There is the bath of Cornelius the centurion, who used to give many alms. At the third milestone is Mount Sina, where there is a spring in which, if a woman washes, she becomes fruitful. City of Maximianopolis — 17 miles. City of Stradela — 10 miles. There king Ahab dwelt and Elijah prophesied; there is the field where David slew Goliath. City of Scythopolis — 12 miles. Aser, where was the villa of Job — 6 miles. City of Neapolis — 15 miles. There is Mount Gerizim; there the Samaritans say Abraham offered sacrifice, and one ascends to the summit of the mountain by three hundred steps. From there, at the foot of the same mountain, is a place whose name is Shechem.
There is placed the monument where Joseph was laid, in the villa which Jacob his father gave him. From there too was Dinah, daughter of Jacob, carried off by the sons of the Amorites. A thousand paces from there is a place whose name is Sychar, whence came down the Samaritan woman to that same place where Jacob dug the well, to fill water from it; and our Lord Jesus Christ spoke with her there; where there are also plane trees which Jacob planted, and a bath which is fed from that well. From there, 28 miles for those going to Jerusalem, on the left hand is a villa which is called Bethar. A thousand paces from there is the place where Jacob, as he was going into Mesopotamia, fell asleep, and there is an almond tree there, and he saw a vision, and an angel wrestled with him.
There was king Jeroboam, to whom the prophet was sent, that he might turn to the most high God; and the prophet had been commanded not to eat with the false prophet whom the king kept with him; and because he was led astray by the false prophet and ate with him, on his return a lion met the prophet on the way and the lion slew him. From there to Jerusalem ... 12 miles. From Caesarea of Palestine to Jerusalem makes 116 miles in all, 4 change-stations, 4 halting-stations. In Jerusalem there are two great pools at the side of the temple, that is, one on the right, the other on the left, which Solomon made; and further within the city are twin pools, having five porticoes, which are called Bethesda. There the sick of many years used to be healed.
These pools have water troubled in the manner of scarlet. There too is the clay where Solomon used to torment the demons. There is the corner of a very lofty tower, where the Lord went up, and the one who tempted Him said to Him ... And the Lord said to him: 'You shall not tempt the Lord your God, but Him alone shall you serve.' There too is the great cornerstone, of which it was said: 'The stone which the builders rejected, this has been made into the head of the corner.' And beneath the pinnacle of that same tower are many chambers, where Solomon had his palace. There also stands the chamber in which he sat and wrote out wisdom; and that chamber is roofed with a single stone. There are also great cisterns of subterranean water, and pools built with great labour.
And in the building itself, where the temple stood which Solomon built, on the marble before the altar, you would say that the blood of Zachariah was poured out there this very day; even the traces of the nail-prints of the soldiers who killed him appear throughout the whole pavement, so that you would think them fixed as in wax. There are also two statues of Hadrian there, and not far from the statues there is a pierced stone, to which the Jews come every single year and anoint it and lament over themselves with groaning and rend their garments, and so depart. There too is the house of Hezekiah, king of Judah. Likewise, as you go out of Jerusalem to climb up to Zion, on the left side and below in the valley beside the wall is a pool which is called Siloam; it has a four-sided portico; and another great pool outside.
This fountain runs for six days and nights, but on the seventh day, which is the Sabbath, it does not run at all, neither by night nor by day. By the same way one ascends to Zion, and there appears the place where stood the house of Caiaphas the priest, and a column is still there at which they scourged Christ with whips. Within, inside the wall of Zion, appears the place where David had his palace. And of the seven synagogues which were there, only one has remained; the rest, however, are plowed and sown, just as the prophet Isaiah foretold. From there, as you go outside the wall of Zion, traveling toward the Neapolitan Gate, on the right side, down in the valley, are walls where stood the house, or rather the praetorium, of Pontius Pilate; there the Lord was given a hearing before he suffered.
On the left side is the little hill of Golgotha, where the Lord was crucified. From there about a stone's throw is the cave where his body was laid and on the third day he rose again; on that very spot, by the order of the emperor Constantine, a basilica has been built, that is, the Lord's house, of wondrous beauty, having at its side cisterns from which water is drawn, and a bath behind, where infants are washed. Likewise, as one goes from Jerusalem to the gate which faces the east, so as to climb up the Mount of Olives, there is the valley which is called Jehoshaphat; on the left side, where the vineyards are, is also the rock where Judas Iscariot betrayed Christ, and on the right side is the palm tree from which the children took the branches and strewed them when Christ was coming.
Not far from there, about a stone's throw, are two monuments of wondrous beauty: in one is laid the prophet Isaiah, which is truly a single block of stone, and in the other Hezekiah, king of the Jews. From there you go up the Mount of Olives, where the Lord taught the apostles before his passion. There a basilica has been built by order of Constantine. Not far from there is a little hill where the Lord went up to pray, and there Moses and Elijah appeared, when he took Peter and John with him. From there, a thousand five hundred paces eastward, is a village which is called Bethany. There is a crypt there where Lazarus was laid, whom the Lord raised up. Likewise, from Jerusalem to Jericho is eighteen miles.
As one descends the mountain, on the right side behind the monument, is the sycamore tree into which Zacchaeus climbed in order to see Christ. A thousand five hundred paces from the city is the spring of the prophet Elisha. Formerly, if any woman drank of that water, she could bear no children. Beside it is an earthen vessel. Elisha cast salt into it and came and stood over the spring and said: 'Thus says the Lord: I have healed these waters; from now on, if any woman drinks of them, she shall bear children.' Above that same spring is the house of Rahab the harlot, into which the spies entered, and she hid them when Jericho was overthrown, and she alone escaped. There stood the city of Jericho, whose walls the children of Israel encircled with the ark of the covenant, and the walls fell down.
Of it nothing now appears except the place where the ark of the covenant stood and the twelve stones which the children of Israel took up out of the Jordan. There also Joshua the son of Nun circumcised the children of Israel and buried their foreskins. Likewise, from Jericho to the Dead Sea is nine miles. Its water is exceedingly bitter, where there is no fish of any kind at all, nor any ship; and if any man casts himself in to swim, the water itself turns him over. From there to the Jordan, where the Lord was baptized by John, is five miles. There is a place above the river, a little hill on the far bank, where Elijah was caught up into heaven. Likewise, as one goes from Jerusalem to Bethlehem, four miles along the road, on the right side is the monument where Rachel, the wife of Jacob, was laid.
