1:1516
for the denial of things that exist and are preserved is truly an annulment.
1:1517
因為要嘛按他們的說法,諸本性在合一之後並未被取消,它們仍存在、仍得保全,那麼理當承認,它們在合一之後得以保全;
For either the natures, according to them, are not annulled after the union, and they exist and are preserved, and it is right that they, being preserved, be confessed after the union;
1:1518
or, if indeed it is not right for them to be confessed after the union, then, according to them, it is right to say that they neither exist nor are preserved in Christ, and they have been annulled.
1:1519
For as for that which it is not altogether right to name, it is, I think, much better and more just to say that it does not exist at all,
1:1520
than that they should persuade us by argument how it is right, in Christ, not to confess the [natures] out of which Christ is, which exist and are preserved after the union without any change or alteration whatsoever, and without transformation into one another according to the essential principle,
1:1521
and [that] we should submissively embrace the deprivation of the confession of the [natures] that are preserved and exist in Christ.
1:1522
But just as Christ, after the union, is not, according to every principle and mode, one, so again, after the union, Christ is not, according to every principle and mode, two.
1:1523
And if Christ is not, after the union, two according to every principle and mode,
1:1524
then certainly, according to some principle and mode, on account of the hypostatic identity, that is, the one hypostasis, according to which he cannot have difference, Christ is one.
1:1525
Since, then, the same [Christ] is both one and two according to one principle and mode and another, it is necessary to examine according to which principle he, the same, is one, and according to which he is two.
1:1526
那麼,若他們要說基督依本性之理而為「一」,那麼按他們的說法,整個[基督]顯然就會單純是「一個本性」,毫無任何差異可言;
If, then, they should say that he is one according to the principle of nature, then evidently, according to them, the whole will simply be one nature, without any difference whatsoever;
1:1527
而若我們容讓他們如此主張,那麼按他們的說法,基督便既不是神,也不是人;
and if we should grant them to say this, then, according to them, Christ will be neither God nor indeed man;
1:1528
nor at all a creature, nor a creator.
1:1529
For a nature spoken of simply/absolutely does not admit, at all, the signification of either of these.
1:1530
But if, fleeing this manifest absurdity, they should say that Christ is one composite nature, they have truly failed to realize how the darkness of impiety has driven them to the furthest error.
1:1531
Concerning composite nature more precisely, and the principle pertaining to it;
1:1532
and how those who say that Christ is one composite nature are impious.
1:1533
因為每一個複合的本性,首先須被理解為:其諸部分依複合之聯結彼此相合,乃是非出於[各部分之]抉擇的;
For every composite nature is understood, in the first place, to have the coming-together of its parts with one another, in the composite union, without [their own] choice;
1:1534
其次,它〔複合本性〕也具有彼此同時、且與自身同時的諸部分,這些部分在進入存有的生成上乃是共存的,其中任何一部分在時間上都不先於另一部分而存在;
and next, it also possesses its parts as coeval with one another, and with itself, coexisting with respect to their coming into being, neither part temporally preexisting the other;
1:1535
此外,它更被認知為是為要成全那宏偉地標示出宇宙全體之整全性而被造成的;
and furthermore, it is recognized to have been made for the completion of that totality which magnificently comprehends the universe;
1:1536
none of which is observed at all in the case of Christ by those who wish to be pious,
1:1537
免得我們使道與肉身的聯合成為非出於意願、也非出於抉擇之事;
lest we make the union of the Word with the flesh involuntary and without choice;
1:1538
也免得我們使神的道,就其進入存有的生成而言,與肉身同時;或使肉身,就[道]無始的存有而言,與道同永恆;
and [lest we make] either God the Word coeval with the flesh with respect to [their] coming into being, or the flesh co-eternal with the Word with respect to [his] beginningless existence;
1:1539
or [lest] we define Christ as having nothing more than the rest of the species considered with respect to universal nature, as [merely] a part brought forth by the power that constituted the universe, for the completion of the whole, according to the rest of the species.
1:1540
For this is the definition, and principle, and law of every composite nature, just as the power of truth, and the course of logical sequence, guide those who make their examination of beings with understanding, to say.
1:1541
And who could still belong to the portion of the pious, thinking thus concerning God the Word, who exists before all the ages;
1:1542
不如更確切地說,〔思想祂為〕萬世的創造者,並且是按己願、出於自願的意志,向我們世人施行自我倒空(虛己)的;
or rather, to speak more properly, [thinking of him as] maker of the ages, and as having made his self-emptying toward us human beings voluntary according to will, and self-determined;
1:1543
並且〔如此思想祂〕是為了矯正與更新,而非為要成全整個宇宙之完備,而成為人的;
and [as having become man] for correction and renewal, but not for the completion of the universe, having become man
1:1544
For it was by the mode of economy (dispensation), and not by the law of nature, that the Word of God ineffably sojourned among men through flesh.
1:1545
因此,基督並非如那些使福音落空者之新說所主張的那樣,是一個合成的本性;
Therefore Christ is not a composite nature, according to the innovation of those who empty the Gospel [of its meaning];
1:1546
就其臨在之式而言,祂全然不受合成本性之律的奴役;
being altogether unenslaved to the law of composite nature, in respect of the mode by which he comes into being;
1:1547
祂乃是合成的位格,卻沒有任何依種類而言的合成本性可歸於其上;
but rather a composite hypostasis, which does not have any composite nature according to species predicated of it;
1:1548
which is indeed paradoxical—to behold a composite hypostasis without the composite nature according to species being predicated of it.
1:1549
But if, according to those men—the wondrous citadel of the arguments of Severus—Christ is a composite nature, then it is assuredly either generic or singular.
1:1550
For it is impossible to conceive of any other [option] intermediate between these two.
1:1551
而若基督是種類性的本性,祂顯然就要被歸屬於眾多且在數目上互異的事物之上;
And if Christ is a generic nature, he will evidently be predicated of many things that also differ in number;
1:1552
並且祂就只在觀念上存在,存在於那些擁有其存在的個體之中;
and he will exist only in conception, among the things in which he has his existence;
1:1553
而不是在祂本身、在某一專屬的位格之中被認識;
and he will not be known in himself within any particular hypostasis of his own;
1:1554
apart from the accidents observed in the individuals subordinate to it.
1:1555
因為凡一切種類性的本性,其定義與義理正是如此;
For such is the definition and rational principle of every generic nature;
1:1556
and thereby, on account of Severus's excessive and unrestrained madness against the truth, a multitude of Christs would be introduced to us instead of one, having in no way whatsoever any identity with God or with men.
1:1557
But if Christ is a singular nature—to pass over saying that a nature is by no means at all circumscribed as a whole by one person—
1:1558
即便他們最終抬出那傳說中的鳥──鳳凰──彷彿它是能構成其己見的、某個偉大而不可辯駁的例證;
even if in the end they put forward, especially, the fabled bird, the phoenix, as though it were some great and unassailable example constituting their own opinion;
1:1559
concerning which I am even afraid to say anything, lest I incur the laughter of folly among sensible people, by attempting to show that a myth is [merely] a myth.
1:1560
For if the phoenix is a bird, it is certainly also an animal.
1:1561
But if it is an animal, then, first of all, it is by no means altogether singular insofar as it is an animal.
1:1562
And furthermore, if indeed it is an animal, it is also an ensouled, sentient body.
1:1563
But if the phoenix is an ensouled, sentient body, it clearly also falls under generation and corruption.
1:1564
我們當思量:凡受生成與朽壞所限的有靈魂、有感覺能力的身體,是否可能有任何一者,能以位格而言為獨一的本性而存在;
We must consider whether it is possible for any of the ensouled and sentient bodies subject to generation and corruption to exist as a nature that is singular according to hypostasis;
1:1565
for the succession of such [bodies] from one another according to species is the most evident mark and definition of their being.
1:1566
just as the divine Scripture also testifies, providing through itself confirmation for this argument, when it presents God as giving these commands to the great Noah:
1:1567
"And God said to Noah, 'Enter, you and all your household, into the ark, for I have seen you righteous before me in this generation.'"
1:1568
"And of all the clean cattle, bring in to yourself seven and seven, male and female;"
1:1569
"and of the cattle that are not clean, two and two, male and female;"
1:1570
"and of all the clean birds of heaven, seven and seven, male and female, and of all the unclean birds of heaven, two and two, male and female, to preserve seed alive upon all the earth."
1:1571
在這些〔受造物〕之中──鳳凰若確實作為一種有翼的動物被列入其中──按照神的宣告,它就不是以位格而言獨一的本性;不過,如我前面所說,這些話我們就不必再認真計較了;
Among these—if indeed the phoenix, as a winged animal, is numbered—it does not exist as a nature singular in hypostasis, according to the divine pronouncement; though, as I said, let us not press these things [in earnest];
1:1572
for it is not our wish to contend over matters that are not necessary.
1:1573
It is evident to all that if Christ is indeed a singular nature, he is consubstantial neither with God the Father, nor with men.
1:1574
For that which is altogether singular according to nature is completely estranged from natural kinship with anything else whatsoever.
1:1575
But if, according to those men, as the argument has shown, Christ is according to nature altogether estranged from all beings—
1:1576
we shall urge those very new dogmatists to say what they consider him to be according to nature, and by what reasoning they worship Christ, who—so far as their own premises of argument go—is nothing, being thus blasphemed by them.
1:1577
既然如此,按照前述論證的力量,對於那些說基督按本性是一、亦即是一個本性──無論稱之為單純的或合成的──之人,必然隨之而來的是極大而可畏的危險;
If, then, a great and fearsome danger necessarily follows—according to the force of the argument set forth—upon those who say that Christ is one according to nature, that is, one nature, whether called simple or composite;
1:1578
and this [one nature], whether generic, that is, common, or singular, that is, particular—
1:1579
let us with all vigilance keep our own hearts pure from such an opinion, so that we may also be freed from the threat that impends upon it.
1:1580
讓我們虔誠地承認:就基督而言,「二」是依本性相異之理──亦即,組成祂的諸本性之間的差異,即便在聯合之後,仍如整體中的諸部分那般被保存──而言的;
And let us piously confess the 'two' with respect to Christ according to the principle of natural otherness—that is, the difference of the natures of which he consists being preserved even after the union, as of parts within a whole;
1:1581
依此理,只要每一部分就其自身本性之理,在與另一部分的關係上皆保持不受損害,這些部分便永不會在本性上彼此混同;
according to which the parts never naturally coincide with one another, so long as each preserves, in relation to the other, its own principle of nature unimpaired;
1:1582
而「一」則是依位格同一之理而言的;依此理,基督作為整體,就其自身整體而論,絕不容有任何由差異所生的區分,亦即分割;
but let us confess the 'one' according to the principle of hypostatic identity, according to which Christ as a whole admits, with respect to himself as a whole, no distinction—that is, no division—arising from difference;
1:1583
因為祂被相信無論在取肉身之前,或在成肉身之後,皆是同一位格;
inasmuch as he is believed to be one hypostasis both before the flesh and after the incarnation;
1:1584
and he is worshiped and glorified by us as one of the holy and royal Trinity.
1:1585
For the hypostasis of Christ is singular, as a whole, being in no way apportioned among the extremes according to its characterizing property—that property by which it is distinguished from them.
1:1586
By 'the extremes' I now mean: God the Father, from whom Christ was divinely begotten before the ages;
1:1587
以及那聖潔、榮耀滿盈的童貞女與母親──同一位〔基督〕為我們的緣故,按人性從她而生──〔那位格〕憑其固有諸部分與兩端的親緣關係,保守著本質上的同一性,絲毫無損;
and the holy, all-glorious Virgin and Mother, from whom the same [Christ] was humanly begotten for our sake—[the hypostasis], by the affinity of its own parts toward both extremes, preserving its identity according to essence without diminishment;
1:1588
in respect of which parts Christ, while admitting the principle of difference, does not depart from his own singular hypostasis.
1:1589
For every whole—especially one contemplated by composition, as being from things that differ—while singularly preserving the identity of its own hypostasis, also has the unconfused difference of its own parts in relation to one another, according to which it preserves undefiled the essential principle of each part in relation to the other.
1:1590
同樣地,諸部分在彼此的合成之中,一面保守其依本性而言之理,使之純正而無虧損,一面又擁有那所屬的獨一整體、不可分割的同一性;
And likewise the parts, in their composition with one another, while preserving their principle according to nature pure and undiminished, possess the undivided identity of the single whole to which they belong;
1:1591
according to which it singularly preserves the principle according to hypostasis altogether undivided.
1:1592
既然如此,如前論證與真理並行所示,凡就基督而立法,將「一」設立於本性之理上,或反過來將「二」設立於位格之理上,都是全然不敬虔的;
If, then, as the argument, proceeding together with truth, has shown, it is altogether impious to lay down, concerning Christ, that the 'one' be established according to the principle of nature, just as, conversely, [it is impious to lay down] that the 'two' [be established] according to the principle of hypostasis;
1:1593
因為前者〔將「一」置於本性之理上〕正是亞波里納留那腥臭謬論的特有標記,他將諸本性摻混並混淆為一個本性,使〔救贖的〕經世全然變得無從辨識;
for the former is characteristic of the stench of Apollinaris, who blends and confuses the natures into one nature, and renders the [divine] economy altogether indiscernible;
1:1594
positing that, properly speaking, there is no nature at all after the union.
1:1595
For each of these [natures], passing over into the other and lapsing into it, ceases to be what it is.
1:1596
And the other belongs to the Judaic derangement of mind of Nestorius, who divides the one hypostasis into two hypostases, and denies the whole economy, refusing to say that God the Word was essentially united to the flesh according to hypostasis.
1:1597
因此,讓我們正確而恰當地運用這論證,將那些心術乖僻者的言論,扭轉導回正道;
Let us, then, use the argument rightly and fittingly, turning back toward the straight [path] the utterances of those who are perverted;
1:1598
亦即:〔說〕「二」,是依本性相異、亦即差異之理而言;
namely, [saying] the 'two,' according to the principle of natural otherness, that is, difference;
1:1599
而「一」,則是依位格之理而言;
but the 'one,' according to the principle of hypostasis;
1:1600
so that both the diversity of the natures of which Christ consists may be preserved in Christ after the union,
1:1601
and likewise the sameness and singularity of the hypostasis of God the Word incarnate may be preserved without multiplication.
1:1602
因為照異端所行,將諸實體的陳述與承認彼此互換,會導致那些本體實在的消失無蹤;
For the mutual interchange of the predication and confession of the realities produces, according to the heretics, the disappearance of the underlying subjects;
1:1603
truth not permitting the proper designations of the realities to be interchanged with one another at all—
1:1604
as [when we say that] the same one is both God and man after the union.
1:1605
For he who says that Christ is God and man after the union necessarily confesses, together with the names, the natures also after the union, having chosen to believe rightly.
1:1606
For if Christ is God and man after the union, according to the common confession, then evidently, having the realities together with the names, he is truly so even after the union.
1:1607
因為諸實體本是先於其本有的名稱而被構思的;
For realities are conceived prior to their proper names;
1:1608
and a name could never exist at all apart from the reality, which of itself grants the name its standing, and in turn receives signification [from it].
1:1609
但若照他們所言,基督在聯合之時並不擁有這些名稱所指的實體,那麼祂就要被證明只有空洞的稱謂──毫無所附、了無實體;
But if, according to them, Christ does not possess, at the union, the realities of which these are the names, then he will be shown to have these appellations as bare—set forth attached to nothing, and bereft of realities;
1:1610
and Christ, according to them, will be God and man only in name, and not in reality.
1:1611
than which what could be more godless?
1:1612
But if, declining to be so mad, they should say that the appellations applied to Christ after the union are not devoid of realities,
1:1613
正如他們不拒絕說合一之後基督有兩個稱謂,同樣,他們也當說合一之後基督有兩個本性——他正是由這兩者所構成、並在這兩者之中而立——這些稱謂也正屬於這兩個本性;
just as they do not refuse to say the two appellations of Christ after the union, so let them also say, after the union, the two natures of Christ, out of which and in which he consists, to which also the appellations belong;
1:1614
if indeed they truly and faithfully confess that the things united are preserved, in a real manner, according to nature, after the union.
1:1615
並且,依照教父們的教導,關於「道成肉身的一個本性」有著虔敬的宣認;
And concerning the one incarnate nature of the Word there is a pious confession, according to the Fathers;
1:1616
and a denial of the one composite nature.
1:1617
又,我們相信同一位不可分割地存在於兩個本性之中,即存在於神性與人性之中;
And again we believe the same one to be, indivisibly, in two natures, as in Godhead and manhood.
1:1618
因為正如我們說基督「出於兩個本性」時,我們理解他是出於神性與人性而成,如同整體出於部分;
For just as, when saying that Christ is out of two natures, we understand him to be out of Godhead and manhood, as a whole out of parts;
1:1619
so also, saying that after the union he is in two natures, we believe him to be in Godhead and manhood, as a whole in its parts.
1:1620
And the parts of Christ are his Godhead and his manhood, out of which and in which he subsists.
1:1621
並且,我們照著聖區利羅的教導,被教導要相信、宣告並宣講:神─道「道成肉身的一個本性」,此肉身具有理性且有靈明的魂;
And again we have been taught to believe, to say, and to proclaim one incarnate nature of God the Word, incarnate in flesh possessing an intellective and rational soul, according to holy Cyril;
1:1622
by saying incarnate, understanding the essence of the nature that is according to us to have been brought in.
1:1623
And again the miracles and the sufferings belong to the same and one Christ, and to the same one the two births: the one before the ages, incorporeally from the Father, and the temporal one, from a Mother and Virgin, corporeally, brought about for our sake.
1:1624
然而,我們完全拒絕稱基督為「一個複合的本性」;
But we entirely refuse to call Christ one composite nature;
1:1625
這不僅是出於前述的緣由,也因為直到如今,沒有任何一位受公認的教父被證實曾說過這樣的措辭;
not only for the reasons already stated, but also because not one at all of the approved Fathers has been shown, up to this point, to have spoken this expression;
1:1626
並且,這顯然是異端阿波里納里烏及其門徒的產物;
and because it is evidently the offspring of Apollinarius the heretic and his disciples;
1:1627
having accepted whose error, Severus reasonably also adorns himself with their expressions.
1:1628
For Christ is not, according to Apollinarius and Severus, a natural unity by composition, so long as he preserves intact, even after the union, the otherness of the natures out of which he is.
1:1629
同樣,他也不是如聶斯多留所主張的那樣,是位格上的二元,因為那聯合起來的兩者,雖彼此有別,卻並非各自完全獨立地存在;
Nor indeed is he a hypostatic dyad, according to Nestorius, so long as the things that have come together, though distinguished from one another, do not subsist entirely by themselves;
1:1630
並且,只要那道成肉身的神─道,在成肉身之後仍是同一位,並且只要他所領受的、那與他聯合、具理性且有靈明地被賦予魂的肉身,並非按其自身本性之理而先行獨立存在;
and so long as God the Word incarnate is one even after the incarnation, and did not assume flesh that had pre-subsisted according to its own principle of nature, [flesh] united to him and rationally and intellectively ensouled;
1:1631
but, according to the Fathers, one composite hypostasis, according to which the same one is wholly God, and one of the holy and all-praised Trinity together with the manhood, on account of the Godhead; and the same one is wholly man, and one of mankind together with the Godhead, on account of the manhood.
1:1632
關於「複合位格」,一段更合乎自然哲理的辨析;
A more precise, natural-philosophical exposition concerning the composite hypostasis;
1:1633
and an accurate demonstration that those who confess Christ to be one composite hypostasis do not fall into the same absurdities as those who say he is one composite nature.
1:1634
But if someone should suppose that, because every composite hypostasis possesses its parts as contemporaneous with one another, the same absurdity is likewise entailed for those who say Christ is one composite hypostasis, such a person, in my judgment, does not suppose rightly.
1:1635
因為並非每一個複合的位格,都毫無限定地在其諸部分的生成上,擁有彼此同時的部分;
For not every composite hypostasis, without qualification, has its parts contemporaneous with one another as regards their origination;
1:1636
而只有那顯然歸屬於一個複合本性之下、且有這樣一個複合的種類被述說於其上的位格才是如此;
but only that hypostasis which evidently falls under a composite nature, and has such a species predicated of it;
1:1637
which [hypostasis], having the aggregate of the properties concerning it interwoven with the common and universal element of the predicated essence or nature, is a nature — that is, [a nature] with properties.
1:1638
If, then, the nature under which a hypostasis falls, and the species predicated of it, is composite, then it is altogether necessary that the hypostasis too be composite, and possess its parts as contemporaneous with one another, on account of its predicated essence, that is, nature, which exists in such a way as to be the same as the species, apart from its distinguishing characteristics.
1:1639
正如我們在為單純意義上所說的「位格」下定義時如此說:「位格乃是連同諸特性的某個本質」,或者:「位格乃是能涵括諸個殊者的某個本質,即涵括其自身個體中一切特性者」;
For just as, defining hypostasis spoken of simply, we say: Hypostasis is a certain essence with properties, or, a certain essence inclusive of the particulars, namely of all the properties in its own individual instance;
1:1640
同樣地,當我們為那有進一步限定、而非單純意義上所說的「位格」下定義時,我們便說:「複合的位格,乃是連同諸特性的某個複合本質」;
so too, defining the hypostasis spoken of with further qualification, but not simply, we say: A composite hypostasis is a certain composite essence with properties;
1:1641
inclusive of the particulars, namely of all the properties in its own individual instance.
1:1642
For the things which are commonly observed in the individuals under the same species characterize primarily, in the individuals under it, that which is generic to the essence, that is, the nature.
1:1643
而「複合」乃是一切歸屬於複合種類之下的諸個體所共有的;
And composite is common to all the individuals under the composite species;
1:1644
therefore, the composite characterizes the nature in its individuals as composite primarily, but not the hypostasis.
1:1645
再者,凡歸屬於這些共通、普遍者之下的諸個體,其一切定義皆是出於這些共通、普遍者;
And moreover, again, every definition of the individuals falling under them is derived from the common and universal elements;
1:1646
並且,凡歸屬於類的成分之下的一切,都自然地是從那類的成分獲得其自身描述的起點;
and from the generic elements all the things under them naturally have the beginning of their own description;
1:1647
because it is clear what the thing defined properly and primarily is.
1:1648
If this is true — as indeed it is — it is clear that he who has spoken of a composite hypostasis referred back to a nature, has thereby expressed together, in the individual of the hypostasis, that which generically inheres in the common element of the essence, along with the properties that characterize it individually.
1:1649
So that he who has said a composite hypostasis falling under a certain nature has said nothing other than a composite nature, that is, essence, with properties.
1:1650
所以,如既已顯明的,每一個複合的本性,其各部分依組合而彼此聚合,乃是非出於抉擇的;其諸部分彼此同時而有;並且其產生,是為要成全那按種類、於萬有之中每一物身上所觀察到的整全性;
If, therefore, as has been shown, every composite nature has, without deliberate choice, the coming-together of its own parts with one another according to composition, and possesses its parts as contemporaneous with one another, and has come to be for the completion of that wholeness which is observed, according to species, in each thing among the things that exist;
1:1651
then evidently every hypostasis, according to what is natural to it, has, with respect to its own genus and species, an unvarying constitution as regards its being.
1:1652
So long as they cannot establish this, they build the foundations of their own doctrines upon sand.
1:1653
For he who ignorantly forces Christ to be subjected to the aforesaid absurdities, on the ground that he both is a composite hypostasis and is piously confessed as such by us, has strayed far from the road leading to the truth — or rather, to speak more properly, from the truth itself.
1:1654
因為基督這偉大而可敬的奧祕,既不像個體那樣,有某個普遍、屬類的本性作為種類被述說於其上;
For this great and awe-inspiring mystery of Christ neither, as an individual, has some universal and generic nature of his predicated as a species;
1:1655
也不是它自身即為一個類,或作為一個種類而被述說於自然地歸屬其下的諸個體之上;
nor indeed is it itself a genus, or a species predicated of the individuals naturally under it;
1:1656
以致它能被納入前述任何一條規則之下;
so that it could be subjected to any of the aforementioned rules;
1:1657
since it does not even have, as compared to composite things as regards their mutual coming-together, an equal and similar concurrence of God the Word with the flesh according to composition.
1:1658
Because the union of the Word with the flesh alone came about by way of assumption, since he pre-existed, and willed to empty himself for union with flesh.
1:1659
因為就一切按本性而複合的事物而言,並非某物與另一物藉「領受」方式的相遇,構成了該種類、如同整體由部分合成那樣的組成;
For in the case of all things generally composite by nature, it is not the coming-together of this with that by way of assumption that produces the constitution of the species, as a whole out of parts;
1:1660
but the simultaneous coming-into-being of the parts from non-being into being, according to their coming-together with one another at the very moment of their being, produces the composition of the whole.
1:1661
然而,我們的主、神、救主耶穌基督的奧祕,並非以此方式發生;
But the mystery of our Lord and God and Savior Jesus Christ did not come about in this manner;
1:1662
而是這樣的:他本質上就是神,按本性是神的兒子,單純而無形體,與父同永恆,又是萬世代的創造者——他出於愛人的意旨,甘願藉領受肉身而成為人;
but he, existing by nature as God, and by nature Son of God, simple and incorporeal, and co-eternal with the Father, and creator of all the ages, willing by a will that loves mankind, became man by way of assumption of flesh;
1:1663
將人性之極卑(末端)召回於自身、且予以提升,那單純的耶穌正是不可言喻地由此構成的;
calling back to himself, and raising up, the extremity of humanity, out of which the simple Jesus was ineffably compounded;
1:1664
並且,那永恆者已取得了時間性的延展;
and the eternal one has taken on temporal extension;
1:1665
並且,那超越實存地超逸出一切按本性而有之秩序者,已進入了我們人類的本性之中。所以,如果這事的發生並非依照複合事物之本性的法則與秩序,而是依照另一種超乎複合事物本性的法則;
and he who has transcended, super-substantially, every order according to nature has come to be within our nature. If, then, this happened not according to the law and order of the nature of composite things, but by another law beyond the nature of composite things;
1:1666
因為神的道乃是藉著「領受」、以不可言喻的方式,與肉身相構成的;
for it was by way of assumption, ineffably, that the Word of God was composed with the flesh;
1:1667
而非藉由與肉身一同生成、以獲得為要組成而有的存在,如同一般為成全某種按種類而言的整體那樣——正如真理之道向眾人響亮宣告的那樣;
but not by receiving his being for composition together with the flesh by way of generation, unto the completion of some whole according to species, as the account of truth resoundingly cries aloud to all;
1:1668
in vain do the ignorant lawlessly attempt to subject to the laws that fall under nature that composition which transcends every boundary and principle of nature.
1:1669
and it preserves unconfused the difference between the assuming Word himself and the assumed flesh, even after the union.
1:1670
But he who does not confess that God the Word became man unchangeably by way of assumption of flesh will not, in any manner whatsoever, be able truly to confess any of the things stated.
1:1671
For how, if the Word did not pre-exist without beginning, could he, by will, assume flesh differing from himself in essence?
1:1672
正是在此基督身上,我認為,那「按領受而有的、屬異類本性者之聯合」才最為本真地被如此稱說;
in whose case especially, as I suppose, the union of that which is of another nature is properly said to have come about by way of assumption;
1:1673
因為唯獨他、且僅以此獨特的方式,無所受苦地且真實地領受了那本質相異者,並在一切道理與方式上,持守自身不變易、不被增多,也使那被領受者不被改易;
inasmuch as he alone, and alone in this manner, impassibly and truly assumed that which is of another essence, and preserved himself unchangeable in every principle and manner, and unmultiplied, and kept the thing assumed unaltered;
1:1674
這在受造的本性之中,是不可能發生的;
which is impossible to come about in the case of created nature;
1:1675
因為在受造本性之中,一切複合皆是隨著諸部分的生成、依其瞬間彼此聚合而自然發生的,為要成全某種按種類而言的整體,並在整體之中,保持諸部分彼此間相稱的比例;
in the case of which every composition naturally comes to be simultaneously with the origination of the parts, unto the completion of some whole according to species, according to the parts' sudden concurrence with one another, preserving throughout the whole an equal proportion of the parts to one another;
1:1676
just as is the case with us, and with as many things as have obtained a composite nature according to species.
1:1677
For in our case the soul has, corresponding to its own operations, the natural powers of the body, since the body is by nature receptive of them, on account of the soul's own sudden origination together with the flesh unto being.
1:1678
但神的道,絕不在任何道理或方式上,擁有與其自身按本性而有之諸運作相稱的、屬於祂所領受之本性的那些能力;
But God the Word, having in no principle or manner the powers of the nature assumed by him corresponding to his own natural operations;
1:1679
因為那超越本性者,不受本性所度量;
for that which is above nature is not measured by nature;
1:1680
nor is there anything whatsoever among existing things that is by nature receptive of him.
1:1681
因此,唯獨祂藉由取了受理性與理智所賦生氣的肉身,出於意願而不可言喻地成為人;
Therefore he alone, by the assumption of flesh animated rationally and intellectually, willingly and ineffably became man;
1:1682
祂本是存在者,且是先在者,又是全能者;
as one who is and who pre-existed, and who is capable of all things;
1:1683
innovating the natures by the mode that is above nature, in order that he might save man.
1:1684
這信仰是我所學習、且蒙受教導的——既得自我們已先行離世的聖潔蒙福的教父們,也得自現今在世、受託掌舵神聖大公教會之舵、並正確地將她駛向神聖旨意之港的那些人;
This is the faith I learned, and was taught, both from our holy and blessed Fathers who have already departed this life, and from those now living who have been entrusted with the helm of the catholic holy Church of God, and who rightly steer her toward the harbor of the divine will;
1:1685
懷抱著這信仰——藉著他們的代求——我也將辭別此世、離開這現世的生命;
with which faith, by their supplications, I shall also depart when I leave this present life;
1:1686
offering to God, in place of every dignity, this confession, undefiled and unstained, and higher than every heretical storm.
1:1687
For I have no life adorned with the works of righteousness to boast of, having become, throughout my entire life here, a willful transgressor of the divine laws.
1:1688
這些事,我的蒙福的主人們,我已盡可能簡要地寫給你們,好叫你們知道——若我所寫的有任何益處——你們該如何、即或僅在某種程度上,驅逐那些披著羊皮的狼;牠們以毫無意義的吠叫恐嚇基督聖潔羊群中神聖而溫馴的羊,也使你們不致被那狡詐地偽裝成真理的謊言所裹挾;
And these things I have written to you, my blessed lords, as concisely as was possible, so that you may know—if there be anything useful in what has been written—how, even to some extent, you may drive away the wolves clothed in sheepskin, who with their meaningless howling terrify the divine and gentle sheep of Christ's holy flock, and that you may not be carried away by falsehood that maliciously feigns truth;
1:1689
The voices of the Fathers, as advocates of the ecclesiastical faith, I have not for the time being been able to insert into this letter, on account of my great lack of books here.
1:1690
For there where you are, you have my blessed lord, father and teacher, the lord abbot Sophronius, who is truly sober-minded and a wise advocate of the truth, and an unconquered champion of the divine dogmas, mighty to contend both in deed and in word against every heresy, who, along with all his other virtues, is rich in a multitude of divine books, and who eagerly enriches those who wish to learn the divine things.
1:1691
Frequenting him, therefore, you will, I know well, obtain the correct and unerring knowledge of all the divine and salvific dogmas.
1:1692
By the same author, to the same addressee, a dogmatic letter.
1:1693
God, being good by nature, does nothing of what he is naturally disposed to do that is evil.
1:1694
But man, becoming good through the diligence of his intention, is always shown to rejoice in the things which God is naturally disposed to do.
1:1695
For man has no other criterion for being good, except solely his sympathetic disposition toward that which is done by God.
1:1696
因為行善之事乃神所專有;
For the doing of good things is proper to God;
1:1697
but to man belongs the sympathetic disposition toward them.
1:1698
For it is the virtue of a man to show that what has been done by God is cherished by the disposition of his intention.
1:1699
Therefore, if everything that has God as the cause of its own coming-into-being is good, then reasonably the union of things that stand apart is good, and indeed the greatest of goods, since it constitutes a manifest work of God.
1:1700
And if this is altogether true, I know that you rejoice to see those who have been scattered gathered together into one, being good men yourselves on account of your sympathetic disposition toward good things.
1:1701
and if there should be need to lodge, on his behalf, an entreaty before the pope honored by God, so that he might recover his own rank of ministry in the Church in which he had been appointed, do not hesitate to do so.
1:1702
因為他如此真誠地接納了教會神聖教義的虔敬教訓,以致他甚至為此熱切地辯護,並且深知這是虔敬的界限與法則:即在那不可言喻的合一之後,對於基督之所是,毫無所拒絕承認的;
For so genuinely did the pious man embrace the teaching of the Church's divine dogmas, that he even fervently championed it, and knew this to be the boundary and ordinance of piety: to deny nothing of what Christ is, after the ineffable union—
1:1703
being truly, at once and in the same subject, both God and man.
1:1704
因為祂在真實地成為祂原先所不是的之時,並未拋棄祂原先所是的;
For he did not cast off what he was, in truly becoming what he was not;
1:1705
祂也未因持守祂原先所是的,而改變祂所成為的;
nor did he alter what he became, by remaining what he had been;
1:1706
反而祂按位格整全地、依本性兼具兩者;
but he is wholly both, naturally, according to hypostasis;
1:1707
as one out of both, and through his one self preserving both, without alteration and without diminution, inasmuch as he truly is these natures according to the union that is according to hypostasis.
1:1708
因為按位格的合一,是與「分割」相對立,而非與「按此合一者之本性的差異」相對立;它使前者(分割)徹底消除,卻使後者(本性的差異)得到堅固的保存;
For the hypostatic union, standing in opposition to division, but not to the natural difference of the things united according to it, effects the complete removal of the former, but produces the firm preservation of the latter;
1:1709
of which number constitutes an indication.
1:1710
因為沒有人能設想一種完全不含數量的差異;
Since no one could ever conceive of a difference that is wholly devoid of quantity;
1:1711
even if he be most wise in argumentation and most formidable in contention.
1:1712
For as long as the parts of the composite whole, out of which the whole is constituted, are preserved without confusion, the natural difference of the parts of the whole preserved in union, one from another, is not unrecognized—
1:1713
how number is indicative of quantity.
1:1714
但既然數目本性上是用來表徵數量,而非表徵關係,那麼,凡在合一之後虔誠地僅為表明基督裡所保存之、其所由之而成的諸本性之差異而使用數目者,他絕不因此分裂那合一,而僅是認知到諸本性在合一之後仍不相混淆地存留;
But if number is by nature suited to indicate quantity, and not relation, then he who, piously, uses number after the union solely for the indication of the difference—preserved in Christ—of the natures of which he consists, does not at all divide the union, but only knows that the natures have remained unconfused after the union;
1:1715
out of which the one Christ and Lord and Son and God exists, namely, having been made flesh, and having fully become man.
