有人願意經歷的事;
but to others, again, it extends things which no one would choose to have come to pass;
1:959
以致人根本無法憑自己的意願行事,既無權掌管美善之事,也無權掌管與此相反之事;
so that man walks of his own accord in nothing, having authority neither over good things nor, indeed, over their opposite;
1:960
but is drawn, as it were by cords—by ropes of necessity, so to speak—toward both alike;
1:961
so that he who from above has been allotted dominion over all things no longer differs in any way from irrational animals.
1:962
And it seems to me that those who subscribe to such opinions do something quite similar—as if, having set up a charioteer and mounted him upon the chariot, they should then entrust the actual driving of the horses to someone else.
1:963
But such a man will neither carry off the glory of victory, nor, if he falls and is dashed to pieces, will he be believed to have been the cause of his own disaster.
1:964
For both belong to the deeds of others—of those who hold the reins—not to the one who stands vainly upon the chariot-box, whose mounting there serves no purpose.
1:965
For of things over which a person has no control, how could he reasonably be called to account? But that which lies within the free choice of the agent—to whatever result it may come, or however it may be done—will clearly not ascribe its causes to others.
1:966
To deny that he walks by his own judgment toward whatever he wills brings the charge of the utmost folly upon those who hold it. I shall now call to mind a few examples, as I have already said I would.
1:967
Their own accounts make mention of a certain Tantalus, and Tityus, and Ixion, and the misery of Sisyphus, and they insist that these men are paying penalties—and quite justly so—penalties which, presumably, they themselves had willed upon themselves.
1:968
For they say that Tantalus is punished by a most exceedingly heavy stone suspended over his head, and by the constant fear of dangers ever expected.
1:969
Then, should anyone ask the cause of this evil, he will hear men crying out that Tantalus had an unbridled tongue, branding his affliction with the name of a most shameful malady.
1:970
至於那被稱為提提俄斯的人,他們說他被伸展開來,橫跨了整整九普勒特隆(古希臘長度單位)之地;
As for the one called Tityus, they stretch him out over nine whole plethra of ground;
1:971
and they say that his liver is being torn apart by a pair of vultures let loose upon him, and they insist that a certain form of licentiousness became for him the occasion of this incurable calamity.
1:972
至於伊克西翁和西西弗斯:前者被縛於一個永不停歇旋轉的輪子之下,隨其循環轉動;
As for Ixion and Sisyphus: the one is bound beneath the ever-turning revolutions and circular motions of a wheel;
1:973
and they say that the other is punished with unending toil and sweat.
1:974
and then, in order that these two might appear to be justly punished, they subject them to various indictments of wrongdoing.
1:975
But if, indeed, according to their own understanding and notion, we are to suppose that man is subject to the compulsions of Fate, then, as it seems to me, the offenses for which those just named have suffered would not be their own, but rather those of the Fate that summoned them to such deeds, and which, being able to overpower each person's judgment, has brought that judgment under its own control.
1:976
因此,就讓那些人從無可挽回的懲罰與永無止盡的苦難中被釋放吧,反倒該被控告的是那橫加宰制的命運,讓它被交付給行刑者——若真有人決意要如此行的話;
Therefore, let those men be released from their irremediable punishments and undying misery, and let the overpowering Fate instead be accused, and let it be handed over to its punishers, if there are any who have resolved to do so;
1:977
Or, if anyone will indeed say that those men are justly punished, let him present to us man stripped bare of necessity, and let him remove the tyranny that comes from Fate, so that the charges against Tantalus and Sisyphus may appear to be truly their own.
1:978
For if even among us the ordinance of justice recognizes it as one of the most absurd things not to exact penalties rather from the guilty themselves, but from others in their place, how will it not be plain to everyone that, of all the gods believed in by them, none could reasonably be judged more wretched—seeing that the distributors and stewards of all things, though entrusted with the power to judge, do not exercise it rightly?
1:979
反觀我們當中的人,豈不是更為優越嗎?他們在每件事上都作出公正的判決,並且斷定義人理當受到應有的尊榮;
And how are our own judges not better, who render an upright judgment in every case, having determined that the just man ought to be honored as is fitting;
1:980
while, as for those who have been shown guilty of shameful deeds, judging that they ought to be held in hatred...
1:981
and rebuking, in proportion, those who are convicted of having transgressed the law? But this, indeed, my good fellow, is what your poets and men of learning think concerning these matters.
1:982
But hear also something of what our wise men say.
1:983
'The folly of a man ruins his way, yet his heart blames God.' So then, if anyone were free from folly, he would not have had his way ruined, nor would he at all have blamed the divine nature, as though it were calling him to the very thing which it has also forbidden by law.
1:984
有些人立自己的理智為導師和教師,彷彿為自己立了一位最好的審判官,總是急切地在凡被判定為至善之事上力求出類拔萃;
For some, having set up their own mind as guide and teacher, and as it were the best judge for themselves, are always eager to excel in whatever things are judged to be most excellent;
1:985
but whatever things banish them from the best counsel and conduct, these they avoid with great earnestness.
1:986
所以,並非命運與星宿依照它們自己看為好的判給各人,就使人成為卑劣行為的實行者,或成為美善之事的愛慕者;
Therefore it is not fate and the horoscope, awarding to each according to what seems good to them, that make a man either a doer of base deeds or a lover of good deeds;
1:987
而是眾人都出於自願,走向這兩者中的任何一條路;
but all walk voluntarily toward both alternatives;
1:988
and whichever way seems good to each, there is nothing that necessarily prevents him from directing his own affairs accordingly.
1:989
But if it is necessary to add something further to what has been said, and to point out the author of the Greeks' lack of instruction, and whence it happened that they fell into this folly, I will say it, and very readily.
1:990
And having taken man in hand as one of his spoils of war, and having through deceit set himself up as a tyrant over us, he feared the return of that free nature to what it originally was —
1:991
——這人,因良心的責備,總是急切地想逃回更好的狀態;
man, who by the reproaches of conscience is always hastening to flee back to what is better;
1:992
who hates sin as something foreign and imported, and is always downcast in transgressing, even if he should somehow be stolen away toward it by some small pleasure.
1:993
But lest, by exercising his own self-rule, he should, by the force drawing him toward freedom, do away with the pleasure that had tyrannized him,
1:994
and having bidden his sins a long farewell, should rise again to the advantages he had from the beginning, and, dwelling in the works of righteousness, should already be found unconquerable by the help from above —
1:995
he devised another manner of deceit: always making this a weapon of his own wickedness, and as it were stealing away the greater part of the grief over sins, always fighting by guile against the reproaches of conscience, he says, 'You yourselves are not the cause of your inability to do what is better;
1:996
nor has God placed self-control within your own power.
1:997
He has driven a necessary yoke upon you:
1:998
fate and the horoscope rule, and it is necessary to do what seems good to them.'
1:999
那惡者就用這樣的詭計制伏人,使人如迷失的畜群般離開真理的教義,於是使人更容易陷入各樣的罪;
By such deceits the evil one subdues man, and having driven him like straying cattle away from the doctrines of truth, renders him more readily disposed toward every sin;
1:1000
for attributing the outcome of his own affairs to fate, and saying that he is subject to the inescapable bonds of the horoscope, he would suppose that he will undergo no punishment for whatever he may appear to have transgressed.
1:1001
But in these matters, they, having cast aside sound-mindedness...
1:1002
But let the heralds of the Church speak, who have put on Christ and who bear the mind of truth.
1:1003
For we are not ignorant of his devices.
1:1004
But lest those who are guilty of the deceits just described, and who set their own understanding against the will of the Lawgiver, should for so long suffer thus from this folly and wage war against him whom they least of all ought, let them hear what we said from the beginning:
1:1005
讓我們與祂和好,讓我們止息這仇恨;
Let us make peace with him; let us do away with the enmity;
1:1006
let strife and war depart; let us give our right hands to the Savior.
1:1007
讓我們藉著信心祈求平安;
Let us ask for peace through faith;
1:1008
let us also say, together with the prophet:
1:1009
'O Lord our God, give us peace.'
1:1010
'O Lord, possess us; besides you we know no other; we call upon your name.'
1:1011
To the children of the Greeks, then, and to those who have but recently entered the gates of the Church, these words too will suffice for their benefit.
1:1012
But since another people also presents itself to me — one armed with the weapons of ignorance as a most ill-counseled soldier, setting its judgment against the Savior by means of shadow and type and letter, and having, as it is written, the outward form of knowledge in the law — it supposes that it must war against the truth of the realities;
1:1013
come, then, let us also cry out to them, on account of our mutual love:
1:1014
『讓我們與祂和好。』猶太人哪,你沉溺於文字的表象,抵擋真理的大能,究竟要到幾時呢?你的無知何時才能見到盡頭?你幾時才能使心思脫離律法中的影兒?又要經過多久的時間,才能向我們顯出你更為明智?你幾時才肯把在靈裡的敬拜獻給那萬有之王——神?「神是個靈」,正如經上所記,「凡敬拜祂的,必須用心靈和誠實敬拜祂。」但你卻捨棄了在靈裡的敬拜,反倒使趨向更差之事比趨向更善之事更令你喜悅,並以文字的粗淺自誇;
'Let us make peace with him.' How long, O Jew, fused as you are into the types of the letter, will you drive past the power of the truth? When will the end of your ignorance be seen? When will you remove your mind from the shadow that is in the law? Or what length of time will show you to us as more sober-minded? And when will you offer the worship in spirit to God, the King of all things? 'God is spirit,' as it is written, 'and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.' But you, having abandoned worship in spirit, and having made the inclination toward what is worse sweeter than that toward what is better, take pride in the grossness of the letter;
1:1015
then you suppose that through this you honor God, and, shaking off the most precise understanding of the law, as though you possessed the full knowledge of what is written, you do not perceive that you are talking nonsense.
1:1016
Come then, let us discuss briefly with you, point by point, each of the things honored among you.
1:1017
For you will understand, I think, quite easily from this, if indeed you have it in you to wish to be sober-minded, that you have spent long ages in error.
1:1018
因為你將肉身的割禮視為一件大事,並看作敬拜中最切要之事;
For you accept, as a great matter, and as the most essential thing for worship, circumcision in the flesh;
1:1019
你也極其推崇安息日的歇息,並且樂於宰殺羊隻為祭;
you greatly admire the rest on the Sabbath, and you gladly slaughter sheep;
1:1020
並且你以為,當你在神面前顯出獻牛為祭時,神就因你大大歡喜;至於食物及其中的分別,你也有著繁多而精細的講究,並以此為誇耀;
and you think that God rejoices greatly over you when you appear before him sacrificing oxen; and concerning foods and the distinctions among them, you have much and precise reasoning, taking your boast in these things;
1:1021
這些操練,在你看來,正是至高美德所生的陣痛;
these are, for you, the birth-pangs of the loftiest virtue's exercises;
1:1022
in these you have set for yourself the boundaries of what is approved.
1:1023
然而我要說,立法者的智慧與聰明,實在超乎一切言語與驚歎之上;
But I declare that the wisdom and understanding of the Lawgiver is greater than all speech and all wonder;
1:1024
yet I would justly, and very reasonably, censure the follies of the Jews.
1:1025
因為他們並不樂於領悟;
For they do not understand readily;
1:1026
and they flee from learning, erring in another respect, being led by their own ignorance alone to the enjoyment of none of the good things.
1:1027
But let them also hear, through the prophetic voice:
1:1028
'Awake, you drunkards, from your wine!' Come then, let us examine what indeed is the benefit of being circumcised,
1:1029
or what benefit the Lawgiver would thereby introduce for us.
1:1030
若割禮施行於身體中那服事生育之天性的部位,卻沒有蘊含某種至美的道理,這便不免顯得荒謬;
For that circumcision should be applied to the parts of the body by which nature is served toward procreation, if it did not carry within itself some most excellent rationale, would not lack ridiculousness;
1:1031
rather, it would be indicting the skill of the Creator, as though the form of the body were burdened with certain random excesses.
1:1032
那麼,倘若前面所說的道理確實如此,並且照我們的理解成立,難道我們不是在判定神聖的心思在合宜之事上有所失誤嗎?因為,若唯有藉著割禮,身體的本性才更能保全其應有的合宜,那麼在起初,這豈不理當就是更好、更佳的安排嗎?那麼,請告訴我,若有人說那從不出錯、毫無玷污的本性,竟在合宜之事上帶著缺失被造成,這豈不在眾人眼中都顯為胡言嗎?因為那位在萬有之上的神,曾創造了眾多種類的無理性活物;
Then how, if the force of what has been said stands and is understood by us in this way, shall we not judge the divine mind to have erred from what is fitting? For if, by being circumcised, what is more fitting is better preserved for the nature of the body, how was this not altogether better and preferable from the beginning? Who then, tell me, in saying that the unerring and undefiled nature came into being with a fault against what is fitting, will not appear to everyone to be talking nonsense? For the God over all created many kinds of irrational animals;
1:1033
but nothing appears to be present in their formation, either lacking or superfluous, with regard to the most exact beauty.
1:1034
It is entirely free from censure on both counts, and has escaped accusation in either respect.
1:1035
這樣一位巧奪天工的神——祂連在較次等的受造物身上都施展如此周全的眷顧——怎麼可能在萬有中最尊貴之事上有所失誤呢?難道祂使那按自己形像所造的人置身於無理性活物之中時,竟安排他顯得更為醜陋不堪,倘若那些活物身上毫無瑕疵,唯獨這人身上卻出了差錯嗎?但我想,就連猶太人自己也會承認:若肉身的割禮並未表明任何美善之事,那麼,那些有救主居住其中、且有聖靈內住的人,竟只不過勝過那些活物的無知而已,這實在是可笑的事;
How could God, so consummate a craftsman, who exercised such great providence even in the lesser creatures, have erred concerning the most precious of all things? And in bringing the one made according to his image into the midst of the irrational creatures, did he arrange for him to appear more disgraceful, if in the case of those animals nothing at all, but in this one's case something, has gone amiss? But I think that the Jews themselves would agree that, if nothing good were signified through circumcision according to the flesh, it would be laughable that those in whom the Savior lodges, and in whom the Holy Spirit dwells, should appear only superior to the ignorance of those creatures;
1:1036
來吧,讓我們再次以合宜的道理來配合立法者的規條,藉此顯明其中所蘊含的意義是何等值得重視;
Come then, let us again, by applying the fitting reasoning to the ordinances of the Lawgiver, demonstrate that the meaning contained in them is most worthy of notice;
1:1037
那麼,是時候該盡可能清楚地揭示並闡明:肉身的割禮所暗示、要向我們揭明的究竟是什麼道理;
then it is time, at last, to uncover and set forth as clearly as possible what principle circumcision in the flesh is meant to disclose to us;
1:1038
and how one might best suppose the reasoning concerning it to have been examined.
1:1039
因此,在我們裡面的理智,本性上是萬物中最富生機、最能孕育的;它自身蘊藏著一切美德的種子,並且如同從土地中一般,總是藉著自身內在的活動,源源不絕地供應對各樣至善之事的渴慕;
The mind, then, that is in us is by nature the most fertile of all things, having within itself the seeds of every virtue, and being ever supplied, as though from the earth, out of its own inner movements, with desires for each of the most excellent things;
1:1040
for it has been made thus by the Creator.
1:1041
然而,卻有一層彷彿覆蓋物一般的東西籠罩著它——那從彷彿與生俱來的根所滋生蔓延的『遺忘』,而這遺忘正是一切污穢的溫床;
But there runs over it, like a covering, a forgetfulness that creeps forth as though from an inborn root, which is also the nurse of every uncleanness;
1:1042
這遺忘如同雲霧一般,或是籠罩著人對美善之事的渴慕,或是將它侵蝕殆盡;
and the desire for what is better, like a mist, it either spreads over or grazes away;
1:1043
and, overshadowing the memory of the duty to do what is best, it works in us an earthly disposition in place of the spiritual one, and thus shows man to be full of every uncleanness.
1:1044
And indeed, to those to whom this happened, it is said through the prophetic voice:
1:1045
「你們遠離主的人哪,當記念,願耶路撒冷湧上你們的心。」因為必須如此,必須如同用水澆滅火一般,用對美善之事的記念,來澆滅那因遺忘而生的種種禍患;
'Remember, you who are far from the Lord, and let Jerusalem come up upon your heart.' For it was necessary, it was necessary, that the remembrance of good things be poured out, like water upon fire, upon the evils that come from forgetfulness;
1:1046
and that henceforth they be blotted out through the opposite remedies.
1:1047
...are we accounted before God? But repelling the forgetfulness of what is better, and cutting off, as it were, the resulting faults like some outflow of superfluous waste, we shall preserve within ourselves the mind that is virile and most fecund, free from all baseness and stripped of the evils that come from wickedness.
1:1048
如此一來,我們既已使那源自罪惡的舊態離開自己的靈魂,並轉化為那源自無邪的嬰孩純真,我們就能坦然無懼地站在神面前;
Thus, then, having banished from our own soul the oldness that comes from sin, and being transformed into the infancy that comes from innocence, we shall present ourselves with boldness before God;
1:1049
但我們決不是完全靠自己來到神面前,正如剛出生的嬰孩也不是自己把自己帶到神面前一樣;
yet we shall by no means present ourselves entirely on our own, just as indeed a newborn infant did not bring itself to God;
1:1050
but Christ, who has regenerated us through faith, will present us, offering himself as a sacrifice on our behalf to the Father.
1:1051
And he shall offer it on the eighth day, that is, after the sabbath-rest prescribed by the law.
1:1052
因為這正是我們救主降臨的時候;
For this is the time of the coming of our Savior;
1:1053
since Christ is also the end of the law and the prophets,
1:1054
bringing in for us the beginning of the Lord's times, in which all things have become new.
1:1055
Just as, indeed, Paul also says:
1:1056
'So that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things have passed away — behold, all things have become new.' We must suppose that circumcision according to the flesh brings in for us this type of the contemplated realities: performed, as I said, on the eighth day, and bringing the newborn into the sight of God.
1:1057
Let the most wise Paul, the steward of the Savior's mysteries, also bear witness to what has been said, coming forward and crying out:
1:1058
'For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly;'
1:1059
'nor is circumcision that which is outward, in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, by the Spirit, not the letter — whose praise is not from men, but from God.' And again let him write to others concerning the same things, saying thus:
1:1060
'Beware of the dogs, beware of the evil workers, beware of the mutilation.'
1:1061
'For we are the circumcision, who worship God in the Spirit and glory in Christ Jesus, and put no confidence in the flesh.' For the boast of circumcision according to the flesh, if it be understood alone, lacking the beauty that comes from contemplation, would, I think, never be found of any worth among those of sound mind.
1:1062
然而,當肉身割禮引入靈裡割禮的預表,並顯出它暗示心中的潔淨時,這時,人或許會稱讚它極好地描繪了那存在於精微默想中的真理;
But when it introduces the type of circumcision in the spirit, and appears to signify the cleansing of the heart, then indeed one will perhaps praise it as most excellently shaping that which lies in subtle contemplation;
1:1063
but he will clearly be released from having to undergo it, once he has practiced the purification that is in the heart.
1:1064
And it is this very thing that the prophetic word urged the Jews to hasten to do, saying thus:
1:1065
'Break up your fallow ground, and do not sow among thorns.'
1:1066
「你們當為神受割禮,割去你們心中的剛硬,猶大人哪,住在耶路撒冷的人哪」——這樣,若有人只在肉身上受割禮,他絕不能因此就算是為神行了這事;
'Be circumcised to God, and circumcise the hardness of your heart, you men of Judah who dwell in Jerusalem' — so that, if anyone is circumcised in the flesh, he will by no means thereby have done this unto God;
1:1067
and that the power of true circumcision is fulfilled, not in the bodily experience according to the flesh, but in willing to do what God commands, hear Paul saying most clearly:
1:1068
'...uncircumcision is nothing.' But lest he seem to us to be putting forward mere bare words, saying that what has been honored through the law is nothing, he explains more clearly, and says:
1:1069
'For circumcision indeed profits, if you keep the law;'
1:1070
'but if you are a transgressor of the law, your circumcision has become uncircumcision.'
1:1071
'If, then, the uncircumcision keeps the requirements of the law, will not his uncircumcision be reckoned as circumcision? And the uncircumcision which by nature fulfills the law will judge you, who through the letter and circumcision are a transgressor of the law.' Since, then, he says that circumcision is seen to be of no benefit to those who have undergone it, whenever it does not bring them to be well-approved through their deeds
1:1072
as a boast, I would gladly inquire of the most senseless among the Jews:
1:1073
But if it is necessary to add something to what has been said, Paul also firmly affirms that circumcision was given as yet another sign,
1:1074
彷彿是給那家族始祖亞伯拉罕、印證他在未受割禮時所存信心的一個印記;
and, as it were, a seal of the faith held in uncircumcision, given to Abraham, the forefather of the race;
1:1075
that he might be the father of many nations — not only, he says, of those of the circumcision, but also of those who walk in the footsteps of the faith which our father Abraham had in uncircumcision.
1:1076
因為他信了神,就被稱義,那時他尚未受割禮;
For he believed God, and was justified, not yet having received circumcision;
1:1077
but after the faith, and the justification that came from it, circumcision became for him the sign of the matter.
1:1078
For indeed it is worth seeing what the lawgiver himself says concerning this.
1:1079
He commands abstaining from works, and being released from bodily labors, on the Sabbath.
1:1080
He does not wish anyone to go out from Jerusalem, nor to journey far along the roads.
1:1081
And he requires that they use not the food prepared on the spot that day, but that which had already been made ready beforehand.
1:1082
And he entirely forbids carrying loads, and altogether prevents being burdened down, saying most plainly through the voice of Jeremiah:
1:1083
'And you shall not go out through the gate of Jerusalem on the day of the Sabbaths;'
1:1084
'and you shall not carry burdens out of your houses.' In these things the law defines for you the honors due to the Sabbath.
1:1085
But let him come forward again into our midst who has trained himself to plead only for the letter, and let one of those of the Jewish persuasion tell us whether some wise reasoning has been fitted to the things ordained by God, or whether the power of the divine mysteries lies for us in bare words alone and in the naked letter.
1:1086
所以,如果他明智地承認:由文字而生的粗淺,只是像一層遮蓋加在真理的默想之上,那麼他就應當尋求其中的意義,不可流連於以象徵所說的言語,以免自己失去那最美好的東西;
If, then, he confesses — acting most sensibly — that the grossness arising from the letter is smeared over the contemplated truths as a kind of veil, let him seek out the meaning, and not, by lingering over what is spoken in figure, deprive himself of the finest things;
1:1087
but if he insists that it is proper to attend to the letter alone and to reckon nothing further beyond it, and both practices this himself with zeal and moreover contends to teach it to others, he will hear, according to the voice of the Savior:
1:1088
'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites, because you have taken away the key of knowledge:'
1:1089
'you yourselves do not enter, nor do you allow those who are entering to go in.' Come, then, let us also examine, concerning the matter of the Sabbath, what its nature really is, and, scrutinizing more minutely the force of the reasoning, let us see whether the mind of the Jews is not again found here too, full of folly.
1:1090
請告訴我,究竟是什麼緣故,使那萬物的創造者,除了他認為妥當的其他一切規定之外,還立法規定要在安息日休息呢?畢竟其餘一切受造之物,仍照其自然的運行毫無阻礙地在安息日運作;一切存在之物所被指定要做的事,並不因安息日而停止。太陽依然升起,並不停止運行其慣常的軌道;
For tell me, what was it that persuaded the Creator of all things, besides all the other things which he judged fitting to have, also to legislate rest on the Sabbath — although the rest of all creation acts by its natural movements unhindered on the Sabbath, and each of the things that exist does not cease from doing what it has been appointed to do, because of the Sabbath? For the sun rises, and does not cease unwinding its accustomed course;
1:1091
大地繁茂於各樣植物,因種種萌芽而顯得美麗,並不因安息日而變得貧瘠,也未曾對從它而生之物撤回其滋養的能力;
and the earth, luxuriant with various plants and adorned with manifold shoots, is not made barren because of the Sabbath, nor has it belied its nourishing power toward the things that spring from it;
1:1092
and likewise the springs, the mothers of cool waters — have they ever checked the flow from their own breasts, and ceased to bring forth their accustomed supply?
1:1093
但若如你所想,安息日之所以受尊崇僅在於休息本身,這樣的律法對我們並無其他益處,那麼他為何不將同一律法平等地施行於萬物之上呢?請告訴我,若有人在安息日為自己做飯,或磨麥,這有什麼妨害呢?又或者,臨時準備其他身體所需的食物,有什麼可禁止的呢?然而如今,律法卻彷彿把這視為一件重大且極受重視的事介紹給我們,完全禁止一切工作;
But if, as you suppose, it was according to his purpose merely that the Sabbath be honored by rest, with no other benefit accruing to us through such legislation, why did he not lay down the same law for all things alike? Tell me, what is the harm if someone cooks for himself, as we do, or grinds grain on the Sabbath? Or what is it that forbids the improvising of other food for the body? But as it is, the law, introducing this to us as though it were something great and highly esteemed, restrains us from all work;
1:1094
也不許人從家中搬出重擔;
and it does not allow one to carry out a burden from the hearth;
1:1095
也不許人跨過耶路撒冷城門的門檻走到遠處;並且吩咐人只可用預先籌備、而非臨時取得的食物赴宴就席;違犯此律者,要以死刑論處;
nor even to go anywhere far, crossing the threshold of the gate in Jerusalem; and it commands that, using food not procured on the spot but prepared beforehand through forethought, one go to feasting and table — and it punishes with death the one who transgresses;
1:1096
然而,這些所頒布的規定,若在其他時候去做,卻絕不會使那行之人蒙受罪的控告;
and yet none of the things thus prescribed, if done at some other time, would bring the charge of sin upon the one who did it;
1:1097
也絕不會有明理之人說,這些事在律法中也如同其他過犯一樣,被列在過犯之列;
and no one of sound mind would say that these things too are reckoned by the law among the offenses, just as the other things are;
1:1098
those other things, from which it plainly declares that one ought entirely to keep away.
1:1099
For 'You shall not murder,' 'You shall not commit adultery,' 'You shall not steal,' 'You shall not bear false witness,' and whatever else is joined with these, looking to one and the same purport — these are not to be guarded against only on the Sabbath by a man who hates being punished, but are to be avoided at every time.
1:1100
由此,我想聽者當能極其清楚地明白:安息日所禁止的事並非罪過,反倒為我們產生出一幅極其優美的實事之圖像;
Whence, indeed, I suppose it will become quite clearly evident to those who listen, that the things forbidden on the Sabbath are not sins, but rather bring forth for us a most graceful image of realities;
1:1101
and this I shall not shrink from setting forth, as best I am able, for your benefit.
1:1102
The discussion of rest shall be set before the others, introducing a twofold consideration.
1:1103
因為以色列人自從離開本土,遷居於埃及人的地方,並在那裡延續了漫長的歲月,按理他們大概連自己是希伯來人、出自亞伯拉罕之根這一事實,恐怕都僅僅殘存於記憶之中而已;
For since those of Israel, having departed from their native land, settled in the land of the Egyptians, prolonging a long time there, it is likely that they no longer preserved, even in bare memory alone, the fact that they were Hebrews by race and had sprung from the root of Abraham;
1:1104
and having forgotten their ancestral customs, and having renounced the piety of their forefathers, they turned to the false worship of the local inhabitants.
1:1105
他們彷彿認為,若不與那些接納這遷徙而來之民族進入其地的人同陷於同樣的謬誤,便是對他們大大不義,於是便以為理當敬拜太陽;
And supposing, as it were, that they would be doing no small wrong to those who had received the migrant people into their land, if they did not also share in the same error as they did, they thought it necessary to worship the sun;
1:1106
又敬拜天和地、月亮和星辰——事實上,還有哪一種元素是他們不曾以為應當獻上本應歸於神之榮耀的呢?因為無知的黑暗在他們身上是何等深重;
and heaven and earth, moon and stars — indeed, to which of the elements did they not think it necessary to render the glory befitting God? For deep was the darkness of their ignorance;
1:1107
and, just as Paul says, they worshiped the creation rather than the Creator.
1:1108
既然律法頒布者急切地要使他們脫離埃及人的殘暴、脫離那苦毒的奴役,並要召他們進入應許之地,他便吩咐他們要毫無保留、徹底地卸下埃及的謬誤;
But since the lawgiver was eager to free them from the cruelty of the Egyptians and from that bitter slavery, and indeed was calling them into the land of promise, he commanded that they cast off the error of Egypt entirely, without any partial half-measure;
1:1109
saying: 'Take heed, lest, looking up to heaven, and seeing the sun, and the moon, and the stars, and all the host of heaven, you go astray and worship them.'
1:1110
「耶和華你的神,耶和華是獨一的。」既然也必須藉著顯而易見的事實,某種程度上強使他們——彷彿是不情願地——承認天本是被造之物;
'The Lord your God, the Lord is one.' But since it was somehow necessary also, through a manifest fact, to compel them, as it were even against their will, to confess that heaven indeed has been made [i.e. is a created thing];
1:1111
並且要他們在安息日休息之時,明白這節期的緣由;
and, as they rest on the Sabbath, he wishes them to know the reason for the feast;
1:1112
and that the servitude of the visible elements should not be unknown to them.
1:1113
This, then, is one reason for the rest on the Sabbath.
1:1114
因為堅固的教訓之糧,不該擺在仍是嬰孩的人面前;
For solid food of teachings is not to be set before those who are still infants;
1:1115
but before those whose senses have been trained by practice, as Paul says.
1:1116
所以,安息日的休息與放下工作,象徵著聖徒們在末後將要得著的安息;
The rest on the Sabbath, then, and the laying aside of works, signifies the rest of the saints that is to come at the end;
1:1117
那時他們不再從事工作與勞苦;
no longer engaging in works and labors;
1:1118
but having the merits of their past life as provisions for salvation, they will nourish their own souls unto immortal life.
1:1119
For this, I think, is what is signified by the requirement that the food for the Sabbath be prepared beforehand.
1:1120
至於不准任何人在安息日以重擔——即負荷——壓垮自己這一規定,依我們的理解,似乎正表明:在從死裡復活之後,按著那在上京城裡的安息,罪的重擔將不再加於我們身上;
And the rule that it is not permitted for anyone to weigh himself down with burdens, that is, with loads, on the Sabbath, seems to signify this, at least in our understanding: that after the resurrection from the dead, in the sabbath-keeping of the city above, the burden of sin will no longer lie upon us;
1:1121
惡者也不會再次引誘我們陷入不法而將我們壓碎;
nor will the evil one again crush us, enticing us into transgression;
1:1122
他自己在陰間承受永火的刑罰;
he himself undergoing in Hades the penalty of everlasting fire;
1:1123
while the sin now at work in us is altogether abolished.
1:1124
Moreover, the command to remain within the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath likewise seems, in the same way, to signify an abiding within.
1:1125
因為那些一旦得以列入聖徒歌詠隊伍、進入長子教會的人,將永不離開那充滿喜樂的安穩之境;
For those who have once taken their place among the choirs of the saints, and have entered the assembly of the firstborn, will never depart from that secure state of gladness;
1:1126
也不會離開賜給他們的恩賜;
nor will they go forth from the gift given to them;
1:1127
but they will abide in it forever, their minds fortified as by a tower through the grace of the Spirit.
1:1128
Everlasting gladness shall be upon their head.
1:1129
Ἐπὶ γὰρ.
因為讚美與歡騰必歸於他們頭上;
For upon their head shall be praise and rejoicing;
1:1130
pain and sorrow and sighing have fled away. And they will forget their former affliction, and it shall not come up upon their heart.
1:1131
That the Sabbath, in turn, signifies the rest that is to come for the saints at the consummation of the ages, let Paul himself enter as our witness, and let him speak to the Hebrews, writing concerning the men of old:
1:1132
Let us fear therefore, lest, while a promise remains of entering into his rest, any one of you should seem to have come short of it.
1:1133
For we too have had the gospel preached to us, just as they did. But since it seemed, to those who did not know how to understand, that here he was calling 'rest' the entrance into the land of promise which was accomplished through the leadership of Joshua —
1:1134
我是說那被稱為嫩的兒子的約書亞;
I mean Joshua, called the son of Nun;
1:1135
showing more clearly that he had no regard whatsoever for that rest, but looks to the one still expected, and that the aim of his reasoning is directed toward that, he says again next:
1:1136
For if Joshua had given them rest, he would not afterward have spoken of another day.
1:1137
There remains, therefore, a sabbath rest for the people of God — by 'sabbath rest' here he most clearly means the repose of the saints at the end of the age.
1:1138
And indeed, next he gives a precise indication of his meaning, adding as follows:
