11:1⧉ ⤴︎
'For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection.'
11:2⧉ ⤴︎
我先前所說的,如今也要再說:他不斷地轉入道德的教訓,並不像在別的書信中那樣把它們分為兩部分——把前半部分歸給教義,後半部分歸給品行的照管;
What I have said before, this I will say now also: that he continually passes over into moral discourse, not, as in the other Epistles, dividing them into two—assigning the first part to doctrines and the other to the care of morals;
11:3⧉ ⤴︎
but here it is not so; rather, throughout the whole of it he does this in a mixed way, so that the discourse may be readily received.
11:4⧉ ⤴︎
所以他說,這裡有兩種治死、兩種死亡;
He says, then, that there are here two mortifications and two deaths;
11:5⧉ ⤴︎
and that the one has been effected by Christ in baptism, but the other must be brought about by us through the diligence that follows after.
11:6⧉ ⤴︎
因為從前的罪得以埋葬,乃是出於祂的恩賜;
For that former sins were buried was a matter of His gift;
11:7⧉ ⤴︎
but to remain dead to sin after baptism must be the work of our own diligence, even though here too we see God to a very great degree helping us.
11:8⧉ ⤴︎
For baptism has power not only to blot out former transgressions, but also to secure us against those to come.
11:9⧉ ⤴︎
所以正如在對付從前那些罪時,你獻上了信心,使它們得以塗抹;
As therefore in the case of those former sins you brought in faith, that they might be blotted out;
11:10⧉ ⤴︎
so also in the case of those that come after, show the change of your zeal, that you may not again defile yourself.
11:11⧉ ⤴︎
For it is counseling these things and such as these that he says:
11:12⧉ ⤴︎
'For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death, we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection.'
11:13⧉ ⤴︎
你看他如何提升了聽者,立時把他引到他自己的主那裡,並切望顯明這極大的相似?因此他甚至不說「與祂的死聯合」,免得你辯駁,卻說「與祂死的形狀聯合」;
Do you see how he lifted up the hearer, at once raising him up to his own Master, and being eager to show the great likeness? For this reason he did not even say 'To His death,' lest you should contradict, but 'To the likeness of His death';
11:14⧉ ⤴︎
for it was not the substance itself that died, but the man that is of sins—that is to say, wickedness.
11:15⧉ ⤴︎
他也沒有說:「我們若在祂死的形狀上有分」;
And he did not say, 'For if we have shared in the likeness of His death';
11:16⧉ ⤴︎
but what? 'For if we have been planted together'—by the name of the planting hinting at the fruit that comes from it.
11:17⧉ ⤴︎
因為正如祂的身體埋在地裡,結出了全世界之救恩的果子;
For just as His body, buried in the earth, brought forth as fruit the salvation of the whole world;
11:18⧉ ⤴︎
照樣,我們自己的身體埋在洗禮中,也結出了公義、成聖、得兒子的名分,以及無數的美物為果子;
so also our own, buried in baptism, brought forth as fruit righteousness, sanctification, adoption as sons, and countless good things;
11:19⧉ ⤴︎
and it will bring forth later also the gift of the resurrection.
11:20⧉ ⤴︎
既然如此,我們是埋在水中,祂卻埋在地裡;我們是就罪而言,祂卻是就身體而言,因此他不說「與那死聯合而栽種」,卻說「與祂死的形狀聯合」;
Since, then, we are buried in water, but He in earth, and we as regards sin, but He as regards the body, for this reason he did not say, 'Planted together in the death,' but, 'In the likeness of His death';
11:21⧉ ⤴︎
for both this and that are death, but not of the same subject.
11:22⧉ ⤴︎
他說:「所以我們若在那死上與祂聯合而栽種,也必在復活上與祂聯合」;
'If, therefore,' he says, 'we have been planted together in the death, we shall be also in the resurrection';
11:23⧉ ⤴︎
meaning here by resurrection the one to come.
11:24⧉ ⤴︎
因為他先前論到死時曾說:「弟兄們,豈不知我們這受洗歸入基督的人,是受洗歸入祂的死嗎?」在此他並未清楚地論到復活,反倒是論到受洗之後的行事為人,吩咐我們要一舉一動有新生的樣式;
For since, having earlier discoursed concerning death and having said, 'Or know ye not, brethren, that so many of us as were baptized into Christ were baptized into His death?', he had said nothing clearly concerning the resurrection, but rather concerning the manner of life after baptism, having bidden us walk in newness of life;
11:25⧉ ⤴︎
for this reason, here taking up again the same subject, he now further proclaims to us that resurrection in advance.
11:26⧉ ⤴︎
為要叫你明白他所說的並非這由洗禮而來的復活,乃是那另一種復活;
And that you may learn that he speaks not concerning this resurrection which is from baptism, but concerning that other one;
11:27⧉ ⤴︎
having said, 'For if we have been planted together in the likeness of His death,' he did not say, 'We shall be of the likeness of the resurrection,' but, 'And of the resurrection.'
11:28⧉ ⤴︎
因為免得你說:「我們若沒有像祂那樣死了,怎能像祂那樣復活呢?」所以他提到死時,並不說「與那死聯合而栽種」,而說「與祂死的形狀聯合」;
For lest you should say, 'And how, if we have not died as He died, shall we rise as He rose?'—when he made mention of death, he did not say, 'Planted together in the death,' but, 'In the likeness of His death';
11:29⧉ ⤴︎
but when he made mention of the resurrection, he did not say, 'In the likeness of the resurrection,' but, 'Of the resurrection itself.'
11:30⧉ ⤴︎
And he did not say, 'We have become,' but, 'We shall be,' by this word again indicating that resurrection which has not yet come to pass, but is to come.
11:31⧉ ⤴︎
Then, wishing to make his argument worthy of belief, he shows that another resurrection has taken place here, prior to that one, so that from the present resurrection you may believe also in the one to come.
11:32⧉ ⤴︎
For having said that we shall be planted together in the likeness of his resurrection, he added:
11:33⧉ ⤴︎
我們知道這事,就是我們的舊人已經與他同釘十字架,好叫罪身失效;
Knowing this, that our old man was crucified with him, that the body of sin might be done away with;
11:34⧉ ⤴︎
at once setting down both the cause and the proof of the resurrection to come.
11:35⧉ ⤴︎
And he did not say 'He was crucified,' but 'He was crucified with him,' thus bringing baptism close to the cross.
11:36⧉ ⤴︎
Wherefore also above he said, We have become planted together in the likeness of his death, that the body of sin might be done away with — not calling this body of ours by that name, but all our wickedness.
11:37⧉ ⤴︎
For just as by 'the old man' he means the whole of vice, so also by 'the body' of that man he means once again the wickedness that is compounded of its various parts.
11:38⧉ ⤴︎
And that what has been said is no mere conjecture, hear how Paul himself interprets this very point in what follows.
11:39⧉ ⤴︎
For having said, That the body of sin might be done away with, he added:
11:40⧉ ⤴︎
That we should no longer be enslaved to sin.
11:41⧉ ⤴︎
For it is in this respect that I wish it to be dead — not so as to be abolished and to die, but so as not to sin.
11:42⧉ ⤴︎
And going forward he makes it yet clearer:
11:43⧉ ⤴︎
For he that is dead, he says, has been justified from sin.
11:44⧉ ⤴︎
He says this concerning every man, that just as one who is dead is henceforth freed from sinning, lying there a corpse, so also is he who has come up from baptism.
11:45⧉ ⤴︎
For since he died there once for all, he must remain forever dead to sin.
11:46⧉ ⤴︎
所以你若在洗禮中死了,就當保持是死的;
If therefore you died in baptism, remain dead;
11:47⧉ ⤴︎
因為凡死了的人,都不能再犯罪了;
for indeed everyone who has died can no longer sin;
11:48⧉ ⤴︎
but if you sin, you do outrage to the gift of God.
11:49⧉ ⤴︎
Having therefore required of us so great a philosophy of life, he quickly brought in the crown as well, saying:
11:50⧉ ⤴︎
Now if we died with Christ.
11:51⧉ ⤴︎
然而這事本身,甚至在冠冕之先,就已是最大的冠冕——就是得與主同有交通;
And yet this very thing, even before the crown, is itself the greatest crown — to have fellowship with the Master;
11:52⧉ ⤴︎
'nevertheless,' he says, 'I give you also another reward.'
11:53⧉ ⤴︎
And what then is this? Eternal life.
11:54⧉ ⤴︎
For we believe, he says, that we shall also live together with him.
11:55⧉ ⤴︎
And whence is this evident? Knowing that Christ, being raised from the dead, dies no more.
11:56⧉ ⤴︎
And consider again his earnest contention, and how he establishes his point from the very opposites.
11:57⧉ ⤴︎
For since it was likely that some were troubled on account of the cross and the death, he shows that for this very reason one ought henceforth to take courage.
11:58⧉ ⤴︎
'For do not,' he says, 'because he once died, suppose him to be mortal;'
11:59⧉ ⤴︎
因為正是為此,他才長存不死;
for indeed on this very account he remains immortal;
11:60⧉ ⤴︎
因為他的死已成了死亡的死;
for his death has become the death of death;
11:61⧉ ⤴︎
並且他既死了,正因如此,他就不再死了;
and because he died, for this very reason he dies no more;
11:62⧉ ⤴︎
for that death also he died to sin.
11:63⧉ ⤴︎
What is 'to sin'? That is, he was not liable to it either, but he died on account of our sin.
11:64⧉ ⤴︎
For in order that he might destroy it, and cut its sinews and all its power, for this cause he died.
11:65⧉ ⤴︎
你看見他如何使人生出敬畏了嗎?因為他若不再死第二次,也就沒有第二次的洗;
Do you see how he inspired fear? For if he dies not a second time, neither is there a second washing;
11:66⧉ ⤴︎
and if there is no second washing, neither should you be prone to sin.
11:67⧉ ⤴︎
For all these things he says in opposition to that saying, Let us do evil, that good may come; and to that, Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?
11:68⧉ ⤴︎
Rooting out then such a supposition by the roots, he sets down all these things.
11:69⧉ ⤴︎
他說:他既活著,就是向神活著;
But in that he lives, he lives unto God, he says;
11:70⧉ ⤴︎
that is, indissolubly, so as to be no longer held fast by death.
11:71⧉ ⤴︎
因為連那先前的死,他也是在自己並不欠債的情形下死的,乃是為著別人的罪;
For if even the former death he died though not liable to it, but on account of others' sin;
11:72⧉ ⤴︎
much more now will he not die, having destroyed it.
11:73⧉ ⤴︎
Which also in the Epistle to the Hebrews he said:
11:74⧉ ⤴︎
For once, he says, at the consummation of the ages, he has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.
11:75⧉ ⤴︎
And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, so also Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, shall appear a second time without sin, unto salvation, to those who wait for him.
11:76⧉ ⤴︎
他也指明了那照神而活之生命的力量,以及罪的權勢;
And he shows both the strength of the life that is according to God, and the power of sin;
11:77⧉ ⤴︎
論到那生命,就是他不再死了;
of the life, that he dies no more;
11:78⧉ ⤴︎
and of sin, that if this made even the sinless one to die, how shall it not destroy those who are liable? Then, since he had discoursed concerning his life, lest someone should say, 'What then has what has been said to do with us?' he added:
11:79⧉ ⤴︎
So also do you reckon yourselves, he says, to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God.
11:80⧉ ⤴︎
Well did he say, 'Reckon,' since it is not yet possible to set before the eye what is spoken of.
11:81⧉ ⤴︎
他說:我們當看甚麼呢?就是向罪是死的,向神卻是活的,是在我們的主基督耶穌裡;
And what do we reckon? he says. To be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God, in Christ Jesus our Lord;
11:82⧉ ⤴︎
因為凡這樣活著的人,必得著各樣的美德,因有耶穌自己作他的盟友;
for he that so lives will lay hold of every virtue, having Jesus himself as his ally;
11:83⧉ ⤴︎
for this is what 'in Christ' means.
11:84⧉ ⤴︎
For if he raised us up when we were dead, much more will he be able to hold us fast when we are living.
11:85⧉ ⤴︎
Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, so that you should obey it in its lusts.
11:86⧉ ⤴︎
他沒有說「不要容肉體活著,也不要容它有所作為」,而是說「不要容罪作王」;
He did not say, 'Let not the flesh live, nor let it be active,' but 'Let not sin reign;'
11:87⧉ ⤴︎
for he came not to destroy nature, but to set right the will's free choice.
11:88⧉ ⤴︎
Then, showing that we are not held by wickedness through force and necessity, but willingly, he did not say, 'Let it not tyrannize,' which would have implied necessity, but 'Let it not reign.'
11:89⧉ ⤴︎
因為當我們正被領往天上的國度,卻仍以罪為女王;當我們蒙召要與基督同作王,卻甘願淪為罪的俘虜——這實在是荒謬的;
For indeed it is absurd, when we are being led to the kingdom of heaven, to have sin as our queen, and when we are called to reign together with Christ, to choose to become captives of sin;
11:90⧉ ⤴︎
just as if a man, casting the diadem from his head, should wish to be a slave to a woman who is demon-possessed, a beggar, and clothed in rags.
11:91⧉ ⤴︎
Then, since to get the better of sin is a heavy thing, see how he also showed it to be light, and consoled the labor by saying, 'In your mortal body.'
11:92⧉ ⤴︎
因為這話表明那些爭戰是暫時的,很快便告結束;
For this shows that the contests are temporary, and quickly brought to an end;
11:93⧉ ⤴︎
同時他也提醒我們,記起自己從前的種種惡行,以及死亡的根源;
and at the same time he reminds us both of our former evils, and of the root of death;
11:94⧉ ⤴︎
for it was from this that from the beginning it became mortal.
11:95⧉ ⤴︎
But it is possible, even having a mortal body, not to sin.
11:96⧉ ⤴︎
你看見基督恩典的豐盛了嗎?因為亞當雖尚未有必死之身,卻也失足跌倒了;
Do you see the abundance of Christ's grace? For Adam, though not yet mortal, slipped and fell;
11:97⧉ ⤴︎
but you, though having a body that is already liable even to death, will be able to be crowned.
11:98⧉ ⤴︎
And how then does sin reign? he says. Not from its own power, but from your slothfulness.
11:99⧉ ⤴︎
For this reason, having said, 'Let it not reign,' he also shows the manner of such a reign, adding and saying:
11:100⧉ ⤴︎
So that you should obey it in its lusts.
11:101⧉ ⤴︎
For it is no honor to be permitted to indulge oneself in all things with unbridled license, but rather the utmost slavery and the very height of dishonor.
11:102⧉ ⤴︎
因為當一個人隨心所欲、為所欲為之時,他便喪失了一切的自由;
For whenever a man does whatever he wishes, then it is that he is stripped of all freedom;
11:103⧉ ⤴︎
but whenever he is held in check, then above all does he preserve his own proper dignity.
11:104⧉ ⤴︎
'Neither present your members as weapons of unrighteousness unto sin, but as weapons of righteousness.'
11:105⧉ ⤴︎
如此看來,身體乃是介於惡與德之間,正如兵器也是如此;
The body, then, stands midway between vice and virtue, just as weapons also do;
11:106⧉ ⤴︎
and each of the deeds comes to pass according to him who uses it.
11:107⧉ ⤴︎
這就好像一個為祖國作戰的士兵,與一個持械攻擊居民的強盜,都用同樣的兵器來武裝自己一樣;
It is just as if both a soldier contending for his fatherland, and a robber arming himself against the inhabitants, were to be equipped with the very same weapons;
11:108⧉ ⤴︎
for the blame lies not with the full suit of armor, but with those who use it for evil.
11:109⧉ ⤴︎
This same thing may also be said of the flesh, since both this and that come to pass according to the resolve of the soul, and not according to its own nature.
11:110⧉ ⤴︎
因為你若貪戀那不屬於你的美色,眼睛就成了不義的兵器——這並非因著它本有的功用(因為眼睛的本分是看見,而非邪惡地看),乃是因著那發出命令之思念的邪惡;
For if you should busy yourself with a beauty that is not your own, the eye has become a weapon of unrighteousness — not because of its own proper working (for it belongs to the eye to see, not to see wickedly), but because of the wickedness of the reasoning that gave the command;
11:111⧉ ⤴︎
but if you bridle it, it has become a weapon of righteousness.
11:112⧉ ⤴︎
So too with the tongue, so too with the hands, and with all the other members.
11:113⧉ ⤴︎
他稱罪為「不義」,實在是恰當的;
And well did he call sin 'unrighteousness';
11:114⧉ ⤴︎
for he who sins wrongs either himself or his neighbor — rather, himself before his neighbor.
11:115⧉ ⤴︎
Having therefore led them away from wickedness, he leads them toward virtue, saying:
11:116⧉ ⤴︎
'But present yourselves unto God, as those alive from the dead.'
11:117⧉ ⤴︎
See how he exhorts by the bare names alone: there naming 'sin,' but here 'God.'
11:118⧉ ⤴︎
For having shown how great is the distance between the two that reign, he cast the soldier out of all pardon — the soldier who had forsaken God, yet desired to be marshaled under the kingdom of sin.
11:119⧉ ⤴︎
And not by this alone, but also through what follows he establishes this, saying, 'As those alive from the dead.'
11:120⧉ ⤴︎
both the ruin of that former state, and the greatness of the gift of God.
11:121⧉ ⤴︎
'For consider,' he says, 'what you were, and what you have become.'
11:122⧉ ⤴︎
那麼,你們從前是何等人呢?是死了的、滅亡了的,那滅亡是無論從何處都無法得著矯正的;
What, then, were you? Dead and lost, with a destruction that could in no way be set right from any quarter;
11:123⧉ ⤴︎
for there was no one able to help.
11:124⧉ ⤴︎
And what have you become out of those dead ones? Living with an immortal life.
11:125⧉ ⤴︎
And through whom? Through God who is able to do all things.
11:126⧉ ⤴︎
It is right, therefore, to be marshaled under Him with as great an eagerness as befits those who have become living from the dead.
11:127⧉ ⤴︎
'And your members as weapons of righteousness unto God.'
11:128⧉ ⤴︎
The body, then, is not evil, if indeed it is possible for it to become a weapon of righteousness.
11:129⧉ ⤴︎
And by saying 'weapon,' he made plain that a grievous war also is at hand.
11:130⧉ ⤴︎
Wherefore we also have need of strong armor, and of a noble resolve well acquainted with these wars, and above all of a commander.
11:131⧉ ⤴︎
But the Commander stands at hand, ever ready for the alliance, and remaining unconquerable; and He has furnished us with strong weapons too. What remains is a purpose that wields them for what is needful, so as both to obey the Commander and to bear arms on behalf of the fatherland.
11:132⧉ ⤴︎
Having therefore charged us with such great things, and having reminded us of weapons and battle and wars, see how again he emboldens the soldier and anoints his eagerness, saying:
11:133⧉ ⤴︎
'For sin shall no longer have dominion over you;
11:134⧉ ⤴︎
for you are not under law, but under grace.'
11:135⧉ ⤴︎
If, then, sin no longer has dominion over us, for what reason do you give so many charges, saying:
11:136⧉ ⤴︎
「不要容罪在你們必死的身上作王」;
'Let not sin reign in your mortal body';
11:137⧉ ⤴︎
and, 'Neither present your members as weapons of unrighteousness unto sin'? What, then, is meant by this? He casts down here a certain seminal word, which he intends afterward to unfold and to work out with much elaboration.
11:138⧉ ⤴︎
What, then, is this word? Before the coming of Christ our body was easily mastered by sin.
11:139⧉ ⤴︎
因為在死之後,又有一大群情慾湧入其中;
For after death a great swarm of passions also came in upon it;
11:140⧉ ⤴︎
wherefore it was not at all nimble for the race in behalf of virtue.
11:141⧉ ⤴︎
因為那時既沒有聖靈同在施助,也沒有能治死罪的洗禮;反倒像一匹難以駕馭的烈馬,雖然奔跑,卻屢屢偏離正路,因為律法雖宣告當行與不當行之事,卻除了藉言語勸勉那爭戰的人以外,別無所助;
For neither was the Spirit present to help, nor baptism able to mortify; but like some hard-mouthed horse, it ran indeed, yet often went astray, since the law told out what things ought to be done and what ought not, but contributed nothing more than exhortation by words to those who contended;
11:142⧉ ⤴︎
but since Christ has come, the wrestlings have thereafter become easier.
11:143⧉ ⤴︎
Wherefore also greater arenas have been set before us, inasmuch as we have partaken of greater help.
11:144⧉ ⤴︎
Wherefore Christ also said:

'Unless your righteousness abound more than that of the Scribes and Pharisees, you shall in no wise enter into the kingdom of heaven.'
11:146⧉ ⤴︎
But this he says more plainly in what follows; for the present he hints at it briefly here, showing that unless we humble ourselves greatly, sin will not be overcome by us.
11:147⧉ ⤴︎
For it is not a law that merely commands, but grace also — grace that both remits the former things and secures us against those to come.
11:148⧉ ⤴︎
For the one promised the crowns after the toils, but the other crowned us first, and then drew us into the contests.
11:149⧉ ⤴︎
但依我看,他在此所暗示的甚至不是信徒的一生,而是將洗禮與律法作一比較;
But to me it seems that he here hints not even at the whole life of the believer, but makes a comparison of baptism and the law;
11:150⧉ ⤴︎
which very thing he says elsewhere also, that 'The letter kills, but the spirit gives life.'
11:151⧉ ⤴︎
For the law convicts of the transgression, but grace looses the transgression.
11:152⧉ ⤴︎
如此,正如前者藉著定罪而使罪成立,後者也藉著赦免而不容人在罪之下;
As, then, the former by convicting establishes sin, so the latter by pardoning does not suffer one to be under sin;
11:153⧉ ⤴︎
so that you are freed from this tyranny in a twofold manner: both by not being under law, and by having enjoyed grace.

Since, therefore, by these things he has caused the hearer to take breath, he again secures him, introducing an exhortation by way of contrast, and saying thus:
11:155⧉ ⤴︎

'What then? Shall we sin, because we are not under law, but under grace? God forbid.'
11:156⧉ ⤴︎
因為他首先用禁止之辭,因為所說的這事實在荒謬至極;
For first he uses the prohibition, because the thing spoken of is exceedingly absurd;
11:157⧉ ⤴︎
then he leads the discourse on to exhortation as well, and shows that great is the ease of the contests, speaking thus:

For if before baptism it wrought bodily death, and the wound needed so great a healing that the Master of all had to descend into death and thus loose the evil, then after so great a gift and freedom, if it takes you willingly submitting yourself to it again, what will it not work? Do not, then, run into so deep a pit, nor willingly betray yourself.

For in wars soldiers are often given up even against their will;

他既已從甚麼是合宜的立場使他們知恥,便又從賞罰的立場使他們生畏,並列出這兩者的酬報:義與死;
Having therefore shamed them from the standpoint of what is fitting, he strikes fear from the standpoint of the rewards as well, and sets down the wages of both, righteousness and death;
11:164⧉ ⤴︎

For if Christ dies no more, who shall loose that death? No one.
11:166⧉ ⤴︎
因此,就必然要一直受懲治、受刑罰;
It is necessary, therefore, to be chastised and punished throughout;
11:167⧉ ⤴︎
因為那時不再有可感知的死臨到,像此世這樣,使身體得安息、並將它與靈魂分開;
for no longer does a perceptible death come, as here, giving rest to the body and separating it from the soul;
11:168⧉ ⤴︎
'For the last enemy that is destroyed is death.'

Whence the punishment shall be immortal — yet not for those who obey God; but for these, righteousness and the good things that spring from it shall be the rewards. 'But thanks be to God, that though you were slaves of sin, you obeyed from the heart that form of teaching to which you were delivered.'

Having shamed them from their slavery, having frightened and exhorted them from the rewards, he again raises them up by the remembrance of the benefits.
11:171⧉ ⤴︎
For by these words he shows both that they have been delivered from great evils, and that this came not from their own labors, and that the things to come are easier.

正如有人從殘暴的暴君手中救出俘虜,並勸他不要再跑回去,便提醒他那暴君可怕的專橫;
For just as one who has rescued a captive from a cruel tyrant, and, urging him not to run back to him, reminds him of that tyrant's grievous despotism;

so also Paul most vividly points out the past evils through the giving of thanks to God.
11:174⧉ ⤴︎
For it was not, he says, a matter of human strength to deliver us from all those things, but thanks be to God, who both willed and was able to accomplish so great things.
11:175⧉ ⤴︎
他說得好:「你們從心裡順服了」;
And he said well: 'You obeyed from the heart';
11:176⧉ ⤴︎
for you were neither compelled nor forced, but of your own accord and with eagerness you departed.
11:177⧉ ⤴︎
And this belongs at once to one who praises and to one who lays hold of them with reproof.
11:178⧉ ⤴︎
For you who came of your own accord, and endured no compulsion, what pardon could you have, what defense, if you run back to your former ways? Then, that you might learn that the whole thing came about not only through their own right disposition but also through the grace of God, having said, 'You obeyed from the heart,' he added, 'unto that form of teaching to which you were delivered.'
11:179⧉ ⤴︎
For the obedience that comes from the heart makes plain their free will, while the being delivered hints at the help of God.
11:180⧉ ⤴︎
And what is the form of the teaching? To live uprightly and with the best conduct.
11:181⧉ ⤴︎
'And having been set free from sin, you became slaves to righteousness.'
11:182⧉ ⤴︎
Here he shows two gifts of God: to set free from sin, and to enslave to righteousness, which is better than any freedom.
11:183⧉ ⤴︎
因為神所行的,正如有人收養一個被蠻族擄到他們地方去的孤兒,不僅救他脫離擄掠,還親自作他慈愛看顧的父親,並把他提拔到最高的尊位;
For God has done the very same as if one, having taken an orphan child carried off by barbarians into their own land, should not only deliver him from captivity, but also set himself over him as a caring father, and raise him to the highest dignity;

which indeed has happened in our case also.
11:185⧉ ⤴︎
For he not only set us free from the old evils, but also brought us into an angelic life, and cut out for us a road of the best conduct, delivering us over to the security of righteousness, and putting to death the old evils, and mortifying the old man, and leading us by the hand to the immortal life.

Let us therefore remain living this life;

一種是身體的死,按此,亞伯拉罕雖然死了,卻不算是死的;
and one is that of the body, according to which Abraham, though dead, was not dead;
11:190⧉ ⤴︎

another again is that which has become the cause of this very one, the death that takes place at baptism;
11:197⧉ ⤴︎
for 'our old man,' it says, 'has been crucified,' that is, has been put to death.
11:198⧉ ⤴︎
既然知道這些事,就讓我們逃避那種死——按那種死,我們雖活著卻是死的;
Knowing these things, then, let us flee that deadness according to which, even while living, we die;
11:199⧉ ⤴︎

Therefore, fleeing this one, let us choose that deadness which is called blessed and admired, so that of the other two we may flee the one and fear the other.
11:208⧉ ⤴︎
For it is of no profit to us to behold the sun, and to eat and drink, unless the life that comes through good works be present.
11:209⧉ ⤴︎
請告訴我,一位君王身披紫袍、手持兵器,卻沒有一個臣民,反倒任憑一切想欺凌他、侮辱他的人肆意妄為,這對他有甚麼益處呢?照樣,一個基督徒縱有信心和洗禮所賜的恩,卻仍臣服於一切私慾之下,也必毫無所得;
For what profit is there, tell me, in a king who is clothed in purple and bears arms, but possesses no subject, and is exposed to all who wish to leap upon him and insult him? So too there will be no gain to a Christian who has faith and the gift that comes from baptism, but is subject to all the passions;
11:210⧉ ⤴︎
for thus the insult will be greater, and the shame more abundant.
11:211⧉ ⤴︎
正如那頭戴冠冕、身披紫袍的人,不僅不能從這華服得著自身的尊榮,反倒因自己的醜行使那華服蒙羞;
For just as that man who is clothed with the diadem and the purple will not only gain nothing from this robe toward his own honor, but even dishonors it through his own disgrace;
11:212⧉ ⤴︎
so too the believer who lives a corrupt life will not only gain no reverence thereby, but will even become the more ridiculous.
11:213⧉ ⤴︎
因為經上說:「凡沒有律法犯了罪的,也必不按律法滅亡;
'For as many,' it says, 'as have sinned without law, shall also perish without law;
11:214⧉ ⤴︎
and as many as have sinned in the law, shall be judged by the law.'
11:215⧉ ⤴︎
And writing to the Hebrews, he said:
11:216⧉ ⤴︎
「人干犯摩西的律法,憑兩三個見證人,尚且不得憐恤而死;
'A man who has set at nought the law of Moses dies without mercies on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
11:217⧉ ⤴︎
何況那踐踏神兒子的人,你們想,他該受多麼更重的刑罰呢?」這是極其合理的;
Of how much worse punishment, do you think, shall he be counted worthy who has trampled underfoot the Son of God?' And very reasonably;
11:218⧉ ⤴︎
for I subjected all the passions to you, he says, through baptism.
11:219⧉ ⤴︎
那麼發生了甚麼事,以致你竟這樣糟蹋如此的恩賜,變成了另一個人,全不像從前的你?我像對付蛆蟲一般,已把你從前的過犯殺死並埋葬了;
What then has happened, that you have so outraged such a gift, and have become another instead of the one you were? I slew and buried your former transgressions, like worms;
11:220⧉ ⤴︎
你為何又生出別的來呢?因為罪惡比蛆蟲更壞;
why then have you begotten others? For sins are worse than worms;
11:221⧉ ⤴︎
for these injure the body, but those the soul, and make the stench greater.
11:222⧉ ⤴︎
然而我們卻毫無知覺;
But we do not perceive it;
11:223⧉ ⤴︎
and for this very reason we do not even hasten to cleanse it away.
11:224⧉ ⤴︎
For neither does the drunkard know how great is the loathsomeness of putrid wine, but he who is not drunk knows these things exactly.
11:225⧉ ⤴︎
在罪惡的事上也是如此:清醒度日的人確切知道那些罪惡的污泥與玷污;
So too in the case of sins: he who lives soberly knows with precision the mire of those sins and their stain;
11:226⧉ ⤴︎
but he who has given himself over to wickedness, as though stupefied by some drunkenness, does not even know this very thing, that he is diseased.
11:227⧉ ⤴︎
而惡最可怕之處,正在於它連讓那陷入其中的人看見自己敗壞之大都不容許,反倒使他們臥在污泥中,還以為自己在享受香膏;
And this is the most grievous thing of all about vice, that it does not even allow those who have fallen into it to see the greatness of their own ruin, but, lying in the mire, they think they are enjoying perfumes;
11:228⧉ ⤴︎
and for this reason they cannot even be delivered, but full of worms, as though adorned with precious stones, so do they pride themselves.
11:229⧉ ⤴︎
For this reason they are not even willing to slay them, but even nourish and increase them within themselves, until they hand themselves over to the worms of the age to come.
11:230⧉ ⤴︎
因為這些今世的蛆蟲乃是那些來世蛆蟲的引路者;
For these are the procurers of those;
11:231⧉ ⤴︎
and not procurers only, but they are also fathers of those which never come to an end.
11:232⧉ ⤴︎
'For their worm,' it says, 'shall not die.'
11:233⧉ ⤴︎
These kindle the hell that is never quenched.
11:234⧉ ⤴︎
所以,為叫這些事不臨到我們,就讓我們除去諸惡的泉源,撲滅那火爐,並從底下拔出邪惡的根;
That these things, then, may not happen, let us take away the fountain of evils, and quench the furnace, and pull up from below the root of wickedness;
11:235⧉ ⤴︎
since even if you cut off a wicked tree from above, you have accomplished nothing more, so long as the root remains below and puts forth the same shoots.
11:236⧉ ⤴︎
What then is the root of evils? Learn it from the good husbandman, who knows such matters exactly, and tends the spiritual vine, and cultivates the whole inhabited world.
11:237⧉ ⤴︎
What then does he say is the cause of all evils? The desire for money.
11:238⧉ ⤴︎
'For the love of money,' he says, 'is the root of all evils.'
11:239⧉ ⤴︎
由此而生爭鬥、仇恨與戰爭,由此而生爭競、辱罵、猜疑與凌辱,由此而生兇殺、偷盜與盜墓;
From this come fights and enmities and wars, from this contentions and revilings and suspicions and insults, from this murders and thefts and grave-robbings;
11:240⧉ ⤴︎
because of this, not only cities and countries, but also roads, and the inhabited world and the uninhabited, and mountains, and glens, and hills, and all things simply, are full of blood and slaughters.
11:241⧉ ⤴︎
Nor did this evil hold back even from the sea, but there too it burst in with great frenzy, as pirates besiege it on every side and devise some new mode of brigandage.
11:242⧉ ⤴︎
For the sake of this, the laws of nature have been overturned, the ordinances of kinship have been shaken, and the very rights of being have been corrupted.
11:243⧉ ⤴︎
因為財富的暴政不僅武裝這樣的手去對付活人,甚至也對付死人;
For the tyranny of riches has armed such right hands not only against the living, but even against the dead;
11:244⧉ ⤴︎
and not even with death do they make peace toward them, but they break open tombs and stretch out their defiled hands against dead bodies, not even allowing him who has departed from life to be freed from their plotting.
11:245⧉ ⤴︎
And whatever evils you may find—whether in a household, or in the marketplace, or in the courts, or in the councils, or in the palaces, or anywhere at all—you will see them all springing up from this source.
11:246⧉ ⤴︎
For this it is, this is the evil that has filled all things with bloodshed and slaughter; this it is that has kindled the flame of Gehenna; this it is that has made the cities to be in no better state than the wilderness—nay, in a far worse one.
11:247⧉ ⤴︎
那些在路上埋伏的人容易提防,因為他們並非時時都攻擊;
For those who lie in wait along the roads it is easy to guard against, seeing that they do not attack at all times;
11:248⧉ ⤴︎
but those who imitate them in the midst of the cities are so much worse than they, in as much as they are harder to guard against, and dare to do openly what the others do in secret.
11:249⧉ ⤴︎
For the very laws that are established for the destruction of their wickedness—these too they drag over to be their allies, and so have filled the cities with such murders and pollutions.
11:250⧉ ⤴︎
Or is it not murder, tell me, and worse than murder, to hand the poor man over to famine, and to cast him into prison, and along with the famine to give him over to tortures and countless outrages? For even if you yourself do not do these things, yet if you supply the cause of their happening, you work them more than those who carry them out.
11:251⧉ ⤴︎
因為那殺人者一刀刺入,使受害者只痛苦片刻,便不再把折磨延續下去;
For the murderer thrusts in the sword at once, and having grieved his victim but a short time, carries the torment no further;
