1:136
but for the better, which is abiding and not easily shaken, for whose sake also the forging of the bonds and this sacred knot was rather effected.
1:137
所以按那神聖的話語,並非大衛的心被結連於約拿單的心;
Therefore, by the divine word, it was not the soul of David that was knit to the soul of Jonathan;
1:138
but on the contrary, the soul of the inferior, undergoing this, is said to be knit to the soul of David.
1:139
因為那較優者既自足,斷不會揀選去結連於自己的較劣者;乃是那較劣者,因需要從較優者而來的幫助,理當被結連、依附於那較優者;
For the better, being self-sufficient, would not choose to be knit to its own inferior; but the inferior, needing the help that comes from the better, ought, being knit, to be attached to the better;
1:140
so that the one, abiding in itself, may enjoy no harm from communion with the inferior, while the other, disordered, being bound out of itself and fitted to the better, harmed in nothing, may by the constraints of the bonds be won over to the better.
1:141
因此,鍛成這羈絆是那較優者、而非那較劣者的事;
Wherefore it belonged to the superior, and not to the lesser, to forge the bonds;
1:142
but to be bound belonged to the inferior, so that he has not even any power somehow to be loosed from the bonds.
1:143
By certain such constraints this David has bound us fast, both now and from that time, so that we cannot be loosed from his bonds, not even if we should wish.
1:144
Nor then, even if we should go abroad, will he release our souls, holding them thus knit fast according to the divine writing.
1:145
他既如此從一開始就擒住我們,又用各樣方法環繞包圍我們,到他大半已成、看似我們要留下時,便接著像一位好農夫對待一塊荒地——這地或是全然不肥沃,反倒鹹苦、焦乾、多石、鬆散,或是並非全然不毛、也非無天賦,倒是極肥沃,卻仍未開墾、被荒置,長滿荊棘與野叢、難以耕作;
But thus, having taken us from the beginning and gone about us by every means, when the greater part had been accomplished for him and it seemed we should stay, thereupon, like some good farmer dealing with a piece of fallow land—either land in no way good, but salty and scorched, rocky and crumbly, or land not wholly barren nor unfruitful, but indeed very fertile, yet still untilled and neglected, hardened with thorns and wild thickets and difficult to work;
1:146
又像一位種植者對待一棵樹——這樹或是野生、結不出嘉果、卻並非全然無用,若有精於栽植之術的人帶來嘉良的枝條,從中剖開、然後接合捆縛,直到二者長合、如一棵樹般受養(這樣你便會看見一棵混雜的樹,雖屬雜種,卻由不結果的變為多結果,在野根上結出佳美橄欖的果子);
or like some planter dealing with a plant—either wild and bearing no cultivated fruit, yet not wholly useless, if one skilled in the planter's art should bring a cultivated shoot and graft it in, splitting it in the middle, then joining and binding them, until both, having coalesced, are nourished as one (for thus you would see a kind of mingled tree, bastard indeed, yet fruitful out of the unfruitful, bearing the fruit of the good olive upon wild roots);
1:147
或是野生、卻於熟練的種植者並非無用;或甚至是嘉種、卻別樣地結果不佳,或又因缺乏技藝而未修剪、未澆灌、乾枯,被那許多隨意叢生的多餘枝條窒礙,以致彼此妨礙,無法在生長中達到完滿、結出果子;
or wild indeed, yet not useless to a skilled planter; or even cultivated, yet bearing fruit poorly, or again through lack of skill unpruned, unwatered and parched, choked by the many superfluous shoots growing at random, and hindered from reaching perfection in its growth and bearing fruit by one another;
1:148
他既把我們看作這樣,便以他自己農耕的技藝環繞我們,不僅察看眾人所見、表面可見的,更挖掘並試驗那最深處的——又問、又提、又聽我們的回答——當他看出我們裏面有甚麼並非無用、無益、無望的,便鬆土、翻掘、澆灌、樣樣施為,使出他一切的技藝與照料,把我們陶造成形;
taking us as such, and going round us with his own husbandman's art, and observing not only the things seen by all and visible on the surface, but digging up and testing also the inmost things—asking, propounding, and listening to our answers—when he perceived something in us not useless, unprofitable or hopeless, he dug, turned over, watered, set everything in motion, applied all his art and care, and worked us into shape;
1:149
凡荊棘、蒺藜與一切野生草木——就是我們那因失序、放縱而被搖動的靈魂所瘋長、抽發出來的——他都藉著駁斥與攔阻,盡都砍除剷去;
the thorns and thistles and all the kind of wild weeds or plants—all that our soul, shaken up, sent up and yielded in rank profusion, being as it were disordered and headstrong—he cut out and removed entirely by his refutations and by his restraining;
1:150
他擒住我們,有時極具蘇格拉底之風地用論辯絆倒我們,每逢他見我們像某些野馬般全然桀驁不馴,躍出正道、四處亂奔時,便用某種勸服與約束,如同用嚼環——就是出自我們自己口中的論點——使我們在他面前安靜下來;
laying hold of us, and at times very Socratically tripping us up by argument, if anywhere he saw us altogether refractory like some wild horses, bounding off the road and running about hither and thither at random, until by a certain persuasion and constraint, as by a bridle—the argument from our own mouth—he brought us to quietness before him;
1:151
applying his arguments to us at first with difficulty and not without pain, as to people unaccustomed and not yet practised in following argument, yet purging us out nonetheless.
1:152
及至他藉這些方法使我們合宜、預備妥當,能領受真理的話語,那時他便如向耕得熟透、鬆軟、預備好使所撒之種發芽的土壤一般,毫不吝惜地撒下;
And when by these means he had made us fit and well prepared for the reception of the words of truth, then indeed, as upon well-worked, soft soil ready to bring forth the seeds cast upon it, he sowed unsparingly;
1:153
他既使撒種合時,也使其餘一切照料合時,恰當地、用那些與道相宜之物,把每件事作妥;
making both the casting of the seeds timely, and all the rest of his care timely, working each thing fittingly and with the things proper to the discourse;
1:154
all that was dull and bastard in the soul—whether so by nature or thickened by the superfluous nourishments of the body—he sharpened and made lean by the subtle arguments and methods of rational disciplines, which, woven out of the simplest first principles into successions and variously turned, advance into a certain intricate and hard-to-unravel texture, rousing us as though sleeping, and teaching us ever to hold to the matters in hand, in no way slipping away either through their length or through their subtlety.
1:155
那不加審辨、輕率的習氣——就是對偶然出現的事,無論其為何種、即便恰是虛假的,也加以贊同;而對所說的某些真實之事,卻屢屢加以反駁——這毛病他也藉前述的、與別的各樣論辯,從我們身上訓練除去;
the uncritical and rash habit—of assenting to whatever chances to come, of whatever sort it may be, even if it happen to be false, and of contradicting often even when some true things have been said—this too he trained out of us, both by these aforesaid and by other manifold arguments;
1:156
因為哲學的這一部分是多方面的,教我們不可隨意或偶然地拋出、又收回我們的判斷,乃要精確地考查,不單看那表面的(因為有許多事物本身光鮮、貌似莊嚴,藉著得體的言辭如同真的衝進我們耳中,其實腐爛虛假,把我們攫住、從我們取得「真實」的裁決,過不多時便被察出是不牢靠、不足信的,徒然假冒真理;
for this part of philosophy is manifold, accustoming us not to cast forth and again to retract our testimonies at random or as it happens, but, examining accurately not the merely apparent things only (for many things glorious in themselves and of solemn appearance, having rushed into our ears under decorous voices as though true, being yet rotten and false, snatch us up and obtain from us a verdict of truth, and not long after are detected as unsound and untrustworthy, having vainly counterfeited the truth;
1:157
他便輕易地指出我們竟可笑地受了欺騙,又對那最不該的事隨意作了見證);
and easily showed us to have been ridiculously deceived, and to have testified at random to things to which we least ought);
1:158
and again, on the other hand, other things solemn indeed and not vaunting, or set forth in voices not trustworthy, seeming paradoxical and of all things most incredible, and forthwith rejected as false and unworthily insulted, were afterward, by those who tracked them out and considered them accurately, perceived to be of all things most true and simply unassailable—the very things hitherto deemed to be rejected and disreputable—not, then, to examine only the apparent and obtruding things, which are sometimes deceitful and sophistical, but to investigate the inner things, sounding out each, lest anything ring unsound, and first assuring ourselves in them, thus also to agree with those outside and to declare ourselves concerning each thing—this he taught us.
1:159
如此,我們靈魂中那關乎言辭與論辯的審辨能力,便受了理性的訓練;
Thus, then, was the critical part of our soul concerning expressions and arguments rationally trained;
1:160
並非照那些善辭修辭家的評斷,去看言語是合希臘規範或屬蠻夷;
not according to the judgements of fine rhetors, as to whether something is Hellenic or barbarous in speech;
1:161
那是渺小而不必要的學問;
that small and unnecessary study;
1:162
乃是這件事——它對希臘人與蠻夷、對智者與凡夫、簡言之(免得我逐一細數各樣技藝與生計而冗長)對一切擇定任何生活方式的人,都是最必要的;
but this thing most necessary of all to Greeks and barbarians alike, to wise and laymen, and in short (that my discourse may not be long by going through each art and pursuit) to all men who have chosen any kind of life whatsoever;
1:163
if indeed all who discuss anything in common are concerned and earnest not to be deceived.
1:164
而且這不單是辯證法獨自蒙分賜去校正的那一類;
And it is not this thing only—the form which dialectic alone has been allotted to set right;
1:165
他又把我們靈魂中那卑微的部分——我們本對宇宙的宏偉、奇妙作為、與那繁複而全智的工巧驚詫不已,無理性地驚奇、因驚駭而畏縮,全然不知如何推想,如同無理性的活物——藉別的學科、就是自然科學,把它喚醒扶正,闡明萬有中的每一樣,極其睿智地分辨到那最初的元素,然後以理性把它們交織起來,遍歷全體與各部分的本性,並宇宙中事物那多樣的轉變與更替;
but again the humble part of our soul—we who were astounded at the grandeur, the wonder-working, and the manifold and all-wise craftsmanship of the cosmos, and who marvelled irrationally and cowered down in amazement, knowing nothing how to reason at all, like irrational animals—he roused and set upright by other disciplines, the natural sciences, making clear each of the things that are, and discerning most wisely into the very first elements, and then interweaving them by reason and traversing both the nature of the whole and of each part, and the manifold mutation and change of the things in the cosmos;
1:166
until, leading us on by his clear teaching and arguments—both those he had learned and those he had himself discovered concerning the sacred economy of the whole and the blameless nature—he implanted in our souls a rational wonder in place of an irrational one.
1:167
This is the lofty and inspired learning which natural philosophy, most lovely to all, teaches.
1:168
至於那些神聖學問——人人喜愛、無可爭辯的幾何學,與那遨遊高天的天文學——又何須一一提說呢?這每一樣他都印在我們靈魂中,或教導、或喚起記憶——我不知該怎麼說——把幾何學單立為一切的穩固基座、不可動搖的牢靠根基;
What need to mention the things of the sacred sciences—geometry, dear to all and beyond dispute, and astronomy, that travels among the heights? Each of these he imprinted upon our souls, teaching or recalling them—or I know not what I ought to say—making geometry simply the unshaken base of all, and a sure foundation;
1:169
and leading us up even to the highest things through astronomy, as by a kind of ladder reaching to heaven, by each of the two studies making heaven accessible to us.
1:170
至於那在萬事中最為崇高、又是整個哲學族類尤其為之勞苦的——如同從多樣的耕作中,從其餘一切學問與長久的哲思中收取那美好的果子,就是那關乎品格的神聖美德,由此而生靈魂衝動那寧定堅穩的狀態;
But the things that are of all the most surpassing, and for the sake of which especially the whole philosophic race labours—as out of a varied husbandry, gathering from all the other studies and from long philosophizing the good fruits, namely the divine virtues that concern character, from which comes the untroubled and steadfast state of the soul's impulses;
1:171
and which were to render us truly godlike and blessed.
1:172
And these too he worked out by his own gentle and wise arguments, not least also most necessary ones, concerning our morals and manners.
1:173
他不單以言辭,更已以行為,藉著對靈魂諸衝動與情慾本身的觀察與省思,在某種程度上駕馭我們的衝動;因為唯有當這些被認清時,我們的靈魂才得以從紊亂中被矯正,從混亂的光景遷到一種經過審辨、井然有序的光景;
And not by arguments only, but already also by deeds, he in a way piloted our impulses, by the very contemplation and consideration of the impulses and passions of the soul, from which especially, when these are recognized, the soul of ours is by nature set right out of its disorder, and transferred from a confused state to one judged and well-ordered;
1:174
好叫它如在鏡中觀看自己,得見那諸惡的源頭與根——就是它裏面一切無理性的成分,那向我們興起、引發荒謬情慾的;
so that, beholding itself as in a mirror, it might see the very beginnings and roots of evils—all the irrational element in it, from which the absurd passions rise up against us;
1:175
又得見它那最佳的部分、就是那理性的部分何等可貴——在它的掌權之下,靈魂得以安存於自己,不受損傷、不被攪動;
and again, how great is the best part of it, the rational, under whose rule it remains in itself unharmed and unaffected;
1:176
然後,靈魂既在自己裏面精確地省察了這些,便可拋棄、除去一切從那較劣部分滋生的——就是那藉放縱把我們傾瀉出去、或藉卑下把我們收縮窒息的,如歡愉與情慾、或憂愁與懼怕,及凡隨這些種類而來的一連串惡——在它們方才萌發、剛剛抽芽時就起來抵擋,不容它們稍有增長,乃將它們毀滅、使之消亡;
then, having considered these accurately in itself, it might cast out and put away all the things growing from the worse part—which pour us out through licentiousness, or contract and stifle us through abjectness, such as pleasures and desires, or griefs and fears, and all the rank of evils that follows upon these kinds—rising up against them while they are yet beginning and only just sprouting, and not suffering them to grow even a little, but destroying and making them vanish;
1:177
but all that rises in us from the better part, being good, these it might nourish and preserve, fostering them from their beginning and guarding them together until perfection.
1:178
因為唯有如此,那神聖的美德才能臨到靈魂:就是審慎——它首先能判斷靈魂這些活動,並由此而生對我們身外之物(若有的話)善惡的認識;
For thus might the divine virtues at some time come to the soul: prudence, which is first able to judge these very movements of the soul, the knowledge of good and evil also concerning the things outside us, if there be any, arising from them;
1:179
並節制——就是那從起初便正當揀選這些事的能力;
and temperance, the power that rightly chooses these things from the beginning;
1:180
並公義——就是把當得的分給各人的;
and justice, which assigns to each what is fitting;
1:181
and the preservation of all these, courage.
1:182
因此,他並非單以口頭宣講的論說來使我們習慣,彷彿審慎不過是對善惡、或當行與不當行之事的知識而已;
Not, then, by arguments merely declared did he accustom us, as though prudence were the knowledge of good and evil, or of things to be done and not to be done;
1:183
this being that empty and unprofitable study, if the argument should be apart from the deeds, and prudence not doing the things to be done and turning away from those not to be done, but only furnishing the knowledge of these to those who possess it—such as we see many to be.
1:184
再者,論到節制是對當揀選與不當揀選之事的某種知識——其餘的哲學家並不甚教導它,尤其那些較晚近的,他們論辯雖然有力、強健(我也屢屢驚奇他們竟證明神與人的美德是同一的、地上的智者與那初始之神同等),卻仍無法傳授審慎使人也去行審慎之事,也無法傳授節制使人也去揀選他所學的;
And again, that temperance is a kind of knowledge of things to be chosen and not to be chosen—the other philosophers do not very much teach it, and especially the more recent ones, who, though vigorous and strong in their arguments (such as I have often admired, when they prove the virtue of God and of men to be the same, and the wise man on earth to be equal to the first God), are yet unable to hand down either prudence, so that one should also do the things of prudence, or temperance, so that one should also choose the very things he has learned;
1:185
and likewise also concerning justice, and further courage.
1:186
他卻不這樣以言辭向我們講解那些關乎美德的事,倒寧可催促我們去行;
Not thus did he expound to us the things concerning the virtues by arguments, but rather called us on to the deeds;
1:187
and he called us on more by his deeds than by what he said.
1:188
And I beg of the philosophers now living—as many as I myself have known and as many as I have heard others tell of—and of other men also, to bear without resentment what is now being said by us.
1:189
And let no one suppose that I say these things either out of friendship toward the man, or still out of hostility toward the rest of the philosophers
1:190
(論到他們,倘若有誰,我自己也願為他們的論辯之故而作他們的愛慕者,並願讚美他們,也願自己稱讚、又聽別人說他們最美的話;
(of whom, if anyone else, I myself too wish to be a lover for the sake of their arguments, and I wish to praise them, both myself and to hear others saying the finest things about them;
1:191
可實情卻是:哲學這名稱本身幾乎被眾人褻瀆到了極點,我幾乎寧願全然作個門外漢,也不願學這些人所宣講的甚麼——這些人因其餘的生活方式,我以為連靠近都不值得,或許我這樣想並不正確)——只願無人疑心我說這些話,是出於某種爭強好勝,無論是關乎當歸這人的讚美,或那另一種針對外邦哲學家的爭勝;
but indeed things are such that the very name of philosophy is outraged to the last degree by almost all, and I came near to choosing to remain wholly a layman, rather than to learn any of the things which these men declare—men whom, on account of the rest of their life, I thought it not even worth approaching, perhaps not rightly thinking so)—only let no one suspect that I say these things out of some ambition, whether of the praises owed to the man, or of that other ambition against the philosophers outside;
1:192
倒願人確信:我們所說的,反倒比他的事蹟還要小,免得顯出諂媚之態,並非為自己編造言辭、名目與巧設的頌讚之由;
but let one be persuaded that we, lest we should seem to flatter, say things even smaller than his deeds, not framing for ourselves words and names and artful occasions of encomium;
1:193
I was being taught to praise and to speak an encomium about something—anything that was not true, I willingly forbore.
1:194
因此,即便如今我立意要稱讚,我也不認為該單憑貶責別人來高舉這人;
Therefore not even now, having set myself to praise, do I think I ought simply to exalt this man by the censures of others;
1:195
不然,我便是說了這人的壞話了——把他蒙福的生活拿來與別人的過失相比,好叫我能說出甚麼關乎他更大的話;
or I should speak ill of the man, comparing his blessed life with the failings of others, in order that I might have something greater to say about him;
1:196
but I will confess the very thing I have experienced, apart from any comparison and craftiness of words.
1:197
This man first and alone urged me also to philosophize in the philosophy of the Greeks, persuading me by his own character to listen to and bear with the discourse concerning morals—I who would not have been persuaded, so far as concerned the other philosophers (again I confess), not rightly indeed, but unhappily for us, well-nigh so.
1:198
For I did not at first fall in with many, but only with a few of those who professed to teach, but who, all of them, made philosophizing stop at words.
1:199
唯有這人頭一個也以他的論辯催我去研習哲學,並先以行為作了那藉言辭發出的勸勉;
But this man first urged me to philosophize also by his arguments, having anticipated by his deeds the exhortation through words;
1:200
他並非單宣講雕琢過的辭句,乃是除非帶著真誠的心、那也肯竭力去行所言之事的心,否則連開口都不屑;又或他努力使自己成為他論辯中所描述、那將美好度日之人的樣式;我本想說,他是擺出了一位智者的典範;
not merely declaring studied phrases, but not even deigning to speak unless he should do so with a sincere mind, one that would also strive to do the things said, or trying to render himself such as the one who, by his arguments, he describes as the man who will live well; and setting forth, I would have said, a pattern of a wise man;
1:201
可是既然這篇言辭起初向我們應許的是真實、而非辭藻華美,我便還不稱他為智者的典範;
but since the discourse promised us at the outset truth, not elegance, I do not yet call him a pattern of a wise man;
1:202
although indeed I wish to say it is true.
1:203
因此並非一個確切的典範,乃是一位極切望被陶塑相似、若必須說、便是竭盡一切殷勤與熱忱、甚至超乎人力地勉力的人;
Not, then, an exact pattern, but one greatly wishing to be made like, forcing himself with all earnestness and eagerness, if I must say so, even beyond human power;
1:204
並且把我們也陶造成像他一樣的別樣的人——不是擅長論辯、通曉那些關乎衝動之事的人,乃是駕馭那衝動本身的人;
and moreover fashioning us also into others such as he—not masters of arguments and knowers of the things concerning the impulses, but of the impulses themselves;
1:205
他催促我們趨向行為、也趨向論辯,並在那觀照本身之中,把每一樣美德的不小份量——倘若我們有容量,或許是整全的份量——帶到我們身上;
pressing us on toward deeds and toward the arguments, and bringing to bear, in that very contemplation, no small portion of each virtue—perhaps even the whole, if we had had room for it;
1:206
若必須說,他乃是藉著靈魂那本分的活動——就是他勸我們委身於它的——強使我們行公義;
compelling us, if I must say so, to act justly by reason of the proper activity of the soul, to which he persuaded us to give ourselves;
1:207
leading us away from the busyness of life and the turmoil of the marketplace, and rousing us to look round upon ourselves and to do truly our own proper things.
1:208
至於說這就是行公義、這就是真正的公義——就是各盡本分——某些古代哲學家也曾這樣說,稱之為「行自己的事」,在我看來,這對他們自己與來就近他們的人,於得享福樂更為有效;
And that this is to act justly, and that this is the truly just—the doing of one's own proper work—certain of the ancient philosophers also have said, calling it the doing of one's own things, more effective, it seems to me, toward blessedness both for themselves and for those who come to them;
1:209
if indeed it belongs to this virtue to assign to each according to worth, and to each his own.
1:210
因為還有甚麼是靈魂自己之物,又有甚麼如此配得,能比照管自己——不向外觀看、不干涉別人的事、簡言之、不以那最壞的不義虧負自己,乃向內歸回自己、把自己交還自己、各盡本分——更甚的呢?這樣,若必須說,他便是藉強使我們行公義之事來教育我們;
For what else would be the soul's own thing, and what so worthy, as to take care of itself—not looking outward nor meddling with another's affairs, nor, to put it briefly, wronging itself with the worst injustice, but turned inward toward itself, rendering itself to itself and acting justly? Thus, then, by compelling us, if I must say so, to do just things, he educated us;
1:211
又同樣地,藉著歸向自己、立志並竭力認識自己,使我們有審慎;
and again, no less, to be prudent by being toward oneself and willing and trying to know oneself;
1:212
this being the best work of philosophy, which is also ascribed to the most oracular of the divinities as an all-wise injunction, namely: 'Know thyself.'
1:213
古人說得好:這實在是審慎的功課,這便是那神聖的審慎;
And that this is truly the work of prudence, and that this is the divine prudence, is well said by the ancients;
1:214
being truly the same virtue of God and of man, the soul practising to behold itself as in a mirror, and the divine Mind—if it should become worthy of this communion—being mirrored in itself, and tracking out a certain ineffable way of this deification.
1:215
因此也要有節制、要剛強作大丈夫;
And consequently also to be temperate and to play the man;
1:216
所謂節制,就是保守那認識自己之靈魂的審慎,倘若它曾臨到靈魂的話;
to be temperate, by preserving this prudence of the soul that knows itself, if ever this should come to it;
1:217
因為這又是節制——它乃是某種被保全的審慎;
for this again is temperance, being a kind of saved prudence;
1:218
所謂剛強作大丈夫,就是恆守一切前述的操練,不論甘心或迫於任何必然都不離棄,乃要持守、並作那所說之事的主人;
and to play the man, by abiding in all the aforesaid pursuits, and not falling away either willingly or by any necessity, but keeping them and being masters of the things mentioned;
1:219
and this is the virtue—being a kind of saviour and guardian of doctrines.
1:220
他確實還在努力使我們成為公義、審慎、節制或勇敢的人——因我們自己的遲緩怠惰,雖然他極其殷切;
And indeed he is still about to make us just, prudent, temperate or courageous—through our own slowness and sloth, and that though he was very earnest;
1:221
我們既不擁有、也尚未接近任何美德,無論屬人或屬神——差得遠呢;
we neither possessing nor yet having come near to any virtue whatsoever, human or divine—far from it;
1:222
因為這些是至大至高的,凡神不向他吹入能力的人,無一能掌握、無一能達到;
for these are the greatest and loftiest, and neither is to be grasped nor attained by anyone into whom God does not breathe the power;
1:223
我們既無這樣的天賦,也還不敢承認自己配得著它;
and we are neither so naturally fitted, nor yet do we confess ourselves worthy to attain it;
1:224
not having done, through sloth and weakness, all the things which those who aspire to the best and woo perfection ought to do.
1:225
因此,公義、節制、或擁有其餘任何美德,我們仍只是將要成為而已;
Just, then, or temperate, or possessing any of the other virtues, we are still about to become;
1:226
but that we are lovers, loving with a most keen love—which perhaps belongs to him alone—this wonderful man, friend and spokesman of the virtues, long ago established in us, by implanting a love for his own virtue and for the beauty of justice, whose truly golden face he showed us, and of prudence, desirable to all, and of that most lovely true wisdom, and of godlike temperance, which is the stability and peace of the soul for all who have acquired it, and of most wonderful courage, our endurance, and above all of piety, which they call the mother of the virtues, rightly so saying.
1:227
因為這是一切美德的開端與終結;
For this is the beginning and end of all the virtues;
1:228
因為從這裏出發,其餘的美德便極容易臨到我們;
for, setting out from this, the rest of the virtues would most easily come to us;
1:229
倘若我們渴望、急切要為自己得著那每個人——至少是那不悖逆神、不貪戀宴樂之人——都當得著的這件事,就是成為神的朋友與代言者,並因此操練其餘的美德;
if, desiring and hastening to acquire for ourselves this very thing which every man ought—the man at least who is not godless or pleasure-loving—namely to become a friend and spokesman to God, we should take care of the rest of the virtues;
1:230
so that, not unworthy and defiled, but with all virtue and wisdom, as with some good escort and most wise priest, we might draw near to God.
1:231
And the end of all things is, I think, nothing other than, having been made like to God with a pure mind, to draw near to God and to abide in Him.
1:232
Over and above all his other diligence and earnestness, how could I set forth in words his teaching concerning theology, and his reverence—entering into the very disposition of the man, with what mind and preparation he wished us to learn thoroughly all the discourses concerning the Divine, guarding lest we should somehow be in danger concerning the most necessary thing of all, the knowledge of the Cause of all?
1:233
因為他認為我們該從事哲學,竭盡全力閱讀古時哲學家與詩人的一切著作,不排斥甚麼、也不擯棄甚麼(因為我們那時連判斷力都還沒有);
For he deemed it right that we should philosophize, reading with all our might everything of the writings both of philosophers and of poets of old, rejecting nothing and disapproving nothing (for we did not yet even have the power of judgement);
1:234
唯獨那些屬無神論者的除外,就是凡連屬人的常識都一併失落、竟說沒有神或沒有護理的人(這等東西連讀都不值得,免得我們那將要敬虔的靈魂,在不經意間也被玷污,聽見與敬拜神相違的言論;
except whatever was of the godless, all those who, having tumbled out at once even from human notions, say that there is no God or providence (for these things it is not even worth reading, lest our soul, which is to be pious, be defiled even in passing, hearing arguments contrary to the worship of God;
1:235
因為連那些進殿的人,憑他們自以為有的敬虔,也斷不該沾染任何褻瀆之物);
for not even those who approach the temples should touch at all any of the profane things, by reason of the piety which they suppose they have);
1:236
因此,這等人的東西,在那些立志敬虔的人中,連被列入都不配;
the things of these men, then, are not at all even worth being numbered among men who have undertaken to be pious;
1:237
but all the rest he wished us to meet and converse with, having neither preferred nor again rejected any one race or philosophic school, neither Hellenic nor barbarian, but hearing all.
1:238
這安排是智慧的,且極其巧妙;
Wisely this, and very skilfully;
1:239
lest some one argument of these or those, heard and honoured by itself and alone, even if it happen not to be true, as though it alone were true, slipping into our soul, should deceive it, and disposing it after its own kind should make us its own, no longer able to withdraw or wash ourselves clean, like wools dyed with some fast dye.
1:240
因為人的論辯是一件可畏、滑溜的東西,詭辯繁多而尖銳,它衝進耳中,既烙印心思、又攫住心思,並說服那些一旦被擄獲的人,把它當作真的去愛、使它存留在裏面,即便它是虛假騙人的,也如某個術士般掌權,以那受欺者本人為它的辯護者;
For a dreadful thing and supple is the argument of men, manifold in its sophistries and sharp, which, rushing into the ears, both stamps the mind and lays hold of it, and, having persuaded those once snatched up to love it as true and to abide within, even if it be false and deceitful, like some sorcerer holds sway, having the deceived man himself as its champion;
1:241
靈魂在那論辯的精微面前,因細加考查而疲乏,便往往較草率地把自己交給虛假的論辯與教義,這些教義自己迷誤,又使持守它們的人迷誤;
the soul, wearied by the subtlety of the argument in face of the accuracy of examination, often more carelessly surrenders itself to false arguments and doctrines, themselves astray, and leading astray also those who hold them;
1:242
and not this only, but even if another argument should wish to set it right, no longer receiving it nor being persuaded otherwise, but held fast by the one within it, as by some inexorable tyrant that has gained the mastery over it.
1:243
難道不正是這些事——彼此爭鬥、相互對立的教義——引起了哲學家的派系紛爭麼?有的人抵擋別人的教義,有的人持守這一套、別的人又依附那一套;
For did not these very things—the doctrines fighting and opposing one another—introduce the factions of the philosophers, some setting themselves against the doctrines of others, and some holding to one set and others attaching themselves to others;
1:244
雖然眾人都願意、都自稱要從事哲學——自他們起初被催促之時起——又說他們如今置身於這些論辯之中,意願絕不亞於當初起步之時,倒不如說如今對哲學的愛更深,因為他們(可以說)已得以嚐到它、並在這些論辯中盤桓得更久,勝過當初毫無經驗、繼而被某種衝動激起去從事哲學之時;
and though all wish and profess to philosophize, ever since they were first urged on, and say they wish it no less now that they have come to be among the arguments than as when they began it—rather even that they now have a greater love of philosophy, when (as one might say) it has been their lot even to taste it and to spend further time among the arguments, than when at first, being inexperienced, they were then by some impulse roused to philosophize;
1:245
though they say these things, yet no longer hearken to any arguments of those of differing opinion? Neither, then, has any one of the ancients urged any of the moderns or of those of the Peripatos to turn to him and to philosophize his philosophy, nor conversely, and in short no one any one.
1:246
因為人不會輕易被勸服去依附別人、從自己的轉向別人的——而那些別人的,或許正是他若在從事哲學之前就被它們說服、起初也會喜愛的;
For one would not easily be persuaded to attach himself, transferring from his own to others'—and these perhaps the very ones which, if he had been persuaded by them before he came to philosophize, he would at the first also have loved;
1:247
he was readily persuaded—since, his soul not being preoccupied, he had not yet held fast to arguments—and he would also have loved, similarly being opposed, on account of those, to these which he now holds.
1:248
我們那優秀、最有學問、最善鑽研的希臘人,便是這樣從事哲學的:各人起初偶然遇上甚麼、被某種衝動驅使,便說唯這些是真的,其餘一切別的哲學家的東西,都是欺哄與胡言;
Such things have our fine, most learned and most searching Greeks philosophized, with whatever each one chanced to fall in with from the beginning, driven on by some impulse, saying that these alone are true, and all the rest, of the other philosophers, deception and nonsense;
1:249
他憑論辯確立自己的,並不比別人各自捍衛己說更有道理——說甚麼無論藉必然或勸服,都不需轉換立場、重新思量;
by argument confirming his own no more than each of the others champions his own—as to there being no need to transfer and to deliberate anew, by necessity or persuasion;
1:250
他(若必須說真話)所憑的,無非是那從哲學而來、趨向這些教義的無理性衝動,並(這話說來雖似悖理)他對自以為真之事所作的判斷,無非是那盲目的機運;
having (if one must speak the truth) no other thing than the irrational impulse, coming from philosophy, toward these doctrines, and (lest it be a paradox to say it) no other judgement of the things he supposes true than blind chance;
1:251
各人都愛他起初偶然遇上的這些東西,彷彿被它們捆住,再也無法留意別人的;
each one loving these things which he chanced upon at first, by which as it were bound, he is no longer able to give heed to others;
1:252
倘若他果真能以真理的證明,論說自己關乎萬事的主張、又論說對方的是虛假,並有論辯為他撐腰倒也罷了——否則他便是孤立無援,把自己白白送掉、隨意交付,如同一份意外橫財般任憑那些先佔據他的論辯擺布;
if indeed he should have anything to say with demonstration of the truth of his own concerning all things, and that the things of the opposite party are false, being aided also by argument—since otherwise unaided, having given himself away and surrendered himself at random as a windfall to the arguments that had forestalled him;
1:253
and these tripped up those who held them in other matters too, and indeed also in the greatest and most necessary of all, the knowledge concerning the Divine and piety.
1:254
然而他們仍被某種方式捆綁、留在其中,無人能輕易拯救他們,如同陷在一片極寬廣、難以橫越之平原上的淺灘裏,那地方不容一旦陷入者跑回或越過得救,乃把他們困在裏面直到死;
And yet they remain bound in them in a way, and no one could easily rescue them, as out of a shoal in a most broad and hard-to-cross plain, which no longer allows those who have once fallen in either to run back or to cross over and be saved, but holds them within it until death;
1:255
又如同陷在一片幽深、茂密、高聳的樹林裏,有個旅人進去,本想或許再走出來、把自己重新帶到那叢林之外的曠地,卻因林之遼闊茂密而無法可施,在林中千迴百轉,在裏面找到一些連綿的小徑,沿各樣道路而行,彷彿要藉其中一條走出去;
or as out of a wood deep, dense and high, into which some wayfarer has entered, intending perhaps to set out again and to bring himself once more into the open beyond the thicket, but by reason of its extent and density is unable, turning about ever so much within it, and finding within certain continuous paths, travels along various ways, as though to set out perhaps through one of them;
1:256
可這些徑只通向裏面,斷不通向出口,原是那樹林本身獨有的小徑;
but these lead only inward, and in no way to an exit, being certain paths of the wood itself alone;
1:257
末了那旅人疲憊絕望,彷彿萬物都成了樹林、地上再無別的居所,便願留在那裏,安下爐灶,在林中盡量為自己騰出空地;
and at last the wayfarer, worn out and despairing, as though all things had become wood and there were no longer any dwelling-place on earth, wishes to remain there, having set up his hearth, providing for himself as much open space as possible in the wood;
1:258
an all-wise contrivance, full of passages and cunningly devised with continuous entrances and exits, yet wishing also to go out he is no longer able, having been caught within by a contrivance that seems to him wise.
1:259
And no labyrinth is so hard to thread and intricate, nor wood so dense and intricate, nor plain or shoal, so terrible to master those who draw near, as is argument—if there should be any against these very philosophers.
1:260
In order, then, that we might not suffer the same thing as the many, he did not lead us to some one of the philosophic arguments, nor did he deem it right that we should go off after them alone, but he led us to all, wishing us to be untried by no Hellenic doctrine.
1:261
他自己也與我們同進,在前引路、攙著我們的手,如同在旅途中一般,以防有甚麼歪曲、不實、詭辯的東西迎面而來;
And he himself went in with us, leading the way and taking us by the hand, as on a journey, in case anything crooked, unsound and sophistical should meet us;
1:262
他如同一位行家,因長久浸潤於論辯,對甚麼都不陌生、無一不熟稔,自己高踞於安穩之處,又向別人伸手,使他們得保安全,彷彿把沉溺的人拉拔上來;
as a craftsman who, from his long converse with the arguments, is unaccustomed to nothing nor inexperienced in anything, himself aloft remaining in safety, and reaching out a hand to others he kept them safe, as if hauling up men being drowned;
1:263
凡每位哲學家有用而真實的,他都收集起來、擺在我們面前;
everything that was useful and true of each of the philosophers he gathered and set before us;
1:264
but whatever was false he separated out—both the rest, and especially all that was peculiar to men's piety.
1:265
論到這些事,他勸我們不要理會,即便有某位全智之人被眾人作見證稱許也不可,乃要單單留意神與祂的眾先知;
Concerning these things he counselled us to give no heed, not even if some all-wise man should be attested by all men, but to give heed to God alone and to His prophets;
1:266
他親自講解、闡明凡幽暗難解之事——聖言中這類的事甚多(或是因為神喜悅這樣與人交談,免得那神聖的話語赤露、無遮蔽地進入一個不配的靈魂,如眾人那樣;或是因為一切神聖的諭言本性極其清晰、極其簡明,於我們這些離棄了神、忘卻如何聆聽的人,卻因年代久遠而顯得晦澀幽暗——這我說不上來);
himself interpreting and clarifying whatever was dark and enigmatic—as many such things are in the sacred voices (whether because it is thus pleasing to God to converse with men, so that the divine word may not enter naked and uncovered into an unworthy soul, such as the many are; or because every divine oracle is by nature most clear and most simple, but to us, having fallen from God and unlearned how to listen, appears, by reason of time and antiquity, obscure and dark—I cannot say);
1:267
他卻把它們講解、引到光中,無論它們碰巧是謎一般的,因他是神有力而至聰穎的聆聽者;
but clarifying and bringing into light, whether they happened to be riddles, being a powerful and most intelligent hearer of God;
1:268
或者它們本性並無歪曲、於他也無不可解之處——因他這樣的稟賦,在如今活人中是獨一的(這等人我自己認識的、與我聽別人提及的,都算在內),他操練得以在自己靈魂中領受那純淨的諭言為光明,並教導別人;
or whether they had nothing crooked by nature nor unintelligible to him—being thus disposed, alone of men now living (of whom I myself have known and have heard others speak concerning some), having practised to receive in his soul the pure oracles as luminous, and to teach others;
1:269
因為它們的作者、那萬有的元首,就是那向神的朋友眾先知低語、向他們暗授一切預言與奧祕、神聖之言的,這樣尊崇他,竟立他為朋友與代言者;
because their Author, the leader of all, who whispers to the prophets, friends of God, and suggests all prophecy and mystic and divine word, so honoured him as to appoint him a friend and spokesman;
