1:164
我必打碎銅門,砍斷鐵閂,並為你開啟那黑暗中隱藏、不可見的財寶。居魯士既得知這些事,便將回歸故土的恩准賜給那些願意的猶太人;
I will shatter gates of bronze, and break in pieces bars of iron, and I will open for you treasures of darkness, hidden and unseen. Having learned these things, Cyrus granted to those of the Jews who so wished the return to their native land;
1:165
and the book of Chronicles too teaches us the time.
1:166
For it says: In the first year of Cyrus, king of the Persians, after the word of the Lord by the mouth of Jeremiah was fulfilled, the Lord stirred up the spirit of Cyrus, king of the Persians, and Cyrus gave command to proclaim throughout all his kingdom, in the words of Scripture, saying:
1:167
Thus says Cyrus the king of the Persians:
1:168
All the kingdoms of the earth the Lord God of heaven has given me, and He Himself has charged me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judea;
1:169
to Him be the glory unto the ages of ages.
1:170
In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, he dreamed a dream, and his spirit was troubled, and his sleep departed from him. From this we learn that immediately, at the very outset of his reign, he marched against Judea in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, and commanded the one to pay tribute, while the others he took as captives and carried off into the land of the Assyrians.
1:171
The prophet Jeremiah also bears witness to these times, speaking thus:
1:172
「猶大王約西亞的兒子約雅敬第四年,就是巴比倫王尼布甲尼撒元年,臨到先知耶利米、論及猶大眾民的話。」由此我們得知:當約雅敬在位第三年將滿之時,尼布甲尼撒已登基作王,發動了攻打猶太人的征伐;
The word that came to Jeremiah the prophet, concerning all the people of Judah, in the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah, this being the first year of Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon. We therefore find here that, when the third year of Jehoiakim's reign was being completed, Nebuchadnezzar, having become king, made his expedition against the Jews;
1:173
and at the beginning of the fourth year, the prophet Jeremiah, offering exhortation to the people, said that this was the first year of king Nebuchadnezzar.
1:174
Having said that the first captivity took place in the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, he now added:
1:175
In the second year of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar he dreamed a dream. These things he added not idly, but so that we might learn the time precisely.
1:176
For this reason the divine prophets also, when they make mention of the kings, record as well the number of the years.
1:177
In the second year, then, of the reign of Nebuchadnezzar, he dreamed a dream, and his spirit was troubled, and sleep departed from him.
1:178
( βʹ.)
(第二節)「王吩咐人召那些術士、法師、行邪術的和迦勒底人來,要他們將王的夢告訴王。」神的安排對明智的人而言是顯然的;
(Chapter 2.) And the king commanded to call the enchanters, and the magicians, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, to declare to the king his dream. Now the dispensation of God is plain to the prudent;
1:179
for wishing to make His own prophet known by means of the dream, so that from this the king might receive good and saving admonitions, He alarmed him indeed by the dream, but took away the memory of the dream.
1:180
But just as the forethought of the God of all is plain, so also the madness of the king is well known to all the pious.
1:181
For how is it not the height of derangement to seek from others the memory of the dream? Yet nonetheless, being summoned, he says, they came and stood before the king. (Verses 3, 4.)
1:182
And the king said to them:
1:183
I have dreamed a dream, and my spirit is troubled to know the dream.
1:184
And the Chaldeans spoke to the king in Aramaic, and said:
1:185
O king, live forever;
1:186
「請王將夢告訴僕人,我們就把夢的講解說明。」他們所求的固然合理;
tell the dream to your servants, and we will declare its interpretation. And their request they made indeed fitting;
1:187
他們的應許卻是狂妄的;
but their promise was arrogant;
1:188
for it was not of human understanding to interpret divine revelations apart from the cooperation from on high.
1:189
The Chaldeans conducted the discourse in Aramaic, inasmuch as they had been gathered from various nations and each possessed his own tongue, yet all in common employed the language of the Syrians—wishing to teach what would follow fittingly upon the answer.
1:190
But not even so did they persuade the boastful king not to demand of men things beyond nature.
1:191
For the king answered at once, and said to the Chaldeans:
1:192
if therefore you do not make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall be destroyed, and your houses shall be plundered.
1:193
But if you make known to me the dream and its interpretation, you shall receive from me gifts and rewards and great honor;
1:194
「只是要把夢和夢的講解告訴我。」這些話不僅顯出他的凶暴與獸性,也顯出他極度的愚昧;
only declare to me the dream and its interpretation. Now these words display not only his savagery and brutishness, but also his exceeding folly;
1:195
for it is the height of senselessness to suppose that either by the threat of evils or by the promise of goods, greater knowledge would be engendered in the Chaldeans.
1:196
(ζʹ.)
(Verse 7.) At once, then, those men said to him:
1:197
「請王將夢告訴僕人,我們就把講解說明。」他們說:我們固然承認自己是奴僕,但我們也曉得自己的本性;
Tell your dream to your servants, and we will declare its interpretation. For we confess our servitude, he says, but we also know our nature;
1:198
and we shall be able to interpret the dream, if we should learn it; but to tell the dream itself—which was made known to you and then delivered over to forgetfulness—we cannot.
1:199
But nonetheless the foolish king pressed on, seeking the recollection of the dream.
1:200
For the king answered, he says, and said:
1:201
In truth I know that you are buying time, since you have seen that the matter has departed from me.
1:202
(θʹ.)
(Verse 9.) If therefore you do not declare to me the dream, there is but one decree for you; and I know that you have agreed together to speak a lying and corrupt word before me, until the time should pass;
1:203
「你們把夢告訴我,我就知道你們能把夢的講解說明。」這些話中,那要求是任性而癲狂的,那指控卻是極為確實的;
tell me the dream, and I shall know that you will declare to me its interpretation. Now of these words, the demand is willful and mad, but the accusation is exceedingly true;
1:204
For you wish, he says, to learn the dream, so that having in common fabricated some false interpretation, you may deceive me as is your custom, taking the length of time as your accomplice and awaiting the season of the outcome.
1:205
Having heard these things, the Chaldeans (for, as it seems, these had greater freedom of speech with him than the rest) thereupon speak decisively, and utterly renounce the recollection of the dream.
1:206
沒有人能將這事向王指明,因為沒有一位大君王或掌權者,會向術士或迦勒底人查問這樣的事;
There is no man that can make the matter known to the king, inasmuch as no great king or ruler asks such a thing of an enchanter or a Chaldean;
1:207
( ιαʹ.)
(Verse 11.) Because the word which the king asks is weighty;
1:208
and there is no other who can declare it before the king, except the gods, whose dwelling is not with any flesh. Whence it is not possible for it to happen just as you suppose.
1:209
他們說:你當向我們索求人所能為的事,不要索求那超乎本性的事;
Ask of us human things, they say, not things beyond nature;
1:210
for it befits kings above all men to guide their kingdom justly, and to ask of their subjects the things that are possible.
1:211
然而你如今所要求的,乃是不義的要求;
But what you now demand, you demand unjustly;
1:212
for such knowledge does not belong to men clothed with flesh, but to the bodiless nature which knows all things exactly.
1:213
He teaches the king that such knowledge belongs neither to men, who creep upon the earth, nor indeed to the gods who do not exist, but to the God who made all things.
1:214
But each of these will receive its fitting interpretation in its proper place.
1:215
經上說:那時王大發烈怒,忿恨填膺,下令要滅絕巴比倫所有的哲士;
Then, it says, the king in great fury and wrath commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babylon;
1:216
for arrogance and pride, having gained authority, contrives destruction for his subjects the Jews.
1:217
「王的臣宰啊,這道厚顏無恥的命令為何從王面前發出呢?」看來他對此並不知情,因為他未曾被召入巴比倫哲士的聚會之中;
'O officer of the king, concerning what has this shameless decree gone forth from the king's presence?' For, as it seems, he was ignorant of it, inasmuch as he had not been summoned to the assembly of the wise men of Babylon;
1:218
for the three years had not yet passed, after which the king of the Babylonians had ordered that they, having been nourished for that appointed period with royal food, should be brought in before him.
1:219
但若在這些事之前,他已敘述說他們既已進入,又因顯為勝於眾人而蒙選拔,任何人都不必詫異;
But if before these things he narrated the account, that they both entered in and were preferred above the others, being seen to be superior, let no one wonder;
1:220
因為他想要把先前那段記事收結,便清楚地講明了那時所發生的一切;
for wishing to bring that former narrative to its conclusion, he clearly set forth all that had then come to pass;
1:221
then thereafter he passes to another narrative concerning the things that had happened in the intervening time.
1:222
至於他在王召聚巴比倫哲士之時,尚不在那些能向王坦然直言者之列,這由他對那不義屠殺的無知即可作證;
That he was not yet among those who had freedom of speech with the king when the king gathered together the wise men of Babylon, his ignorance of the unjust slaughter bears witness;
1:223
for being ignorant of this cause, he questioned Arioch.
1:224
他既已明白,便鼓起勇氣去見王面談,並求王寬容他些許時日,以便尋索那夢並尋得其解釋;
And when he had learned it, he takes courage for the interview with the king, and asks him to grant him a little time for the search after the dream and the discovery of its interpretation;
1:225
then he teaches us the manner of the discovery, not seeking honor for himself, but calling us forth to a like earnestness.
1:226
因為那些行虛謊之工的人是與神的援助無分的,他們只憑那褪去了敬虔的人間推理,凡所言所行都是為要欺哄世人;
For the workers of falsehood are destitute of the divine alliance, and employing only human reasonings stripped bare of piety, they say and do all things for the deceiving of men;
1:227
但那些以真理為養育的人,若沒有從上頭而來的幫助,便絕不敢說甚麼或行甚麼;
but the nurslings of truth do not venture to say or to do anything apart from the help from above;
1:228
and fastening their own requests upon the providence that oversees all things, they stand unmoved, not shaken, nor carried about hither and thither, but delivered from the tempest of human reasonings.
1:229
他獻上懇求與禱告,並不單單信靠自己,也把那些與他同心同道之人納入懇求的團契之中;
supplication and prayer, and not trusting to himself alone, but taking also those of like manner into fellowship of the supplication;
1:230
and he was not disappointed of his hope.
1:231
'Blessed be the name of the Lord God from everlasting and to everlasting, for wisdom and understanding are his.'
1:232
'And he himself changes seasons and times, sets up kings and removes them, giving wisdom to the wise, and understanding to those who know understanding.'
1:233
他說:這是理所當然的,就是要不住地歌頌那永恆永存的神,祂是智慧與聰明的泉源,正直良善地治理萬有,藉著萬事的變遷揭露人間繁榮的不穩固,同時向眾人清楚顯明祂自己的能力;
For it is fitting, he says, to hymn continually the eternal and everlasting God, who is the fountain of wisdom and understanding, who governs all things rightly and well, and by the changes of affairs convicts the instability of human prosperity, while showing clearly to all his own might;
1:234
因為祂既立了君王,又能輕易地將他們廢黜,賜下權柄,又隨自己的心意將這權柄奪回;
for having ordained kings, again he readily deposes them, and having given authority, he takes it away whenever he wills;
1:235
祂也是智慧與聰明的供給者;
and of wisdom too and of understanding he is the supplier;
1:236
祂賜下這智慧並非漫無分別,乃是賜給那些願意明白祂的人;
and he gives this not indiscriminately, but to those who wish to understand him;
1:237
祂隨己意啟示那些全然不顯現、卻因尚未成就而彷彿隱藏在某種深淵中的事;
and he reveals as he wills the things that in no way appear, but are hidden as it were in some abyss by their not yet having come to be;
1:238
and being intellectual light, dwelling in unapproachable light, he knows exactly all the things that come to pass in darkness.
1:239
這位屬神之人那謙和的心志也值得留意;
It is worthy to note also the moderate mind of this divine man;
1:240
for indeed, when making the request, he took his companions as partners of the prayer, and when weaving the hymn for the things he had received, again he made mention of them.
1:241
For he did not say, 'You made known to me the things I asked of you,' but, 'the things we asked from you.' Thus concluding the divine hymn:
1:242
「不要滅絕巴比倫的哲士,求你領我到王面前,我要將那異象的解釋告訴王。」這先知的憐憫也是合宜的;
'Do not destroy the wise men of Babylon, but bring me in before the king, and I will declare to the king the interpretation of the vision.' Fitting also is this compassion of the prophet;
1:243
for he did not endure to be delivered alone with his friends from the unjust slaughter, but he negotiates salvation also for the Chaldeans, hoping through this wonder both to release them from impiety and to lead them to the God of all. (v. 25)
1:244
因為他若早已為人所知,亞略就不會含糊其辭地說;
For if he had been known, Arioch would not have spoken indefinitely;
1:245
'I have found a man of the sons of the captivity of Judea, who will declare the interpretation to the king.' (v. 26)
1:246
'Are you able to declare the dream which I saw, and its interpretation?' It must be noted also this, that Belteshazzar he does not always address him thus, but when he speaks with the king, who had imposed this appellation upon him.
1:247
But being nevertheless questioned whether he could declare to the king both the dream and the interpretation, he answered, saying:
1:248
「王所問的那奧祕,哲士、術士、觀兆的、迦勒底人〔占卜者〕都不能告訴王;
'The mystery which the king asks, it is not for wise men, magicians, enchanters, and Gazarenes to declare to the king;
1:249
( κηʹ.)
(二十八節)然而在天上有一位神,能顯明奧祕。」他起首施教何等奇妙;
(v. 28) but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries.' Marvelously did he begin the teaching;
1:250
因為他既駁倒了那群愚妄之人,又揭露了他們的軟弱,便宣告神乃是啟示奧祕的教師;
for having convicted that chorus of foolish men, and laid bare their weakness, he declared God to be the teacher of the revelation of mysteries;
1:251
and he added, 'in heaven,' casting out the gods that are made below and worshiped.
1:252
And by the singular name he casts out the multitude of the gods that do not exist, and by the abode 'in heaven' he shows that those appearing below are not gods, but a deceit having as its occasion the craft of men.
1:253
'This God has made known to King Nebuchadnezzar the things that must come to pass in the last of the days.' Having thus introduced his theme, again he draws the king's hearing by the blessing toward good will.
1:254
他說:「王啊,願你萬歲。」因為他既將要述說那夢,又將帶出解釋,並向他預言其國度的傾覆,故此先作此開場白;
'For, O king,' he says, 'live forever.' For since he is about both to tell the dream and to bring forth the interpretation, and to foretell to him the dissolution of his kingdom, he prefaces it;
1:255
他說:「我所祈求的,乃是願你長存不絕;
'It is my prayer,' he says, 'that you may live continually;
1:256
do not therefore ascribe to me the thing signified by the dream.'
1:257
'Your dream, and the visions of your head upon your bed, this is it, O king.' That is to say:
1:258
'The things you beheld by night, these are they;'
1:259
「你躺在床上時,那些念頭興起,思想日後必成的事。」他說:你躺臥榻上時,正在思忖自己是要永遠活著,還是要照人的定例歸於死亡;
'Your thoughts came up upon your bed as to what must come to pass hereafter.' You were reasoning, he says, as you lay upon your couch, whether you should live forever, or by the law of men should come under death;
1:260
and you desired to learn also the things not yet come to pass.
1:261
'And he who reveals mysteries has made known to you the things that must come to pass.'
1:262
他處處宣揚獨一的神,把多神論的謬妄驅逐出去;
And everywhere he proclaims the one God, casting out the error of polytheism;
1:263
then he shows also the moderation of his own mind.
1:264
他說:「這奧祕顯明給我,並非因我有勝過一切活人的智慧,乃是為要使那解釋為王所知,並要叫你曉得你心中的意念。」他說:「我得著這啟示,不是因我比眾人更有智慧,乃是要叫你明白你所渴慕要明白的事;
'For to me,' he says, 'this mystery was revealed, not by the wisdom that is in me beyond all the living, but for the sake of making the interpretation known to the king, and that you might know the thoughts of your heart.' 'For I obtained this revelation,' he says, 'not because I am wiser than all men, but that you might learn what you desired to learn;
1:265
and he used me as the minister of this knowledge, as his own servant.'
1:266
He begins then the exposition, and first tells the dream itself.
1:267
'You, O king, were beholding, and behold, one image, vast, that image great, and its appearance surpassing, standing before your face, and its aspect terrible.'
1:268
'An image, whose head was of pure gold, its hands and its breast and its arms of silver, and its belly and its thighs of bronze.'
1:269
「腿是鐵的,腳是半鐵半泥的。」他藉前面所述指明了四種材料:金、銀、銅、鐵;
'Its legs of iron, its feet part of iron and part of clay.' By the things aforementioned he indicated four materials: the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron;
1:270
for he did not speak of clay by itself, but mingled with the iron.
1:271
因為別的國度也曾興起,甚至於今仍然存立,這是顯而易見的;
For that other kingdoms too have arisen, and even at the present time subsist, is manifest;
1:272
yet one cannot see them ruling over all or over the greater part of the nations, but only over one or two.
1:273
所以他說:眾國中最先興起的乃是亞述人的統治,這與巴比倫人的統治原是同一個;
He says therefore that the first of all to arise was the dominion of the Assyrians, which is the same as that of the Babylonians;
1:274
因為這些人和那些人同是亞述人;
for Assyrians are both these and those;
1:275
but at one time they held the royal seat in Ninus, called Nineveh among the Hebrews, and at another time in Babylon.
1:276
至於這些人和那些人的國原是一個,先知自己也作見證;
That the kingdom of these and of those is one, the prophet himself also bears witness;
1:277
for interpreting the dream, he says:
1:278
'The head of gold, you are it, O king.' And the blessed prophet Jeremiah also says:
1:279
「巴比倫素來是耶和華手中的金杯,使全地沉醉;
'Babylon was a golden cup in the Lord's hand, making all the earth drunk;
1:280
the nations drank of her wine.'
1:281
因此他們震動了,巴比倫忽然傾倒,被摔碎了。但若亞述人的國與這國不同、且比這國更古老,人又當稱它為哪一種材質呢?至聖的摩西也見證這些事確是如此;
For this reason they were shaken, and suddenly Babylon fell and was broken to pieces. But if the kingdom of the Assyrians was other than this one and older than it, what material would one call it? The most divine Moses too bears witness that these things are so;
1:282
for in the account of the world's origin, having spoken concerning Nimrod that he was a mighty hunter before the Lord, he went on to add:
1:283
所以第一種材質,就是那金子,表明亞述人和巴比倫人的國;
Therefore the first material, which is the gold, signifies the kingdom of the Assyrians and Babylonians;
1:284
他稱它為頭,因為它是最先出現的;
and he names it the head, as having come into being first;
1:285
the second, which is the silver, is that of the Persians and Medes.
1:286
For Cyrus, springing from both sides—on his mother's side from the Medes, on his father's side from the Persians—overthrew the kingdom of the Assyrians, that is, of the Babylonians, and transferred the kingdom to the Persians.
1:287
他稱他為胸膛和膀臂,為要顯明他與兩個民族的親屬關係;
He called him breast and arms, in order to show his kinship with two nations;
1:288
for by the right arm he signifies his paternal descent, and by the left his maternal, whose union the breast is entrusted to hold, since it contains the heart, the storehouse of the reasonings—and it is by reasoning that marriage contracts too are accomplished.
1:289
那銅他稱為馬其頓的國,這國在波斯之後興起,同樣轄制了萬國;
The bronze he called the Macedonian kingdom, which appeared after the Persian and likewise gained mastery over all;
1:290
and to it he assigned the belly and the thighs, indicating by the belly the sole rule of Alexander, and by the thighs the division of the kingdom that came about after his death.
1:291
那鐵他稱為羅馬的國;
The iron he called the Roman kingdom;
1:292
and this succeeded the Macedonian.
1:293
他把兩條小腿分派給這國,因為它們處於全身的末端,能夠承載整個身體;
To it he assigned the legs, inasmuch as they are at the extremity of the whole body and are able to carry the entire body;
1:294
and the soles of the feet, which are themselves also of iron but mingled with clay.
1:295
他陳明這些材質的差異,所顯示的不是價值上的分別,而是力量上的分別;
He set forth the difference of the materials, showing the distinction not of value but of strength;
1:296
因為銀比金更為堅實;
for the silver is more solid than the gold;
1:297
銅比銀更為剛硬;
and the bronze is firmer than the silver;
1:298
and the iron is by a great measure more solid than the bronze itself.
1:299
The difference, therefore, is not in value but in strength and power.
1:300
It is necessary to inquire why on earth he beheld the composition of these materials in an image; for nothing is revealed by the God of all things simply and in vain.
1:301
For nothing is revealed simply nor in vain by the God of all.
1:302
The image has forms, but not realities.
1:303
現今的生命正是如此:沒有一樣是持久的,也沒有一樣是常存的;
Such is the present life: having nothing enduring nor abiding;
1:304
wherefore the blessed Paul also cried out that 'the fashion of this world passes away.' And elsewhere, exhorting, he says:
1:305
'Yet all things are vanity, every living man. Surely man walks about in an image; he heaps up treasure, and does not know for whom he will gather it.'
1:306
Since, then, the present life has swift-veering changes (for all visible things are mortal, temporary, and perishable), and the image has not the activity of realities but only displays the forms of kings and rulers and subjects, and besides this the very form is easily dissolved—
1:307
fittingly the God of all things, wishing to instruct that arrogant king in the vanity of human pride and to teach that human affairs undergo the readiest change, set before him in a dream an image, and apportioned its parts among the materials, teaching the frequent and successive successions of kings, and persuading all that He alone holds perpetual dominion, without beginning and without end, in a word, an everlasting kingdom.
1:308
'You were watching until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay, and utterly crushed them.'
1:309
「於是鐵、泥、銅、銀、金一同砸碎,成了夏天禾場上的糠秕,被風吹散,無處可尋;打碎這像的石頭卻變成一座大山,充滿全地。」這夢的結局便是如此;
'Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver, the gold were crushed all at once, and became like chaff from a summer threshing floor; and the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them; and the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.' Such was the end of the dream;
1:310
but it is fitting for us to begin the interpretation from below.
1:311
Let us therefore first inquire who is he that is called a stone, and who at first appeared small but afterwards was shown to be very great and covered the inhabited world.
1:312
Let us hear God Himself speaking through Isaiah the prophet:
1:313
'The stone which the builders rejected, this has become the head of the corner.'
1:314
'This was the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes.' And the blessed Peter too, when addressing the Jews and bringing forward into their midst the Lord's prophecy, says:
1:315
'This is the stone which was set at nought by you the builders, which has become the head of the corner.' And the blessed Paul also says:
1:316
'Built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone.' And elsewhere he says:
1:317
'No one can lay a foundation other than the one that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.' And again:
1:318
'For He was cut from a mountain without hands, having been born of a Virgin apart from marital union;
1:319
and Holy Scripture often knows how to call the birth that is above nature a 'quarrying.'
1:320
This one, who of old appeared small on account of the nature He put on, was all at once shown to be a very great mountain, filling the whole inhabited world.
1:321
For 'the whole earth was filled with the knowledge of the Lord, as many waters cover the seas.' This one shall strike the image on its feet of clay and iron, that is, He shall bring to rest also the last kingdom, and make it vanished and invisible.
1:322
因為沒有別的國要承接它,惟有祂要顯露祂自己的國,並向萬人彰顯出來;
For no other kingdom shall succeed it, but He shall strip bare His own kingdom and reveal it to all;
1:323
and of all those kingdoms He shall make even the memory to vanish, like dust, which is produced from a threshing floor but is scattered by the wind.
1:324
Having thus told the whole dream to the king, he went on to add:
1:325
'This is the dream, and we will tell its interpretation before the king.'
1:326
「王啊,你是諸王之王。」他說這話並非出於奉承,乃是採用慣常的稱呼;
'You, O king, are a king of kings.' He did not say this out of flattery, but making use of the customary title;
1:327
for over all the rulers of nations, who were called kings, he held the dominion.
1:328
'You, he says, O king, are a king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given a kingdom mighty and strong and honoured in every place.' For it is not by human strength, he says, that you have prevailed over all, but from God, who holds the heavenly kingdom, who has given you this authority, so as to rule and reign over the people in every place, wherever the sons of men dwell.
1:329
'And the beasts of the field and the birds of heaven He has given into your hand, and has made you lord over all.'
1:330
And by 'beasts' he means those barbarians who live more brutishly, and by 'birds' those adorned with understanding, superior to other men, and winged in their thinking.
1:331
'Over all these,' he says, 'He has declared you king.'
1:332
'You therefore are the head of gold'—that is, your kingdom is.
1:333
For he does not speak concerning the person, but concerning the kingdom itself.
1:334
For indeed after his death, Evil-Merodach reigned over the Babylonians, and after him Belshazzar.
1:335
But if he had spoken concerning the person himself, that 'You are the head of gold,' how shall we understand the words:
1:336
'After you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you'? For he does not indicate the kingdom of his sons, but the Persian.
1:337
The kingdom of the Assyrians, that is, of the Babylonians.
1:338
「在你以後必興起另一國,不及於你。」就是波斯的國;
'And after you shall arise another kingdom inferior to you.' The Persian;
1:339
and he calls it inferior, not as being weaker, but as being second.
1:340
「又有第三國,就是那銅的,必掌管全地。」他所說的是馬其頓的國;
'And a third kingdom, which is the bronze, which shall rule over all the earth.' He means the Macedonian;
1:341
for Alexander the son of Philip ruled over all the earth, subduing all mankind in twelve years of his reign.
1:342
'And a fourth kingdom shall be strong as the iron;
1:343
for even as the iron breaks small and subdues all things, so it shall break all things small and subdue them.' He means the Roman kingdom, which became most mighty and prevailed over all nations, so to speak, and exacted tribute and tax from all.
1:344
For the 'shall break small' he placed with reference to this, but the 'shall subdue' with reference to obedience and good order and lawful government.
1:345
'And whereas you saw the feet and the toes, part of iron and part of clay, it shall be a divided kingdom, and there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, even as you saw the iron mingled with the miry clay.' He said 'another' not according to kind, but according to the quality of its power.
1:346
For if he had been speaking according to kind, he would have called it a fifth, just as he had called one third and another fourth.
1:347
But since he knows that the latter ends of the iron kingdom are weaker, he placed 'another' on account of its weakness, and quite fittingly.
1:348
因為在上文他曾顯明它極其強盛;
For above he showed it to be exceedingly mighty;
1:349
for such were its beginnings.
1:350
But nevertheless he does not say that its final parts too will be entirely weak.
1:351
'For from the root of the iron,' he says, 'there shall be in it, in the manner that you saw the iron mingled with the earthen clay.'
1:352
(μβʹ.)
(四十二)「腳趾頭一部分是鐵,一部分是泥。」這連我們自己的解釋都不需要;
(42) 'And the toes of the feet were partly of iron and partly of clay.' This does not even require our own interpretation;
1:353
for the Prophet himself, interpreting, says:
1:354
'Part of the kingdom shall be strong, and part of it shall be broken.' To these words he adds:
1:355
「你既見鐵與泥陶相摻雜,他們必在人的後裔中彼此混雜。」這尤其顯明,這國並非有別於鐵,乃是同一國處於較軟弱的境況,其中一部分堅強,一部分軟弱;
'And whereas you saw the iron mixed with the earthen clay, they shall be mingled together in the seed of men.' This most of all shows that this kingdom is not other than the iron, but the same one in a weaker condition, and that part of it is strong and part weak;
1:356
yet the bond of kinship shall join the weak portion to the strong.
1:357
For the phrase, 'They shall be mingled together in the seed of men,' declares this:
1:358
'There shall be,' he says, 'a certain intermingling and intermarriage between these and those; yet the discord shall destroy the rights of kinship.'
1:359
'For they shall not,' he says, 'be cleaving one to another, even as the iron does not mingle with the clay.'
1:360
把在我們之前作過解釋的某些人的見解提出來,也是合宜的;
It is fitting also to bring forward into the midst the opinions of some who have interpreted before us;
1:361
for in this way the truth will be shown more clearly.
1:362
有些著作者說,第四國,就是那鐵,乃是馬其頓人亞歷山大;
Now some of the writers said that the fourth kingdom, that is, the iron, was Alexander the Macedonian;
1:363
但他們本應看明:首先,他說那金頭乃是尼布甲尼撒本人,就是巴比倫人,或說亞述人的國;
But they ought to have observed, first, that he said Nebuchadnezzar himself was the golden head, that is, the kingdom of the Babylonians, or rather the Assyrians;
1:364
隨後波斯與瑪代的國同時承接了它;
and the kingdom of the Persians and Medes succeeded it at the same time;
1:365
因為古列出於這兩個民族,並統轄這一方與那一方,他推翻了巴比倫人的國,又掌管了波斯人;
for Cyrus was sprung from both nations, and ruling over both these and those, having overthrown the kingdom of the Babylonians, he gained mastery over the Persians;
1:366
他把這國稱為第三國;
This kingdom he named the third;
1:367
and no other succeeded it, but that of the Romans.
1:368
因此他們本應首先從那數目和所指明的事上明白並學會:第三國乃是馬其頓人的國,就是那銅;
They ought, therefore, first of all, from the number and from the matters indicated, to have understood and learned that the third is the kingdom of the Macedonians, that is, the bronze;
1:369
那鐵。但若那些事在他們看來實在過於晦暗難明,他們至少也該從結局辨明這整個預言;
the iron. But if those things seemed to them altogether too obscure, they ought at least, from the end, to have discerned the whole prediction;
1:370
for immediately after showing the weak and earthen end of the iron kingdom, he added:
1:371
'And in the days of those kings.' That is, when the earthen and the iron have their intermingling, and have embraced kinship with one another, yet have obtained no concord even from that kinship,
1:372
'The God of heaven shall raise up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed unto the ages, and his kingdom shall not be left to another people.'
1:373
'It shall break in pieces and winnow all the kingdoms, and it itself shall stand unto the ages.'
1:374
(μεʹ.)
(45) 'In the manner that you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain without hands, and it broke in pieces the clay, the iron, the bronze, the silver, the gold.' These things directly show the end of things present, and the endlessness of the kingdom of the heavens.
