1:322
因為凡他自身是其位格的那些本性,他也就本性地接受了那些本性的本質之理;
For of whatever natures he himself was the hypostasis, of these he also naturally received the essential principles;
1:323
若他既接受了他自身作為其位格的那些本性的本質之理,那麼他也理當擁有肉身那有靈魂的本性運作,這運作的本質之理乃植根於肉身的本性之中;
but if he received the essential principles of those natures of which he himself was the hypostasis, he also fittingly possessed the natural, ensouled operation of the flesh, whose essential principle is implanted in that nature;
1:324
but if, as man, he had a natural operation whose principle was constitutive of his human nature, then clearly, as God too, he had a natural operation whose principle was declarative of his supra-essential Godhead.
1:325
因為他既是完全的神,同一位又是完全的人,依他所是其位格的每一個本性,他都本性地運作,卻並不因此被分割;
For being perfect God, and the same one perfect man, he operated naturally according to each nature of which he was the hypostasis, without being divided;
1:326
若依他所是其位格的每一個本性,他都本性地運作而不被分割,那麼顯然,隨同他所是其位格的那些本性,他也擁有它們本質性且構成性的運作——而他自己正是這些本性的聯合;
but if, according to each nature of which he was the hypostasis, he operated naturally without being divided, it is clear that, together with the natures of which he was the hypostasis, he also possessed their essential and constitutive operations, of which he himself was the union;
1:327
operating in a manner proper to himself, and by that through which he operated, confirming the truth of those natures out of which, in which, and which he was.
1:328
Christ, then, is one out of two natures:
1:329
即出於神性與人性;
of Godhead and of manhood;
1:330
乃是那獨生的道、聖子,並榮耀的主;
the only-begotten Word, and Son, and Lord of glory;
1:331
他在這些本性之中被認識,也被相信是真實地在其中存在的;
in which natures he is known, and as truly existing in which he is believed;
1:332
他擁有兩個本性的、普遍性的運動——亦即運作——構成他所出於的那些本性;而這些運作的個別成果,即是那些個別的運作行為;
possessing two natural and generic movements — that is, operations — constitutive of the natures out of which he was, whose particular effects were the individual acts of operation;
1:333
put forth from him, and brought to completion by him, without division of the natures out of which he was, and without any confusion whatsoever.
1:334
For he does not undergo division or confusion who is never subject to change, and who bestows on all existing things both their permanence in being, and in how they exist, and their constitution.
1:335
至聖的父啊,願這些話乃是為了成全你的吩咐而簡略道出的;
Let these things, holy Father, be said briefly for the sake of your command;
1:336
so that, if they bring anything of use, you may have a means of repelling the idle chatter of those fond of talk, which has taken license from the difficulty of the times.
1:337
求你不要輕忽你這貧乏的僕人;
And do not overlook your servant in his poverty;
1:338
反倒求你以神聖的聖靈使他富足,以你大能的代求來回報他的順服;
but enrich him with the divine Spirit, repaying his obedience with your powerful supplications;
1:339
and do not cease commending him to Christ, the great God and maker of all things, who is worshiped by all creation, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, unto the ages.
1:340
藉著「理」(λόγος),萬有的本性依「前行」(向外開展)而被界定,以致產生德行;
By reason, the nature of beings is circumscribed with a view to the generation of virtue, according to procession;
1:341
that is, the complete denial of nature which pertains to virtue.
1:342
藉著「心智」(νοῦς),一切世代與時間的運動依「上升」而被限定,以達成毫無謬誤之聯合的成立;
By the mind, the movement of every age and time is bounded, for the establishment of an unerring union, according to ascent;
1:343
而這聯合乃是對本性所在之處的超越;
that is, a transcending of those things in which nature exists;
1:344
I mean place and time, in which is the hypostatic existence of beings.
1:345
至於那按恩典而朝向「萬有所出、萬有所藉、萬有所歸」的那一位——作為萬有的終極目的——的復歸,則是依「提升接納」而發生的;
But the restoration according to grace toward him from whom are all things, and through whom, and unto whom, as the end of all things, comes about according to assumption;
1:346
這復歸對於那被提升接納者而言,是一種受動之經歷;
which is, on the one hand, a passion of that which is assumed;
1:347
but, on the other hand, an operation of him who assumes.
1:348
Person, that is, hypostasis:
1:349
因為「本質」——亦即「理」——就是「照著形像」的那一面;
for essence — that is, reason — is that which is according to the image;
1:350
but that which is according to likeness — that is, the manner of life — is the hypostasis; out of both of these together virtue has been brought to completion.
1:351
因為德行是智慧的位格;
For virtue is the hypostasis of wisdom;
1:352
and they say that wisdom is the essence of virtue,
1:353
and the foundation of virtue is constituted by the principle of the contemplation of things practical.
1:354
And the most unerring character of both is the unswerving gaze fixed upon That Which Properly Is.
1:355
論人本性上並非不可變易;
That man is not immutable by nature;
1:356
論意志乃本質或位格之屬性;
That the will is characteristic either of essence or of hypostasis;
1:357
而在此二者之間並無中間項,亦無由二者共同合成之項;
and there is no middle term between these, nor any common and composite [term] made of both;
1:358
That "deliberate choice," when said of Christ, signifies the natural act of willing,
1:359
that is, the appetitive power of nature.
1:360
Behold the mystery of the economy —
1:361
that is, concerning essence, and power, and operation.
1:362
May you too, Neilos, hear these things,
1:363
and may you think what the teachers of truth think.
1:364
五十、論塞維魯狡詐地聲稱位格與本性相同,為要藉「一個本性」確立其混淆之說,並逃避駁斥,聲稱他所謂「本性」,所理解的其實是「位格」;
50. That Severus maliciously says that hypostasis is the same as nature, so that by means of the one nature he may establish the confusion and escape refutation, saying that by "nature" he had understood "hypostasis";
1:365
並且再次引入區分,卻宣稱聯合乃出於位格;
and that again he may introduce division, while professing that the union is from hypostasis;
1:366
and that he may seem to escape notice by saying that, instead of "natures," he understands "hypostases."
1:367
And again, when accused, on the ground of a "mere difference," of teaching the non-existence of the natures, he may find as a refuge for his defense the mere difference in natural quality.
1:368
And that, just as Nestorius, by calling the union "mere," introduced a real division,
1:369
so also Severus, by calling the difference of natures "mere," makes the confusion a real one.
1:370
But Severus, hard pressed by these arguments and unable to bear the trial of truth, again, as is his custom, sets forth falsehood as his ally,
1:371
asserting that in the case of the economy, hypostasis is the same as nature,
1:372
and that the difference in natural quality is the same as the real difference according to nature,
1:373
because every quality is also natural, and is also called a "thing."
1:374
如此一來,若他被駁倒而顯露出,他藉「一個合成本性」之說,實則明明主張了瑪尼的幻影論、亞波利拿留的混淆論,以及歐迪克的收縮論(歐迪克主張聯合之後被聯合者歸入一個本質),他便可如變色龍轉換顏色一般,改換自己的說法,聲稱他所謂「本性」,所理解的其實是「位格」;
so that if, being caught, he is exposed by the refutations as clearly professing, through the one composite nature, both the fantasy of Mani and the confusion of Apollinaris, and also the contraction of Eutyches, who professed that after the union the things united come into one essence, then, like a chameleon changing its colors, he may change his own statement, saying that by "nature" he had understood "hypostasis";
1:375
或者若他被證實持守以便雍、撒摩撒他的保羅,以及聶斯多留的區分論,並宣稱道(Λόγος)的運作乃依恩典而有,如同臨於先知身上一般,他便可再度以虛謊作辯護士,聲稱他所說的「諸位格」乃是取代「諸本性」而言;
or if he is shown to hold the division of Ebion, of Paul of Samosata, and of Nestorius, and to be decreeing that the operation of the Logos is by grace, as in a prophet, he may again have falsehood ready as his advocate, declaring that he had said "hypostases" instead of "natures";
1:376
And if again he is justly accused of teaching, on the ground of the "mere difference," the non-existence of the things united, he may find as a refuge for his defense the [claim of] a difference as in natural quality,
1:377
聲稱聯合之後,在基督身上有的乃是本性性質上的差異,而非諸本性、亦即諸本質上的差異;
saying that after the union there is, in the case of Christ, a difference of natural qualities, but not of natures, that is, of essences;
1:378
through the expression that dissolves the confusion —
1:379
that is, "difference" — the cunning sophist, all the more, tightening the confusion
1:380
使依本性之律而言本為相反者相混,並非解消其相反,反倒使之結合,違反本性的界定與律則;
of the opposites according to the law of nature, not effecting the resolution of the opposites, but their combination, contrary to the definition and law of nature;
1:381
and becoming, with regard to "difference," for the deception of his hearers, such a one as Nestorius was proved to be with regard to "union."
1:382
因為那人〔聶斯多留〕僅以名義上的稱謂稱之為聯合,卻在實際運作上引入了諸事物的區分;
For that one, while naming the union only by a mere appellation, introduced in actual operation the division of the things [united];
1:383
and this one, while professing a mere difference after the union, holds that the existence of the things differing is only in conception,
1:384
while in actual operation he brings about their confusion.
1:385
因為若聶斯多留不曾主張聯合是僅屬名義上的,他就會論及那由諸本性聯合而成就的、基督那唯一合成的位格;
For if Nestorius had not held the union to have come about as a mere one, he would have spoken of the one composite hypostasis of Christ, brought to completion from the union of the natures;
1:386
and this one, if he were not proclaiming a mere difference, would not refuse to say that in Christ, after the union, there is the uncut and undivided quality of the differing things, knowing that with every difference, quantity is of necessity introduced together,
1:387
and to every quantity is joined the number that indicates it.
1:388
For it is impossible either for a difference of quantity to exist apart, or for a quantity to be discerned apart from the number that indicates it.
1:389
而那人,在基督身上僅認知諸本性的數量,卻不認知由諸本性合成之位格的唯一性,於是徹頭徹尾地以「聯合」這僅屬名義的稱謂,作為諸本性之區分的遮蓋;
And the one, knowing in the case of Christ only the quantity of the natures, but not knowing the oneness, by composition, of the hypostasis from the natures, makes the mere appellation of "union" a covering, through and through, for the division of the natures;
1:390
while the other, professing oneness according to nature alone instead of according to hypostasis, but not knowing the quantity according to nature, makes the mere difference in natural quality a covering for the confusion of the natures.
1:391
而那人,僅宣稱諸本性在意念〔的〕性質上聯合,便否認那唯一的位格,不肯承認諸事物之會合乃依本質而真實發生;
And the one, professing a union of the natures only in a deliberative quality, denies the one hypostasis, not enduring to say that the coming-together of the things has occurred as true according to essence;
1:392
for authority, and dignity, and such-like willing, of which Nestorius said the union consisted, are clearly movements of the gnome, but not of nature.
1:393
But the other, saying that after the union there is a mere difference only in natural quality, manifestly effects the abolition of the things united, denying the difference, according to essence, of the very things united, in natural otherness.
1:394
And to speak briefly concerning these things:
1:395
一人設想出意念性質上的聯合,卻導致本性所有諸事物的區分;
the one devised the union of gnomic qualities so as to result in the division of the things that exist by nature;
1:396
while the other, on the contrary, contrived the difference of natural qualities so as to result in the confusion of the things.
1:397
Truly an evil pair of lawless men, madly and wickedly bent, by opposite means, on tearing apart the truth of the orthodox doctrines.
1:398
因為那一人,藉引入意念性質上的聯合,卻造成了照他自己所言原本根本未曾聯合之諸本性的區分;
For the one, by introducing a union of gnomic qualities, effects a division of the natures which, according to him, were not united at all;
1:399
while the other, saying that after the union there is only a difference of natural qualities, likewise introduces a confused alteration of the natures which, according to him, were not united at all —
1:400
not knowing even what they are saying.
1:401
因為,若他們確實決意要言行一致,聶斯多留就理當——既聲稱聯合乃是由意念性質而來——不去區分那些他起初根本未曾宣稱有聯合的諸本性;
For it was necessary, if indeed they had resolved to be consistent with themselves, that Nestorius, saying that the union came about from gnomic qualities, should not divide the natures of which, from the very beginning, he had not at all professed a union;
1:402
而應當就他所主張有聯合的那些〔性質〕,承認聯合之後有差異;
but should rather acknowledge, of those [qualities] of which he asserts the union to be, a difference after the union;
1:403
positing that, after the union, he does not confuse the natures — of which we do not permit him to speak of a union — for as long as he remains ignorant of their difference after the union.
1:404
因為被聯合諸事物的差異,是在聯合之後被察見的,縱使聶斯多留為此發狂;
For the difference of the things united is beheld after the union, even though Nestorius rages against it;
1:405
and the union of the things differing after the union [is likewise beheld], even though Severus arrays himself against it, and makes great advocacy on behalf of falsehood.
1:406
那麼,若照聶斯多留所言,聯合僅是由諸意念之意願而成,就讓他也一併陳明這些意願聯合之後的差異,並放棄對那些根本未曾聯合之諸事物的區分;
If, then, according to Nestorius, the union came about only of the gnomic acts of willing, let him also state the difference of these after the union, and abandon the division of the things that were in no way united;
1:407
and let him bring together, along with the difference of the gnomic acts of willing, also the variation of the gnome,
1:408
依此變異所自然顯明的,並非依本性而有的差異,乃是依位格而有的差異,且在意念諸意願的差異中,造成善性的鬆弛與加強;
according to which it is not the difference according to nature that is naturally shown, but that according to hypostasis, producing, in the difference of the gnomic acts of willing, a relaxation and an intensification of goodness;
1:409
and it has made sinful the man who, according to him, was being deified by progress,
1:410
inasmuch as he did not have, in every mode and principle, the same gnomic act of willing as God.
1:411
因為意念諸意願的差異,如我所言,造成了意念的變異;
For the difference of the gnomic acts of willing, as I have said, produces the variation of the gnome;
1:412
and the variation of the gnome introduces the diminution of goodness,
1:413
by which whoever is still held fast in any respect has not yet become perfectly sinless according to the gnome.
1:414
Therefore Nestorius, not accepting the one according to hypostasis from the coming-together of the natures, thereby also dissolved the union of the gnomic acts of willing, being unable to say what the one thing is that is shown to result from the union of the gnomic acts of willing.
1:415
For he cannot speak of an identity of goodness, since the difference of the gnomic acts of willing after the union clearly manifests to them an otherness according to intensification and relaxation.
1:416
For of whatever things there is a coming-together, of these it is altogether necessary also to speak of the difference.
1:417
And in vain was the term "identity of counsel" devised by him, even though it is fitting for showing the division of the persons.
1:418
For "identity of counsel" is a union of counsels that preserves the difference of the things united according to it, provided that, unconfused, the division of the persons who will [it] is contemplated together with them.
1:419
51. That the Fathers, in saying that there are two wills in the case of Christ, signified the natural laws, not the gnomic inclinations.
1:420
But let no one hold to account the argument that forbids the duality of the wills of knowledge,
1:421
發現幾乎所有具榮耀的教師都說有兩個意志;
finding that almost all the glorious teachers say there are two wills;
1:422
nor again, on the other hand, should the pious mind for this reason shift over to one will, after the manner of Severus, lest it make one evil the successor of another evil —
1:423
I mean, confusion succeeding division.
1:424
因為那些受神默示的教父們,論及基督時,並沒有說有數個意念性的意志,而是說有數個本性的意志;
For the divinely-inspired Fathers did not speak, in the case of Christ, of a plurality of gnomic wills, but of natural ones;
1:425
rightly naming as 'wills' the essential and natural laws and principles of the natures that were united —
1:426
因為他們確實明智地把那受靈明賦生之肉身的本性慾望——而非某個以推理運動來思慮之人的意念性慾望——稱為『意志』;此慾望具有渴慕真實存有者的本性能力,受道自然地推動並塑成,以成就救世工程;
for indeed they wisely called 'will' the natural appetite of the flesh that was intellectually ensouled — not the gnomic [appetite] of some particular man who reasons by discursive movements of thought — an appetite possessing the natural power of longing for that which truly is, being naturally moved and formed by the Word for the fulfillment of the economy;
1:427
without which it is impossible for human nature to exist.
1:428
因為本性的意志乃是對那依本性而存有者具渴慕之能力,也是統攝一切本質上屬於該本性之諸特性的能力;
For natural will is an appetitive power of that which exists according to nature, and a power holding together all the properties that essentially belong to the nature;
1:429
依此能力,『生來即能願欲』這一點,總是內在於那本性上具意願能力者之中;
according to which power, 'being naturally disposed to will' is always innate in that which is by nature capable of willing;
1:430
然而『生來即能願欲』與『願欲』並不相同;
but 'being naturally disposed to will' and 'to will' are not the same;
1:431
因為那能言說者總是生來即具此能力,卻不總是在言說;
for that which is capable of speech is always naturally so disposed, but it does not always speak;
1:432
因為前者屬乎本質,與本性之理相連結;
since the one belongs to essence, being bound up with the principle of nature;
1:433
而後者則屬乎旨意,是由言說者的意念所塑成的;
while the other belongs to counsel, being formed by the gnome of the one who speaks;
1:434
以致於總是生來即能言說,這屬乎本性;
so that it belongs to nature always to be naturally disposed to speak;
1:435
而如何言說,則屬乎位格;
but how to speak belongs to hypostasis;
1:436
just as it is also with being naturally disposed to will, and to will.
1:437
但若『生來即能願欲』與『願欲』並不相同(因為,如我所說,前者屬乎本質;
But if 'being naturally disposed to will' and 'to will' are not the same (for the one, as I said, belongs to essence;
1:438
while the other belongs to the counsel of the one who wills) —
1:439
then the incarnate Word, as man, possessed 'being naturally disposed to will,' moved and formed by his own divine will.
1:440
For 'his willing,' says the great Gregory, 'is in no way opposed to God, being wholly deified.'
1:441
但若它已被神化,顯然是藉著與那使之神化者的本性相聯而被神化的;
But if it had been deified, it had clearly been deified by its connatural union with that which deifies;
1:442
然而那使之神化者與那被神化者,無疑是二者;
but that which deifies and that which is deified are certainly two;
1:443
yet not one and the same in nature.
1:444
因為那使之神化者與那被神化者若確實屬於「相關者」一類;
For if indeed that which deifies and that which is deified belong to the class of relatives;
1:445
and relatives are always by nature introduced together with one another, and the one is conceived along with the other.
1:446
Therefore, being so by nature, and willing also the shrinking-back toward death, the Savior, as man, manifests this in the flesh together with the rest of the [blameless] passions, showing the economy to be pure of all illusion, and redeeming the nature from the sufferings that had been condemned against it because of sin.
1:447
祂又再次顯明那衝力,在肉身中將死亡置於死地;
And again he displays the impulse, having put death to death in the flesh;
1:448
so that, as man, he might show in himself that which naturally belongs [to human nature] as being preserved, and, as God, might display the Father's ineffable and great counsel being fulfilled in bodily form.
1:449
For he did not become man primarily in order that he might suffer, but that he might save.
1:450
'Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me;'
1:451
'yet not as I will, but as you will.'
1:452
在顯明那收縮的同時,也顯明人性意志的衝力,此衝力是在與神性意志的本性相聯之中被塑成並生成的,乃依照本性之理與救世工程之式二者的交織而成;
showing, together with the shrinking-back, also the impulse of the human will, being formed and coming to be within the connatural union with the divine [will], according to the interweaving of the principle of nature with the mode of the economy;
1:453
if indeed the incarnation is a clear demonstration of nature and of economy —
1:454
I mean, of the natural principle of the natures that were united, and of the mode of the union according to hypostasis: the one being confirmed [intact], while the other innovates upon the natures, without change or confusion.
1:455
But he was not in need of the same thing, in the same respect, being both nullified and brought into actual operation — which would be absurd —
1:456
since the Father's will is, by nature, the Son's will.
1:457
由此,救主作為人,便具有本性的意志,受祂自己神性的意志所塑成,而不與之相違逆;
The Savior, then, as man, possessed a natural will, formed by his own divine will, not opposed to it;
1:458
因為凡屬本性所有者,絕不與神相違逆,因其甚至不屬乎意念性的;
for nothing natural is ever at all opposed to God, since it is not even gnomic;
1:459
而依位格而有的分別,也正是在此被察見,只要它是依乎本性的;
where indeed a division according to person is also observed, provided it accords with nature;
1:460
since otherwise the Maker would have to be held responsible for the fault, as having made for himself that which contends against nature.
1:461
But how would the incarnate Word have truly become man, if he were bereft of that which most of all characterizes the nature as rational?
1:462
For that which is deprived of the appetitive movement according to desire would also be wholly without any vital power.
1:463
And that which does not have vital power from nature clearly does not have any soul whatsoever, without which not even flesh could ever subsist.
1:464
因此,他便使救世工程成了肉身的一種純然虛幻的成形;
Therefore he made the economy a mere illusory shaping of flesh;
1:465
而非那由靈明且理性受賦生之肉身本性所成就的救世工程——道依位格成了肉身而成就了這救世工程——因為按塞維魯所言,祂作為人並不具有本性的意志;
but not [an economy fulfilled] by the nature of flesh, intellectually and rationally ensouled, which the Word, having been incarnate according to hypostasis, fulfilled — since, according to Severus, he did not have a natural will as man;
1:466
for if, as man, he truly lacked a natural will, then he did not truly become a perfect man, nor did he become man at all.
1:467
For what existence does an incomplete nature have, of which there is not even a principle?
1:468
由此,塞維魯及其黨徒的目的,便是要藉著某種本性上的欠缺,將那在不可言喻之聯合中所取用的本性徹底逐出;
The aim, then, of Severus and those around him is, by means of some natural deficiency, altogether to expel the nature that was assumed in the ineffable union;
1:469
and thereby to ratify the abomination of Mani's illusion, and of Apollinarius's confusion, and of Eutyches's commingling of essence.
1:470
因為我記得,我曾在克里特島逗留期間,有幾位屬塞維魯一黨的偽主教與我爭辯;
For I recall that, while sojourning on the island of Crete, certain false bishops of the party of Severus disputed with me;
1:471
〔宣稱有〕隨這些〔運作〕而來的諸意志,藉此必然一同引入位格的二重性;
[claiming that there are] wills following upon these [operations], by which a duality of persons is necessarily introduced together;
1:472
但另一方面,也不能有單一的〔意志〕,因為它無法被理解為單純的;
but neither, again, can [there be] a single [will], since it cannot be understood as simple;
1:473
rather, we say — according to Severus — that there is one will, and that every divine and human operation proceeds from one and the same incarnate God the Word.
1:474
Against whom one might indignantly bring forward that portion of prophecy:
1:475
'Escape to Zion, you who dwell with the daughter of Babylon.'
1:476
因為塞維魯的心思,確實就是那『北方』,已成了幽暗之地,被剝奪了神聖之光的居留;
For truly Severus's mind is 'the North,' having become a gloomy place, deprived of the sojourn of the divine light;
1:477
and the 'daughter of Babylon' is the confused teaching of false dogmas, wretchedly begotten from the most vile disposition that came upon him — [a teaching] which those inhabit who have turned their face away from the light of knowledge, and who are unwilling to be saved by returning to Zion, I mean, the Church.
1:478
For the reasoning of Severus, when put to the test, is overthrown alike in theology and in economy together.
1:479
因為按他所言,若諸意志本性上是隨諸運作而來,而諸位格又是由諸意志引入的,正如結果隨原因而來一般;
For if, according to him, wills naturally follow upon operations, and persons are introduced by wills, just as effects [follow] causes;
1:480
not to mention what the proof of this would be —
1:481
那麼顯然,按他所言,每一位格都有一個意志;
and clearly, according to him, there is a will for every person;
1:482
and to this [will] there will certainly be introduced together a corresponding operation.
1:483
For the principle of a relative term, having an indissoluble relation, accordingly produces an equal reciprocal correspondence of the related terms.
1:484
由此,既然籠統而言的說法含有多重意義:那麼,若那依互相對應而與諸位格一同被引入的諸意志是本性的,則按塞維魯所言,那蒙福的單一體也將成為諸本性的三一體;
Therefore, since what is said without qualification has many meanings: if the wills that are introduced together with the persons by reciprocal correspondence are natural, then, according to Severus, the blessed Monad will also be a Trinity of natures;
1:485
但若〔諸意志〕是意念性的,那麼作為位格的三一體,它必因諸意志彼此不合而與自身相爭;
but if [they are] gnomic, then, as a Trinity of persons, it will certainly be at odds with itself, its wills not agreeing;
1:486
or else, altogether, if indeed the supra-essential Trinity has one will, the tri-named Godhead will be of a single person.
1:487
此外,若按塞維魯的命題,意志總是隨運作而來;
And again, if, according to Severus's proposition, a will altogether follows upon operation;
1:488
and a person is introduced together with this [will], then necessarily, when the operation is abolished, the will that follows upon it is abolished together with it, and so too is the person introduced together with it.
1:489
而若意志是隨運作而來的;
And if the will [follows] upon operation;
1:490
and the person is co-abolished with the will, then, according to Severus, Christ will be without hypostasis.
1:491
...the operation, because the will that is abolished together with it entails the abolition together of the person that is co-introduced with the will.
1:492
又,若照他所言,意志必然都是隨附於運作之後,而位格則與諸意志一同被引入;
And again, if, according to him, wills altogether follow upon operations, and persons are introduced together with the wills;
1:493
他又說,一切神性與人性的運作,都出自同一位成了肉身的神—道;
and he says that every divine and human operation proceeds from one and the same incarnate God the Word;
1:494
而照他所言,一切意志(即神性的與人性的)既是隨附於諸運作、並與依同等數目而引入的諸位格一同而來,便必然都是一同出自同一位成了肉身的道;
and every will according to him (namely, both divine and human), as following upon the operations together with the persons introduced with them in equal number, will altogether be brought forth together from one and the same incarnate Word;
1:495
如此一來,依塞維魯的說法,基督因諸本性運作被廢棄,將成為無本質者;
Therefore, according to Severus, by the abolition of the natural operations Christ will be without essence;
1:496
又因那唯一〔運作〕被劃除,再度成為無意向、無位格者;
and by the exclusion of the one [operation], again without volition and without hypostasis;
1:497
又因神性與人性運作的全部產生,而成為多意向、多位格者;
and by the entire production of divine and human operation, of many volitions and of many persons;
1:498
or, to speak more properly, of infinite volitions and infinite persons.
1:499
For he who has said 'every operation' has thereby made an indication of innumerable quantity.
1:500
如此,按塞維魯命題的換位而論,他關於神學的道理已然崩解,因為他引入了亞流式的多神論,以及撒伯流式的無神論,並引入了一個依希臘人方式而自相爭戰的神性本性;
Therefore, according to the conversion of Severus's proposition, the doctrine of theology has collapsed for him, since he introduces an Arian polytheism and a Sabellian atheism, and a nature of divinity that, in the manner of the Greeks, fights against itself;
1:501
又按命題本身而言,他關於救恩安排的道理顯然已遭敗壞,因為他宣稱那唯一的基督是無本質、無意向、無位格的;
and according to the proposition [itself], clearly the doctrine of the economy has been corrupted for him, in declaring the one Christ to be without essence, without volition, without hypostasis;
1:502
and again for him who professes the same [Christ] to be of infinite volitions and infinite persons.
1:503
See where the canon of Severus, in its course, leads away those who are persuaded by it.
1:504
For every such argument turns out to be of this kind, not having truth as its unconquerable foundation.
1:505
But in saying that Christ has one will, O best of men, how, and of what kind, do you say this to be?
1:506
You have alienated him by nature from both Father and Mother, since he is united according to essence to neither.
1:507
For Christ, by nature, is neither of the two.
1:508
And how will you escape the danger of polytheism in saying this?
1:509
But if it is [a will] of gnome, it will be characteristic of his hypostasis alone.
1:510
因為屬於意念的,乃是用以界定一個位格的;
For that which pertains to gnome is definitive of a person;
1:511
and he will clearly be shown, according to you, to be of a different will from the Father and the Spirit, and at variance [with them].
1:512
But if it is of his divinity alone, then divinity will be subject to passion, given over, contrary to nature, to eating and drinking.
1:513
But if it is of his humanity alone, it will not be operative by nature.
1:514
For how could it be, if indeed it is human?
1:515
And the display of the miracles will clearly be shown to be a monstrous portent.
1:516
But if it is common by nature to both, how will there be one common will belonging to things whose nature is different?
1:517
But if [it is common] as belonging to a composite whole, this is added to the novel myth and fabrication.
1:518
For what is a composition of will?
1:519
Again you have alienated him from the Father, having characterized, by a composite will, only a composite hypostasis.
1:520
如此,這論證步步推進,便將凡父所未曾栽種的一切栽植連根拔起;
Thus, then, the argument, advancing, uproots every planting which the Father did not plant;
1:521
since it is not natural to preserve a foreign cultivation.
1:522
然而,看來塞維魯廢棄了基督人性中本性所有的意志,卻不知道,尤其對一切理性本性而言,其最恰切、首要的特質,正在於依其欲求而有的運動;
But, as it seems, Severus abolished the natural will of the humanity in Christ, not knowing that the most proper and primary property, especially of every rational nature, is the movement that consists in its appetency;
1:523
which the Fathers, having considered, confessed brilliantly to be a difference of natural, and not of gnomic, wills in Christ.
1:524
因為他們絕不會論及基督裡意念諸意志的分別,免得使他成為二意念、二意向,可以說是在其思慮的立場上與自己相爭;
For they would never have spoken of a difference of gnomic wills in Christ, lest they make him of two gnomai and two volitions, and, so to speak, at odds with himself in the disposition of his reasonings;
1:525
並因此而將他描述為二位格者;
and for this reason represent him as two-personed;
1:526
they who indeed know that it is solely on this account that the difference of gnomic wills has arisen in [our] life —
1:527
namely, the entrance of sin, and our separation from God.
1:528
因為惡除了在於我們依意念而有的意志與神聖意志之間的分別之外,別無所在;
For evil consists in nothing else except only in the difference of our will according to gnome from the divine will;
1:529
to which [difference] there is altogether introduced an opposing multiplicity, and the number that signifies it, showing our gnomic will's antipathy toward God.
1:530
There is, then, one and the same aim of impiety belonging to both Nestorius and Severus, even though the manner is different.
1:531
其一者,因懼於混淆而逃避,躲避按位格而有的聯合,遂將本質上的分別變成了位格上的分裂;
For the one, fleeing confusion on account of it, avoiding the union according to hypostasis, makes the essential difference into a personal division;
1:532
另一者,則因懼於分裂,不肯言及本質上的分別,遂將按位格而有的聯合變成了本性上的混淆;
while the other, on account of division, not speaking of an essential difference, works the union according to hypostasis into a natural confusion;
1:533
然而,對基督既不當有混淆,也不當有分裂;
whereas it is necessary [to confess] neither confusion in Christ, nor division;
1:534
而應當宣認:在本質上有分別者聯合為一,在位格上聯合為一者仍有分別,使得諸本質之理與聯合之式都得以虔誠地宣告;
but to confess union of the things that differ in essence, and difference of the things that are united in hypostasis, so that both the principle of the essences and the mode of the union may be piously proclaimed;
1:535
其一者僅〔宣認〕意念諸性質的聯合;
the one [confessing] only the union of gnomic qualities;
1:536
另一者則僅確認聯合之後諸本性的分別——二者皆已偏離了事實的真理;
and the other, having ratified only the difference of the natures after the union — both have fallen away from the truth of the realities;
1:537
while [they], having boldly condemned confusion of the mystery...
1:538
因為那超乎感覺之上的,不知飽足為何物;
For that which is beyond sense-perception knows no satiety;
1:539
nor indeed does that which is beyond conception know any restriction whatsoever.
1:540
因為其一者,按本性已超越了一切流溢與消散;
For the one has, by nature, risen above all flux and efflux;
1:541
而另一者,則超越了一切形式與形狀;
and the other transcends every form and figure;
1:542
那前者,依其所宜,使那隱祕之事得以顯明;
and that former one, as is lawful, effects a manifestation of what is hidden;
1:543
而這後者,則提供了那可能達到的領悟;
while this latter one provides the comprehension that is attainable;
1:544
and as much as suffices for the ravishing of the mind, and for the grasping of the Holy Spirit.
1:545
因為正是到此程度、也正為此緣故,那超乎人之上者所懷、藉顯現而有的仁愛俯就,方才成就;
For it is up to this point, and for this reason, that the loving condescension of him who is above man, through manifestation, has come to be;
1:546
藉恩典使那些依意念與之同升者得以神化;
deifying by grace those who ascend together with it by gnome;
1:547
並藉道的虛己,在誡命之工的完成中,領受與之相應的豐盛;
and who, by the kenosis of the Word, receive the corresponding fullness, in the completion of the fulfilment of the commandments;
1:548
依此,你自己既已被引至明智與勇毅的完全境地,便以清醒節制那顯而可見者,並以公義滋養那隱而不見者;
according to which, having yourself been led up to the perfection of prudence and courage, you soberly discipline that which is visible, and justly enrich that which is hidden;
1:549
使你得以在前者中彰顯耶穌的治死之工,將一切的罪全然消滅;
so that in the former you might exhibit the mortification of Jesus, wholly obliterating all sin;
1:550
並在後者中顯明生命,以超乎世界的方式展現一切德行;
and in the latter you might display the life, putting forth every virtue in a manner that transcends the world;
1:551
由此,你既已正確地成就了神聖的實踐與默觀,便獲得了救恩作為那神聖的終向;
from which, having rightly accomplished both sacred practice and contemplation, you have obtained salvation as a sacred end;
1:552
為要將此救恩也分授於他人、並使之為人所知,你便以效法神的方式,選擇向我這不配、卑微、且無名之人,惠賜尊貴的文字;
which, in order to impart also to others, and to make it known, in godlike imitation, you have chosen — toward me, unworthy, lowly, and unknown as I am — to make use of honored words;
1:553
首先,是要藉言語使我得智慧,並使我通達;
and first, to make me wise by word, and to grant me understanding;
1:554
其次,也要藉那居於你內、且遍賜於各處眾人的恩典,使我成聖;
and further, also to sanctify me through the grace that dwells in you, which is distributed to all everywhere;
1:555
for it is uncircumscribed, having as its cause the uncaused Word.
1:556
然後,也要充分引導我認識那按人的樣式而有之神聖塑造的新奧祕,亦即神的道為我們的緣故成了肉身、並完全成為人的奧祕;
and then also to lead me sufficiently to knowledge of the new mystery of the divine fashioning according to man, of God the Word who for our sake was made flesh and perfectly became man;
1:557
並非要藉你的提問,學得那最基本的道理;
not wishing, by your question, to learn what is elementary;
1:558
因為一切美善之事,你早已盡收其中;
for you already possess in sum all things that are good;
1:559
but to be advanced to a more perfect initiation — namely, that which has not yet received the lesser [teaching].
1:560
And having greatly admired your pious manner, I put forth this discourse according to my ability.
1:561
宣稱:按本性而言,救主身上之人性並非一物,而屬我等者又是另一物;
declaring that the human [nature] in the Savior is not, according to nature, one thing, while that which is ours is another;
1:562
而是本質相同、毫無差異,因其確實取自我等之[本性],按那取自至潔天主之母、童貞而無玷之血的不可言喻之取納而言;
but the same in essence and without variance, since indeed it was taken from ours, according to the ineffable assumption from the virginal, undefiled blood of the all-pure Mother of God;
1:563
道與此[血]以彷彿種子之方式聯合,遂成為肉身,卻未因此脫離其按本質為神之實;
to which, being united after the manner of seed, the Word became flesh, without departing from being God according to essence;
1:564
且被稱為與我等相同之完全人,唯獨無罪;
and he was accounted a perfect man like us, sin alone excepted;
1:565
因此[罪],我等屢屢悖逆,且在意願上與神相爭,因我等對此[意願]兼具趨向兩端之傾向;
on account of which we often rise in revolt, and wrestle against God in our act of willing, since we possess its inclination toward either extreme;
1:566
然而祂按本性全然無罪,因祂並非僅僅是人,而是成為人之神,故祂毫無相悖之[意願];
but he, being by nature free from all sin, inasmuch as he was not a mere man, but God who became man, had nothing opposed [in himself];
1:567
反倒使我等之本性保持無玷,且在各方面確實純然不染;
but preserved our nature undefiled, and in every respect truly unstained;
1:568
『如今這世界的王將到;他在我裡面是毫無所有』;
'Now the ruler of this world comes, and finds nothing in me';
1:569
亦即,那些我等藉以敗壞本性、從而顯出意志相悖之事,祂皆無有;
namely, of those things by which we, falsifying our nature, display the opposition of the will;
1:570
因此[相悖],基督就屬我等之[人性]而言,亦被稱為『未受制服者』,直到祂藉成為人之大能,使我等也脫離此[相悖]為止;
on account of which even Christ is said to be, in that which is ours, 'unsubjected,' until he release us also from it by the power of the incarnation;
1:571
為確證此[道理]之真,祂為我等成為萬事,且甘願為我等而行,絲毫未曾虛偽我等之本質,亦未虛偽其[本質]中任何無可指摘之本性所有者;
confirming the truth of which, he became all things for our sake, and did all willingly on our behalf, in no way at all falsifying our essence, nor anything of its blameless and natural [properties];
1:572
縱然祂使此[本質]連同其一切[本性所有者]神化,猶如燒紅之鐵一般,使之全然成為神能運作者,因聯合之故,徹底且極致地貫通於其中;
though he deified it together with all those [properties], after the manner of iron set aglow with fire, rendering it wholly theurgic, having, on account of the union, interpenetrated it entirely and to the utmost;
1:573
and having become, without confusion, one with it — the same and single hypostasis.
1:574
由是,祂身上之人性所以異於我等者,並非因本性之理,乃因其誕生之奇特方式;
Whence the human [nature] in him differs from ours, not by reason of the principle of nature, but by reason of the strange manner of his generation;
1:575
按本質而言,仍屬相同;
being the same according to essence;
1:576
but not the same in respect of its being without seed, since it was not a bare [human nature], but truly that of him who for our sake became man.
1:577
正如祂之意願,本質上固然如我等一般,屬於本性所有,然卻按神聖之方式被塑成,超乎我等之上;
Just as, then, his willing too, while properly natural even as ours, is yet shaped in a divine manner, beyond us;
1:578
yet it is distinguished within that same nature, just as also unbegottenness and begottenness [are distinguished within one Godhead].
1:579
Since, perhaps, if the Word as man had had a difference from our nature on account of this difficulty [that has been raised],
1:580
for unbegottenness and begottenness are not the same.
1:581
則我等對於古時無精血而生之亞當與夏娃,亦當有此[差異];
we too shall have [such a difference] in relation to the ancient Adam and Eve, who came to be without seed;
1:582
(==) ὁ μέν γάρ, πλάσμα τοῦ πλάσαντος·
蓋彼[亞當]乃塑造者所塑之物;
for the one [Adam] was a fashioning of the Fashioner;
1:583
but she [Eve] was a portion of the thing fashioned.
1:584
然而,子按神性而言,實與父為同一;
But indeed the Son is the same as the Father in respect of the Godhead;
