1:936
'For not only do you know the things that appear, but also my hidden thoughts.'
1:937
'Gather them as sheep for the slaughter, and sanctify them for the day of their slaughter.' By 'sanctify' he means 'set apart.'
1:938
因為凡想要使自己成聖的人,就把自己分別出來;
For he who wishes to sanctify himself sets himself apart;
1:939
wherefore also the Syrian has put 'prepare' instead of 'sanctify.'
1:940
'How long shall the land mourn, and all the grass of the field wither, because of the wickedness of those who dwell in the land? Beasts and birds have been destroyed, because they said, God will not see our ways.'
1:941
for they suppose that you do not oversee, nor behold the things ventured by them.
1:942
'Your feet run into wickedness, and they shall weary you.'
1:943
'How will you prepare yourself against horsemen, and are you confident in a land of peace?' This the Syrian thus interpreted:
1:944
'Running with footmen you have been overcome, and how will you be able to withstand horsemen?' And what he means is this:
1:945
「那些鄰近的仇敵——摩押人、亞捫人、以東人和外邦人——都是步行作戰的;
'The neighbouring enemies — Moabites, Ammonites, Idumaeans, and foreigners — waged war on foot;
1:946
'and many times you were overcome when warring against them.'
1:947
他說:「那麼你怎能抵擋列陣騎馬而來的巴比倫人呢?」但按希臘文的解釋則應如此理解:「因你的邪惡所奔跑的道路已使你困乏,剝奪了你的力量;
'How then will you be able,' he says, 'to withstand the Babylonians drawn up in battle upon horses?' But according to the Greek interpretation it should be understood thus: 'Because the course you ran through your wickedness has enfeebled you, and stripped you of strength;
1:948
'and being deprived of vigour and strength, how will you be able to withstand and draw up in battle against those who campaign with a multitude of horses?' Both meanings I have set down, presenting to the readers the choice of the better.
1:949
'How will you do in the swelling of the Jordan?' The Syrian said it thus:
1:950
「約但河氾濫的時候,你怎能渡過呢?」他以比喻的方式,把仇敵軍兵的眾多稱為氾濫的河流;
'How will you cross the Jordan when it floods?' And figuratively he called the multitude of the army of the enemies a flooding river;
1:951
他又提醒他們嫩的兒子約書亞時代所發生的事;
and he reminded them also of the things in the days of Joshua son of Nun;
1:952
that 'When I cared for you, you crossed that river when it was in flood.'
1:953
「因為連你父的家和這些人都以詭詐待你,他們也在你身後追喊;
'For even the house of your father, and these have dealt treacherously with you, and they too have cried out after you from behind;
1:954
'and these very ones have gathered together against you.'
1:955
For many, as is likely, even from the ten tribes, of those already made captives, were campaigning together with the enemies.
1:956
'Do not believe them, though they speak fair words to you.' Such was Rabshakeh, who used the Hebrew tongue and blasphemed against God.
1:957
「我離棄了我的殿宇;
'I have forsaken my house;
1:958
「我撇下了我的產業;
'I have abandoned my inheritance;
1:959
'I have given the beloved of my soul into the hands of her enemies.'
1:960
He displays his own goodness, and, exposing their abomination, teaches:
1:961
因為祂用滿有慈愛的話語,甚至稱那與祂為敵的為祂心所愛的;
for he himself uses loving words, and calls his enemy the beloved of his soul;
1:962
然而她所行的,卻是仇敵與陰謀者的作為;
but she works the deeds of foes and plotters;
1:963
'My inheritance has become to me as a lion in the forest.'
1:964
For instead of a bride she became a wild beast, and devoured the bridegroom.
1:965
「她發聲攻擊我。」諸福音書教導我們這預言的真確性;
'She has uttered her voice against me.' The Gospels teach the truth of this prophecy;
1:966
「我的產業對我豈是鬣狗的洞穴嗎?或是四圍有洞穴環繞嗎?」在前面所解釋的經文中,他因那些在殿中供職之人的違法,稱聖殿為賊窩;
'Is my inheritance to me a hyena's cave? Or a cave round about her?' In the passages previously interpreted, he named the temple a den of robbers, because of the transgression of those who ministered in it;
1:967
但這裡他所說的「鬣狗的洞穴」,不僅是指那城,也指城四圍的地方,就是猶太全地;
but here by 'hyena's cave' he calls not only the city, but also the regions round about it, that is to say, Judaea;
1:968
and again he accuses the transgression committed against him.
1:969
'For to me,' he says, 'it has become a hyena's cave.'
1:970
Then he foretells her final destruction.
1:971
'Go, gather against her all the beasts of the field, and let them come to devour her.' For the Romans, having received dominion over the inhabited world, and having gathered an army from various nations, slaughtered some, and led others away as prisoners of war.
1:972
And he says that the teachers of the law were the cause of the impiety:
1:973
「許多牧人毀壞了我的葡萄園;
'Many shepherds have destroyed my vineyard;
1:974
'they have given the portion of my desire into a desolate wilderness.'
1:975
'It has become a ruin of destruction.'
1:976
And this he teaches more clearly:
1:977
在那時,他們的地在仇敵手中變為荒涼;
at that time their land became desolate at the hands of the enemies;
1:978
but now they have been utterly deprived of their far-famed mother-city.
1:979
'Because there is no man laying it to heart.' That is, they do not use godly reasonings.
1:980
'Upon every path of the wilderness the destroyers have come, having brought misery in the wilderness.'
1:981
The Syriac rendered 'the pass' as 'a footpath.'
1:982
They filled, he says, the whole wilderness with footpaths, being wretched and fleeing from their enemies; for it is characteristic of fugitives not to make use of the accustomed roads.
1:983
For it is proper to those who flee not to make use of the customary roads.
1:984
For the sword of the Lord shall devour from one end of the land to the other end of the land; there is no peace for any flesh.
1:985
He speaks both of the things that befell the Jews—'from one end of the land to the other end' of the land of Israel—
1:986
and he foretells also the things brought upon the nations at various times,
1:987
against whom he prophesies also near the end of the prophecy.
1:988
You have sown wheat, and you shall reap thorns.
1:989
他吩咐他們不要倚靠地土的豐收,而要倚靠在地上的義行;
He charges them not to take confidence in the fruitfulness of the land, but in the righteous conduct of the land;
1:990
for the one who practices wickedness harvests thorns from it.
1:991
Your lots shall not profit you. Again he called good fortune 'lots,' in which he counsels them not to place their trust.
1:992
You have been put to shame because of your boasting, because of reproach before God. The things you suppose glorify you—namely, wealth and power—these, when you are judged before God, shall fill you with shame.
1:993
For having enjoyed the gifts from him, you have requited him with the opposite.
1:994
Thus says the Lord concerning all the evil neighbors, the shepherds who touch my inheritance, which I apportioned to my people Israel.
1:995
以東人、摩押人、亞捫人和非利士人,一向對猶太人懷著仇恨與敵意;
The Idumeans, Moabites, Ammonites, and Philistines were always disposed with hatred and hostility toward the Jews;
1:996
accordingly they rejoiced when they beheld the calamities brought upon them.
1:997
Therefore he forewarns them of the coming restoration of the Jews.
1:998
By 'shepherds' he means their rulers.
1:999
Behold, I will pluck them up from their land, and I will cast out the house of Judah from among them.
1:1000
(15) And it shall come to pass, after I have cast them out, I will return and have mercy on them, and I will settle them again, each in his own inheritance and each in his own land.
1:1001
And it shall be, if they diligently teach my people my way, to swear by my name, 'As the Lord lives,' just as they taught my people to swear by Baal, then they shall be built up in the midst of my people.
1:1002
But if they do not turn back, I will utterly remove that nation with removal and destruction, says the Lord.
1:1003
He spoke also of the complete rejection of the nation of the Jews.
1:1004
For I will remove that nation with removal and destruction, says the Lord. CHAPTER 13
1:1005
After this the prophet is commanded to buy a linen loincloth, and having put it about his loins, to hide it away by the river Euphrates; and he immediately fulfilled the command.
1:1006
過了許多日子,他又奉命去取那腰帶;
When very many days had passed, he was again ordered to fetch the loincloth;
1:1007
and taking it in his hands, he found it ruined and useless for any use.
1:1008
Thus will I ruin the pride of Judah and the pride of Jerusalem, this great pride.
1:1009
This wicked people,
1:1010
who are unwilling to obey my words, and walk in the crookedness of their evil heart, and go after other gods to serve them and to worship them;
1:1011
and they shall become like this loincloth, which shall no longer be of use for anything.
1:1012
那腰帶奉命藏在幼發拉底河邊、磐石的裂縫中;
The loincloth was ordered to be hidden by the Euphrates, in the cleft of the rock;
1:1013
他所說「磐石的裂縫」,是指巴比倫;
and by 'the cleft of the rock' he means Babylon;
1:1014
百姓在那裡毫無用處,不再稱為神的子民,不再自主治理,也不能舉行律法所定的敬拜;
and being there, the people were useless, no longer called God's people, nor governing themselves, nor performing the services according to the Law;
1:1015
but they were useless, like that ruined loincloth.
1:1016
For just as the loincloth cleaves to a man's loins, so I made the house of Israel and all the house of Judah cleave to myself, says the Lord, that they might become for me a renowned people, a boast, and a glory;
1:1017
By these words he showed the surpassing measure of his goodness, and taught the manner of the union, and that he indeed willed to make them illustrious and admired, but they by their transgression drew upon themselves reproaches.
1:1018
Thus, having made the prophecy also through these deeds, he again foretells the things to come through another image.
1:1019
Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel:
1:1020
Every wineskin shall be filled with wine.
1:1021
And it shall be, if they say to you, 'Do we not surely know that every wineskin shall be filled with wine?' then you shall say to them:
1:1022
The prophets and the priests, and all the people, with drunkenness.
1:1023
And teaching what the drunkenness is, he added:
1:1024
And I will scatter them, a man and his brother,
1:1025
and his fathers and his sons together, says the Lord.
1:1026
And showing the unchangeableness of his wrath, he added:
1:1027
「我必不顧惜、不憐憫、不施慈心,以致不毀滅他們」——意思是說,不阻止他們的毀滅。這樣,他把刑罰稱為「醉酒」;
I will not yearn over them, nor spare, nor have compassion, so as to withhold their destruction—that is, so as to prevent their destruction. Thus he called the punishment 'drunkenness';
1:1028
for those who fall into the greatest calamities resemble people stupefied, being unable, on account of the excess of their suffering, even to lament.
1:1029
Hear, and give ear, and do not be lifted up.
1:1030
要停止你們的放肆和瘋狂的自誇;
Cease from your insolence and your frenzied arrogance;
1:1031
receive the things spoken as from God.
1:1032
Anticipate, he says, the time of punishment.
1:1033
This the divine Apostle also urges:
1:1034
'So then, as we have opportunity, let us work what is good.'—And you shall wait for light, and there is the shadow of death, and you shall be placed in darkness. For in the very time of punishment, though you plead, you shall not obtain any mercy.
1:1035
And if you do not hear, your soul shall weep in secret because of pride;
1:1036
and weeping it shall weep, and your eyes shall stream down tears, because the flock of the Lord is crushed.
1:1037
「暗暗哭泣」這話暗示禍患的極其嚴重;
The phrase 'shall weep in secret' hints at the excess of the evils;
1:1038
for being enslaved to your enemies, you will not even dare to weep openly, but will do this secretly.
1:1039
他又勸勉君王和首領為境遇的變遷哀哭;
He also exhorts the king and the rulers to lament the changes of their circumstances;
1:1040
and he reminds them also of the things already come to pass.
1:1041
The cities toward the south were shut up, and there was none to open them.
1:1042
Judah was carried away captive, he accomplished a complete deportation.
1:1043
因為西拿基立擄掠了猶大許多城邑;
For Sennacherib enslaved many cities of Judea;
1:1044
and these things, he says, they endured, paying the penalty for the wrongs they had committed.
1:1045
He also bids Jerusalem behold the multitude of the enemies coming from the north, and he adds:
1:1046
Where is the flock that was given to you, the sheep of your glory? That is, the multitude of the inhabitants.
1:1047
What will you say when they visit you? That is, the enemies.
1:1048
And you taught them, to your own hurt, lessons for your rule. For being warred upon by the Syrians, they called the Assyrians into alliance, when they ought to have sought the providence of God.
1:1049
Pangs shall seize you, like a woman in labor. He showed the greatness of the anguish.
1:1050
And if you say in your heart:
1:1051
The multitude of thine iniquity is uncovered, thy hinder parts, so that thy heels may be made a public example.
1:1052
Such a stripping bare covers with shame those who must endure it.
1:1053
He says therefore: Was it not that thou wast stripped naked—that is, thy transgressions—that brought forth for thee these calamities also? Verse 23.
1:1054
'If the Ethiopian will change his skin, and the leopard her spots, then may ye also be able to do good, having learned to do evil.'
1:1055
True, then, is the saying that habit is second nature.
1:1056
For by long custom he compared their deliberate dispositions with those things that are natural.
1:1057
For this cause He threatens to scatter them like stubble, whirled hither and thither by the tempest.
1:1058
祂也提到她眾多的罪——放蕩、狂傲,以及對偶像的敬拜;
He speaks also of the multitude of her sins—licentiousness, and insolence, and the worship of idols;
1:1059
for He calls it the estrangement of her fornication.
1:1060
'Upon the hills, and in the fields have I seen thine abominations.' Then in a mournful strain: 'Woe unto thee, O Jerusalem, for thou wast not cleansed to follow after Me!'
1:1061
還要到幾時呢?因為你既膽敢犯下許多不法之事,卻不肯運用悔改;
How much longer yet? For having dared to commit many transgressions, thou wast unwilling to make use of repentance;
1:1062
but I will no longer be longsuffering.
1:1063
因此,按照神聖的律法來安排生活乃是上策;
It is better, then, to order one's life according to the divine laws;
1:1064
but since we are men, and it is likely that we should stumble, it is fitting to make use of the remedies of repentance, and through these to propitiate the Judge, and to escape the experience of the punishments that have been threatened.
1:1065
Of which may we also remain untouched, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father be glory and might, together with the all-holy Spirit, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
1:1066
And the word of the Lord came unto Jeremiah concerning the drought.
1:1067
He brings upon them chastisements of every kind, that He may check the course of their wickedness.
1:1068
因為祂說泉源、水井,以及那由雨水匯聚的水池都已枯竭;
For He says that both the springs, and the wells, and the reservoirs formed by the rains have failed;
1:1069
and there followed also the barrenness of the earth, and the cattle—not only the tame, but also the wild—partook of the suffering.
1:1070
'For the hinds,' He says, 'calved in the field, and forsook their young, because there was no grass.'
1:1071
'The wild asses stood upon the wooded glens, they snuffed up the wind like a dragon.'
1:1072
And this too men do when thirsty, cooling their heat with the breezes of the winds.
1:1073
Then the prophet offers supplication, and makes mention of the common sins, and by this propitiates God.
1:1074
ηʹ
'For against Thee,' he says, 'have we sinned.' Verse 8.
1:1075
'O hope of Israel, Thou savest in the time of evils.'
1:1076
For from Thee do we all await mercy.
1:1077
'Why hast Thou become as a sojourner upon the earth, and as one native-born turning aside to a lodging?' The phrase 'as one native-born,' the Syrian rendered 'as a wayfarer.'
1:1078
'Why ever,' he says, 'dost Thou overlook us, and seem like a sojourner who despises dwellings as belonging to others, in which he lodges, and like a wayfarer passing by, who takes no care for the things along the road?' Verse 9.
1:1079
'Be not as a man asleep, and as a man that cannot save.' For neither does the sleeper hear those who call upon him, and he who is yoked to weakness cannot come to the rescue.
1:1080
for Thou both art able, and art awake, and art everywhere present, and standest by all.
1:1081
「耶和華啊,你在我們中間,我們也稱為你名下的人;
'And Thou art in the midst of us, O Lord, and Thy name is called upon us;
1:1082
forget us not.' He sets down also the answer given by God:
1:1083
'They loved to move their feet, and spared them not.'
1:1084
這就是說,走向罪惡的道路;
That is, into the way of wickedness;
1:1085
for this also the words that follow teach.
1:1086
'And God took no pleasure in them.' He says that He will make remembrance of their iniquities, and will exact from them penalties for the impieties they committed.
1:1087
And He declares that He will neither give heed to their fasting, nor accept the sacrifices offered by them, but will deliver them over to famine and pestilence and slaughter.
1:1088
Having heard these things, the prophet brings forward the predictions of the false prophets, and says that they foretell the contrary, and promise them peace, and abundance of good things.
1:1089
祂說:「我並沒有吩咐他們,也沒有對他們說話,這些人竟向你們預言虛假的異象、占卜、觀兆,以及他們自己心中所擇的意念。」祂稱夢為「異象」,稱觀鳥占卜為「觀兆」;
'For I commanded them not,' He says, 'neither spake I unto them, that these prophesy unto you false visions, and divinations, and auguries, and the choosings of their own heart.' By 'visions' He calls dreams, and by 'auguries' the observation of birds;
1:1090
又稱那些藉著鬼魔運作而成的事為「占卜」;
and by 'divinations' those things wrought by the working of demons;
1:1091
and by 'the choosings of the heart,' the deceit arising from their own reasonings.
1:1092
Then to these very ones He threatens both death from sickness, and slaughter in war.
1:1093
'For by a diseased death,' He says, 'shall they die, and by sword and famine shall they be brought to their end.' And along with these, also those who followed their words.
1:1094
And they shall not be deemed worthy even of burial, all alike falling into the same evils.
1:1095
But again the lover of mankind, having foretold the gloomy things, exhorts them to make use of the remedies of repentance.
1:1096
'For bring down,' He says, 'tears in your eyes day and night, because of the greatness of the evils that shall be brought upon you.'
1:1097
「我若出到田野,就見那些被刀劍所殺的;
'If I go forth into the plain, then behold the slain by the sword;
1:1098
and if I enter into the city, behold the anguish of famine.'
1:1099
He adds to these also the evils of captivity.
1:1100
For God, taking forethought for those unholy men, sent along also prophets, as it were certain overseers of children and teachers, that they might not utterly turn aside into impiety.
1:1101
先知敘述了這些事,便把話轉向神;
Having narrated these things, the prophet turns his words toward God;
1:1102
「你全然棄絕了猶大嗎?或是你的心厭離了錫安嗎?」意即,你的眷顧;
'Hast Thou utterly rejected Judah? or hath Thy soul departed from Zion?' Meaning, Thy providence;
1:1103
for in human fashion he has placed 'soul,' for a clearer expression of the prophecy.
1:1104
And he says that the blow inflicted is incurable, and adds, speaking thus: Verses 20, 21.
1:1105
「耶和華啊,我們承認自己的罪,並我們列祖的罪孽;
'We know, O Lord, our sins, the iniquities of our fathers;
1:1106
for we have sinned before Thee.'
1:1107
'And look not upon us, but upon Thy name.'
1:1108
For we are called Thy people.
1:1109
「求你不要毀壞你榮耀的寶座。」他這樣稱呼耶路撒冷;
'Destroy not the throne of Thy glory.' Thus he named Jerusalem;
1:1110
and the Lord in the sacred Gospels, when forbidding oaths, said, 'Neither swear by Jerusalem, for it is the throne of the great King'; for there did He make His own manifestation.
1:1111
他又題起與列祖所立的約,並說偶像絲毫不能施予幫助;
And he calls to mind also the covenant made with the fathers, and that from the idols there is no help;
1:1112
唯有祂親自供應那從上而降的雨;
but He Himself supplies the rain that is borne down from above;
1:1113
因為受造之物並非無人掌管;
for the creation is not without a governor;
1:1114
'And the heaven shall give its fulness.'
1:1115
'Art not Thou Thyself He, O Lord? and we will wait upon Thee; for Thou hast made all these things.'
1:1116
祂說:不要以為我藐視你,不接納你的代求;
For think not, He says, that despising thee I receive not thine embassy;
1:1117
for neither would I have yielded to those entreating, who wrought so many wonders.
1:1118
然而祂題起這些人,既因他們是長者,又因他們曾多次為百姓向祂懇求得蒙應允;
Yet these He called to mind, both as elders, and as having often prevailed upon Him on behalf of the people;
1:1119
and indeed Samuel too did this same thing, and brought down abundant rain in the season of summer.
1:1120
Then He bids the prophet dismiss the people that stood by.
1:1121
But if they say to you, he says, 'Where shall we go forth?', you shall say to them: Thus says the Lord:
1:1122
定歸於死亡的,必歸死亡;
Those destined for death, to death;
1:1123
定歸於刀劍的,必歸刀劍;
and those destined for the sword, to the sword;
1:1124
定歸於饑荒的,必歸饑荒;
and those destined for famine, to famine;
1:1125
and those destined for captivity, to captivity.
1:1126
For to these four calamities shall I subject them.
1:1127
And besides these, those who have died shall become food for wild beasts and birds of prey.
1:1128
And I shall hand them over to distresses among all the kingdoms of the earth.
1:1129
He foretells also the things that would come to pass after the return, and the things that would befall them under the Macedonians, and the utter destruction that would be brought upon them by the Romans.
1:1130
然而他教導說,這頭一批的事,乃是因瑪拿西所行的不敬虔之惡而臨到的;
Yet he teaches that these first things came to pass on account of the impiety perpetrated by Manasseh;
1:1131
but the Judge is not unjust, nor does he exact penalties for another's account; rather, as those who had shared in the impiety and had eagerly cooperated with the wicked king, he subjects them to the aforesaid evils.
1:1132
Who shall spare you, O Jerusalem? and who shall be afraid for you? or who shall turn aside to ask after your welfare? That is to say: In the eyes of all men you shall seem to have suffered justly.
1:1133
For men are wont, whenever they see one who lives in extreme wickedness being punished, not only to feel no pain along with him, but even to rejoice together with those who had been wronged, as being now delivered from that man's wickedness.
1:1134
耶和華說:你離棄了我;
You have turned away from me, says the Lord;
1:1135
and the phrase 'you shall go backward' he has set down in the sense of 'you shall be humbled.'
1:1136
And I will stretch out my hand against you, and destroy you, and I will no longer spare them. For I will no longer employ my former forbearance.
1:1137
Then, teaching that he is compelled to chastise against his own inclination, he speaks as one grieving along with them:
1:1138
在我百姓的城門口,他們喪失了兒女;
In the gates of my people they were bereaved of children;
1:1139
I destroyed my people through their own wickedness, and they did not turn back. They themselves drew down destruction upon themselves, being unwilling to cease from their wickedness.
1:1140
He says that, because of the slaying of the men, the widows too were multiplied, and again for the same reason the mothers were deprived of their children.
1:1141
他說:我使少年人的母親在正午遭遇苦難;
For I brought, he says, upon the mother of the young men misery at midday;
1:1142
I cast upon her suddenly trembling and haste. (9)
1:1143
She that bore seven is grown faint; her soul has fainted away.
1:1144
太陽在她正午之時就落下了。因為對哀傷的人而言,連光明也稱為黑暗;
The sun went down upon her while it was yet midday. For to those who mourn, even the light is called darkness;
1:1145
having said these things and others like them, the prophet laments and wails:
1:1146
我的母親哪,我有禍了,你為何生我作一個在全地被爭訟、被論斷的人;
Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me as a man who is judged and contended with in all the earth;
1:1147
我未曾使人得益,也無人使我得益;
I have not profited, nor has anyone profited me;
1:1148
my strength has failed among those who curse me.
1:1149
敘利亞譯本把「我曾得益」翻譯為「我曾欠債」;
The Syriac rendered 'I have profited' as 'I have owed';
1:1150
因此他說:我既未曾欠債,也未曾放債;
so then he says: I have neither owed anything, nor lent anything;
1:1151
and yet I have gained many enemies, who continually revile and curse me.
1:1152
For counsels, for the most part, are wont to give birth to disobedience.
1:1153
然而,按照希臘文譯本,當如此理解:我是配得哀歌的,因為我被徒然帶入這一生;
According to the Greek rendering, however, it is to be understood thus: I am worthy of lamentations, having been brought into this life to no purpose;
1:1154
因為我既未曾使任何人得益,也未曾從他人領受任何益處;
for neither did I benefit anyone, nor did I receive any benefit from others;
1:1155
but I receive only curses from those who hear my prophecies.
1:1156
Let it come to pass, O Lord, in their prospering, if I did not stand before you in the time of their evils, and in the time of their affliction, for good against the enemy.
1:1157
他說:求你聽他們如何咒詛我;
Hear them, he says, cursing me;
1:1158
many times I offered up to you my supplications on their behalf.
1:1159
Then again in the person of God:
1:1160
Shall iron be known, and a covering of bronze?
1:1161
Your strength and your treasures I will give for plunder, as a recompense for all your sins throughout all your borders.
1:1162
用遮蓋物,而非鐵製的;
with coverings, not with iron ones;
1:1163
for all your wealth I will hand over to your foes, and this shall be the requital of your sins.
1:1164
And to these he adds also the captivity that had come upon them.
1:1165
Having foretold these things, the prophet endures peril from those who could not bear to listen, who attempted to kill him, and he calls upon the God of all and says:
1:1166
Remember me, O Lord, and visit me, and acquit me of those who pursue me.
1:1167
求你不要把我交給那些逼迫我的人;
Do not deliver me to those who pursue me;
1:1168
Do not take me in your longsuffering. It bears the sense: 'you press me hard';
1:1169
that is: by exercising forbearance and deferring the punishment of the wrongdoers, you grieve us who are being wronged.
1:1170
Know that I have borne reproach for your sake. (16)
1:1171
By those who reject your words.
1:1172
for in conveying your words I became hateful to them.
1:1173
Bring them to an end, and your word shall be to me for gladness and for joy of my heart, because your name is called upon me. Since they suppose that I foretell falsely, and give heed to the promises of the false prophets as if they were true, confirm my words by the deeds, and thereby comfort my soul.
1:1174
接著他說,他既未與他們同席,也未與他們同歡笑,而是將對神的敬畏看得高於一切;
Then he says that he shared with them neither table nor laughter, but esteemed the fear of God above all things;
1:1175
and both on account of their wickedness and on account of the punishment, he continued in grief.
1:1176
你若回轉,我也必復興你,使你站立在我面前;
If you turn back, then I will also restore you; you shall stand before my face;
1:1177
and if you bring forth the precious from the worthless, you shall be as my mouth.
1:1178
他說:你若擔起這勞苦,我為你所存留的賞賜必不微小;
Not small, he says, is the reward laid up for you by me, if you take up this labor;
1:1179
for if you turn back any of those who go astray, you shall partake of great boldness before me.
1:1180
因為這就是「你必站立在我面前」的意思。並且,你若使任何一個不虔的人改變,勸他們揀選那更美的道路,你就必被比作我的口;
For this is the meaning of 'you shall stand before my face.' And if you change any of the ungodly, and persuade them to choose the better course, you shall be likened to my mouth;
1:1181
for I too by a word made the things that are, and you too by a word may transform the workers of wickedness into virtue.
1:1182
And he promised him again invincibility and unconquerableness, and reminded him of the promises made from the beginning.
1:1183
He charges him not to marry, nor to beget children, since both those who bear and those who are born would be given over to famine and pestilence, to slaughter and to slavery.
1:1184
He exhorts him neither to rejoice with those who rejoice, nor to grieve with those who grieve.
1:1185
For I have withdrawn, he says, my peace from this people, says the Lord, and my mercy, and my compassions. (6)
1:1186
And great and small shall die in this land.
1:1187
他說,他們甚至不得埋葬,也無人按常例為他們舉哀,哀悼的人也得不著任何安慰;
He says that they shall not even be deemed worthy of burial, nor shall the customary laments be made over them, nor shall the mourners be deemed worthy of any consolation;
1:1188
and he threatens the city with the deprivation of every kind of gladness, so that not a single sound shall be raised—neither of weddings, nor of banquets, nor of the other things that make life pleasant to men.
1:1189
And when they inquire, he says, and say:
1:1190
I will cast you away from this land into a land which you did not know, neither you nor your fathers, and there you shall serve other gods day and night, who shall show you no mercy.
1:1191
Since you love gods that have no existence, I will cast you out of the land of your fathers, and hand you over to your enemies, so that together with them you may be enslaved to error.
1:1192
Yet He also promises their return.
1:1193
In extolling God they will sing His praises, and they will no longer recount their deliverance from the bondage of the Egyptians, but all will marvel at the return from Babylon.
1:1194
主說:看哪,我要差遣許多打魚的來,他們必把他們如魚般打上來;
Behold, I will send many fishermen, says the Lord, and they shall fish for them;
1:1195
and after these things I will send many hunters, and they shall hunt them upon every hill and out of the clefts of the rocks.
1:1196
By these words He has shown that the punishment is inescapable, namely, that the enemies, imitating fishermen and hunters, will net them all as with a seine, bringing under their power even those who try to hide themselves in the mountains.
1:1197
For My eyes are upon all their ways; they were not hidden from My face, nor were their iniquities concealed from before My eyes.
1:1198
I behold all things; nothing of what takes place escapes Me.
1:1199
And I will first recompense to them double their iniquities and their lawless deeds, wherewith they have profaned My land with the carcasses of their abominations.
1:1200
祂因愛世人,故將刑罰稱為罪的加倍;
As one who loves mankind, He calls the punishment double the sins;
1:1201
for according to the reckoning of what is just, they did not pay penalties worthy of their deeds.
1:1202
And by 'the carcasses of the abominations' He means the slaughter of their sons and daughters, which they used to offer to the idols.
1:1203
Having thus exposed the impiety of the people, He foretells the conversion of the nations.
1:1204
主啊,你是我的力量,是我的幫助,是我在患難之日的避難所;
O Lord, my strength and my help and my refuge in the day of evils;
1:1205
unto Thee the nations shall come from the ends of the earth, and shall say, How false were the idols our fathers acquired, and there is no profit in them.
1:1206
那些蒙受如此大眷顧、又得享律法與先知教訓的人,卻始終行不敬虔、犯法之事;
Those who had been deemed worthy of such great care, and had enjoyed the instruction both of the Law and of the prophets, persisted in impiety and in transgression;
1:1207
but the nations, who had not enjoyed this providential care, and had merely heard the apostolic preaching, fled from error and drew near to the light of the knowledge of God.
1:1208
And, calling to mind the former proverb, I cry out to Thee:
1:1209
I foretell to them, He says, long beforehand the things that shall come to pass, and I teach them beforehand of My power, that through mean and few men I will accomplish their transformation.
1:1210
Having thus foretold the conversion of the nations, He again arraigns the impiety of the Jews.
1:1211
The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron, with an adamantine point, engraved upon the breast of their heart and upon the horns of their altars.
1:1212
沒有什麼比良心更為堅強有力;
Nothing is stronger than the conscience;
1:1213
因為刻印在其上的字句是牢固不移的;
for the letters imprinted upon it are fixed and firm;
1:1214
for even if all men should bear good witness to their conscience, the conscience of liars does not endure their wickedness, but is pricked and stung, and delivers an incorruptible verdict.
1:1215
This too He says here, that both your deeds accuse you, and your conscience bears witness together against you.
1:1216
He reminds them also of the groves and the altars, and of the error committed in them, and threatens to hand over all their wealth together with their idols to the enemies.
1:1217
祂又預言那城的荒涼;
He foretells also the desolation of the city;
1:1218
此後祂稱那離棄神、卻倚靠人間權勢的人為可憐的,實在是三重可憐,並使他伏在咒詛之下;
and after this He calls wretched, indeed thrice wretched, and subjects to curses the man who departs from God but puts his confidence in human power;
1:1219
and He likens such a one to certain barren and worthless plants that grow in the wilderness and receive no care.
