1:5446
For the prophets, humbling themselves, said in prayer:
1:5447
And you, O Lord God of Israel, attend to visiting all the nations.
1:5448
Let this be written for another generation.
1:5449
The prayer contained in this psalm, and the promise concerning the nations that is here prophesied, has been given to the Jews as though inscribed upon a stone pillar, to be kept for the new Israel and for the generation that is according to Christ.
1:5450
And the people that is being created shall praise the Lord.
1:5451
For he has looked down from his holy height.
1:5452
He sets before us the cause of the calling of the nations.
1:5453
And this is the appearing of our Savior Christ, which he brought about by bowing the heavens.
1:5454
And who are the fettered, but those whom the demon who hates what is good has bound tight with the chains of sin? 'To loose the sons of those condemned to death.'
1:5455
The sons of those condemned to death would be those from the nations, inasmuch as their fathers died in their own sins, still worshiping idols.
1:5456
That his name might be declared in Zion.
1:5457
And he says this is the cause of the descent, that the Church might learn to hymn his name.
1:5458
When the peoples are gathered together as one.
1:5459
The prophets, having seen through the Spirit the gathering of the nations to the Lord, themselves also entreated to be deemed worthy of this blessed sight and of the outcome of these things.
1:5460
He answered him in the way of his strength.
1:5461
The prophetic choir is the one who responds — or rather, questions God.
1:5462
He calls his coming upon earth 'the way of his strength.'
1:5463
For he came that he might bind the strong man.
1:5464
Declare to me the fewness of my days.
1:5465
'Declare to me,' he says, 'what sort of thing our life is.'
1:5466
For he was praying to see whether his life would reach as far as those days in which the Only-Begotten, having become man, was to appear upon earth.
1:5467
Take me not up in the midst of my days.
1:5468
By 'half of his days,' that is, of his life, he means the portion spent thus far in looking toward the manifestation.
1:5469
因此,他祈願自己整個的時期得以滿全;
He was praying, then, that his whole span of time might be fulfilled;
1:5470
and, if it were possible, that his life might be extended, so that he might also be counted worthy of the very outcome of these events.
1:5471
For thus his whole life would have been brought to fulfillment.
1:5472
Your years are unto generation of generations.
1:5473
The prophetic choir, knowing through the Spirit that it would not live to reach the consummation of these events, says:
1:5474
至於我,既是必死的,我必要安睡;
But I shall fall asleep, since I am mortal;
1:5475
They shall perish, but you remain.
1:5476
But the heavens, even though they are a great and extraordinary creature, will nevertheless also be subjected to corruption.
1:5477
然而,這朽壞對它們而言,將要成為一種更新;
But this corruption will become for them a renewal;
1:5478
for they will be rolled up, being changed into a better form.
1:5479
The sons of your servants shall dwell securely.
1:5480
因為當諸天被捲起、新的受造之物形成之時,那時,惟獨那時,你眾僕人的子孫便進入了永恆的帳幕;
For when the heavens are rolled up and a new creation comes to be, then indeed — then — the sons of your servants, coming to be in the eternal tabernacles;
1:5481
and these would be those who have come to believe through his holy apostles.
1:5482
And their seed shall be established forever.
1:5483
The seed of the holy apostles is the evangelical and saving proclamation, which abides forever.
1:5484
The new people from the Gentiles is taught by this to sing hymns to God, who has wrought such great benefits.
1:5485
These benefits are the abolition of sin and the boast of the resurrection.
1:5486
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
1:5487
He rouses himself to the hymn, putting forward the blessing of God as a good remedy for his own salvation.
1:5488
至於神即將憐憫百姓的種種作為,他藉著施行審判的公義而得榮耀,既使人脫離朽壞,又賜下天國;
For the things in which God was about to show mercy to the people, he is glorified by a judging righteousness, both freeing them from corruption and granting the kingdom of heaven;
1:5489
so that this hymn now set before us fits all alike.
1:5490
And all that is within me, bless his holy name.
1:5491
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
1:5492
He lingers over his own exhortation to the hymn, knowing that he owes this in return for God's great benefits.
1:5493
For the one who is mindful of the divine benefits will not cease singing this hymn.
1:5494
And forget not all his recompenses.
1:5495
For he repaid us, in place of the great sins which we had committed, with goodness, mercy, and compassion.
1:5496
Who is gracious toward all your iniquities.
1:5497
These are God's recompenses concerning us:
1:5498
首先,他為我們的罪設立了挽回祭;
that first he established a propitiation for our sins;
1:5499
其次,他醫治了我們的軟弱;
and second, he healed our infirmities;
1:5500
第四,他運用自己的仁愛、憐憫與慈悲,將兒子名分的恩典加冕於我們;
fourth, employing his own loving-kindness and mercy and compassion, he crowned us with the grace of adoption as sons;
1:5501
fifth, he filled us with spiritual good things, giving himself to us as the bread of life.
1:5502
Your youth shall be renewed like the eagle's.
1:5503
God renewing our youth like the eagle's, through regeneration.
1:5504
This signifies to us the grace of the resurrection.
1:5505
He likened those being renewed to the eagle, which is the highest-flying and most kingly of all birds, and alone able to gaze steadily and brightly upon the rays of the sun.
1:5506
The Lord executes mercies and judgment for all who are wronged.
1:5507
This Lord, he says, who by his mercy has granted us the aforesaid things, is the very same one who of old judged a righteous judgment, and redeemed the sons of Israel out of Egypt, and gave to Moses and to all the people knowledge of his commandments.
1:5508
The Lord is compassionate and merciful.
1:5509
For these very things have been the cause of such benefaction both of old and now, as Moses also said:
1:5510
主是不輕易發怒,且有豐盛的慈愛與信實;
The Lord is longsuffering, and abundant in mercy, and true;
1:5511
These, then, are his powers which he made known to Moses, called 'ways,' and the virtues by which he governs all things.
1:5512
He will not be angry to the end.
1:5513
他說,儘管他曾因亞當裡的過犯而發怒,判定人類受死;
Even though, he says, he was angered on account of the transgression in Adam, and condemned the race to death;
1:5514
但他並不將這怒氣延續到底;
yet he does not extend his wrath to the end;
1:5515
for he shone forth in the last times, unto the abolishing of corruption.
1:5516
For he himself knows our frame.
1:5517
For he had compassion on us as his own creation and the works of his hands.
1:5518
But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting.
1:5519
And showing mercy unto thousands to those who fear me.
1:5520
And his righteousness is upon the children's children of those who keep his covenant.
1:5521
For being holy, he rests among the holy — evidently, that is, among the angelic powers.
1:5522
The Lord has prepared his throne in heaven.
1:5523
他說,他安息在上面的眾靈之上;
He rests, he says, upon the spirits above;
1:5524
and yet he stands apart from his own kingdom.
1:5525
For he himself is the one who exercises dominion over all things, as God.
1:5526
And his kingdom has dominion over all things.
1:5527
And the Lord holds sway also over the worthy.
1:5528
Bless the Lord, all you his angels.
1:5529
因為,若這正是他們的職事——即讚美、榮耀神;
For if this is their service — to praise and glorify God;
1:5530
then the soul too is commanded to do this very thing — the Psalmist indeed always bidding it also to give glory — evidently so that it might attain the same dignity.
1:5531
For those whose pursuit is the same also have the same dignity.
1:5532
Bless the Lord, all you his hosts.
1:5533
Not only are angels called to the praise, but also whatever other heavenly order there is, whether thrones, or principalities, or powers, or dominions.
1:5534
And all these orders he signified to us through the term 'hosts.'
1:5535
It is untitled among the Hebrews.
1:5536
That he exercises providence not only over the heavenly and aerial things, but also over the earthly things, even the smallest among them;
1:5537
so that he does not neglect even the most lowly of animals, but provides for these as well.
1:5538
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
1:5539
O Lord my God, you are magnified exceedingly.
1:5540
He clothes him with praise together with doxology, as with some garment.
1:5541
Wrapping yourself with light as with a garment.
1:5542
From the light conceived in the mind he begins to weave the hymn for him.
1:5543
And just as it is said elsewhere that he dwells in unapproachable light, here this same light is said to be worn as a garment.
1:5544
Stretching out heaven like a skin.
1:5545
At once he set forth both the shape and the ease with which the Creator worked.
1:5546
For just as it is easy for a man to stretch out a skin, so also it was for God to make heaven, which did not exist.
1:5547
At the same time he also hinted at another lofty thought: that we are journeying toward another life, and present things are a shadow of things to come, and we have not yet arrived at the inner sanctuary, but are still in a tent in the present life.
1:5548
Thus, when heaven is changed, there will be another manner of life, and a portion better than the present one.
1:5549
For there will be a new heaven and a new earth.
1:5550
讓我們且聽眾先知論到諸天所說的話,好堵住那些以鬍鬚自誇之人的口;
But let us hear what things the prophets say concerning heaven, so that we may stop the mouths of those who pride themselves greatly on their beard;
1:5551
他們隨口胡言,甚至說天在地底下;
who, uttering whatever comes to them, even say that heaven is beneath the earth;
1:5552
against whom the prophet, standing firm, said:
1:5553
Stretching out heaven like a skin.
1:5554
這『獸皮』並非如他們荒謬之言所說的是個球體;
The 'skin' is not some sphere, according to their nonsense;
1:5555
but if it resembles anything, it resembles something round and hemispherical.
1:5556
Which, then, another prophet made clear when he said:
1:5557
He who set up heaven like a vault, and stretched it out like a tent for those who dwell upon the earth.
1:5558
又說:它並不旋轉不定;
And again, that it is not made to whirl about;
1:5559
thus says the prophet, He who fixed the heaven fast.
1:5560
And also setting forth its extreme fineness, he said, Heaven was made firm like smoke.
1:5561
他以水鋪蓋他的樓閣為頂;
He who roofs his upper chambers with waters;
1:5562
這表明水的聚集在空中運行,並非漫無目的;
he shows that the masses of water are not carried about in the air at random;
1:5563
but that it has itself been roofed by the harmonious arrangement of the clouds concerning these things — 'He who makes the clouds his mounting-place.'
1:5564
He who extends the works of his providence even as far as their clouds.
1:5565
For he has put 'mounting-place' in place of 'providence.'
1:5566
He who walks upon the wings of the winds.
1:5567
but he himself becomes, as it were, their charioteer, by mounting upon their wings.
1:5568
He who makes his angels spirits.
1:5569
He makes, he says, the angels light and aloft.
1:5570
And his ministers a flaming fire.
1:5571
Thus Moses saw the angel speaking to him in a flame of fire.
1:5572
He who founded the earth upon its stability.
1:5573
After showing the Creator's providence in heaven, he proceeds also to speak of his providence over the things on earth.
1:5574
This very thing: that though it is solid and heavy, it has been set upon a moist substance.
1:5575
The deep is his covering, as a garment.
1:5576
He speaks here of the element of earth itself.
1:5577
And he says that, as with a garment, he wrapped the earth with the deep, encircling it entirely on the outside with water.
1:5578
Waters will stand upon the mountains, and so forth.
1:5579
他說,淵水如山一般湧起、升高,彷彿要威脅淹沒大地;
'Like mountains,' he says, the waters of the deep rise up, lifted high, and as it were threatening to flood the earth;
1:5580
他說,但因你的一聲示意、你的能力(這能力也藉雷聲顯明),水就退去;
'but at your nod, and by your power, which is also signified through the thunder, they withdraw,' he says;
1:5581
or perhaps he says that the thunders too came to be for this reason, so that the waters of the deep might take a certain fear from what happens.
1:5582
But if those waters endure this, much more must we undergo the like.
1:5583
Mountains rise up, and plains sink down.
1:5584
他說,水被高舉時,可比作群山;
'The waters, when lifted high,' he says, 'might well be likened to mountains;'
1:5585
but when spread out flat again by fear of you, the ground becomes, as it were, level and even.
1:5586
For you have established for them a place which they cannot pass beyond.
1:5587
You have set a boundary which they will not pass.
1:5588
Similar is what was said to the sea through the prophet:
1:5589
你只可到這裡,不可越過;
Thus far you shall come, and no farther;
1:5590
but within yourself your waves shall be broken.
1:5591
Waters will pass between the mountains.
1:5592
for having made them, he also nourishes and gives them drink.
1:5593
They will give drink to all the wild beasts of the field.
1:5594
Thus he also cares for irrational animals, creeping things, and beasts, supplying to these as well what is useful for life.
1:5595
Wild asses will look for it in their thirst.
1:5596
And this too is a work of your providence: that waters are given not only at the seasons of the torrents, in the ravines and in the sun-scorched places, but also amid the mountains, so that the tame animals may escape the wild ones and find rest in due season.
1:5597
Watering the mountains from his upper chambers.
1:5598
For he waters mountains and plains not from the springs in the ravines, nor from the rivers flowing over the earth, but by supplying sufficient rains from above.
1:5599
Ἀπὸ καρ.
From the fruit of your works the earth will be satisfied.
1:5600
Just as he gave the supply of waters, so also he provided that the earth should nourish.
1:5601
He who makes grass spring up for the cattle, and green plants for the service of men.
1:5602
To bring forth bread from the earth.
1:5603
For all those things benefit us for our own sake.
1:5604
The trees of the plain shall be satisfied.
1:5605
These things have come to be for very many other purposes as well, of which we too have experience — and also for the sparrows, for their nests.
1:5606
The dwelling of the heron takes the lead among them.
1:5607
He says that the nest of the heron takes the lead among the sparrows themselves, because, occupying the tallest of the trees, it nests for the most part among the firs, which are the tallest of all trees. 'The high mountains are for the deer.'
1:5608
And to the deer, he says, He has given the mountains as a refuge, so that they may escape the more savage beasts.
1:5609
The rock is a refuge for the hares.
1:5610
Just as He gave the mountains for the safety of the deer, so too He gave the clefts of the rocks for the hares.
1:5611
From the midst of the rocks they will give forth their voices.
1:5612
Clearly, praising the One who saves.
1:5613
He made the moon for seasons.
1:5614
He returns again to the providence exercised in the heavens.
1:5615
The sun knew its setting.
1:5616
It too, obeying a divine command.
1:5617
You appointed darkness, and it became night.
1:5618
He says this so that we might not suppose that the maker of the day is one, and the maker of the night another.
1:5619
Man shall go forth to his work.
1:5620
Men were prevented from going out upon the roads and from the cultivation of the earth.
1:5621
但如今牠卻在夜間出來,向神尋求食物;
But now it goes forth by night, seeking food from God;
1:5622
since the earth did not, for their sake as well, cause grass or green plants to spring up.
1:5623
How greatly magnified are Your works, O Lord!
1:5624
Having gone through his discourse concerning providence, he turned the discourse into a hymn to the Creator, thereby giving the hearing, as it were, a rest through this.
1:5625
接著他又轉到護理的另一方面,向我們宣告在水中的航行;
Then again he comes to another part of providence, declaring to us the passage through the waters;
1:5626
which could never have come to be, had not God's providence steered it therein.
1:5627
「主憑智慧造了這一切」,這確實是一句驚嘆之詞;
It is indeed an exclamation of wonder: 'in wisdom the Lord has made them all';
1:5628
for Christ is the power of God and the wisdom of God.
1:5629
他在論及海洋的話語之中,穿插了對那條大魚(龍)的提述;
He has inserted, into the discourse concerning the sea, the mention that was made of the dragon;
1:5630
saying that it was brought forth for no other purpose than to be sported with.
1:5631
他在論及海洋的話語中提到這一點,實在恰如其分;
And fittingly he made mention of this in the discourse concerning the sea;
1:5632
inasmuch as our whole life too is a kind of salty sea, buffeted from every side and convulsed by wild waves.
1:5633
All things wait upon You.
1:5634
For whether men, or herds of wild beasts, or cattle, or reptiles, none of them could be nourished in any other way, unless He supplied the necessities of life.
1:5635
You will take away their breath, and they shall perish.
1:5636
The Lord shall rejoice in His works.
1:5637
he wrought this, having renewed our nature.
1:5638
For by these words he signifies the knowledge of God that is to come upon men, when God will rejoice — not at being worshiped, but at seeing them being saved.
1:5639
He who looks upon the earth, and makes it tremble.
1:5640
He appends the universal judgment, which will also bring fear upon all who are on the earth.
1:5641
For there is no one who does not dread that dreadful and divine tribunal.
1:5642
He touches the mountains, and they smoke.
1:5643
By 'mountains' he means the opposing powers, which He will also set ablaze at the time of judgment, of which the smoke is a symbol.
1:5644
May my meditation be sweet to Him.
1:5645
He speaks of what he has chosen: to desire only to praise God — which will indeed please the very One who is praised.
1:5646
Let sinners vanish from the earth.
1:5647
Clearly, at that time.
1:5648
'Depart from Me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.'
1:5649
and let the lawless be, so that they exist no more.
1:5650
Clearly, they shall vanish from the portion of those who bless God.
1:5651
Bless the Lord, O my soul.
1:5652
For He Himself will remove it from the lot of the wicked, and will cause it to be counted worthy of that of the saints.
1:5653
Now 'Hallelujah' is praise offered to the Invisible One.
1:5654
It is said that the angels praise God with this very word, just as the cherubim [cry out]:
1:5655
And this the holy fathers have handed down, having themselves heard it, just as Isaiah heard it from the seraphim.
1:5656
Give thanks to the Lord, and call upon His name; declare His works among the nations.
1:5657
In this psalm the Holy Spirit commands the holy apostles to make manifest to the people from the nations all the wonders which the Lord worked at His coming.
1:5658
Glory in His holy name.
1:5659
For praise and glory belong to those who recount the excellence of God.
1:5660
Let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice.
1:5661
He teaches how great a benefit arises from giving thanks.
1:5662
For if you seek Him, he says, there will come upon you both the gladness of mind, and the strengthening and glorifying of our head.
1:5663
Remember His marvelous works which He has done.
1:5664
For these also worked many wonders through the Son of God.
1:5665
He commands their heralds to hand these things down to the nations, since they are ignorant of them, in addition to what was accomplished by the Savior in the New Testament — that is, whatever His mouth has decreed through both the Old and the New.
1:5666
As if to say: command them to keep the royal laws.
1:5667
His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth.
1:5668
所謂「奇事」,是指那些已然發生的神蹟,如在海面上行走、叫死人復活等等;
By 'wonders' he means the miracles that took place, such as walking upon the sea, raising the dead, and the rest;
1:5669
所謂「祂口中的判語」,是指祂從人身上趕出污鬼時所說的話;
and by 'the judgments of His mouth,' the words which He spoke when driving the unclean demons out of men;
1:5670
O seed of Abraham, His servants; sons of Jacob, His chosen ones.
1:5671
Again, the word is addressed to the apostles, so that it means:
1:5672
As being the seed of Abraham and his servants, and being sons of Jacob and his chosen ones (for he himself chose them), 'declare among the nations that he is the Lord our God.'
1:5673
And they went about from nation to nation,
1:5674
From the nation of the Babylonians to that of the Palestinians.
1:5675
And he rebuked kings for their sake,
1:5676
Abimelech, concerning his outrage against Sarah.
1:5677
'Touch not my anointed ones.'
1:5678
Those about Abraham were also 'anointed ones,' because they had been deemed worthy of the appearing of the Word of God in visions.
1:5679
And he called a famine upon the land,
1:5680
He brought about the famine by [divine] dispensation, so that, through it going down into Egypt and being increased, they might in due course receive back the land of the promise.
1:5681
He broke every staff of bread,
1:5682
This is what usually happens in famines by God's wrath: that people, though eating, are not sustained.
1:5683
Until his word came,
1:5684
He speaks of the fulfillments of the dreams.
1:5685
weeping in his struggle for his life, until the appointed time of the dreams arrived for them to be fulfilled.
1:5686
To instruct his rulers according to his own will,
1:5687
Is not their interpretation from God? For he did not interpret the dreams for Pharaoh, unless God had granted him the ability to understand them.
1:5688
And Israel entered into Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.
1:5689
The sons of Noah were Shem, Ham, and Japheth:
1:5690
Of this one [Ham was descended] Mizraim, which is interpreted 'Egypt,' from whom also [comes the name of] the land.
1:5691
When, therefore, Jacob entered Egypt, it is likely that Ham, being the grandfather of Mizraim, had already settled in Egypt, while Canaan dwelt in Palestine.
1:5692
For 'Israel went down into Egypt with seventy souls,' says the Scripture.
1:5693
'And Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.'
1:5694
Ham begot Canaan, and Canaan begot Mizraim, who is interpreted 'Egypt.'
1:5695
And he increased his people greatly,
1:5696
So that Pharaoh, who did not know Joseph, said:
1:5697
'Behold, now this nation multiplies greatly and is stronger than we.'
1:5698
But they would not have grown and become strong, had they not obtained the protection of Joseph and the favorable reception of Pharaoh.
1:5699
And he turned his heart to hate his people,
1:5700
Since, from being honored by the Egyptians, they fell away into the same idolatry as theirs, for this reason he arranged that they should be hated and heavy labors laid upon them, so that, being afflicted, they might take refuge in God, and the promise made to Abraham might find opportunity to be fulfilled.
1:5701
'He sent Moses his servant,' etc.
1:5702
For to Moses and Aaron alone did he reveal by his word the [sign] of 'into blood,' and the other signs.
1:5703
He sent darkness, and it grew dark,
1:5704
Since the Egyptians, forsaking the Creator, worshiped the creation, for this reason he punished them by means of that very creation — I mean, by air, fire, earth, and water.
1:5705
He turned their waters into blood,
1:5706
因為他所改變的不僅是水的顏色,甚至連水的味道性質也一併改變了;
For he changed not only the color of the waters, but also the very quality of their taste;
1:5707
so that all the kinds of fish perished.
1:5708
In this psalm he enumerates the sins of the former people, teaching how their rejection also came to pass.
1:5709
First, they embittered him while crossing the Red Sea, saying:
1:5710
'Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that he brought us out here to perish?'
1:5711
第二,他們在曠野試探神;
second, they tempted God in the wilderness;
1:5712
第三,他們在營中激怒摩西;
third, they provoked Moses to anger in the camp;
1:5713
第四,他們在何烈山造了牛犢;
fourth, they made a calf at Horeb;
1:5714
第五,他們藐視了那可羨慕之地;
fifth, they despised the desirable land;
1:5715
第六,他們委身於巴力毘珥;
sixth, they were joined to Baal-peor;
1:5716
第七,他們在爭鬧之水(米利巴水)邊惹祂發怒;
seventh, they provoked him at the water of contention;
1:5717
eighth, by not destroying the nations which the Lord had told them [to destroy], but even worshiping their idols, so as even to bring their own children to them as a sacrifice.
1:5718
'Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.'
1:5719
'Blessed are those who keep judgment,' etc.
1:5720
For these alone are worthy to speak of the mighty acts of the Lord — those who do the things judged by God in the Scriptures, who accomplish all things with judgment and reason, and who always keep the judgment of God before their eyes.
1:5721
For these, accordingly, are also doers of righteousness, accomplishing what is just in deed.
1:5722
'Remember us, O Lord, in the favor shown to your people.'
1:5723
Here the person of the Jews is introduced, praying to share in the salvation given to the Gentiles.
1:5724
'Water covered those who afflicted them,'
1:5725
for the mixed multitude that went out with them did not belong to those who afflicted them, but to those who believed.
1:5726
'And they believed his word, and sang his praise.'
1:5727
'And they sang his praise' —
1:5728
[that is,] when the women who danced with Miriam went out, saying:
1:5729
'And they tempted God in the waterless place,'
1:5730
As for the phrase 'and they tempted God in the waterless place':
1:5731
for they provoked him to anger immediately after the Red Sea.
1:5732

'And they exchanged his glory for the likeness of a calf that eats grass,'
1:5733
'Had not Moses his chosen one stood in the breach,'
1:5734
'If indeed you will forgive them their sin, forgive it;'
1:5735
'but if not, blot me also out of this your book which you have written.' 'And they despised the desirable land.'
1:5736
This is the fifth accusation, following upon the Red Sea, the wilderness, the outrage against Moses, and the calf at Horeb.
1:5737
For when the spies returned, speaking evil of the land, they turned the rest of the people away as well, except Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh.
1:5738
'And they murmured in their tents,'
1:5739
when the spies came and perverted the resolve of the people.
1:5740
'And they were joined to Baal-peor.'
1:5741
This is an idol of the Ammonites, called by the Greeks Cronos.
1:5742
And Phinehas stood up and made atonement.
1:5743
When he killed the Midianite woman together with the man who had committed fornication.
1:5744
And they played the harlot in their own practices.
1:5745
The books of Judges and of Kingdoms teach these things: how they were handed over at different times to different peoples—Moabites, Ammonites, Amalekites, Midianites, and Philistines—being disciplined by that handing-over.
1:5746
And those who hated them ruled over them.
1:5747
The Babylonians and the Assyrians prevailed over the Israelites on account of their transgressions.
1:5748
But they provoked him with their own counsel.
1:5749
He was sweet to them out of his loving-kindness, but they compelled him to appear bitter toward themselves.
1:5750
And again he saved them, as only a Savior would.
1:5751
他們卻滅亡了,因為他們用滅亡的行為把自己刺穿;
but they perished, having impaled themselves upon deeds of destruction;
1:5752
until, doing this many times, they perished at last.
1:5753
And the word 'many times' is similar to:
1:5754
'How often I desired to gather your children together!' And likewise:
1:5755
'And they were humbled in their iniquities'—like the saying, 'But you were not willing.'
1:5756
因為祂雖然降下管教,卻又再次施予慈愛;
For while bringing chastisement upon them, he again imparted his loving-kindness;
1:5757
but they repaid him by treating him as an enemy.
1:5758
And he made them objects of compassion before all who had taken them captive.
1:5759
Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good.
1:5760
After the rejection of the Jewish people, he fittingly signifies the calling of the Gentiles, which came about through the apostles.
1:5761
From the east and the west, and from the north and the south.
1:5762
And who are those gathered from the four regions of the inhabited world, if not all the nations that had long been destitute of the fear of God, and had not partaken even of a drop of divine moisture, but were in great thirst? 'They found no way to a city of habitation.'
1:5763
For they had no good manner of life, but were in great error.
1:5764
Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them.
1:5765
因為他們沒有能堅固人心的糧食;
For they had no bread to strengthen a man's heart;
1:5766
nor the living water, concerning which it has been said:
1:5767
'Whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst forever.'
1:5768
And he guided them into a straight way.
1:5769
Namely, faith in himself.
1:5770
That they might go to a city of habitation.
1:5771
He means the Church, or the heavenly Jerusalem.
1:5772
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercies.
1:5773
And who is that soul, if not the soul of those concerning whom it has been said:
1:5774
'Hungry and thirsty, their soul fainted within them'? 'And he filled the hungry soul with good things.'
1:5775
That is, evidently, the spiritual bread.
1:5776
Sitting in darkness and the shadow of death.
1:5777
若稱「死蔭」為拜偶像之事,以及行在無神之中的種種行為,這樣說並不算錯;
You would not err in calling 'the shadow of death' idolatry and the deeds done in godlessness;
1:5778
因為正是這些事,使我們與真實的生命隔絕;
for these are the things that separate us from the true life;
1:5779
and we were formerly subject to these, because we provoked God and irritated the counsel of the Most High.
1:5780
We, like blind men, passing our life in darkness and the shadow of death, our soul's rational faculties fettered and maimed, exchanged the glory of the incorruptible God for the likeness of an image of corruptible man, and of birds and four-footed beasts.
1:5781
Bound in poverty and iron.
1:5782
Each man is bound tight by the cords of his own sins, being destitute of every good and noble thing.
1:5783
Because they rebelled against the words of God.
1:5784
In no way accepting the divine law, but attaching themselves beforehand to the wise men of this age.
1:5785
And they provoked the counsel of the Most High.
1:5786
And what was the counsel of the Most High, if not his will that all men be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth? 'They grew weak, and there was none to help.'
1:5787
For no one had the power to bring about the destruction of sin.
1:5788
And he saved them out of their distresses.
1:5789
For what greater distress is there than to be enslaved to evil spirits in ignorance of God, and in poverty of soul, and in the destitution of wickedness? 'And he broke their bonds asunder.'
1:5790
The word 'broke asunder' indicates the sudden and total abolition of sin.
1:5791
Let them give thanks to the Lord for his mercies.
1:5792
He has said the same things a second time concerning his benefactions.
1:5793
For he broke down the gates of bronze.
1:5794
This signifies the Savior's descent as far as Hades, which having accomplished, he threw open the gates of Hades, which had long been shut fast to all with unbreakable bonds.
1:5795
因為那些想要回返的人,並無退路;
For there was no way back for those who wished to return;
1:5796
but he himself said to those in bonds:
1:5797
'Come forth'; and to those who are in darkness, 'Reveal yourselves.'
1:5798
Their soul abhorred all food.
1:5799
For there was no word able to nourish them.
1:5800
And the gates of death are the sins that lead to death.
1:5801
And let them offer to him a sacrifice of praise.
1:5802
He transfers the discourse to the holy apostles:
1:5803
'He turned rivers into a wilderness.'
1:5804
He speaks of the once-flowing but reprobate race of the Jews.
1:5805
For those who were formerly wasting away with famine and lacking spiritual food, he settled in those very rivers.
1:5806
He means the synagogue of the Jews.
1:5807
因為鬼魔正是那屬地政體的居民;
For the demons were the inhabitants of that earthly commonwealth;
1:5808
and it was impiety that bore fruit in it.
1:5809
But the apostles dried it up with the salt of their teaching, concerning whom he says:
1:5810
'You are the salt of the earth.'
1:5811
He turned the wilderness into pools of water.
1:5812
這是指從外邦而來的百姓;
He signifies the people that comes from the nations;
1:5813
for the prophecy is mixed, bringing forward the persons of the two peoples:
1:5814
the rejection of the one, and the entrance of the other.
1:5815
And they established cities to dwell in.
1:5816
Evidently a good and heavenly commonwealth. And he sowed fields and planted vineyards.
1:5817
You will understand the fields from him who said:
