1:970⧉ ⤴︎
'I will exalt you, O Lord, for you have upheld me, and have not let my enemies rejoice over me.'
1:971⧉ ⤴︎
那居於至高之處的神,怎會被那些被分派到卑下之地的人所尊崇呢?因為若神在天上、你在地下,你又怎能尊崇神呢?那麼,先知這話所要表達的是什麼呢?莫非「被尊崇」是指被那些能思想關乎神的偉大、合乎神尊嚴之事、並為神的榮耀而生活的人所尊崇嗎?那麼,凡憑知識急切奔向那福樂的人,便是尊崇了神;
How is he who dwells in the heights exalted by those who have been allotted the lowly region? For if God is above in heaven and you are below on earth, in what way could you exalt God? What, then, does the prophet's promise mean? Is it not, perhaps, that he is said to be exalted by those who are able to think great and God-befitting thoughts concerning him, and to live for the glory of God? He, then, who hastens with understanding toward blessedness, exalts God;
1:972⧉ ⤴︎
while he who turns to the opposite course—which it is not even lawful to say—as far as it depends on him, abases God.
1:973⧉ ⤴︎
And we, as it were, put upon God every condition that suits our own circumstances.
1:974⧉ ⤴︎
Whenever, then, perceiving the harm that comes of sleep, we say:
1:975⧉ ⤴︎
'Arise, why do you sleep, O Lord?'—yet 'he who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.'
1:976⧉ ⤴︎
又有些人彷彿使神轉開他的眼目,因為他們所行的實在羞恥,配不上神的眼目;
And certain others, as it were, turn away the eyes of God, on account of the shamefulness of what they do, unworthy as it is of the eyes of God;
1:977⧉ ⤴︎
who, having repented, say:
1:978⧉ ⤴︎
「你為何轉臉不顧?」在這些人之外,還有另一些人,他們被逐出了神的記念,彷彿使神將自己遺忘了;
'Why do you turn away your face?' And besides these there are others who have been cast out of the remembrance of God, and, as it were, bring it about that he forgets them;
1:979⧉ ⤴︎
who say, 'You have forgotten our poverty and our affliction.'
1:980⧉ ⤴︎
And, in short, men fashion the things said of God in a human, passion-like manner, making God for themselves to be such as each one has beforehand prepared himself to be.
1:981⧉ ⤴︎
I will extol you, therefore, O Lord, for you have upheld me, and have not let my enemies rejoice over me, bringing nothing low or groveling into my life.
1:982⧉ ⤴︎
And whence do I have the power to exalt you? Because you anticipated me and upheld me.
1:983⧉ ⤴︎
He has spoken the word 'You upheld' emphatically, meaning 'You raised me up' and made me higher than those rising up against me.
1:984⧉ ⤴︎
As if someone, taking by the hand a child inexperienced in swimming, should lift him up higher than the water.
1:985⧉ ⤴︎
He, then, who has recovered from his fall by the help of God, promises out of gratitude, through good works, to exalt God.
1:986⧉ ⤴︎
Or as when someone supports a weakening wrestler who is in danger of falling, and raises him above his opponent, thereby giving the one occasion for victory, while taking from the other the joy over his fall.
1:987⧉ ⤴︎
並不是那些為了試煉而臨到聖徒身上的患難,會為我們那些看不見的仇敵帶來喜樂;
Now it is not the afflictions brought upon the saints for the sake of trial that procure joy for our invisible enemies;
1:988⧉ ⤴︎
but rather, when we despair under affliction, and our thoughts are straitened, when we grow weary before the constant recurrence of hardships—then they rejoice, and clap their hands, and exult.
1:989⧉ ⤴︎
他的肉身流出膿水與蛆蟲;
his flesh boiled forth with matter and worms;
1:990⧉ ⤴︎
yet this was not joy for the adversary.
1:991⧉ ⤴︎
But if, yielding to his sufferings, he had uttered some blasphemous word at his wife's counsel, then the enemies would have rejoiced over him.
1:992⧉ ⤴︎
這在保羅身上也是如此,他曾飢餓、乾渴、赤身露體、被人擊打、勞苦、居無定所;
This was true also of Paul, when he was hungry, and thirsty, and naked, and buffeted, and toiling, and homeless;
1:993⧉ ⤴︎
he bore these struggles in such a way that he could speak of them with disdain, saying:
1:994⧉ ⤴︎
"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?" "O Lord my God, I cried out to you, and you healed me."
1:995⧉ ⤴︎
Blessed is he who recognizes the wound deep within himself, so that he is able to come to the Physician and say:
1:996⧉ ⤴︎
"Heal me, O Lord, for my bones are troubled;"
1:997⧉ ⤴︎
and, "I said, O Lord, have mercy on me; heal my soul, for I have sinned against you."
1:998⧉ ⤴︎
在此,這是為了臨到他身上的醫治而發的感恩之詞;
Here, then, there is thanksgiving for the healing that was brought upon him;
1:999⧉ ⤴︎
For, he says, "O Lord my God."
1:1000⧉ ⤴︎
God is not the God of all, but of those who have been made his own through love.
1:1001⧉ ⤴︎
For he is the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.
1:1002⧉ ⤴︎
But if he were the God of all, this would not have been attested of them as something exceptional.
1:1003⧉ ⤴︎
My God has helped you.
1:1004⧉ ⤴︎
The phrase "O Lord my God" is therefore an inward, heartfelt utterance, and fitting for the prophetic disposition.
1:1005⧉ ⤴︎
"I cried out to you, and you healed me."
1:1006⧉ ⤴︎
Nothing came between my voice and your grace, but as soon as I cried out, healing drew near.
1:1007⧉ ⤴︎
"For while you are yet speaking," it says, "I will say..."
1:1008⧉ ⤴︎
One who prays to God, then, must utter great words, so that healing may rise swiftly upon us.
1:1009⧉ ⤴︎
"O Lord, you brought up my soul from Hades."
1:1010⧉ ⤴︎
Concerning this healing, he who descended through weakness into Hades, but was brought up from Hades by the power of him who on our behalf wrestled down the one holding the power of death, gives thanks to God.
1:1011⧉ ⤴︎
"You saved me from those who go down into the pit."
1:1012⧉ ⤴︎
In many places, "pits" is the name given to underground excavations, designed for the imprisonment of captives.
1:1013⧉ ⤴︎
For thus it is said in Exodus:
1:1014⧉ ⤴︎
"From the firstborn of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the captive woman who was in the pit."
1:1015⧉ ⤴︎
他們也曾把耶利米扔進坑中;
But they also cast Jeremiah into a pit;
1:1016⧉ ⤴︎
and out of envy, Joseph's brothers shut him up in a pit that had no water.
1:1017⧉ ⤴︎
Every deed, then, either drags us down below, weighing us down through sin, or lifts us up on high, giving us wings toward God.
1:1018⧉ ⤴︎
You saved me, then, who was formerly living an evil life, by separating me from those descending into that darkened and frigid place.
1:1019⧉ ⤴︎
This, then, is the meaning of "You upheld me":
1:1020⧉ ⤴︎
that is, You brought me back from my downward course, so as to give my enemies no occasion to rejoice over me.
1:1021⧉ ⤴︎
What he says elsewhere, therefore—"Making my feet like the feet of a hind, and setting me upon high places"—he calls this ascent to the heights "deliverance from the pit" and "being upheld."
1:1022⧉ ⤴︎
"Sing praise to the Lord, you his holy ones."
1:1023⧉ ⤴︎
並不是凡用口說出詩篇話語的人,就是在向主歌頌;
It is not the case that whoever utters the words of the psalm with his mouth thereby sings praise to the Lord;
1:1024⧉ ⤴︎
but rather, those who offer up their psalmody from a pure heart, and who are holy, preserving righteousness toward God—these are able to sing praise to God, fittingly following the spiritual rhythms.
1:1025⧉ ⤴︎
How many here stand fresh from fornication, how many from theft!
1:1026⧉ ⤴︎
How many are hiding deceit, how many are hiding falsehood in their hearts!
1:1027⧉ ⤴︎
They think they are singing psalms, while in truth they are not singing at all.
1:1028⧉ ⤴︎
For the text calls the holy one to the singing of psalms.
1:1029⧉ ⤴︎
"A bad tree cannot bear good fruit," nor can an evil heart bring forth words of life.
1:1030⧉ ⤴︎
"Make the tree good, therefore, and its fruits good."
1:1031⧉ ⤴︎
Cleanse your hearts, that you may bear fruit in the Spirit, and, having become holy, be able to sing wisely to the Lord.
1:1032⧉ ⤴︎
"And give thanks in remembrance of his holiness."
1:1033⧉ ⤴︎
他沒有說「稱謝祂的聖潔」,而是說「稱謝對祂聖潔的紀念」;
He did not say, "Give thanks to his holiness," but, "to the remembrance of his holiness";
1:1034⧉ ⤴︎
For here "confession" is taken in the sense of thanksgiving.
1:1035⧉ ⤴︎
所以你們要感恩,因為你們如今已進入對祂聖潔的紀念之中;
Give thanks, therefore, that you have come to be in remembrance of his holiness;
1:1036⧉ ⤴︎
you who formerly, by sinking deep into wickedness and being defiled with the impurities of the flesh, had fallen into forgetfulness of the holiness of him who made you.
1:1037⧉ ⤴︎
Therefore, for the atonement of your sins, confess the wrongs you have previously committed amiss.
1:1038⧉ ⤴︎
"For wrath is in his indignation, and life is in his will."
1:1039⧉ ⤴︎
他先說了那嚴峻可畏的事——神怒氣中的忿怒;
First he spoke of the grim matter—wrath in the indignation of God;
1:1040⧉ ⤴︎
then the more cheerful matter—life in his will.
1:1041⧉ ⤴︎
For "indignation" is the judgment that certain grim things be brought upon the one deserving them, while "wrath" is already the suffering, the punishment brought by the just Judge according to the measure of the wrongdoing.
1:1042⧉ ⤴︎
What I am saying will become clearer by an example.
1:1043⧉ ⤴︎
Having noted the inflamed and festering part, the physician determines that an incision is necessary for the patient.
1:1044⧉ ⤴︎
This is what Scripture calls "indignation."
1:1045⧉ ⤴︎
After the physician's decision concerning the remedy, there follows the action that carries out what was determined, and the blade cutting and causing pain to the one being operated on.
1:1046⧉ ⤴︎
This is what has been called "the wrath of God."
1:1047⧉ ⤴︎
Come, then, to the passage before us, and you will discover the coherence of its meaning.
1:1048⧉ ⤴︎
"For wrath is in his indignation."
1:1049⧉ ⤴︎
也就是照著神公義的審判而施行的懲罰;
That is, punishment according to the righteous judgment of God;
1:1050⧉ ⤴︎
"But life is in his will."
1:1051⧉ ⤴︎
那麼他說的是什麼呢?神所願意的,就是眾人都分享祂的生命;
What then does he say? That what God wills is this: that all should partake of his life;
1:1052⧉ ⤴︎
but the circumstantial afflictions are not brought about by his will, but are inflicted according to the desert of those who have sinned.
1:1053⧉ ⤴︎
Life, then, God grants to each by his own will, but wrath each one stores up for himself, "in the day of wrath and revelation and righteous judgment of God."
1:1054⧉ ⤴︎
聖經素來習慣把令人愁苦的事放在較美好的事之前;
It is customary for Scripture to place the grievous things before the more pleasant;
1:1055⧉ ⤴︎
because enjoyment is sweeter when the things that cause grief have gone before it.
1:1056⧉ ⤴︎
"For I will kill," he says, "and I will make alive."
1:1057⧉ ⤴︎
因為是祂使人受苦,又是祂使人復原;
For he himself causes pain, and again he restores;

He lets the afflictions come first, so that the graces may become more lasting for us, once we have vigorously striven to keep what has been given.
1:1060⧉ ⤴︎
"Weeping shall lodge in the evening, and joy in the morning."
1:1061⧉ ⤴︎
Remember the time of the Lord's passion, and you will find what is signified.
1:1062⧉ ⤴︎
因為晚上哭泣曾寄宿於主的門徒中間,當他們看見祂懸掛在十字架上的時候;
For in the evening weeping lodged with the Lord's disciples, when they saw him hanging on the cross;
1:1063⧉ ⤴︎
but joy in the morning, when after the resurrection they ran about with joy, giving one another the good news of the vision of the Lord.
1:1064⧉ ⤴︎
Or perhaps, universally, this age is called "evening," in which those who have wept blessedly will be comforted when the morning comes.
1:1065⧉ ⤴︎
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted."
1:1066⧉ ⤴︎
"Blessed are those who weep, for they shall laugh."
1:1067⧉ ⤴︎
Those, then, who spend the days of this age—already at its consummation and declining toward its own setting—in weeping over their own sins, these shall rejoice when that true morning comes.
1:1068⧉ ⤴︎
"For those who now sow in tears shall reap in joy;"
1:1069⧉ ⤴︎
"But I said in my prosperity:"
1:1070⧉ ⤴︎
"I shall never be moved, forever."
1:1071⧉ ⤴︎
正如一座城市的豐裕,是指市場上待售貨品的充盈豐富;我們也說一片土地豐裕,是指它出產了眾多的果實;
Just as a city's prosperity is the abundance of goods for sale in the market, and we say a land is prosperous when it has yielded abundant crops;
1:1072⧉ ⤴︎
照樣,靈魂也有一種豐裕,就是充滿了各樣善工的豐裕;
so too there is a certain prosperity of the soul, one that is filled with works of every kind;
1:1073⧉ ⤴︎
which must first be tilled with diligence, and then be enriched by the abundant streams of the heavenly waters, so that it may bear fruit thirtyfold, and sixtyfold, and a hundredfold, and obtain the blessing that says:
1:1074⧉ ⤴︎
"Blessed are your storehouses, and your remaining stores."
1:1075⧉ ⤴︎
因此,那覺察到自己穩固的人,必滿懷信心地宣告,並堅定地確言自己不會被那對抗者所傾覆,如同蒙主祝福的豐盛田地一般;
He, then, who perceives his own stability will speak with confidence, and will affirm that he will not be overturned by the adversary, like a full field which the Lord has blessed;
1:1076⧉ ⤴︎
"Lord, in your will you granted strength to my beauty."
1:1077⧉ ⤴︎
那些致力鑽研有關德行之論述的人曾說,某些德行是由〔理論〕原理所構成,而另一些則沒有這樣的原理;
Those who have spent much labor on the examination of the account concerning the virtues have said that some of the virtues consist of theoretical principles, while others are without such theoretical principles;
1:1078⧉ ⤴︎
例如,明智是由關於善事與惡事之範疇的原理所構成;
for instance, that prudence consists of theoretical principles, in the domain concerning good things and bad things;
1:1079⧉ ⤴︎
節制則出於關於當選取之事與當迴避之事的原理;
and temperance from that concerning things to be chosen and things to be avoided;
1:1080⧉ ⤴︎
勇敢則出於關於可畏之事與不可畏之事的原理;
and courage from that concerning things fearful and things not fearful;
1:1081⧉ ⤴︎
but beauty and strength are virtues without theoretical principles, following upon those that arise from theoretical principles.
1:1082⧉ ⤴︎
因為按照靈魂各原理之間的均稱與和諧,某些智者曾以此來理解美;
For according to the due proportion and harmony of the soul's theoretical principles, some of the wise have understood beauty;
1:1083⧉ ⤴︎
and according to the effective accomplishment of what is suggested by the theoretical virtues, they have understood strength.
1:1084⧉ ⤴︎
Yet, in order that beauty may also come upon the soul, and a power capable of accomplishing what is needful, we need divine grace for this.
1:1085⧉ ⤴︎
As, then, he has said above, "That life is in his will;"
1:1086⧉ ⤴︎
so now he exalts God through thanksgiving, saying, "In your will you granted strength to my beauty."
1:1087⧉ ⤴︎
For I was beautiful by nature, but weak because of having been put to death in transgression through the plotting of the serpent.
1:1088⧉ ⤴︎
To my beauty, then, which I received from you at my first formation, you added the power to perform what is needful.
1:1089⧉ ⤴︎
因此,凡在其本有各種能力之均稱中被觀照的靈魂,都是美的;
Every soul, then, that is contemplated in the due proportion of its own faculties, is beautiful;
1:1090⧉ ⤴︎
but true beauty, and most lovely, contemplated only by the one whose mind has been purified, is that which pertains to the divine and blessed nature.
1:1091⧉ ⤴︎
He who has gazed intently upon its splendors and graces partakes of something from it, as if being dyed with a certain vivid radiance upon his own countenance, as from some tincture.
1:1092⧉ ⤴︎
Hence also Moses, by partaking of that beauty while conversing with God, had his face glorified.
1:1093⧉ ⤴︎
He, then, who perceives his own virtue utters this word of thanksgiving:
1:1094⧉ ⤴︎
"Lord, in your will you granted strength to my beauty."
1:1095⧉ ⤴︎
But just as beauty and strength, being without theoretical principles, follow upon the theoretical virtues, so also there are certain vices without theoretical principles, namely ugliness and weakness.
1:1096⧉ ⤴︎
For what is more unseasonable and more hideous than a soul given over to passion? Look, I bid you, at the one who is enraged, and the savagery within him.
1:1097⧉ ⤴︎
Behold the one who grieves, and the abjectness and collapse of soul within him.
1:1098⧉ ⤴︎
至於那被淫慾或貪食所征服、或被恐懼所驚駭的人,又有誰能忍心正眼看他呢?因為靈魂的狀態會一直滲透到身體的四肢末端;
And as for the one enslaved by lusts or gluttony, or terrified by fears, who could even bear to look upon him? For the disposition of the soul passes through even to the extremities of the body;
1:1099⧉ ⤴︎
just as, then, the traces of the soul's beauty also shine through in the demeanor of the holy person.
1:1100⧉ ⤴︎
We must, then, take care for this beauty, so that the Bridegroom, the Word, upon accepting us, may say:
1:1101⧉ ⤴︎
"You are all beautiful, my companion, and there is no blemish in you."
1:1102⧉ ⤴︎
"But you turned away your face, and I became troubled."
1:1103⧉ ⤴︎
"As long as," he says, "the rays of your visitation shone upon me, I continued in a stable and untroubled condition;"
1:1104⧉ ⤴︎
but when you turned away your face, the passionate and disturbed state of my soul was exposed.
1:1105⧉ ⤴︎
God is said to turn away his own face when, in times of circumstance, he abandons us to trials, so that the vigor of the one who struggles may be made known.
1:1106⧉ ⤴︎
If, then, the peace that surpasses all understanding guards our hearts, we are able to escape the disturbance and confusion of the passions.
1:1107⧉ ⤴︎
既然掩面是與神的旨意相對立,而擾亂又是與美、與姣好、與力量相對立;
Since, then, the turning-away stands opposed to the will of God, while disturbance stands opposed to beauty and comeliness and strength;
1:1108⧉ ⤴︎
disturbance, then, would be a shame and weakness of the soul, arising from estrangement from God.
1:1109⧉ ⤴︎
Let us pray, then, that the face of God may always shine upon us, so that we may be in a demeanor befitting the sacred, and gentle, and in every way untroubled, out of readiness for what is good.
1:1110⧉ ⤴︎
"For I was prepared," he says, "and I was not troubled."
1:1111⧉ ⤴︎
"To you, O Lord, will I cry, and to my God will I make supplication."
1:1112⧉ ⤴︎
It has often been said concerning crying out to the Lord, that crying out belongs only to the one who desires great and heavenly things.

But if someone should ask God for small and earthly things, he uses a small and low voice, one that does not reach the heights, nor come to the ears of the Lord.

Let us also, then, pray, and cry out with the spiritual cry, asking for great things, not striving on behalf of the flesh ("for those who are in the flesh cannot please God"), so that the Lord may hearken to us as well, having mercy on our weakness, and that we too, having enjoyed the divine help, may say:

Joy from God does not come to just any soul, but if someone has wept much over his own sin, with strong lamentations and unceasing dirges, making mourning for himself as though for one who had died, for such a person the mourning is turned into joy.

But if no one can say "Lord Jesus" except in the Holy Spirit, how could you bring forth praise, not having the upright spirit renewed within your inward parts? "Give thanks to the Lord on the harp; sing to Him on the ten-stringed psaltery."

The works of the body, then, give thanks to God as it were from below;
1:1180⧉ ⤴︎
but the mysteries proclaimed through the mind have their occasion from above, as it were resounding through the spirit.
1:1181⧉ ⤴︎
The one, then, who looks to all the commandments, and makes, as it were, a harmony and concord of them, this one sings to God on the ten-stringed psaltery, because the general commandments written at the first giving of the law are ten in number.
1:1182⧉ ⤴︎
"Sing to the Lord a new song."
1:1183⧉ ⤴︎
That is: Do not serve God in the oldness of the letter, but in the newness of the spirit.
1:1184⧉ ⤴︎
The one who does not take the law in a bodily sense, but recognizes its spiritual meaning, this is the one who sings the new song.
1:1185⧉ ⤴︎
And the new and ever-renewed song that has taken us in succession is the teaching of the Lord, which renews our youth like the eagle's, whenever we destroy the outer man, and are renewed day by day.
1:1186⧉ ⤴︎
But also the one who stretches forward to the things ahead is ever becoming newer than himself.
1:1187⧉ ⤴︎
So that the one who is always becoming newer than himself sings an ever newer song to God.
1:1188⧉ ⤴︎
And what is newer is called either that which is unusual through familiarity, or that which has recently come into being.
1:1189⧉ ⤴︎
所以,你若述說主道成肉身那超乎一切本性的奇妙方式,你便是在唱一首更新、奇異的歌;
If, then, you recount the wondrous manner of the Lord's incarnation, which surpasses all nature, you sing a newer and strange song;
1:1190⧉ ⤴︎
and if you set forth the regeneration and renewal of the whole world that had grown old through sin, and proclaim the mysteries of the resurrection, then in this way too you sing a new and fresh song.
1:1191⧉ ⤴︎
Sing well to him with a shout of triumph.
1:1192⧉ ⤴︎
Hear the command.
1:1193⧉ ⤴︎
with an undistracted mind, with a sincere disposition
1:1194⧉ ⤴︎
正如一些優良的戰士,在戰勝仇敵、獲得凱旋之後,便向那賜予勝利的緣由獻上頌歌;
Just as good soldiers, after their triumphs over enemies, offer up hymns to the one responsible for the victory,
1:1195⧉ ⤴︎
Be of good courage, he says, I have overcome the world.
1:1196⧉ ⤴︎
What man is able to wage war against the evil one, unless, taking refuge in the protection of the commander-in-chief of the host, we from there, by the faith we have in him, strike our enemy and shoot our arrows? Sing well, then, with a shout of triumph.
1:1197⧉ ⤴︎
Now the shout of triumph is a certain inarticulate sound, resounding together in harmony from those who lock shields with one another in battle.
1:1198⧉ ⤴︎
Sing, then, in harmony and in unity of spirit, and in the union brought about through love.
1:1199⧉ ⤴︎
What then must we say as we sing? That the word of the Lord is upright.
1:1200⧉ ⤴︎
Upright too is the Word who is destined to be glorified, the Word of the Lord, who was in the beginning with God, and was God.
1:1201⧉ ⤴︎
And all his works are in faithfulness.
1:1202⧉ ⤴︎
What does he mean? Heaven is a work, earth is a work, the sea is a work, the air, all inanimate things, animate things, rational beings, irrational beings.
1:1203⧉ ⤴︎
How then are all things in faithfulness? What faith is there in inanimate things? What faith is that of irrational creatures? What faith is there in a stone? What faith is there in a dog? Neither the inanimate nor the irrational is in faith.
1:1204⧉ ⤴︎
Yet the statement excluded nothing, but embraced everything, when it said:
1:1205⧉ ⤴︎
All his works are in faithfulness.
1:1206⧉ ⤴︎
那麼這是什麼意思呢?他說:若你觀看穹蒼,以及其中的秩序,那便是引向信心的嚮導;
What then does he mean? If you look, he says, at the heaven and the order within it, it is a guide to faith;
1:1207⧉ ⤴︎
因為它藉著自身彰顯那工匠;
for through itself it reveals the craftsman;
1:1208⧉ ⤴︎
and if you look at the arrangements concerning the earth, through these too your faith in God is again increased.
1:1209⧉ ⤴︎
For it is not by observing God with fleshly eyes that we have come to believe in him, but by the power of the mind we discern the invisible through the things that are seen.
1:1210⧉ ⤴︎
All his works, then, are in faithfulness.
1:1211⧉ ⤴︎
即便你細察一塊石頭,它本身也帶有那創造者能力的某種明證;
Even if you examine a stone, it too has some proof of the power of the one who made it;
1:1212⧉ ⤴︎
and so too an ant, a gnat, a bee.
1:1213⧉ ⤴︎
Often the wisdom of the creator shines through even in the smallest things.
1:1214⧉ ⤴︎
For he who spread out the heaven and poured forth the immense masses of the seas is the same one who hollowed out the finest sting of the bee like a tube, so that through it the venom might be poured out.
1:1215⧉ ⤴︎
All his works, then, are in faithfulness.
1:1216⧉ ⤴︎
Let nothing be a pretext for your unbelief.
1:1217⧉ ⤴︎
This happened by chance, and that occurred spontaneously.
1:1218⧉ ⤴︎
Nothing among existing things is disordered, nothing indefinite, nothing that has come about at random, nor anything carried along by chance.
1:1219⧉ ⤴︎
Or, 'an evil coincidence,' or, 'an unlucky hour.'
1:1220⧉ ⤴︎
These are the sayings of the uneducated.
1:1221⧉ ⤴︎
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall without the divine will.
1:1222⧉ ⤴︎
How many are the hairs of the head!
1:1223⧉ ⤴︎
Not one of them is forgotten.
1:1224⧉ ⤴︎
你看這神聖之眼,連極微小之事也不能逃脫祂的鑒察;主喜愛憐憫和公平;
Do you see the divine eye, how nothing of the smallest things escapes its oversight? The Lord loves mercy and judgment;
1:1225⧉ ⤴︎
the earth is full of the mercy of the Lord.
1:1226⧉ ⤴︎
If God's judgment existed by itself, rendering to us severely according to our worth, in return for what we have done, what hope would there be? Who of all would be saved? But as it is, he loves mercy and judgment.
1:1227⧉ ⤴︎
Having made mercy, as it were, his assessor, set forward before the royal throne of judgment, thus he brings each one to judgment.
1:1228⧉ ⤴︎
If you should mark iniquities, O Lord, O Lord, who shall stand? Neither is mercy without judgment, nor is judgment without mercy.
1:1229⧉ ⤴︎
Before judgment, then, he loves mercy, and after mercy he comes to judgment.
1:1230⧉ ⤴︎
這兩者彼此相連,憐憫與審判同在;
These are yoked together with one another, mercy together with judgment;
1:1231⧉ ⤴︎
so that mercy alone might not produce laxity, nor judgment alone bring about despair.
1:1232⧉ ⤴︎
審判者願意憐憫你,願意將祂自己的慈悲分給你;
The judge wills to have mercy on you, and to impart to you a share of his own compassion;
1:1233⧉ ⤴︎
但倘若祂在你犯罪之後,見你謙卑、痛悔,為所行的惡事多次哀哭,毫不羞愧地將暗中所行之事公開,懇求弟兄們與你一同為治癒而勞苦,總之見你成了一個可憐憫的人,祂便毫不吝惜地將自己的憐憫供給你;
but if he finds you, after your sin, humble, crushed in heart, having wept much over your evil deeds, having unashamedly made public what was done in secret, having begged the brethren to labor together with you toward healing—if he sees you altogether become an object of pity, he supplies to you his mercy without stint;
