1:237
那船隻駛過之後,再無蹤跡可尋,其龍骨在波浪間所行的路徑也無從尋覓;
of which, once it has passed, no trace is to be found, nor the path of its keel amid the waves;
1:238
or as when a bird flies through the air, no evidence of its passage is found.
1:239
這一切都已消逝,卻留給我們這把火作為產業,直存留至萬世萬代;
All those things have passed away, leaving us this fire as an inheritance, abiding unto all ages;
1:240
因為我們如此複述同樣的話,此後將永不止息;
for saying the same things, we shall henceforth never cease;
1:241
我們曾被召喚,卻不肯聽從;
we were being called, and we would not obey;
1:242
we were being admonished, and we paid no heed.
1:243
Concerning these terrors we were taught every day, and we despised what was said.
1:244
當時,關於這些事的話語,絲毫不曾使我們憂傷;
The words concerning these things did not grieve us then, not even a little;
1:245
但如今,這些事實本身卻如此劇烈地使我們憂傷;
but now the realities themselves grieve us so exceedingly;
1:246
What now besets our life we considered mere nonsense, though it was then repeatedly chanted to us.
1:247
ὤ τῶν κακῶν (==) βουλευμάτων!
O wicked counsels!
1:248
O evil dealings!
1:249
O the wonder of God's just sentence concerning us in these matters!
1:250
How he has given back to us, for each kind of our sins, a fitting torment!
1:251
我們被判處要居住在這幽暗與可怖的黑暗之中,因為我們曾喜愛一切可恥之事——無論是所見、所聞或所言之事;
We have been condemned to dwell in this gloom and dreadful darkness, since we loved all shameful things — sights, and things heard, and words;
1:252
並且,我們竟將賽馬、劇院與狩獵之戲,置於一切神聖美善之事之上,優先看重之;
and above all the divine goods together, we preferred horse-races and theaters and hunting-spectacles;
1:253
在那些場所中,成群的邪魔起舞歡騰,而藉由天使而來的一切神聖眷顧與知悉皆全然缺席;
in which throngs of demons danced, and from which all divine oversight and knowledge through angels was absent;
1:254
在那裡,貞潔自制的莊重,以諸般方式遭受褻瀆凌辱;
where the dignity of temperance was outraged in many ways;
1:255
while the evil and loathsome vice of licentiousness was openly extolled as though venerable.
1:256
我們竟玷污了自己的眼、耳與舌頭;
but we defiled our eyes and ears and tongue;
1:257
or rather, through these we corrupted the soul that had been made according to the image of God, by all the sights and sounds and words hated by God, and by our envious ill-will against one another.
1:258
我們被拋入塔耳塔羅斯(幽冥深淵)之中,同時飽受冰凍凝結與深淵之苦,備受煎熬;
We have been cast down into Tartarus, terribly worn away at once by both icy congealment and the depth;
1:259
因為我們竟將驕傲,看得比那崇高、且是崇高神聖之事之媒介的謙卑更為優先;
since we preferred pride over the lofty humility that is the procurer of lofty and divine things;
1:260
and we thrust away the firmness and rigor of virtue, on account of the excessive softness and dissoluteness of the flesh.
1:261
Where now is our pride, and the boastful disposition toward all that came from it, and the sluggish and easily-dissolving softness of the flesh?
1:262
Instead of unrestrained laughter, and the licentious noise of our cheeks, this heavy gnashing of teeth is now ours.
1:263
Having refused to practice the learning of divine and saving words, but having preferred the immoderation of drunkenness to divine praise expressed through word, we are now terribly punished, our tongue being consumed by a fearful thirst.
1:264
And we reap, as a fitting fruit of our hatred toward our brothers, and of envy and deceit and hypocrisy — out of which and through which comes murder — and of slander and false accusation, and of the harboring of grudges and falsehood and perjury, this sleepless worm, which insatiably devours the depth of our soul.
1:265
因為我們扭曲了愛的正直,使自己的心變得彎曲;又敗壞了真理的無情,使真理本身也隨之變得歪斜;
Since we perverted the straightness of love and made our heart crooked, and corrupted the passionlessness of truth and warped it;
1:266
having, through voluntary hatred, fashioned for ourselves an involuntary evil worm, and having, through falsehood, dug out a more wicked crookedness, on account of which we were not united to the God who is straight and upright.
1:267
因此,我們所領受的,正與我們所行的相稱;更確切地說,我們所得的報應,正與我們自己按己意而生的心志相稱;
We receive, therefore, things worthy of what we have done; or rather, we are given wages worthy of our own disposition according to our intention;
1:268
以享樂之火,換來地獄之火;
for the fire of pleasure, the fire of Gehenna;
1:269
以無知與短暫欺妄之黑暗,換來永恆的黑暗;
and for the darkness of ignorance and of temporary deceit, eternal darkness;
1:270
以那藉仇恨與謊言使心變得彎曲歪斜的蟲,換來一條施刑不眠的蟲;
and for the worm that, through hatred and falsehood, made the heart crooked and warped, a punishing and sleepless worm;
1:271
以雙頰放蕩喧鬧的笑聲與爆發,換來〔切齒的〕喧響與咬牙聲;
and for the licentious noise and eruption of our cheeks, noise and gnashing of teeth;
1:272
and for the height of vain pride and dissoluteness, a fall and a yawning, immeasurable depth, and the gloominess of terror-stricken cowering.
1:273
And, simply put, for each of our voluntary evils, we justly receive in return the involuntary punishment fitting to each.
1:274
What kept us wretches from quenching the fire of the flesh through fasting and vigil and the study of divine words — good and easy means of extinguishing that fire — so that we might not now be roasted by this fire?
1:275
〔為何我們沒有〕使我們的眼、耳與舌習慣於〔美善之事〕,以致我們如今不致陷入這幽暗,與這最沉重的靜默;
Why did we not accustom our eyes and ears and tongue to good things, so that we might not now have this gloom, and this most oppressive silence;
1:276
but that we too might enjoy the light and the Word and the wisdom of God together with the saints, having become beholders and hearers and hymn-singers of the divine glory.
1:277
If, through love, we had put to death the voluntary worm of hatred, and through truth had made falsehood vanish, we would now be free of this burning worm, and of the rest of the terrors that now beset our life.
1:278
We do not find what we did not seek.
1:279
天國之門並未向我們敞開,因為我們未曾藉著實行,去叩擊德行之門;
The door of the kingdom of heaven is not opened to us, because we did not knock upon the door of the virtues through practice;
1:280
We do not receive the enjoyment of eternal goods, because we did not ask, through prayer, for the grace of knowledge.
1:281
For we had no love at all for divine things, but having bound our mind to earthly things, we corrupted our whole life together with them.
1:282
And all those things, vanishing like smoke, have passed away, but the account of the judgment concerning them remains forever, never passing away.
1:283
而這些事,那些人或許將彼此談論——他們從自己所受的苦中,重新領悟神聖公義的大能,藉此概略地把握其義;
And these things, perhaps, those souls will say to one another, relearning from what they suffer the power of divine justice, so as to grasp it, as it were, in summary form;
1:284
But who shall I, wretched one, become?
1:285
Relying on what deeds shall I hope to be delivered from the fearful condemnation, being destitute of all virtue and knowledge?
1:286
我竟甘願以諸情(πάθεσιν)捆綁了靈魂的實踐能力,又阻攔了靈魂的腳步,使其偏離那福音生活方式的神聖行程;
seeing that I have voluntarily bound the practical powers of the soul with the passions, and have hindered the steps of the soul from the divine course of the evangelical way of life;
1:287
我有禍了,為那可畏的羞恥,它將永無止境——除非我悔改轉變,脫離我諸多的罪惡而得自由;
Woe is me for the fearful shame, which will never have an end, unless, having changed, I become free of my many evils;
1:288
我有禍了,為那哭泣、苦澀的眼淚,並切齒之聲——除非我終能儆醒,縱使為時已晚,抖落怠惰的沉睡,脫去罪惡污穢的衣裳;
Woe is me for the weeping, and the bitter tears, and the gnashing of teeth, unless, becoming sober even late at last, I shake off the deep sleep of negligence, and strip off the filthy garment of sin;
1:289
then, instead of ease, punishment and anguish will altogether receive me.
1:290
And what indeed is most pitiable of all—or, to speak more truly, more grievous—a thing which pains me even to say alone;
1:291
若真正經歷這事——基督啊,求你施恩憐憫,救我們脫離這痛苦——與神及祂聖潔的諸能力(δυνάμεων)隔絕,又將是何等更甚呢;
how much more, actually to suffer it—be propitious, O Christ, and save us from this anguish—the separation from God and His holy powers;
1:292
以及與魔鬼和眾惡魔的親近相屬,永遠長存不息;
and the kinship with the devil and the evil demons, remaining forever;
1:293
and having no prospect of deliverance from these terrors.
1:294
For with whomever, in this present age, through our evil practices, we have willingly and deliberately chosen to associate, with these same we shall fittingly, of necessity, be condemned to be in the age to come, even against our will.
1:295
而比一切刑罰更為刑罰、更為可怖的,乃是要永遠與那些彼此憎恨、又彼此被憎恨的人同在——即便沒有酷刑也是如此,更何況再加上酷刑呢;
And it is more punishing and more terrible than every punishment, to be forever together with those who hate and are hated, even apart from torments, let alone together with them;
1:296
but to be separated from him who loves and is loved.
1:297
因為神雖然本性既是愛、也被稱為愛(ἀγάπη),但在祂公義審判之時,卻仍被那些受審判者所憎恨;
For God, judging justly, is hated by those being judged, though He is by nature both love and is called love;
1:298
而祂卻並不憎恨那些受審判的人;
yet He does not hate those being judged;
1:299
for He is altogether by nature free from passion.
1:300
蒙愛的人啊,既然我們相信這一切必真實無誤地成就,那麼讓我們不可忽略自己;
Believing that these things will truly and without falsehood come to pass, O beloved, let us not neglect ourselves;
1:301
but with all diligence, with our whole strength, while we have opportunity, let us flee the deceiving world and the ruler of this world.
1:302
For it passes away, and all things in it wither.
1:303
因為必真有這樣的時候,必有這樣的時刻:那時將有一支可畏的號角吹響,發出奇異的聲音,而這整個世界都將被消解,脫離其目前所見的秩序而崩解;
For truly there will be, there will be a time, when a fearful trumpet will sound, uttering a strange voice, and this whole [world] will be dissolved, falling away from the order now seen in it;
1:304
而這可見的世界將要過去,領受其自身的終結;
And the visible world will pass away, receiving its own end;
1:305
但那如今隱藏的、屬於可理知者(νοητῶν)的世界,將要顯現出來,帶來對眼睛、耳朵與心思而言全然陌生的奧秘;
but the world of intelligible things, now hidden, will appear, bringing mysteries entirely strange to eyes, ears, and minds;
1:306
剎那之間,驟然使無數人的身體,彷彿從死亡的某種睡眠中甦醒起來,引領他們接受審查;
all at once, and suddenly it will raise up myriads of human bodies, as if from a sleep, out of death, leading them to examination;
1:307
and God will render to each just recompenses worthy of what he did through the body, whether good or bad, giving to all beings a great, fearful, and final closure.
1:308
但願我們眾人,都能持有那使人得救的、對地獄的懼怕,以及對天國的珍貴渴慕〔其實嚴格說來,這兩者可說是同一回事,因為神在萬事上,於眾人乃是「成為一切、且被稱為一切」;
But may it be granted to all of us to have both the saving fear of Gehenna and the honorable longing for the kingdom of heaven [and indeed it is proper to say the same thing concerning both, since God becomes and is called all things to all;
1:309
依照各人所具有之惡或德的性質而定〕——但願我們能不間斷地將這二者常存於眼前;
according as each one has a quality of vice or of virtue]—to have these unceasingly before our eyes;
1:310
一方面,懼怕使我們完全遠離並止息諸惡;
the fear, on the one hand, producing in us complete abstention from evils and cessation from them;
1:311
and the longing, on the other hand, exhorting us abundantly and cheerfully toward deeds of good.
1:312
蒙福的人啊,願這些話——出自我這卑微貧乏之人——成為我對你之愛的印記,為要守護並確保你已擁有的美善得以穩固;
Let these things from me, the small and poor one, O blessed one, be tokens of my love toward you, for the guarding and security of the good qualities present in you;
1:313
which I suppose you to need, even though you are so greatly adorned in every respect with virtues.
1:314
For I am not able to repay you justly for your many kindnesses toward me, in any other way than by disposing myself in this manner.
1:315
與我一同,所有因你之故而寄居於此地的可敬諸位教父,也都齊心真誠地問候你;他們晝夜不停、含淚懇求神,求祂使我們的喬治得享健康、歸返我們身邊——這位無論觀之或稱之皆真正甘甜可親之人;
And together with me, sincerely and with one accord, all the honored Fathers who dwell in this region on your account send greetings, unceasingly beseeching God night and day with tears, to restore to us in health our George, who is truly sweet both to behold and to name;
1:316
好叫我們得以與他一同無害地度過今生,並將來能享受那慈愛世人的神——賜諸善之施予者——所賜的恩典;
so that together with him we may pass through this present life unharmed, and may enjoy the grace to come from God, who loves mankind and is the Giver of good things;
1:317
留意:論人的本原;
Observe, concerning the origin of man:
1:318
何者當尋求並意願;
what one must seek and desire;
1:319
and what one must yield to God.
1:320
That ruling and being ruled, and being rich and being poor, belong neither to nature nor to intention, but to the Providence that guides all things.
1:321
Definition of what is in our power, that is, of free self-determination.
1:322
Definition of what is not in our power, that is, of what is not subject to free self-determination.
1:323
他所稱的「兩端」乃是生成(γένεσις)與敗壞(φθορά),而受生者(τό γενητόν)則是介於生成與敗壞之間的中項;
He calls generation and corruption the extremes, and that which is generated is the mean between generation and corruption;
1:324
在此情形中,敗壞往往先於生成而發生;
in which case corruption often anticipates generation;
1:325
entering in together with generation upon the thing coming into being, and corrupting its constitution even before it has come to be.
1:326
他說:凡靈魂因與感官的關係而被牢牢釘住(προσηλουμένην)的人,即便他們已停止那些取悅感官的諸情(πάθη),仍不能得救,除非他們使靈魂完全脫離與感官的這種關係;
Those who have their soul fastened to the attachment of the senses are not saved, he says, even if they cease from the passions that delight the senses, unless they completely remove the soul from its attachment to the senses;
1:327
just as even blessed Lot, had he not gone out from Sodom, even though he did not do the deeds of the Sodomites, would not have escaped the descent of the fire.
1:328
By the same [author], to John the Cubicularius, concerning love.
1:329
……如此說道,好叫你們也擁有這神聖的特質,即在德行上那不可限定、無有界限之性(ἀπερίγραφον καί ἀόριστον);
it is said, so that you may also possess this divine [quality], namely, that which is uncircumscribed and unbounded according to virtue;
1:330
就是不僅善待眼前之人,也甘心樂意地善待那不在眼前、甚至相隔遙遠地理距離之人;
namely, not only to do good to those who are present, but also to be eager to do good to those who are absent, even those separated by a great distance of place;
1:331
我每每藉著從那裡到此地來的人,得知你這〔愛〕日益增長,不僅如此,也藉著你尊貴的書信,彷彿透過一面鏡子,映照出那在你身上煥發、屬神恩典的美好形貌,因此我理所當然地感到歡喜快樂;
and learning each time of its increase in extent through those who arrive here, and not only so but also through your honored letters, as though picturing to myself, as through a mirror, the form of divine grace that becomingly shines in you, I fittingly rejoice and am glad;
1:332
並且我不住地為你們感謝那賜諸善之神,且與聖使徒一同呼喊,從不止息;
and giving thanks on your behalf to God, the Giver of good things, I do not cease crying out together with the holy Apostle;
1:333
"Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed you with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places;"
1:334
我尤其確信並知曉,你聖潔的靈魂在靈裡藉著愛,與我這卑微者不可分解地相繫連結,以恩典之律法為友愛的紐帶;依此紐帶,你們無形中將我與自己相連,使我同得光彩,藉著將你們自身的美善與我相比並列,抹去我因罪而生的羞恥;
being especially persuaded, and knowing that your holy soul is indissolubly bound in spirit through love to my wretched [soul], having the law of grace as a friendly bond, according to which, invisibly joining me to yourselves, you brighten me together with yourselves, effacing my shame from sin by the juxtaposition of your own good qualities;
1:335
因為實在沒有任何事物比神聖之愛更肖似於神(θεοειδέστερον),也沒有更奧秘者,更沒有對世人邁向神化(θέωσις)而言更為崇高之事;
For truly nothing is more God-like than divine love, nor more mysterious, nor loftier for human beings toward deification;
1:336
因為愛將萬事都涵括於自身之中,擁有一切美善之事,就是真理之道(λόγος)在德行之各種形態上所闡述的一切;
because, having comprehended all things within itself, it possesses all the good things, as many as the word of truth expounds under the form of virtue;
1:337
並且它與一切被涵括於惡之形態下的事物毫無關聯、全然隔絕,因為它正是律法與先知的總歸(πλήρωμα);
and it is utterly estranged from all things comprehended under the form of vice, as being the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets;
1:338
which the mystery of love succeeds, the mystery which makes us gods from men, and which condenses the particular commandments to the universal principle of the commandments, by which all are contained uniformly according to good pleasure, and from which they are issued forth in manifold ways according to economy.
1:339
For what form of good things does love not possess?
1:340
〔它豈不擁有〕信(πίστις)嗎?那是敬虔諸事的首要根基,使擁有它的人對神的存在、以及對神聖之事,得著完全的確信;
Does it not possess faith, the first foundation of matters pertaining to piety, which fully assures the one who has it that God exists, and of divine things;
1:341
and more than the eye, touching upon the surfaces of sensible things, provides to those who see the opinion concerning them?
1:342
Does it not possess hope, which makes the good that truly subsists to subsist for itself, and holds it more firmly than the hand grasps the thickest matter that falls under touch?
1:343
Does it not give the enjoyment of the things believed and hoped for, having through itself, according to disposition, the things to come as though present?
1:344
Does it not possess humility, the first foundation of the virtues, by which one becomes acquainted with oneself, and is able [variant: we are able] to cast down the vain swelling of pride?
1:345
Does it not possess gentleness, through which we buffet away both blame and praise, and thrust away the disturbance of those diametrically opposed evils, I mean glory and disgrace?
1:346
Does it not possess gentle forbearance in suffering, by which, even when suffering wrong, we remain unchanged toward those who do evil, being disposed toward them with no hostility whatsoever?
1:347
〔它豈不擁有〕憐憫(ἔλεος)嗎?藉此,我們甘願將他人的患難視為己有;
Does it not possess mercy, by which we willingly make the misfortunes of others our own;
1:348
and we do not permit our kinship and common nature [with them] to go unrecognized?
1:349
Does it not possess self-control, and endurance, and long-suffering, and goodness, and peace and joy, by which we easily calm anger and desire, and their burning fervor and inflammation?
1:350
And simply, to speak concisely, love is the end of all good things, leading and bringing those who walk in it toward God—the highest of goods with respect to Him, and the cause of every good—being itself faithful, unfailing, and abiding.
1:351
For faith is the foundation of what comes after it — I mean hope and love — firmly establishing the truth.
1:352
Hope is the strength of the two extremes — I mean love and faith — manifesting through itself both the trustworthiness [of faith] and, for both, that which is beloved, and teaching [the soul] to make its course toward that goal through itself.
1:353
Love is the fulfillment of these, embracing wholly, as a whole, the ultimate object of desire, and providing to them [faith and hope] a rest from the motion toward it, introducing in their place — instead of believing that it is and hoping that it will be present — the enjoyment of it as [already] present, through itself.
1:354
它使人顯明為人,以理性明智地使那在乎我們者〔即自由抉擇〕服從;
It presents him, [as] being a man, wisely subjecting to reason that which is within our power;
1:355
然而卻不使理性向此〔即在乎我們者〕屈就;
yet without bending reason to this [i.e., to what is in our power];
1:356
並勸服意念依本性而行,絕不與本性之理相爭;
and persuading the intention (γνώμη) to walk according to nature, in no way rebelling against the principle of nature;
1:357
according to which [principle] we are all able to have, just as one nature, so also one intention and one will toward God and toward one another, having no separation from God and from one another, whenever we choose to conform to the law of grace, through which we renew, according to intention, the law of nature.
1:358
For it is impossible for those who have not first been joined to God in concord to be able to agree with one another in intention.
1:359
因為起初那欺騙人的魔鬼,藉著由自愛惡毒設計出的詭計,藉快樂之侵襲行騙,便使我們在意念上與上帝、與彼此分離,顛倒了正直,並依此方式分裂了本性,將其切割為眾多意見與幻想,又隨著時間將每一種惡的方法與發明立為法則,共同利用我們自身趨向此〔惡〕的能力,並在眾人之中植入了使惡得以持存的邪惡支柱——即意念上的不相容;
For since, at the beginning, the devil who deceived man — having deceived [him] by a deceit maliciously contrived through self-love, through the assault of pleasure — separated us from God and from one another in intention, having perverted what was upright, and having in this manner divided nature, cut it up into many opinions and fantasies, and established over time, as a law, the method and invention for each evil, making common use of our own faculties toward this [end], and implanting in all a wicked support for the persistence of evil — namely, incompatibility according to intention;
1:360
from which [point] he once persuaded man to turn away from the motion according to nature, and to move his desire from what was permitted toward what was forbidden, and [persuaded him] to establish for himself three greatest and primal evils, generative — simply put — of all vice:
1:361
namely, ignorance, I say, and self-love, [and] tyranny — [these three being] dependent on one another and constituted through one another.
1:362
因為由對上帝之無知,生出自愛;
For from ignorance concerning God comes self-love;
1:363
而由此〔自愛〕,便生出對同類之暴虐;
and from this [self-love] comes tyranny toward one's kin;
1:364
and no argument will contradict this —
1:365
因這些〔惡〕乃是藉著誤用我們自身的官能——即理性、欲望與怒氣——而構成自身;
since these [evils] have constituted themselves through the misuse of [our] own faculties, namely reason, desire, and spiritedness;
1:366
然而本應是,理性當以認識取代無知,唯獨朝向上帝而動,以尋求祂;
whereas it was fitting that reason, instead of ignorance, be moved solely toward God through knowledge, in seeking [Him];
1:367
又當藉欲望,使人潔淨於自愛之情,唯獨因愛慕而被推向上帝;
and that, through desire, [one], pure of the passion of self-love, be driven by longing toward God alone;
1:368
且當使怒氣脫離暴虐,而致力於唯獨得著上帝;
and that, with spiritedness separated from tyranny, one strive to obtain God alone;
1:369
and that [these faculties] fashion the divine and blessed love that arises from them and for whose sake they exist — the love that joins [us] to God, and renders the God-loving [man] to be God.
1:370
既然這一切乃依人自己之意願、卻藉魔鬼之詭詐而惡劣地臨到人身上,那既造成本性、又睿智地醫治其因惡而衰弱之本性的上帝,便因對我們的愛,自我倒空,取了奴僕之形,依位格不變地將此〔本性〕與自己聯合,全然照著我們、出於我們、為了我們而成為人,以致在不信者看來,竟被視為並非上帝;
Since these things came about badly concerning man, according to man's own will, yet through the deceit of the devil, God — who both made [our] nature and wisely heals it now that it has been weakened by evil — on account of His love toward us, emptied Himself, taking the form of a slave, uniting this [nature] to Himself hypostatically, without change, becoming wholly like us, from us, for our sake, so [fully] man that to the unbelieving He was reckoned not to be God;
1:371
儘管祂實在是上帝,正如那不可言喻、真實的敬虔教義向信徒所立定的一般——為要毀滅魔鬼的作為,並將未受玷污的諸官能歸還給本性,重新更新愛之力量——此力乃自愛之敵——使人重歸與祂聯合,並使世人彼此聯合;
although He was God to the very degree that the ineffable and true doctrine of piety lays down for the faithful — in order that He might destroy the works of the devil, and, restoring to nature its faculties undefiled, might renew again the power of love, [the power] opposed to self-love, [directed] toward union with Him and toward one another among men;
1:372
——〔自愛〕,它既是、也被認作為首罪之母,是魔鬼之首生,亦是其後諸情之母;
— [self-love, which] is and is known to be the mother of the first sin, and the first offspring of the devil, and [mother] of the passions that followed it;
1:373
which [self-love], having through love annihilated it, He who showed Himself worthy of God annihilated together with it also the whole throng of vice, which had no other foundation or cause for existing after this [self-love was destroyed].
1:374
因為這樣的人不再認識驕傲——那反上帝之自負的標記,那複合而怪異之惡;
For such a one no longer knows pride, the mark of god-opposing self-conceit, that composite and monstrous evil;
1:375
他不曉得那墜落的虛榮,它連同因它而自高自大之人一併摔倒;
he is ignorant of vainglory, which falls, and casts down with itself those who are puffed up on account of it;
1:376
他藉自願的善意,使同類成為己所親,由此使嫉妒枯萎——嫉妒本先公正地使懷有它者自身枯萎;
he withers envy, which first justly withers those who possess it, by making his kinsmen his own through voluntary goodwill;
1:377
and he strips away together wrath, and bloodshed, and anger, and guile, and hypocrisy, and irony, and rancor, and greed, and all [the passions] by which the one man has been fragmented.
1:378
——因為若此〔自愛〕不存在,則任何邪惡之形式或痕跡皆絕無可能存留;
— since, if this [self-love] does not exist, no form or trace of vice whatsoever can subsist at all;
1:379
反倒是諸般美德之形式取而代之,成全愛之力量——此愛聚集一切已分裂者,依循單一之理與單一之式重新造就人,並使一切存於眾人之中、依意念而生的不平等與差異得以平等、齊一;
but all the forms of virtue are introduced in its place, which fulfill the power of love — [love] that gathers together what has been divided, and again fashions man according to one principle and one mode, and equalizes and levels all the inequality and difference in intention that exists in all;
1:380
並依理將人推進至那值得稱許的不平等,亦即:各人依己意,將鄰人吸引向自己,且以先前急於排斥、超越鄰人之同等程度,轉而尊崇鄰人過於自己;
and rightly advances them toward that praiseworthy inequality, [namely] each one obviously drawing his neighbor toward himself in purpose, and preferring him to himself, to the very degree that he was formerly eager to repel him and to surpass him;
1:381
並為此〔愛〕之故,自願使自己脫離自己,亦即脫離那依意念而被特別設想為屬於他個人的諸理與諸特質;
and voluntarily releasing himself from himself for its sake, by the separation from the principles and properties conceived particularly about him according to [his own] intention;
1:382
並被聚集為一種單純與同一,依此,無人以任何方式與共通者分離,反倒各人與各人為一、眾人與眾人為一,且與上帝相合尤勝於彼此相合——他們被構成為一,在自身之內顯明出那唯一之存在之理,依本性與依意念皆為獨一無二;
and being gathered together into one simplicity and identity, according to which no one is in any way whatsoever separated from what is common, but each is one with each, and all with all, and rather with God than with one another — they are constituted as one, having manifest in themselves the one principle of being, wholly single both by nature and by intention;
1:383
並顯明那在此〔理〕中被觀想的上帝;
and [manifest] the God who is contemplated in this [principle];
1:384
with whom [that principle] is naturally contemplated together, and toward whom, as cause and maker, it is raised up — namely, the principle of the being of beings — which by nature is preserved pure and undefiled through our complete attentiveness, and is purified, through prudent zeal by means of the virtues and the labors that accompany them, from the passions that rebel against it.
1:385
這一點,那位偉大的亞伯拉罕或許已然成就,他使自己歸復於本性存在之理,或使此理歸復於自己,並藉此既被歸還給上帝,又重新領受了上帝;
This, perhaps, that great Abraham accomplished, having restored himself to the principle of the being of nature — or [having restored] that principle to himself — and, through this, having been rendered to God, and having received God back;
1:386
兩種說法皆可成立,因為真理在二者中皆可被觀想到;
let both be said, since the truth is contemplated in both;
1:387
即他既蒙算為配得以人之形看見上帝,又藉那依本性而完全之理、因〔上帝〕對人的愛,而得以接待祂作同居之客;
as [he] was deemed worthy to see God as a man, and to receive [Him] as a fellow-sojourner, through the perfect principle according to nature, by [His] love for mankind;
1:388
他被提升朝向祂,捨棄了一切分裂者與致使分裂者之特殊性,不再將任何他人視為與自己有異,反倒知曉那一位即是眾人,眾人即是那一位;
toward whom he was raised up, having relinquished the particularity of divided and dividing things, no longer regarding any other man as different from himself, but knowing the one as all, and all as one;
1:389
當然,並非〔知曉〕意念之〔理〕——分歧與分裂正圍繞此理而生,只要它仍與本性不相容;
not, of course, [knowing] the [principle] of intention, around which there is dissension and division, so long as it remains incompatible with nature;
1:390
而是唯獨注目於本性之理,不變性正圍繞此理而立;我們深知上帝完全與此理一同顯明,並藉此理,祂——那良善者——甘願被彰顯,以己身之受造物為己有;
but rather considering the sole principle of nature, around which invariableness stands firm, in which we know that God is altogether co-manifested, and through which He, being good, deigns to be made manifest, appropriating [as] His own [His] creatures;
1:391
since creation cannot, of itself, know Him — God — as He is.
1:392
因為依理而言,凡尚未與自身合一、成為單純,反倒依意念仍分裂為眾多部分、與本性相違者,實不能與那單純而同一者〔上帝〕相聚合——除非他先藉愛人之心,將自己的意念與本性相結合,並在此二者之上顯明出一個和平而無紛爭之理,此理絕不首先趨向上帝以外任何其他事物;
For it was not fitting, according to what is reasonable, for one who had not become identical with himself and simple, but was still divided into many parts according to intention, contrary to nature, to be gathered to the simple and identical [God] — unless he had first, through love for his fellow man, joined his intention to nature, and shown over both one peaceful and undissentious principle, moved primarily toward nothing else whatsoever among the things after God;
1:393
according to which principle nature remains uncut and undivided in those who have received this gift,
1:394
not being cut apart together with the varied differences of intention found among the many.
1:395
因為他們不再因面對這人或那人而變成不同之人,以致分裂本性;反倒對同一之人始終如一,不注視依意念而屬於各人所特有者——分裂者正是依此而分裂——而注視那依本性存於眾人之內、共通而不可分者——分裂者正是依此而被聚合;
For no longer, becoming different [persons] toward this one and that one, do they divide nature; rather, they remain the same toward the same, not looking to what is peculiar to each according to intention — whereby divided things have been divided — but to what is common and undivided in all according to nature, whereby divided things are gathered together;
1:396
bringing with itself none of the things that divide, and through which [common nature] God is made manifest to those who possess it, being formed, through love for mankind, according to the particular virtue of each, and deigning to be named from it.
1:397
因為愛之至為完全之工作,以及依其而生之運作的終極,乃是藉著關係性的相互授受,使那些藉愛而彼此結合者的諸特質與諸稱謂,得以彼此相稱地〔互通〕;
For the most perfect work of love, and the culmination of the activity proper to it, is — through a relational exchange — to bring about that the properties and the appellations of those joined together by it become fittingly [shared] with one another;
1:398
And this, perhaps, is what was said in the person of God:
1:399
"By the hands of the prophets I was likened" —
1:400
[namely,] God's self-conformation to each [prophet], out of the virtue existing in each according to practice, on account of [His] great love for mankind.
1:401
For the hand of every righteous person is his practice according to virtue,
1:402
in which, and through which, God receives likeness to men.
1:403
由此可見,愛是一項大善,亦是諸善中首要且卓絕之善,因它藉自身將上帝與致力於它的世人聯合,並使世人的造者得以顯現為人,此乃因那被神化者,依良善,朝向上帝所具之——就人所能企及而言——不變之相似;
Love, therefore, is a great good, and the first and preeminent good among goods, since through itself it joins together God and men who are occupied with it, and makes it possible for the Maker of men to appear as a man, on account of the invariable likeness — as far as attainable for man — of the one being deified toward God according to the good;
1:404
which [love], I take it, is enacted in loving the Lord God with all [one's] heart and soul and strength, and [in loving] one's neighbor as oneself.
1:405
這也就是——容我如立定義般總括地說——一種完全發乎內心、朝向首要之善的關係,並伴隨著對依本性而言整個族類全體之眷顧;
which is, if I may sum it up as in a definition, the wholly inward disposition toward the first good, together with providential care for the whole of the entire race according to nature;
1:406
after which it is impossible for the God-loving man to be raised up to anything higher, all the modes of piety having been traversed by him.
1:407
This love we both know and name — not attributing one [love] to God and another, dividedly, to the neighbor, but one and the same, whole [love] —
1:408
owed to God, yet joining men to one another.
1:409
For the activity, and the clear proof, of perfect love toward God is the genuine disposition toward the neighbor through voluntary goodwill.
1:410
For "he who does not love his brother whom he has seen," says the divine apostle John, "cannot love God whom he has not seen."
1:411
This is the way of truth, which the Word of God, having named Himself, presents — those who journey upon it, having become pure of all passions — to God the Father.
1:412
This is the door, through which he who enters becomes [one] of the saints within the Holy [of Holies], and is rendered worthy to become a beholder of the inaccessible beauty of the holy and royal Trinity.
1:413
This is the true vine, in which he who has firmly rooted himself is deemed worthy to become a partaker of the divine quality.
1:414
— having honored the creature, for the sake of the beloved Creator, to the very degree that befits the Creator, and as the principle of nature demands, legislating equal honor, and cutting away all the inequality that appears around each [person] according to prejudgment, [an inequality foreign] to nature —
1:415
and enclosing all within himself according to a single power of identity.
1:416
Truly an awesome thing, both in deed and in report!
1:417
祂以我們的本性自我穿戴,依位格不變地將此本性與自己聯合,為要使其止息漂蕩,並將這依意念而在自身之內分歧的本性,聚集歸向自己;
He clothes Himself with our nature, having united it to Himself hypostatically, without change, in order that He might halt it from being carried astray, and gather it — differentiated in itself according to intention — to Himself;
1:418
and that He might make manifest the all-glorious way of love, truly divine and deifying, and leading toward God —
1:419
且容我也如此說:〔這道路〕即是那存在著的上帝自身,而此道路起初曾被自愛之荊棘所遮蔽;
and let it also be said [that this way] is God Himself existing, which the thorns of self-love had, from the beginning, covered over;
1:420
and, having prefigured in Himself the sufferings on our behalf, that He might grant it, free of all hindrances, to all.
1:421
藉著自己的門徒,將其中的石頭拋開,正如他自己曾在眾先知中預先宣告,說:『你們要把石頭從道路上拋開』;
having cast away the stones that were in it through his own disciples, just as he himself proclaimed beforehand among the prophets, saying, "And cast the stones out of the way";
1:422
and may fittingly persuade us to hold fast both to himself and to one another to the very degree that he himself first demonstrated in his own person, having endured to suffer on our behalf.
1:423
這就是信者真實無瑕的神聖智慧,其目的即是良善與真理;
This is the true and blameless divine wisdom of the faithful, whose end is the good and the truth;
1:424
乃是愛的印記;
the tokens of love;
1:425
as it joins human beings to God and to one another, and for this reason possesses the unfailing continuance of good things.
1:426
作為這神聖蒙福之道最真誠的愛慕者,你們既已成為蒙福之人,就當為到達終點而奮力打那美好的仗,堅定持守那些能使人通往此道終點的事物;
As the most genuine lovers of this divine and blessed way, you too, having become blessed, strive the good contest to reach its end, firmly holding fast to those things by which the passage to its completion comes about;
1:427
我是指:愛人、愛弟兄、好客、愛貧者、同情、施捨、謙卑、溫柔、柔和受苦、忍耐、不動怒、恆忍、堅忍不拔、良善、寬容、善意,以及對眾人的和睦;
I mean love of humanity, love of the brethren, hospitality, love of the poor, compassion, almsgiving, humility, gentleness, gentle suffering, patience, freedom from anger, longsuffering, endurance, kindness, forbearance, goodwill, peace toward all;
1:428
from which, or through which, the grace of love, having been wrought, leads to God the man who fashioned it, once he has been deified.
1:429
因為愛,聖使徒說——或更確切地說,是那藉他說出這些話的基督說——愛是恆久忍耐,又有恩慈,愛是不嫉妒,不自誇,不張狂,不做失禮之事,不求自己的益處,不輕易被激怒,不計算人的惡,不因不義而歡喜,卻與真理一同歡喜;
For love, says the divine Apostle — or rather, Christ, who spoke these things through him — is patient, is kind, does not envy, does not boast, is not puffed up, does not behave unseemly, does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not reckon evil, does not rejoice at unrighteousness, but rejoices together with the truth;
1:430
愛永不隕落,因它以那獨一不失落、不改變的神為己有;
Love never falls, since it has as its own God, the only one unfailing and unchangeable;
1:431
and it makes the man who lives according to it to be such a one, so that, having accepted you also, he may say through Jeremiah the prophet:
1:432
I say to you, this is the way of my commandments, and the law that exists forever.
1:433
凡持守它的人——願我們達至生命;
All who hold fast to it — let us come to life;
1:434
but those who forsake it will die.
1:435
我的僕人哪,你當持守它,向著其光輝、在其光明面前前行;
Take hold of it, my servant, and journey toward the radiance, in the presence of its light;
1:436
不可將你的榮耀給予別人,也不可將於你有益的事給予外邦異族;
Do not give your glory to another, nor what is profitable to you to a foreign nation;
1:437
你是有福的,因為神所喜悅的事你都知道,你也學會了何處有智慮、何處有能力、何處有長壽與生命;
Blessed are you, because the things pleasing to God are known to you, and you have learned where prudence is, where strength is, where length of days and life are;
1:438
何處有眼目的光明與平安;你已踏上這道路,而我從遠方向你顯現;
where the light of the eyes and peace are; and you have set foot upon the way, and I appeared to you from afar;
1:439
你必與歡樂的會眾一同出來,因為你已站立在這些道路之上;
and you shall go forth with an assembly of those who rejoice, because you have stood upon the ways;
