for this reason also the Scripture testifies:
1:451
"who committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth."
1:452
那麼你們何以說,那一度被擄的人不可能得以脫離擄掠呢?如此,你們豈不是把「不能」歸給神,而把「能」歸給魔鬼,說他的罪在人的本性中是不可摧毀的,正如其他異端者所言一樣;
How then do you say that it is impossible for the man who was once taken captive to become free from captivity?—so that you ascribe the impossible to God, and the possible to the devil, saying that his sin is indestructible in the nature of men, just as the other heretics also say;
1:453
and that for this reason the deity, which cannot be taken captive, came in the likeness of flesh and soul, in order that it might itself remain uncaptured, and thus be seen as pure righteousness.
1:454
When, then, was the righteousness of the deity ever not pure? And what benefit would there be for mankind in these things, unless the Lord had appeared in identity of existence and in newness of nature, as the Apostle says:
1:455
"which he inaugurated for us as a new and living way;"
1:456
"I am the way, and the life, and the truth"? But you say that those who believe are saved by likeness and by imitation, and not by renewal and by the firstfruits.
1:457
那麼,他又怎能在許多弟兄中成為長子,基督又怎能成為那些睡了之人的初熟果子——他豈不是教會身體的頭嗎?因為信心若顯而易見、明明可見,便不能稱之為信心;
And how then did he become the firstborn among many brothers, and Christ the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep, he who is the head of the body, the Church? For faith, when it plainly appears as manifest, could not even be called faith;
1:458
but faith is that which believes the impossible to be in power, the weak to be in strength, the passible to be in impassibility, the corruptible to be in incorruption, and the mortal to be in immortality.
1:459
『這是極大的奧祕』,正如使徒所說;
"This mystery is great," as the Apostle says;
1:460
"but I speak concerning Christ and the Church."
1:461
For the deity did not come to justify itself, for neither did it sin; but he became poor for our sake, though he was rich, that we through his poverty might become rich.
1:462
But how did God become poor? Because he took up in himself the nature that had become poor, putting it forward in his own righteousness as suffering on behalf of men, yet being above men, and manifested from among men, and having become wholly God's.
1:463
For if he had not become the firstborn among many brothers, how could he have appeared as the firstborn from the dead? How then do you say, "God who suffered and rose through the flesh"? Alas for such absurdity and blasphemy!
1:464
Such are the audacious deeds of the Arians.
1:465
因為他們毫無畏懼地提出這樣的褻瀆,他們所學的,不過是徒有其名地稱神的兒子為「神」;
For they put forward such blasphemy without fear, having learned to call the Son of God "God" only in a pretended sense;
1:466
although Scripture teaches that the suffering came about through God, in his flesh, and not that God suffered through the flesh.
1:467
那麼你們既預先承認同質性的信仰,又怎能把那不可分割的名號拖入受苦之中呢?你們把那不可分的本性、那不可言喻的神性、那不變不改的同質性拖入受苦之中,卻只在復活之後才承認它?因為倘若道是憑自己將肉身轉化而成,竟至於受苦的地步,而未曾在自己裡面領受任何能受苦或能復活之物,那麼受苦、並從死人中復活的,便是他自己了;
You, then, who profess beforehand the confession of consubstantiality—how do you drag the undivided name down into suffering? Dragging the indivisible nature, the ineffable deity, the unchangeable and unalterable consubstantiality down into suffering, and yet confessing it only from the resurrection onward? For if the Logos, having transformed flesh out of himself, proceeded even as far as suffering, without having assumed in himself anything capable of suffering or of resurrection, then he himself would be the one who suffered and rose from the dead;
1:468
and then the suffering would be common to the whole Trinity, as with Valentinus, since the Logos is undivided from the Father according to the divine nature.
1:469
But if you wish to understand these things in this way, what then is the point of the promise made through the prophets, or the genealogy set forth by the evangelists, or the testimony of the apostles, or the standing forth of his mother Mary, or the increase of his stature, or the display of his eating, or the demonstration of his compassion in all things, or the bestowal of his name, or the fact that the Son of God became the Son of man, or that Jesus Christ, a man, gave himself as a ransom for us? Or that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be killed, and on the third day rise from the dead? But if you do not believe that Christ is capable of suffering, since he is man—
1:470
反倒因窘迫而如此推想:若你們承認基督是神又是人,便不再是講論一位,而是講論兩位了;
but, being hard-pressed, you reckon that if you were to confess Christ as God and man, you would no longer be speaking of one, but of two;
1:471
you are then of necessity compelled either to say that the economy of the suffering, the death, and the resurrection was mere appearance, as Marcion and the other heretics say, or to call the deity of the Logos passible, as Arius and his followers do.
1:472
For if, in reading the divine Scriptures, you had understood how, in the Law and the Prophets, and in the Gospels and the Apostles, they everywhere first call the Lord "man," and only then introduce the suffering, so that they might never utter a blasphemous word against the deity—
1:473
為此,他們並未論及道之神性的受生,反倒承認父,並宣揚子;
for this reason they have not spoken of a begetting of the deity of the Logos, but confess the Father, and proclaim the Son;
1:474
"that our old man was crucified with him;"
1:475
神性從未曾在沒有受苦之身體的情況下承受苦難;
and nowhere does the deity admit of suffering apart from a suffering body;
1:476
也從未在沒有憂傷、煩擾之魂的情況下顯出憂傷與煩擾;
nor does it exhibit trouble and grief apart from a soul that grieves and is troubled;
1:477
也從未在沒有憂悶、禱告之心智的情況下顯出憂悶與禱告;
nor is it distressed and does it pray apart from a mind that is distressed and prays;
1:478
然而,即便這些所述之事並非出於本性上的缺陷所致,但這些發生的事,卻確實是藉著真實存有的彰顯而成就的;
but indeed, even if the things spoken did not come about through any defect of nature, yet the things that occurred were enacted through a manifestation of real existence;
1:479
how then have you written, "God who suffered and rose through the flesh"? For if it is God who suffered and rose through the flesh, you will have to say that the Father too is passible, and the Paraclete as well, since the name is one, and the divine nature is one.
1:480
從這句話便可看出你們的心思是何等模樣——正如那些既不敬畏神、也不信服聖經的人一般;
But from this statement one can perceive your understanding, of what sort it is—as of men who neither fear God nor are persuaded by the divine Scriptures;
1:481
while Moses indeed writes concerning God that "Our God is a consuming fire;"
1:482
但論到祂在肉身中的臨到,他卻說:主要從你們弟兄中間興起一位先知;又論到那懸掛在木頭上的生命,彷彿是主的身體,成為我們的生命;
but concerning his sojourn in the flesh, he says that the Lord will raise up a prophet from among your brothers, and speaks of life hanging upon a tree, as it were the body of the Lord, becoming life for us;
1:483
and Isaiah too cries out, speaking concerning God:
1:484
『那偉大、永恆的神,那造了地極的,必不飢餓,也不困乏』——等等;
"God, the great, the everlasting, who made the ends of the earth, will not hunger nor grow weary"—and so forth;
1:485
"a man stricken, and knowing how to bear infirmity."
1:486
And what is the meaning of "knowing how to bear infirmity"? That the capacity for suffering was displayed by the one who had truly suffered.
1:487
And the Apostle also says:
1:488
"The man Christ Jesus, who gave himself for us;"
1:489
but concerning his deity:
1:490
"For the Word of God is living and active, and sharper than any two-edged sword."
1:491
主也將受苦歸於人子,顯明關乎肉身的事;
And the Lord indeed fixes the suffering upon the Son of Man, showing what pertains to the flesh;
1:492
but concerning his divinity:
1:493
我與父原為一;
I and the Father are one;
1:494
and, No one knows the Son, who he is, except the Father alone.
1:495
Nowhere have the Scriptures handed down 'the blood of God' apart from flesh; rather, they speak of God suffering and rising through the flesh.
1:496
These are the audacities of the Arians, since they confess neither the Son of God to be true God...
1:497
But the holy Scriptures proclaim, in the flesh of God, and of God who became human in the flesh, the blood, and the suffering, and the resurrection of the body of God — a resurrection that took place from the dead.
1:498
你們卻反其道而言,彷彿比使徒更有智慧,比先知更通曉奧秘,比福音書作者更具權威,甚或比主更為權威;
But you say the opposite, as though wiser than the apostles, and more versed in mysteries than the prophets, and more authoritative than the evangelists, or even more authentic than the Lord;
1:499
你們以虛假的敬虔言辭否認真理,卻出言違逆神性;然而,救恩的安排在十字架上已清楚顯明——一面藉肉身流血得以確證;
with your falsified show of piety you deny the truth, while speaking against the divinity — though the economy is clearly displayed even upon the cross, confirmed on the one hand by the shedding of the blood of the flesh;
1:500
and confirmed, on the other hand, by the soul that came into being and was signified — this not indicating a separation of the divinity, but signifying the death of the body; the divinity neither being left behind from the body in the tomb, nor the soul being separated from it in Hades.
1:501
For this is what was spoken through the prophets:
1:502
You will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor will you allow your Holy One to see corruption.
1:503
沒有人奪去我的魂;
No one takes it from me;
1:504
卻是我自己捨去它;
but I lay it down of myself;
1:505
that is, being present, I demonstrate this.
1:506
and in the body of Christ corruption was abolished, and incorruption was shown forth from the tomb.
1:507
因此,人並未與神分離,神也未曾對人述說遺棄;死亡與靈的離去也並非神自身體的遷離,而是魂與身體的分離;
So then, the man was not separated from God, nor did God recount an abandonment toward the man; nor was the death and the departure of the spirit a removal of God from the body, but a separation of the soul from the body;
1:508
for it was our death that was there being traced out.
1:509
But if God was separated from the body, and death was thereby shown, how did the body, having been separated from the incorruptible God, exhibit incorruption? And how did the Logos make his entrance into Hades? Or how did he show forth the resurrection from Hades? Did he perhaps rise instead of our soul, so as to fit himself to the image of our resurrection? And how is it even possible to think such things concerning God? Your definition, therefore, is discordant with the holy Scriptures, and your opinion is ill-suited to the economy that has been fulfilled.
1:510
And the saying, 'Sit at my right hand,' expresses a dignity not of man, but of God.
1:511
But since the dignity of God became the dignity of man, so that the dignity of man might be believed to be the dignity of God, it was said:
1:512
He says this not because he had been separated from glory, but because he had come to be in an inglorious body, so as to show that the form of a servant is not separated from the divine glory, but rather displays it.
1:513
'And I have glorified it, and will glorify it again,' showing that the glory before the body and the glory in the body are one and the same, as the Apostle says:
1:514
having become as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
1:515
For to which of the angels did he ever say:
1:516
「你坐在我右邊」?道乃創造天使者,斷不是因先前不如天使、如今才變得比他們更超越;
'Sit at my right hand'? By no means did the Logos, the maker of the angels, become superior to them as though he had previously been inferior;
1:517
而是彰顯那在他裡面顯出的僕人形像超乎天使,甚至超乎一切受造之物;
but rather, he showed the form of a servant that arose in him to be superior to the angels, and indeed to all creation;
1:518
since, being the image of the invisible God, he also became the firstborn of all creation, as it is written also in the Gospels:
1:519
'until she brought forth her firstborn Son.'
1:520
How then do you say that the Logos, the creator of rational natures, having mingled flesh with himself, became a rational man? And how, being unchangeable and unalterable, could he have become man without constituting the form of the servant as rational — so that the Logos might remain unchangeable, abiding what he was, and the rational man might be seen on earth as being God? For the Lord is a heavenly man, not by displaying flesh from heaven, but by constituting the flesh that is from earth as heavenly.
1:521
How did they crucify the Lord of glory, and yet, according to you, did not crucify the Logos? Let it not be!
1:522
其實他們是棄絕了道,將道的身體釘在十字架上;
But they rejected the Logos, having nailed the body of the Logos to the cross;
1:523
and the suffering, and the death, and the resurrection belonged to the flesh and soul of God.
1:524
'Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up;'
1:525
wherefore his soul was delivered unto death, and not the Logos himself.
1:526
He laid down his soul for us.
1:527
the Jews had the power to destroy the temple of God, and to sever the indissoluble commixture of the flesh with the Logos that had come to be — if indeed, according to you, the death of the body occurred in this manner.
1:528
For the body would not have died, unless it had been separated from something.
1:529
因為若無拆解,便無死亡;
For if there was no dissolution, neither was there death;
1:530
and if there was no death, neither did resurrection occur.
1:531
For you have said that the Logos, having mingled with himself flesh that had no independent subsistence, thereby showed the truly rational and complete human being.
1:532
If then the Logos departed from the body, and death occurred in this manner, the Jews prevailed against God, having dissolved the indissoluble commixture.
1:533
Neither, then, did our death take place there, if the death of the body occurred through the separation of God.
1:534
And how, having been separated from the incorruptible God, did the body remain in incorruption? Yet the wound will belong to the body, and the suffering to the Logos —
1:535
for this is what they teach as dogma.
1:536
And, according to you, it will also be the Logos who is raised up in the resurrection.
1:537
For it was necessary that someone should have taken from Hades the beginning of the resurrection, so that the resurrection might be complete, and the dissolution of death complete, and the release of the spirits there complete.
1:538
But if the Logos suffered these things, where then is the unchangeableness and unalterableness of the Logos? And how, having appeared unveiled in Hades, was the Logos reckoned to be in death as a man? And how did the Lord say to the Jews:
1:539
'I will raise it up,' and not, 'I rise from Hades'? For if the Logos, having come to be in death, had need of one to raise him from death, the victory will not be his, but that of the one who raises him.
1:540
And how was it foretold beforehand through the prophets concerning his soul? How did the Lord, being present, speak in fulfillment of the promise:
1:541
「我為我的羊捨了我的魂」?聖經清楚教導,這魂乃是靈;
'I lay down my soul for my sheep'? — which soul the holy Scriptures clearly teach to be a spirit;
1:542
the body indeed being killed by men, but the soul not able to be killed by them, inasmuch as it is a spirit.
1:543
耶穌因這靈而心裡憂愁;
By this spirit Jesus was troubled;
1:544
the departure of this spirit from the body took place upon the cross.
1:545
And thus the body died, and its dissolution took place, while God the Logos remained unshiftingly disposed toward the body, and toward the soul, and toward himself — being in the bosom of the Father — in a demonstration of unchangeableness.
1:546
而在那按著我們的樣式、在他裡面形成的形像中,他在那裡描畫出我們的死;
But in the form that came to be in him according to us, he was there depicting our death;
1:547
好叫他也在其中為我們配合成就復活,一面顯出魂從陰間而出,一面顯出身體從墳墓而出;
so that in it he might also fit together the resurrection on our behalf, showing forth the soul from Hades, and the body from the tomb;
1:548
好使他在死亡中、藉魂的顯現,拆毀死亡;又在墳墓中、藉身體的埋葬,廢去朽壞;
that in death he might destroy death through the manifestation of the soul, and in the tomb he might abolish corruption through the burial of the body;
1:549
showing forth from Hades and from the tomb immortality and incorruption, having journeyed our own road in the form according to us, and having dissolved the hold that had come upon us.
1:550
And this was the marvel:
1:551
你們卻只承認肉身,既不能證明罪的定罪,也不能證明死亡的毀滅,更不能證明復活的完全,亦不能證明道的不變性;
But you, confessing flesh alone, are able to demonstrate neither the condemnation of sin, nor the destruction of death, nor the completeness of the resurrection, nor the unchangeableness of the Logos;
1:552
since you have stepped outside the holy Scriptures, speaking what the Arians devise, though the teaching concerning the soul is manifest in the holy Scriptures, and the economy has been fulfilled in the demonstration of every fullness and completeness.
1:553
然而,異端之中,有人承認那可見者,卻不信他的神性;也有人承認他是神,卻否認他肉身的誕生;
But among the heretics, some, confessing him who was seen, disbelieve his divinity; others, confessing him as God, deny the birth of his flesh;
1:554
還有人承認肉身,卻否認他魂的顯現;
and others, confessing the flesh, deny the manifestation of his soul;
1:555
raising up further perplexities, they seek to catch out the sound in faith, while themselves being destitute of the faith.
1:556
Likewise, they too have learned to say:
1:557
「從馬利亞所生的是誰?是神,還是人?」那麼,若有人回答「是人」,他便是不信他的神性,與那些不信此事的異端一致;
'What is he who was born of Mary? God, or man?' Then if one says, 'Man,' he will disbelieve his divinity, becoming of one accord with the heretics who disbelieve in this;
1:558
but if he says, 'God,' he will deny the birth of his flesh, and will be joined together with the heretics who deny this.
1:559
「受苦的是誰?被釘十字架的是誰?是神,還是人?」如此,若他回答「是神」,他便說出了褻瀆的話,如同那不虔敬的亞流黨徒一般;
'Who is it that suffered? Who is it that was crucified? God, or man?' — so that if he says, 'God,' he will put forth a blasphemous word, after the manner of the impious Arians;
1:560
but if he says, 'Man,' he will again speak according to a Jewish supposition.
1:561
so that neither God be disbelieved, nor the birth of the flesh be denied
1:562
But where the name 'flesh' is, there is the harmony of the whole constitution, without sin
1:563
他們把受苦歸於「人」之名,並不逾越此限,正如聖經所記;
And they fix the suffering upon the name 'man', and do not go beyond this, as it is written in the holy Scriptures;
1:564
而論到道的神性,他們承認其不變性與不可言喻性;
but concerning the deity of the Logos they confess the immutability and the ineffability;
1:565
因此,道被以神學而論,人則被以家譜而述,使得就此二者而言,祂本質上且真實地都是同一位;
For this reason the Logos is spoken of theologically, while the man is traced by genealogy, so that with respect to each he may be the very same one, naturally and truly;
1:566
就神性之永恆與受造界之創造而言,祂是神;
God indeed with respect to the eternity of the deity and the creation of the world;
1:567
but man with respect to the birth from a woman, and the growth in age
1:568
祂是神,就賜生命的恩惠而言,且大能行神蹟;
And God indeed with respect to life-giving benefactions, and mighty in wonder-working;
1:569
but man with respect to the like-natured compassions, and the weaknesses like yours
1:570
道是神,顯明於不死、不朽壞、與不變之中;
And the Logos is God in the display of immortality, and incorruption, and immutability;
1:571
but man in the nailing of the cross, and the shedding of blood, and the burial of the body, and the descent into Hades, and the resurrection from the dead
1:572
Thus Christ has been raised from the dead, and being God he raises the dead
1:573
Vain, therefore, are those who ascribe suffering to his deity, or disbelieve his becoming human, or call the one Christ two, or attempt to make a measurement of his flesh, and dare to say how much, or how, contrary to the Scriptures
1:574
因為異端者的心思正是因這樣的臆測而滑跌;
For by such conjectures the understanding of the heretics has stumbled;
1:575
馬吉安因褻瀆過度而偏離正道;
Marcion indeed having turned aside through excess of blasphemy;
1:576
摩尼則因對罪的臆測而轉離正道;
and Mani having been led astray through a notion of sin;
1:577
瓦倫提努斯則因假借「知識」之名而被引入迷途;
and Valentinus having been deceived through a pretext of knowledge;
1:578
撒摩撒他的保羅,以及所謂的弗提努斯,和跟隨他們的人,因不信神性而墮落;
and Paul of Samosata, and the one called Photinus, and those associated with them, having fallen away through unbelief in the deity;
1:579
and Arius having blasphemed through madness
1:580
And you also, using similar contentious rivalries, speak the things that are not written, turning aside the unstable
1:581
然而信那已記載且已成就的事就足夠了,正如保羅所說;
But it is enough to believe the things that are written and that have taken place, as Paul says;
1:582
在凡事上與我們相似,只是沒有罪;
In every respect like us, yet without sin;
1:583
Since Christ, then, suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, and do not, by extending yourselves further, set aside the truth
