And if someone should take these as referring to the rivers of sensible things, it is no great matter not to be overwhelmed by sensible rivers, since many other base persons have experienced this beforehand; but it is a great thing not to be swept away by the streams of the opposing energies, nor by their measureless wickedness—which very things prove to be the fitting reward of the righteous man and his proper end.

The firmament, then, that came to be in the midst of the water is a principle that makes manifest a distinction existing according to disposition; being set within the governing faculty by God, it separates the base things from the good, so that one may thus even choose.

You should not, however, understand this separation in a bodily manner; consider how it is spoken of by Abraham to the rich man who asked that Lazarus be sent to him:

'A great chasm has been fixed between us' — showing that virtue is separated from vice, not by place, but by the divergence and contrariety of their difference.

For since righteousness cannot coexist with unrighteousness, the righteous man and the unrighteous man cannot be in the same place — and by 'the same' I mean not the same location but the same habit and disposition.

Just as, therefore, in that passage the difference between virtue and vice is called a chasm dividing evil from good, so also now God has made a firmament in the midst of the water — that is, in the governing faculty — that there might come to be a discernment of good and evil.

And since by nature the good bears upward, while evil drags downward the one who uses it willingly — for the feet of folly lead those who employ it down to Hades along with death — the worse things are below, whereas the things that practice virtue belong to the realm above (for the Lord takes up the meek); the firmament, which is the principle of faith and virtue, usefully keeps the worse apart from the earnest, so that neither may they [come together]... nor down...

For to be constructed is not dishonourable — one may see certain other parts that are lowly, such as hairs and the like, and surely no one who understands how to judge the proportion of a city would blame the builder because, along with the honoured and beautified places in the city, he also built a prison and other such things —

'Day' is understood in two ways: both according to the interval of time and according to the illumination of the air around us.
1:253⧉ ⤴︎
在「第三日」一語中,所表明的是日子的分量長度,而非那日是明亮還是陰暗;
And in 'the third day,' the quantity of the day is signified, not whether the day is bright or gloomy;
1:254⧉ ⤴︎
but when someone says that today is a gloomy day, he does not say this looking to its quantity.
1:255⧉ ⤴︎
所以,神聖的話語若說在太陽及其餘發光體生成之先,已有頭一日、第二日、第三日存在,就當著眼於時間間距的分量;並要對那對神聖經文感到困惑的人說:在穹蒼受造之後、發光體尚未造成之時,彷彿已經過了七十二小時,這並不足為奇;
If, then, the divine word says that a first and a second and a third day existed before the coming-to-be of the sun and the other luminaries, one must look to the quantity of the temporal interval; and to the one who is perplexed at the divine Scripture it must be said that seventy-two hours, as it were, came to pass after the creation of the firmament, when the luminaries had not yet been made — and this is nothing to marvel at;
1:256⧉ ⤴︎
for the sun is not the producer of the day but its signifier, since one would say that instruments mechanically constructed to measure the hours are not the producers of those hours but their indicators.
1:257⧉ ⤴︎
The sun, then, and the moon signify the seasons, and do not make them.
1:258⧉ ⤴︎
And to signify is a different thing from to make; so that there is nothing absurd in so great an interval having existed beforehand, prior to the creation of the sun and the other luminaries — an interval which, if there had been anything to signify it, would have amounted to a span of three days.
1:259⧉ ⤴︎
'Let the water that is under the heaven be gathered together into one gathering, and let the dry land appear.'
1:260⧉ ⤴︎
We understand this saying of God in the same way as those that came before, when it was said 'and God said':
1:261⧉ ⤴︎
'Let there be light' and 'Let there be a firmament.'
1:262⧉ ⤴︎
And let the literal exposition of the section set forth be this:
1:263⧉ ⤴︎
神所吩咐的,並非一切的水,乃是天以下的水,要聚集成一處;
God commands, not all water, but the water beneath the heaven, to be gathered into one gathering;
1:264⧉ ⤴︎
for it has been said that the firmament came to be in the midst of the waters, so that part of the water remained above and part below.
1:265⧉ ⤴︎
而這吩咐的用處,他藉著說「使旱地露出來」而顯明;
And the usefulness of the command he makes clear by saying 'and let the dry land appear';
1:266⧉ ⤴︎
for while the waters lay upon it, it was hidden, and being in such a state it was ill-suited for the coming-to-be of plants and living creatures.
1:267⧉ ⤴︎
「水便聚在它們的聚集之處。」正如人所能說的,那存於吩咐中的是一回事,那存於成就中的又是另一回事;
'The water was gathered together into their gatherings.' And the thing in the command is one, as one might say, but the thing in the accomplishment is another;
1:268⧉ ⤴︎
for all the water was ordered to be gathered into one gathering, but the corresponding statement says that the water was gathered 'into their gatherings,' and that thus the dry land appeared.
1:269⧉ ⤴︎
But this seeming discrepancy will be set right by the one who presides over the narrative in this way.
1:270⧉ ⤴︎
海只有一個,就是那環繞整個人所居之地的大洋;
There is one sea, the ocean, which encompasses the whole inhabited world;
