1:390
(50) The mind falls from its boldness toward God at the very moment when it becomes a companion of evil or filthy thoughts.
1:391
(五十一)愚昧的人被情慾牽引,當他被忿怒激動攪擾時,便不加思量地急忙逃離弟兄;
(51) The foolish man, led by the passions, when he is moved and disturbed by anger, hastens to flee his brethren without reflection;
1:392
but when again he is inflamed by desire, repenting, he runs back to meet them.
1:393
But the prudent man does the opposite in both cases:
1:394
在忿怒之事上,他斷絕攪擾的根源,使自己脫離對弟兄的憂憤;
in the case of anger, having cut off the causes of disturbance, he frees himself from grief toward his brethren;
1:395
and in the case of desire, he restrains himself from irrational impulse and intercourse.
1:396
(52) In the time of temptations do not leave your monastery, but bear nobly the waves of thoughts, and especially those of grief and listlessness.
1:397
For being thus providentially proved through afflictions, you will have firm hope in God.
1:398
But if you abandon it, you will be found unproved, unmanly, and unstable.
1:399
(五十三)你若願意不從合乎神的愛中墜落,就不可讓弟兄帶著對你的不滿去睡,你自己也不可帶著對他的不滿去睡;
(53) If you wish not to fall from love according to God, neither allow your brother to go to sleep grieved against you, nor go to sleep yourself grieved against him;
1:400
but go, be reconciled to your brother, and coming with a pure conscience offer to Christ, through fervent prayer, the gift of love.
1:401
(54) If he who has all the gifts of the Spirit but has not love profits nothing, according to the divine Apostle,
1:402
we ought to show all diligence that we may acquire it.
1:403
(五十五)若愛不對鄰舍行惡,那麼,那嫉妒弟兄、為他的好名聲憂愁、用譏誚玷污他名譽、或以任何惡意陰謀害他的人——他怎能不使自己與愛隔絕,並招致永遠的審判呢?(五十六)若愛是律法的完全,那麼,那向弟兄懷恨、設詭計陷害他、咒詛他、又因他跌倒而幸災樂禍的人——他怎能不是違背律法的,配受永遠的刑罰呢?(五十七)若譭謗弟兄、論斷弟兄的人,就是譭謗律法、論斷律法;
(55) If love does no evil to one's neighbor, then he who envies his brother and is grieved at his good repute, who stains his reputation with mockery or plots against him with any malice—how does he not estrange himself from love and become liable to eternal judgment? (56) If love is the fulfilment of the law, then he who bears rancor against his brother, devises snares against him, curses him, and rejoices at his fall—how is he not a transgressor and worthy of eternal punishment? (57) If he who speaks against his brother and judges his brother speaks against the law and judges the law;
1:404
而基督的律法就是愛;
and the law of Christ is love;
1:405
how does the slanderer not fall from the love of Christ and become to himself the cause of eternal punishment? (58) Do not lend your ear to the tongue of the slanderer, nor your tongue to the ear of the fault-finder, speaking or hearing with pleasure against your neighbor, lest you fall from divine love and be found a stranger to eternal life.
1:406
(59) Do not accept abuse against your father, nor encourage the one who dishonors him, lest the Lord be angered at your works and destroy you from the land of the living.
1:407
(60) Silence the slanderer in your hearing, lest you commit a double sin along with him—accustoming yourself to a deadly passion, and failing to restrain him from prattling against his neighbor.
1:408
(61) "But I say to you," says the Lord:
1:409
"Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, pray for those who spitefully use you;"
1:410
[He commands this] so that you may love all men equally in imitation of God, who loves all men equally and wills that they be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.
1:411
(六十二)「只是我告訴你們,不要與惡人作對;
(62) "But I say to you, do not resist the evil one;
1:412
有人打你的右臉,連左臉也轉過來由他打;
but whoever strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;
1:413
有人想要告你,要拿你的裡衣,連外衣也由他拿去;
and to him who wishes to sue you and take your tunic, leave him your cloak also;
1:414
and whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two."
1:415
(63) The impassioned images we carry about pertain to the very things we have at some time experienced.
1:416
那麼,凡勝過這些受情慾染污之影像的人,便也全然輕看那些作為影像之根源的事物;
He, then, who overcomes the impassioned images altogether despises also the things of which they are images;
1:417
since the war against memories is the more difficult than the war against things, in proportion as sinning in thought is easier than sinning in deed.
1:418
(64) Of the passions, some are bodily and some pertain to the soul.
1:419
屬身體的情慾,其起因出於身體;
And the bodily ones have their occasions from the body;
1:420
the soul's passions, from external things.
1:421
然而這兩者都藉著愛與節制被斷絕;
But both are cut off by love and self-control;
1:422
(六十五)情慾中,有些屬於靈魂的血氣(忿怒)部分;
(65) Of the passions, some belong to the incensive [part];
1:423
and others to the desiring part of the soul.
1:424
這兩者都藉著感官被激動;
Both are set in motion through the senses;
1:425
and they are set in motion when the soul is found to be without love and self-control.
1:426
Therefore the greater remedy against it, the commandment of love, was given by the Lord.
1:427
(六十七)一切其他的情慾,或附於靈魂的血氣部分,或單附於慾望部分,或也附於理性部分,如同遺忘與無知;
(67) All the other passions attach themselves either to the incensive part of the soul, or to the desiring part alone, or also to the rational part, as do forgetfulness and ignorance;
1:428
唯有怠惰,因抓住靈魂的一切能力,幾乎同時激動所有的情慾;
but listlessness, laying hold of all the powers of the soul, sets in motion almost all the passions together at once;
1:429
wherefore it is the heaviest of all the other passions.
1:430
Well, then, did the Lord give the remedy against it:
1:431
"In your patience," He says, "possess your souls."
1:432
(68) Never strike any of the brethren, especially without reason, lest, being unable to bear the affliction, he depart; and you will never escape the rebuke of conscience, which will always bring you grief in the time of prayer and drive your mind away from divine boldness.
1:433
(六十九)不要容讓那些使你絆跌的猜疑,或那些挑唆你絆跌、敵對某人的人;
(69) Do not endure suspicions or persons that bring you offences against any one;
1:434
for those who admit offences in whatever manner, whether of things happening by choice or against choice, do not know the way of peace, which leads its lovers through love to the knowledge of God.
1:435
(七十)凡仍隨從人的看法、為這個或那個緣故而愛這人、恨那人的人,尚未擁有完全的愛;
(70) He does not yet have perfect love who still conforms himself to the opinions of men, loving this one and hating that one for this or that reason;
1:436
or even loving the same person at one time and hating him at another for the same reasons.
1:437
(七十一)完全的愛,不按人不同的心志去割裂人類那單一的本性,卻常常注視這本性,平等地愛眾人;
(71) Perfect love does not divide up the one nature of men according to their differing dispositions, but, ever looking to it, loves all men equally;
1:438
愛殷勤之人如朋友,愛敗壞之人如仇敵,向他們行善、恆忍,並忍受他們所加給的;
loving the zealous as friends, and the wicked as enemies, doing them good, being long-suffering, and enduring what they bring upon it;
1:439
絕不計算惡,反而在機會臨到時,甚至為他們受苦,好使他們也成為朋友,若是可能的話;
in no way reckoning the evil, but even suffering on their behalf, should the occasion call for it, that it may make even them friends, if it be possible;
1:440
but if not, it does not fall away from its own disposition, ever showing the fruits of love equally toward all men.
1:441
祂向我們顯出祂的愛,為全人類受苦,又平等地將復活的盼望賜給眾人;
Showing His love toward us, He suffered for the whole of mankind and granted to all equally the hope of the resurrection;
1:442
even though each one makes himself worthy either of glory or of punishment.
1:443
(七十二)凡不輕看榮耀與羞辱、富足與貧窮、逸樂與憂愁的人,尚未得著完全的愛;
(72) He who does not despise glory and dishonor, wealth and poverty, pleasure and grief, has not yet acquired perfect love;
1:444
for perfect love despises not only these, but even this transient life itself and death.
1:445
(73) Hear what those who have been counted worthy of perfect love say:
1:446
「誰能使我們與基督的愛隔絕呢?難道是患難麼?是困苦麼?是逼迫麼?是飢餓麼?是赤身露體麼?是危險麼?是刀劍麼?如經上所記:『我們為你的緣故終日被殺;
"Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: For Your sake we are killed all the day long;
1:447
we were accounted as sheep for the slaughter."
1:448
"But in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
1:449
For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
1:450
And concerning love toward God, all the saints are such, both in word and in deed.
1:451
(74) And concerning love toward one's neighbor, hear again what they say.
1:452
「我在基督裡說真話,並不謊言,有我良心被聖靈感動,給我作見證;
"I tell the truth in Christ, I do not lie, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,
1:453
that I have great grief and continual sorrow in my heart.
1:454
For I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh, who are Israelites."
1:455
Likewise also Moses and the rest of the saints.
1:456
(七十五)凡不輕看榮耀與逸樂、並那助長這些、又因這些而生之貪財的人,便不能斷絕忿怒的根源;
(75) He who does not despise glory and pleasure, and the love of money which fosters these and is constituted on their account, cannot cut off the occasions of anger;
1:457
and he who does not cut these off cannot attain to perfect love.
1:458
(七十六)謙卑與勞苦使人脫離一切罪;
(76) Humility and hardship free a man from all sin;
1:459
the latter cutting off the passions of the body, [the former those of the soul].
1:460
"Look upon my humiliation and my toil, and forgive all my sins."
1:461
and through the divine doctrines He grants them the illumination of knowledge.
1:462
(78) All doctrines concern either God, or visible and invisible things, or the providence and judgment in them.
1:463
(七十九)施捨醫治靈魂的血氣(忿怒)部分;
(79) Almsgiving heals the incensive part of the soul;
1:464
禁食使慾望部分枯萎;
fasting withers the desiring part;
1:465
and prayer purifies the mind and prepares it for the contemplation of the things that are.
1:466
For the Lord has bestowed the commandments on us in accordance with the powers of the soul.
1:467
(80) "Learn from Me," He says, "that I am meek and lowly in heart," and what follows.
1:468
柔和使血氣(忿怒)部分不受攪擾;
Meekness keeps the incensive part undisturbed;
1:469
and humility frees the mind from conceit and vainglory.
1:470
其一〔敬畏〕由刑罰的威嚇在我們裡面所生,因著它,節制、忍耐、對神的盼望,以及無情慾(愛由此而出)便按次序在我們裡面生發;
the one [fear] which is engendered in us from the threats of punishment, on account of which self-control, patience, hope in God, and dispassion (from which comes love) arise in us in due order;
1:471
and the other [fear] which is conjoined with love itself, ever producing reverence in the soul, lest through the boldness of love it come to contempt of God.
1:472
(八十二)至於頭一種敬畏,完全的愛將它從擁有此愛的靈魂中逐出,使靈魂不再懼怕刑罰;
(82) The first fear perfect love casts out of the soul that has acquired it, so that it no longer fears punishment;
1:473
but the second it ever keeps conjoined with itself, as has been said.
1:474
And to the first fear belong the words:
1:475
"By the fear of the Lord everyone turns away from evil," and:
1:476
"The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom."
1:477
"The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever and ever," and:
1:478
"There is no want to those who fear Him."
1:479
(83) "Therefore put to death your members which are upon the earth:
1:480
fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness," and what follows.
1:481
他以「地」稱呼肉體的思念;
By "earth" he named the mind of the flesh;
1:482
以「淫亂」指行為上的罪;
by "fornication" he meant sin in act;
1:483
以「污穢」稱呼〔對罪的〕應允;
by "uncleanness" he called assent [to sin];
1:484
以「邪情」稱呼受情慾染污的念頭;
by "passion" he named the impassioned thought;
1:485
以「惡慾」指對慾望之念頭的單純接納;
by "evil desire" he meant the mere acceptance of the thought of desire;
1:486
and by "covetousness" he named the matter that begets and fosters the passion.
1:487
All these, then, as being members of the mind of the flesh, the divine Apostle commanded to be put to death.
1:488
(八十四)首先,記憶將那赤裸的念頭帶到心思前;
(84) First the memory brings the bare thought to the mind;
1:489
這念頭一逗留,便激動情慾;
and this, lingering, sets the passion in motion;
1:490
情慾若不被除去,便使心思屈從而應允;
and this, not being done away with, bends the mind to assent;
1:491
and this having come to pass, it proceeds at last to sin in act.
1:492
因此,全智的使徒寫信給外邦人時,吩咐先除去罪的結果;
Therefore the all-wise Apostle, writing to those from among the Gentiles, commands first to do away with the effect of sin;
1:493
then, retracing the order step by step, to come back to the cause.
1:494
And the cause is the begetting and fostering covetousness of the passion, as was said before.
1:495
And here I think he signifies gluttony, as being the mother and nurse of fornication.
1:496
因為貪婪不僅在錢財上是惡,在食物上也是惡;
For covetousness is evil not only in money, but also in food;
1:497
just as self-control is good not only in food, but also in money.
1:498
(八十五)正如一隻腳被縛住的小鳥,剛起飛便被繩子拉扯,墜回地面;
(85) Just as a small bird, bound by the foot, when it begins to fly is dragged back to the earth, pulled down by the cord;
1:499
so also the mind, not yet having acquired dispassion, when it flies up toward the knowledge of heavenly things, is dragged down to the earth, pulled back by the passions.
1:500
(86) When the mind is perfectly freed from the passions, then it journeys without turning back toward the contemplation of the things that are, making its way toward the knowledge of the Holy Trinity.
1:501
(八十七)心思若是純潔,便領受萬物的觀念,被引向對它們的屬靈默觀;
(87) Being pure, the mind, taking up the concepts of things, is moved to their spiritual contemplation;
1:502
but having become impure through negligence, it imagines the concepts of other things as bare, while as for human matters, receiving them, it is turned to shameful or evil thoughts.
1:503
(88) When in the time of prayer no concept of the things of the world ever disturbs the mind, then know that you are not outside the bounds of dispassion.
1:504
(89) When the soul begins to perceive its own health, then it begins also to see the images in sleep as bare and untroubled.
1:505
(九十)正如可見之物的美吸引肉眼歸向自己,照樣,對不可見之物的認識也吸引純潔的心思歸向自己;
(90) Just as the beauty of visible things draws the sensible eye to itself, so also the knowledge of invisible things draws the pure mind to itself;
1:506
and by "invisible" I mean the incorporeal.
1:507
(九十一)不受事物所動,乃是一件大事;
(91) It is a great thing not to be affected by things;
1:508
but it is far greater to remain dispassionate toward their images.
1:509
(92) He who has set the virtues aright and grown rich in knowledge, as one who henceforth sees things according to nature, does and speaks all things according to right reason, in no way being turned aside.
1:510
For according as we use things reasonably or unreasonably, we become either virtuous or wicked.
1:511
(93) It is a sign of utmost dispassion that the bare concepts of things ever rise up to the heart, both when the body is awake and during sleep.
1:512
並藉著對可見之物的屬靈默觀,〔使心思脫離〕對事物受情慾染污的觀念;
and through the spiritual contemplation of visible things, [it frees the mind from] the impassioned concepts of things;
1:513
藉著對不可見之物的認識,〔使它脫離〕對可見之物的默觀;
and through the knowledge of invisible things, [it frees it from] the contemplation of visible things;
1:514
and this, through the knowledge of the Holy Trinity.
1:515
(九十五)正如太陽升起、光照世界,既顯明自己,也顯明被它光照的萬物;
(95) Just as the sun, rising and illumining the world, shows both itself and the things illumined by it;
1:516
so also the Sun of righteousness, rising upon the pure mind, shows both Himself and the principles of all things made and to be made by Him.
1:517
(九十六)我們認識神,不是從祂的本質,乃是從祂作為的宏偉,以及祂對萬有的眷顧;
(96) We do not know God from His essence, but from the magnificence of His works and His providence over the things that are;
1:518
for through these, as through mirrors, we perceive His infinite goodness, wisdom, and power.
1:519
(97) The pure mind is found either in the bare concepts of human affairs, or in the natural contemplation of visible things, or in that of invisible things, or in the light of the Holy Trinity.
1:520
(98) Coming to be in the contemplation of visible things, the mind either searches out their natural principles, or those signified through them, or seeks the cause itself.
1:521
(99) Dwelling in the contemplation of invisible things, it seeks both their natural principles and the cause of their coming into being, and the things following upon these, and what is the providence and judgment concerning them.
1:522
(一百)心思進入神裡面時,便先尋求論到祂本質的原理,被渴慕之情點燃;然而它在那論及祂本質的事上得不著安慰;
(100) Coming to be in God, it seeks first the principles concerning His essence, being inflamed by longing; yet it finds no consolation from the things pertaining to Him;
1:523
for this is impossible and inadmissible alike to every created nature.
1:524
But it is consoled by the things pertaining to Him—I mean those concerning His eternity, infinity, and boundlessness, His goodness, wisdom, and power which creates, provides for, and judges the things that are.
1:525
And this alone of Him is wholly comprehensible: His infinity.
1:526
and he who prays utterly without distraction, this one also genuinely loves God.
1:527
然而凡將心思定睛於任何屬地之物的人,便不能無分心地禱告;
But he does not pray without distraction who has his mind fixed upon any earthly thing;
1:528
therefore he does not love God who has his mind bound to any earthly thing.
1:529
(二)心思若逗留在某可感之物上,便必對它存著情慾,如慾望、憂愁、忿怒、或懷恨;
(2) The mind that lingers over some sensible thing assuredly has a passion toward it, such as desire, or grief, or anger, or rancor;
1:530
and unless it despises that thing, it cannot be freed from that passion.
1:531
(三)情慾若轄制心思,便將它捆綁於物質之物;
(3) The passions, gaining mastery over the mind, bind it to material things;
1:532
and separating it from God, they make it occupy itself with these.
1:533
But the love of God, gaining mastery, looses it from the bonds, persuading it to despise not only sensible things, but even this transient life of ours.
1:534
(四)使萬物的觀念成為赤裸的,乃是命令的工作;
(4) It is the work of the commandments to make bare the concepts of things;
1:535
使心思成為非物質、無形相的,乃是閱讀與默觀的工作;
and of reading and contemplation, to render the mind immaterial and formless;
1:536
and from this it comes about that one prays without distraction.
1:537
lest also various spiritual contemplations succeed one another in it.
1:538
因為前者只使心思脫離放縱與仇恨,後者卻也使它脫離遺忘與無知;
For the former frees the mind only from intemperance and hatred, but the latter deliver it also from forgetfulness and ignorance;
1:539
and thus one will be able to pray as one ought.
1:540
(6) Of pure prayer there are two highest states:
1:541
the one befalling those given to the active life, the other those given to contemplation.
1:542
前者由敬畏神與美好的盼望,在靈魂中生發;
And the one arises in the soul from the fear of God and good hope;
1:543
the other from divine eros and the highest purification.
1:544
頭一種程度的記號是:將心思從世上一切觀念中向內收聚,又像神自己親臨身旁那樣——祂實在是親臨的——無分心、不受攪擾地禱告;
The marks of the first measure are: to gather the mind inwardly from all the concepts of the world, and to make one's prayers without distraction or disturbance, as though God Himself were present beside it—as indeed He is;
1:545
and of the second: that in the very impulse of prayer the mind is caught up by the divine and infinite light, and perceives utterly nothing either of itself or of anything else that exists, except only Him who through love works such illumination in it.
1:546
Then also, being moved concerning the principles pertaining to God, it receives pure and clear impressions concerning Him.
1:547
(七)人所愛的,他必定也緊緊持守,並輕看一切攔阻他得著它的,免得被奪去;
(7) Whatever one loves, that he assuredly also clings to, and despises all that hinders him from it, lest he be deprived of it;
1:548
and he who loves God takes care for pure prayer, and casts out from himself every passion that hinders him from it.
1:549
(八)凡驅除了自愛——情慾之母——的人,便靠著神的幫助,輕易地也卸下其餘的,如忿怒、憂愁、懷恨等;
(8) He who has cast out self-love, the mother of the passions, easily, with God's help, lays aside the rest also, such as anger, grief, rancor, and the rest;
1:550
but he who is mastered by the former is wounded by the latter, even against his will.
1:551
And self-love is the passion toward the body.
1:552
或是為神的緣故〔而愛〕,如有德的人〔愛〕眾人,又如人愛有德之人,縱然自己尚未有德;
such as either for God's sake, as the virtuous man [loves] all, and as one loves the virtuous man even if he is not yet virtuous;
1:553
或是因著本性,如父母愛兒女,兒女愛父母;
or by reason of nature, as parents love their children and the reverse;
1:554
或是因著虛榮,如受讚揚的人愛那讚揚他的人;
or by reason of vainglory, as the one who is praised loves the one who praises him;
1:555
或是因著貪財,如人為得利而愛富人;
or by reason of avarice, as one loves the rich man for the sake of gain;
1:556
or by reason of love of pleasure, as one who serves the belly and the parts below it.
1:557
其中頭一種是可稱讚的;
And the first is praiseworthy;
1:558
(10) If you hate some, and others you neither love nor hate,
1:559
對另一些人你愛,卻是有節制地愛,又對另一些人你極其地愛;
and others you love, but moderately, while still others you love exceedingly;
1:560
from this inequality know that you are far from perfect love, which lays down that one should love every man equally.
1:561
(11) "Turn away from evil, and do good."
1:562
向仇敵爭戰,好減少情慾;
Make war on the enemies, that you may lessen the passions;
1:563
and afterward be watchful, lest they increase.
1:564
Make war, that you may acquire the virtues, and afterward be watchful, that you may keep them safe.
1:565
And this would be what is meant by "to work and to keep."
1:566
(12) Those who, by God's permission, tempt us either inflame the desiring part of the soul, or disturb the incensive part, or darken the rational part, or surround the body with pains, or plunder our bodily goods.
1:567
(十三)鬼魔或親自試探我們,或差遣那些不敬畏主的人來敵對我們;
(13) The demons either tempt us by themselves, or arm against us those who do not fear the Lord;
1:568
親自試探,是當我們離群獨處時,正如它們在曠野試探主一樣;
by themselves, when we withdraw from men, as they tempted the Lord in the wilderness;
1:569
through men, when we dwell together with them, as they tempted the Lord through the Pharisees.
1:570
But let us, looking to our pattern, repel them from both directions.
1:571
(14) When the mind begins to make progress in the love of God, then the demon of blasphemy also begins to tempt it, and suggests to it such thoughts as no man, but only their father the devil, devises.
1:572
Having entertained such things, let him no longer dare to fly up to Him through his accustomed prayer.
1:573
But the destroyer gains nothing thereby toward his own aim, but rather makes us more steadfast.
1:574
因為我們既受攻擊又回擊,便在對神的愛上被顯為更經得起試驗、更真誠的;
For being warred against and warring back, we are found more proven and more genuine in the love of God;
1:575
"and may his sword enter into his own heart, and his bows be broken."
1:576
(十五)心思運用於可見之物時,便藉著感官為媒介,按本性領會萬物;心思並非惡,按本性領會也非惡,事物本身亦非惡,感官知覺亦非惡;
(15) The mind, applying itself to visible things, perceives things according to nature through the medium of the senses; and neither is the mind evil, nor the perceiving according to nature, nor are the things themselves, nor the sense-perception;
1:577
for these are the works of God.
1:578
(16) A passion is a movement of the soul contrary to nature, either toward irrational affection or toward indiscriminate hatred—of someone or of something sensible, or on account of something.
1:579
至於非理性的喜愛,譬如對食物、女人、錢財、過眼的榮耀,或其他某可感之物,或為著這些;
Such as toward irrational affection: of foods, or a woman, or money, or passing glory, or some other sensible thing, or on account of these;
1:580
and toward indiscriminate hatred: such as of any of the aforementioned, as has been said, or toward someone on account of these.
1:581
(17) Or again, vice is the mistaken use of concepts, upon which follows the abuse of things.
1:582
For example, as in the case of a woman, the right use of intercourse is the aim of procreation.
1:583
那麼,凡注目於逸樂的人,便在用途上錯謬了,將不好的當作好的;
He, then, who looks to the pleasure has erred concerning the use, reckoning what is not good as good;
1:584
such a one, then, abuses the woman in having intercourse with her.
1:585
And it is likewise in the case of other things and concepts.
1:586
"Casting me out, now they have surrounded me;"
1:587
"O my joy, deliver me from those who have surrounded me!"
1:588
(19) Grievous is the demon of fornication, and he vehemently assails those who struggle against the passion, especially in carelessness of diet and in encounters with women.
1:589
因為他藉著逸樂的滑膩,暗暗偷取心思,此後便趁心思安息時,藉著記憶向它進攻;
For stealthily, by the smoothness of pleasure, robbing the mind, he afterward sets upon it through the memory when it is at rest;
1:590
他又燒著身體,將各樣形像呈於心思之前,招引它應允罪;
and inflaming the body and presenting various forms to the mind, he calls it forth to assent to sin;
1:591
if you wish that these should not linger in you, take up fasting, and toil, and vigil, and that good stillness with fervent prayer.
1:592
(20) Those who ever seek out our soul do so through impassioned thoughts, that they may cast it into sin either in thought or in deed.
1:593
那麼,當他們發覺心思不接納〔它們〕時,便要蒙羞抱愧;
When, then, they find the mind not receiving [them], then they will be ashamed and put to confusion;
1:594
but when [they find it] occupied with spiritual contemplation, then they will be turned back and put to utter shame very speedily.
1:595
至於長老〔的職分〕,乃是那光照人進入對萬有之認識、又除滅假冒之名的知識的人;
and [the rank] of a presbyter, he who illumines unto the knowledge of the things that are and does away with the falsely-named knowledge;
1:596
and [the rank] of a bishop, he who perfects with the holy chrism unto the knowledge of the worshipful and Holy Trinity.
1:597
(二十二)當我們裡面的情慾藉著命令被減少時,鬼魔便衰弱;
(22) The demons grow weak when the passions within us are lessened through the commandments;
1:598
but they perish when, in the end, they are utterly done away with through the dispassion of the soul, no longer finding the things by which they were present in it and warred against it.
1:599
"They shall be weak and shall perish at Your presence."
1:600
(二十三)有些人因著對人的懼怕而禁戒情慾;
(23) Some men abstain from the passions out of human fear;
1:601
while others are freed from the passions through the divine judgments.
1:602
(24) All the words of the Lord contain these four things:
1:603
the commandments, the doctrines, the threats, and the promises.
1:604
And for their sake we endure every hardship, such as fasting, vigils, sleeping on the ground, toils and labours in service, insults, dishonour, tortures, deaths, and the like.
1:605
(25) 節制的賞賜是無情慾(dispassion);
(25) The reward of self-control is dispassion;
1:606
and that of faith is knowledge.
1:607
And dispassion gives birth to discernment,
1:608
while knowledge gives birth to love for God.
1:609
(26) 心智(nous)在實行(practical philosophy)上有成就,便進深到審慎(明智);
(26) The intellect that succeeds in the practical philosophy advances toward prudence;
1:610
and the one that succeeds in the contemplative life advances toward knowledge.
1:611
因為前者的職分是引領那竭力爭戰的人去分辨德行與惡行;
For it belongs to the former to lead the one who strives toward discernment between virtue and vice;
1:612
and to the latter to lead the one who partakes of it toward the principles concerning incorporeal and corporeal beings.
1:613
He is then deemed worthy of the grace of theology, when, having passed through all that has been mentioned by the wings of love and come to be in God, he will contemplate the principle concerning Him through the Spirit, as far as is possible for the human mind.
1:614
(27) When you are about to do theology, do not seek to grasp the principles that concern God in Himself,
1:615
for the human mind will not find them—indeed, neither those of any other being that comes after God—but examine, as far as you can, the principles concerning Him: such as those concerning His eternity, infinity and indeterminacy, His goodness, wisdom, and power as Creator, Provider, and Judge of all that exists.
1:616
For he is a great theologian among men who, even to some small degree, discovers the principles of these things.
1:617
因為藉著前者,他使慾望枯萎、使血氣(怒氣)馴服;
For by the one he withers desire and tames the incensive power,
1:618
and by the other he gives wings to the intellect and journeys forth to God.
1:619
(29) When the Lord says:
1:620
"I and the Father are one," He signifies the identity of essence.
1:621
"I am in the Father and the Father is in Me" makes clear the inseparability of the hypostases.
1:622
The Tritheists, therefore, by separating the Son from the Father, fall into a double precipice.
1:623
因為他們若一面稱子與父同永,卻又把子從父分開,就不得不說子不是從父所生,於是陷入主張三位神、三個本源的錯謬;
For either, while calling the Son co-eternal with the Father but separating Him from Him, they are forced to say that He was not begotten of Him, and so fall into asserting three gods and three principles;
1:624
or, while saying that He was begotten of Him but separating Him, they are forced to say that He is not co-eternal with the Father, and so to place the Lord of times under time.
1:625
For it is necessary, according to the great Gregory, both to preserve the one God and to confess the three hypostases, each with its own distinctive property.
1:626
For He is divided, yet indivisibly, according to the same Father, and is united, yet in a divided manner.
1:627
正因如此,這區分與這聯合都是何等奇妙難測;
And for this reason both the division and the union are paradoxical;
1:628
因為若子與父的聯合與分別,不過如同一個人與另一個人之間的聯合與分別,並無更深之處,那又有何奇妙可言呢?(30) 那在愛中完全、達到無情慾頂峰的人,不再認得自己的與別人的之分,也不分自己的女人與別人的女人,不分信的與不信的,不分為奴的與自主的,總之也不分男與女;
for what is paradoxical about it, if the Son were united to and separated from the Father merely as one man is united to and separated from another, and nothing more? (30) He who is perfect in love and has come to the summit of dispassion knows no distinction between his own and another's, nor between one's own woman and another's, nor between believer and unbeliever, nor between slave and free, nor in general between male and female;
1:629
but having risen above the tyranny of the passions and looking to the one nature of mankind, he regards all alike and is disposed equally toward all.
1:630
For in him there is neither Greek nor Jew, neither male nor female, neither slave nor free, but Christ is all and in all.
1:631
(31) 魔鬼從那潛藏在魂裡的情慾取得憑藉,在我們裡面挑起帶情慾的念頭;
(31) From the passions lying hidden in the soul, the demons take their occasions for stirring up impassioned thoughts within us;
1:632
then, warring against the intellect by means of these, they force it to come to consent to sin.
1:633
心智一旦被勝過,牠們就引它陷入意念中的罪;
And when it has been overcome, they lead it into sin in the mind;
1:634
and when this has been accomplished, they finally carry it off captive to the act.
1:635
After this, those who had laid the soul waste by means of the thoughts then withdraw together with them.
1:636
There remains only in the intellect the idol of sin, concerning which the Lord says:
1:637
"When you see the abomination of desolation standing in the holy place, let the reader understand."
1:638
The holy place and temple of God is the intellect of man, in which the demons, having laid the soul waste through impassioned thoughts, have set up the idol of sin.
1:639
至於這些事在歷史上也已經發生過,我想凡讀過約瑟夫著作的人,沒有一個會懷疑;
That these things have already come to pass also in a historical sense, no one who has read the works of Josephus, I think, doubts;
1:640
nevertheless some say that these things will also come to pass in the time of the Antichrist.
1:641
(32) There are three things that move us toward the good:
1:642
the natural seeds, the holy powers, and good resolve.
1:643
本性中的種子,例如:凡我們願意人怎樣待我們,我們也照樣待人;
The natural seeds, as when whatever we wish men to do for us we likewise do for them;
1:644
or as when we see someone in straits or in necessity and naturally show mercy.
1:645
The holy powers, as when, being moved toward a good deed, we find good co-operation and are brought to success.
1:646
And good resolve, as when, discerning the good from the evil, we choose the good.
1:647
(33) And again there are three things that move us toward the evil:
1:648
the passions, the demons, and evil resolve.
1:649
情慾,例如:當我們違背理性地貪求某物,比方說不合時宜或超過需用的飲食,或為著不是生養兒女的目的、或不合法地貪求女人;
The passions, as when we desire a thing contrary to reason, such as food out of season or beyond need, or a woman apart from the purpose of procreation, or one not lawful;
1:650
and again, when we grow angry or grieved beyond what is fitting, such as against one who has dishonoured or harmed us.
