1:255⧉ ⤴︎
for he has an eternal nature, while the angels have him as maker and creator, having received their being from him; and the demons, moreover, turned themselves willingly to wickedness.
...of wicked demons, and of the sea of goodness —
But the Jews ran aground upon another folly;
但猶太人卻陷入了另一種荒謬的狂妄之中;
1:258⧉ ⤴︎
for they say that the God of all spoke to himself, 'Let us make man,' in imitation, as it were, of those entrusted with great offices;
因為他們聲稱,萬有之神是對自己說「我們要造人」,這乃是仿照那些被託付重大權柄之人的說話方式;
1:259⧉ ⤴︎
for governors and generals too are accustomed to speak in the plural, saying 'we command,' 'we write,' 'we order,' and all such things;
因為總督與將領們也慣於用複數說「我們命令」、「我們書寫」、「我們吩咐」等等這類話語;
1:260⧉ ⤴︎
and these deranged men did not perceive that the God of all speaks most things in the singular;
然而,這些昏聵的人卻沒有察覺,萬有之神在大多數場合都是用單數說話的;
1:261⧉ ⤴︎
for, he says, 'the end of every man has come before me,' and 'I was grieved that I had made man,' and 'I will blot out man,' and 'you shall have no other gods besides me,' and 'behold, I make new things, which now spring forth,' and 'I will open fountains upon the mountains, and rivers upon the hills.'
And in nearly all of divine Scripture, for the most part, one may hear the God of all speaking in the singular;
在幾乎整部神聖經文中,人們大多聽見萬有之神是用單數說話的;
1:263⧉ ⤴︎
but rarely does he shape his speech in the plural, thereby manifesting the number of the persons of the Trinity.
For indeed, when he confounded the tongues, he did not say in the singular, 'I will go down and confound the tongues,' but 'Come, let us go down and confound their tongues.'
And here too, since he was fashioning the rational creature which after many generations he was going to renew by the invocations of the Holy Trinity, accomplishing the all-holy baptism — being about to bring into being the nature that would receive those mysteries — he intimated, in a riddling manner, both the identity of the essence and the number of the persons;
這裡也是同樣的道理:由於祂正在塑造這有理性的活物——這活物在許多世代之後,將藉呼求聖三之名成全那至聖的洗禮而得更新——祂既即將創造那將要領受這奧祕的本性,便以隱謎的方式,同時顯明了本質的同一,以及位格的數目;
1:266⧉ ⤴︎
for by saying, 'God said,' he indicated the commonality of the divine nature;
因為藉著說「神說」,祂顯明了神聖本性的共同性;
1:267⧉ ⤴︎
but by adding, 'let us make,' he manifested the number of the persons.
So again, by saying 'image' in the singular, he showed the identity of the nature;
同樣地,祂用單數說「形像」,顯明了本性的同一;
1:269⧉ ⤴︎
for he did not say, 'according to images,' but 'according to image.'
but by saying 'our,' he indicated the number of the hypostases;
而祂說「我們的」,則顯明了位格(實體)的數目;
1:271⧉ ⤴︎
for the God of all, foreseeing all things — those not yet come to be as though already come to be — and foreseeing beforehand the incarnation and enanthropesis of the Only-begotten, and how he would take this nature from a virgin, and would so join and unite it to himself that it would be understood as one person of God and man, and that one act of worship would be offered to him by all creation — very fittingly deemed worthy of the greatest honor this very foundation of the race as well;
因為萬有之神預見萬事,將尚未發生之事視如已然發生一般;祂預先看見獨生子將要成肉身並成為人,且將從童貞女領受這人性,並要如此將這人性與自己聯合為一,使之被視為神與人合一的一個位格,並使全體受造之物向祂獻上同一的敬拜;正因如此,祂極其合理地也將人類這根基(始祖)賦予了至高的尊榮;
1:272⧉ ⤴︎
and first he set forth a counsel concerning the creation, so that he might signify beforehand the rational nature of the one being created;
祂首先擺出了受造之前的商議,為要預先表明所造之物具有理性的本性;
1:273⧉ ⤴︎
then, having intimated the number of the persons, so that the one who was to offer hymns upon the earth might receive intimations of theology;
接著又暗示了位格的數目,使那將來要在地上獻上頌讚的人,能領受關於神學(三一奧祕)的隱謎啟示;
1:274⧉ ⤴︎
and having become, as it were, the very worker of his own molding, he showed the greater tenderness he held toward this creature.
This also the noble Job cries out to him, saying:
'Your hands made me and fashioned me.'
In addition to these, the Creator himself, both through Jeremiah and through Isaiah, says that we are clay, and he is our potter.
But we do not say that the divine has hands, nor that it needs any deliberation or forethought, so that, in accordance with the myths of Plato, it might fashion its work according to a form conceived in thought;
然而,我們並不是說神性擁有手,也不是說祂需要任何商議或預先思慮,彷彿依照柏拉圖的神話那樣,按照心中所構想的理型來製作受造物;
1:279⧉ ⤴︎
but each of these things shows the greater care of God for this living being.
What is 'according to image'? Some have called the invisible part of the soul the image of God;
「照著形像」是什麼意思呢?有些人稱靈魂那不可見的部分為神的形像;
1:281⧉ ⤴︎
But they have not spoken truly.
For if the invisible part of the soul is the image of God, then angels and archangels, and all the incorporeal and holy natures, would more properly be called images of God,
inasmuch as they are altogether set free from bodies, and possess what is invisible in unmixed purity.
But some, out of great foolishness, say that the human body was made according to the image of God,
since they give ear to the divine Scripture when it says:
'Open your eyes and see, and incline your ear and hear'; and 'the Lord smelled a scent of sweetness'; and 'the mouth of the Lord has spoken these things'; and 'in his hand are the ends of the earth'; and such other expressions.
And since we ourselves see by means of eyes, it names his power of sight 'eyes';
又因為我們是藉著眼睛觀看的,經文便把祂觀看的能力稱為『眼睛』;
1:288⧉ ⤴︎
and again, in turn, it names his power of hearing 'ears', since it is by these members that we hear.
But they ought not to have listened only to these words, but also to those which teach the illimitable nature of God.
For it says: 'Where shall I go from your Spirit, and where shall I flee from your presence? If I ascend into heaven, you are there; if I descend into Hades, you are present'; and so on.
1:291⧉ ⤴︎
And to the Samaritan woman the Lord said:
'God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.'
But if God is spirit, then he is simple, and uncompounded, and without shape.
But indeed it is superfluous to prolong this discussion.
As for 'Let us make man according to our image and likeness', some of the teachers have understood it thus:
that the God of all, having made both the sensible and the intelligible creation, formed man last, having set him, as it were a certain image of himself, in the midst of things inanimate and animate, and sensible and intelligible,
so that the inanimate and the animate things might render service to him, as it were a kind of tribute,
好叫無生命與有生命之物向人獻上服事,如同一種貢賦;
1:298⧉ ⤴︎
while the intelligible natures, in their solicitude for him, might display their goodwill toward the one who made him.
For this too the divine apostle said:
'Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for the sake of those who are about to inherit salvation?' And the Lord in the Gospels: 'See that you do not despise one of these little ones.'
'For amen I say to you, that their angels continually behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.'
But some have said that man was made according to the image of God with respect to dominion, employing as their clearest proof the fact that the Maker went on to say: 'and let them rule the fish of the sea, and the birds of heaven, and the cattle, and all the earth, and all the creeping things that creep upon the earth.'
For just as he himself has lordship over all things, so he gave man authority over the irrational animals; and one can find other examples too as imitations of the archetype.
For man too, in imitation of God who made him, fashions houses and walls and cities and harbors and ships and dockyards, and chariots and countless other things,
因為人也仿效那造他的神,建造房屋、城牆、城市、港口、船隻、船塢,以及戰車和其他無數的東西;
1:305⧉ ⤴︎
such as representations of heaven, and likenesses of sun and moon and stars, and images of men and irrational animals; but the difference between the two kinds of making is infinite.
For the God of all creates both out of things that exist and out of things that do not exist, and without toil or time;
因為萬有的神,無論從已存在之物或從不存在之物,都能造出萬物,並且不費勞苦,也不需時間;
1:307⧉ ⤴︎
for at the very moment of willing, he brings into being what he has determined.
But man needs matter, and he needs also tools, and deliberation, and reflection, and time, and toil, and other arts as well, for the making of what comes to be.
For the builder needs the smith, and the smith needs the miner, and the charcoal-burner;
因為建築師需要銅匠,銅匠需要礦工,也需要燒炭的人;
1:310⧉ ⤴︎
and all of them together need the woodcutters, and the woodcutters need the planters and the farmers;
而他們眾人一同都需要伐木工,伐木工又需要栽種者和農夫;
1:311⧉ ⤴︎
and thus each art begs from the other arts the service it needs for itself.
But even in creating in this way, man imitates, in some manner, the Maker, as an image imitates its archetype;
然而人即使如此行造,某種程度上仍是仿效那造他者,正如形像仿效原型一般;
1:313⧉ ⤴︎
for indeed an image bears the likeness of its archetype,
but it has the form of the members, though it does not have their functions;
只是它有肢體的形狀,卻沒有肢體的作用;
1:315⧉ ⤴︎
for it is deprived of the soul by which the body is moved.
So again, man both reigns and judges in imitation of the God of all;
照樣,人作王、施行審判,也是仿效萬有之神;
1:317⧉ ⤴︎
but God, when passing judgment, needs neither accusers nor witnesses;
不過神施行審判時,既不需要控告者,也不需要見證人;
1:318⧉ ⤴︎
for thus he condemned Cain also, having become an eyewitness of his abominable deed;
因為祂定該隱的罪也是如此,祂親眼目睹了那污穢之事;
1:319⧉ ⤴︎
but man, when judging, needs both witnesses and accusers;
但人施行審判時,卻既需要見證人,也需要控告者;
1:320⧉ ⤴︎
Thus man has also been named god, since he has been called the image of God;
照樣,人也被稱為神,因為他被稱為神的形像;
1:321⧉ ⤴︎
for it says, 'a man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God';
因為經上說:『男人不該蒙著頭,因為他是神的形像和榮耀』;
1:322⧉ ⤴︎
but again, the God of all has a divine nature, not a bare title;
然而萬有的神所擁有的是神聖的本性,而非徒有虛名;
1:323⧉ ⤴︎
whereas man, as an image, has only the name, being deprived of the reality.
So too, illimitability truly and properly belongs to the God of all;
照樣,那不可限定之性,真正而本然地屬於萬有的神;
1:325⧉ ⤴︎
yet the human mind too imitates it in some such way;
然而人的心思也在某種程度上仿效這一點;

for in an instant it roams over the regions of the east and the west, the north and the south, both the things above the heavens and the things beneath the earth,

Whereas God possesses illimitability in essence, and in wisdom, and in power alike;

1:329⧉ ⤴︎
one might also find yet another, more precise imitation, again in the soul of man;
人們還可以在人的靈魂之中,找到另一種更為精確的仿效;
1:330⧉ ⤴︎

and the mind begets the word, while the breath goes forth together with the word — not begotten as the word is, but ever accompanying the word, and going forth together with it as it is begotten.
But these things belong to man only as to an image, and for this very reason the word and the breath in him have no independent subsistence.
But in the case of the Holy Trinity we conceive three hypostases, united without confusion, and each subsisting in itself.
For God the Word has been begotten of the Father before the ages;
因為神的道,在萬世以前就已從父被生出;
1:335⧉ ⤴︎
yet he is inseparable from the one who begot him; and the all-holy Spirit proceeds from God the Father,

Question: Why ever did God bless the seventh day above the rest? Answer: Each of the other days received a work of creation proper to itself;
問:神為何特別祝福第七日?答:其他各日都各自領受了某種創造之工;
1:341⧉ ⤴︎
since, then, he had by this day finished making the whole of creation, he gave to the seventh day, in place of a work of creation, the blessing, so that it alone should not remain unhonored in comparison with the others.

As for 'he sanctified it', he has put this in place of 'he set it apart';

1:343⧉ ⤴︎
for one can find this so understood in many places in the divine Scripture;
因為在神聖經文中,常常可以看見這樣的用法;
1:344⧉ ⤴︎
for indeed concerning the Medes it says, 'they are sanctified, and I am leading them' — that is, they have been set apart for this purpose.
Moreover, since he was writing these things for Jews, he necessarily put 'he sanctified it', so that they might render greater reverence to the Sabbath;
此外,他既是為猶太人記述這些事,就必須加上『祂使這日成聖』一語,好叫他們對安息日給予更多的敬重;
1:346⧉ ⤴︎
for this too he said when giving the Law: 'for in six days the Lord your God made heaven and earth;'
'but on the seventh day he rested from all his works which he had made, and he sanctified it.'

Question: What is meant by 'and a spring went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the earth'? Answer: Here again, in summary, the writer has recounted the account of creation, and has taught that God brought forth the elements out of what did not exist, and that he separated these from one another, and that he set each of them in order as he willed, and that, although man was not yet tilling the earth, nor the clouds yet travailing to bring forth rain, the earth put forth vegetation as the Creator willed, having for its irrigation the moisture and dampness that remained in it after the separation of the waters.

For thus Aquila also rendered it: 'and a gushing forth went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground.'

Question: If the soul came into being from the divine breathing, is the soul, then, of the essence of God? Answer: Such a notion belongs to the utmost impiety and blasphemy;
問:若靈魂是從神聖的吹氣而來,那麼靈魂豈不就出於神的本質嗎?答:這樣的想法,乃是極其不敬虔、褻瀆的看法;
1:351⧉ ⤴︎
For it was for this very reason that divine Scripture showed the ease of the creative act.
And in addition to this, it also hints at the nature of the soul: that it is a created spirit, invisible and intelligent, freed from the coarseness of bodies.
And this too one must observe: that one must first conceive of a lung, and the muscles that press upon it and contract it, and the windpipe naturally joined to the lung, and the palate and the mouth—and only then can the 'breathing in' be received.
But if the divine is incorporeal, then this 'breathing in' too must be understood in a manner befitting God.
Why ever did God plant paradise, when he was about immediately to banish Adam from it on account of sin?
First, the Lord God does not permit condemnation on the basis of mere foreknowledge;
首先,主宰萬有的神不容許僅憑預知便定人的罪;
1:357⧉ ⤴︎
therefore, even while foreseeing the transgression, he nonetheless imparted the good things to him.
Then, too, he wished him to come to know the divine gifts, so that, once deprived of them, he might hate sin, seeing that it had stripped him of so many good things.
Furthermore, it was fitting that the just president of the games set before the athletes of virtue the prizes of victory;
此外,公義的賽會總裁也理當為德行的競賽者預備勝利的獎賞;

Since divine Scripture says, 'And God caused to spring up yet more out of the earth every tree beautiful to behold and good for food,' it is exceedingly rash to abandon the teaching of the Spirit and follow one's own private reasonings.
Must the tree of life and the tree of knowing the knowledge of good and evil be called intelligible, or perceptible to the senses? Divine Scripture said that these too had sprouted out of the earth;
生命樹與那能使人分辨善惡的樹,應當說是屬靈可知的,還是感官可覺的呢?神聖的經文也說,這兩棵樹同樣是從地裡發出的;

For just as the wood of the cross is wood, yet is called 'saving' because of the salvation that accrues through faith concerning it, so also these trees are plants that have sprouted from the earth;
正如十字架之木本是木頭,卻因人對它所懷之信而帶來救恩,遂被稱為「拯救的〔木〕」,這兩棵樹同樣也是從地裡發出的草木;
1:366⧉ ⤴︎

and one they called 'the well of vision,' not because it bestowed the power of sight, but because the Lord of all appeared beside it;
他們稱其中一口為「異象之井」,並非因它賜人觀看的能力,而是因萬有的主曾在那裡向人顯現;

and 'the well of ample room,' because, whereas the men of Gerar often contended over the other wells, they did not trouble those who had dug this one;
又稱一口為「寬闊之井」,因為基拉耳人雖屢次為其他井與人爭競,卻沒有人來擾亂那挖了這口井的人;
1:373⧉ ⤴︎
thus also 'the well of the oath,' because the oaths were made beside it.

1:374⧉ ⤴︎
In this way Luz was named Bethel, that is, 'house of God,' because the Maker of all appeared to Jacob in that very place;
照樣,路斯也被改名為伯特利,意即「神的殿」,因為萬有的創造者曾在那地向雅各顯現;
1:375⧉ ⤴︎
not because the hill itself was ensouled, but because in that place they had made covenants with one another.

In like manner baptism is called 'living water,' not because the water of baptism has some other nature, but because through that water divine grace bestows eternal life.
Thus it was called the tree of life on account of the divine ordinance, and the tree of knowledge on account of the perception of sin that came about in connection with it;
照樣,一棵因神的判定被稱為生命樹,另一棵因罪的知覺是在其上發生,被稱為知識樹;

for, not having yet had any experience of sin, once they had partaken of the forbidden fruit, having thereby transgressed the commandment, they received the stings of conscience.

Did they, then, possess the knowledge of good and evil even before their partaking of the forbidden fruit? And how indeed could it be that those honored with reason and made according to the divine image did not possess the discernment of good and evil? And how could that unfathomable law of righteousness have been set for them, if they did not possess this knowledge in their nature, nor knew that to keep the commandment was good, but to transgress it was ruinous? They had, then, the knowledge;
那麼,難道他們在領受那被禁止的果子之前,就已經有了善惡的知識嗎?既然他們是蒙尊以理性、又照神的形像所造的,又怎能沒有分辨善惡的能力呢?倘若他們本性中並無這知識,也不知道持守誡命為善、干犯誡命為害,那深不可測的公義之律又怎能為他們立定呢?由此可見,他們原是有這知識的;

How then, after eating, did they come to know that they were naked, since before eating they had no such perception? Not even quite young children are naturally inclined to blush when stripped of clothing;

but as the body grows little by little, and the mind then begins to display its own proper nature, nakedness is no longer bearable for the young; rather, they blush and clothe themselves, and if someone should take away their garment, they cover their generative parts with their hands;
但隨著身體漸漸長大,心智也開始顯出自身的本性,赤身露體對少年人來說便不再是可以忍受的了;他們反倒羞赧,並穿上衣物;即便有人奪去他們的衣服,他們也會用手遮掩生殖之處;

for indeed sailors, sailing while naked, and bathers, seen naked by one another, do not feel this shame in that setting;
例如水手赤身行船,沐浴者彼此赤身相見,在那種場合中他們並無這種羞恥感;
1:385⧉ ⤴︎

In just this way, Adam and his companion, immediately upon being formed, being as it were infants, freshly born, and uninitiated into sin, were not ashamed to live without garments;
照樣,亞當一族剛被造成之時,如同嬰孩,天生純潔,未曾沾染罪,故此不穿衣物度日也不覺羞恥;

How does Moses say that the Tigris and the Euphrates flow out from paradise, when some say these gush forth from the mountains of Armenia? One may also observe other rivers that issue forth in one place, then pass into the earth through certain sinkholes, and gush forth again from above elsewhere;
摩西為何說底格里斯河與幼發拉底河是從樂園流出的呢?有人說,這兩條河其實是從亞美尼亞的群山湧出的。人們也能見到其他一些河流,先從某處湧出,隨後又沉入地下、經過某些洞穴,再從別處重新湧出;
1:389⧉ ⤴︎

萬有的神如此安排並非徒然,而是為要杜絕人多餘的好奇探究之心;

for if the whole course of these rivers were plainly evident, some, journeying along their banks, would have attempted to survey the region of paradise,

Why did he form the woman from the rib of Adam? The Maker of nature wished to bring the two sexes together into concord;

for this reason he formed Adam from the earth, but the woman from Adam, so as both to display the sameness of their nature and to instill in them a certain natural affection for one another;
為此,祂從地上造出亞當,又從亞當造出女人,好使兩者顯出同一的本性,並在他們之間植入某種天然的相互眷愛之情;

for if, even with things having come about in this way, men still quarrel with women and women with men, what would they not have done had he formed the woman from some other source altogether? Wisely, then, did he both divide them and again join them together;
因為,即便事情已如此安排,男人仍與女人相爭,女人也與男人相爭,倘若女人是從全然別的來源造出,他們豈不做得更甚呢?由此可見,祂實在是智慧地將他們分開,又再度使他們結合為一;

for through the marital union a single fruit springs forth from both, sown by the one, nourished by the other, and brought to completion by the Maker of nature.

若說蛇是「精明的」,難道牠因此就當受稱讚嗎?因為精明本是德行的一部分。然而許多名稱都是同名異義地被使用的;
1:404⧉ ⤴︎

蛇既是無理性的,牠怎能與夏娃交談呢?牠不過是那真理之敵的工具;
1:415⧉ ⤴︎

for since they had received from the God of all dominion over all irrational creatures, he brought the trap to her through one of her own subjects, thereby making the deception more plausible.
1:419⧉ ⤴︎

What is the meaning of 'the eyes of the two were opened'? It is plain to those willing to attend that even before the eating they did not have their eyes shut;
「二人的眼睛就開了」是什麼意思呢?對願意留心察看的人來說,這是顯而易見的:其實在吃之前,他們的眼睛也並未閉著;
1:424⧉ ⤴︎
for how did the woman see that the tree was good for food, and pleasant to the eyes to behold, and desirable to contemplate, if she did not have her eyes open? Therefore divine Scripture has called by this name the perception that came after the sin;
因為那婦人若非睜著眼睛,又怎能看見那樹好作食物、悅人眼目、且是可喜愛、能使人有智慧的呢?所以聖經正是以此稱呼犯罪之後的那種知覺;
1:425⧉ ⤴︎
for immediately after the sin the conscience is pricked.

Why, when it was the devil who brought forward the deception, is the serpent the one punished? Properly speaking, God brought the curse upon the one who actually worked the deed;
既是魔鬼施行了那欺騙,為何受懲罰的卻是蛇呢?其實嚴格說來,神已將咒詛加在那真正施行此事者身上;
1:427⧉ ⤴︎
for he did not receive this nature from the God of the universe;
因為他並非從萬有之神那裡領受了如此的本性;
1:428⧉ ⤴︎
for he was created good, and was made together with the incorporeal powers;
因為他起初原是被造為善的,且與那些無形的大能者(天使)一同受造;
1:429⧉ ⤴︎
but since he willingly inclined toward wickedness, he was deprived of the honor he had obtained from the beginning, and was cast down to the earth.
And the animal itself received the curse for the benefit of mankind;
而那動物(蛇)本身之所以受咒詛,也是為了人類的益處;
1:431⧉ ⤴︎
for when we see the serpent dragging itself and writhing upon the earth, we are reminded of the ancient curse;
因為我們一見蛇在地上蜿蜒爬行、蜷曲扭動,就想起那古時的咒詛;
1:432⧉ ⤴︎
and we learn how great are the evils that sin brings about, not only for those who commit it, but also for those who serve as its instruments.
And the serpent itself suffers no harm from this, being by nature accustomed to move in this manner;
而蛇本身其實並未因此受到任何損害,因為牠天生原就是這樣爬行的;
1:434⧉ ⤴︎
for it has this kind of movement in its very nature;
因為這樣的行動方式本是牠天性所固有的;

But man reaps much benefit from this.

For he foreknew that he too would transgress the commandment;
因為他早已預知,他自己也將違背這誡命;
1:438⧉ ⤴︎
besides, it would have been easy for the devil to bring about the deception through some other beast as well;
況且,魔鬼即便藉著另一種野獸來施行欺騙,也同樣輕而易舉;
1:439⧉ ⤴︎
but self-determination is the property of the rational being.

Of these, some kept their goodwill toward their Maker, while others inclined toward wickedness;
在這些理性受造者中,有些保守了對造物主的善意,有些卻傾向了邪惡;
1:441⧉ ⤴︎

這種情形在人類當中同樣可以見到;
1:442⧉ ⤴︎
for some are lovers of virtue, while others are workers of vice.
If, then, anyone finds fault with the creation of the wicked, he thereby robs the athletes of virtue of the prizes of victory;
因此,若有人因惡者的存在而責怪造物之事,那他其實是在剝奪德行競賽者得勝的獎賞;
1:444⧉ ⤴︎
for if they possessed their longing for virtue not by the choice of their own will, but as an innate immutability, then the contestants of piety worthy of the prize would have gone unnoticed;
因為倘若他們對德行的渴慕,不是出於己意的自由抉擇,而是與生俱來、不可更易的本性,那麼那些配得獎賞的敬虔競賽者也就無從彰顯了;
1:445⧉ ⤴︎
but since the will possesses the choice between good things and their opposites, these justly obtain the crowns of victory, while those pay the penalty for the sins they committed by their own choice.
You call God good — how then do you attach to him such severity? For it is a mark of cruelty and harshness to inflict so great a punishment on account of a small act of eating, not only upon those who sinned, but also upon those who sprang from them.
1:447⧉ ⤴︎

First, it is fitting for those who purpose to live piously to be persuaded that whatever is done or commanded by the God of the universe is holy, just, good, and benevolent toward mankind;
首先,凡有志於敬虔度日的人,都當確信:無論萬有之神所行或所命之事,皆是聖潔、公義、良善,且慈愛世人的;
1:448⧉ ⤴︎
for if we confess that he possesses all these attributes, we must also consider that what is administered and commanded by him must be of the same character.

Next, one must know that every law, even if it legislates concerning small matters, has the same force as one that commands the doing of the greatest things or forbids their doing;
其次應當知道:任何一條律法,縱使所論的是些微小之事,其效力仍與那命人行大事、或禁人行大事的律法無異;

For instance, the law commanding circumcision, when transgressed, works no harm to one's neighbor;
舉例來說,那吩咐行割禮的律法,即使被違犯,也不會對鄰人造成任何損害;
1:452⧉ ⤴︎
but nevertheless the lawgiver says that every uncircumcised male, who is not circumcised on the eighth day, shall be utterly destroyed.
And the very punishment he ordained for murderers and adulterers, this he also allotted to this transgressor.
But since it is likely that the ill-named heretics, who openly war against the Old Testament Scripture, will also accuse this law, I shall draw my proofs from the legislation of the Gospel;
但因那些惡名昭彰、公然與舊約聖經為敵的異端,很可能也會指控這條律法,所以我要從福音的立法中提出證明;
1:455⧉ ⤴︎
for we find in those laws that the one who looks upon a woman with lust is judged guilty of adultery;
因為我們在那些律法中發現:凡貪戀地看婦女的,就被判為犯了姦淫;
1:456⧉ ⤴︎
and the one who is angry without cause is liable to judgment;
又凡無故動怒的,難免受審判;
1:457⧉ ⤴︎
and the one who calls his brother 'Raca' is again answerable to the council;
凡罵弟兄是「拉加」的,難免受公會的審斷;
1:458⧉ ⤴︎
and the one who calls him 'fool' is deserving of Gehenna;
凡罵弟兄是「魔利」的,難免受地獄的火刑;
1:459⧉ ⤴︎
and the one who swears an oath, even if he swears truthfully, belongs to the devil's own faction.
Why then do they call this lawgiver good, but the lawgiver of the Old Testament harsh? For by their own standard these precepts are more severe than those.
But these are but the audacity of their blasphemy;
然而這不過是他們大膽妄言的褻瀆之詞;
1:462⧉ ⤴︎
we, however, know that both those laws and these belong to one and the same God;
但我們卻曉得,無論是那些律法,或是這些律法,都出於同一位神;
1:463⧉ ⤴︎
and the difference was brought about by the character of those for whom the laws were given.
For, like a wise teacher, he offered imperfect things to the imperfect, and perfect things to the perfect.
...penalties allowing no pardon, so that the rest, seeing the chastisement, might not dare the transgression.
This also came to pass with regard to the legislation of the Sabbath;
這事也同樣發生在有關安息日的律法上;
1:467⧉ ⤴︎
for the whole people stoned to death the one who had dared to gather sticks on the Sabbath, being the first to transgress the law concerning it;
因為那膽敢在安息日拾柴、且是頭一個違犯此律法的人,全體百姓都用石頭將他打死;
1:468⧉ ⤴︎
God having ordered this, so that, becoming with their own hands the agents of the punishment, they might shudder at the lawlessness as that which brings on such punishment;
這是神所吩咐的,為要使他們親手施行刑罰,以致對那招致如此懲罰的不法之事心生戰慄;
1:469⧉ ⤴︎
but at a later time, when many had transgressed the law concerning the Sabbath, the lawgiver bore the transgression with longsuffering;
但過了些時候,當許多人都違犯了有關安息日的律法時,立法者卻以忍耐容忍了這違犯;
1:470⧉ ⤴︎
thus he subjected Cain, the first to commit murder, to irremediable punishments, so that he might make those living in his time and after him afraid to dare the like;
照樣,神使頭一個犯下殺人罪的該隱,受到無可挽回的懲罰,好叫當時及後世的人心生畏懼,不敢再犯類似之事;
1:471⧉ ⤴︎
but when many murderers arose afterward, he did not immediately bring on the punishments;
但此後有許多殺人者相繼出現時,祂卻沒有立即降下懲罰;
1:472⧉ ⤴︎
it was fitting, then, that Adam also, as the first to receive a law—and a most light law at that—...
for he had given him abundance of fruits of every kind, and had forbidden the eating of one alone—should pay the penalty for his offense for the benefit of the race;
因為神已賜給他各樣果子的豐富,唯獨禁止他吃一種果子的緣故——理當為自己的過犯付上代價,以造福全人類;
1:474⧉ ⤴︎
But if, being prone to wrath, as the ill-named Marcion said, he inflicted the punishment of death on account of a small act of eating, how is it that when all men had run aground into impiety and utter lawlessness, he did not bring on total destruction, but gave his Son and granted salvation through the cross and the passion? And I say these things against those who suppose that the God of the universe did these things out of some wrath, and who are ignorant of the mystery of the economy of salvation;
但若如那惡名昭彰的馬吉安所言,神是易怒的,僅因一次微小的吃食就降下死亡的懲罰,那麼當全人類都陷入極度的不敬虔與極盡的不法之中時,祂為何不施行全然的毀滅,反倒賜下祂的兒子,且藉著十字架與受難恩賜了救恩呢?我說這些話,是針對那些以為萬有之神是出於某種忿怒而行此事、卻不明白救恩經綸奧祕的人;
1:475⧉ ⤴︎
for I think it is clear to those instructed in divine things that the God of the universe is not accustomed to do anything out of a change of mind;
因為我想,對那些受過神聖真理教導的人而言,這是顯而易見的:萬有之神從不曾因後悔而行事;
1:476⧉ ⤴︎
for this experience is proper to those who have a mutable nature, who are pleased now with these things, now with those, and are wholly ignorant of what is to come;
因為這樣的情感原是那些具有可變本性者所特有的,他們時而喜悅這些事,時而又喜悅那些事,對將來要發生的事一無所知;
1:477⧉ ⤴︎
but the God of the universe has an immutable nature;
然而萬有之神卻具有不可改變的本性;
1:478⧉ ⤴︎
and he knows the things not yet come to pass as though they had already come to pass.
For instance, foreseeing and foreknowing the things concerning Adam—that he would become mortal by transgressing the commandment—he prepared his nature accordingly beforehand;
舉例而言,神既預見並預知有關亞當的事——就是他將因違背誡命而變為必死的——便已預先為他配備了與此相稱的本性;
1:480⧉ ⤴︎
for he fashioned the formation of the body into male and female;
因為祂將身體的構造塑造為一男一女;
1:481⧉ ⤴︎
and such a constitution of bodies belongs to mortal beings, who need procreation for the continuance of the race;
而這樣的身體構造,正是屬於那些必死之物的——他們需要生育以延續種族;
1:482⧉ ⤴︎
for immortal nature has no need of the female.
For this reason the Maker brought forth the whole number of the incorporeal beings all at once;
因此,造物主是一次過將全數的無形受造者(諸天使)造齊的;
1:484⧉ ⤴︎
but of the mortal living creatures he made two of each kind, male and female;
但對於那必死的活物,祂卻是按著每一類各造兩個,一公一母;
1:485⧉ ⤴︎
and he bestowed on them the blessing of increase;
並且賜給牠們繁衍增多的祝福;
1:486⧉ ⤴︎
'Be fruitful,' he says, 'and multiply.'
So too he formed man male and female, and gave them the same blessing: 'Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and have dominion over it.'
Foreseeing these things, then, the God of the universe not only formed them in this way, but also gave them a law concerning food;
萬有之神既預見這一切,便不僅如此造了他們,也賜給他們一條有關飲食的律法;
1:489⧉ ⤴︎
'Behold,' he says, 'I have given you every seed-bearing herb that sows seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree which has in itself fruit of seed that sows seed; it shall be for food to you, and to all the beasts of the earth, and to all the birds of heaven, and to every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth, which has in itself a living soul;'
'and I have given you every green herb for food.'
For these things the God of all said to Adam before the commandment:
But food belongs to mortal beings, for an immortal nature has no need of nourishment.
