1:2008
For who could have persuaded the many to choose the better course, when those set over them — both emperors and high priests — were so disposed, decreeing impiety in place of other decrees and laws, compelling all to submit, cutting the seamless tunic of the Church into many parts, and giving cause for rejoicing to those who scrutinize and slander our affairs?
1:2009
然而不消多久,塞爾吉烏斯這位謬論的播種者、多頭的九頭蛇,便走完了在世的一生,將審判的全部苦渣都為自己儲存在那個世界裡了;
But not much time intervened before Sergius, the sower of false doctrine, the many-headed hydra, passed through this present life, having stored up for himself entirely the dregs of judgment for that place;
1:2010
and Heraclius establishes Pyrrhus on that man's throne, he too being of the opposite party and opinion, and professing the same things as the departed one.
1:2011
不久之後,希拉克略本人也結束了他的一生,其子君士坦丁便繼承了帝國的權杖;
And when Heraclius himself also, shortly after, ended his life, Constantine his son was established over the scepters;
1:2012
皮洛斯本著他那扭曲的手段,夥同那個邪惡且最善於作惡的女人瑪爾提娜,以毒藥除掉了君士坦丁,出人意料地將她的兒子——人稱赫拉克洛納斯的——扶上了王位;
whom Pyrrhus, in accordance with the crookedness of his ways, together with that Martina, a base woman most well-suited for doing evil, removed by poison, and, contrary to expectation, transferred the kingship to her son, called by the name Heraclonas;
1:2013
fine deeds indeed for a high priest to do, and worthy of his gentleness!
1:2014
然而元老院深感厭惡,迅速將赫拉克洛納斯逐出政權,同時也將不敬虔的皮洛斯連同性情相仿的瑪爾提娜一併逐出了京城;
But the Senate, disgusted, quickly removed Heraclonas from power, at the same time also driving out the impious Pyrrhus, together with the like-minded Martina, from the imperial city;
1:2015
and so for the time being that "noble fellow" paid this penalty, thrust out from both throne and city, in return for having contrived that unjust murder.
1:2016
隨後即位為帝的是康斯坦斯,也就是被害的君士坦丁之子;
Then Constans reigns, the son of the murdered Constantine;
1:2017
this man having also appointed Paul as bishop of Byzantium, who likewise — he too — fostered that irrational and monothelite doctrine.
1:2018
But we must return again to the affairs of the divine Maximus, whom our discourse set forth as its subject, even though the narrative turned to other matters, which at the beginning it had also promised to mention as necessary.
1:2019
這位聖潔之人選擇前往羅馬,正是因為當時在君士坦丁堡蔓延的謬論——如我在上文已說明過的——他途中首先與非洲的主教們相會;
When, then, this holy man chose to journey to Rome on account of the false doctrine that had spread in Constantinople, as has already been shown by me above, he first, in passing, met with the bishops in Africa;
1:2020
he established them in the faith, and taught and instructed them thoroughly how they might evade the pretexts of their opponents, and elude the sophistical snares of those men.
1:2021
For the man of good understanding knew that we have need of much experience and skill in disputation, if indeed we are to strike down those arrayed against us, and cast down every high thing of theirs that is raised up against the true knowledge.
1:2022
他操練他們,以言語激勵他們奮勇,使他們充滿更為高貴剛毅的志氣;
He trained them, anointed them with words unto courage, and filled them with a more noble spirit;
1:2023
因為這些主教即便在教階上高過馬克西姆,但在智慧與見識上,卻是遜色而有所不及的;
for even if they surpassed him in throne/rank, yet in wisdom and understanding they were lesser and deficient;
1:2024
not to mention his other virtue, and the man's renown in all things.
1:2025
因此,他們無不順服於他的言語,並毫無異議地聽從他其他的勸勉與忠告,因為這些話語帶來極大的益處。他們在這人身上看見的,是一種超凡出眾、遠離塵俗的生活,以及豐沛充盈的言辭,不是點滴細流,而是如江河奔騰;
Hence they too were submitting to his words, and were being persuaded without contradiction by his other exhortations and counsels, which brought so great a benefit. For they saw in the man a life set apart and extraordinary, and speech abundant and copious, flowing not in mere drops, but in rivers;
1:2026
and understanding, and the rest of his disposition of soul, comparable to no one at all.
1:2027
他們對這位有福之人所感受到的,正如人們所說鐵屑對那磁石的感受一般;
having experienced toward the blessed man the same thing which, they say, iron filings experience toward that lodestone;
1:2028
or indeed that which those held fast by the songs of the fabled Sirens experience toward them.
1:2029
這些〔非洲主教〕後來得知,羅馬主教當時召集了一次主教會議,準備與他們一同將那荒謬悖理的教義處以詛咒與絕罰,於是在神聖馬克西姆的勸勉與建議下,他們自己也被引導著做了同樣的事;
When these [African bishops] learned at that time that the bishop of Rome had gathered a synod of bishops, so that together with them he might subject that outlandish doctrine to curses and anathema, they too, at the exhortation and suggestion of the divine Maximus, were led to do this same thing;
1:2030
not only Africa and its surrounding region, but also whatever bishops there were in the other islands there, having been drawn into the work, and having accomplished this good deed with zeal.
1:2031
For indeed all these had that man as both teacher and instructor, and as accomplice in what was done.
1:2032
此後未過多久,羅馬主教約翰便安息主懷;
Not much time passed thereafter, and John, the bishop of Rome, departed to the Lord;
1:2033
狄奧多爾(Theodore)繼承其座,不僅承其職位,亦承其正統信仰;
Theodore ascends to his throne, a successor no less of orthodoxy than of the see itself;
1:2034
與此同時,皮洛斯(Pyrrhus)亦被逐出帝都,來到阿非利加(Africa),與神聖的馬克西姆會面,提出自己的論點,又聽取對方的論點;
Meanwhile Pyrrhus too, having been driven out of the imperial city, arrived in Africa, and met with the divine Maximus, putting forward his own arguments to him and receiving those of the other in return;
1:2035
As both of them proceeded through questions and objections, how could I, in the present work, worthily set forth either the saint's solution—together with its plausibility and truth—in each problem, or Pyrrhus's defeat and assent to each point that was made?
1:2036
其一(皮洛斯)提出一項他認為無可辯駁、難以推翻的論點:對唯一的基督而言,意志也是唯一的,並宣稱對真理的把握不能是別的樣子;
For the one [Pyrrhus] put forward, as an unassailable and irrefutable argument, that the will too is one for the one Christ, and said that the true apprehension of the matter could not be otherwise;
1:2037
而另一位(馬克西姆)則答稱:此一位確實依位格而言是一位;
but the other [Maximus] replied that he is indeed one according to hypostasis;
1:2038
yet he distinguished the duality of the natures, along with which the wills too were correspondingly distinguished, and this he demonstrated most forcefully and irrefutably.
1:2039
而其一(皮洛斯)又將「意欲者」與「意志」相提並論,以荒謬連結荒謬;
And the one [Pyrrhus], in turn, linked the willers together with the wills, joining absurdity to absurdity;
1:2040
but the holy one turned this aside as utterly absurd by showing the logical consequence, and refuted it,
1:2041
他說:「若承認『意欲者』隨『意志』一併被引入(在此我要引用那有福之舌的原話),那麼依合理的換位推論,『意志』也必隨『意欲者』一併被引入;
"For if it be granted," he says, "that the willers are introduced together with the wills (for I shall use the very words of that blessed tongue), then assuredly, by reasonable conversion, the wills too will be introduced together with the willers;
1:2042
如此一來,依你們之見便會得出:因超本質、至善、至上主宰的神性只有一個意志,故也只有一個位格,如同薩伯流(Sabellius)之說;
and it will be found, according to your view, that on account of the one will of the supra-essential, supremely good, and most sovereign Godhead, there is also one hypostasis, after the manner of Sabellius;
1:2043
又因有三個位,故也有三個意志;
and on account of the three persons, there are also three wills;
1:2044
並因此而有三個本性,如同阿里烏(Arius)之說;
and on account of this, three natures, after the manner of Arius;
1:2045
if indeed, according to the definitions and canons of the Fathers, difference of wills likewise introduces difference of natures." [16]
1:2046
And why should I recount each and every one of the things said at that time?
1:2047
even were I to devote an entire treatise to the matter, I could scarcely manage to go through them all to the end,
1:2048
so lengthy, varied, and elaborately reasoned is the exposition of these matters.
1:2049
然而,凡讀過聖徒竭力撰寫的那部論著之人,皆可由此更精確地認識到:聖徒在每一事上,皆以睿智與最切時的推理進行詰問與答辯;而皮洛斯的種種論點則前後不連貫、自相矛盾,或者更確切地說,可謂毫無邏輯、愚昧無知;
It is possible, then, for those who go through that very treatise composed with such labor by the saint, to learn from it more precisely both the saint's questioning and answering in every matter—conducted with understanding and most apt reasonings—and Pyrrhus's incoherence and self-contradiction in his propositions, or rather, one might say, his lack of logic and his foolishness;
1:2050
他徹底理屈詞窮,如俗語所說「舌上壓牛」(緘口不言),自認己方論點軟弱無力;
who, having been utterly defeated, "puts an ox upon his tongue," as the saying goes, and condemns the weakness of his own argument;
1:2051
which argument, although he shaped it into many and varied forms and twisted it every way, he nevertheless found nothing therein that came together to his advantage.
1:2052
於是他也為自己所行懇求寬恕,當即以書面形式棄絕自己的一志論教義,並向羅馬主教遞交悔過書;
Accordingly he also begged forgiveness for what he had done, forthwith renouncing in writing his own monothelite doctrine, and giving as well to the bishop of Rome his written statements [of recantation];
1:2053
and by him he was received, one might say, most gladly.
1:2054
But the fool, exceedingly senseless, as though nothing new had befallen him, in Ravenna returned, like a dog, to his own vomit.
1:2055
When this came to the ears of the divine Maximus and to that aforementioned bishop, they, in a common assembly, pronounced a verdict against him as against a rotten and wholly incurable member, entirely cutting off the wretched man and casting him away.
1:2056
然而,即便遭此對待,他仍不止息其無恥,亦不減其日益增長的傲慢;
But he, even having suffered this, did not even then cease from shamelessness, nor from growing yet more arrogant;
1:2057
but with even more self-willed impulse, he leapt again upon the throne of Constantinople, and received the high priesthood a second time, as the prize of impiety.
1:2058
And since he was not unaware of who was the cause of his condemnation—for how could he be, when that man shone so brightly before all and blazed forth his teaching in the open?—he gave orders with haste that the holy one be brought to the palace,
1:2059
thinking that if he should get the better of this man, he would also prevail over all the others.
1:2060
與他一同的還有其門徒亞納大削(Anastasius),以及另一位同名、性情相似之人,此人被稱為羅馬教會的教廷代表(apocrisiarius);
Together with him also came his disciple Anastasius, along with another of the same name and like disposition, who was also called the apocrisiarius of the Church of Rome;
1:2061
此外,他也迅速將至聖的馬爾定(Martin)連同多位西方主教一併帶到,押解至拜占庭;
moreover he also swiftly brought the most divine Martin, together with several bishops of the West, and set them before him in Byzantium;
1:2062
being embittered against these, as was to be expected, on account of the opposition of their conviction.
1:2063
But as for the matters concerning the hierarch Martin, and however much outrage the impious man committed against him, drenching him with countless insults and abuses—O unholy hands!—
1:2064
punishing the innocent man, and finally condemning him to a most distant exile (Cherson was the place of his exile), and doing the same, evidently, to his bishops as well.
1:2065
然而,由於我急於進入神聖馬克西姆的事蹟,此刻並無餘暇將這些事逐一詳述其始末;
But I have no leisure for the present to recount these things just as they happened, hastening as I am toward the affairs of the divine Maximus;
1:2066
或許有許多人日後將會述說這些事,而另一些人,我想,早已述說過了,他們藉此尊崇此人,並讚揚其操行;
many, perhaps, will yet tell of those things, and others, I think, have already told them, honoring the man and extolling his manner of life;
1:2067
but for us, as our present purpose requires, let the matter proper to our design go forward.
1:2068
As, then, this sacred man was now seized in the hands of murderers, and all eyes were turned upon him,
1:2069
let us see with what manner of reception they first greeted him, and with what kind of judgment these fine lawgivers conducted his case.
1:2070
因為他乘船抵達拜占庭甫一靠岸,皇帝所派遣之人便前來見他,這些人單從面容便可見其內心充滿苦毒;
For as soon as he, having already been conveyed by ship, put in at Byzantium, there came to him those sent by the emperor, men who from their very look alone betrayed much bitterness in their souls;
1:2071
他們厚顏無恥地抓住這位聖徒——他當時赤足、也無外衣蔽體——強行將他拖上路帶走,其門徒亦隨行在側,見此情景不禁哀嘆連連;
who impudently seized the holy man, unshod and without any covering, and dragged him by force along the road and led him away, his disciple following as well and groaning at what was being done;
1:2072
and having led him away, they shut him up in a certain dark chamber, not even allowing him this much: the companionship of his disciple's dwelling with him.
1:2073
And for the time being, they entrusted his trial to the Sakellarios, a man who held the foremost rank in dignity,
1:2074
a man clever at fabricating speeches,
1:2075
and at committing wickedness under the guise of truth—in this, by no means the least skilled of all.
1:2076
What manner of wickedness did he leave undone?
1:2077
What manner of villainy had he not perpetrated?
1:2078
他既不敬重馬克西姆年高德劭的高齡(當時他年近八十,只差一點就滿八十),也不顧及其容貌所煥發的恩雅之氣,不顧其品格中的端莊有序,亦不顧其素來得體、極為莊重的儀態;
showing no respect for his venerable old age (for he was then about eighty years old, all but a little), nor for the grace that bloomed upon his face, nor for the decorum of his character, nor for his otherwise seemly and most dignified bearing;
1:2079
儘管面對這一切,這位最不義之人卻找不出任何正當或合理的理由來控告馬克西姆所行之事,只是——可以說——顯露出自己的乖戾,以及其性情中的無恥與極度卑劣;
and though he had all this before him, this most unjust man had nothing just or reasonable to charge him with for what he had done, but displayed, so to speak, only his own perversity, and the impudence and utter depravity of his own character;
1:2080
此人縱使被人目睹如此肆無忌憚,終究也只是徒然攪擾一切,徒勞無功;
who, even though he was seen behaving with such shamelessness, was nonetheless shown to be stirring up everything in vain;
1:2081
proven to be nothing but malicious, and most notorious for his villainy.
1:2082
至於當時所言所行之種種細節,以及那些自以為能藏身於謊言之下的人,如何對這無辜之人羅織讒言誣陷,聖徒那位優秀的門徒本人已在自己的紀錄中逐一詳述;
But indeed, the good disciple of the holy man himself relates in detail the particulars of what was said and done at that time, and what manner of slanders those who thought to shelter themselves behind falsehood attached to the guiltless man, having set it forth in his own memoir;
1:2083
from which anyone who wishes may examine everything word for word, and learn it more precisely.
1:2084
然而,依本篇之旨,我們亦不妨從中摘述若干,並將之納入本文,以免對此類事情全然未加提及;
Nevertheless, it is not beside our purpose for us too to relate a few things from that account, and to insert them into the present discourse, so that we should not be found altogether without mention of any such matters;
1:2085
and being about to do this, I intend to go through the events not by way of full narration, but, as one might say, summarily and in passing.
1:2086
So when that ill-famed Sakellarios had brought the saint before him, he immediately began to intimidate him beforehand with rather harsh words and threats,
1:2087
calling him unjust and a traitor and an enemy to the emperors, and the most shameful of all men. And when Maximus asked for what reason he was saying these things against him, and what treason he had committed,
1:2088
then that man fabricated slanders—of a kind only he was likely to fabricate—producing witnesses even for what was an admitted falsehood.
1:2089
他果然對這聖徒信口誣衊,聲稱馬克西姆曾將亞歷山卓(Alexandria)、埃及(Egypt)、五城區(Pentapolis)等大城,自我方疆界中割裂而出,拱手獻給了撒拉森人(Saracens);
And indeed he prattled slanderously against the holy man, saying that he had handed over great cities—Alexandria, I mean, and Egypt, and the Pentapolis—tearing them away, as he said, from our own borders, and already attaching them to those of the Saracens;
1:2090
and he called him their most well-disposed friend, and most intimate with them.
1:2091
But when the saint repelled this malicious scheme of his with an irrefutable argument, showing it to be plain slander and nothing else (for what had he to do with the capture of those cities, for which he rather wished what was advantageous?)—
1:2092
那無恥之人便轉而編造另一項指控,虛構所謂的夢兆、幻影與虛妄之象;
the shameless man turned to another accusation, fabricating certain dreams and shadows and phantasms;
1:2093
其中包括種種或大或小的回聲,以及對帝王的稱號,並指稱有一更為清晰的聲音迴響而出,所指向的乃是西方之主,而非東方之主;
among which were echoes of voices both greater and lesser, and imperial titles, and [an accusation] that a clearer voice resounded, addressed rather to the ruler of the West than to the ruler of the East;
1:2094
here too producing and putting forward accusers and false witnesses.
1:2095
聞此,聖徒愈發嘆息,說道:「我感謝我的神,因我已被交在你們手中,並遭受這樣的控告;
At this the holy man groaned all the more, and said, "I give thanks to my God that I have been delivered into your hands, and am assailed with such accusations;
1:2096
so that through these unmerited charges, the sins I have voluntarily incurred might be wiped away, and I might cleanse myself of the stains of my life."
1:2097
然而,容我就此稍作辯白:我既非解夢者,亦非精通夢兆之人;
Yet, that I may briefly answer these charges as well: I am neither a dream-interpreter, nor one versed in the knowledge of dreams;
1:2098
for indeed I have no leisure to fill my mind with fantasies of such things."
1:2099
"But since you have chosen to accuse me in such a manner as even to produce witnesses—
1:2100
and these not the ones who themselves had knowledge, but those who had heard it from others who knew—since those [original witnesses], as you say, have departed this life—
1:2101
Why did you not, from the beginning, while the first accusers were still alive, demand a reckoning concerning the dreams?
1:2102
For thus you yourselves would have been rid of the whole business, and I too would have obtained a verdict on matters that were mutually acknowledged.
1:2103
But, as it seems, the truth does not stand thus, nor did those who accused us set before their eyes him who searches the heart.
1:2104
May I be reckoned no Christian — for I have no worse curse to invoke upon myself — if I either saw the fabricated dream, or devised it, or recounted it to others, as though rejoicing in the affair as in an unlooked-for windfall.
1:2105
Then, when they saw the second charge refuted, they brought against him also a third accusation:
1:2106
which I did not think it even necessary to include in this account, since, besides being implausible, it is both childish and laughable.
1:2107
But since these fine judges did not refrain even from a fourth round of accusations and falsehoods, they brought forward a certain Gregory, alleging that the saint's disciple had said, in Rome, that it was neither pious nor reasonable for the emperor to be called a priest —
1:2108
as though he had learned this from his teacher.
1:2109
But the holy man was not at a loss for a defense even against this; he confronted Gregory face to face, and showed that what had been discussed on that occasion was one thing, and what was now being alleged was quite another.
1:2110
“And,” he says, “when that man arrived in Rome, the discussion concerned union, and our accepting the Typos, by which the notorious doctrine was formulated and put in writing.”
1:2111
“To this indeed our words and our reply were given, as we set forth to them what would be to their own advantage, and what we deemed profitable.”
1:2112
“To him I never at any time communicated any such thing, with God as my witness.”
1:2113
“Only this do I know myself to have said — not to the disciple, but to Gregory himself, surely —”
1:2114
“(which he himself could hardly deny outright, unless he should also entirely deny himself): that to define and to inquire concerning doctrines belongs to priests rather than to emperors.”
1:2115
“since to priests alone it is granted to anoint, and to lay on hands, and to offer the bread, and to stand at the altar, and to perform whatever other acts are more divine and more mystical.”
1:2116
“These things I spoke then, and I speak them now.”
1:2117
“On these grounds let whoever wishes either acquit or condemn;”
1:2118
“for a man could not be wronged by other men, even should he suffer the most terrible of all things.”
1:2119
接著,那些把希望寄託於謊言之上的人,既已無計可施,便將這位義人帶出法庭,而帶進了他的門徒阿納斯塔修斯;
Then, having nothing further to do, those who had placed their hope in falsehood led the just man out of the tribunal, and brought in his disciple Anastasius;
1:2120
他們用言語與威嚇恐嚇他,強迫他指證自己的師父;
whom they terrified with words and threats, compelling him to testify against his teacher;
1:2121
強逼他說,馬克西姆曾在與皮洛斯交談之時使他憂傷;
forcing him to say that he [Maximus] had grieved Pyrrhus, when he had once had a conversation with him;
1:2122
I do not know for what reason these liars fabricated such a thing.
1:2123
But when Anastasius said the very opposite of what they had expected — that he would by no means have grieved him at all, but would have honored him with every honor, and would have received him most affectionately as one thought to be well-disposed toward him — they battered him with fists and blows upon his head and cheeks, and having thus exacted this payment for the truth, they ordered him to be shut up again in prison.
1:2124
And again they bring the holy man before themselves, as though not satisfied with what had gone before, and they apply yet another trial to one who was innocent [of any wrongdoing].
1:2125
And it was this: that he was in agreement with the doctrines of Origen, and shared his opinion in everything.
1:2126
But when he had quickly dissolved this rotten and easily-refuted accusation, declaring openly that whoever holds Origen's views, and accepts his nonsensical doctrines, is separated from God and from the company of Christians —
1:2127
they inquired a second time concerning Pyrrhus and what had been said on that occasion, putting on a mask of kindness, whether knowingly or in earnest sincerity.
1:2128
Then next, [they asked] in what manner he had broken off communion with the patriarch.
1:2129
In addition to this, having also in the meantime posed other inquiries and questions, and having insisted that the Typos put forward by them ought to be honored — that very Typos which he so vehemently abhorred and dishonored —
1:2130
他們甚至也未曾克制對他的辱罵;
they did not even refrain from insults against him;
1:2131
finally, when they saw themselves defeated in every respect, and, as the saying goes, caught by their own feathers —
1:2132
having dissolved the council, they themselves went in haste to the emperor, reporting the man's steadfastness and his invincibility in argument, and that no one could persuade Maximus to agree with our position, even should someone attempt to punish him.
1:2133
此後不久,另有一些人前來見他——那時他已被囚禁;
A short time after this, others arrived to see him, who was by now held in confinement;
1:2134
thinking, perhaps, that by attacking him repeatedly, and by intimidating him with words, they would find him grown more yielding.
1:2135
而這些前來的人聲稱自己是奉宗主教之命而來;
And those who had arrived claimed to have been sent by the patriarch;
1:2136
and they, just as they had been instructed, put these questions to the saint:
1:2137
‘Of what Church are you, sir?’ they said — for I shall use their very words:
1:2138
‘Of Byzantium, of Rome, of Antioch, of Alexandria, of Jerusalem?’
1:2139
‘Behold, all of these, together with the provinces subject to them, have been united.’
1:2140
‘If, then, you too belong to the Catholic Church, be united; lest, by innovating a strange path for your life, you should suffer what you do not expect.’ To them the blessed man replied — fittingly, one might say, and as befits the wise:
1:2141
主既已言明大公教會即是那正確而得救的信仰宣認,也正因此稱讚彼得為有福,因他曾作出美好的宣認;
The Lord, having said that the Catholic Church is the right and saving confession of the faith, on this account also called Peter blessed, when he had made a good confession;
1:2142
upon which [confession] the God of all also declared that He would build such a Church.
1:2143
‘But I wish to learn the confession upon which this union of all the Churches has been founded;’
1:2144
‘and if this has been rightly done, neither do I hold myself estranged [from it].’
1:2145
To him the envoys said, ‘Even though we have no instruction concerning this, nevertheless we will tell you, since you leave absolutely no room for evasion.’
1:2146
‘Do you say that the two have become one on account of the union, or is there some other, apart from these two?’
1:2147
‘No,’ they said, ‘but the two have become one through the union.’
1:2148
‘We are rid of this business,’ he said, ‘having fabricated for ourselves a faith without hypostasis, and a God that does not exist.’
1:2149
‘For if we conflate the two into one on account of the union, and again divide the one into two on account of the difference, there will be neither a monad nor a dyad of energies;’
1:2150
‘since they perpetually cancel one another out, and render inoperative the one to whom they naturally belong, indeed altogether non-existent.’
1:2151
‘For that which does not have even a single motion from nature that is inalienable, and that is not altered or displaced by any manner of change, is deprived of all essence, according to the Fathers;’
1:2152
‘not having an energy that essentially characterizes it.’
1:2153
‘This, then, I am not able to say, nor was I taught by the holy Fathers to confess it;’
1:2154
‘do, therefore, as seems good to you, since you are the ones who hold authority.’
1:2155
然而他們對此無言以對,便將當權者所作的決定轉告於他;
But they, having nothing to say in reply to this, reported to him the decision made by those in power;
1:2156
declaring that, since he would not be persuaded, he would be subjected to anathema, and that the death sentence determined against him would also be carried out.
1:2157
然而他卻如此溫和謙卑地說道:「願上帝為我所定下的,如今得以成就,將那早在萬世之先便已知曉的榮耀歸給祂。」但這宣判的刑罰暫時被延緩了;
But he, so gently and humbly, said: ‘Let that which has been determined by God concerning me now come to its fulfillment, bringing Him glory that was known before every age.’ But for the time being, the sentence pronounced was postponed;
1:2158
皇帝與宗主教一同商議,其所為與彼拉多和猶太人加諸於我的耶穌身上者毫無二致,判處這位義人流放;
And having taken counsel together, the emperor and the patriarch alike — no less than Pilate and the Jews did against my Jesus — condemned the just man to exile;
1:2159
he being swiftly led away to a certain small town called Bizya —
1:2160
having done, that is, the very same things also to his namesake — I mean the apocrisiarius of Rome.
1:2161
果然,過了許多天之後,他們差遣了那位凱撒利亞主教狄奧多西,以及保羅與另一位狄奧多西前去見這流放中的他,後二人皆身披執政官的尊位;
And indeed, when many days had passed, they sent to him in exile that Theodosius, the bishop of Caesarea, and Paul, and another Theodosius, both of the latter clothed with the rank of consul;
1:2162
這些人也親自向這位有福之人提出了許多形形色色的論辯;
who themselves also put forward to the blessed man many and various arguments;
1:2163
時而奉承他,時而威嚇他;
now flattering him, now threatening him;
1:2164
and now also questioning him closely so as to find out [his views].
1:2165
The detailed, part-by-part account of these matters is set forth in the record composed by the good Anastasius, as I have also stated above.
1:2166
But it will perhaps not be untimely for us also to relate a few things drawn from these, giving here too our account in summary form.
1:2167
For thus we might all the more clearly learn the man's invincibility in every respect: that, though there were many who assailed him and attempted in manifold ways to shake him, he himself none the less remained unbending, wholly firm, and unchangeable in resolve.
1:2168
But let us see what sort of things these men just mentioned brought before the saint.
1:2169
他們首先仔細探問他的近況如何;
First they inquired closely how matters stood with him;
1:2170
putting this question to him as though in friendship — or rather, one should say, in flattery.
1:2171
As the end of my life has been foreknown and predetermined by God's providential [wisdom], so indeed may it be for me.
1:2172
(Again they question him in turn:
1:2173
'What does foreknowing mean, and what does being predetermined signify, and what is the difference between the two?' And when he answered, [he said] that foreknowing pertains to the things within our power—I mean thoughts, words, and deeds—
1:2174
德行與惡行正是由此臨到我們身上;
from which virtues and vices come upon us;
1:2175
whereas being predetermined pertains to things not in our power, but which befall us from without, involuntarily—
1:2176
namely, all manner of afflictions, and other chastising means.
1:2177
And simply put, this most God-inspired man having gone through each of these in detail—
1:2178
and having explained which afflictions come on account of the expiation of sins,
1:2179
and which are brought upon us for testing, or for [divine] dispensation, justly and, as one could not otherwise say, beneficially—
1:2180
they, for their part, having for the moment set these matters aside, turned their discourse back to the things concerning which they had come,
1:2181
calling him to communion, and to assent to what they had done.
1:2182
But as he set in opposition to this the innovation that had come upon the Church, and the confusion of the faith [that had resulted],
1:2183
then Theodosius of Caesarea also engaged him in dialogue, and asserted most insistently that nothing contrary to right reason, nor anything foreign or alien to it, was professed by these men—
1:2184
upholding [the doctrine of] the [one] energy and that monothelite will, and contending fiercely on its behalf.
1:2185
但這位聖者駁斥了這種教說中的荒謬之處,說道:若如其所言,將「一個運作」定為同時可用來論及神性與人性,那麼神學的道理與救贖經綸的道理必然全然混亂;
But the holy man, having refuted the absurdity involved in such [teaching], said that if one energy, as he put it, were posited to be spoken of both divinity and humanity, then assuredly both the doctrine of theology and that of the economy would be thrown into confusion;
1:2186
and the absurd result would be that there would be a Tetrad instead of a Triad, since the flesh would thereby become of the same nature as the Word—
1:2187
if indeed, according to the Fathers, 'those things whose essence is one, their energy also will be one.' But moreover, the distinguishing and constitutive [properties] of both the divinity and the humanity would be removed, or else each would proceed to complete non-existence,
1:2188
since, according to these arguments of yours and this new dogma-making, it would be possible neither to conceive nor to speak of the energies or the wills as either one or two—
1:2189
he further added that this could not be agreed to, and that such [teaching] belongs to false teachers and deceivers, whom one must not obey, but must rather turn away from, so far as possible, and separate oneself from them, lest we too should seem to derive some evil benefit from association with them. These men, as if struck speechless at what had been said, remained silent for a considerable while, bowing their heads down.
1:2190
But Theodosius, having again recovered himself, and having at leisure gathered together other inquiries, which he supposed would remain for him like certain impregnable citadels—
1:2191
having then put forward these statements, along with [a claim of] the acceptance of certain simple expressions,
1:2192
asserting that Maximus accepted these—
1:2193
and besides, having also raised other inquiries concerning hypostatic energy, and a certain natural and relational willing—matters which require a lengthier discourse, and are not suited to the present narrative account.
1:2194
Since, then, he [proposed] these things, but the holy man very easily managed to overturn every proposition in his arguments and reasonings—
1:2195
this man, finally worn out, and having nothing further to say in reply to the matters at hand, tried another way to draw the saint over [to his side]:
1:2196
conversing with him now in a friendlier manner, [saying] that he too would wish that the obstacles and stumbling-blocks between them be removed, and that the former peace be restored to the Church.
1:2197
'Which,' he said, 'could not come about otherwise, unless we now go to those in Rome, and summon them to terms of agreement and reconciliation—'
1:2198
that is, breathing and being of one mind together with them.
1:2199
At this the holy man became all the more cheerful—how could one describe how he was disposed toward what had been said!
1:2200
And with what gracious words did he not respond to the one who had spoken it!
1:2201
For he, though in so poor a bodily condition, worn out both by ascetic labor and by old age, was nevertheless eager to visit Rome once again, and together with them to accomplish what would be profitable.
1:2202
'Only let this become deed,' he said, 'and let it not be a word spoken in vain.' 31.
1:2203
And when Theodosius had confirmed what had been said even with an oath, and had touched the immaculate Gospels with his hands—although this senseless man kept none of these [promises], being dragged along, as it were, by the wills of those in power—
1:2204
the holy man was all the more cheerful, bracing his whole self for the journey, and considering what would be beneficial both to them and to those in Rome.
1:2205
Then, when Theodosius was about to depart from there, in order to communicate concerning these matters with those in the imperial city, having once again greeted the holy man with an embrace—
1:2206
and having also given him a tunic and a gray cloak, he thus entered Byzantium, together with the two consuls who accompanied him.
1:2207
Eight days passed from that time, and Paul, who had himself also been honored with the rank of consul, went out to the saint—
1:2208
having been commanded by the emperor to take up the holy man from Bizya with reverence and respect, as being a friend and acquaintance, and one belonging to his own forebears, and to transfer him to one of the monasteries at Rhegium, the one named after St. Theodore.
1:2209
And on the following day Epiphanius and Troilus, both bearing the rank of patrician, went to him, together also with Theodosius of Caesarea—
1:2210
and the saint continued to expect that this man would make good on what had been said, not having detected his treachery, for he himself was utterly guileless in mind.
1:2211
These men, having conversed at great length with the holy man, announced the emperor's promises—that he would make him his own father and show him to be superior to all, only if he would consent to be united and come together with him, and jointly with them choose what had been decreed.
1:2212
Having said to him what seemed to favor their cause, and putting it forward, they repeatedly brought up in everything they said that unformed Typos, again and again—
