1:493⧉ ⤴︎
And teaching this, the Lord said that after the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven.
The punishment, then, is not an act of wrath, but the dispensation of the greatest wisdom;
所以,這懲罰並非出於忿怒,而是至大智慧的安排;
1:495⧉ ⤴︎
For in order that the human race might hate sin, as having become the cause of death, the all-wise one, after the transgression of the commandment, brings the sentence of death.
By this he contrives hatred toward sin, while at the same time preparing beforehand for the race the remedy of salvation, which through the incarnation of the Only-begotten brought about the resurrection from the dead and immortality.
But what harshness does the pronouncement contain, 'You are earth and to earth you shall return'? 'From earth,' he says, 'I formed you, and I transformed you into a nature far better;'
'return to your former nature.'
But why does the sin seem to be small? He had given him authority over all the plants, and had forbidden the eating of one alone;
但這罪過為何顯得微小呢?神曾把一切樹木都賜給他權柄享用,只禁止他吃唯獨一樣的果子;
1:500⧉ ⤴︎
yet he, leaving aside all the others, plucked this fruit both first and alone;
而他卻撇下其他一切,唯獨先摘取了這一樣果子;
1:501⧉ ⤴︎
for this indeed the Lord God also reproached him;
因為主神也正是為此責備了他;
1:502⧉ ⤴︎
for 'who,' he says, 'told you that you were naked, unless you have eaten from that very tree which I commanded you alone not to eat, and you have eaten from it?' And the devil too made this clear through what he said to Eve:
'Is it true that God said, You shall not eat of any tree in paradise?' But if he had seen them having already eaten, he would not have supposed that they had received the commandment concerning all the trees.
Therefore the transgression is not small;
因此,這過犯絕非微小;
1:505⧉ ⤴︎
for they partook first of the very thing alone which they had been commanded not to partake of.
Why is it that, although God had said, 'In whatever day you eat of the tree you shall die the death,' he did not die immediately upon transgressing the commandment? This charge is self-contradictory;
神既曾說『你吃那樹上的果子,那日必定死』,為何他違犯誡命之後並未立即死去呢?這一指控本身自相矛盾;
1:507⧉ ⤴︎
for a little while ago, calling God harsh, you now accuse him of his love for mankind;
因為方才你們還稱神為嚴酷,如今卻又指責他對人的仁愛;
1:508⧉ ⤴︎
but one ought rather to praise, and not accuse, the goodness of God.
For he is accustomed to threaten greater things, but to bring punishments lesser than the threats;
因為神素來慣於發出較重的威嚇,卻施行比威嚇更輕的懲罰;
1:510⧉ ⤴︎
and this one can find in many places in divine Scripture;
這一點在聖經中多處都可以見到;
1:511⧉ ⤴︎
here, however, he named the boundary of mortality 'death';
然而在此處,他是把必死的界限稱為『死』;
1:512⧉ ⤴︎
for thus also Symmachus translated it: 'In whatever day you eat of the tree, you shall be mortal.'
For after the divine pronouncement, he awaited death, so to speak, every single day;
因為在神宣判之後,可以說他天天都在等候死亡臨到;
1:514⧉ ⤴︎
thus also those who have believed in the Lord Christ, even while being slaughtered, live, awaiting the resurrection and the kingdom of heaven.
What is to be understood by the 'garments of skin'? The allegorists say that the 'skins' are the mortal flesh;
『皮子做的衣服』當如何理解呢?寓意解經者說,這『皮子』指的就是必死的肉體;
1:516⧉ ⤴︎
but certain others have said that these were fashioned from the bark of trees.
I myself, however, accept neither of these;
但我兩者皆不接受;
1:518⧉ ⤴︎
for the one is over-contrived, and the other altogether fanciful.
For since divine Scripture says that the body was formed even before the soul, how is it not fanciful to say that they received mortal flesh only after the transgression of the commandment? And as for busying oneself over the question of where God got skins from, and thereby devising a novel kind of garments, this seems to me superfluous.
One must, therefore, be content with what is written, and know that nothing is impossible for the Creator of all things, and marvel at his infinite goodness, in that he cares even for those who have transgressed, and did not overlook them, naked and in need of covering.
What is the meaning of 'Behold, Adam has become as one of us'? Since the devil had said, 'You shall be as gods, knowing good and evil,' but Adam instead received the sentence of death by transgressing the commandment, the God of all said this ironically, showing the falsehood of the devil's promise;
『看哪,亞當已經變得像我們中的一個』這話是什麼意思呢?因為魔鬼曾說『你們必如神一樣知道善惡』,然而亞當卻因違犯誡命而受了死的判決,萬有的神因此譏諷地說了這話,藉此顯明魔鬼應許的虛妄;
1:522⧉ ⤴︎
but he prevented him from partaking of the fruit of the tree of life, not out of envy toward him of immortal life, but so as to check the course of sin;
至於神阻止他取食生命樹的果子,並非嫉妒他得著不死的生命,而是要遏止罪惡的進程;
1:523⧉ ⤴︎
death, therefore, is a remedy, not a punishment;
所以,死亡乃是一種醫治,而非懲罰;
1:524⧉ ⤴︎
for it checks the impulse of sin;
因為它遏止了罪的衝動;
1:525⧉ ⤴︎
for 'he who has died,' it says, 'has been justified from sin.'
And he ordered him to dwell opposite paradise, so that, coming to remembrance of the griefless life, he might hate sin as the procurer of the toilsome life.
If Cain was grieved because his offerings were not accepted, it is clear that he repented;
若該隱因他所獻的祭物未蒙悅納而憂愁,顯然他是懊悔了;
1:528⧉ ⤴︎
for grief belongs to those who repent.
It was not his own fault that grieved him, but his brother's success;
使他苦惱的並非自己的過失,而是他兄弟的順遂;
1:530⧉ ⤴︎
for this also Aquila hinted at:
'and Cain became exceedingly angry, and his countenance fell.'
'And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry?' What sign did God set upon Cain? The very decree of God was itself the sign, preventing him from being killed;
『耶和華對該隱說:你為什麼發怒呢?』神給該隱立了什麼記號呢?神所立下的那道禁令本身就是那記號,使他免於被殺;
1:533⧉ ⤴︎
and also the trembling of his limbs made him conspicuous and easily known.
But this was not, at that time, a crime, since no law forbade it;
但這在當時並不構成罪責,因為當時並沒有律法禁止這事;
1:535⧉ ⤴︎
moreover, it was not even possible for the race to be increased in any other way;
況且,人類要繁衍增多,也別無他法;
1:536⧉ ⤴︎
so as to establish all the nations of mankind;
為要使人類的萬邦得以由此而立;
1:537⧉ ⤴︎
first, so that they might know the sameness of their nature, as having sprung from one pair;
首先,是要使他們知曉本性的同一,因為他們是出於同一對夫妻所生;
1:538⧉ ⤴︎
and then also, that they might be joined together in concord, as having blossomed from a single root.
For if, even though these things were ordained by the God of all, countless murders are still dared, what would they not have done, had they supposed themselves to have sprung from different fathers? For this reason he formed one man from the earth, and from him fashioned one woman;
因為,即使這一切都是由萬有的神所安排制定的,人們仍敢犯下無數的殺戮之事;倘若他們自以為是出於不同的先祖,他們又會做出什麼事來呢?正因如此,神才從地上塑造了一個男人,又從這男人造出一個女人;
1:540⧉ ⤴︎
and from these two he filled the whole inhabited world with the race.
For this reason, then, he permitted at the beginning the intermarriage of siblings; but when the race had increased, he forbade this marriage as unlawful.
For this very reason he preserved, together with Noah and his sons, their wives also in the ark, so that their children might be joined to their female cousins.
Whom did Lamech slay? Not two, as some have supposed, nor Cain, as others have fabled, but one, and this one a youth;
拉麥殺了誰呢?並非如某些人所以為的兩人,也不是如另有些人所編造神話那樣是該隱,而是一個人,並且是個年輕人;
1:544⧉ ⤴︎
for he says, 'I have slain a man to my wounding, and a young man to my hurt;'
that is, a man of young age.
He escaped punishment, however, on account of his confession of the sin;
然而他因承認了自己的罪,便得以逃脫懲罰;
1:547⧉ ⤴︎
and by pronouncing sentence against himself, he averted the divine sentence.
Where did the God of all transfer Enoch? One must not inquire into things passed over in silence;
萬有的神將以諾遷往何處呢?經上未曾言明之事,我們不應追問;
1:549⧉ ⤴︎
but it is fitting to be content with what is written.
I myself think that the God of all did this for the encouragement of the athletes of virtue;
但我認為,萬有的神這樣做,是為要鼓舞那些為德行而爭戰的人;
1:551⧉ ⤴︎
for since Abel, who had become the first fruit of righteousness, was cut off both prematurely and root and branch, and the hope of the resurrection did not yet encourage mankind,
因為亞伯本是義行的頭一個果子,卻過早地被連根剪除,而那時復活的盼望尚未能鼓舞世人;
1:552⧉ ⤴︎
the God of all transferred Enoch, who had pleased him, and separated him from the life of mortals, so that each of those who choose to live piously might reason, as being honored by this very consideration, that he who honored this man will not leave Abel without recompense, since he is indeed just, and justly governs all things.
For this reason, then, he allowed the one to be slain, but transferred the other, so that by this one's exaltation he might signify the resurrection that was to come;
正因此故,神容讓那一位被殺害,卻將另一位遷移,好藉著這位被高舉之人來預示將來的復活;
1:554⧉ ⤴︎
for he who has not obtained the recompenses of virtue in this present life will clearly enjoy them in another life.
Why, then, when Adam had sinned, did the righteous Abel die first? He willed that the foundation of death should be made unsound;
亞當犯罪之後,為何義人亞伯反倒先死呢?神有意使死亡的根基變得不穩固;
1:556⧉ ⤴︎
for if Adam had died first, death would have had a strong foundation, having received as its first corpse the one who had sinned;
因為倘若亞當先死,死亡就會有堅固的根基,因為它所接納的第一個死者正是犯罪之人;
1:557⧉ ⤴︎
but since it received first the one who was slain unjustly, its foundation is unstable.

Whom did Moses call 'sons of God'? Certain senseless and utterly foolish people have supposed these to be angels, thinking perhaps that they would thereby have an excuse for their own licentiousness, if they were to lay such charges upon the angels;
摩西所稱的『神的兒子們』是指誰呢?有些愚昧至極、毫無見識的人竟以為這是指天使,他們大概以為,若把這樣的事歸咎於天使,自己的放蕩便能因此得到辯解;

He calls the rulers 'gods' in this way, as what follows makes clear: 'How long will you judge unjustly and accept the persons of sinners? Judge for the orphan and the poor; do justice for the lowly and the needy,' and so on.

For the race of Seth had been kept separate and did not mingle with those descended from Cain, on account of the curse brought upon him by the God of all;
因為塞特的家系原是分開的,並不與該隱的後裔相混雜,這是由於萬有之神曾對該隱降下咒詛的緣故;

but after a long time had passed—for God brought on the flood more than two thousand years later—they, seeing that the daughters of Cain's kindred were fair of form, and being charmed, as is likely, by the musical instruments devised by that line (for Jubal, who flourished among them, invented the psaltery and the harp), mingled with them and corrupted their own nobility;
但過了很長一段時間之後——因為神是在兩千多年之後才降下洪水——他們見該隱親族的女兒容貌美麗,又想必是被那家系所發明的樂器所迷惑(因為出自其中興盛一時的猶八,發明了豎琴和琴瑟),便與她們交合,敗壞了自己原有的高貴血統;

One must note this, however: that the divine word does not simply accuse them of sin, but of lawlessness pursued with diligence and zeal.

but as for those who incline altogether toward licentiousness and wickedness, and make their reason a slave of the passions, so as even to devise further forms of evil—and this not once or twice, but throughout their whole life—of what pardon are they worthy? And what punishment would not be small for those who have thus given themselves over to destruction? Whom does divine Scripture call 'giants'? Some say those who had lived many years;
至於那些完全倒向放縱與邪惡、使理性淪為情慾之奴隸,甚至進一步構思出各種新惡行——而且不是一次兩次,乃是終其一生如此的人,又配得什麼寬恕呢?對這樣自甘墮落走向滅亡的人,又有什麼刑罰能算輕微呢?聖經所稱的『巨人』究竟是指誰?有人說是指那些活了許多年歲的人;

And since the races of irrational animals also had been created for the use of men, these too were destroyed together with men, except for those preserved in the ark together with Noah.

for since he was about to permit men to partake of meat, and since those nourished by him were also going to offer to him sacrifices of piety, he ordered that a greater number of the clean animals be preserved;
因為祂即將准許人吃肉,而蒙祂養育的人也將要向祂獻上敬虔的祭物,所以祂吩咐要多留潔淨的動物;
1:625⧉ ⤴︎
three pairs for the increase of the species, and the one remaining for sacrifice.
For immediately after the cessation of the punishment, Noah offered a thank-offering sacrifice to God;
因為懲罰一停止,挪亞便立刻向神獻上感恩的祭;
1:627⧉ ⤴︎
'from all the clean cattle,' it says, 'and from all the clean birds'—so that it is evident that it was for this very reason that he commanded seven of each clean kind to be brought into the ark, so that Noah, in offering the one animal of each kind, might not thereby destroy the pairs.
For God said to him:
'And you shall take for yourself of all the foods that you eat, and you shall gather them to yourself, and it shall be food for you and for them.'
From the beginning, God did not ordain for men to eat meat;
起初,神並未立法准許人吃肉;
1:631⧉ ⤴︎
For, he said, 'Behold, I have given you every seed-bearing plant that sows seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree that has in itself fruit yielding seed, shall be yours for food; and to all the wild beasts of the earth, and to all the birds of heaven, and to every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth, which has in itself the breath of life, [I have given] every green plant for food.'
So that it is clear that both men and animals abstained from eating flesh, and had as food the fruits that grow from the earth.
How is it to be understood that 'the Lord remembered Noah'? Divine Scripture converses with human beings in a manner suited to them, and adapts its words to what they are able to hear.
Just as, then, in the case of God, 'repentance' signifies a change of dispensation;
正如論到神時,「後悔」一詞所指的是計畫(安排)的改變;
1:635⧉ ⤴︎
for 'I have repented that I anointed Saul as king' means, 'I have resolved to set up another in his place'; so here too one must understand 'I considered that I made man' as meaning, 'I resolved to bring utter destruction upon them.'
So too this phrase, 'God remembered Noah,' does not hint at any prior forgetfulness, but reveals his ineffable love for mankind;
因此,「神記念挪亞」這句話並非暗示先前有所遺忘,而是彰顯神那不可言喻的仁愛;
1:637⧉ ⤴︎
for because of his tender affection for him, he commanded that vast and immeasurable water to be swallowed up as quickly as possible.
And making manifest his indescribable goodness, he added that this was also for all the cattle, all the birds, and all the creeping things that were with him in the ark.
And it was for our sake that he deemed even these creatures worthy of his providence;
而神眷顧這些受造物,也是為了我們的緣故;
1:640⧉ ⤴︎
'who makes grass grow for the cattle, and green plants for the service of man.'
And again, 'Man and beast you preserve, O Lord.'
for it is for our sake that he also cares for what belongs to us.
What is meant by 'the Lord smelled a sweet savor'? He welcomed the gratitude of Noah, not taking delight in the smell of burnt fat;
「主聞了馨香之氣」是什麼意思?這是指神悅納挪亞的感恩之心,而非因烤肉的氣味而喜悅;
1:644⧉ ⤴︎
for nothing has a more offensive odor than burning bones; rather, he praised the intention of the one who offered it.
For he does not have bodily parts, that we should even attribute a nose to him;
因為神並無身體的肢體,我們豈能為祂安上鼻子呢;
1:646⧉ ⤴︎
he therefore repays him with a blessing;
於是祂便以祝福回報挪亞;
1:647⧉ ⤴︎
and since he was the seed of the human race and the root of its nature, and a second Adam, God gives him the same blessing which that first man had enjoyed as soon as he was formed;
既然挪亞是人類的種子、本性之根,是第二個亞當,神便賜給他那祝福,正是頭一個亞當被造成之後隨即享有的祝福;
1:648⧉ ⤴︎
'Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and have dominion over it;'
'and the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon all the wild beasts of the earth, and upon all the birds of heaven, and upon everything that moves upon the earth, and upon all the fish of the sea, which I have given into your hand.'
And the word became deed;
這話便成了事實;
1:651⧉ ⤴︎
for all creatures fear even the mere shadow of man—the swimming creatures, the land creatures, and the winged creatures alike.
Then he gave him the law concerning the eating of flesh, commanding him to partake of meat as of vegetables.
For what reason does he forbid the partaking of blood? He taught this more clearly in the Law:
'For that which the soul is to man, blood is to the irrational animals,' he says.
Therefore, if you partake of the flesh apart from the blood, you will surely be partaking of it as of vegetables;
因此,若你食肉而不帶血,那便如同食用蔬菜一般;
1:656⧉ ⤴︎
but if you should partake of it with the blood, you are eating a soul;
但若你連血一同食用,那便是在吃靈魂了;
1:657⧉ ⤴︎
wherefore also here he said, 'Only flesh with the blood of its soul you shall not eat;'
'for indeed I will require your blood, that of your souls;'
'from the hand of every beast I will require it; from the hand of a man's brother I will require the life of man.'
Here he hints at the resurrection—not as though he would bring wild beasts before the tribunal and exact penalty from them for devouring men, but as one who will gather together and raise up the bodies that have been consumed by them;
這裡暗示了復活的道理——並非說神要把野獸帶上審判台,向牠們追討吃人之罪,而是說神要將被牠們所吞噬的身體重新收聚並使之復活;
1:661⧉ ⤴︎
'for in his hand are the ends of the earth;'
and it is an easy thing for him to gather our body together from every quarter;
對祂而言,從各處收聚我們的身體,實在是輕而易舉的事;
1:663⧉ ⤴︎
here, then, he has revealed this in a riddling manner;
因此,這裡祂以隱晦的方式顯明了此事;
1:664⧉ ⤴︎
but through Ezekiel he proclaimed the resurrection more clearly.
But after the flood he generously grants more abundant food, commanding that birds, swimming creatures, and land animals alike be slaughtered and eaten;
但洪水之後,神慷慨地賜下更豐富的食物,吩咐人可以宰殺並食用飛鳥、水族與陸上的走獸;
1:666⧉ ⤴︎
driving out one passion by another, and curing the greater by means of the lesser;
以一種情慾驅逐另一種情慾,並以較輕者醫治較重者;
1:667⧉ ⤴︎
for God, foreseeing that those who had fallen into the depths of irrationality would deify all these creatures, permitted their consumption in order to put an end to that impiety;
因為神預見那些墮入極度愚昧的人,將會把這一切受造物奉為神明,於是准許人食用牠們,好終止這種不敬虔的行為;
1:668⧉ ⤴︎
for it is the height of folly to worship that which is eaten.
For this very reason he calls some of the animals unclean and others clean, so that men, abhorring the former as unclean, should not deify them, and should not worship the latter, since they are eaten.
For being the first of men to press out the fruit of the vine, and ignorant not only of the proper measure of drinking but also of the manner of partaking—that one must first mix it with water and only then drink—he suffered a stupor;
因為挪亞是人類中第一個榨取葡萄之果實者,他不僅不知飲用的適量,也不知飲用之法——即應先兌水而後才可飲用——於是便陷入了昏醉之中;
1:671⧉ ⤴︎
and in being exposed naked he suffered nothing unprecedented;
他赤身露體,其實並非什麼新鮮之事;
1:672⧉ ⤴︎
for even now some people become uncovered while sleeping, since sleep removes their awareness;
因為即使在今日,也有人在睡眠中赤露身體,因為睡眠奪去了人的知覺;
1:673⧉ ⤴︎
and when drunkenness is added to sleep, it makes the excuse for his nakedness all the more plausible.
Since the Law that commands honoring father and mother had not yet been given, how is Ham judged as a smiter of his father? The Creator has implanted in nature the necessary laws.
Thus he also condemned Cain, since nature itself taught him that murder is unlawful;
神照樣定了該隱的罪,因為本性已教導他殺人是違法的;
1:676⧉ ⤴︎
for at once, employing deceit as his accomplice, he led his brother far away from their parents and killed him; and when God inquired, 'Where is Abel your brother?' he denied it;
因為該隱隨即以詭計為助手,將弟弟引誘到遠離父母之處,殺害了他;而當神問道:「你兄弟亞伯在哪裡?」他卻加以否認;
1:677⧉ ⤴︎
and it is clear that he denied what he had dared to do because he knew that what had happened was evil;
顯然他之所以否認自己所犯下的罪行,正是因為他知道所發生的事乃是邪惡的;
1:678⧉ ⤴︎
but when he was convicted by the just Judge, he confessed that he had sinned beyond forgiveness;
但當他被公義的審判者定罪之後,他便承認自己所犯的罪已超乎赦免的範圍;
1:679⧉ ⤴︎
for he says, 'My sin is greater than that I should be forgiven.'
And indeed Adam too, upon perceiving the divine visitation, tried to escape notice, as one who knew that acting secretly is evil;
事實上,亞當在察覺神聖的顯現臨到時,也曾試圖躲藏不被發現,如同深知偷偷摸摸行事本是邪惡的一般;
1:681⧉ ⤴︎
so also Ham incurred the accusation of being a smiter of his father, as one who had transgressed the law of nature;
照樣,含也承受了忤逆父親的指控,因為他違背了本性的律法;
1:682⧉ ⤴︎
For that nature also taught men to honor their parents is testified by the brothers of Ham, who, having learned of their father's condition from him, walked backward and covered their father with great reverence, so that they might by no means see the source from which they themselves had sprung and been born;
而本性也教導人當尊敬父母,這一點可由含的兄弟們作證:他們從含那裡得知父親的窘態後,便懷著極大的敬意倒退著走去遮蓋父親,好使他們絕不至看見自己所由出生之處;
1:683⧉ ⤴︎
and so it was quite fitting that they reaped their father's blessing.
Why, when Ham had sinned, did his son receive the curse? All alike, after the flood had ceased, had shared in the divine blessing;
為何含犯了罪,卻由他的兒子承受咒詛呢?洪水止息之後,眾人皆同蒙神聖的祝福;
1:685⧉ ⤴︎
Noah therefore considered it a bold thing to bring a curse upon one who had partaken of the divine blessing;
因此挪亞認為,向一個已蒙神聖祝福之人加以咒詛,實屬僭越之舉;
1:686⧉ ⤴︎
for this reason he placed the curse upon that man's son instead;
因此他將咒詛轉加在含的兒子身上;
1:687⧉ ⤴︎
and this punishment also has its own justice.
for since it was as a son that he sinned against his father, he receives his punishment through the curse laid upon his own son.
In addition to this, one must also consider the following: that if Ham himself had received the curse, the punishment would have passed on to his entire line;
此外,還須考慮另一點:若含本人直接承受咒詛,這懲罰便會波及他的整個後裔;
1:690⧉ ⤴︎
but he directed the discipline instead to the youngest son alone; and one should also know this, that the words of the righteous man are a prophecy, not a curse;
而神只將懲戒轉向他最幼小的兒子;此外還當知道,這位義人的話語其實是預言,而非咒詛;
1:691⧉ ⤴︎
for since Israel, tracing its descent from Shem, was destined to receive dominion over Palestine;
因為以色列既是閃的後裔,日後必要接管巴勒斯坦之地的統治權;
1:692⧉ ⤴︎
and this land was of old inhabited by those who had sprung from Canaan;
而這片土地自古以來,正是由迦南的後裔所居住;
1:693⧉ ⤴︎
he casts his prophecy in the form of a curse, foretelling what was to come, while at the same time deterring those who would come afterward from offending against their parents.
and the blessing given to Shem teaches us this clearly;
而閃所領受的祝福清楚地教導我們這一點;
1:695⧉ ⤴︎
for he says, 'Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem;'
'and Canaan shall be his servant.'
For he did not subject him to both of the brothers, but to Shem alone;
因為他並非使迦南臣服於兩兄弟之下,而只臣服於閃一人;
1:698⧉ ⤴︎
and he foretold abundant offspring for Japheth, but piety for Shem;
他為雅弗預言了眾多的子孫,卻為閃預言了敬虔;
1:699⧉ ⤴︎
for he foretold that God would dwell in the tents of Shem;
因為他預言神將住在閃的帳篷裡;
1:700⧉ ⤴︎
and indeed he did dwell in the patriarchs who came from Shem, and in the prophets who sprang from them.
both formerly in the tabernacle, and afterward in Jerusalem
But the prophecy attained its exact fulfillment: the mystery of the dispensation.
for these also derived their lineage from Shem
but the servitude of Canaan received its fulfillment in the Gibeonites
Some of the teachers said that the asphalt was unslaked lime.
Being ignorant, as is likely, of the springs in Assyria, they supposed that the tower was built with lime.
But I have learned precisely from those who came from there, that there are springs which gush forth this substance together with water,
and that, mixing it into structures built in the water, they laid the baked brick upon it.
Thus, they say, that tower was built; and eyewitnesses of it affirmed that they also dug through a certain part, and ascertained precisely that asphalt was laid beneath the baked bricks,
in Assyria, they say, and for this reason bricks were used instead of stones.
For Adam and Cain and Abel and Noah are names peculiar to the Syrian tongue,
for it is the Syrians' custom to call the red earth 'adamtha'.
Adam, then, is interpreted either as 'earthly' or as 'made of dust', and Cain as 'possession'; and celebrating this, Adam said:
'I have gotten a man through God.'
for he was the first to be seen dead;
因為他是第一個被人看見死去的人;
1:716⧉ ⤴︎
and he was the first to bring grief upon those who had begotten him.
Whence, then, did the Hebrew language begin? I think it to be a sacred tongue;
那麼,希伯來語究竟是從何而起的呢?我認為它是一種神聖的語言;
1:718⧉ ⤴︎
for just as in the Greek temples there were certain proper letter-forms which they called 'hieratic', so also through Moses the God of all gave this language, one that was taught, not natural.
Accordingly, whereas all others speak according to the tongue of the nation in which they are born—those born in Italy using the language of the Italians, those in Greece that of the Greeks, those in Persia that of the Persians, and those in Egypt that of the Egyptians—
the children of the Hebrews are not found using the Hebrew tongue from the outset, but rather that of the people among whom they were born;
唯獨希伯來人的孩子,一開始並非使用希伯來語,而是使用他們出生所在民族的語言;
1:721⧉ ⤴︎
then, when they become youths, they are taught the letters,
等到他們長成少年,才開始學習文字;
1:722⧉ ⤴︎
and through the letters they learn the divine Scripture, written in the Hebrew tongue.
'he heard a tongue which he did not know.'
But some say that the language was called 'Hebrew' from Eber;
但有些人說,這語言之所以稱為「希伯來語」,是源於希伯(Eber);
1:725⧉ ⤴︎
for he alone remained in the former tongue, and from him they were named 'Hebrews.' But I think that they were named 'Hebrews' from the fact that the patriarch Abraham came from the land of the Chaldeans into Palestine, having crossed over the river Euphrates,
因為唯獨他仍保留原初的語言,於是由他而得「希伯來人」之名。但我認為,「希伯來人」之名,其實是源於先祖亞伯拉罕從迦勒底地渡過幼發拉底河,來到巴勒斯坦這件事;
1:726⧉ ⤴︎
for in the Syrian tongue 'hebra' means 'crossing over';
因為在敘利亞語中,「赫布拉」(hebra)意即「渡過」;
1:727⧉ ⤴︎
and thus he himself was also called [this]; and the divine Scripture bears witness,
for after the captivity of Lot, someone came, it says, and reported to Abraham the crosser;
因為在羅得被擄之後,經上說,有人前來,向亞伯拉罕這「渡河者」報信;
1:729⧉ ⤴︎
and I found this rendered in the Hebrew [text] as 'hebrei';
我在希伯來原文中查得此處作「赫布雷」(hebrei);
1:730⧉ ⤴︎
and 'hebrei', when rendered into Greek, becomes 'Hebraios'.
For indeed, in that passage where the Egyptian woman spoke concerning Joseph:
'You have brought in to us a Hebrew servant to mock us'—in the Hebrew [text] 'hebrei' is found.
But if they are called 'Hebrews' from Eber, then it would not be fitting for these alone to be so named;
但若他們是因希伯而稱為「希伯來人」,那麼理當不只他們才配得這個稱呼;
1:734⧉ ⤴︎
for many nations trace their lineage from Eber,
因為有許多民族都是從希伯承續而來的宗族;
1:735⧉ ⤴︎
and, to pass over all the others, from him come the Ishmaelites, and those from Keturah, and the Idumeans, and the Amalekites, and the Moabites, and the Ammonites, and those who inhabit Carrhae,
姑且撇開其餘不論,從他而出的就有以實瑪利人、基土拉的後裔、以東人、亞瑪力人、摩押人、亞捫人,以及居住在迦蘭(Carrhae)的人;
1:736⧉ ⤴︎
for they trace their lineage from Nahor and Laban.
but none of these uses the Hebrew tongue.
But it is superfluous to wrangle contentiously over this;
不過,就此事爭辯不休實屬多餘;
1:739⧉ ⤴︎
for nothing harms the doctrine of piety, whether we accept this [view] or that.
Some say that Pharaoh had union with Sarah.
What kind of care, then, did Abraham enjoy from the God of all, if He looked on while his wife was being made an adulteress? And why indeed did He afflict Pharaoh with great and grievous plagues, and all his house, unless He wished to prevent the unlawful union? And Pharaoh himself puts forward his ignorance as a defense:
and he reproaches Abraham for having called his wife his sister,
他責備亞伯拉罕把自己的妻子稱作妹妹;

and he shows that he did not violate her, but took her wishing to marry her.
1:744⧉ ⤴︎

'For what is this you have done to me, that she is your wife? Why did you say, "She is my sister," so that I took her to myself as wife? And now, behold, your wife is before you—take her and go.'
