1:2823
For we converse by letter, and not by spirit, in the first approach unto piety.
1:2824
但漸漸地朝向靈前進,藉著那更精細的默觀刮去言語的粗實,我們便盡人所能,純潔地在純潔中歸入基督;
But advancing little by little toward the spirit, scraping away the coarseness of the words by the finer contemplations, we come to be purely in Christ in purity, as far as is possible for men;
1:2825
so as to be able to say, according to the Apostle:
1:2826
我們從前憑著肉體認過基督,如今卻不再這樣認祂了」;
"Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him so no longer";
1:2827
這就是說,藉著心思單純地接近那話,不帶那些遮蓋祂的帕子;
namely, through the simple approach of the mind to the Word, without the veils upon Him;
1:2828
having advanced from knowing the Word as flesh, to His glory as of the Only-begotten from the Father.
1:2829
(六十二)那活出在基督裡之生命的人,已經超越了律法與本性的公義;
(62) He who has lived the life in Christ has transcended both the righteousness of the law and of nature;
1:2830
which the divine Apostle, showing this, says:
1:2831
因為在基督耶穌裡,受割禮不受割禮,全無功效」;
"For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision avails anything, nor uncircumcision";
1:2832
and by uncircumcision hinting at the equity of nature.
1:2833
(六十三)有些人藉著水與靈得重生;
(63) Some are regenerated through water and Spirit;
1:2834
while others receive baptism in the Holy Spirit and fire.
1:2835
And these four, I mean the water, the spirit, the fire, and the Holy Spirit, I understand to be the one and the same Spirit of God.
1:2836
因為對一些人,聖靈是水,因祂潔淨身體外面的污穢;
For to some the Holy Spirit is water, as cleansing the outward defilements about the body;
1:2837
對另一些人,只是靈,因祂成就那合乎德行的善事;
to others, spirit only, as effecting the good things according to virtue;
1:2838
對另一些人,是火,因祂洗淨魂深處內裡的污點;
to others, fire, as purging the inward stains deep within the soul;
1:2839
For from the different activity about the subject, the one and the same Spirit receives the different appellations.
1:2840
(64) The law gave the Sabbath, "so that," He says, "your beast of burden and your servant may rest."
1:2841
For the body is the beast of burden of the practical mind, being forced to bear loads by means of the modes of the virtues in practice.
1:2842
And the servant of the contemplative mind, as already reasoned by contemplations, and rationally serving the gnostic commands of the mind.
1:2843
And to both there is a Sabbath, which is the consummation of the good things wrought by them in both practice and contemplation, providing to each the rest befitting it.
1:2844
(六十五)那以合宜知識成就德行的人,以身體為牲口,用理性驅策它朝向當盡之責的運作;
(65) He who accomplishes virtue with the fitting knowledge has the body as a beast of burden, driving it by reason toward the activity of duties;
1:2845
並以僕人為那實行中合乎德行的方式;
and as a servant, the mode upon virtue according to practice;
1:2846
就是德行素來藉以產生的那方式本身;
that is, the very mode according to which virtue is wont to come into being;
1:2847
as though bought with silver, by the discerning reasonings.
1:2848
And the Sabbath is the dispassionate and peaceful state of both soul and body according to virtue, that is, the unalterable habit.
1:2849
(六十六)神的話對那些仍以較多的心思顧念德行屬身體之形式的人,成了糠與草;
(66) The word of God becomes chaff and grass for those who still have the greater part of their concern about the bodily forms of virtue;
1:2850
餵養他們魂中那受情感影響的部分,使其服事諸德行;
nourishing the passible part of their soul, for the service of the virtues;
1:2851
but for those raised up to the contemplation of the true understanding of divine things, it is bread, nourishing the intellectual part of their soul unto godlike perfection.
1:2852
And the Levite in the book of Judges says to the old man who lodged him in Gibeah:
1:2853
我們有餅,也有給我們驢的草料;
"We have both bread, and straw for our donkeys;
1:2854
and there is no lack of anything for your servants."
1:2855
(六十七)神的話被稱為甘露,並且確是如此;
(67) The Word of God is called dew, and is so;
1:2856
也被稱為水、泉源和江河,正如經上所記;
and water and fountain and river, as it is written;
1:2857
namely, according to the receptive capacity of those who receive, being and becoming these things.
1:2858
For to some He is dew, as quenching the burning and activity of the passions that lie upon them from without about the body.
1:2859
但對那些深處被惡的鏽蝕所焦乾的人,祂是水;
But to those whose depth is parched by the rust of evil, He is water;
1:2860
not only as destructive of the adversary by way of contrariety, but also as imparting a life-giving power unto well-being.
1:2861
And a fountain to those who have the habit of contemplation ever welling up, as a supplier of wisdom.
1:2862
對那些如江河般傾流敬虔、正直、拯救之教導的人,祂是江河,豐豐富富地澆灌彷彿是人、牲畜、野獸和植物的眾人;
And a river to those who pour forth, river-like, the godly and right and saving teaching, abundantly watering as it were men, and cattle, and beasts, and plants;
1:2863
為要叫人得以成神,被那些所講之事的悟性所高舉;
so that men may be deified, being exalted by the conceptions of the things spoken;
1:2864
並叫那些因情慾變得像牲畜的人,藉著對合乎德行之方式的精確闡明而重新成為人,得以恢復他們本性中的理性;
and those who have become brutish through the passions, being made human again through the exact demonstration of the modes according to virtue, may recover their natural rationality;
1:2865
並叫那些因邪惡習性與惡行變得像野獸的人,藉著溫和柔細的勸勉而被馴服,得以歸回本性的溫良;
and those who have become beastlike through evil habits and misdeeds, being tamed through the gentle and tender exhortation, may return to the gentleness of nature;
1:2866
and those who, plant-like, are insensible to good things, being softened by the deep penetration of the word, may receive perception unto fruit-bearing, and the power which nourishes them, the quality of the word.
1:2867
(六十八)神的話對那些照著實行、奮力奔跑德行之賽程的人,乃是道路;
(68) The Word of God is a way to those who run well according to practice, and vigorously, the stadium of virtue;
1:2868
對那些既不因虛榮偏右、也不因偏向情慾偏左的人,祂照著神引正他們的腳步;
and to those who turn neither to the right through vainglory, nor to the left through inclination toward the passions, directing their steps according to God;
1:2869
猶大王亞撒沒有持守這道到底,所以記載說他年老時腳上有病;
which Asa the king of Judah, not having kept to the end, is said in his old age to have become diseased in his feet;
1:2870
as having grown weak concerning the course of the life according to God.
1:2871
(六十九)神的話被稱為門,因祂將那些在無可指責的實行賽程中、美好地走完諸德行全程的人引入知識;
(69) The Word of God is called a door, as leading to knowledge those who have well accomplished the whole way of the virtues in the blameless course of practice;
1:2872
and as light, showing the many-shining treasures of wisdom.
1:2873
因為這同一位,既是道路,又是門、是鑰匙、是國度;
For the same is both way and door and key and kingdom;
1:2874
祂是鑰匙,因祂向配得的人開啟神聖的事物,又被開啟;
and a key, as opening to the worthy the things of the divine and being opened;
1:2875
and a kingdom, as being inherited, and becoming in all things by participation.
1:2876
(70) The Lord is called light, and life, and resurrection, and truth.
1:2877
祂是光,既作眾魂的光輝,又作驅逐無知黑暗者;
Light, both as the radiance of souls, and as the pursuer of the darkness of ignorance;
1:2878
又因祂光照心思,叫人領悟那不可言喻的事;
and as illumining the mind unto the understanding of ineffable things;
1:2879
並顯出那單被純潔者所看見的奧祕;
and showing the mysteries beheld by the pure alone;
1:2880
祂是生命,因祂供應那些愛主的魂在神聖事物上合宜的活動;
and life, as supplying to souls that love the Lord the fitting movement in divine things;
1:2881
祂是復活,因祂從那對物質之事已死的迷戀中喚起心思,使之脫離一切朽壞與死亡而潔淨;
and resurrection, as raising the mind from the dead attachment to material things, pure from all corruption and deadness;
1:2882
and truth, as bestowing upon the worthy the unalterable habit of good things.
1:2883
(七十一)那作神與父之神的話,奧祕地住在祂自己每一條誡命之中;
(71) God the Word of God and Father is mystically present in each of His own commandments;
1:2884
and God the Father is wholly inseparable, present by nature in the whole of His own Word.
1:2885
He therefore who receives a divine commandment and does it receives the Word of God who is in it.
1:2886
And he who has received the Word through the commandments has thereby together received the Father who is by nature in Him, and together received the Spirit who is by nature in Him.
1:2887
因為祂說:「我實實在在地告訴你們,有人接待我所差遣的,就是接待我;
"For amen," He says, "I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me;
1:2888
and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."
1:2889
He, then, who has received a commandment and has done it, has received and mystically possesses the Holy Trinity.
1:2890
and he is glorified in return by God, with the glory that is in God, receiving as it were the prize of virtue, by participation the grace of dispassion.
1:2891
For everyone who glorifies God in himself through the sufferings for virtue's sake according to practice, is himself also glorified in God, through the dispassionate illumination of divine things according to contemplation.
1:2892
For the Lord says, coming to His passion:
1:2893
"Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in Him.
1:2894
If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself."
1:2895
So that from this it is clear that the divine gifts follow upon the sufferings for virtue's sake.
1:2896
(73) So long as we behold the Word of God variously embodied through the enigmas in the letter of holy Scripture, we have not yet beheld noetically the Father in the incorporeal and simple and unitary and sole Son, as in an incorporeal and simple and unitary and sole Word, the bodiless and simple and unitary and sole One, according to the saying: "He who has seen Me has seen the Father."
1:2897
"I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me."
1:2898
There is need, therefore, of much knowledge, so that, having first slipped through the veils of the words about the Word, we may thus with a naked mind behold the Word pure, standing by Himself in Himself, who clearly, as far as attainable for men, shows the Father in Himself.
1:2899
這就是說,那捨棄話而危險地緊抓聖經字句的人,當話已從他心思逃脫之際,他卻以為自己從那些包裹物中抓住了那無體的話;
that is, he who, instead of the Word, perilously cleaves to the letters of Scripture, while the Word has escaped his mind, thinks to hold from the wrappings the bodiless Word;
1:2900
正如那埃及婦人,她抓住的不是約瑟,乃是他的衣服;
like the Egyptian woman, who laid hold not of Joseph, but of his garments;
1:2901
and like the men of old, who, abiding only in the comeliness of visible things, unwittingly worshiped the creation rather than the Creator.
1:2902
(七十四)聖經的話,藉著那更高的悟性,一部分地脫去那加在其上、按身體所構成之言語的綴合,便向那更有洞察力的心思,顯出自己如同在微小氣息的聲音中存在;
(74) The word of holy Scripture, in part stripping off, by the loftier conceptions, the composition of the sayings bodily fashioned upon them, is shown to the more discerning mind as existing in the voice of a thin breeze;
1:2903
to the mind which, through the utmost relinquishment of the activities according to nature, has been able to take perception of the simplicity alone which somewhat indicates the Word, like the great Elijah who was counted worthy of this vision in the cave of Horeb.
1:2904
For Horeb is interpreted as "newly-tilled land," which is the habit of the virtues in the new Spirit of grace.
1:2905
而那洞,乃是智慧在心思上的隱密;
And the cave is the hiddenness of wisdom according to the mind;
1:2906
in which whoever comes will mystically perceive the knowledge that is above sense, in which God is said to be found.
1:2907
就是說,他作為一個實行的人,在諸德行的習性裡;
that is, as a practical man in the habit of the virtues;
1:2908
但也在何烈那洞中;
but also in the cave that is in Horeb;
1:2909
that is, as a contemplative man in the hiddenness of wisdom which is found in the habit of the virtues alone.
1:2910
(75) When the mind shakes off the many opinions about beings that lie upon it, then the clear word of truth shines forth to it, giving it the pledges of true knowledge, and thrusting off the former preconceptions upon it like scales from the visual powers, according to the inspired and great Apostle Paul.
1:2911
For there are indeed scales, in truth, lying upon the discerning faculty of the soul, and barring the passage to the unalloyed word of truth, both the suppositions about the letter only of Scripture, and the passionate contemplations of visible things according to sense.
1:2912
(76) The divine Apostle Paul said that he knew the knowledge of the Word in part.
1:2913
But the great evangelist John says that he beheld His glory.
1:2914
"For we beheld," he says, "His glory, glory as of the Only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth."
1:2915
And perhaps holy Paul said that he knew in part the knowledge as of God the Word.
1:2916
For from His activities He is known only somewhat.
1:2917
For the knowledge of Him according to essence and hypostasis remains alike inaccessible to all angels and men, in no way known by anyone.
1:2918
但聖約翰既已盡人所能地,被引入那關乎話成肉身之完全的道理,便說他看見了那作為肉體之話的榮耀;
But holy John, having been initiated, as far as is possible among men, into the perfect word of the incarnation of the Word, said that he beheld the glory of the Word as flesh;
1:2919
that is, he beheld the principle, or rather the purpose, according to which God became man, full of grace and truth.
1:2920
因為這位獨生者蒙恩,並非就祂按本質是神、與父神同質而言,乃是就祂按本性、照著經綸成為人、與我們同質而言,祂為著我們這些需要恩典之人的緣故而蒙恩;
For not insofar as He is God by essence and consubstantial with God the Father has the Only-begotten been given grace, but insofar as by nature according to the economy He became man and consubstantial with us, He was given grace for our sake who need grace;
1:2921
and from His fullness we continually receive, according to all our advancement, the grace that is proportionate.
1:2922
So that he who has kept in himself the word perfect and undefiled, of God the Word who was incarnate for us, shall receive the glory full of grace and truth, of Him who for our sake glorified and sanctified Himself in our likeness at His coming.
1:2923
"For when He," he says, "shall be manifested, we shall be like Him."
1:2924
(七十七)只要魂從能力進到能力,從榮耀進到榮耀;
(77) So long as the soul makes its passage from power to power, and from glory to glory;
1:2925
that is, the advancement from virtue to greater virtue, and the ascent from knowledge to higher knowledge, it has not ceased to be a sojourner, according to the saying:
1:2926
"My soul has long been a sojourner."
1:2927
因為那距離極遠,它所當度過的各種知識為數眾多,直到它得以進入那奇妙帳幕的地方,甚至到神的殿;
For great is the distance, and the multitude of the kinds of knowledge that must be traversed by it, until it shall pass into the place of the wondrous tabernacle, even to the house of God;
1:2928
帶著歡呼稱謝、守節之人的聲音;
with the voice of exultation and confession, the sound of one keeping festival;
1:2929
ever adding voice to voice, the noetic to the noetic, to the advancement of the divine contemplations, with the exultation according to the mind in the things contemplated, that is, joy, and the proportionate thanksgiving.
1:2930
For all who have received the Spirit of grace keep such festivals, crying out in their hearts.
1:2931
(七十八)那奇妙帳幕的地方,乃是諸德行那無情慾、無損傷的習性;
(78) The place of the wondrous tabernacle is the dispassionate and unharmed habit of the virtues;
1:2932
according to which the Word of God, coming into being, adorns the soul like a tabernacle with the various beauties of the virtues.
1:2933
而神的殿,乃是由許多各樣默觀所構成的知識;
And the house of God is the knowledge composed of many and various contemplations;
1:2934
according to which God, dwelling in the soul, fills it from the bowl of wisdom.
1:2935
And the voice of exultation is the leaping of the soul over the riches of the virtues.
1:2936
And that of confession is the thanksgiving over the glory of the feasting according to wisdom.
1:2937
And the sound is the continual mystical doxology that comes from both, I mean exultation and confession, blended together.
1:2938
(七十九)那高貴地摔倒身體情慾,並充分地與污穢之靈爭戰,又把它們的思念從自己魂的境界中趕出去的人;
(79) He who has nobly wrestled down the passions of the body, and sufficiently fought against the unclean spirits, and driven out their conceptions from his own region according to the soul;
1:2939
讓他祈求賜給他一顆清潔的心,並在他裡面更新一個正直的靈;
let him pray that a clean heart be given to him, and that a right spirit be renewed in his inward parts;
1:2940
就是要完全被倒空那些卑劣的思念,並藉著恩典被神聖的悟性充滿;
that is, to be completely emptied of base thoughts, and to be filled with divine conceptions through grace;
1:2941
so that he may become a noetically bright and great world of God, composed of ethical and natural and theological contemplations.
1:2942
(八十)那造出清潔之心的人,不僅要認識那些低於並在神之後之事物的原理,也要在越過萬有之後,略略地看見祂;
(80) He who has wrought a clean heart will know not only the principles of things inferior and after God, but also somewhat beholds Him after the passage beyond all things;
1:2943
這乃是諸般善事至高的終結;
which is the utmost end of good things;
1:2944
神在這心裡成形,便屈尊藉著靈刻上祂自己的文字,如同刻在某些摩西的石版上;
in which God, coming into being, deigns to inscribe His own writings through the Spirit, as upon certain Mosaic tablets;
1:2945
as much as the heart has given itself through practice and contemplation, according to the commandment that mystically bids "Increase."
1:2946
(八十一)那被稱為清潔的心,或許乃是指那以任何方式、對任何事物都全無本性活動的心;
(81) Perhaps that heart is called clean which has no natural movement whatsoever, in any way, toward anything;
1:2947
in which, as upon a tablet well smoothed by reason of utmost simplicity, God coming into being inscribes His own laws.
1:2948
(八十二)清潔的心,乃是那向神獻上一個全然無形無狀之記憶的心;
(82) A clean heart is that which has presented to God a memory altogether formless and shapeless;
1:2949
and ready to be stamped by His types alone, by which He is wont to become manifest.
1:2950
(83) The mind of Christ, which the saints receive, according to him who said:
1:2951
但我們是有基督的心思」,它臨到我們,並非藉著奪去我們裡面那悟性的能力;
"But we have the mind of Christ," does not come upon us by deprivation of the intellectual power in us;
1:2952
也不是作我們心思的補足,也不是按本質與位格遷入我們的心思;
nor as completing our mind, nor as passing over essentially and hypostatically into our mind;
1:2953
but as illumining the power of our mind by His own quality, and bringing it to the same activity as Himself.
1:2954
For I myself say that to have the mind of Christ is to think according to Him, and to think Him through all things.
1:2955
(八十四)我們被稱為基督的身體,正如那話所說:「但我們是基督的身體,並且各自作肢體」;
(84) We are said to be the body of Christ, according to the saying, "But we are the body of Christ, and members in particular";
1:2956
並非藉著奪去我們自己的身體,而成為祂的身體;
not by deprivation of our own bodies, becoming His body;
1:2957
也不是藉著祂按位格遷入我們,或被一肢一肢地割裂;
nor again by His passing over hypostatically into us, or being cut up member by member;
1:2958
but by the shaking off of the corruption of sin, in the likeness of the Lord's flesh.
1:2959
For as Christ, by nature in flesh and soul, insofar as He is conceived as man, was sinless, so also we who have believed in Him, and have put Him on through the Spirit, are able by choice to be in Him without sin.
1:2960
(85) There are in Scripture both temporal ages, and ages containing the consummation of other ages, according to the saying: "But now once at the consummation of the ages," and what follows.
1:2961
And again others, ages free of temporal nature, after this present time, this age which is at the consummation of the ages, according to the saying: "That He might show in the ages to come the surpassing riches," and what follows.
1:2962
我們在聖經中也找到許多世代,有過去的、現在的和將來的;
And we find in Scripture also a multitude of ages, past and present and to come;
1:2963
and that there are certain ages of ages, and an age of an age, and eternal times, and generations conjoined with ages.
1:2964
為免我們如今闡述那話藉著時間性世代要指明甚麼、又藉著永遠的時間與世代要指明甚麼;
And lest now, saying what the word means to indicate by the temporal ages, and what by the eternal times and generations;
1:2965
and again what the ages of ages are simply, and what the simple age is, and the age of the age, we extend the discourse beyond the subject, let us leave these matters for the diligent to examine, and return to the purpose for which we brought these things forward.
1:2966
(八十六)我們知道,照著聖經有某種超越永世的事物;
(86) We know that there is something supra-eternal according to Scripture;
1:2967
聖經已指明這事物確實存在;
which Scripture has signified that it is;
1:2968
There is therefore something beyond the ages, the unalloyed kingdom of God.
1:2969
For it is not lawful to say that the kingdom of God has been begun, or is preceded by ages or times.
1:2970
我們相信這國乃是那些得救之人的基業、居所和地方,正如那真實的話所傳的;
And this we believe to be the inheritance, and dwelling, and place of those who are saved, according as the true word delivers;
1:2971
作那些因切慕而朝向那終極可欲之物移動之人的終結;
as the end of those who are moved by longing toward the ultimate object of desire;
1:2972
他們在其中成形,便領受了一切各樣活動的止息;
in which, coming into being, they receive the cessation of all whatsoever movement;
1:2973
因為再沒有甚麼時間或世代是他們所當度過的了,因他們已在萬有之後,達到了神;
as there being no longer any time or age that must be traversed by them, since they have arrived, after all things, in God;
1:2974
who is before all the ages, and whom the nature of the ages is not able to attain.
1:2975
(八十七)人在今生有多久,縱然他就現今的境地而論、無論在實行或默觀上是完全的,他所有的知識、預言和聖靈的憑質仍是局部的;
(87) For as long a time as anyone is in this life, even if he is perfect in respect of the present condition, both in practice and contemplation, he has knowledge and prophecy and the pledge of the Holy Spirit in part;
1:2976
他定要在諸世代過去之後,有一天進入那完全的分,這分要面對面地向配得的人,顯出那憑自己站立的真理自身;
being destined one day, after the passing of the ages, to come unto the perfect lot, which shows face to face to the worthy the truth itself standing by itself;
1:2977
so that he no longer has a part from the fullness, but receives the very fullness of grace whole by participation.
1:2978
因為使徒說:「眾人」(就是那些得救的人)「都要達到長成的人,達到基督豐滿之身材的度量」;
"For all," the Apostle says (that is, those who are saved), "shall come unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ";
1:2979
在祂裡面藏著智慧和知識一切的寶藏;
in whom are the treasures of wisdom and knowledge hidden;
1:2980
which appearing, that which is in part shall be done away.
1:2981
(八十八)有些人探問,那些蒙稱許得著神國中之完全的人,他們的境地將如何;
(88) Some inquire how shall be the condition of those counted worthy of the perfection in the kingdom of God;
1:2982
究竟是照著長進與遷移,還是照著在止息中的同一狀態;
whether according to advancement and transition, or according to identity in rest;
1:2983
and how one ought to suppose the bodies and souls to be.
1:2984
對此,人或可推測地說,正如在身體的生活中,營養有雙重的原則;
To this one might say conjecturally that, just as in the bodily life there is a twofold principle of nourishment;
1:2985
一是為著生長,一是為著維持那些受餵養之物的存留;
the one for growth, the other for the maintenance of those that are nourished;
1:2986
在我們達到身體成熟的身量以前,我們乃是為著生長受餵養;
until we attain the perfection of bodily stature, we are nourished for growth;
1:2987
但身體一停止向大處增長,便不再為著生長受餵養,乃是為著維持存留;
but when the body has ceased from its increase unto greatness, it is no longer nourished for growth, but for maintenance;
1:2988
so also in the case of the soul the principle of nourishment is twofold.
1:2989
因為它在德行與默觀上長進時受餵養,直到它越過萬有,達到基督豐滿之身材的度量;
For it is nourished while advancing in the virtues and contemplations, until, having passed beyond all beings, it attains the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;
1:2990
它在這度量裡成形,便止息了一切藉著中間之物、向增益與生長的長進;
in which coming into being, it ceases from all advancement unto increase and growth through intermediate things;
1:2991
乃直接被那超越悟性之物所餵養;
being nourished immediately by that which is above understanding;
1:2992
並因此或許超越了生長;
and on this account perhaps beyond growth;
1:2993
the kind of incorruptible nourishment, for the maintenance of the godlike perfection given to it, and the manifestation of the boundless splendors of that nourishment, according to which, receiving the ever well-being in like manner come to dwell in it, it becomes god by participation in the divine grace, all the activities of mind and sense having ceased, both it itself ceasing, and having brought to rest together with itself the natural activities of the body, the body having been deified together with it according to the measure of participation in deification proportionate to it.
1:2994
So that God alone is manifested through both soul and body, the natural marks having been overcome by the excess of glory.
1:2995
有些好學的人探問,那些永遠的住處與應許之間的差別,將以何種方式存在;
Some of the studious inquire in what manner the difference of the eternal mansions and promises shall be;
1:2996
whether according to local hypostasis, or according to the conception of the spiritual quality and quantity peculiar to each form.
1:2997
在一些人看來,前一種是真的;
And to some the first seems true;
1:2998
but he who has understood what is meant by "The kingdom of God is within you," and what by "There are many mansions with the Father," will rather come to the second.
1:2999
(九十)有些人探問,諸天的國與神的國有何差別;
(90) Some inquire what difference the kingdom of the heavens has with respect to the kingdom of God;
1:3000
whether they differ from one another according to hypostasis, or according to conception.
1:3001
To those who raise this question one must reply that they do indeed differ.
1:3002
For both are one in hypostasis.
1:3003
But the Kingdom of God is the imparting by grace of the good things that belong to God by nature.
1:3004
And the one is according to the end of beings, while the other is in conception beyond the end of beings.
1:3005
The saying, 'The Kingdom of heaven is at hand,' does not refer, as I think, to any contraction of time.
1:3006
For it does not come with observation.
1:3007
Rather, it consists in the relation, according to disposition, of those who are worthy of it toward it.
1:3008
For 'the Kingdom of God,' He says, 'is within you.'
1:3009
The Kingdom of God and the Father is present in potentiality in all who believe.
1:3010
But it is present in actuality in those who have utterly put off from their disposition all the natural life of soul and body, and have acquired only the life of the Spirit, and are able to say:
1:3011
'Yet I live; no longer I, but Christ lives in me.'
1:3012
Some say that the Kingdom of heaven is the mode of life of the worthy in the heavens.
1:3013
Others say it is the state of the saved that is like that of the angels.
1:3014
Still others say it is the very form of the divine beauty belonging to those who have borne the image of the Heavenly One.
1:3015
And all three opinions on this matter, as it seems to me, accord with the truth.
1:3016
For to all is the grace to come given according to the proportion of the righteousness that is in them in quality and in quantity.
1:3017
As long as one manfully runs through the divine contests according to practical philosophy,
1:3018
he keeps with himself the Word who through the commandments went forth from the Father into the world.
1:3019
But when, released from the wrestlings of practice against the passions, having been declared victor over passions and demons, he passes over to the gnostic philosophy that is through contemplation, he allows the Word mystically to leave the world again and to go to the Father.
1:3020
「我從父出來,到了世界;
'I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world;
1:3021
again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.'
1:3022
祂稱為「世界」的,或許是指那按實踐而有的、操練眾德行的辛勞工作;
By 'world' He perhaps meant the laborious working out of the virtues according to practice;
1:3023
祂稱為「父」的,乃是那按心思而有的、超乎世界並脫離一切物質思念的境界;
and by 'Father,' the state according to mind that is above the world and free from all material thinking;
1:3024
according to which the Word of God comes to be in us, ceasing from the battle against the passions and the demons.
1:3025
凡能藉實踐治死在地上肢體、並藉誡命之道勝過自己裡面情慾世界的人,此後必不再有患難;
He who has been able through practice to put to death the members that are upon the earth, and through the Word of the commandments to conquer the world of the passions within him, will henceforth have no affliction;
1:3026
having now left the world, and having come to be in Christ, who conquered the world of the passions and is the bestower of all peace.
1:3027
For he who has not forsaken his attachment to material things will have affliction continually,
1:3028
his disposition changing along with things that change by nature.
1:3029
But he who has come to be in Christ will in no way perceive any material vicissitude whatsoever.
1:3030
'These things have I spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace.
1:3031
在世上你們有苦難;
In the world ye shall have tribulation;
1:3032
but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.'
1:3033
That is to say: In me, the Word of virtue, you have peace,
1:3034
得以從物質情慾與事務的旋盪與紛擾中得釋放;
being delivered from the whirling and turmoil of the material passions and affairs;
1:3035
but in the world—that is, in attachment to material things—you have tribulation, because of their constant succession of changes.
1:3036
因為兩種人都有苦難:操練德行的人,因那與德行相連的勞苦;
For both have tribulation: both he who practices virtue, because of the toil joined to it,
1:3037
愛世界的人,則因物質之物的失喪;
and he who loves the world, because of the loss of material things;
1:3038
然而前者所受的,是使人得救的苦難;
but the one has a saving tribulation,
1:3039
while the other has a destructive and ruinous one.
1:3040
But the Lord is the relief of both:
1:3041
對前者,祂藉著在無情慾中的默觀,使眾德行的勞苦在祂裡面得安息;
of the one, by causing to rest in Himself, through contemplation in dispassion, the toils of the virtues;
1:3042
of the other, by removing through repentance his relational attachment to perishable things.
1:3043
The inscription written in the title concerning the cause of the Savior plainly showed that He who was crucified is King and Lord of practical, natural, and theological philosophy.
1:3044
我把那拉丁文的題字理解為實踐哲學;
I understand by the Latin inscription the practical philosophy;
1:3045
for the proper mark of the practical life, if anything is, is courage.
1:3046
By the Greek I understand natural philosophy, inasmuch as the Greek nation, more than other peoples, devoted itself to natural philosophy.
1:3047
And by the Hebrew, theological philosophy, inasmuch as this nation was manifestly from of old, in its fathers, dedicated to God.
1:3048
'In the mornings I slew all the sinners of the land,
1:3049
to cut off from the city of the Lord all that work iniquity;'
1:3050
that is, the passions of the body and the lawless reasonings of the soul.
1:3051
He who has kept the way of the virtues unblemished, without inclination to either side, with reverent and right knowledge, will know the coming of God to him through dispassion.
1:3052
'For I will sing, and I will understand in a blameless way: when wilt thou come unto me?'
1:3053
因為歌唱表明有德行的實踐;
For the singing signifies virtuous practice;
1:3054
and the understanding, the gnostic knowledge that rests upon virtue,
1:3055
according to which he who through vigilance in the virtues awaits his Lord perceives the divine presence.
1:3056
凡被引入敬虔的人,不當單憑慈愛被引向遵行誡命,更要藉著記念神的典章,常以嚴厲自我爭戰;
He who is being introduced to piety ought not to be led to the practice of the commandments by kindness alone, but rather also, by the remembrance of the divine ordinances, to contend the more frequently through severity;
1:3057
so that he may not only love divine things out of longing, but also abstain from evil out of fear.
1:3058
'For mercy and judgment will I sing unto thee, O Lord;'
1:3059
so that he may both cry out to God, delighted according to longing, and be vigorous for the song, being tempered by fear.
1:3060
He who through virtue and knowledge has attuned the body to the soul has become a harp and a flute and a temple of God.
1:3061
成為琴,因他妥善地保守了眾德行的和諧;
A harp, in that he has well guarded the harmony of the virtues;
1:3062
成為笛,因他藉著屬神的默觀領受聖靈的吹噓;
a flute, in that through the divine contemplations he receives the inbreathing of the Spirit;
1:3063
and a temple, in that through purity of mind he has become a dwelling-place of the Word.
