καὶ ἐγγὺς γενόμενος τοῦ ἐξελθεῖν τῆς ἐρήμου , ἐλαύνοντός με τοῦ πάθους , τοῖς μὲν γείτοσι τοῖς ἐμοῖς οὐκ ἀνεθέμην τὸ πρᾶγμα , οὔτε τῷ διδασκάλῳ μου Εὐαγρίῳ·
我被這情慾逼迫,幾乎要離開曠野了,卻沒有把這事告訴我的鄰舍,也沒有告訴我的老師埃瓦格里烏斯;
and having come near to leaving the desert, driven by this passion, I confided the matter neither to my neighbors nor to my teacher Evagrius;

λεληθότως δὲ παραβαλὼν εἰς τὴν πανέρημον , συνετύγχανον ἐπὶ ἡμέρας δεκαπέντε τοῖς κατὰ τὴν Σκῆτιν γηράσασι πατράσιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ·
我暗暗地進入大曠野深處,與那些在斯凱提斯曠野中年邁老去的眾教父相處了十五天;
but secretly making my way into the deep desert, for fifteen days I associated with the fathers who had grown old in the desert around Scetis;

在他們當中,我也遇見了帕宏。
among whom I also met Pachon.

Εὑρὼν οὖν αὐτὸν ἀκεραιότε ρον καὶ ἀσκητικώτερον , ἐθάρρησα ἀναθέσθαι μου αὐτῷ τὰ τῆς διανοίας
我見他為人格外純真、苦修更為嚴謹,便壯著膽子向他傾訴我內心的事。
Finding him therefore more guileless and more disciplined in asceticism, I took courage to lay before him the matters of my mind.

οὐ γὰρ αὐτὸ πάσχεις ἀπὸ ῥᾳθυμίας·
他說:「你不要以為自己受這試探是出於懈怠;
He said: "Do not suppose that you suffer this from slothfulness;

μαρτυρεῖ γάρ σοι καὶ ὁ τόπος καὶ διὰ τὴν σπάνιν τῶν χρειῶν καὶ διὰ τὸ μὴ εἶναι συντυχίας θηλειῶν·
因為這地方本身就替你作見證——既因生活所需的匱乏,又因這裡根本沒有與女子相遇的機會;
for both the place itself testifies on your behalf—both because of the scarcity of necessities and because there are no encounters with women;

Τριπλοῦς γάρ ἐστιν ὁ πόλεμος ὁ πορνικός
原來淫慾的爭戰有三重。
for the warfare of lust is threefold.

Ποτὲ μὲν γὰρ ἡ σὰρξ ἡμῖν ἐπιτίθεται εὐρωστοῦσα·
有時是肉體強健旺盛,向我們發動攻擊;
For sometimes the flesh, being in full vigor, assails us;

ποτὲ δὲ τὰ πάθη διὰ τῶν λογισμῶν·
有時是情慾藉著邪念而來;
sometimes the passions through evil thoughts;

ποτὲ δὲ καὶ αὐτὸς ὁ δαίμων τῇ βασκανίᾳ
有時又是那魔鬼親自藉著嫉害而來。
and sometimes the demon himself, by his malice.

Ἐγὼ γὰρ πολλὰ παρατηρήσας εὕρηκα τοῦτο
因為我自己經過諸多細察,才發現了這事。
For I myself, having observed much, have discovered this.

Ἰδοὺ ὡς ὁρᾷς με γέροντα ἄνθρωπον·
「你看,正如你所見的,我是個老人了;
"Behold, as you see, I am an old man;

τεσσαρακοστὸν ἔτος ἔχω ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ κέλλῃ φροντίζων τῆς ἐμαυτοῦ σωτηρίας·

I have been forty years in this cell, taking thought for my own salvation;

and having reached this age, I am tempted even to this very day."

Καὶ ὡς διώμνυτο ὅτι Ἐπὶ δώδεκα ἔτη μετὰ τὸ πεντηκοστὸν ἔτος οὐ νύκτα μοι συνεχώρησεν , οὐχ ἡμέραν , ἐπιτιθέμενος
他並起誓說:「在我五十歲以後的十二年間,那魔鬼日夜不斷地攻擊我,從不放過我。」
And he swore that "For twelve years after my fiftieth year, the demon gave me no rest by night nor by day, ever assailing me."

Ὑπονοήσας οὖν ὅτι ἀπέστη μου ὁ θεός , διὸ καὶ καταδυναστεύομαι , ᾑρε τισάμην ἀποθανεῖν ἀλόγως ἢ πάθει σώματος ἀσχημονῆσαι
「我於是猜想是神離棄了我,所以我才這樣被轄制;我寧可糊里糊塗地死去,也不願因肉體的情慾而蒙羞。
"Suspecting therefore that God had departed from me—and that this was why I was being so overpowered—I chose to die irrationally rather than to disgrace myself through a passion of the body.

Καὶ ἐξελθὼν καὶ περιελθὼν τὴν ἔρημον εὗρον σπήλαιον ὑαίνης·
於是我走出去,在曠野中四處遊蕩,找到了一個鬣狗的洞穴;
So I went out and, wandering through the desert, found a hyena's den;

εἰς ὃ σπήλαιον ἔθηκα ἐμαυτὸν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ γυμνόν , ἵνα ἐξελθόντα φάγῃ με τὰ θηρία
白天我赤身躺進那洞穴裡,好讓野獸出來把我吃掉。
into which den I laid myself naked in the daytime, so that the wild beasts coming out might devour me.

Ὡς οὖν ἐγένετο ἑσπέρα , κατὰ τὸ γεγραμμένον Ἔθου σκότος καὶ ἐγένετο νύξ·
到了晚上,正如經上所寫的:『你安排黑暗,便有了黑夜;
So when evening came, according to that which is written, 'You appointed darkness, and it became night;

ἐν αὐτῇ διελεύσονται πάντα τὰ θηρία τοῦ δρυμοῦ , ἐξελθόντες οἱ θῆρες , ὅ τε ἄρσην καὶ ἡ θήλεια , ὠσφράνθησάν μου ἀπὸ κεφαλῆς ἕως ποδῶν περιλείξαντες·
林中一切野獸都在其中行動』;那些野獸就出來了,公的母的都有,從我的頭到腳把我嗅了一遍,又遍體舔了我;
in it all the beasts of the forest go about,' the wild beasts came out, both the male and the female, and they sniffed me from head to foot, licking me all over;

καὶ ὡς προσε δόκων βρωθῆναι ἀνεχώρησαν ἀπ' ἐμοῦ
我正等著被吞吃的時候,牠們竟離我而去。
and just when I expected to be devoured, they withdrew from me.

Πεσὼν οὖν διὰ πάσης νυκτὸς οὐκ ἐβρώθην·
我這樣躺了整整一夜,竟沒有被吃掉;
So having lain there throughout the whole night, I was not devoured;

λογισάμενος δὲ ὅτι ἐφείσατό μου ὁ θεός , αὖθις ὑποστρέφω εἰς τὴν κέλλαν
我便思想是神憐惜了我,於是又回到自己的斗室。
and reasoning that God had spared me, I returned again to my cell.

Καρτερήσας οὖν ὁ δαίμων ἡμέρας ὀλίγας πάλιν ἐπέθετό μοι σφοδρότερον τοῦ πρώτου , ὡς παρὰ μικρόν με καὶ βλασφημῆσαι
那魔鬼忍耐了幾天,又比先前更猛烈地攻擊我,以致我險些連褻瀆的話都說出來了。
Then the demon, having held off for a few days, assailed me again more violently than before, so that I came within a little of even blaspheming.

Με τασχηματισθεὶς οὖν εἰς αἰθιόπισσαν κόρην , ἣν ἑωράκειν ποτὲ ἐν νεότητί μου εἰς τὸ θέρος καλαμωμένην , ἐπικά θηταί μου τοῖς γόνασι , καὶ ἐπὶ τοσοῦτόν με κεκίνηκεν ὡς νομίσαι με συγγενέσθαι αὐτῇ
他於是化身為一個衣索比亞少女——就是我年輕時曾見過在夏天割蘆葦的那女子——坐在我的膝上,把我撩撥得如此厲害,以致我以為自己已與她苟合。
Transforming himself therefore into an Ethiopian girl, whom I had once seen in my youth gleaning reeds in the summer, he sat upon my knees, and he so stirred me up that I thought I had intercourse with her.

Ἀπομανεὶς οὖν ἔδωκα αὐτῇ κόσσον καὶ γέγονεν ἄφαντος
我於是怒不可遏,揮拳打她一掌,她就消失不見了。
In a frenzy therefore I struck her a blow with my fist, and she became invisible.

Ἐπὶ διετίαν οὖν τῆς δυσωδίας τῆς χειρός μου ἀνασχέσθαι οὐκ ἠδυνάμην
此後足有兩年之久,我都無法忍受自己那隻手的惡臭。
For two whole years thereafter I could not endure the stench of my own hand.

Μικροψυχήσας οὖν καὶ ἀπευδοκήσας ἐξῆλθον εἰς τὴν πανέρημον ἀλώμενος·
我於是灰心喪志、心生絕望,便出去到大曠野深處四處漂泊;
So becoming faint-hearted and despairing, I went out into the deep desert, wandering about;

καὶ εὑρὼν ἀσπίδα μικρὰν καὶ λαβὼν αὐτὴν προσφέρω τοῖς γεννητικοῖς μορίοις , ἵνα κἂν οὕτω δηχθεὶς ἀποθάνω
我找到一條小毒蛇,就拿起牠來貼在我的私處上,好叫我就算這樣被咬,也好死了。
and finding a small asp and taking it, I applied it to my genitals, that even thus, being bitten, I might die.

Καὶ προστρίψας τοῦ θηρίου τὴν κεφαλὴν τοῖς μορίοις , ὡς αἰτίοις μοι τοῦ πειρασμοῦ , οὐκ ἐδήχθην
我把那毒物的頭往那些部位——就是引我受試探的禍根——上摩擦,牠竟沒有咬我。
And though I rubbed the creature's head against those parts, as being the cause of my temptation, I was not bitten.

Ἤκουσα οὖν φωνῆς ἐλθούσης ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ μου , ὅτι Ἄπελθε , Πάχων , ἀγωνίζου·
那時我聽見有聲音進入我的心思,說:『帕宏哪,去吧,繼續爭戰;
Then I heard a voice coming into my mind, saying: 'Go, Pachon, struggle on;

διὰ γὰρ τοῦτο ἀφῆκά σε καταδυναστευθῆναι , ἵνα μὴ μέγα φρονήσῃς ὡς δυνάμενος , ἀλλ' ἐπιγνούς σου τὴν ἀσθένειαν μὴ θαρρήσῃς τῇ σῇ πολιτείᾳ , ἀλλὰ προσδράμῃς τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ βοηθείᾳ
我容許你被轄制,正是為了這緣故——免得你自高自大,以為自己有能力;倒要你認清自己的軟弱,不倚靠自己的修行生活,而是奔向神的幫助。』
for it was for this reason that I allowed you to be overpowered—lest you should think great things of yourself as being capable, but rather, recognizing your weakness, you should not trust in your own ascetic life, but should run to the help of God.'

Οὕτω πληροφορηθεὶς ἀνέκαμψα , καὶ μετὰ θάρρους καθίσας καὶ μηκέτι φροντίσας τοῦ πολέμου εἰρή νευσα τὰς ἐπιλοίπους ἡμέρας
我這樣得了確據,便折返回來,懷著篤定坦然安坐,不再為那爭戰掛慮,餘下的日子都得享平安,
Thus assured, I turned back, and sitting with confidence and no longer taking thought for the warfare, I lived in peace the remaining days,

φρόνησιν οὐκέτι μοι ἤγγισεν
以致那邪念再也不挨近我了。
so that thought no longer drew near to me.

Concerning Stephen the Libyan. A certain Stephen, a Libyan by race, dwelt for sixty years off to the side of Marmarica and the Mareotis.

Οὗτος εἰς ἄκρον γενόμενος ἀσκητὴς καὶ διακριτικὸς κατηξιώθη χαρίσματος ὥστε πάντα τὸν λυπούμενον οἱαν δήποτε λύπην συντυχόντα αὐτῷ ἄλυπον ἀναχωρεῖν
這人成了登峰造極的苦修者,又有明辨的恩賜,蒙神賜下這樣的恩寵:凡帶著任何愁苦來見他的人,無不釋懷、毫無憂愁地離去。
This man, having become an ascetic of the highest order and a man of discernment, was deemed worthy of such a gift of grace that everyone who came to him grieving, with whatever kind of grief, would depart free from sorrow.

He was also well known to the blessed Antony;

οἱ δὲ περὶ τὸν ἅγιον Ἀμμώνιον καὶ Εὐάγριον συντυχόντες μοι διηγήσαντο ὅτι Κατελά βομεν αὐτὸν ἀρρωστίᾳ τοιαύτῃ περιπεσόντα κατ' αὐτοὺς τοὺς τόπους τῶν διδύμων καὶ τῆς βαλάνου ἕλκος ποιήσαντα τὸ λεγόμενον φαγέδαιναν
但同行的聖人阿摩尼烏斯與埃瓦格里烏斯曾與他相見,向我講述說:『我們去見他時,他正患著這樣一種病,就在睪丸與會陰那一帶,生出了那名為蝕瘡(壞疽性潰瘍)的瘡。
but those around the holy Ammonius and Evagrius, who had met him, related to me: 'We came upon him fallen into such a sickness in those very parts about the testicles and the groin, which had made the ulcer called a gangrenous sore.

Ὃν εὕρομεν τημελούμενον ὑπὸ ἰατροῦ τινός , καὶ ταῖς μὲν χερσὶν ἐργαζόμενον καὶ πλέ κοντα θαλλοὺς καὶ λαλοῦντα ἡμῖν , τὸ δὲ λοιπὸν σῶμα χειριζόμενον·
我們發現他正由一位醫生照料著;他一面用手做工、編織棕櫚葉、與我們談話,一面任由身體其餘的部位被動手術;
We found him being attended by a certain physician, working with his hands and plaiting palm-leaves and talking with us, while the rest of his body was being operated upon;

ὃς οὕτως ἦν διακείμενος ὡς ἄλλου τεμνομένου
他的神情泰然,彷彿被開刀的是別人。
and he was so disposed as though it were another person being cut.

Ἀποκοπέντων οὖν τῶν μελῶν καθάπερ τριχῶν , ἀναίσθητος ἦν ὑπερβολῇ παρασκευῆς θεϊκῆς
那些肢體像剪頭髮一樣被切除時,他竟毫無痛感,全因他蒙神格外的裝備。
So when the limbs were being cut off like hairs, he was insensible, by reason of his surpassing divine preparation.

Ἡμῶν δὲ τοῦτο μὲν ὑπολυπουμένων , τοῦτο δὲ καὶ σιαινομένων ὅτι τοιοῦτος βίος τοιούτῳ περιπέπτωκε πάθει καὶ χειρουργίαις τοιαύταις , λέγει ἡμῖν·
我們一面為這事憂傷,一面又為這樣聖潔的一生竟陷入這樣的病痛、受這樣的手術而生厭惡,他卻對我們說:
And when we, on the one hand, were grieving over this, and on the other were disgusted that such a life had fallen into such a malady and into such surgeries, he said to us:

Τεκνία , μηδὲν βλαβῆτε ἀπὸ τοῦ πράγματος·
『孩子們哪,不要因眼前所發生的事受到傷害;
'Little children, be not harmed by what is happening;

οὐδὲν γὰρ ὧν ποιεῖ ὁ θεὸς κακίᾳ ποιεῖ , ἀλλὰ τέλει χρηστῷ
因為神所行的事,沒有一件是出於惡意,乃都是為著美善的結局。
for nothing that God does, He does out of malice, but for a good end.

Ἴσως γὰρ καὶ ὑπεύθυνα ἦσαν τὰ μέλη κολάσεως , καὶ συμφέρον ἐστὶν αὐτὰ ὧδε δοῦναι τὴν δίκην ἢ μετὰ τὴν ἔξοδον τοῦ σταδίου
或許這些肢體本是該受懲罰的,那麼讓它們在此償清刑罰,總勝過在我跑完這人生競賽、離世以後才償還,這於我反倒有益。』
For perhaps these limbs were liable to punishment, and it is to my benefit that they pay the penalty here rather than after the exit from the stadium [of this life].'

Οὕτως οὖν ἡμᾶς παρακαλέσας καὶ ὑποστηρίξας ᾠκοδόμησε
他就這樣安慰我們、扶持我們,又造就了我們。
Having thus comforted and supported us, he edified us.

Ταῦτα δὲ διηγησάμην ἵνα μὴ ξενιζώμεθα ὅταν ἁγίους τινὰς ἴδωμεν τοιούτοις περιπε σόντας πάθεσιν
我講述這些事,是要我們在看見某些聖徒陷入這樣的病痛時,不至於詫異驚惶。
These things I have related so that we may not be astonished when we see certain holy men fallen into such afflictions.

Περὶ Οὐάλεντοσ . Οὐάλης τις γέγονε τῷ μὲν γένει Παλαιστῖνος , τῇ δὲ γνώμῃ Κορίνθιος·
論瓦倫斯。有一個瓦倫斯,按種族是巴勒斯坦人,按性情卻是哥林多人;
Concerning Valens. A certain Valens was by race a Palestinian, but in disposition a Corinthian;

因為聖保羅曾把自高自大的毛病歸在哥林多人身上。
for the holy Paul ascribed the passion of being puffed up to the Corinthians.

Οὗτος τὴν ἔρημον κατα λαβὼν ᾤκησε μεθ' ἡμῶν ἐπὶ πλείονα ἔτη·
這人來到曠野,與我們同住了許多年;
This man, having reached the desert, dwelt with us for many years;

ὃς ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον ἤλασεν ὑπερηφανίας ὡς ὑπὸ δαιμόνων ἀπατηθῆναι
他竟把自己推到如此驕傲的地步,以致被眾魔鬼所欺騙。
and he drove himself to such a pitch of pride that he was deceived by demons.

Ἐκ γὰρ τοῦ κατὰ μικρὸν ἀπατᾶσθαι αὐτὸν παρεσκεύασαν αὐτὸν μέγα φρονῆσαι , ὡς ἀγγέλων αὐτῷ συντυγχανόντων
原來牠們藉著一點一點地哄騙他,使他逐漸自高自大,彷彿有天使在與他交談一般。
For from his being deceived little by little, they brought him to think great things of himself, as though angels were conversing with him.

Μιᾶς γοῦν τῶν ἡμερῶν , ὡς διηγοῦντο , ὅτι ἐργαζόμενος ἐν τῇ σκοτίᾳ τὴν βελόνην ἀφῆκεν ἐν ᾗ κατέρραπτε τὴν σπυρίδα·
據他們所述,有一天他在黑暗中做工,把縫籃子用的針掉了;
On one of those days, as they related, while he was working in the dark, he dropped the needle with which he was stitching the basket;

καὶ μὴ εὑρόντος αὐτὴν αὐτοῦ , λαμπάδα ἐποίησεν ὁ δαίμων καὶ εὗρε τὴν βελόνην
他遍尋不著,那魔鬼竟造出一盞燈來,他便找著了那根針。
and when he could not find it, the demon made a lamp and he found the needle.

Πάλιν φυσιωθεὶς ἐπὶ τούτῳ μέγα ἐφρόνει , καὶ ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον ἐφυσιώθη ὡς καὶ τῆς κοι νωνίας τῶν μυστηρίων αὐτὸν καταφρονῆσαι
他又因這事自高自大,心高氣傲,膨脹到一個地步,竟至輕看領受聖體的聖餐。
Again, being puffed up over this, he thought great things of himself, and was so puffed up that he even came to despise the communion of the holy mysteries.

Συνέβη δὲ ἐλθόν τας τινὰς ξένους τραγήματα ἐνεγκεῖν ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ τῇ ἀδελφότητι
有一次,幾位客人前來,帶了些甜點到教會給弟兄們。
It happened that some visitors came and brought sweetmeats to the church for the brotherhood.

Λαβὼν οὖν ὁ ἅγιος Μακάριος ὁ πρεσβύτερος ἡμῶν , ἀπέστειλεν ἡμῖν ἑκάστῳ εἰς τὴν κέλλαν πρὸς δράκα , ἐν οἷς καὶ τῷ Οὐάλεντι

So the holy Macarius, our presbyter, took them and sent a handful to each of us in our cells, among whom was also Valens.

Λαβὼν οὖν ὁ Οὐάλης τὸν ἀπενεγ κόντα καὶ ὕβρισε καὶ ἐτύπτησε , καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ·
然而瓦倫斯收下時,卻辱罵並毆打那送來的人,對他說:
But when Valens received it, he insulted and struck the one who had brought it, and said to him:

Οὐκ εἰμί σου χείρων , ἵνα σὺ ἐμοὶ εὐλογίαν πέμψῃς
「我並不比你差,竟要你打發祝福之物給我!」
"I am no worse than you, that you should send me a blessing!"

Γνοὺς οὖν ὁ Μακάριος ὅτι ἐνεπαίχθη ἀπῆλθεν αὐτὸν παρακαλέσαι μετὰ μίαν ἡμέραν , καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ·
馬卡里烏斯得知自己受了輕慢,過了一天便去勸誡他,對他說:
When Macarius learned that he had been mocked, he went to admonish him a day later, and said to him:

但因瓦倫斯不肯聽從他的勸告,馬卡里烏斯便離去了。
But since he would not heed his exhortations, Macarius withdrew.

Πληροφορηθεὶς οὖν ὁ δαίμων ὅτι εἰς ἄκρον αὐτοῦ ἐπείσθη τῇ πλάνῃ , ἀπέρχεται καὶ σχηματίζει ἑαυτὸν εἰς τὸν σωτῆρα , καὶ παραγίνεται ἐν νυκτὶ ἐν φαντασίᾳ ἀγγέλων χιλίων λαμπάδας ἐχόντων καὶ τροχὸν πύρινον , ἐν ᾧ ἔδοξε τὸν σωτῆρα σχηματίζειν , καὶ ἕνα προλαμβάνοντα καὶ λέγοντα·
魔鬼確知瓦倫斯已徹底中了牠的迷惑,便離去並把自己裝扮成救主的模樣,在夜間以幻象顯現,有千名天使手執火把,又有一輪火焰,魔鬼似乎在其中假扮救主,並有一位走在前頭說道:
Now the demon, fully assured that Valens had been utterly won over to his deception, departed and fashioned himself into the likeness of the Saviour, and came by night in a vision of a thousand angels bearing lamps and a fiery wheel, in which he seemed to fashion the Saviour, with one going before and saying:

Ἠράσθη σου ὁ Χριστὸς τῇ πολιτείᾳ καὶ τῇ παρρησίᾳ τοῦ βίου , καὶ ἦλθεν ἰδεῖν σε
「基督愛慕你的修行生活與你生活的坦然無懼,特來看望你。
"Christ has fallen in love with your way of life and the boldness of your conduct, and has come to see you.

Ἔξελθε οὖν τῆς κέλλης , καὶ μηδὲν ἄλλο ποιήσῃς ἀλλ' ἢ πόρρωθεν αὐτὸν ἰδὼν κύψας προσκύνησον , καὶ εἴσελθέ σου εἰς τὴν κέλλαν
所以你要走出修房,別作別的,只要遠遠望見他,俯身下拜敬拜他,然後回到你的修房去。」
So come out of your cell, and do nothing else but, seeing him from afar, bow down and worship him, and then go back into your cell."

Ἐξελθὼν οὖν καὶ θεασάμενος τὴν παράταξιν λαμπαδηφόρον , ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίου δὲ τὸν ἀντίχριστον , πεσὼν προσεκύνησεν
於是他走出去,望見那執火把的隊伍,又在約一斯塔狄翁之遙望見那敵基督,便俯伏下拜敬拜了牠。
So he went out, and beholding the lamp-bearing array, and at about a stadium's distance the antichrist, he fell down and worshipped him.

Ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον οὖν πάλιν τὴν ἄλλην ἡμέραν ἐφρενοβλάβησεν , ὡς εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν ἐκκλησίαν , καὶ συνηγμένης τῆς ἀδελφότητος εἰπεῖν·
次日他心智更加錯亂,竟進入教會,趁弟兄們聚集時宣稱:
And so deranged in mind was he again the next day, that he entered the church and, when the brotherhood was gathered, declared:

Ἐγὼ κοινωνίας χρείαν οὐκ ἔχω·
「我不需要聖餐了,
"I have no need of the Communion;

τὸν γὰρ Χριστὸν ἑώρακα σήμερον
因為我今天親眼見了基督。」
for I have seen Christ this very day."
1:844⧉ ⤴︎
Τότε δήσαντες αὐτὸν οἱ πατέρες καὶ σιδηρώσαντες ἐπὶ ἔτος ἓν ἀπεθερά πευσαν , εὐχαῖς καὶ ἀδιαφορίᾳ καὶ ἀπραγοτέρῳ βίῳ τὸ οἴημα αὐτοῦ καθελόντες , καὶ ὡς λέγεται·
於是眾教父把他捆綁起來,戴上鐵鍊一整年,藉著禱告、淡泊無求與較為清閒的生活拆毀他的自負,將他醫好;正如俗語所說:
Then the fathers bound him and put him in irons for a whole year, and healed him, tearing down his self-conceit by prayers and a life of indifference and freedom from care, and as the saying goes:

Τὰ ἐναντία τοῖς ἐναντίοις ἰάματα
「以相反治相反。」
"Contraries are the cures for contraries."

ἐνθεῖναι τῷ βιβλιδαρίῳ πρὸς ἀσφάλειαν τῶν ἐντυγχανόντων , καθάπερ καὶ ἁγίοις φυτοῖς τοῦ παραδείσου τὸ ξύλον τὸ γνωστὸν καλοῦ καὶ πονηροῦ·
(我把這事記在這小書中,為使讀者得著警惕,正如樂園的聖潔樹木之中也有那分別善惡的樹一般,
(I have set this down in this little book for the safeguarding of those who read it, just as among the holy plants of paradise there was also the tree of the knowledge of good and evil;

ἵνα εἴ ποτε αὐτοῖς συμβαίη κατόρθωμά τι , μὴ μέγα φρονήσωσιν ἐπὶ τῇ ἀρετῇ
好使他們若有時成就了甚麼善行,也不致因自己的美德而心高氣傲。
so that, if ever some good achievement should befall them, they may not think highly of themselves on account of their virtue.

Πολλάκις γὰρ καὶ ἀρετὴ ὑπόθεσις γίνεται πτώσεως , ὅταν μὴ σκοπῷ ὀρθῷ ἐπιτελεσθῇ·
因為美德本身往往成為墮落的因由,每逢它不是出於正直的目的而行的時候;
For often virtue itself becomes the occasion of a fall, whenever it is not accomplished with a right intention;

Εἶδον δίκαιον ἀπολλύ μενον ἐν δικαιώματι αὐτοῦ·

"I have seen a righteous man perishing in his righteousness."

有一位名叫希倫的人,是我的鄰居,亞歷山大出身,是個有教養的年輕人,思想敏銳,生活純潔;
There was a certain Hero, a neighbour of mine, an Alexandrian by birth, a refined young man, of keen mind and pure in life;

ὃς καὶ αὐτὸς μετὰ πόνους πολλοὺς τύφῳ βληθεὶς ἐξετραχηλιάσθη καὶ κατὰ τῶν πατέρων ἐφρόνησε μέγα , ὑβρίσας καὶ τὸν μακάριον Εὐάγριον , λέγων ὅτι Οἱ πειθό μενοι τῇ διδασκαλίᾳ σου ἀπατῶνται·
他在許多辛勞之後,自己也被自高自大所擊倒,一頭栽倒墮落,又對眾教父狂妄自大,甚至侮辱有福的埃瓦格里烏斯,說:『跟從你教導的人都被欺騙了,
who, after many labours, was himself smitten with conceit, broke his neck in a headlong fall, and thought arrogantly against the fathers, even insulting the blessed Evagrius, saying that "Those who follow your teaching are deceived;

οὐ χρὴ γὰρ διδασκάλοις ἑτέροις προσέχειν παρεκτὸς τοῦ Χριστοῦ
因為人除了基督以外,不應理會任何別的教師。』
for one ought not to give heed to any teachers other than Christ."

Ἀπεχρήσατο δὲ καὶ τῇ μαρτυρίᾳ πρὸς τὸν σκοπὸν τῆς ἑαυτοῦ μωρίας , καὶ ἔλεγεν ὅτι Αὐτὸς ὁ σωτὴρ εἶπε·
他甚至濫用聖經的明證來成就自己的愚昧,說救主親自說過:
And he even misused the testimony of Scripture for the purpose of his own folly, and said that the Saviour himself had said:

Μὴ καλέσητε διδάσκαλον ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς
『不要稱呼地上的人為師。』
"Call no man teacher upon the earth."

Ὃς ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον καὶ αὐτὸς ἐσκοτώθη ὡς καὶ αὐτὸν ὕστερον σιδηρωθῆναι , μὴ θέλοντα μηδὲ τοῖς μυστηρίοις προσέρχεσθαι
他也照樣被蒙蔽到一個地步,以致後來自己也被戴上鐵鍊,因為他甚至不願前來領受聖體的奧蹟。
He too was so far darkened that he himself was afterwards put in irons, since he was unwilling even to approach the holy Mysteries.

Καθ' ὑπερ βολὴν ἦν λεπτὸς τῇ πολιτείᾳ , ὡς πολλοὺς διηγεῖσθαι τοὺς ἐν συνηθείᾳ ὅτι πολλάκις διὰ τριῶν μηνῶν ἐσθίει , ἀρκού μενος τῇ κοινωνίᾳ τῶν μυστηρίων καὶ εἴ που ἂν φανῇ ἀγριολάχανον
他的修行生活極為嚴苛,以致許多熟識他的人都述說,他常常每三個月才進食一次,僅以聖體奧蹟的聖餐果腹,再加上偶爾尋得的野菜。
He was exceedingly austere in his manner of life, so that many of his acquaintances would relate that he often ate but once every three months, content with the Communion of the Mysteries and, wherever it might be found, some wild herb.

Πεῖραν δὲ αὐτοῦ εἴληφα κἀγὼ μετὰ τοῦ μακαρίου Ἀλβανίου ἀπιὼν ἐπὶ τὴν Σκῆτιν
我自己也曾領教過他,那是我與有福的阿爾巴尼烏斯前往斯凱提斯曠野的時候。
I myself had experience of him too, when I was going off to Scetis with the blessed Albanius.

斯凱提斯曠野離我們有四十哩之遙;
Scetis was forty miles distant from us;

ἐν τούτοις τοῖς τεσσαράκοντα σημείοις ἡμεῖς δεύτερον βεβρώκαμεν καὶ τρίτον ἐπίομεν ὕδωρ , ἐκεῖνος δὲ μηδενὸς γευσάμενος πεζὸς βαδίζων ἀπεστήθισε δεκαπέντε ψαλμούς , εἶτα τὸν μέγαν , εἶτα τὴν πρὸς Ἑβραίους ἐπιστολήν , εἶτα τὸν Ἠσαΐαν καὶ μέρος τι τοῦ Ἱερεμίου , εἶτα Λουκᾶν τὸν εὐαγγελιστήν , εἶτα τὰς παροιμίας

in the course of these forty miles we ate twice and drank water three times, but he, having tasted nothing, walked on foot and recited by heart fifteen psalms, then the great psalm, then the Epistle to the Hebrews, then Isaiah and part of Jeremiah, then Luke the Evangelist, then the Proverbs.

And while this was so, we could not keep up with him as he walked.

這人到最後,彷彿被火驅趕一般,連在自己的修房裡也坐不住了;
This man, in the end, as though driven by fire, could not sit still even in his own cell;

ἀπελθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν Ἀλεξάν δρειαν κατ' οἰκονομίαν , τὸ δὴ λεγόμενον , ἥλῳ τὸν ἧλον ἐξέκρουσε
他因著神的安排去了亞歷山大,正如俗語所說,「以釘拔釘」。
and going off to Alexandria by divine providence, as the saying goes, "he drove out one nail with another."

Περιέπεσε γὰρ ἑκουσίως τῇ ἀδιαφορίᾳ , ἐς ὕστερον ἀκούσιον εὑράμενος σωτηρίαν
原來他甘心墮入放縱無度的生活,到後來卻違背己意地尋得了拯救。
For he fell willingly into a life of indifference, only later finding salvation against his will.

Παρέβαλε γὰρ θεάτρῳ καὶ ἱπποδρομίαις καὶ τὰς διατριβὰς εἶχεν ἐν καπηλείοις·
他常出入戲院和賽馬場,整日流連於酒館;
For he frequented the theatre and the horse-races, and spent his time in taverns;

οὕτως δὲ γαστριμαργῶν καὶ οἰνοφλυγῶν ἐνέπεσεν εἰς τὸν βόρβορον τῆς γυναικείας ἐπιθυμίας
他這樣縱情飲食、酗酒無度,便陷入了對女色情慾的污泥之中。
and thus, given to gluttony and drunkenness, he plunged into the mire of desire for women.

Καὶ ὡς ἐσκέπτετο ἁμαρτῆσαι , μιμάδι τινὶ συντυχὼν τὰ πρὸς τὸ ἕλκος αὐτοῦ διελέγετο
當他正圖謀犯罪時,遇上了一個女戲子,便與她商議那關乎他瘡傷之事。
And as he was contemplating sin, falling in with a certain actress, he discussed with her the matters pertaining to his sore.

Τούτων οὕτως διαπραττομένων γέγονεν αὐτῷ ἄνθραξ κατ' αὐτῆς τῆς βαλάνου , καὶ ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον ἐνόσησεν ἑξαμη νιαῖον χρόνον ὡς κατασαπῆναι αὐτοῦ τὰ μόρια καὶ ἀπο πεσεῖν
正當這些事進行之際,他的龜頭上長出了一個惡瘡,他病重達六個月之久,以致他的下體腐爛脫落。
While these things were going on, there arose in him a carbuncle upon the glans itself, and he was so sick for a six-month period that his parts rotted away and fell off.

Ὕστερον δὲ ὑγιάνας ἄνευ τῶν μελῶν ἐκείνων καὶ ἐπανελθὼν εἰς φρόνημα θεϊκόν , ἦλθεν ἐξομολογούμενος ταῦτα πάντα τοῖς πατράσιν·
然而後來,他在失去那些器官後痊癒了,重新回到敬虔的心志,便來向眾教父認了這一切的罪;
But afterwards, when he had recovered without those members, and had returned to a godly frame of mind, he came confessing all these things to the fathers;

but before he could put it into practice, he fell asleep after a few days.

Concerning Ptolemy. Yet another, Ptolemy by name, lived a life hard to describe or beyond all describing;

原來他住在斯凱提斯曠野之外,在那名為「梯子」的地方;
for he dwelt beyond Scetis, in the place called the Ladder;

τόπος δέ ἐστιν οὕτω καλούμενος εἰς ὃν οἰκῆσαι οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐν τῷ ἀπὸ δε καοκτὼ σημείων εἶναι τὸ φρέαρ τῶν ἀδελφῶν
那地方之所以如此得名,是因為無人能在那裡居住,因弟兄們的水井遠在十八哩之外。
and the place is so named, in which no one is able to dwell, because the well of the brethren is eighteen miles distant.

Βαστά σας οὖν ἐκεῖνος κεράμια κιλικίσια πολλὰ ἀπήνεγκε , καὶ τῷ δεκεμβρίῳ καὶ ἰαννουαρίῳ μηνὶ συνάγων τὴν δρόσον – δροσίζει γὰρ ἐν ἐκείνοις τοῖς μέρεσι τότε πολλά –σπόγγῳ ἐκ τῶν λίθων , διήρκεσεν ἐπὶ ἔτη δεκαπέντε οἰκήσας ἐκεῖ
於是那人搬去了許多西利西亞陶罐,在十二月和一月間,用海綿從岩石上收集露水——因那時節在那一帶露水降得很多——靠此維生,在那裡居住了十五年之久。
So that man carried off many Cilician earthenware jars, and in the months of December and January, gathering the dew—for at that time it falls heavily in those parts—with a sponge from the rocks, he managed to dwell there for fifteen years.

Ὃς ἀποξενωθεὶς διδασκαλίας καὶ συντυχίας ἀνδρῶν ὁσίων καὶ ὠφελείας , καὶ συνεχοῦς κοινωνίας τῶν μυστηρίων , ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον ἐξέστη τῆς εὐθείας ὡς λέγειν μηδὲν εἶναι τὰ πράγματα , ἀλλ' ἢ φέρεσθαι μετέωρον ἄχρι τῆς δεῦρο ἀλώμενον ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ ἔκδοτον ἑαυτὸν δεδωκότα γα στριμαργίᾳ καὶ οἰνοφλυγίᾳ , μηδενὶ μηδὲν ὁμιλοῦντα
但他既使自己疏離了教導、疏離了聖潔之人的相交與益處,又疏離了經常領受聖體奧蹟的聖餐,便偏離正道到一個地步,竟說萬事皆虛無,不過是懸浮飄蕩而已——他至今仍在埃及四處遊蕩,將自己交給了貪食與酗酒,對誰也不交談任何事。
But having estranged himself from teaching, from the company of holy men and their benefit, and from continual Communion of the Mysteries, he so far departed from the straight path as to say that things are nothing, but are merely borne aloft in suspension—wandering about Egypt to this very day, and having given himself over to gluttony and drunkenness, holding converse with no one about anything.

Καὶ αὕτη δὲ ἡ συμφορὰ συνέβη Πτολεμαίῳ ἐκ τῆς ἀλόγου οἰήσεως , κατὰ τὸ γεγραμμένον·
這禍患臨到托勒密,正是出於那無理性的自高自大,應驗了經上所記的:
And this calamity befell Ptolemy through irrational self-conceit, according to what is written:

Οἷς μὴ ὑπάρχει κυβέρνη σις πίπτουσιν ὥσπερ φύλλα
「沒有引導的,必像葉子一樣墜落。」
"Those who have no guidance fall like leaves."

Περὶ ἐκπεσούσης παρθένου . Παρθένον πάλιν ἔγνων ἐν Ἱεροσολύμοις σακκοφοροῦ σαν ἐπὶ ἑξαετίαν καὶ ἐγκεκλεισμένην , μηδενὸς τῶν εἰς ἡδονὴν συντεινόντων λαμβάνουσαν·
論一位墮落的童貞女。我又認識一位在耶路撒冷的童貞女,她身披麻衣六年之久,閉關隱居,凡能助長享樂之物一概不取;
Concerning a virgin who fell. Again, I knew a virgin in Jerusalem who wore sackcloth for six years and was shut up in seclusion, taking none of the things that minister to pleasure;

她卻陷入了驕傲的墮落。
yet she fell into the fall of pride.

Καὶ ἀνοίξασα τὴν θυρίδα εἰσεδέξατο τὸν ὑπηρετούμενον καὶ αὐτῷ συνεφύρη ἐν τῷ μὴ κατὰ θεϊκὴν πρόθεσιν καὶ ἀγάπην θεοῦ ἐσχηκέναι τὴν ἄσκησιν , ἀλλὰ κατὰ σκηνὴν ἀνθρω πίνην , ὅ ἐστι κενοδοξίας καὶ σαθρᾶς προαιρέσεως
她打開窗戶,讓那服事她的人進來,與他苟合而沾染了污穢——因為她從事苦修並非出於敬虔的目的與對神的愛,乃是出於人的虛飾,就是出於虛榮心與敗壞的存心。
And opening her window she admitted the one who served her, and joined herself to him in defilement—because she had undertaken her ascetic discipline not according to a godly purpose and the love of God, but according to a human pretence, that is, out of vainglory and a corrupt disposition.

Τῶν γὰρ λογισμῶν αὐτῆς ἀπασχοληθέντων εἰς τὸ καταγινώσ κειν τῶν ἄλλων , οὐκ ἦν ὁ φύλαξ τῆς σωφροσύνης
因為她的心思既被論斷別人所佔據,便沒有守護她貞潔的看守了。
For since her thoughts were taken up with condemning others, there was no guardian of her chastity.

Concerning Elias. There was a certain ascetic named Elias who was exceedingly a lover of virgins;

εἰσὶ γὰρ τοιαῦται ψυχαὶ αἷς μαρτυρεῖ τὸ τέλος κατὰ ἀρετήν
因為確有這樣的靈魂,他們的結局見證了他們的美德。
for there are such souls whose end bears witness to their virtue.

他憐憫那些女苦修者的群體,因他在阿特里貝城頗有資產,便建造了一座大修道院,把所有四處漂泊的女子聚集到修道院裡,照著她們的需要妥善照料,為她們設下一切的安歇之處,又有園子、禮拜堂以及生活所需的一切。
He, taking pity on the order of female ascetics, having means in the city of Athribis, built a great monastery and gathered all the wandering women into the monastery, caring for them accordingly, providing them with every comfort—gardens and oratories and whatever life requires.

既然他必須既聽斷她們的糾紛、又使她們和睦——因他聚集了約三百人——他便不得不充當調解人達兩年之久。
Since therefore it was necessary for him both to hear their disputes and to make peace—for he had gathered about three hundred of them—he was obliged to act as mediator for two years.

Being young in age—for he was about thirty or forty years old—this man was tempted by desire;

καὶ ἀναχωρήσας τοῦ μοναστηρίου νῆστις ἐπλανᾶτο ἀνὰ τὴν ἔρημον ἐπὶ ἡμέρας δύο , τοῦτο δεόμενος ὅτι Κύριε , ἢ ἀπόκτεινόν με ἵνα μὴ ἴδω αὐτὰς θλιβομένας , ἢ τὸ πάθος μου λαβὲ ἵνα φροντίζω αὐτῶν κατὰ λόγον
他便離開修道院,禁食在曠野中漂泊了兩天,如此祈求說:「主啊,求你或是殺了我,免得我看見她們受苦,或是除去我的情慾,使我能合宜地照顧她們。」
and withdrawing from the monastery, fasting, he wandered through the desert for two days, praying thus: "Lord, either kill me, that I may not see them in distress, or take away my passion, that I may care for them reasonably."

Ἑσπέρας οὖν γενομένης ὕπνωσεν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ καὶ ἐλθόντες πρὸς αὐτὸν ἄγγελοι τρεῖς , ὡς αὐτὸς διηγεῖτο , κατέσχον αὐτὸν καὶ λέγουσι·

So when evening came he slept in the desert, and three angels came to him, as he himself related, took hold of him and said:

"Well then, if we free you from your passion, will you go back and care for them?" To this he agreed.

Then they took hold of him, one by the hands and one by the feet, and the third, taking a razor, cut off his testicles—not in reality, but in a vision.

Ἔδοξεν οὖν τῇ ἐκστάσει , ὡς ἂν εἴποι τις , καὶ ἀποτεθεραπεῦσθαι

So it seemed to him in his ecstasy, as one might say, that he had even been completely cured.

Καὶ ὑποστρέψας μετὰ πέντε ἡμέρας πενθοῦντος τοῦ μοναστηρίου εἰσῆλθε καὶ ἔνδον ἔμεινεν ἔκτοτε ἐν κελλίῳ πλαγίῳ , ἐξ οὗ ἐγγύτερος ὢν συνεχῶς αὐτὰς διωρθοῦτο τὸ ὅσον ἐπ' αὐτῷ
過了五天他便回去,那時修道院正在哀悼,他進去後,從此就住在裡面一間旁邊的小室中,他因住得更近,便盡其所能地不斷糾正她們。
And returning after five days, while the monastery was in mourning, he entered and from then on remained within in a side cell, from which, being nearer, he continually set them right as far as it lay in his power.

他又活了四十年,向眾教父確證說:「我心中再無情慾興起。」
And he lived another forty years, assuring the fathers that "No passion arises in my mind."

他無法住在修道院之內,便把自己關在一間樓上的屋子裡,開了一扇可望向女修道院的窗戶,時開時關;
who, being unable to remain within the monastery itself, shut himself up in an upper room and made a window looking out toward the monastery of the women, which he would open and close;

ἀδιαλείπτως οὖν παρεκαθέζετο τῇ θυρίδι τὴν ἀμαχίαν αὐταῖς μνη στευόμενος
他就這樣不住地坐在窗前,為她們調解紛爭、促成和睦。
and so he would sit continually by the window, mediating peace among them.

And in this way he grew old up there in the upper room, neither the women coming up nor he being able to go down.

Concerning Piamoun. Piamoun was a virgin who lived all the years of her life with her own mother, eating only every other day in the evening and spinning flax.

「但你若願憐恤全村和你自己的家,就請你親自出去迎見他們。」
"But if you would show mercy upon the whole village and upon your own house, go out yourself and meet them."

她不肯如此行,夜間便上到自己的小屋裡,整夜站著禱告,不曾屈膝,懇求神說:「審判全地的主啊,凡不義的事都不蒙你喜悅;願這禱告達到你面前時,你的大能把他們釘牢在大能臨到他們的那地方。」
She, not consenting to this, went up into her own little room at night and stood praying throughout, not bending the knee, and beseeching God: "Lord who judges the earth, to whom nothing of the unjust is pleasing, when this prayer comes to you, let your power nail them fast to the place wherever it overtakes them."

然而要把繁重的工作分派給那些較強壯、也吃得多的人,把輕省的工作分派給那些較軟弱、也較克苦的人。
Assign, however, the heavy tasks to the stronger who also eat, and the light tasks to the weaker and more ascetic.

你要把伊歐塔分給那些較單純、較無詭詐的人,把克西分給那些較難相處、較乖僻的人。
And to the simpler and more guileless you shall assign the iota, but to the more difficult and more crooked you shall apply the xi.

Καὶ οὕτως κατ' ἀναλογίαν τῆς καταστάσεως τῶν προαιρέσεων καὶ τῶν τρόπων καὶ τῶν βίων , ἑκάστῳ τάγματι τὸ στοιχεῖον ἐφήρ μοσε , μόνων τῶν πνευματικῶν εἰδότων τὰ σημαινόμενα
他就這樣按各人心志、性情與生活的光景,為每一班次配上相稱的字母,惟有屬靈的人才曉得其中的含義。
And thus, in proportion to the condition of their dispositions and characters and ways of life, he fitted the letter to each order, only the spiritual ones knowing what was signified.

Ἐγέγραπτο δὲ ἐν τῇ δέλτῳ ὅτι Ξένος ἄλλου μοναστη ρίου ἄλλον ἔχοντος τύπον μὴ συμφάγῃ τούτοις , μὴ συμπίῃ , μὴ εἰσέλθῃ εἰς τὴν μονὴν ἐκτὸς εἰ μὴ ἐν ὁδῷ εὑρεθῇ
銅版上又寫著:「凡來自另一座有不同規矩之修道院的外人,不可與這些人同吃,不可與他們同喝,也不可進入這修道院;除非他是在路途中遇見的。」
It was written in the tablet that: "A stranger from another monastery which has a different rule shall not eat with these, nor drink with them, nor enter into the monastery—unless he be found on a journey."

Τὸν μέντοι εἰσελθόντα συμμεῖναι αὐτοῖς ἐπὶ τριετίαν εἴσω τῶν ἀδύτων οὐ δέχονται·
至於那進來要與他們同住的人,在頭三年之內,他們不准他進入內院;
The one who enters to remain with them for three years, however, they do not receive within the inner precincts;

ἀλλ' ἐργατικώτερα ἔργα ποιήσας , οὕτως εἰσβαίνει μετὰ τριετίαν
他要先作較粗重的工作,三年之後才得進入。
but having performed the more laborious works, thus he enters after three years.

Ἐσθίοντες δὲ τὰς κεφαλὰς καλυπτέτωσαν τοῖς κουκουλίοις ἵνα μὴ ἀδελφὸς ἀδελφὸν μασώμενον ἴδῃ
他們吃飯時,要用風帽遮蓋頭臉,免得弟兄看見弟兄咀嚼。
When they eat, let them cover their heads with the cowls, so that a brother may not see a brother chewing.

Οὐκ ἔστι λαλῆσαι ἐσθίοντα , οὐδὲ ἐκτὸς τοῦ πίνακος ἢ τῆς τραπέζης ἀλλαχοῦ προσέχειν τῷ ὀφθαλμῷ
吃飯時不可說話,眼目也不可注視盤子或桌子以外之處。
It is not permitted to speak while eating, nor to direct the eye anywhere else beyond the platter or the table.

Ἐτύπωσε δὲ διὰ πάσης τῆς ἡμέρας ποιεῖν αὐτοὺς εὐχὰς δώδεκα , καὶ ἐν τῷ λυχνικῷ δώδεκα , καὶ ἐν ταῖς παννυχίσι δώδεκα , καὶ ἐννάτην ὥραν τρεῖς·
他又定規,他們在整日之間要作十二次禱告,在點燈時作十二次,在守夜時作十二次,在第九時辰作三次;
He laid down that they should make throughout the whole day twelve prayers, and at the lamp-lighting twelve, and in the night-vigils twelve, and at the ninth hour three;

ὅτε δὲ μέλλει τὸ πλῆθος ἐσθίειν ἑκάστῃ εὐχῇ ψαλμὸν προᾴ δεσθαι τυπώσας
並定規當眾人將要進食時,每次禱告之前都要先唱一首詩篇。
and when the multitude is about to eat, he laid down that a psalm should be sung before each prayer.

ἀγγέλῳ ὅτι ὀλίγαι εἰσὶν αἱ εὐχαί , λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ ἄγγελος·

When [he objected] to the angel that the prayers were few, the angel said to him:

「我這樣定規,是為叫那些軟弱的人也能完成這規矩,不致灰心難過。
"I appointed these so that even the little ones might be able to complete the rule and not be grieved.

Οἱ δὲ τέλειοι νομοθεσίας χρείαν οὐκ ἔχουσι·
至於那完全的人,無需立規約束;
But the perfect have no need of legislation;

καθ' ἑαυτοὺς γὰρ ἐν ταῖς κέλλαις ὅλον ἑαυτῶν τὸ ζῆν τῇ τοῦ θεοῦ θεωρίᾳ παρεχώρησαν
因為他們在自己的單房中,已將一生完全獻給對神的默觀了。」
for by themselves in their cells they have given over the whole of their living to the contemplation of God."

Τούτοις δὲ ἐνομο θέτησα ὅσοι οὐκ ἔχουσι νοῦν ἐπιγνώμονα , ἵνα κἂν ὡς οἰκέ ται τὴν σύνταξιν πληροῦντες τῆς πολιτείας διατεθῶσιν ἐν παρρησίᾳ
「我為這些人立規,就是那些沒有明辨之心的人,好使他們即或像家僕一般謹守這修行生活的條例,也能存著坦然的心。」
"But for these I have legislated—as many as do not have a discerning mind—that even as household servants fulfilling the order of the rule of life, they may be brought to a confident bearing."

Ἔστιν οὖν ταῦτα τὰ μοναστήρια πλείονα κρατήσαντα τοῦτον τὸν τύπον , συντείνοντα εἰς ἑπτακισχιλίους ἄνδρας
因此,有許多這樣的修道院都遵守這個範式,總數達到約七千人。
There are, then, these monasteries—many of them holding to this pattern—amounting to seven thousand men.

Ἔστι δὲ τὸ πρῶτον καὶ μέγα μοναστήριον ἔνθα αὐτὸς ὁ Παχώμιος ᾤκει , τὸ καὶ τὰ ἄλλα ἀποκυῆσαν μοναστήρια , ἔχον ἄνδρας χιλίους τριακοσίους
其中有那第一座、也是最大的修道院,就是帕科繆本人所住的,也是其餘各修道院由此而出的母院,住有一千三百人。
And there is the first and great monastery, where Pachomius himself dwelt, the one which gave birth also to the other monasteries, having thirteen hundred men.

Ἐν οἷς καὶ ὁ καλὸς Ἀφθόνιος ὁ φίλος μου γενόμενος γνήσιος , τὸ νῦν δευτερεύων ἐν τῷ μοναστηρίῳ·
其中也有那良善的阿夫多紐,他成了我真誠的朋友,如今在那修道院中居於次位;
Among whom was also the good Aphthonius, who became my genuine friend, and who is now second-in-command in the monastery;

他們因他無可指摘,便差他往亞歷山大去,售賣他們所製的物件,並採買所需的物資。
him, as one who could give no offence, they send to Alexandria to sell their products and to purchase their necessities.

另有一些修道院,各有二百人和三百人;
And there are other monasteries of two hundred and three hundred;

其中我曾進入帕諾波利斯城,在那裡見到三百人。
among which, having entered into the city of Panopolis, I found three hundred men.

[Ἐν τούτῳ τῷ μοναστηρίῳ ἑώρακα ῥάπτας δεκαπέντε , χαλκεῖς ἑπτά , τέκ τονας τέσσαρας , καμηλαρίους δώδεκα , κναφεῖς δεκαπέντε .] Ἐργάζονται δὲ πᾶσαν τέχνην , καὶ ἐκ τῶν περιττευμάτων οἰκονομοῦντες καὶ τὰ τῶν γυναικῶν μοναστήρια καὶ φυλακάς
〔在這修道院裡,我看見有十五個裁縫、七個鐵匠、四個木匠、十二個趕駱駝的、十五個漂洗工。〕他們從事各樣手藝,並用所剩餘的供應女修道院和監牢中的人。
[In this monastery I saw fifteen tailors, seven smiths, four carpenters, twelve camel-drivers, fifteen fullers.] They work at every craft, and out of their surplus they also provide for the women's monasteries and the prisons.

[They also keep pigs;

ἐμοῦ δὲ ψέγοντος τὸ πρᾶγμα , ἔλεγον ὅτι Ἐν τῇ παραδόσει παρελάβομεν ὅτι τρεφέσθωσαν μὲν διὰ τὰ σινιάσματα , διὰ τὰ ἀποκαθα ρίσματα τῶν λαχάνων , διὰ τὰ ῥιπτόμενα περιττώματα , ἵνα μὴ ζημιῶνται
我責備這事時,他們說:「我們從傳統領受的,是要用篩餘的渣滓、蔬菜的削皮和拋棄的廢物來餵養牠們,免得有所浪費。
and when I found fault with the practice, they said: "In the tradition we have received that they are to be fed on the siftings, on the parings of the vegetables, and on the cast-off refuse, so that there be no waste.

Καὶ θυέσθωσαν οἱ χοῖροι , καὶ τὸ κρέας μὲν πιπρασκέσθω , τὰ δὲ ἄκρα τοῖς νοσοῦσι καὶ τοῖς γέρουσιν ἀναλισκέσθωσαν , τῷ μετρίαν εἶναι τὴν χώραν καὶ πολυ άνθρωπον·
豬要被宰殺,肉要賣掉,至於那些四蹄末端,則留給病人和老人食用,因這地方狹小而人口眾多;
And let the pigs be slaughtered, and let the meat be sold, but let the extremities be consumed by the sick and the aged, since the region is small and densely populated;

τὸ γὰρ ἔθνος τῶν Βλεμμύων αὐτοῖς παροικεῖ .]. Ἀναστάντες δὲ οἱ ἐφημερευταὶ ὄρθριοι οἱ μὲν περὶ τὸ μαγειρεῖον οἱ δὲ περὶ τὰς τραπέζας γίνονται
因為布勒米斯人就住在他們附近。」〕當值的弟兄一早起來,有的在廚房裡忙碌,有的在飯桌旁服事。
for the nation of the Blemmyes dwells near them."]. The week-attendants, rising at dawn, busy themselves, some about the kitchen, others about the tables.

他們把飯桌一一擺好,直到所定的時辰,凡事都預備妥當,每張桌上擺上餅、調好的小菜、橄欖、牛乳所製的乾酪、〔那些肉的末端〕和切碎的蔬菜。
They set out the tables, then, until the appointed hour, having arranged everything, placing on each table loaves, prepared relishes, olives, cow's-milk cheeses, [the extremities of the meat,] and finely-cut vegetables.

Εἰσὶν οὖν οἱ εἰσερ χόμενοι ἕκτην ὥραν καὶ ἐσθίοντες , ἄλλοι ἑβδόμην , ἄλλοι ὀγδόην , ἄλλοι ἐννάτην , ἄλλοι ἑνδεκάτην , ἄλλοι ἑσπέραν βαθεῖαν , ἄλλοι διὰ δύο , ὡς ἕκαστον στοιχεῖον τὴν ἰδίαν ὥραν γνωρίζειν
於是有人在第六時辰進來吃,有人在第七時辰,有人在第八時辰,有人在第九時辰,有人在第十一時辰,有人在傍晚很晚的時候,有人隔日才吃,以致每一字母班次都認得自己進食的時辰。
There are, then, those who come in at the sixth hour and eat, others at the seventh, others at the eighth, others at the ninth, others at the eleventh, others late in the evening, others every other day, so that each letter recognizes its own hour.

有的作農夫耕地,有的料理園圃,有的在鐵匠舖,有的在烤餅房,有的在木工房,有的在漂洗房,有的編大筐,有的在硝皮房,有的在製鞋舖,有的在繕寫室,有的編軟席;
one works the land as a farmer, another a garden, another a smithy, another a bakery, another a carpenter's shop, another a fuller's shop, another plaiting the large baskets, another a tannery, another a cobbler's shop, another a calligraphy room, another plaiting the soft mats;

Περὶ τοῦ μοναστηρίου τῶν γυναικῶν . Τούτοις ἔστι καὶ μοναστήριον γυναικῶν ὡς τετρακοσίων , τὴν αὐτὴν ἔχον διατύπωσιν , τὴν αὐτὴν πο λιτείαν , ἐκτὸς τῆς μηλωτῆς·
論女修道院。他們也有一座女修道院,約有四百人,遵守相同的規條、相同的生活方式,惟獨沒有那山羊皮披肩;
Concerning the monastery of the women. They have also a monastery of women, about four hundred, having the same ordinance, the same way of life, except for the goatskin cloak;

καὶ αἱ μὲν γυναῖκες πέραν τοῦ ποταμοῦ , οἱ δὲ ἄνδρες ἀντιπέρα
婦女們住在河的那一邊,男子們住在對岸。
and the women are on the far side of the river, but the men on the side opposite.

Ὅταν οὖν τελευ τήσῃ παρθένος , ἐνταφιάσασαι αὐτὴν αἱ παρθένοι φέρουσι καὶ τιθέασι παρὰ τὴν ὄχθην τοῦ ποταμοῦ·
因此,當一位童貞女離世時,眾童貞女就為她殮葬,把她抬來放在河岸邊;
When, then, a virgin dies, the virgins, having laid her out for burial, carry her and place her beside the bank of the river;

περάσαντες δὲ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ μετὰ πορθμείου , μετὰ βαίων καὶ κλάδων ἐλαιῶν , μετὰ ψαλμῳδίας φέρουσιν αὐτὴν εἰς τὸ πέραν , θάπτοντες εἰς τὰ ἴδια μνήματα
弟兄們便乘渡船過河,拿著棕枝和橄欖枝,唱著詩歌,把她抬過對岸,葬在他們自己的墳墓裡。
and the brethren, having crossed over by ferry, with palm-branches and olive boughs, with psalmody, carry her across to the other side, burying her in their own tombs.

Παρεκτὸς μέντοι τοῦ πρεσβυτέρου καὶ τοῦ διακόνου οὐδεὶς περᾷ εἰς τὸ μοναστήριον τῶν γυναικῶν , καὶ τοῦτο κατὰ κυριακήν
然而除了長老和執事以外,無人得渡到女修道院去,而這也只在主日進行。
Except for the presbyter and the deacon, however, no one crosses over to the monastery of the women, and this only on the Lord's Day.

In this monastery of the women there happened an affair of this kind:

ῥάπτης κοσμικὸς περάσας κατὰ ἄγνοιαν ἐζήτει ἔργον·
有一個世俗的裁縫因不知情而渡了過來,要找工作;
a worldly tailor, having crossed over in ignorance, was seeking work;
1:978⧉ ⤴︎
καὶ ἐξελθοῦσα νεωτέρα μία , ἔρημος γάρ ἐστιν ὁ τόπος , συνέτυχεν αὐτῷ ἀκουσίως καὶ δέδωκεν αὐτῷ ἀπό κρισιν ὅτι Ἡμεῖς ἔχομεν ἡμετέρους ῥάπτας
有一位年輕的修女出來(因那地方僻靜無人),無意中遇見了他,便回覆他說:「我們自己有裁縫。」
and one of the younger women came out—for the place is deserted—and met him by chance, and gave him the answer that: "We have our own tailors."

Ἄλλη ἑωρακυῖα τὴν συντυχίαν , χρόνου παρελθόντος καὶ γενο μένης μάχης , ἐξ ὑπονοίας διαβολικῆς ἀπὸ πολλῆς πονη ρίας καὶ ζέσεως θυμοῦ , ἐσυκοφάντησε ταύτην ἐπὶ τῆς ἀδελφότητος·
另一位修女看見了這次相遇,過了些時候起了爭吵,便出於魔鬼的猜疑、滿了惡毒和沸騰的怒氣,在眾姊妹面前誣告她;
Another, having seen the encounter, after time had passed and a quarrel had arisen, out of a diabolical suspicion, from much wickedness and a boiling of anger, slandered her before the sisterhood;

ᾗ συνέδραμον καὶ ἄλλαι ὀλίγαι τῇ κακίᾳ
另有幾個人也一同附和這惡行。
and a few others also ran together with her in the malice.
1:981⧉ ⤴︎
Ἀπολυπηθεῖσα οὖν ἐκείνη ὡς ὑποστᾶσα τοιαύτην συκο φαντίαν τὴν μήτε εἰς ἔννοιαν αὐτῆς ἐλθοῦσαν , καὶ μὴ ἐνεγ κοῦσα ἔβαλεν ἑαυτὴν εἰς τὸν ποταμὸν λάθρα καὶ ἐτε λεύτησεν
那位被誣告的修女極其憂傷,因她蒙受了這樣的誣陷,那是她連想都未曾想過的事,她忍受不住,便暗暗投河而死。
That one, then, being deeply grieved, as having suffered such a slander—one which had never even come into her mind—and unable to bear it, secretly threw herself into the river and died.

Ἐλ θόντι οὖν τῷ πρεσβυτέρῳ ἀνήγγειλαν τὸ πρᾶγμα αἱ λοιπαὶ ἀδελφαί·
長老來到時,其餘的姊妹就把這事報告給他;
When the presbyter came, then, the remaining sisters reported the matter to him;

καὶ ἐκέλευσε τούτων μὲν μηδὲ μιᾶς προσφορὰν ἐπιτελεσθῆναι·
他便吩咐不可為這幾人中的任何一個舉行祭獻;
and he commanded that the offering be celebrated for not even one of these;

τὰς δὲ μὴ εἰρηνευσάσας αὐτάς , ὡς συνει δυίας τῇ συκοφαντησάσῃ καὶ πιστευσάσας τοῖς εἰρημένοις , ἑπταετίαν ἀφώρισεν ἀκοινωνήτους ποιήσας
至於那些不肯與她們和好、且與那誣告者同謀、又信了那些話的人,他就把她們隔絕七年,使她們不得領聖餐。
but those who had not made peace with them, as being privy to the slanderer and as having believed what was said, he set apart for seven years, making them excommunicate.

Περὶ τῆς ὑποκρινομένης μωρίαν . Ἐν τούτῳ τῷ μοναστηρίῳ ἄλλη γέγονε παρθένος ὑποκρινομένη μωρίαν καὶ δαίμονα·
論那佯裝痴愚的修女。在這修道院裡有另一位童貞女,她佯裝痴愚、假作被鬼附;
Concerning her who feigned folly. In this monastery there was another virgin who feigned folly and demon-possession;

καὶ ἐπὶ τοσοῦτον αὐτὴν ἐβδελύξαντο ὡς μηδὲ συνεσθίειν αὐτῇ , τοῦτο ἐκείνης αἱρη σαμένης
眾人厭惡她到一個地步,連飯也不肯與她同吃,而這正是她自己所揀選的。
and they so loathed her that they would not even eat with her, this being her own choice.

Ἀλωμένη οὖν ἀνὰ τὸ μαγειρεῖον πᾶσαν ἐποίει ὑπηρεσίαν , καὶ ἦν , τὸ δὴ λεγόμενον , σπόγγος τῆς μονῆς , ἔργῳ πληροῦσα τὸ γεγραμμένον·
她在廚房四圍打雜,作各樣卑賤的服事,正如俗話所說,她是這院子的「抹布」,以行為應驗了所記的話:
Wandering about the kitchen, then, she performed every menial service, and she was, as the saying goes, the sponge of the convent, fulfilling in deed that which is written:

Εἴ τις δοκεῖ σοφὸς εἶναι ἐν ἡμῖν ἐν τῷ αἰῶνι τούτῳ μωρὸς γενέσθω ἵνα γένηται σοφός
「我們中間若有人在這世代自以為有智慧,倒不如變作愚拙,好成為有智慧的。」
"If anyone among us thinks himself wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise."

Αὕτη ῥάκος ἐπὶ τῆς κεφαλῆς δήσασα –αἱ γὰρ ἄλλαι πᾶσαί εἰσι κεκαρμέναι , ἔχουσαι κουκούλια –οὕτως ἦν ὑπηρετοῦσα
她在頭上纏了一塊破布(因其餘眾人都剃了髮,戴著風帽),就這樣服事。
She, having bound a rag upon her head—for all the others are shorn, having cowls—thus was serving.

Ταύτην μασωμένην οὐκ εἶδεν οὐδεμία τῶν τετρακοσίων τὰ ἔτη τῆς ζωῆς αὐτῆς·
在她一生的歲月中,那四百人中沒有一個看見過這婦人咀嚼;
None of the four hundred saw this woman chewing all the years of her life;

ἐπὶ τραπέζης οὐκ ἐκαθέσθη , οὐ κλάσματος μετέλαβεν ἄρτου , ἀλλὰ τὰς ψῖχας σπογγίζουσα τῶν τραπεζῶν καὶ τὰς χύτρας περι πλύνουσα τούτοις ἠρκεῖτο·
她從未坐席,也未曾嚐過一塊餅,只用桌上的碎屑和涮鍋的剩水充飢,便以此為足;
she never sat at table, nor partook of a morsel of bread, but wiping up the crumbs of the tables and washing out the pots, with these she was content;

她從未辱罵過人,從未發過怨言,無論大小事都未曾開口,雖然她屢遭拳打、辱罵、咒詛和憎嫌。
never having insulted anyone, never having grumbled, never having spoken little or much, although she was cuffed and insulted and cursed and abhorred.

Παρέστη οὖν ἄγγελος τῷ ἁγίῳ Πιτηροῦμ ἐν τῷ Πορφυρίτῃ καθεζομένῳ ἀναχωρητῇ ἀνδρὶ δοκιμωτάτῳ , καὶ λέγει αὐτῷ·

An angel appeared, then, to the holy Piteroum, an anchorite sitting in the Porphyrite, a most approved man, and said to him:

Καὶ ὁ μηδέποτε ἐξελθὼν ἀπῆλθεν ἕως τοῦ μοναστηρίου ἐκείνου , καὶ παρακαλεῖ τοὺς διδασκάλους εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὸ μοναστήριον τῶν γυναικῶν
那向來未曾外出的人就動身往那修道院去,並懇求那些教導者准他進入女修道院。
And he who had never gone out departed to that monastery, and entreated the teachers to let him enter into the monastery of the women.

Ἐκεῖνοι ὡς ἐπίδοξον καὶ γεγηρακότα ἐθάρρησαν αὐτὸν εἰσαγαγεῖν
他們因他德高望重又年邁,便放膽帶他進去。
They, since he was esteemed and aged, took courage to bring him in.

Καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἐπεζήτησε πάσας ἰδεῖν
他進去後,便要求見她們眾人。
And having entered, he sought to see them all.

Μίαν ἔχομεν σαλὴν ἔνδον ἐν τῷ μαγειρείῳ·
「我們有一個瘋女子在廚房裡,」
"We have one madwoman within in the kitchen,"

οὕτω γὰρ καλοῦσι τὰς πα σχούσας
他們是這樣稱呼那些受患的人。
for so they call those who are afflicted.

αὕτη οὐχ ὑπήκουσεν , ἴσως αἰσθομένη τοῦ πράγματος , ἢ καὶ ἀποκαλυφθεῖσα
她不肯前來,或許是察覺了這事,或許是已蒙了啟示。
She did not obey, perhaps perceiving the matter, or even having had it revealed to her.

Σύρουσι βίᾳ καὶ λέγουσιν αὐτῇ·

They drag her by force and say to her:

When she came, then, he beheld the rag upon her forehead, and falling at her feet he said to her:

They were all amazed and said to him:

αὕτη γὰρ καὶ ἐμοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν ἀμμᾶς ἐστίν –οὕτως γὰρ καλοῦσι τὰς πνευματικάς·
「因為她是我和你們眾人的『母親』」——因他們是這樣稱呼那些屬靈的婦人的;
"For she is the amma both of me and of you"—for so they call the spiritual women;

καὶ εὔχομαι ἄξιος αὐτῆς εὑρεθῆναι ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως
「我祈求在審判的日子,我能被算為配得上她。」
"and I pray that I may be found worthy of her in the day of judgment."

Ἀκούσασαι ταῦτα ἔπεσον αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς πόδας , ἐξομολογούμεναι πᾶσαι διαφόρως·
她們聽見這些話,就俯伏在他腳前,各人以不同的方式認罪;
Hearing these things, they fell at his feet, all confessing in various ways;

ἡ μὲν ὡς τὸ ἀπόπλυμα τοῦ πίνακος ἐπιχέασα αὐτῇ·
一個承認曾把盤子的洗刷水倒在她身上;
one as having poured the dishwater of the platter upon her;

ἄλλη ὡς κονδύλοις ἐπιτριψαμένη·
另一個承認曾用拳頭打她;
another as having struck her with her fists;

ἄλλη ὡς τὴν ῥῖνα αὐτῆς σινα πίσασα·
又一個承認曾把芥末抹在她鼻子上;
another as having mustarded her nose;
1:1014⧉ ⤴︎
καὶ ἁπλῶς πᾶσαι διαφόρους ὕβρεις ἀπήγγειλαν
總而言之,眾人都述說了各樣的凌辱。
and in a word, all reported various insults.

Εὐξάμενος οὖν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν ἀπῆλθε
他便為她們禱告,然後離去。
Having prayed, then, on their behalf, he departed.

Καὶ μεθ' ἡμέρας ὀλίγας μὴ ἐνεγκοῦσα ἐκείνη τὴν δόξαν καὶ τὴν τιμὴν τῶν ἀδελφῶν , καὶ ταῖς ἀπολογίαις βαρυνθεῖσα , ἐξῆλθε τοῦ μοναστηρίου·
過了幾天,那婦人因無法承受眾姊妹的尊敬與推崇,又因她們的賠罪而深感重壓,便走出了修道院;
And after a few days that woman, unable to bear the glory and honour of the sisters, and burdened by their apologies, went out of the monastery;

καὶ ποῦ ἀπῆλθεν , ἢ ποῦ κατέδυ , ἢ πῶς ἐτε λεύτησεν , ἔγνω οὐδείς
至於她往何處去、藏身何方、如何離世,無人知曉。
and where she went, or where she hid herself, or how she died, no one knew.

Concerning John of the city of Lyco. There was a certain John in the city of Lyco, who as a child learned the carpenter's trade;

Ἐς ὕστερον δὲ γενόμενος ὡς ἐτῶν εἰκοσιπέντε ἀπετάξατο·
後來他到了約二十五歲時,便棄絕了世俗;
but afterward, having become about twenty-five years of age, he renounced the world;

καὶ διατρίψας ἐν διαφόροις μοναστηρίοις πέντε ἔτη ἀνεχώ ρησε μόνος εἰς τὸ ὄρος τῆς Λυκώ , εἰς αὐτὴν τὴν ἀκρώ ρειαν ποιήσας ἑαυτῷ τρεῖς θόλους καὶ εἰσελθὼν ἀνῳκο δόμησεν ἑαυτόν
他在各修道院中度過五年之後,便獨自退隱到呂科山去,在那絕頂之處為自己造了三間圓頂的單房,進去後就把自己封閉起來。
and having spent five years in various monasteries, he withdrew alone to the mountain of Lyco, and on the very summit having made for himself three domed cells and entered in, he walled himself up.

Ἦν οὖν ὁ εἷς θόλος εἰς τὰς χρείας τῆς σαρκός , καὶ ὁ εἷς ἔνθα εἰργάζετο καὶ ἤσθιε , καὶ ὁ ἄλλος ἔνθα προσηύχετο
其中一間是供肉身所需之用,一間是他作工和進食之處,另一間是他禱告之處。
Now the one cell was for the necessities of the body, and the one where he worked and ate, and the other where he prayed.

ἔτη ἐγκεκλεισμένος καὶ διὰ θυρίδος λαμβάνων παρὰ τοῦ δια κονοῦντος αὐτῷ τὰς χρείας κατηξιώθη χαρίσματος προρ ρήσεων
他這樣封閉多年,藉著一扇窗戶從服事他的人手中領取所需,後來蒙賜得了預言的恩賜。
Having been shut up for years and receiving through a window from the one who served him his necessities, he was deemed worthy of the gift of prophecy.

Ἐν οἷς καὶ τῷ μακαρίῳ Θεοδοσίῳ τῷ βασιλεῖ διαφόρους ἀπέστειλε προρρήσεις , περί τε Μαξίμου τοῦ τυράννου , ὅτι νικήσας αὐτὸν ὑποστρέψει τῶν Γαλλίων·
其中他曾向蒙福的皇帝狄奧多西傳達多項預言,論到僭主馬克西穆斯,說皇帝必勝過他,從高盧地凱旋而歸;
Among these he sent various prophecies to the blessed emperor Theodosius, concerning Maximus the tyrant, that having conquered him he would return from the Gauls;

他也照樣傳報了論到僭主歐根紐的好消息。
and likewise he brought good tidings concerning Eugenius the tyrant.

Of him there went out a great fame as a virtuous man.

Being, then, in the desert of Nitria, both I and those around the blessed Evagrius, we sought to learn with exactness what the virtue of the man was.

for if I myself am unable to see him, but am able to hear accurately the things of his way of life from another who relates them, I do not go off to the mountain."

but on the next, having shut my cell and committed myself to God, I dragged myself even that far, to the Thebaid.
