教師的雛鳥就是那些藉著他們而相信的人;
And the nestlings of the teachers are those who through them come to faith;
1:5014⧉ ⤴︎
for they are spiritual fathers.
1:5015⧉ ⤴︎
And it is the custom of the God-inspired Scripture to liken the holy mystagogues to turtledoves.
1:5016⧉ ⤴︎
這是為什麼緣故呢?斑鳩最為善鳴、聲音清亮;
And for what reason? The turtledove is most talkative and clear-voiced;
1:5017⧉ ⤴︎
and for us who love learning, so are the words of those who instruct us in the mysteries.
1:5018⧉ ⤴︎
These, then, are indeed spiritual turtledoves.
1:5019⧉ ⤴︎
And it is not the soul alone that rejoices and exults, but the body too has shared in the gladness, having received the hope of the resurrection.
1:5020⧉ ⤴︎
For this is what the word hints at.
1:5021⧉ ⤴︎
For since both the Babylonian gods, and indeed also those of our forefathers, were altogether lifeless and without sensation, quite fittingly do those who have been freed from them name the true God the living One.
1:5022⧉ ⤴︎
[Blessed are those who dwell in Your house.
1:5023⧉ ⤴︎
因為那些精通聖潔追求的人,尤其是在教會中收集救恩的機緣;
For it is especially in the churches that those who are versed in holy pursuits gather the occasions of salvation;
1:5024⧉ ⤴︎
for in them the Holy Spirit speaks through holy prophets, through the voice of apostles and evangelists.
1:5025⧉ ⤴︎
正如在醫者的診所裡,患病的人眾多,有時甚至患的是不同的病,然而各人都能得著合宜的醫治;
And just as in a physician's surgery there are many who are sick, sometimes even in different ways, yet it is possible for each to obtain the fitting treatment;
1:5026⧉ ⤴︎
so also do we find it in the churches.] He has set ascents in his heart.
1:5027⧉ ⤴︎
And what sort of ascents? Those to heaven, evidently.
1:5028⧉ ⤴︎
[The God of gods who appeared in the flesh.
1:5029⧉ ⤴︎
所以我們不要熱心去隨從猶太人的無知,倒要更加相信祂實在也是那子,是出於神的神,祂按肉體從婦人而生,為我們的緣故降卑到我們的境況中,好將我們帶回祂自己的榮耀裡,使那受奴役的在祂裡面得以成為兒子;
Let us not, then, be zealous to follow the Jewish ignorances, but rather let us believe that He is truly the Son as well, and God of God, who according to the flesh from a woman came down for our sakes into our condition, that He might bring us back into His own glory, that in Him what is enslaved might be made a son;
1:5030⧉ ⤴︎
that what is subject to death might become superior to death, and what is under sin might become holy.
1:5031⧉ ⤴︎
For all these things we have gained as our riches through the appearing of Christ, the Saviour of us all.] O Lord God of hosts.
1:5032⧉ ⤴︎
And he names Christ Lord of hosts and God of Jacob, so that no one may suppose Him a recent God on account of His birth according to the flesh, but that we may rather believe Him to be that One whom the fathers of Israel themselves also served, whom they beheld in foreknowledge, whose mystery they did not fail to know—God the Father, that is, revealing it, and through the illumination of the Holy Spirit.
1:5033⧉ ⤴︎
I chose to be cast aside in the house of God rather than to dwell in the tents of sinners.
1:5034⧉ ⤴︎
For the things which he reaped in one single day of Yours he could not gather from elsewhere, though he spent many thousands of days.
1:5035⧉ ⤴︎
These words were fitting to be spoken even to the captives in Babylon, who were compelled to live among impious men, deriving thence no gain whatever, but reckoning on the benefit that would again come from God to the temple.
1:5036⧉ ⤴︎
[For the Lord loves mercy and truth.
1:5037⧉ ⤴︎
先知為這詩篇加上了美好的印記——就是對神的盼望,緊緊持守這盼望乃是有福的;
The prophet set upon the psalm a fair seal—hope in God, to which it is blessed to hold fast;
1:5038⧉ ⤴︎
for it becomes an anchor to him who is storm-tossed, and to him who is warred against an unbreakable wall.] PSALM 85.
1:5039⧉ ⤴︎

To You will I cry the whole day long.
1:5040⧉ ⤴︎

1:5041⧉ ⤴︎

'His foundations are in the holy mountains.'
1:5043⧉ ⤴︎
The God-inspired Scripture likens the Church to mountains, on account of the loftiness of the divine doctrines that are in her.
1:5044⧉ ⤴︎
By 'mountains,' then, we understand the Churches, or rather those who are in them.
1:5045⧉ ⤴︎
For we are temples of the living God, and a house of God, according to the Scriptures.
1:5046⧉ ⤴︎

And what these foundations are that Christ lays in us, Paul will teach us when he says:
1:5047⧉ ⤴︎
and in addition to these, courage and endurance, temperance and self-control, gentleness and long-suffering, and, in a word, every form of virtue.
1:5048⧉ ⤴︎
地上的錫安,就是在猶太地那座,固然是耶路撒冷的一部分,但它高踞其上,彷彿坐落在山上;
The earthly Zion, which is in the region of Judea, is indeed a part of Jerusalem, yet it lies high up and as it were upon a mountain;
1:5049⧉ ⤴︎
and for this reason it is also interpreted as 'watchtower.'
1:5050⧉ ⤴︎
To this Zion, then, which lies as upon a mountain, the sacred Writing likens the Church, that is, the multitude of those who have believed.

因為律法原來一無所成。頭一個約已經廢去,它不過是有影兒的預表,僅有真理的外形;
For the law made nothing perfect. For the first covenant has ceased, having a foreshadowing that was but a shadow, and only the outward form of the truth;

The Church of Christ shall therefore be, He says, flashing like lightning and illuminating all that is under heaven, and abiding perpetually like the sun and the moon.

正如在天上沒有人能熄滅日月的光輪,照樣在人間也沒有人能使教會的光輝,就是那屬靈的燦爛,有所黯淡;

For it was not the Father who rejected and set at nought His own Son; rather, it was the Jews who did this, though by the permission of God and the Father.
1:5103⧉ ⤴︎

Yet He did not remain among the dead, nor did the Passion attach any dishonour to Him; rather He was the more glorified through it.

For since, being wholly God by nature and true Son and Lord of the powers, He endured to suffer—though able not to suffer, had He willed not to suffer—and You too, O Father, kept silent, for this reason we say, 'You did not take hold of him.'

Therefore, even if those who plot against the worshippers of God be many, he says, and beyond number, yet you shall see them falling on this side and on that, while you yourself are marvellously saved through Him who stands before you and fights on your behalf.

for they refer them to the very person of Christ, joining the verses and saying: 'For You, O Lord, are my hope; You have made the Most High your refuge.'

It is among the most absurd things that we, who know the mystery exactly and have believed that He is God and the Son of God, and that for our sake and after our likeness He became man, should suppose that these verses are spoken concerning Him.

For just as fathers according to the flesh, when they see a road rough and hard to travel, snatch up their infants into their arms, lest somehow the child be hurt, having a tender foot and being unable as yet to walk over hard ground, so also do the rational powers deal with those not yet strong enough to labour, but who have, as it were, a childlike understanding: they do not allow them to toil beyond their strength, but draw them out of every temptation, lest somehow, through faintheartedness, they come under the feet of Satan and renounce their purpose of serving God.

The asp and the basilisk may be understood as the lion and the dragon, and also those who are wont to serve his will, and are imitators of the perversity that is in him — the bitter, terrible, and utterly grievous ones, who differ in nothing from wild beasts, but copy also the venomousness of poisonous creatures.

「在早晨並在夜間傳揚」,就是指白晝與黑夜「慈愛與信實」。而「傳揚」就是「宣告」;
'To proclaim in the morning and by night,' that is, by day and by night, 'mercy and truth.' And 'to proclaim' is 'to make known';
1:5230⧉ ⤴︎
也就是頌讚。那麼所傳揚的是甚麼呢?就是神與父的慈愛與信實;
which is to glorify. And what is that which is proclaimed? The mercy and the truth of God and the Father;
1:5231⧉ ⤴︎
for in Him we have obtained mercy, we have been justified in faith, we have been sanctified through the Spirit, we have been redeemed from the greed of the devil, we have been appointed as sons, we have become heirs of the kingdom of heaven.
1:5232⧉ ⤴︎
如此,神與父就在基督裡憐憫了我們;
God and the Father, then, had mercy on us in Christ;
1:5233⧉ ⤴︎
and He taught us through Him the truth, that is, the worship and service in spirit and in truth.] ['In your work.'
1:5234⧉ ⤴︎
The 'work' is the most excellent thing, indeed the accomplishment of the counsel of God and the Father, and, as it were, the work of His hand — the power of the dispensation on our behalf — as Christ Himself taught us:
1:5235⧉ ⤴︎
'For God so loved the world,' He says, 'that He gave His only-begotten Son;'
1:5236⧉ ⤴︎
'that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.'] 'A senseless man will not know these things.'
1:5237⧉ ⤴︎
因為並非人人都能單憑己力明白基督這樣深奧而可敬的奧祕;
For it does not belong to all men simply to be able to understand so deep and venerable a mystery of Christ;
1:5238⧉ ⤴︎
but rather to those to whom the Father Himself should reveal it.
1:5239⧉ ⤴︎
['When the sinners spring up.']
1:5240⧉ ⤴︎
祂說:「他們發生如草」,就是像田間的青草;
'They sprang up,' He says, 'as grass,' that is, as a plant in a field;
1:5241⧉ ⤴︎
他們暫時開了花,此後便一探頭又枯萎了;
and having blossomed for a little while, thereafter they peeped out and withered;
1:5242⧉ ⤴︎
that is, they were bowed down and brought low, and went down to utter destruction — those who work iniquity against Christ.] ['But you are Most High,' and so forth.
1:5243⧉ ⤴︎
因為神那位獨生的道乃是至高者,縱然祂使自己甘願虛己,穿上人性的卑微,為要將人的本性重新鍛造成不朽壞,並高舉那卑微的,尊貴那被藐視的,好藉著得兒子名分的恩典使那作奴僕的得著榮光;
For the only-begotten Word of God is Most High, even though He submitted Himself to a voluntary emptying and put on the lowliness of humanity, in order that He might refashion the nature of man unto incorruption, and exalt what was lowly, and honour what was dishonoured, so that by the grace of adoption He might make the slave radiant;
1:5244⧉ ⤴︎
因為祂本來富足,卻與我們一同成了貧窮,好叫我們因祂的貧窮可以成為富足。如此,神的道乃是至高者,縱然祂成了人;
for He became poor together with us, though He was rich, in order that we by His poverty might become rich. The Word of God, then, is Most High, even though He became man;
1:5245⧉ ⤴︎
for He did not cease to be God, but remained what He was.
1:5246⧉ ⤴︎
他說:「主啊,因為你始終如一、恆常不變,仍舊為至高者長存於高天之上,歷經萬世不遷不改,不轉動、不改變,乃是無窮無盡地與你自己一樣;
'For You,' he says, 'O Lord, being ever the same and in like manner, remain Most High in the heights, unchanging throughout all the age, not turning, not altering, but remaining infinitely like unto Yourself;
1:5247⧉ ⤴︎
but we the lowly, who are far removed from Your power, are borne about now from one quarter, now from another, and are changed.'] ['And he shall be exalted as the horn of the unicorn.'
1:5248⧉ ⤴︎
人說,那獨角獸乃是一種在額上豎起一隻角的動物,那角高聳而不可折斷;
They say that the unicorn is an animal upon whose forehead a single horn is raised, lofty and unbreakable;
1:5249⧉ ⤴︎
牠用這角來對付別的動物,總是得勝,總是佔上風;
using which against the other animals, it always conquers and prevails;
1:5250⧉ ⤴︎
and it is strong and hard to withstand.

1:5252⧉ ⤴︎
And when I say the new people, understand those who are justified through faith, who have conquered all the nations. [ And my eye looked upon my enemies.
1:5253⧉ ⤴︎
) The phrase 'looked upon' means to behold one's enemies fallen and the adversaries grown feeble.
1:5254⧉ ⤴︎
These are they who war against the truth and against the glory of God, arming their own audacity.
1:5255⧉ ⤴︎
