2:1 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἶπον γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς λογισάμενοι οὐκ ὀρθῶς ὀλίγος ἐστὶν καὶ λυπηρὸς ὁ βίος ἡμῶν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἴασις ἐν τελευτῇ ἀνθρώπου καὶ οὐκ ἐγνώσθη ὁ ἀναλύσας ἐξ ᾅδου
Dixerunt enim cogitantes apud se non recte : Exiguum et cum tædio est tempus vitæ nostræ , et non est refrigerium in fine hominis , et non est qui agnitus sit reversus ab inferis .
ይቤሉ ፡ በርእሶሙ ፡ ኢሐሊዮሙ ፡ ርትዐ ፡ እስመ ፡ ኅዳጥ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ንብረትነ ፡ ወማኅዘን ።
For they said within themselves, reasoning not aright, Short and sorrowful is our life; And there is no healing when a man comes to his end, And none was ever known that gave release from Hades.
2:2 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὅτι αὐτοσχεδίως ἐγενήθημεν καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐσόμεθα ὡς οὐχ ὑπάρξαντες ὅτι καπνὸς ἡ πνοὴ ἐν ῥισὶν ἡμῶν καὶ ὁ λόγος σπινθὴρ ἐν κινήσει καρδίας ἡμῶν
Quia ex nihilo nati sumus , et post hoc erimus tamquam non fuerimus . Quoniam fumus flatus est in naribus nostris , et sermo scintilla ad commovendum cor nostrum :
ወአልቦ ፡ ፈውስ ፡ ለሞተ ፡ ብእሲ ፡ ወአልቦ ፡ ዘተአምረ ፡ ዘገብአ ፡ እምሲኦል ፡ እስመ ፡ በከ ፡ ለሊነ ፡ ተፈጠርነ ፡ ወእምድኅረዝ ፡ ንከውን ፡ ከመ ፡ ዘኢተፈጠርነ ።
Because by mere chance were we born, And hereafter we will be as though we had never been: Because the breath in our nostrils is smoke, And while our heart beats reason is a spark,
2:3 ⧉ ⤴︎ οὗ σβεσθέντος τέφρα ἀποβήσεται τὸ σῶμα καὶ τὸ πνεῦμα διαχυθήσεται ὡς χαῦνος ἀήρ
qua extincta , cinis erit corpus nostrum , et spiritus diffundetur tamquam mollis aër ; et transibit vita nostra tamquam vestigium nubis , et sicut nebula dissolvetur quæ fugata est a radiis solis , et a calore illius aggravata .
እስመ ፡ ከመ ፡ ጢስ ፡ እስትንፋስ ፡ ዘውስተ ፡ አንፍነ ፡ ወከመ ፡ ቃለ ፡ ቀለምጺጽ ፡ በሑሰተ ፡ ልብነ ።
Which being extinguished, the body will be turned into ashes, And the spirit will be dispersed as thin air;
2:4 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ τὸ ὄνομα ἡμῶν ἐπιλησθήσεται ἐν χρόνῳ καὶ οὐθεὶς μνημονεύσει τῶν ἔργων ἡμῶν καὶ παρελεύσεται ὁ βίος ἡμῶν ὡς ἴχνη νεφέλης καὶ ὡς ὁμίχλη διασκεδασθήσεται διωχθεῖσα ὑπὸ ἀκτίνων ἡλίου καὶ ὑπὸ θερμότητος αὐτοῦ βαρυνθεῖσα
Et nomen nostrum oblivionem accipiet per tempus , et nemo memoriam habebit operum nostrorum .
ወእምከመ ፡ ጠፍአ ፡ ሐመደ ፡ ይከውን ፡ ሥጋነ ፡ ወመንፈስነሂ ፡ ይትከዓው ፡ ከመ ፡ ሳሕወ ፡ ደመና ፡ ወስምነሂ ፡ ይትረሳዕ ፡ በመዋዕል ፡ ወአልቦ ፡ መኑሂ ፡ ዘይዜክር ፡ ምግባራቲነ ።
And our name will be forgotten in time, And no man will remember our works; And our life will pass away as the traces of a cloud, And will be scattered as is a mist, When it is chased by the beams of the sun, And overcome by the heat thereof.
2:5 ⧉ ⤴︎ σκιᾶς γὰρ πάροδος ὁ καιρὸς ἡμῶν καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἀναποδισμὸς τῆς τελευτῆς ἡμῶν ὅτι κατεσφραγίσθη καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναστρέφει
Umbræ enim transitus est tempus nostrum , et non est reversio finis nostri : quoniam consignata est , et nemo revertitur .
ወየኀልፍ ፡ ንብረትነ ፡ ከመ ፡ አሠረ ፡ ኅልፈተ ፡ ደመና ፡ ወከመ ፡ ጊሜ ፡ ዘይትፈረዘዝ ፡ ወከመ ፡ አስሐትያ ፡ ቀጢን ፡ እንተ ፡ ተሰደ ፡ በእግረ ፡ አሜር ፡ እምላህቡ ፡ እንተ ፡ ፈለሰ ።
For our alloted time is the passing of a shadow, And our end retreats not; Because it is fast sealed, and none turns it back.
2:6 ⧉ ⤴︎ δεῦτε οὖν καὶ ἀπολαύσωμεν τῶν ὄντων ἀγαθῶν καὶ χρησώμεθα τῇ κτίσει ὡς ἐν νεότητι σπουδαίως
Venite ergo , et fruamur bonis quæ sunt , et utamur creatura tamquam in juventute celeriter .
እስመ ፡ ንብረትነ ፡ ከመ ፡ ጽላሎት ፡ ኃላፊ ፡ ወአልቦ ፡ ክልአት ፡ ለሞትነ ፡ እስመ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ዕቁብ ፡ ነገር ፡ ወኢይመይጦ ፡ መኑሂ ።
Come therefore and let us enjoy the good things that now are; And let us use the creation with all our soul as youth’s possession.
2:7 ⧉ ⤴︎ οἴνου πολυτελοῦς καὶ μύρων πλησθῶμεν καὶ μὴ παροδευσάτω ἡμᾶς ἄνθος ἔαρος
Vino pretioso et unguentis nos impleamus , et non prætereat nos flos temporis .
ንዑኬ ፡ ንትፈጋዕ ፡ በዘሀሎ ፡ ሠናያት ፡ ወንግበር ፡ ሐዋዘ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ፍጥረትነ ፡ በአስተሐምሞ ፡ እንዘ ፡ ሀሎነ ፡ በመዋዕለ ፡ ውርዛዌነ ።
Let us fill ourselves with costly wine and perfumes; And let no flower of spring pass us by:
2:8 ⧉ ⤴︎ στεψώμεθα ῥόδων κάλυξιν πρὶν ἢ μαρανθῆναι
Coronemus nos rosis antequam marcescant ; nullum pratum sit quod non pertranseat luxuria nostra :
ወይነ ፡ ብዙኀ ፡ ወዕፍረተ ፡ ምዑዝ ፡ ንትመላእ ፡ ወኢይኅል ፡ ፈኔ ፡ ጽጌ ፡ ደመና ።
Let us crown ourselves with rosebuds, before they be withered:
2:9 ⧉ ⤴︎ μηδεὶς ἡμῶν ἄμοιρος ἔστω τῆς ἡμετέρας ἀγερωχίας πανταχῇ καταλίπωμεν σύμβολα τῆς εὐφροσύνης ὅτι αὕτη ἡ μερὶς ἡμῶν καὶ ὁ κλῆρος οὗτος
nemo nostrum exsors sit luxuriæ nostræ . Ubique relinquamus signa lætitiæ , quoniam hæc est pars nostra , et hæc est sors .
ወንትቀጸል ፡ ጽጌ ፡ ረዳ ፡ ሠርዕነ ፡ ዘእንበለ ፡ ይጸመሂ ፡ ወይኩን ፡ መኑሂ ፡ ዘኢይሳተፍ ፡ እምጽጌ ፡ ትዕቢትነ ።
Let none of us go without his share in our proud revelry: Everywhere let us leave tokens of our mirth: Because this is our portion, and our lot is this.
2:10 ⧉ ⤴︎ καταδυναστεύσωμεν πένητα δίκαιον μὴ φεισώμεθα χήρας μηδὲ πρεσβύτου ἐντραπῶμεν πολιὰς πολυχρονίους
Opprimamus pauperem justum , et non parcamus viduæ , nec veterani revereamur canos multi temporis :
ወአልቦ ፡ እምውስቴትነ ፡ ዘኢይደልዎ ፡ እምእንቲአነ ፡ ፍስሓ ፡ በኵለሄ ፡ ኢንኅድግ ፡ ወናንብር ፡ ነገረ ፡ ዕበድ ፡ እስመ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ መክፈልትነ ፡ ወዝንቱ ፡ ርስትነ ።
Let us oppress the righteous poor; Let us not spare the widow, Nor reverence the hairs of the old man gray for length of years.
2:11 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἔστω δὲ ἡμῶν ἡ ἰσχὺς νόμος τῆς δικαιοσύνης τὸ γὰρ ἀσθενὲς ἄχρηστον ἐλέγχεται
sit autem fortitudo nostra lex justitiæ ; quod enim infirmum est , inutile invenitur .
ንትዐገል ፡ ነዳየ ፡ ጻድቀ ፡ ወኢንምሐክ ፡ ዕቤረ ፡ ወኢንኅፈር ፡ እምሲባተ ፡ ልሂቅ ፡ ዘብዙኀ ፡ መዋዕል ፡ ወዓመታት ።
But let our strength be to us a law of righteousness; For that which is weak is found to be of no service.
2:12 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐνεδρεύσωμεν τὸν δίκαιον ὅτι δύσχρηστος ἡμῖν ἐστιν καὶ ἐναντιοῦται τοῖς ἔργοις ἡμῶν καὶ ὀνειδίζει ἡμῖν ἁμαρτήματα νόμου καὶ ἐπιφημίζει ἡμῖν ἁμαρτήματα παιδείας ἡμῶν
Circumveniamus ergo justum , quoniam inutilis est nobis , et contrarius est operibus nostris , et improperat nobis peccata legis , et diffamat in nos peccata disciplinæ nostræ .
ወኃይልነ ፡ ይኩነነ ፡ ሕገ ፡ ጽድቅ ፡ እስመ ፡ ሕሊና ፡ ጽቡስ ፡ ምኑነ ፡ ይትበሀል ።
But let us lie in wait for the righteous man, Because he is of disservice to us, And is contrary to our works, And upbraids us with sins against the law, And lays to our charge sins against our discipline.
2:13 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐπαγγέλλεται γνῶσιν ἔχειν θεοῦ καὶ παῖδα κυρίου ἑαυτὸν ὀνομάζει
Promittit se scientiam Dei habere , et filium Dei se nominat .
ንዑ ፡ ንቅትሎ ፡ ለጻድቅ ፡ እስመ ፡ ዕፁብ ፡ ወክቡድ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ለነ ፡ ወይትቃወሞን ፡ ለምግባራቲነ ፡ ወይዘነጒጐነ ፡ በኃጢአ ፡ ሕግ ።
He professes to have knowledge of God, And names himself servant of the Lord.
2:14 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἐγένετο ἡμῖν εἰς ἔλεγχον ἐννοιῶν ἡμῶν βαρύς ἐστιν ἡμῖν καὶ βλεπόμενος
Factus est nobis in traductionem cogitationum nostrarum .
ወይሰብክ ፡ ለነ ፡ አበሳ ፡ ትምህርትነ ፡ ወይብል ፡ አእምሮ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ብየ ፡ ወወልደ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ይሬሲ ፡ ርእሶ ፡ ወኮነነ ፡ መዝለፌ ፡ ሕሊናነ ።
He became to us a reproof of our thoughts.
2:15 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὅτι ἀνόμοιος τοῖς ἄλλοις ὁ βίος αὐτοῦ καὶ ἐξηλλαγμέναι αἱ τρίβοι αὐτοῦ
Gravis est nobis etiam ad videndum , quoniam dissimilis est aliis vita illius , et immutatæ sunt viæ ejus .
ክቡድ ፡ ውእቱ ፡ ብነ ፡ በራእዩኒ ፡ እስመ ፡ ኢይትማሰል ፡ ምስለ ፡ ባዕድ ፡ ንብረቱ ፡ ወፍሉጥ ፡ ፍኖቱ ።
He is grievous to us even to behold, Because his life is unlike other men’s, And his paths are of strange fashion.
2:16 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἰς κίβδηλον ἐλογίσθημεν αὐτῷ καὶ ἀπέχεται τῶν ὁδῶν ἡμῶν ὡς ἀπὸ ἀκαθαρσιῶν μακαρίζει ἔσχατα δικαίων καὶ ἀλαζονεύεται πατέρα θεόν
Tamquam nugaces æstimati sumus ab illo , et abstinet se a viis nostris tamquam ab immunditiis , et præfert novissima justorum , et gloriatur patrem se habere Deum .
ወምኑናነ ፡ ኮነ ፡ በኀቤሁ ፡ ወይርኅቅ ፡ እምፍናዊነ ፡ ከመ ፡ ዘእምርኩስ ፡ ይርኅቅ ፡ ወያስተበዕዕ ፡ ደኀሪቶሙ ፡ ለጻድቃን ፡ ወይትሜካሕ ፡ ከመ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ አቡሁ ።
We were accounted of him as worthless metal, And he abstains from our ways as from uncleannesses. The latter end of the righteous he calls happy; And he vaunts that God is his father.
2:17 ⧉ ⤴︎ ἴδωμεν εἰ οἱ λόγοι αὐτοῦ ἀληθεῖς καὶ πειράσωμεν τὰ ἐν ἐκβάσει αὐτοῦ
Videamus ergo si sermones illius veri sint , et tentemus quæ ventura sunt illi , et sciemus quæ erunt novissima illius .
ንርአይ ፡ ለእመ ፡ ነገሩ ፡ ኮነ ፡ ህልወ ፡ ወናመክር ፡ ዘይከውን ፡ እምርእየቱ ።
Let us see if his words be true, And let us try what shall befall in the ending of his life.
2:18 ⧉ ⤴︎ εἰ γάρ ἐστιν ὁ δίκαιος υἱὸς θεοῦ ἀντιλήμψεται αὐτοῦ καὶ ῥύσεται αὐτὸν ἐκ χειρὸς ἀνθεστηκότων
Si enim est verus filius Dei , suscipiet illum , et liberabit eum de manibus contrariorum .
ወእመሰ ፡ ጻድቅ ፡ ወልዱ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ ያድኅኖ ፡ ወይባልሖ ፡ እምእደ ፡ እለ ፡ ይትቃወምዎ ።
For if the righteous man is God’s son, he will uphold him, And he will deliver him out of the hand of his adversaries.
2:19 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὕβρει καὶ βασάνῳ ἐτάσωμεν αὐτόν ἵνα γνῶμεν τὴν ἐπιείκειαν αὐτοῦ καὶ δοκιμάσωμεν τὴν ἀνεξικακίαν αὐτοῦ
Contumelia et tormento interrogemus eum , ut sciamus reverentiam ejus , et probemus patientiam illius .
በጽእለት ፡ ወበሕማም ፡ ንሕትቶ ፡ ከመ ፡ ናእምር ፡ የዋሀቶ ፡ ወናመክር ፡ ትዕግሥቶ ።
With outrage and torture let us put him to the test, That we may learn his gentleness, And may prove his patience under wrong.
2:20 ⧉ ⤴︎ θανάτῳ ἀσχήμονι καταδικάσωμεν αὐτόν ἔσται γὰρ αὐτοῦ ἐπισκοπὴ ἐκ λόγων αὐτοῦ
Morte turpissima condemnemus eum ; erit enim ei respectus ex sermonibus illius .
ወእኩይ ፡ ወበሞት ፡ ኅሡር ፡ ንኰንኖ ፡ እመ ፡ ይከውኖ ፡ ረድኤተ ፡ በከመ ፡ ቃሉ ።
Let us condemn him to a shameful death; For he will be visited according to his words.
2:21 ⧉ ⤴︎ ταῦτα ἐλογίσαντο καὶ ἐπλανήθησαν ἀπετύφλωσεν γὰρ αὐτοὺς ἡ κακία αὐτῶν
Hæc cogitaverunt , et erraverunt : excæcavit enim illos malitia eorum .
ወዘንተ ፡ ንባበ ፡ ሐለዩ ፡ ወቦቱ ፡ ስሕቱ ፡ እስመ ፡ አንቈረቶሙ ፡ እከዮሙ ።
Thus reasoned they, and they were led astray; For their wickedness blinded them,
2:22 ⧉ ⤴︎ καὶ οὐκ ἔγνωσαν μυστήρια θεοῦ οὐδὲ μισθὸν ἤλπισαν ὁσιότητος οὐδὲ ἔκριναν γέρας ψυχῶν ἀμώμων
Et nescierunt sacramenta Dei : neque mercedem speraverunt justitiæ , nec judicaverunt honorem animarum sanctarum .
ወኢያእመሩ ፡ ኅቡአቲሁ ፡ ለእግዚአብሔር ፡ ወኢተሰፈዉ ፡ ዐስበ ፡ ጻድቅ ።
And they knew not the mysteries of God, Neither hoped they for wages of holiness, Nor did they judge that there is a prize for blameless souls.
2:23 ⧉ ⤴︎ ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἔκτισεν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐπ’ ἀφθαρσίᾳ καὶ εἰκόνα τῆς ἰδίας ἀϊδιότητος ἐποίησεν αὐτόν
Quoniam Deus creavit hominem inexterminabilem , et ad imaginem similitudinis suæ fecit illum .
ወኢፈለጡ ፡ ዕበየ ፡ ክብረ ፡ ነፍሳት ፡ ንጹሐት ፡ እለ ፡ አልቦን ፡ ነውር ፡ እስመ ፡ እግዚአብሔር ፡ ፈጠሮ ፡ ለሰብእ ፡ እንበለ ፡ ሙስና ፡ ወገብሮ ፡ በአርአያ ፡ ዚአሁ ።
Because God created man for incorruption, And made him an image of his own proper being;
2:24 ⧉ ⤴︎ φθόνῳ δὲ διαβόλου θάνατος εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον πειράζουσιν δὲ αὐτὸν οἱ τῆς ἐκείνου μερίδος ὄντες
Invidia autem diaboli mors introivit in orbem terrarum :
ወበቅንአተ ፡ ዲያብሎስ ፡ ሞት ፡ መጽአ ፡ ወቦአ ፡ ውስተ ፡ ዓለም ።
But by the envy of the devil death entered into the world, And those who are of his portion make trial thereof.
