Here begins the short account of how Jerusalem was built. The city itself is set upon a mountain. In the midst of the city is the basilica of Constantine. At the entrance of that basilica, on the left-hand side, is a chamber where the Cross of the Lord is placed. And thence you enter into the church of Saint Constantine. To the west is a great apse, where the three crosses were found. There above is an altar of silver and pure gold, and nine columns that support that altar and the apse itself. Round about are twelve marble columns [altogether incredible]; upon those columns are twelve silver urns, with which Solomon sealed the demons.
And in the midst of the city is that basilica where the lance is, with which the Lord was pierced, and from it a cross was made, and it shines by night like the sun in the strength of day. And thence you enter into Golgotha. There is a great court there, where the Lord was crucified. Round about, on that very mountain, are silver railings, and on that mountain a kind of flint stone is venerated. It has silver doors, where the Cross of the Lord was set forth, adorned all over with gold and gems, with the sky open above. The railings are richly adorned with gold and silver. There is that dish on which the head of Saint John was carried; there is that horn with which David was anointed, and Solomon; and there too is that ring with which Solomon sealed the demons, and it is of electrum.
There, where Adam was formed; where Abraham offered his son Isaac in sacrifice—on that very spot where the Lord Jesus Christ was crucified. Thence to the west you enter the Holy Resurrection, where is the sepulchre of the Lord, before which lies that stone, a kind of flint. Above it is a church set in a circle. Over that sepulchre is a canopy of silver and gold, and all around is wholly of gold. Before that sepulchre is an altar where holy Zacharias was slain, where his blood grows dry. Then to the sanctuary of the basilica of Saint Constantine, where is a chamber in which are that reed, and that sponge, and that cup which the Lord blessed and gave to his disciples to drink, saying: 'This is my body and my blood.'
Thence you go to that basilica where Jesus found those buying and selling doves, and cast them out. Then you go to the very great basilica of holy Zion, where is that column at which the Lord Jesus was scourged. There appears how he embraced it with his hand, as though he had imprinted it in wax. Thence you come to the sanctuary, where is that stone with which Saint Stephen was stoned. In the middle of the basilica is the crown of thorns which Jesus received. And there is that lamp by which he taught the disciples when he had supped. There is that rod enclosed in a silver column. Thence you go to the house of Caiaphas, where Saint Peter denied. There is the great basilica of Saint Peter. Then you go to the house of Pilate, where he handed over the scourged Lord to the Jews.
There is a great basilica, and there is a chamber where they stripped him and he was scourged, and it is called Holy Wisdom. And thence you come to that pinnacle of the temple, where Satan tempted our Lord Jesus Christ. And there is a basilica set in the form of a cross. And there is a basilica, in the place where the sick used to wash themselves and were healed. And there is the basilica of Saint Mary, and there is her sepulchre. And there Judas betrayed our Lord Jesus Christ. And there is the place where the Lord supped with his disciples. And thence he ascended the Mount of Olives. On the right-hand side is the valley of Jehoshaphat. There the Lord shall judge the just and sinners. And there is a small river, which shall belch forth fire at the consummation of the age.
And there are two basilicas where Christ taught his disciples. And thence you come to Galilee, where the disciples saw the Lord Jesus after he rose from the dead.
